Wow. This #augustwrapup is completely ridiculous. I had several enabling factors this month, chief among them a lot of time spent reading in the car or in waiting rooms and also MY KIDS WERE WITH THEIR GRANDPARENTS for most of the month. I knew I’d gotten a lot of reading done this month, but had no idea how much until I stacked it all up. . If I talked about all of these books here I would be here all day, but some highlights: STAND ON THE SKY was a read-aloud for my kids. Supposedly for my oldest, but my youngest liked it so much he made sure to always be around for both his story and his brother’s. Started it much earlier in the summer and finished it last night. An inspiring and well-told MG story that isn’t ownvoices, but is very well researched. 🦅 10 of these books were for #witmonth! Some of these I’d been intending to read for so long. It was fun to have the theme month where so many people were talking about these books and to be able to participate in the conversation. 📚 Three books of poetry, which is a good start to my intention to read poetry more regularly. I liked all of them but probably National Monuments the most. At least, it was the one that had me frantically taking the most notes and reading selections to my husband. ❤️ I predict there is no way that I will be able to tag all of these titles and authors without running afoul of Instagram’s tricky secret tag max, so I will only tag authors. See any books you are curious about in this stack? I would be happy to talk about them more! . . #anneserre #sayakamurata #miekokawakami #emilytesh #irmgardkeun #madeleinebourdouxhe #claricelispector #colette #qiumiaojin #svetlanalexievich #maryroach #erinbow #kimhyesoon #heideerdrich #danezsmith #elissawashuta #bookstack #booknerd https://www.instagram.com/p/B14E7figVuH/?igshid=9pl8y4ejf8q5

Smell(Poem) Day Twenty One By Kim Hyesoon. Grasshoppers, dragonflies, mosquitoes, and beetles hide The sky slipslips away high up The hills roll down to the bottom The frogs leap into the grave The phone rings You receive the pitch-black darkness before the call From the receiver the sound of darkness weeping the sound of wind escaping the trembling voice of torrential rain Night pours out from the showerhead As you reach out your hand to the plunging night the dead birds’ dark blood The unbearable reign of smell, except in death The unbearable disease of landscape, except in death Someone dead sits at the desk and crinkles paper A cold winter night for the people of the North Pole They gnaw on birds that have been buried in the ground wrapped in bearskin the red birds that smell like their own heads. Translated by Don Mee Choi. #KimHyesoon. #Poetry. #Poem. #SouthKoreanPoet. #SouthKoreanPoetry. #KoreanPoetry. #Literature. (at Samastipur) https://www.instagram.com/p/By0iNdSBN6A/?igshid=limsbi1rwpl0

Going back to my original love: poetry. This book’s pretty intense and I only understand it about 40% of the time. Nonetheless, I’m still enjoying the written word! #book #poetry #kimhyesoon #sorrowtootpastemirrorcream #tattoos #socks #bookstagram #bookish #booklove #bookcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/BvpP-O1nzEa/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1uc3dhmx1nwih

‘Parasol, 1885~1890년경’. 나무 위에 올라가는 원숭이를 조각한 목재 손잡이가 재기 있다. 당시의 우양산 손잡이는 작은 조각품을 보는 듯한 경우가 많다. 레이스 브라 톱과 코르셋은 란제리 한(Lingerie Han), 모 저고리와 트색 단속곳은 김혜순 한복(Kimhyesoon Hanbok).

“I’m OK, I’m Pig!”
So, this was definitely one of the stranger works of poetry that I’ve read. This poem “I’m OK, I’m Pig” written by Korean Kim Hyesoon, was definitely an interesting one.
The grotesque has never been my favorite, but I definitely appreciate an intelligent female writer going against the grain and creating a piece that may not be accepted in her society. Hyesoon did exactly this and created something new that expressed her sentiments by going against the binary.
This was a fascinating piece and perhaps I’ll read more by works by her in her book of poems Sorrowtoothpaste and Mirrorcream.

Meeting Kim Hyesoon 김혜순 As mentioned in previous post, we had to attend one of the events associated with the London Book Fair, and so I researched joyfully in anticipation of new experiences and hopefully gaining more understanding of the Korean literature in that case.

One of my readathon books I didn’t dedicate an entire post to, partly because this book required some processing. This was one of my vacation purchases at Prairie Lights Books, and the only one I was explicitly looking for. I’d seen this book recommended on twitter, and as I’m learning Korean right now, I thought I should read more Korean writers! (I am still a VERY long way from being able to read them in Korean.) . Anyway, this was my first introduction to Hyesoon, and it was a good one. As it is all about death, it was interesting reading this so aoon after Stiff, especially with lines like: . Do you want to be a friendly corpse? Do you want to be a scary corpse? . These poems range all over from angry to sad to clinical, touch on the body’s relation to mind and soul, a body’s relation to other bodies, the ways life and death give each other meaning. The last poem, which is separate from the death cycle, I think would be very relevant to those with chronic illnesses or who have spent time hospitalized. . I am sure there were cultural things that I missed in this work, but much was accessible without it, and there was a translator’s note at the end that was very interesting and helpful. I wish more translated books included similar notes. . A great rec for #witmonth, a great read for my poetry goals. Oh! And the illustrations are also fantastic! I would love to know if you’ve read this or if it is on your TBR! . . #womenintranslation #womenintranslationmonth #poetry #autobiographyofdeath #kimhyesoon #translatedpoetry #fijaelee #donmeechoi #newdirectionspaperback https://www.instagram.com/p/B06XdprgbHc/?igshid=1r37r8m8am9yl

So we’re on vacation, walking down the street in Iowa City looking for a place to eat dinner when I think pass a store and think WAIT! PRAIRIE LIGHTS, I’VE HEARD OF THAT PLACE! So over dinner I’m like, “Listen, I am going to that bookstore.” And as soon as we were done eating I took my oldest kid and we scooted over. . . I was in love as soon as I walked in. I browsed around, picking up lots of books and putting them down again, until I saw their amazing poetry section and settled in to comb through it. I picked up the Erdrich because I’ve loved another collection of hers, the Roripaugh because the subject matter sounded amazing, and the Hyesoon because she’s been on my radar since reading an amazing twitter thread on international writers earlier this month. Then Ms. Ice Sandwich just caught my eye as I was browsing — I love the cover design on this series. . . Photographed on a hotel bed because I am still on vacation for a few more days, but was too impatient to wait to do a whole vacation book haul when I get home. . . I think my poetry buying slump is over. . . #bookhaul #prairielights #prairielightsbookstore #msicesandwich #miekokawakami #louisehealkawai #tsunamivsthefukushima50 #leeannroripaugh #heideerdrich #nationalmonuments #autobiographyofdeath #kimhyesoon #donmeechoi #newdirectionsbooks #michiganstateuniversitypress #milkweededitions #pushkinpress https://www.instagram.com/p/B0mnPlMgpWg/?igshid=nqoi6yjb5jpx

Readathon wrap-up! So partway through the readathon I decided to go ahead and commit and make it a #witmonth readathon and read only women in translation. So here is my final stack, though I only got about 80% of the way through Voices from Chernobyl — I will probably finish it tomorrow. So... closing survey! 📚 How would you assess your reading overall? I was pretty happy with the amount of reading that I got done, and also with my decision to sleep a normal amount since the Readathon started in the evening for me. 🛌 Did you have a stategy, and if so, did you stick to it? Sort of? I had some loose ideas of what I would read and when, but mostly let myself grab whatever was calling me whenever I finished something. 📚 What was your favorite snack? Mango habanero cheese curds with crackers! 🧀 Wanna volunteer for our next event? Maybe? 🤷♀️ #deweyaug #reversereadathon #readathonwrapup #womenintranslation #msicesandwich #miekokawakami #louisehealkawai #aftermidnight #irmgardkeun #antheabell #thepureandtheimpure #colette #hermabriffault #neartothewildheart #claricelispector #alisonentrekin #voicesfromchernobyl #svetlanaalexievich #keithgessen #autobiographyofdeath #kimhyesoon #donmeechoi https://www.instagram.com/p/B0uMTomAcOD/?igshid=sd33sx1rxa5t

So, since I’m starting Dewey’s Reverse Readathon tonight, I figured I might as well make my #AugustTBR my #readathonTBR as well. This pile is heavily influenced by both my intention to read more poetry, and August being #witmonth — so there are a lot of women in translation in this pile. Plus a few other random things that called to me as I was gathering. Typically I am too impatient to read poetry during a readathon, but with the kids away, there will be less distraction, so I’ll try one and see how it goes. . . Have you read any of these? Which should I make sure to pick out during the readathon? . . #deweyaug #reversereadathon #tbrstack #ladymurasaki #zahiarahmani #roxanegay #fscottfitzgerald #miekokawakami #irmgardkeun #colette #claricelispector #qiumiaojin #svetlanaalexievich #maryoliver #louiseglück #leeannroripaugh #sarenaulibarri #kimhyesoon #heideerdrich #danezsmith #elissawashuta https://www.instagram.com/p/B0rBtOlgDwj/?igshid=1w9l9nqcq78wp
