The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. He first understudied in 1999, when JOJ was the principal, which may explain the similarity. About half of the Chain Gang song missing and filming starts in earnest during Valjean on parole. Other parts missed because of ushers include several random one-second cover-ups, part of the wedding and about half of Finale. Heads in the way sometimes block the action on the lower right of the stage, but they are shot around well. Vantage point provides some interesting views such as of Fantine during Lovely Ladies. Wonderful performances from the entire cast but especially then soon-to-be-Elphaba Kerry Ellis. Hey, so, I saw your salty Once answers, especially the one about Killian and his hand for his date with Emma, and it says youre a Disabilities studies major? I'm trying to build a specialization for my masters in disability studies in comic books and movies and I was wondering if you can think of any foundational texts about disabilities studies, especially about portrayals in media? There's no one at my uni that I've found with the knowledge and the library has been less than helpful, as well.

Yes! Okay, you have no idea how much this question made my day. I should preface this by saying that my focus with disability studies is disability representation in literature, particularly poetry, so I haven’t done much reading into its presence in comic books—although, there is plenty to work with there within the X-Men alone. 

Some general disability texts that I’ve drawn on in my own research:

The Disability Studies Reader, 5th edition, 2016 (ed. Lennard J. Davis)DSR is basically the Disability Studies bible. It’s on its 5th edition now and I suspect Davis will release another one in the next several years (after he finishes padding his ego with his current project, probably). Anyway, this one is a big collection of essays that span the discipline. The newest edition will always be the one you want because it’s going to have the most up-to-date essays which is pertinent for someone studying media representation.

Beginning With Disability: A Primer, 2018 (ed. Lennard J. Davis)This is very similar to the one above, the only major differences are that this one is newer—it has a few articles on disability in hollywood that you would find particularly helpful (“The Ethics of Hodor” by Kornhaber and Mayer, “The New Kid in Primetime” by Luft, “Your Body Isn’t Your World” by Moosa, and a real stunner called “If Hollywood’s So Creative, Why Can’t It Tell New Stories About People With Disabilities” by Rosenberg)—and it’s significantly smaller. 

Keywords for Disability Studies, 2015 (eds. Adams, Reiss, and Serlin)This is essentially a glossary—it defines major academic terms as they relate to disability studies. It’s a good touchstone and features a lot of heavy hitters in the field, so if nothing else, you can use it as a bibliography of other potential sources. 

Some monographs that are more media/culture oriented:

Extraordinary Bodies, 1997 (by Rosemarie Garland Thompson)This is an older text, and is often considered to be one of the foundational texts of the discipline. Thompson’s work kind of opens the door for the entire field of study. Though she focuses on literature, there are some important concepts that would relate well to media representation.

Disability Aesthetics, 2010 (by Tobin Siebers)I drew heavily on this text for my own research because I’m far more concerned with aesthetics in poetry than you probably are. This is still an important text, though, because it creates the groundwork for a disability aesthetic which will be present in any work that has disability or characters with disability. 

Some authors/essayists/scholars that are worth looking into:

Michael BérubéMichael is actually my thesis supervisor’s husband. I haven’t worked with him directly, but I’ve spoken with him on occasion. His current work is pretty much exactly what you’re working on—in our last conversation he said his current project is to do with disability in comic books and the MCU and DCU. I’m not sure if he’s published on it yet, but I suspect he will in the near future. 

Janet LyonI think Janet might string me up by my toenails if I mentioned her husband and neglected to mention her. Janet, if you couldn’t guess, is my thesis supervisor. She deals primarily with disability in Modern Irish poetry—however, she is incredibly knowledgeable in almost every aspect of disability studies. She’s the faculty-in-charge of my university’s DS program.

Alison KaferAuthor of Feminist Queer Crip. Her book gets a little wordy and overly academic at times, and unfortunately to the detriment of its clarity, but it’s an important perspective especially when thinking about disability representation in society today.

Margaret PricePrice is a wonderful woman, I was lucky to meet her at a conference last year. Her work is based on the practical realities of disabilities especially in academia today. 

G. Thomas CouserI’m most familiar with Couser’s work on disability life writing, although he’s authored a number of texts that are good general touchstones for the discipline overall.

Heard people are making Marauders OCs so I realized I never really introduced one of my gals. I’ve just been clowning with @cursebreakerfarrier for a while with her.

So here is Elowen Abberline! She’s a bit older than true ME as she’s born around 1956 and not 1960. Her father Alphonse Abberline was the head of the Aurors and was very famous for being successful at his job and being warm and friendly. It was just the two of them and they were inseparable, Al even taking her to the Ministry some days. Elowen had the run of the place and charmed the entire department. The two of them lived together in a little cottage in the woods in the countryside (location tbd).

Unfortunately, Alphonse was killed by a Death Eater sometime when El was a teenager. She lost her best friend and was driven to find whoever killed him. She decided to go to the best Muggle university she could find and take classes in law and journalism. After getting her degree, she tried to enter the workforce but had to start at the bottom. This, of course, was working as a journalist for the Daily Prophet.

She had the knowledge to work as a lawyer which served her well. Eventually she would also have a private investigator business on the side. One day, a story she was reporting on was also being investigated by Aurors and she demanded the ability to shadow the Auror on the case. She was granted this as she knew almost everyone in the department. Everyone, that is, except the newest Auror who was hired after the death of her father. Killian Reiss was now her partner and the two butted heads at the start but would eventually grow together and even fall in love.

Together they would try to solve the murder of Alphonse Abberline…
