I LOVE KILLER INSTINCT SO MUCH RRAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I just started playing like 2 weeks ago but I already think this might be one of my favorite games ever, would highly recommend if you enjoy fighting games, or just fast-paced games in general. I was introduced through watching Maximillian Dood play it on YouTube and it caught my interest, AND THEN I learned that Mick Gordon composed the music and I was SOLD
There's plenty of single player content if online play isn't your thing (LIKE ME). Oh yeah, and I almost forgor, ITS FREE ON STEAM. There's also the anniversary edition that's like 30 bucks, but it you're not sure you'll enjoy it, you don't even have to spend a penny to try it out. The free version only has 2 characters that are unlockable (one of the being Jago here), but there's also a free character that rotates out weekly, so you can still experience every character if you wait long enough.
I wish Microsoft actually gave a shit about the IP, but instead of making good games they would rather renew the Halo TV show for a third season, god forbid. BRING BACK KI YOU COWARDS

I really dont like the modern fighting game model of being asked to pay full price for a minimal roster of the same obligatory characters and then paying extra for the characters you actually want a few years into the game's life cycle.

This part of the KI anniversary update patch notes really stood out to me, where they say that generalist characters like Jago struggle to keep up with the rest of the roster as the meta develops. It makes me wonder, how do you fix this problem without redefining the character?

Reading Wolverine comics after watching the movies has me absolutely falling in love with the "man or animal" motif that follows Logan literally everywhere.
Tumblr media
// Marvel Comics Presents (1991): Issue #75
My favourite read so far is the short 4 issue series, Wolverine (1982), which the 2013 Wolverine movie is based on. Bascially it being about Logan trying not to lose Mariko to an arranged marriage and the cultural powers at play to which he isn't privy to. Furthermore, it absolutely dense with character-centered narrative with Logan's inner conflict surrounding the balancing act he must preform between embracing his animalistic side and his desire to be more than the killer he's always been, whilst he struggles with fitting into japanese society and the japanese underground. I could not reccomend it enough. Issue #3 is such a standout for me, all the excerpts provided are from it also.
One of the scenes i think highlight what im getting at with the motif is how Logan actively interprets an event that took place previously in the story. Earlier, he had fought Shingen (Mariko's father) to defend his own honor and for him to overrule Mariko's marriage so they may be together again, ultimately he not only loses but he humiliates and dishonors himself in the process. In this scene, he has a dream about the battle in a sequence that showcases what that humiliation actually meant for him in relation to his internal fight to let go of the animal he thinks himself of.
Tumblr media
Despite how undisputable his physical strength is, the defeat he endures against Shingen crushes him and defines his motivations for the entire series. The words Mariko says in his dream, bascially defining him as a fraud and unworthy of her love, and the panel that follows this one saying he is also unworthy of life, is pretty indicative of his fear that his primal instincts- what he defines himself as -negates his noble aspirations to be a better man, overshadowing his morality.
It's also interestingly delved into with how his relationship with Mariko and his following romance with Yukio is contrasted in how they have an effect on Wolverine's internal conflict: Mariko's influence makes him want to strive for self-improvement, to appease her, while Yukio is able to accept who he is
Tumblr media
Mariko's influence makes him want to strive for self-improvement, to appease her, while Yukio is able to accept who he is and his nature. The growth and control vs embracing your supposed truth serves as a new perspective to view Logan from. Basically, it's a reflection of how Logan himself is struggling to not only balance both aspects of himself, but also his struggle to accept them in the first place.
Going back to the films, I think they do a good job of adapting this method of symbolizing his self-reflection. For instance, in the origins movie, one of the conflicts I love from it is how this exact concept is adapted to Kayla and Victor. Kayla, being the stand-in for Mariko, motivates Logan to move past his animalistic side, literally telling him "you're not an animal, logan", whilst Victor is the force that wants him to ditch assimilation and embrace his mutations completely, though in this case it's much more violent and psychotic than Yukio's approach in the comic. The film version is a whole new exploration of his characterin its own right since it's more like these two opposing ideas are telling him what he should be, and the consequent struggle between what he should choose.
Though, and this is just my interpretation, what I appreciate most of this theme is that it managed to be so confusing for Logan that it circles back to being ironic. Because yes, he failed Mariko and he failed Yukio, he failed to assimilate to societal standards and he failed to be true to himself- whatever that really is -but I think one of his biggest failings is concluding for so long that he is an animal and therefore not a man, when in reality he has shown nothing but human desires, ambitions to change, to choose. He is an animal, it's just that that animal is a man.

Just finished the first ep of that Lara Croft show and ho boy. If you're not into the games or you're not into the Survivor trilogy specifically then you're probably not going to like it. If you haven't played them, it makes a lot of reference but it explains enough that you should be fine.
A lot of people had problem with the way she is? But like- that's the farthest thing from my mind, she looks and sounds stunning in this.
It attempts to bridge the gap between Survivor and the other games which is...bold. I just never felt like Lara's beginnings needed to be searched beyond the original games, sure the later ones that attempted to continue it tanked but I just think of her as an Indiana Jones/James Bond. To see the first adventure made grandiose for either of them, it's just kind of weird aside from the novelty, this is where I had a problem with the more recent games. And I think it's holding this back.
At the beginning, they show Lara in Chile fighting an alligator (croc?) which uh *clears throat*
Tumblr media
That can be looked past but they make a big deal that she just beat an alligator but...she just knifes it underwater. It's meant to be suspenseful because it pulls her down and you see her get back up, walk away and the alligator starts floating which in its own right sounds cool but the delivery could've been handled better, no words needed, no heavy breathing but instead she coughs it up being- ah schnit, this again?
She had killer instinct in Shadow, but apparently this was pre-2013 because Roth was there. He brings it up about how cool that is but like- it was offscreen...
If I was handling it, I'd have her climb out of that water with it over her shoulders like she's Tarzan or something. No gore needed. There's just so much potential for something like this. And later on she has a car chase where she transitions to a bike and I just have to say. BMX Lara game when? That was fire, exactly the type of thing I was talking about and I wanted and I was down to continue it, thinking that the beginning was just their way of trying to show that she was a bit weaker back then. But then the ending-
It told me that this is going to be your run of the mill end of the world, some artifact possesses the bad guy kind of story. The artifact takes hold and he enacts the power to tell one of the guys on his boat to shoot the captain...like- he's driving the boat? Why would you do that? Isn't he working for your goal already? What is the point? Just dumb nonsense. Whether I continue it or not, I don't know, I just don't expect anything too out of the ordinary. A good adaptation at the very least.

Ok so tango shut down and it’s sad and all but Bethesda probably still owns the hi fi rush ip so that would probably mean that a sequel could still happen from another studio if they were given consulting from one of the first game’s project leads. Maybe iron galaxy since they had experience from taking over killer instinct 2013’s post launch content
Tumblr media
I just don’t want Bethesda/microsoft to throw the ip in the ip abandonment bin in order to put out more forza games or something ok 😭

Shin Sekai Yori and the Fear of the Unknown
Shin Sekai Yori by A-1 Pictures (2012 – 2013) was the latest feature in my anime exploration. The visuals of the show were excellent, especially the way that the animators played with light. Scenes set at dusk with dynamic skies and silhouetted features captured the look, but more importantly the feel of twilight. Scenes at night and in caves captured the way that space closes in on you when light wanes adding drama and suspense to the story.
Tumblr media
Shin Sekai Yori is more than just pretty pictures. The series comments insightfully on deep issues including class dynamics, power and what it means to be human. Another prominent theme addressed in the series is fear – specifically fear of the unknown. There are some dangers that are easy to understand. Tigers are deadly, driving above the speed limit increases risk and certain places at certain times have higher risk for crime. However, when violence erupts in places, times and at the hands of those we don’t expect primal fears activate as society tires to understand why something so horrible could happen.
The anxieties surrounding unexplainable violence in real life Japan are mirrored in Shin Sekai Yori. Episode 4 reveals that the start of the disruption in social order after people were discovering to use their cantus was sparked by “Boy A”, a young child who went on a killing spree, breaking into homes and committing brutal crimes. This a reference to the crimes committed by Shōnen A, a young murderer in actual Japan in the late 1990’s (Arai, 2000). Both events shook society and in the universe of Shin Sekai Yori strong action was taken eventually culminating genetically modifying humanity to have an automatic physical response that prevents them from harming others.
Possibly more terrifying than unexpected violence is when the actions that we take to control the situation are not completely effective. In Shin Sekai Yori, some children, known as Fiends, are immune to their genetically imposed killing instincts. SSY’s main character Saki learns the truth about Fiends when she is told the story of a young boy who is obsessed with dark ideas. One day the boy goes on a massacre. His lack of restraint coupled with the rest of societies physical limitation from harming him is a worst case scenario of an out of control threat. Eventually the killer is defeated, but even stronger measures are taken to attempt to eliminate the chances that someone will develop into a Fiend. Anyone even remotely displaying troublesome traits will be eliminated. It mostly works, but the show struggles with the idea of the cost of these measures. How many innocent lives are lost in the pursuit of public safety? What is the acceptable margin of error when trying to prevent a catastrophe?
Tumblr media
This dilhemma exists in the real world too. One example is how artificial intelligence and machine vision are already being used to identify possible school shooters. Max Zahn’s ABC News article Can Artificial Intelligence Help Stop Mass Shootings? discusses the use and reaction to these types of systems. Fortunately a key difference exists between these systems and the pre-emptive action taken by society in SSY. The systems being used today only flag actions as a response to an attack already happening. The article mentions that some are concerned about innocent people being flagged as threats. Someone’s life being tainted by a false identification is a valid concern. However, the problem isn’t that the data is being collected or analyzed in an automated way, it’s society’s reaction to the data that is collected. Instead of using the surveillance data to punish, it should be used to intervene and help people before the turn to violence. The solution isn’t punishing an individual, it’s creating systemic fixes.
