Check out this photo from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Earlier this week, blue burning flames of methane gas were observed in the cracks on Kahukai Street, in the Leilani Estates subdivision. When hot lava buries plants and shrubs, methane gas is produced as a byproduct of burning vegetation. Methane gas can seep into subsurface voids and explode when heated, or as shown in this video, emerge from cracks in the ground several feet away from the lava. When ignited, the methane produces a blue flame. Short, intermittent bursts of methane are visible in the center area of the photo. Lava fountaining is also visible.

¿El Volcán Kilauea está apunto de EXPLOTAR? ALGO SE OCULTA BAJO TIERRA
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Hawaii's Kīlauea volcano, one of the most active on Earth, has begun erupting again, with lava fountains forming and smoke billowing from the crater at the volcano's summit. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed Wednesday the eruption began and raised the volcano alert level to “warning” and the aviation code to red. The eruption at the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, however, appeared to be be contained within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and posed no threat to homes in the area for now, USGS officials said. Photos and video from the crater showed lava fountains forming and volcanic gases escaping. The first photo shows the continuing eruption of the volcano. The Kīlauea volcano has a long history of eruptions as the most active volcano on Hawaii, but it's also the islands' youngest, according to the National Park Service. 📷: U.S. Geological Survey via @apnews, @gettyimages #Hawaiivolcano #KilaueaEruption #volcanoes #Hawaii

The oceans are largely unaffected by the current eruption in Hawaii, but gases that are being released, like carbon dioxide, will affect global climate over millions of years, says @somas.sbu professor David Black. #KilaueaEruption #KilaueaVolcano #StonyBrookU #research https://ift.tt/2J7mH3W

Hawaii’s volcanic eruption has destroyed at least 26 homes, officials say

Lava and gas spurt from volcanic vents in Hawaii
Aerial footage of volcanic vents in a residential neighborhood.
Lava erupting from Hawaii's powerful Kilauea volcano has now destroyed at least 26 homes, more than double the previous figure, officials announced Sunday, citing grim findings from an aerial survey by the fire department.
Scientists reported lava spewing more than 200 feet into the air. More than 1,700 people have evacuated, and some said they may have to stay away from their homes for a long time. There was no initial word of anybody injured.
Earlier in the day, officials had said the lava destroyed nine homes.
Big Island civil defense officials also said Sunday that two new fissures, or vents where lava has broken through the ground, have emerged in the Leilani Estates subdivision.
"There's more magma in the system to be erupted. As long as that supply is there, the eruption will continue," U.S. Geological Survey volcanologist Wendy Stovall said.
As many as 10 fissures have opened up since the eruption started late Thursday afternoon, scientists said, adding that one of those vents has gone dormant.
Among the people whose homes were destroyed: an elementary school teacher and single mother of two. The woman, Amber Makuakane, told The Associated Press her three-bedroom house was right across from a fissure that had opened Friday. She says there was some steam rising from all parts of the yard initially but everything looked fine.

She also said she knew the volcano's risks, but wanted to stay close to her family. Her children's ages are 6 and 4.
A fellow teacher started a fundraising page to help Makuakane and her family rebuild.
Some people who evacuated will be allowed to return to pick up pets, medicine and vital documents, officials said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

On May 20, 2018, at 6:45 a.m. HST, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was able to get a view of the lava ocean entry point from a helicopter overflight. See the white "laze" plume form as hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air. Laze is a health hazard, especially for those in the immediate vicinity of the plume.

High Alert: Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Turns Mordor With Lava Speed Exceeding 17 Miles Per Hour High Alert: Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Turns Mordor With Lava Speed Exceeding 17 Miles Per Hour Mount Kilauea started erupting almost three weeks ago, and has forced over 1,700 people to evacuate. The volcano’s main crater, Puʻu ʻŌʻō, has been spewing smoke and potentially noxious gases downwind during that time, and some 16 fissures—like burst pipes of lava running underneath the ground—are now oozing lava. This lava has destroyed dozens of homes, and in one case is dangerously encroaching on a local power plant. In addition to the lava, these fissures have caused another, more bizarre, form of destruction: ridges of blue flames burning on the streets. On May 23 (Wednesday), the US Geological Survey’s Volcano Hazards Program posted a video on Facebook of one of these fissures taken around 11:30pm local time the night before from a subdivision. “When hot lava buries plants and shrubs, methane gas is produced as a byproduct,” the post explains. “Methane gas can seep into subsurface voids.” When the gas in these below-ground pockets reach a certain pressure, it’ll burst through the top, says Wendy Stovall, a vulcanologist at the USGS Volcano Hazards Program, or as we can see in the images posted to Facebook, emerge from cracks in the ground several feet away. Methane burns blue. You likely used methane to create a blue flame on a Bunsen burner in your high school chemistry class. Some gas stoves also use natural gas, although many (and most outdoor grills) use propane, another combustible fuel. Methane in its pure form is four hydrogens atoms attached to one atom of carbon. The natural gas we use at home is primarily made of methane, though it contains trace amounts of other gases, like ethane, propane, butane, and times carbon dioxide. For the most part, though, what comes out of your stove is this five-atom molecule. In the presence of enough oxygen, methane molecules become excited—the technical term for when electrons get enough energy to move away from their ground states—and give off a glowing blue color, as well as water vapor and carbon dioxide formed from reacting with the oxygen. In certain cases, the methane can give off heat as high as 1,960°C (3,560°F), Scientists aren’t sure when Kilauea’s eruption will stop, but it’s important to remember that these effects are highly localized. “It’s really this very small area in this south eastern edge of the island and the summit [of Kilauea] that are experiencing these issues,” Stovall said in a press conference.
