Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with Justin Clark of RomperJack, a brand that sells men's rompers and jumpsuits. Some stats:Product: Men's rompers and jumpsuits.Revenue/mo: $60,000Started: July 2017Location: Los AngelesFounders: 3Employees: 1Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?Hello, my name is Justin Clark, I’m 31 and I am the founder of RomperJack. RomperJack is a men’s apparel company that specifically sells men's rompers and jumpsuits. Our rompers are made from premium materials and designed to be perfectly fitted.RomperJack is a premium men’s brand that is predominately preferred by the LGBTQ community. Our customers tend to be bold, confident and unique. Our customers enjoy our floral patterns, tight fit, and whacky styling.Men's rompers are very unique and have not even been around for 2 years yet.For those who are unfamiliar with a mens romper; it’s a button up shirt sewn into shorts and a jumpsuit is a button up shirt sewn into pants, like a fashionable onesie. Check out the pictures below….imageRomper/Jumpsuit….What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?Actually, it’s kind of a cool backstory...In late 2015, I was just about to go to Medical School and shortly before, I came up with an app idea called Whiz Tutor. Whiz Tutor is similar to Uber however, is designed to help parents and students find local, on-demand tutors in their area.Long story short, I raised capital, launched the platform, went through an accelerator program, raised more capital, and began to scale. I ended up choosing to remain in the entrepreneur world and haven’t looked back. This early startup ultimately gave me the skills and provided me with the team that would later open the door to RomperJack. Whiz Tutor to this date is still our main focus and is continuing to prosper and grow everyday. As Whiz Tutor was growing and becoming more and more popular, we never really thought about how slow it would be during the summertime as an Ed-tech startup. Well, let’s just say you can hear crickets in our office during summertime because Tutoring is not cool and hip especially when school is on break. Summer time is Whiz Tutor’s slow period so this gives us time to play around with other possible business opportunities. In May 2017 just after finals ended (Just after our busiest time for whiz tutor), I came across a Kickstarter campaign called Romphim; it was a couple of guys trying to launch the men's romper. They essentially wanted to raise $10,000 to get their project going, but by day 3 they already raised $330,000! I was blown away!! The first thing that popped in my head was product-market fit. They had this instant explosive traction and they didn’t have a single competitor. So I gave them a competitor, MEEEE 😎. I remember that day calling a couple of friends and quickly asking them for some funding that would be used to help design the rompers and buy inventory. After about a minute of me pitching them, they all happily agreed. Also, My other Whiz Tutor Co-founders all agreed to help as well. That was the day the idea was born.imageTake us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product. When we first saw the romper on Kickstarter, all we had to work with was a picture since no one was actually selling mens rompers at the time.So we took that picture, threw it into Photoshop, changed the color and gave the romper a more tapered and fitted look. We changed the fit and look of the romper because we were targeting the LGBTQ audience. This specific customers tends to like clothing more fitted. Once we were happy with the look that's when I reached out to different manufacturers on Alibaba. Before Romperjack, I did have some experience sourcing products on Alibaba. I’ve sourced many samples for other side projects that never really got going but that experience gave me a pretty good upper-hand.Usually, when you source products, you reach out to multiple manufacturers for samples, but since no one has ever made this product, we had to do this differently. I vividly remember this clothing manufacturer that I stumbled upon who was making women's’ rompers oversees.I decided to email them a picture of the romper and asked if they could make it. A man named Baloo (yes like The Jungle Book) responded to the email and started asking me all sorts of fashion/garment manufacturing questions. I had no idea what he was talking about. I knew absolutely nothing about fashion so I was completely lost. So, I just told him “Baloo I don’t know a single thing about fashion but I need to get a sample made, can you take this picture and pretend you were going to make a men’s romper sample for a 180lb, 6-foot man.”He emailed back and said “My friend, no problem. I make for you!” Two weeks later I had a sample. 😂The first sample we got was really, really bad. The material was really thin, the fit was way off and it felt cheaply made. However, we at least had something to work with. We measured the sample and then went shopping for better materials.imageThe picture above is of my brother wearing the first sample. This was actually the first picture taken of the product.I sent Baloo the material we were looking for and the new measurements. Within two weeks, we got the new samples and they were perfect! Baloo and I discussed MOQ (Minimum order quantity) pricing and once I was satisfied, I made a bulk order for 1 style with 4 different colors. The first order we purchased was for 1200 pieces 4 different styles.Describe the process of launching the business. At the time, none of us had any experience with fashion nor an inventory-related business, so we were like a chicken blindfolded running around when we launched. The first issue we had when creating our website was that we had no available product to take pictures of so we had to use our photoshop mock-ups to create the original site. The second issue was that we had no clear understanding of who our market was. No one had ever tried to sell a male romper before, so we had no idea who to even market to.Even though we had some things against us we did know how to create a business, market/advertise and how to create a well-designed website. For the website, we decided to use Shopify to power our e-commerce store and host our site. Shopify definitely has the best platform for merchants. To file our business LLC and to create a DBA, we used LEGALZOOM.We also filed for a trademark to protect the RomperJack name, to do this we used Trademarkia. To source the product and find credible manufacturers we used Alibaba.Once we finally finished building the site, we needed to run a live test to make sure everything was functioning correctly.. (keep in mind we had no product at this time, I believe the product was not supposed to arrive for about 35 more days). I published the website to test everything and 30 seconds after doing so, someone in San Francisco somehow found our brand new romper site and purchased a romper. NO JOKE!!! 30 seconds after launch, someone bought!!! We all freaked out, we didn’t even have anything to send him, lol. Long story short we had to email the customer to let him know what had happened and we promised him a free romper once we got our stock. The customer that bought the first romper gave us the idea to sell on pre-order because we knew that customers would still purchase pre-orders if no one else was selling rompers yet. So we officially launched the store on July 10, 2017 and on the first day, I remember we did about $1200 in sales. We were so stoked and have only continued to grow since then.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers? Before Romperjack came to life, we were already running 2 online companies making us already extremely familiar with different online marketing tactics. However, we weren’t sure which ones would necessarily work better - which is where testing came in to play. When we first launched Romperjack, we had a huge advantage right off the bat which was having very very strong SEO, like page 1 spot #2 for our keywords. This was simply due to the fact that there were only 2 companies in the world at the time selling mens rompers - Us (Romperjack) and Romphim. Since this day, we have remained in the #2 spot.To build our initial traffic and to find an audience, we tested and utilized a ton of different marketing platforms… Facebook/Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Ad roll (retargeting), Google Ad Words, Bing Ad Words, Reddit Ads, Outbrain, Influencer Marketing etc… Now, not all these platforms worked. In fact, some of them failed miserably.Over the past 2 years, we have simplified our marketing down to 4 keys things: I will break them down:Facebook and Instagram AdsWe use this platform to find new customers and to retarget current interested customers. Facebook ROAS is about 4.2X.In the beginning we casted a very wide net to find our target audience and as we got more and more sales we narrowed that audience down. Now we run lookalike campaigns based off our customer list.We also have a sales funnel setup to capture a customer at multiple stages. We run a ton of retargeting campaigns at different stages to finalize the sale.Google AdWordsWe use this platform for the mid-level funnel. People who find us through Google Ad Words by searching our key words means that they are seriously thinking about buying. We buy keywords like mens romper or male romper so when one puts that into google we pop up.AdRollThis does retargeting that is seen on 1000’s of websites. Retargeting is a way to show ads to customers that visited your site but did not purchase. It’s kind of like subliminal marketing, they see the ad and it reminds them, then later on they come to back to purchase. We have about a 12X ROAS with retargeting. This is super simple to setup, Adroll will even make the ad for you.The last thing we use is email marketing. We build email lists of interested customers by offering them something when they subscribe. These lists build over time and with the right campaign we can get these customers to convert quite well. All in all, Romperjack has about 45k visitors to its website every month. This number continues to grow and grow as more and more customers learn about our products and mission. How are you doing today and what does the future look like?Today, Romperjack is doing great! So far, we have been growing by an average of 60% month to month in 2019 and things are looking great. Here are some notable analyticsMonthly Visitors: >40,0002.4% Conversion Rate15,000 Email Subscribers20,000 Instagram followers24% Return Customer RateWe have some really cool things planned for our future. Since we have now established a brand, we are excited to begin to offer other products other than just rompers. We just recently launched our first pair of mens shorts and have plans to launch mens overalls and nice button-up shirts. We also recently launched a womens overall brand called Romperjill that has already completely sold out.Our goal is to grow Romperjack into a recognizable global brand and to have its success continue to be carried on either by us (the founding team) or by a possible buyer in the future.Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?Over the last 2 years, we have learned so much from Romperjack - our first ecommerce business. The main takeaways from starting this company are that we learned how to define a proper audience, learned a ton about online marketing, how to deal with inventory, how to successfully source products from overseas, and most of all, the importance of establishing a brand rather than just a product. We have also had many hardships over the past 2 years. The 2 in particular: dealing with inventory and available cash to increase growth.Inventory has killed more companies than the plague. If you are familiar with the book The 80/20 Rule, you could clearly apply this rule to your different SKUs and see that there is a very true correlation. We quickly saw this with Romperjack when we made the huge mistake of launching way to many styles and assuming they would sell. Now we see that literally 80% of our sales come from only 20% of our products. So to combat this, we order a very low amount of new designs until they are proven high sellers and order a very large amount of the popular designs.Lack of capital is also startup killer. To grow, you always need capital. We were actually growing faster than we could afford, which in turn, actually slowed our growth in a sense. We still have this problem to date.We are growing anywhere between 60-100% month to month but we can’t afford to order enough product at that rate either because some SKU’s are still unsold or because our funding capital has already been spent the previous month. To combat this we take high credit lines with terrible terms that require quick payback. Unfortunately, this eats into our profit but it avoids us selling equity early on.What platform/tools do you use for your business?Sketch, Photoshop (and other Adobe Suite apps) for designSlack for communicationDropbox & Google Drive for file sharingTaxjar for sales taxKlaviyo for email marketingFacebook for customer chatsYotpo for customer reviewsShopify For e-commerceMarketing Platforms:Instagram/FacebookAdroll - retargetingGoogle Ad wordsReddit AdsWhat have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?BooksThe One ThingHow to win friends and influence peopleThe 80/20 PrincipleFavorite PodcastHow I Built This with Guy RazAdvice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?Always start small and lean. Prove the idea/concept - never just dive straight in. One of the best methods is to follow the Lean Startup method by Steve Blake. Also if you fail do it fast, most of the time you can see a business crashing before it sinks. “You wouldn’t try to repair a sinking ship in rough waters”Last but not least always start or launch something you actually enjoy doing otherwise you will just get bored and the probability of it failing is much higher.Watch for trends and act fast. Are you looking to hire for certain positions right now?No not at the moment, but maybe in the near future. A fun fact: every hire to date, other than the founding team, has been a stay-at-home mom/dad. Usually new parents who were in the workforce and just recently had a child. We feel like hiring stay-at-home dads and moms is a bit of a way for us to give back and to help support new parents.Where can we go to learn more?Romperjack.comEmail: [email protected] you have any questions or comments, drop a comment below!Liked this text interview? How to Use Landing Pages to Test New Business or Product Ideas
When it comes to launching a new product or business, my mantra is to “fall in love with the problem, not the solution.” In other words: even if you think you’ve come up with the next big thing, you should always treat it like a hypothesis. And as with any hypothesis, that means testing it.
If your original concept takes off without a hitch? Great! But if it doesn’t, you should continue testing (and retesting, and retesting) until you find the best solution to your potential customers’ problem. Testing might sound like it requires a large investment of time, money, and other resources, but I’ve found the perfect low-effort, high-return workaround: building a landing page.
Why landing pages?
Using landing pages to test a new product or service idea allows you to collect valuable customer feedback while remaining agile, and can shed light on the overall viability of your proposed solution. But the best part is that landing pages don’t require a large amount of custom design and development work.
By using templates, you can focus on identifying your value proposition and validating your idea before bringing it to market. And there are more than a few ways to do so:
Split test the big stuff early on
Virtually every landing page feature (headlines and body copy, images, colors, etc.) can be A/B tested to optimize performance—and companies should be using that to their advantage.
That said, you shouldn’t split test everything just because you can. Before trying to determine how layout and header images might impact user action, use landing page A/B testing capability to find out what consumers really want. I generally start with the same layout and experiment by talking about the business concept in two different ways.
A/B tests are often described in terms of small changes to layout, but they can be very effective for testing different value props.
For example, if I wanted to launch a new ride-sharing app, I could test the following value propositions to see what speaks to people most:
Convenience: Someone will pick you up and take you where you want to go
Affordability: You no longer need to own a car or take on the associated costs of gas, insurance, parking, etc.
Testing like this allows you to gather more conclusive data about what resonates most with your audience—knowledge you can use to inform the development of your business or product moving forward.
EDITOR’S NOTE. Unbounce landing page templates include A/B Testing so you can quickly and easily compare your page variants—no technical setup required—and figure out the strongest value prop for your new product or business.
Distill copy to your main value proposition (no marketing speak!)
Without a doubt, copy is one of the most important elements on a website—it can make or break the visitor experience. Before you even start designing a landing page, think about what you need to say about your product or business idea.
Once you’ve decided your core value proposition (in the previous step), it’s time to describe it in a way that will resonate with prospective customers. Writing things out in a plain Google Doc (instead of directly into a website template) can really help to flesh this out.
When it comes to writing landing page copy, I recommend that you:
Address the problem, and propose a solution
Use strong, positive headlines
Emphasize benefits over features
Keep it concise; landing pages should be scannable
Include a clear call to action
Successful copywriting is rooted in a solid understanding of who the customer is: how they think, feel, and act; what drives them to make purchasing decisions. The language you use should also reflect that of your target audience.
Let’s look at a before-and-after example for the same business idea mentioned above:
Before: Revolutionary ride-sharing technology
After: We’ll pick you up, wherever you are
The first headline is vague and buzzwordy—it doesn’t tell visitors about the product, or why they should care about it—while the second headline speaks directly to the convenience value proposition in clear and straightforward language.
PRO TIP. If you haven’t had time to develop formal personas, a great way to learn about your customers is to examine how they communicate and interact on social media. Interviewing a few potential users to get a sense of their pain points and preferences can help too.
Incorporate visuals and 3D renders of your future product (if it doesn’t already exist)
If you’re testing a new product or idea, you’ll need to incorporate compelling imagery on your landing page. Strong visual elements help to communicate the value and desirability of your products. The more you can use renders and videos to show people, “hey, here’s what the future state of this product will be,” the better since it gives you a chance to gauge interest before putting something into production.
In addition to showcasing your product with visuals and 3D renders, design your landing page with simplicity and consistency in mind. Leverage the icons and imagery provided with your landing page template to communicate your values visually (above the fold, where possible) and remember to use a similar aesthetic on your social channels to create a cohesive brand experience for customers.
Your landing page aesthetic helps create a cohesive brand experience. (via Galymzhan Abdugalimov on Unsplash)
PRO TIP. I also recommend using stock imagery to complement your landing page’s message. Just remember to use high-quality photos that are relevant to your product or business idea. Some of my favorite resources include Unsplash, Splitshire, Gratisography, and Pexels.
Focus on top-of-funnel KPIs first, then move down the funnel
Knowing which metrics and KPIs to pay attention to during the pre-launch phase is crucial. Generally speaking, you’ll want to focus on top-of-funnel metrics first. I look at click-through rates to get a holistic picture of customer interest and engagement. How many people are getting from the first page to the second page? What percentage of people are clicking on the sign-up button?
At the end of the day, it’s great to get money—transactions are the ultimate KPI—but frankly, that’s the hardest thing to accomplish early on. If you start by measuring click-through rates, you can say, “Cool, 22% of people clicked the sign-up button, which took them to another page.” And now you have the chance to get them to fill in some more details, or direct them to a “Welcome” or “Coming Soon” landing page, and ease that customer down the funnel.
AARRR Pirate Metrics by Dave McClure: Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral and Revenue
Send the right traffic to your landing page
As a benchmark, I try to obtain a 25% conversion rate from a landing page’s first CTA. If you can’t do this, it might be an indication that your product doesn’t adequately solve your customers’ problems—or at least that your value proposition isn’t resonating with them. But remember: there are a lot of things that might affect your conversion rates.
Consider where people are coming to your landing page from. Conversions from paid search are a good sign that people are interested in what you have to offer; you want to capture attention and leads from the people are actively searching for the solution you’re offering. You might also want to think about investing in paid social. I’ve found success with Twitter and Facebook—it’s really about meeting your customers where they are.
Provide value to visitors to increase conversions
To maximize conversions, you need to provide something of significant value to your landing page visitors. For SaaS companies, this can be something as simple as a beta sign-up or free tool download; since there are no physical products involved, SaaS companies have a fair amount of flexibility in their offerings. E-commerce brands, however, need to be a bit more creative.
Kickstarter is one way new companies are gauging interest—if people pledge money or make pre-orders it’s a good indicator of appetite for your solution. Think about the types of incentives you can offer to increase conversions (e.g., discounts, free swag). Or, instead of aiming for an order, perhaps you can ask visitors to submit their email to receive notifications about the product’s launch.
Know somebody who’d benefit from Scott’s advice about using landing pages to test new product and business ideas? Share this post with your followers on Twitter.
Falling in love with the problem
Each of the above techniques can be used to assess the viability of your product or service before going all in, which could save you tremendous amounts of time and money. It’s important to note that each approach requires constant testing and iteration.
The results of your landing page experiments should be seen as a guiding force that can move you in the right direction—if your original concept doesn’t pan out, don’t be afraid of making modifications.
This brings us back to my mantra:
Fall in love with the problem, not the solution.
Being flexible means you can adapt your product or service to better address the problem you want to solve, which ultimately leads to a more successful business—and a more satisfied customer.

The Top Of The Funnel
Whether you have a e-commerce business, a SAAS business, a media business, a marketplace business, or some other business model, you are going to start thinking about customer acquisition at some point.
And there are a lot of options out there for acquiring customers; direct sales, indirect sales, channel, search engine marketing, social media, email, display, etc, etc.
But the best option, if you can pull it off, is to own an organic customer acquisition channel that is large and that sustains itself.
At USV, we have investments in a bunch of companies that have very large organic and sustainable top of the funnel customer flows. Many of these companies use a number of customer acquisition techniques, but they start with the organic channel and optimize it with their product development efforts.
Here are a few examples:
Codecademy – Codecademy offers a number of subscription learning services to people who want to learn to code. But because it has been offering free curriculum for learning to code for six years now, it was the first organic result I got this morning when I typed “learn to code” into Google:
Quizlet – Quizlet offers over 200mm study sets on the web and mobile to people who want to study and master something. No matter what you want to learn, you can find a study set on Quizlet to learn it. Quizlet is the “Wikipedia of studying” and because these study sets are free on the web and mobile, they have a huge organic flow of new users every month. Quizlet offers two subscription offerings to students and one to teachers and this organic flow is the primary customer acquisition channel for these offerings.
SoundCloud – SoundCloud is the first place most musicians go to post their music on the Internet. There are upwards of 200mm tracks on SoundCloud, the vast majority of which are free for anyone to listen to. This content is a huge attraction for listeners on web and mobile. SoundCloud has three subscription offerings, two for listeners and one for creators. The organic channel is the primary acquisition mechanism for these subscription offerings.
Kickstarter – When a project creator launches a Kickstarter project, they share it with as many people as they can through email, social, blogging, etc. This brings millions of backers to Kickstarter every month. Most of those backers arrive to consider backing a specific project and move on. But enough of them stick around to see what else is going on that Kickstarter has been able to build a large and sustainable business without any need for paid marketing channels.
Etsy – Etsy is now a public company and is no longer a USV portfolio company but I am the Chairman and remain actively involved with Etsy. Etsy is similar to Kickstarter in that sellers who have shops on Etsy are actively promoting their shops through various channels. Most of the buyers who arrive on Etsy that way purchase from the seller who brought them but some stay and shop from other sellers too. Etsy explained in it’s IPO filing that the vast majority of it’s traffic was organic. That is slowly changing but in Etsy’s early years, all of the traffic was organic.
I could keep going but I think you get the point. One of the things I look for in an investment is a free and sustainable flow of customers. This big top of the funnel may not be the only way a management team will choose to build their business but it makes a great foundation to build on and the LTV/CAC is infinite.

Online Marketing was fought by P&G, and Marketing won
A tremor rumbled through the electronic advertising world in July if Proctor & Gamble announced that they had cut $140 million of electronic invest in one quarter. P&G Chief Financial Officer Jon Moeller noted that the decrease had two triggers:
[We made a choice] to temporarily stop spending with electronic media outlets at which our ads were not being placed based on our standards and specifications…. [We left] a option to decrease spending, by an electronic standpoint, in which it was ineffective — where either we were serving robots  instead of human beings or in which the positioning of ads wasn’t facilitating the equity of our brands.
Many (well, all) pundits assumed that the “areas where ads were not being placed based on our standards” mention was a not-very-opaque reference to YouTube and the hullabaloo around brand security earlier this year. And also the “bot” mention is no doubt a critique of screen advertising — both the programmatic and superior.
Is this really P&G’s issue?
If P&G says anything about advertising, the industry listens. In the end, the business spends roughly $10 billion a year on advertising.
However, is history. The business has 18 manufacturers that do more than $1 billion of annual earnings. And really, the majority of these are products that consumers pick over a more affordable choice (e.g., toothpaste, paper towels, dish soap), therefore that branding must be really powerful.
Because of This, many commentators have drawn the conclusion that if P&G is cutting back on electronic invest, digital advertising must be broken:
When among the very sophisticated high-tech advertisers on the planet decides it’s overspending on electronic advertising and can  very carefully  eliminate the rust, thus bringing down its costs without hurting its own earnings, other companies will follow, using a few implications for the relentless but often wasteful surge of electronic advertising dollars.
A question of robots
Contrarian that I am, I think that P&G understands as much about electronic advertising since J.C. Penney understands about e-commerce — that is to say, not as much.
P&G claims that a great deal of its advertising spend was wasted on robots, which can be straight-up ad fraud. Bots certainly exist, and advertising fraud remains a problem on networks. However, if we suppose that 50 percent of decrease was due to cutting bot traffic out, it looks like the firm spent $70 million on traffic. In 3 months. Assuming a $2 CPM, that’s 35 billion fraudulent impressions.
Why did it take 35 billion opinions to find the fraud, and also did not P&G request a refund from its own advertising networks and agencies? I mean, fool me once, shame fool me personally 35 billion times!
There are two methods to prevent $70 million of bot traffic to networks. To begin with, do a holdout check to evaluate incrementality. Measure KPIs shift budget and a week by channel and publisher.
My guess is that P&G — and their agencies — did neither. They purchased traffic based on murky top-of-funnel “metrics” like “reach” and purchased a lot of 35-year-old feminine … bots.
Ad exchanges will need to do everything they can to eliminate traffic, but attributing an exchange for getting scammed countless times is a sign of laziness or ineptness. Ones have figured out how to avoid most of it, although all electronic marketers must deal with fraud.
Brand Security problems
Regarding P&G’s brand security issues, I understand how important it would be for a brand to prevent showing up on racist sites, and it seems like YouTube was somewhat too lax in its own policing of content (that they seem to have addressed that). That said, the internet is amazing because of the long run of the available, which means that it’s impossible to run ads on the internet that an ad wo show up to the website.
As someone really smart (me!) Stated in The Wall Street Journal about electronic advertising, “The benefit is you have access to several million publishers and a billion articles. The disadvantage is you have access to several million publishers and a billion articles.”
Therefore brands that are accustomed to purchasing ads for particular TV shows at times are going to have to get used to a little more doubt with online advertising. Going into a corner to sulk and pulling all of your spend will just allow your opponents to take away market share.
The changing retail environment
Meanwhile, the world around P&G is shifting quickly, and usually not to its own benefit. Historically, P&G has obtained by constructing great brands and then obtaining supermarkets to give these brands prominent placement in stores (and supermarkets were pleased to get it done — these brands sold much better than naturally-occurring rivals). Branding success gave P&G a real estate benefit to put it another way.
However, what happens when consumers stop visiting grocery stores? Online grocery store spending is projected into top $100 billion by 2025, and goods like “personal attention and beauty,” that P&G depends on, are more likely to be bought online than offline. And, like it or not, TV promotion — that the basic principles of P&G’s success — is giving up more and more ground to online advertising.
Meanwhile, there’s a little firm in Seattle called Amazon that just purchased Whole Foods and would love to be the supermarket of the future. Presently, if you do a search for “laundry detergent” on Amazon, P&G’s manufacturers (and Unilever’s) dominate the real estate, just like at a supermarket. However, Amazon hates missing an opportunity to improve its own profit, as retailers have found, and a few of the ways it’s doing so is by private-labeling its own products. The “Amazon Basics” line now has over 1,300 merchandise. And guess what? Whenever you do a search for a item that its own Amazon Basics line is offered in by Amazon, Amazon’s goods receive top billing.
Join the dots between a supermarket purchase and a private label line that is growing, plus it doesn’t seem crazy that Amazon will offer.
And then there are upstarts like Brandless (disclosure: a client of my service) who believe that millennials care more about a provider’s values and also a product’s ingredients than lofty brand promises. Check their product line out — it looks similar to P&G.   Furthermore, a recent Kickstarter from Brandless competitor Public Goods– increased 3X what it was initially looking for, demonstrating that the appetite for non-traditional non-P&G healthcare alternatives.
Put together this all executed the decline of the supermarket, marketing, and the rise of Amazon, online marketing and direct sellers that are online — and it seems to me that P&G would be better served interrupting itself than whining about bot traffic.

5. TomboyX Shopify Success Story
Tumblr media
Fran, the founder of TomboyX launched her Shopify store after raising $76,000 in Kickstarter.
Fran's used her frustration to find cool boxers and shirts as a way to find designs and collections that resonated with her ideal customer audience.
Her brand caters to thousands of women who work in blue-collar where traditional women’s' underwear doesn't work. She listened, provided, and success followed.
Shopify Success Takeaway: Focus on What Your Customers Want
For your Shopify store to be a success, you need to stop focusing so much on selling and more on solving your customer problems.
Customers are more willing to invest in solutions than they are in products, no matter how small or big the problem might be for them.
When TomboyX started, they only did shirts, but after launching underwear, they realized that this new bestseller was providing a solution to a problem they didn't know their demographic had in the first place.
So how do you showcase or create a product that solves a customer's problem? You start by listening to your customer and pivot accordingly. Here are some helpful guides on how to listen, find customers, and make changes to your Shopify store to help you grow:

6. Meow Meow Tweet Shopify Success Story
Tumblr media
Life and business partners Tara Pelletier and Jeff Kurosaki are the visual artists and founders behind Meow Meow Tweet.
They used Shopify to sell and distribute their organic vegan skincare company known for its products made from natural ingredients and its sustainable packaging. Not to mention it's whimsical illustrations and name.
In addition to donating and supporting organizations that align with its values, Meow Meow Tweet offers a bulk refill program to reduce packaging and waste and a system for customers who would like to return their empty containers for the team to reuse.
Shopify Success Takeaway: Add Ways to Customers Can Repeat Purchases.
The Meow Meow Tweet process encouraged customers to buy the first product with a small amount and can buy in bulk when repurchasing—allowing them to sample the item and save the environment.
When you create a way for customers to return to your eCommerce store for another purchase, you reduce your customer churn. Customer churn is when customers leave after making one or two purchases.
So why is this important?
The probability of selling to an existing customer is 60 – 70%, while the probability of selling to a new prospect is 5-20%. Existing customers are 50% more likely to try new products and spend 31% more than new customers.
Instead of focusing so much on acquiring new customers, set up systems, programs, and marketing campaigns, you can use to return past customers.

7. The Scent Market Shopify Success Story
Tumblr media
The Scent Market is a mompreneur founded brand and a handmade scented candle company that's based in Vancouver. In their first campaign, Wishpond helped The Scent Marketing to earn over $15,000 in sales with a giveaway campaign for the holiday.
Shopify Success Takeaway: Create a Unique Offer for Customers
In order to counteract this mindset, our Wishpond team needed to craft a campaign with a unique offer to attract them back to The Scent Markets site.
Too many offers and you can confuse or overwhelm potential customers with choice paradox.
The paradox of choice is an observation that having many options to choose from, rather than making people happy and ensuring they get what they want, can cause them stress and problematize decision-making.
With this principle in mind, our Wishpond marketing team crafted a digital marketing campaign using "Free Shipping" as the one pull to drive sales and The Scent Market's candles benefit and story.
Free shipping for purchases over $150 was used as a lead magnet.
