Alexey Ignashov - Wikipedia
Belarusian kickboxer
Alexey Victoravich Ignashov[1] (Belarusian: Аляксей Ігнашоў; born January 18, 1978) is a Belarusian Super Heavyweight kickboxer. He is a four-time Muay Thai World champion, K-1 World GP 2003 in Paris and K-1 World GP 2001 in Nagoya tournament champion.[2] He is currently living in Auckland, New Zealand and training at Balmoral Lee Gar Gym under Lollo Heimuli.[3]
Biography
He is best known for his knee strikes, notably used to score knockout wins over Badr Hari, Semmy Schilt, Nicholas Pettas, and Carter Williams. Ignashov is considered by his fans to be one of the most talented and technically sound heavyweight kickboxers in the world. However, he is also considered by many as frustratingly inconsistent, occasionally appearing lackluster or inactive in the ring, such as in his K-1 Final quarterfinal match against Peter Aerts in 2003. He suffered a knee injury in a fight against Bjorn Bregy in 2005. Since then, his performance has diminished.
Ignashov trained in the Chinuk gym for 11 years, before immigrating to New Zealand in 2006.
He has beaten the best kickboxers in the world, including decision wins over three times K-1 champions Remy Bonjasky and Peter Aerts and knockout highlight reel wins over two currently best kickboxers in the world Semmy Schilt and Badr Hari. He has also fought legendary Rob Kaman, losing by decision, but after that fight Rob gave the trophy to Ignashov. Despite all those huge wins, he has lost some bouts where he was a huge favorite. He was TKO'd only two times, each time because of injury, against Bjorn Bregy in 2005 and in his 2009 bout against 2003 French Kickboxing champion Freddy Kemayo.
After 5 years of being out of the major ring events Iggy was granted his wish to return to K-1 in April 2010 against Badr Hari, having one of the best chins in the sport. However he was very inactive in the ring and lost by unanimous decision. He was heavily criticized by the fans after the fight. Ignashov announced that he wants to have a rubber match with Badr Hari after he has a few more K-1 fights to get used to the big ring again. Just recently he competed in his 99 official fight while winning with Freddy Kemayo. He made his comeback after one year at 12 May 2012 in Budapest Hungary losing a decision against Ali Cenik.
He defeated Zinedine Hameur-Lain via decision in Kazan, Russian on 20 October 2012.[4] Just a week later, he was defeated by Tomáš Hron by unanimous decision at Nitrianska Noc Bojovnikov in Nitra, Slovakia.[5]
He was scheduled to fight Benjamin Adegbuyi on 10 November 2012 in Craiova, Romania, in the quarter-finals of the SuperKombat World Grand Prix 2012 Final Elimination.[6][7] Unfortunately, due a broken finger he had to pull out of the event.[8]
On 23 February 2013, he defeated the overmatched Martynas Knyzlis on points in Moscow, Russia.[9]
Ignashov had his rubber match with Badr Hari at Legend 2: Invasion in Moscow on 9 November 2013, losing by unanimous decision in yet another lackluster fight.[10][11][12]
Ignashov is slated to fight Andonis "Wrangler" Tzoros in Greece for the WKN K-1 Super Heavyweight Championship on April 26, 2015.[13]

Interview with Anouk Post
The Dutch H.E.M.A. Federation has a board with fixed members, but who are these members? What inspires them? In order to introduce these people to you, we will be interviewing a different board member every two weeks.
Read this post on our official website here.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Anouk Post, I’m 28 years old and I’m the new board member for external communications. I’m responsible mostly for the Communications Commission, which is in charge of keeping the Facebook page up-to-date, making sure members are informed of what’s going on, and spreading interesting news and articles.
I live in Waddinxveen with Martin de Jong, who, like me, practices H.E.M.A. (which prevents a lot of irritation about weapons and books lying around). In my day-to-day life I work as an audiology technician in a laboratory in Haarlem. I make custom earpieces for, amongst other things, hearing aids, and ear protection for festivals. It’s incredibly fun and varied work, but I do need to be extra careful with my fingers because I work with my hands a lot. This doesn’t make it quite an ideal combination with longsword and military sabre training.
In spite of my sedentary work I like to be physically active. I go to the gym regularly and also like to run. In my free time I enjoy reading, writing and partaking in other creative endeavors like leatherworking and costume design. In addition to this all, I have a fulltime job in keeping my two Abessinian cats happy. They see me as their personal valet, which is, of course, completely justified.
How did you end up in H.E.M.A.?
I’ve always been active in sports, which started with fifteen years of fanatic horse riding. After that came running and kickboxing – until, when I was 21, I was told that I had a vague issue with my joints, which meant they were too unstable for me to be able to exercise without any pain or issues. This was hard for me to take and for a long time I thought the doctors were right. Because of this, I didn’t participate in sports for almost two years. In 2012 a friend told me that I should be able to sword fight if I used an altered training. I was skeptical at first, but a ten-minute lesson turned into half an hour, half an hour turned in to an hour with sparring, and before I knew it I was actively exercising again.
Where do you train?
At the moment I mostly train with Historisch Vrijvechten Nederland in Oegstgeest. Besides the fact that it’s on my route from work to my house, training at HVN also gives me the ability to choose between longsword and sabre, which is my other great love. I also train at show and performance group Bataille in Utrecht, which is a fantastic group that focuses on using H.E.M.A. in stunt and fighting choreography.
What are your interests within H.E.M.A.?
As I mentioned before, I mostly train in longsword. My focus used to be very much on competitions. I went to the gym, trained multiple times a week and fought in any match I could. I took great pleasure from the challenges that competitions bring with them: the ambition, the drive to reach goals and the pressure that can greatly motivate you (or work against you). I didn’t only focus on the physical aspect, the training, but also on the psychological side; why am I nervous? How do I deal with performance anxiety and why do I have it? I was very busy with the sports aspect, and less so with, for example, reading the sources.
Recently my focus has been changing. In the past year and a half I’ve been training in sabre as well. I noticed that I was becoming tired of competitions, but I was also risking injury with every match. That’s something I can’t afford right now. Time-wise, my new focus also works better for me since I now work fulltime in a city that requires some traveling. When you’re sitting in a train, it’s a lot easier to read a treatise than it is to practice with a sword.
My love for sabre was awakened after a workshop in Siebenhaar sabre by Ties Kool during Swordfish 2015. I had already been looking around for a different weapon to train with in order to broaden my horizon, and during the workshop something just clicked. I dove in to research about different sources and styles as soon as I got home, and went on from there.
I enjoy and have an interest in every kind of sabre. It’s like having found a toy store and being allowed to choose just one item to play with. Because choosing to study ‘everything’ is a bit ambitious, I’m currently focusing on Roworth’s saber, an English style from circa 1800. I also have the ambition to some day continue with Radaelli’s North-Italian military-style sabre, but I can hardly do everything at once.
Recently I have been offered the chance to teach workshops during various events. Teaching, putting together workshops, translating information I find interesting into something useable, is a completely new challenge. I’ve noticed that my enthusiasm, which has seen a bit of a decline after choosing to compete less, has definitely been revived. I had to find a new way to give color to my hobby, and I think teaching workshops and being part of the board of the federation is definitely a way to do so.
What was your motivation to become a board member?
I realized that I had no idea what the federation did, or why we even had a federation in the first place. I was a member but didn’t feel involved at all. That’s what was on my mind when I applied for the position of board member for external communications. I knew that I now had the time and energy to dedicate myself to the federation, especially now that I was looking for a different way to be a part of H.E.M.A. besides training and competing. I wanted to make the federation more visible. More fun. I wanted to engage members by providing articles, interviews and news, by having a clear and structured website. I hope to have managed to do so by the end of these two years.

Ibrahim El Bouni Pursues The Martial Arts Dream That His Brother Was Denied
Ibrahim “Mr. Cool” El Bouni is skilled, entertaining, and prepared to show the world he is ready to become a ONE Super Series World Champion on Saturday, 7 July.
The Moroccan will make his ONE Championship debut at ONE: PINNACLE OF POWER against Australia’s Andre “The Giant” Meunier in a 105-kilogram kickboxing bout inside the Guangzhou Tianhe Gymnasium in China.
He may just be 25, but he already has a 36-6-1 professional record, and picked up the A1WCC Kickboxing World Championship after defeating three opponents in one night. He also had an impressive run of stoppages, which confirmed his reputation as a dangerous opponent for any heavyweight.
“I won 10 bouts in a row, all by knockout in the first round,” he says. “I am proud of that.”
“When I step into the ring, do not look at your phone or anything. You have to focus on me, or you will miss something. I will give the ONE Championship fans something special.”
Entertainment has been at the forefront or “Mr. Cool’s” mind since an early age.
Born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, he was a popular kid, but perhaps not the most focused student in school.
“My childhood was very relaxed,” says El Bouni.
“I was a kid who was always playing and joking. I was outside the house most of the time – always out late.
“I did not do well in the lessons. I did not want to learn that stuff, and did not take it seriously. I just liked to joke and play, and this got me into some trouble.”
Growing up with two rambunctious brothers, martial arts were an appealing alternative to academia.
At the age of 11, El Bouni’s older brother, Abdel Hadi, took him to join Gym Haarlem, so he could have an outlet for his excess energy.
The facility’s trainer was a neighbour who had already trained one member of the family. He recognised kickboxing would be an ideal pursuit for young Ibrahim, too.
“My brother suggested I go along, and since then, it has been training, training, training,” he says.
“I saw it like a PlayStation game. I did not take it seriously. I thought: ‘If you spar with me, I am going to play and joke with you. I will make you dizzy.’ That is what I liked.”
In order to become a success, however, El Bouni had to learn a hard lesson.
Abdel Hadi did not think his younger brother was taking his training seriously enough, so he banned him from the gym. If he wanted to make a living from martial arts, he needed to learn the value of the discipline he was training.
“I was always training at the gym, but also playing,” he recalls. “I was playing too much and making jokes in the gym lessons. My brother made me take a one-year break because of that.
“I missed the first month, and then asked him again. He would say, ‘Monday, we can go,’ but every week he said that, and it took a year before he finally let me go back.”
When he was allowed to go back to Gym Haarlem “Mr. Cool” knew he could not afford to lose that kind of time again. Determined not to miss out on any more opportunities, he restarted his training with renewed focus.
He would also get further encouragement to take his training seriously when his elder brother suffered a serious knee injury, which meant he would never be able to compete.
It had been Abdel Hadi’s dream to compete for a living, and now it was up to his little brother to chase his goals in his stead.
“My brother told me to go do it, because he could not. He was the better one, but I got the experience. He got injured before he got the chance, so I do it for him and my family,” El Bouni explains.
“My trainer got me my first match in 2010. I was 17 or 18. He said I was not ready, but he wanted to see what I could do.
“That motivated me. I had the first one, and it was a draw. After that, I knew I wanted kickboxing to be my career. I kept training, and kept winning.”
Ever since returning to the gym and doing everything his coach asked of him, El Bouni has reaped the rewards.
He channelled his personality into a unique style and earned fans around the world. He is a creative, hugely entertaining kickboxer with a big bag of tricks to draw techniques from.
He was a dominant force in his amateur career, and after turning professional at 20 years old, he has had great success for such a young man in the dangerous waters of the heavyweight division.
Slaying “The Giant” in style in Guangzhou would his greatest triumph yet, and put him on the path towards his the biggest prize in martial arts.
