Para badminton coach Gaurav Khanna recommended for Dronacharya - Click on link to subscribe my channel https://ift.tt/34vXvMA Facebook - https://ift.tt/2Vjiyz6 Twitter - https://twitter.com/HsrSports Pinterest - https://ift.tt/2ywdZIH Tumblr - https://ift.tt/2z5qwmL Blog - https://ift.tt/2VlBDRu #Sports #Sports_News #Tournament Gaurav Khanna, centre, with his players. HYDERABAD: From an RPF commando to a Dronacharya, the life of Gaurav Khanna is an inspiration for many. After missing out thrice, the coach who helped para shuttlers win 340 international medals, which also include world championship golds, produced world No.1 players has been finally honoured with the Dronacharya. "Finally, I got this recognition. I missed it thrice but I am really happy to get it now. Sometimes you need this sort of motivation. After working hard for so many years and producing results and getting no rewards, your family gets demotivated. Because I have taken their time and have spent it elsewhere. Now, they are happy," said Khanna, who transformed the para badminton scene in India. Moved by the plight of several deaf youngsters, Khanna, a former national badminton player, encouraged them in whatever way he could. He soon identified their talent and encouraged them to take up badminton. Being able bodied it is tough to learn sign language. But Khanna had overcome that barrier with ease. He soon became the national coach of the deaf badminton team. Later, he was nominated as coach for the Asian team in the continental championships. In 2013, internal rumblings affected the functioning of the national para badminton association. Khanna was offered the post of chief coach of the para team in 2015. From then on there was no looking back. When he took over, there was not even a single national camp to train the players. There was no proper base nor sponsors. "I managed to organise a camp at SAI Gandhinagar before the 2015 world championships. We won 13 medals that year," Khanna said, adding that the player base for para badminton was very less. "For the nationals we used to get only 40-50 players. But by Bangalore nationals in 2017 we had 150 players. The next year at Varanasi we had 235 entries and in 2019 at Uttarakhand we had more than 300 entries," Khanna said. While there is still no clarity on which able bodied shuttler would represent India at the Tokyo Olympics, five para shuttlers have already qualified. When all the quotas are finalised there may be two more qualifiers as well. "I am expecting six to seven players because of the restrictions we have. But one thing is sure, all those who qualify will win medals," the chief coach said. Another interesting contribution of Khanna is that he managed to secure sponsors for para shuttlers. "The government is supporting us now. Moreover, we are also getting individual sponsors. Go Sports Foundation is supporting five players, Olympic Gold Quest six and Wellspun two. Interestingly, 75 para shuttlers are part of the Khelo India programme," Khanna said. From a stage where there were no proper training facilities, para shuttlers are now having coaches, physios and trainers. A full fledged para badminton academy, named after him, is coming up in Lucknow. Credit : Times of India Source: https://ift.tt/325hhhs
