What were your thoughts about KHearts before you got into it vs Now having been into it? Also late welcome to the community hope you've had fun!
thankyou :D!! i have had fun, sitting in my little crevice and exporting my xigbar images and xigbar posts. im happy that people have connected with it in some way :]
thoughts about KH before i got into it:
for some reason i was under the impression that the games were about a boy who has dreams about disney worlds. and he has regular size feet in the real world and only has big feet in the dream world. i also think he traveled with mickey and not donald or goofy
also for some reason i was under the impression that ventus was sora's dad. it was not until i actually watched the cutscenes in birth by sleep and saw lea and isa that i realized OH. this is NOT as far back on the timeline as i thought it was
images of a spiky red boy and a spiky blond boy and a black haired depressed girl eating ice cream together with lots&lots of people sobbing in the replies. (REALLY emphasized the slow creeping emotional dread of that game for me. like golly i sure hope i dont get emotionally destroyed like all those other people! and then i , was)
when i was in middle/high school i had friends who were super into it, but i was never able to play it because my parents had a policy of No Consoles. we were allowed to have handhelds, though, because my family took frequent road trips, so when i found out that there was a KH game for DS i said to a friend "oh, cool! dyou think id be able to play it without playing the other games?" and she looked at me, and looked at her copy of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and said "........no"
only ~15 years later do i realize how funny of a question that was
thoughts about KH as i was getting into it:
too numerous to count. i shall attempt to keep it moderately brief
last year my husband listened to a podcast called "lore dump" where people explain the lore of different media to each other, and they did an episode/series on kingdom hearts, and i heard some pretty WaCkY sTuFf (i specifically remember them explaining what the recusant's sigil is, in the context of xigbar explaining that they'd been tracking sora and riku through the story of DDD)
found a vod of one of my favorite streamers streaming 1 and 2 to benefit abortion rights in texas, and i was like, well, here's my chance, heh, im gonna understand all of the WaCkY LoRe
i start up the stream. within the first 15 minutes i Get it. like it feels very dated in a lot of ways but i instantly understood what made people connect so strongly with this series. even as someone who didn't grow up with any attachment to it, and was a little put off of it even by how into it my friends were, to me kh1 is just pure high octane nostalgia. the tone is so specific and warm and bittersweet. i cried multiple times during the ending. it just really got to me! i was hooked!
when i fixate on a media property i like to have a hot person to chew on. i really. really thought it was gonna be axel. he is exactly the kind of character i would've fixated on when i was younger, when i had friends who were into KH. older mentor figure character who takes younger characters under his wing. associated with fire. projects brash confidence. k,ills people. he's a really good character! i love him a lot! every time he appears on screen i get on all fours and start barking! and there's all this fanart and merch and...then i got distracted......
hey blake in early 2023. it's me, blake in late 2024. have you heard of kingdom hearts. yeah. yeah youre gonna get really into it. yeah youre gonna have the longest running blorbo since you mega-fixated on the tenth doctor when you were 14. yeah. yeah um. you know the clip where the guy says "me? i'm already half xehanort!" and sora says "that's..nuts!"? yeah that guy? yeah. yeah. that guy. the half xehanort guy. yeah youre gonna make a fool of yourself online for that guy.

Fanfic Year Wrap-Up Thing
In which I want to do an overview of the fics I’ve written this year, and also encourage others to do the same! So, feel free to add your own fics to the post!
Longest Fic
The Billiard Ball and the Wormhole.
TBBatW is 46k words long and I think the first new thing I wrote this year. It’s a Trigun fic where past Vash swaps places with Vash from episode 8-ish of Stampede.
Shortest Fic
Rose Lungs, which is barely over 1k words. It’s a Kingdom Hearts fic of Lauriam waking up after being recompleted, lightly touching on how he feels about that, his motives, and also the fact he’s literally made out of flowers.
Most Popular (kudos)
Skipping any older fics I updated, that’d be How to Snare a Rabbit. It’s a FNaF fic where Michael (and someone else) travels back in time to before the murders, and so now gets to try and prevent them while also trying to catch William enough in the act to get him arrested. Although, ha, never got that far.
Least Popular (kudos)
Puppets, Off Stage, which is a shame bc I love this one. It’s a FFVII fic about the similarities between Cloud and Cait, specifically about how Cait is a puppet and Cloud doesn’t understand how Cait can be okay with that. The lack of love might be a bit on me tho bc I do like to hide a lot of my story from my summaries.
Personal Favorite
Ugh, I’ve written too many fics this year, and a lot of character study type fics that I love. Gotta go with,
The Never-Ending Road Trip. It’s a FFVII time loop Fic that follows Zack Fair as he tries to keep Cloud alive. It was a fun way to explore his character and the relationship he has with his comatose bestie. Also, I really enjoyed playing around with the idea of someone who is in a time loop but has no idea all the rules of it, how long it goes on, or even that there’s more people caught up in it than just him.
Honorable Mentions
The Double Life of Donald Duck - DT17 and KH Donald are the same duck, and how the triplets find that out.
Hopes and Dreams and Reality - Undertale. Toriel character exploration in a post Pacifist-Neutral run where something is wrong with the Barrier.
Reformed from Earth - KH. Terra, and the inherent trauma of trying to remember how to be human after your body was used to traumatize your peers.

And now for the good guys!
Mario
Obviously.
Kirby
Probably a bit overqualified to escape literal Hell, honestly.
Nimbus
The main protagonist of "The Cloud's Songbird." Easily the most level-headed of the Avatars.
Tulip
The main protagonist of Tulip's Road Trip. Both Nimbus and Tulip belong to @forthedancingandthethriving
Tune Dark
As an outlaw, she has the loosest morals out of everyone, which does cause some tension with a few of the other Avatars.
Sora
From Kingdom Hearts. Due to a combination of Important Lore Numbers and all the KH memes about how characters who are supposed to be copies of other characters tend to look nothing like who they're based on, his SMGs are recolors of Roxas and Xion instead of him.
Arle Nadja
Yes, the one who shares her avatar slot with Doppelganger Arle.
Ash Ketchum
The new kid of the bunch since he only activated a couple months ago, but also the one with the biggest reason to take Barry down. His Pokemon didn't get transported with him since they're separate characters.
Shantae
She hasn't been the Avatar that much longer than Ash, so they get to be out of their depth and still adjusting to all that Meme Energy together.
There's also Laharl from the Disgaea series, but instead of joining either group he spends most of the arc trying to conquer Computer Hell and occasionally picking fights with all the other Avatars. Especially Lord Ramagog, because two demonic warlords with extremely different beliefs in one place is a recipe for disaster.

reverse unpopular opinion: the big kingdom hearts
its hard to narrow it down to any one thing but if i had to its the series's immense understanding of tragedy and catharsis and what makes pain important. its a deeply earnest series but not in a way (at the best of times) where it feels naive, just that it Cares about what its saying. kingdom hearts says it is important to love, even if you can't remember that love, even if you don't really remember what its for, because that love will keep existing. one of the moments of kh that sticks out to me the most (without spoilers lol) is from coded, which makes the argument that pain is good and necessary because by understanding another person's pain, you share it. it doesnt focus on healing the pain, or moving past it, it says "this is important, and you should feel this, and you shouldn't feel this alone." chain of memories says fear is a sign of a strong heart. it says someone will care, someone will miss you, and it is sad what you are going through.
like the fundamental story of kh1 is that sora's entire world is destroyed, and he's thrust into a situation he has no way of conceptualizing, and so hes basically stuck on an extended road trip with two guys bringing him Somewhere and they care about him enough but they dont really know how to talk to kids and like. yeah sora is having fun sometimes, hes feeling ok sometimes, but most of the time its just underpinned by this deep sadness of "everything is gone, and its horrible. and he doesnt get to express that in that game until its too late. smiles serenely.
its just. its a very good tragic series and a very good series about confusion and pain and tragedy and just. hearing someone out. kh2 has my absolute favorite moment related to this but its both spoilers and incredibly difficult to explain without context its just. ill try. what if there was a boy who had to disappear to bring your friend back. and you can do it and your friend will never know this happened and everything can be fine but that boy used to be your friend too. and you care so deeply about your friend you cannot feel any malice towards these people who are sapping his strength and memories, and you save the only existing picture of this boy in a box for your friend to find. to validate his existence in any small way you can, because it mattered that he existed, the things he cared about mattered. your own guilt matters too. what if everything had to turn out this way, but it hurts now, and it might hurt forever, but you can still claw your way to genuine catharsis and peace
youtube
LISTEN TO KAIRI's THEME AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THE HOPE AND MELENCHOLY AND WISTFUL TRAGEDY YOU WILL HAVE FRIENDS AND YOUR PATHS WILL DIVERGE AND YOU WILL DESTROY YOUR WORLD JUST TO LEAVE IT. you will be jealous, and this is tragic, you will be lonely, and this is tragic, you will lose yourself and the things you love, but the love meant something. what matters to you means something.

ffxvi, xv, kh discord rambling
Wow ffxiv's ffxvi event has major spoilers. It's the big reveal of the first arc? 2nd arc? I mean ffxvi isnt very good and not worth playing idk how much people care. Just comparing it to the ffxv event.
16's main problem is that it frontloads the game but doesn't set up the narrative for the rest. So the prologue feels amazing and the first half feels good but because it doesn't invest in the story and build up eventually the hype runs out and the story crumbles in the later half. A story doesn't need to be perfect it just needs to be convincing and with 16 the writing flaws eventually become so glaring that the game can't out run them with flashy distractions.
I like 15 better. 16 is very flashy and a hype beast but it has very little substance. All the surface level details are there like cool boss fights and good voice acting and music but the writing falls flat. The character arcs go no where or backtrack. The game cant decide if jill is important or not and the writers forget about her at multiple points.
15 is a hot mess between the different visions of the two directors but it manages to have heart. Like do you want world ending plot or fun road trip because a better road trip plot would be one where the goal is exploring or collecting the plot items scattered across the land. 15 also desperately needed royal's expanded last arc. With royal it's actually pretty good.
Do you remember that insane dev cycle for ff15? It was like 7? 10?? Years and started out as versus 13. I dont remember the actual timeline. But yeah versus xiii started out this urban fantasy with like battles between skyscrapers. And then it just kept not coming out and dragging on and on and i think there was something going on internally with the company because the game swapped titles and then directors. Yeah they kept changing their minds about what they wanted the game to be and so the end result doesnt quite have that unified vision. I really respect the second director for taking this absolute disaster and making something pretty good out of it.
And nomura (first director) is SOOO SALTY about all this. I dont know if you're familiar with kingdom hearts but nomura poured all his versus xiii ideas into it. I mean noctis lucis caelum is night light sky and the kh3 character is yozora which means night sky. The cutscenes match one to one with the old versis 13 trailers. Urban fantasy with boss battles in the city. Sooooo salty.
youtube
he definitely wanted to use these ideas. And then he got booted off the ff15 project. Hmm let me find that comparison video.
youtube
Its not a perfect 1 to 1 match sync but this is VERY deliberate. Like the fictional game (just roll with it) yozora is from is called verum rex because nomura loves fake latin. And in the fictional trailer there ignis and luna 2.0 and yozora is the same pose as nostis was in advertisements. nomura took the concepts from versus 13 and one for 1 put them in kh3. Like noctis caelum night sky is a character in kh3 called yozora night sky. Or he exactly copied the trailer

Me: /sees today's yesterday's prompt
Me: /maniacal cackling
Me: YOU FOOL, YOU’VE ACTIVATED MY TRAP CARD
aka AUs, Time Travel, and identity shenanigans are my biggest interests in any fandom at all so KH drew me in for a reason. This will be fun. Enjoy or suffer through my rambling about my main AU. I apologize for the length, but there’s a reason I had the immediate reaction I did.
Also sorry it’s a day late, yesterday was thesis presentations and then I was dragged out to drinks and karaoke after by my classmates so I didn’t have time to finish this.
@khoc-week Day 4: Alternate Universes
Hahahaha my first KH au I made when I was 15 and then spiraled WILDLY out of control after KHUX finished and DR happened.
So this au started as one of those “what if someone from our world died and reincarnated as a main character” fics that were so popular in the 2010’s, but over time it changed significantly. The main premise is still the same, girl from our world dies to a Heartless that really shouldn’t have been there and her heart makes a conveniently timed connection with Ven, and then reincarnates as Sora. Except it’s not quite as convenient as it seems because Kingdom Hearts itself is meddling.
Because her heart was actually Etheria’s.
This is my biggest KH au that’s lasted almost ten years now, it’s extremely self-indulgent and I keep making adjustments to it as we get new info, but I think I have it plotted out solidly. It’s also the one that’s technically canon to my keykids.
So, KHUX happens as it does, no real changes beyond Etheria and Ephemera finishing up Game Central Station together and coming back to Daybreak Town in time to trigger the finale. Etheria traps the darknesses in the tunnel, they wound her fatally, she dies holding Chirithy, etc.
The change comes with what’s next. Because Nomura BAITED US and I had an entire year to sit on my plans before the Dark Road finale dropped and ruined them all, and I decided “screw it, I can work around this”. And kind of. Threw out canon to a degree.
Yiskah is reincarnated after the Keyblade War as the Missing Link protag, so whatever reveals we get there will be his story. Etheria reincarnates as Xehanort, because I had PLANS NOMURA. So ML happens, Yiskah takes Xehanort to Destiny Islands, all of this will probably follow canon pretty closely. Dark Road also happens as canon, Xehanort having Etheria’s heart doesn’t really change much because these events “need” to happen. Whether it’s Darkness pulling the strings or KH itself… who knows. But DR happens pretty much as canon, and the post-events are where we get our first major split into AU territory.
When Xehanort goes on his lonesome trip around the worlds, trying to gain perspective, it starts as canon with him meeting MoM. But afterwards, when he returns to the Keyblade Graveyard, it’s not the Master of Masters that’s waiting for him but our single unaccounted for Darkness. His trip through the worlds was supposed to make him fall to darkness, make him decide to recreate the war, but because he has Etheria’s heart he… doesn’t. So Darkness takes matters into its own hands and tries to take him over. Naturally he fights back, refuses to let it, so it decides the more optimal route would be to simply remove that problematically light heart and simply claim his body for itself and pretend to be him.
So that happens. He dies, and it’s Darkness in his body who returns to Scala to take the Mark of Mastery with Eraqus, and kick off the next phase of canon.
Etheria/Xehanort’s heart ends reincarnating as a girl on a sort of… reflection of our world, losing their memories upon reincarnating as is supposed to happen, and growing up to be a fan of a certain video game series until dying to a Heartless who was drawn specifically to their heart because Events Are Happening (Ven just got his heart broken and Kingdom Hearts needs someone to go fix it, and who better than an old friend and its valiant champion? Etheria surviving the Keyblade War and her heart touching KH directly in the process was not a good thing for her, just to point that out.) So her heart comes in contact with Ven, shares part of it to fix his, and in the process kind of breaks the usual reincarnation rules so she keeps her memories of this past life, and the thus the memories of the Kingdom Hearts game series.
So at this point: Alana becomes Sora and knows absolutely nothing about being Etheria or Xehanort, but does remember being from “our world”. The Xehanort of this AU is just Darkeness using his identity to push the plot it read in the Book, because that’s What’s Supposed To Happen. For the sake of ~Drama~ I’m going to say she’s caught up to canon for everything except the Final Update of KHUX. To everyone who remembers that cliffhanger they did between the first half of the finale and the second… yeah. Imagine dying and reincarnating into that universe missing HALF THE FINALE OF KHUX and over half of Dark Road. It is endlessly frustrating to them, Ven, and Vani.
From here canon… happens similarly, but also different.
KH1 has Riku being possessed much earlier because Sora convinces him to come back, and Maleficent and Ansem SoD don't like that. Kairi and Ven are both awake and helping, so there's that. Kairi is part of the final battle as an active keyblade wielder, even if she gets pulled home after.
CoM happens very differently because Vanitas is awake with Ven gone in Roxas, so he's Solana's companion while Namine can see Alana's memories and knows far more than she should because of it. She finds so many loopholes to allow Alana to keep memories of CoM, even if Sora's have to be broken later.
KH2 has Xion and Roxas awake and joining Ven and Vani, and things get loud. Roxas takes every chance to try to fight the Organization, drive forms are between the Heart Hotel rather than Donald and Goofy, and Kairi joins the party halfway through after kicking Axel through a wall. She joins them for the final fight against Xemnas too, and then opens the portal for them home.
Solana is busy having a guilt-induced breakdown about their parents never coming back from the islands falling to darkness to participate in Re:Coded, but they do meet the apprentices and start making peace between them and the Restoration Committee when they show back up. They and Ienzo get along... really really well, to their surprise.
DDD is a mess, because the dream world gives the Heart Hotels bodies and they are actively participating in the Mark of Mastery along with Sora, Riku, and Kairi. Ienzo was paranoid enough to make a secondary link with Solana before it started, so when Yen Sid lost contact with them Ienzo could make link so they could see everything happening. Canon happens and it SUCKS. Solana has much trauma from YMX.
KH3 is wildly different, because People Know Things, and Death Deities Are Weird Around Solana (aka Hades and Persephone are closer to their myth forms, and make a deal with Solana about nine death avoidances for a favor, so they only use the power of waking once at the end rather than to save everyone), and Aqua and Ven are rescued before Arendelle so they've got half the game to catch their breath before the war.
And because Darkness is Xehanort, the scene with Eraqus is very different because Solana flat out steals the keyblade from Xehanort at the end of their battle - the same way Riku does from Sora in KH1 - and stabs him with it. No soft scene here, just murder. Eraqus does show up, reassuring Aqua and Terra, but Kairi and Ven swapped places in this AU as the sacrificial being of Pure Light, so... it's much rougher on the Wayfinder Trio. Solana gets him back, though, ala canon, but that's the tenth revival after the first nine so they will disappear eventually, it just won't be immediate since they only did it once. Gives them time to hang out, get Ienzo to put some cameras in the Graveyard to catch the Foreteller meetup, do a heart dive to figure out their weird dreams and accidentally get their memories of KHUX and DR both back to the shock and horror of everyone, and then disappear.
I want you to know that this is the short version, because the longer version accidentally turned into a plot outline.

This fic destroyed at least half of my mutuals when it was first posted, so I think tumblr deserves to see it too:
Shadow Box Kingdom Hearts | Modern AU | rikuvani fake dating | road trip | dealing with grief and loss
Riku hires Vanitas to pose as his lover and accompany him on a long road trip. It should be easy money. It is not.

Wow! Excellent job to the 39.5% of you who voted for number 5.
I understand that… quite a few people were tripped up by the wording on some of these. And that’s okay! It was meant to be as vague as possible to make sure people were actually thinking about it. So I wanted to explain my reasoning for each. It’s gonna get a bit lengthy, so it’ll all be under the cut. Spoilers for the series, too.
Yes, Maleficent does indeed time travel. After Riku-Ansem releases her heart with the Keyblade of heart in KH1, she uses the knowledge of time travel she learned from Xehanort to attempt to travel back to Enchanted Dominion in the Age of Fairytales. However, since the Master of Masters saw this eventuality, he didn’t project Enchanted Dominion in the past to prevent Maleficent from messing anything up. Instead, she was intercepted and trapped in Data-Enchanted Dominion until she went to that Daybreak Town and activated the ark to travel back to the real world, then her own time, which is how she was able to return in KH2.
Yes, the original Org. XIII exists, but this is specifically about the Real Organization. Yeah, I know Demyx and Vexen were reserves, but there are 13 people who are actually in it, so I didn’t count them when writing that option.
For those saying Quadratum is Unreality, it’s only Unreality to the Kh characters who were originally from the World of Kingdom Hearts. Plus it’s based on Shibuya (albeit a fictionalized version due to the inclusion of the 104 building) so I consider that our reality. Plus people literally doxxed Sora at one point and found the exact apartment he’s staying in, so…
In the ending of Union Cross, we learn that the Chirithys of the wielders who fell in the Keyblade War are keeping their hearts safe by consuming them and transforming into the Dream Eaters. Our player character elects to be reincarnated instead, which leads nicely into…
The fake answer. Contrary to popular belief, Xehanort is not Sora, nor the player character from Union Cross. In the ending of Dark Road, we learn that, because of his high empathy, he’s been basically reading the memories of his mentor (who is actually the player character), which causes him to remember things he likely wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. There is a time traveling Young Xehanort who inducts several members of the Real Org., though! And I love him oh so much
Yeah, the namesake of the series is indeed a big heart-shaped moon. Though I guess it was on the cover of the first game so that one shouldn’t have been to hard to figure out.
I saw several people say that there are other Replicas, and I knew that! Most of the Nort Court and various other members of the Real Org. had to be in order for them to even be in the present. However, I was talking about Chain of Memories Riku Replica specifically, and I did use the grammatical article ‘an’. I worded this very intentionally to say ‘exact’ Replica because, while Xion does talk about death, she’s not an exact Replica.
I’m grateful to say to the 12.2% of you who voted for this option that you do, in fact, get to beat up Peter Pan. Play Terra’s campaign in Birth by Sleep to do so.
Let’s see, there’s Sora, Roxas, Xion (who is a Replica of Sora’s memories of Kairi), Data-Sora, and Naminé (while she’s technically Kairi’s Nobody, she was created from Sora when he released their hearts from himself in KH1). I guess you can count Dream Sora, I don’t so that’s why I said 5 and not 6. I am also aware of the “Sora is the third reincarnation of the Player” theory, but until that’s confirmed or denied, it won’t be a seventh Sora (though that would be very poetic considering what Xehanort did and everything).
Saw this for other fandoms and wasn’t sure if there was a Kingdom Hearts one so…
Good luck!
