RFP Podcast Episode #280 – Ultra Dad Session #88: Do Scary S$%#!
Today’s episode fell into place nicely. I’ve been needing some change. I am speaking for Robin too since this is something we’ve been talking about for a long time. Full transparency – we’ve let our nutritional commitments lack over the last several months. Yeah – we’ve done our quarterly cleanses and did well with them but as soon as they were over, and this has felt like for 18 months, we’d go back to old behaviors. We’ve known what to do but our will, and our desire, weren’t strong enough to keep us on that track.
Well, when you make a commitment to do some scary shit – that tends to change behaviors……or it better 😊. Today we dig into that, and it is perfectly centered around this quote by David O. McKay below:
“The greatest battles of life are fought out in the silent chambers of the soul.”

Listen to the most recent episode of my podcast: RFP Podcast Episode #280 – Ultra Dad Session #88: Do Scary S%$&!
How’d we get here?
The Ultra Dad’s Podcast came from an idea Cindy Shane created. Well, she planted the idea in our head after listening to the first time Bryan was on the RFP Podcast in May 2020. There have many times over the years when we speak on the phone or in person the “we should be recording this” line comes out. Well, here we are jumping in with both feet, like we tend to do, sharing with you our perspectives on life. Let’s be candid – we are not perfect, and we fail often. Our favorite term to use is “it’s not ideal” and there have been countless times we’ve uttered, “a plan is great until you are punched in the face;” – but we do laugh a lot, at ourselves and/or each other mostly 😊. All that said, there are those brief moments where things tend to fall into place and we, somehow, make it to that finish line – as ultrarunners yes, but most importantly has husbands, fathers, friends, and human beings. We wanted to share those imperfections and those incredible moments that we’ve been fortunate enough to experience together over the last 30+ years. So, sit back, grab a cold one, and hopefully this will be another time where things fall into place.
Bryan & Mike

Keystone habits are those habits that have a positive impact on many aspects of your life. For example, if you have a habit of exercising regularly, it helps you enhance your physical look, make healthier eating choices, stay fresh, have lesser anxiety, and less stress. Though on the outside, exercising may seem a common habit like brushing teeth and flossing, its impact is felt directly on other parts of your life. This is why exercising is a keystone habit.

Getting this strong. Looking this good. Being this successful. It doesn't happen overnight. For anyone, or anything. Being able to execute and be effective is a process that takes time. Building habits is like building muscle. You start small with keystone habits. If you're new to working out, you have to start small, but that small thing will make a big difference as it evolves over time. It may be something that seems insignificant like making your bed, drinking a gallon of water, reading about your field for 30 minutes, or not taking the easiest walking route daily. Over time these habits become a part of you, and you can replace old bad habits with new ones. What habits are you ready to change? °°°°°°°°°°°° #mindset #habits #principles #keystonehabits #beeffective #strengthtraining #musclememory #startsmall #startwithwhy #takethestairs #itainteasy #repetition #mentalhealth #rootcause 📸: @studio_blanco_fotos and @pikx.niagara https://www.instagram.com/p/B-raD68jGfn/?igshid=e9do1vbfgkdb

How to Find Your Keystone Habits to Change Your Life Share When a young CEO stepped in at the helm of a dying giant, his first task was to figure out what needed to be done to save the company. After he spent some time researching the company and the market situation, he came up with a simple plan which he introduced to the shareholders in his first speech as the CEO. He spoke just about one single thing–safety. Everyone in the room thought he was crazy and some people jumped the soon-to-be-dead ship. 15 years later, he not salvaged the giant, but made it one of the strongest steel and metal companies in the world and made a global name of himself. The company is Alcoa and the guy was Paul O’Neill. But the story matters to us for one thing only and that is the relentless focus he had on safety and security in his company. Paul O’Neill said that his employees deserve to leave work the same way they arrived at it–unharmed. And it was this radical focus on a single habit in the company that made it great. A single focus on a single habit which had a massive ripple effect. This is known as a keystone habit. The Importance of a Keystone Habit A keystone habit is a habit which has the biggest ripple effect in your life which means that by implementing it, you will radically change everything in your life. It’s quite easy to spot the keystone habits which make your life miserable. https://www.lifehack.org/846364/keystone-habits . . . . . #keystone #keystonehabits #lifehacks #life https://www.instagram.com/p/B3xWyHegHTV/?igshid=1i94bee0xl3wy

DCB #1 - So, in the background I’ve been developing a Children’s Book for Designers. The intention behind this project is to help creative / ux types starting out in their corporate careers acquire skills that will help them navigate the uncertain waters of a large organization. So much of the job is not covered in school… and it is about how you manage your own life, relationships, health, emotions, and time. Hopefully these illustrated mantras will help your design practice and your quest to advance your influence at the workspace. #keystonehabits #comics #illustrations #design #tech #dontgobananas #careeradvice #careercoach #art #comicstrips #childrensbooks This first drop is about developing mindfulness of your finite units of engagement in order to happen to your day and not the other way around. https://www.instagram.com/p/CnL2AoULk6S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

These are called Keystone Habits. My personal Keystone habits are 1) Two shakes a day 2) High Intensity exercise and resistance training at least 3 times a week 3) Keeping my work and home schedule regular for my mal times 4) When the baby allows, good sleep. 6 - 8 hours #poweredbyherbalife #changinghabits #keystonehabits #info #learning #drdaveheber (at Brighton)

RFP Podcast Episode #9 – “What are you Keystone Habits?
As we move into the last few weeks of 2017 we start to begin looking at what we want to have as our New Year’s resolutions. We typically start off in January with great intentions but life tends to happen and get in the way and by mid-February those resolutions are no longer existing. A few years ago, we started shifting our focus on goals & resolutions to daily commitments and habits we can create. In this episode, we discuss “Keystone Habits” and what we can do to change our shoulds to musts and identify those commitments that create the necessary habits to make us better in 2018.

Taking Advantage of Keystone Habits
We all know what habits are, those things that we repeatedly do on a regular basis; those actions that we have repeatedly done with such frequency that they have become second nature to us. As English playwright John Dryden stated, "we first make our habits, and then our habits make us.”
Of course we all have our share of good habits, and certainly our share of bad habits. And for anyone out there who has ever tried to pick up a new habit or change an existing one, which is pretty much everyone, there is a firm understanding that habits are certainly hard to develop or break.
WE FIRST MAKE OUR HABITS, AND THEN OUR HABITS MAKE US. – John Dryden
But what exactly are keystone habits? First and foremost, the phrase “keystone habits” was made mainstream by Charles Duhigg in his New York Time’s Bestselling book The Power of Habit. Keystone habits are those habits that have a way of overflowing into multiple areas of your entire life. Rather than being a simple isolated habit, they are habits that can impact and influence your behavior and actions in a number of ways. As Duhigg himself puts it, “keystone habits influence how we work, eat, play, live, spend, and communicate, [and by changing them we] start a process that, over time, transforms everything.”
So what exactly are the characteristics of keystone habits?
Provide a series of small wins
People like feedback; we like to see little victories, they indicate that we are doing something right, and that we are on the right path. If we start something new but receive no feedback, we can quickly lose momentum and give up. Keystone habits provide this needed feedback.
An example of such a habit would be starting to exercise. Pretty quickly, new exercisers notice that the appearance of their body begins to change, their muscles start to show definition, and that number on the scale starts to fall. This feedback gives the individual a sense of accomplishment and a reason to continue on with this new habit.
Start a chain reaction
The main facet of keystone habits is that they start to influence the development of other habits, they are not just a single habit, acting alone, rather they are just a tipping point. Developing one keystone habit can begin a sort-of chain reaction that leads to the development of a multitude of habits. That is to say, they are just the beginning of a chain of events and behavioral changes that will come about by their implementation.
Let’s again return to the example of the individual beginning a habit of exercising. People who begin an exercise program, often begin to improve their eating patterns, they may ditch junk food in favor of fresh produce, perhaps go to sleep earlier in order to fit in that morning workout, and take overall better care of themselves. That’s one of the reasons exercise it such a powerful keystone habit to develop, it not only improves your health though increased activity levels, but it generally leads to improved health in many areas of your life. This one habit can spawn off multiple habits that can improve your life.
Serve as a launching pad
These keystone habits don’t just stop there, in fact, they have an even more powerful spill over affect in other areas of your life. They don’t just affect one area of your life; they can influence any number of areas of your life. That chain reaction of developing habits extends far beyond the boundaries of the category you initially started with.
Finally, one more time take that exerciser. So far there has been that improvement in health related habits, but typically that is just the beginning. With a firm grasp on her health, this exerciser has gained an increased sense of accomplishment. This allows her the confidence to try new tasks. Perhaps that is trying new activities, joining a new club, perhaps she now has the confidence to give public speaking a try, or to tackle that seemingly daunting task of organizing her finances.
Feeling accomplished in one area of your life, can give you that little push of extra courage you need to go after other major areas of interest in your life. It’s quite powerful that one change can ripple out and lead to any number of changes in your life.
WE ARE WHAT WE REPEATEDLY DO. EXCELLENCE, THEN, IS NOT AN ACT, BUT A HABIT. – Aristotle
So armed with the knowledge that keystone habits are so powerful, we should obviously be focusing our efforts on influencing them. As Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
How can you leverage these habits to improve your life? The key is to start small. Start with one habit. Trying to completely overhaul seventeen different areas of your life is way too daunting and is certain to lead initially to frustration, and ultimately failure. How frustrating would it be to make the decision to revamp all areas of your life in a 24 hour window?
We are creatures of habit. We can influence these habits, we can add new ones, take others away, but it is a process. It rarely (if ever) happens overnight. As leadership expert John C Maxwell said, “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret or your success is found in your daily routine.”
For something to become so ingrained in our being that it becomes second nature, be patient. It takes time. Don’t focus on all the changes you want to see, focus on one solitary habit, and the others will naturally and effortlessly roll in. Before you know it, you will have made more changes than you could have ever imagined. Just start with one habit, one day at a time.
YOU WILL NEVER CHANGE YOUR LIFE UNTIL YOU CHANGE SOMETHING YOU DO DAILY. THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS IS YOUR DAILY ROUTINE. – John C Maxwell
