The Merced River forms the center of the Yosemite Valley giving life through water to the lush green landscape we love so much here. This river collects the water from every single waterfall you see in the valley, accumulating snow melt from countless peaks. The spring thaw brings high waters which erode the banks as seen here just below the Happy Isles Bridge near the Mist Trail to Vernal Falls. These trees are barely hanging on and the roots of the one I was standing on were hanging several feet over the torrent. If you are camping in any of the Pines campgrounds you can follow a beautiful riverside trail up from the campgrounds all the way to this bridge and then on up to Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, Clark Point, Half Dome and beyond! Tag a friend who you'd take hiking along the Merced River! . P.s. a lot of you have asked me to see the shot of the two from the last photo getting doused by the waves. It was much colder and snowed every day but I think in some ways it was just as beautiful as the lush green summers that everyone loves up there. Mt Robson is the tallest Mountain in the Canadian Rocky Mountain range. It towers above the valley floor 9,281 feet bringing it's peak over 12k above sea level. This mountain is huge, one of the largest in prominence and magnificence ive ever seen. Probably the most famous hike in the park is Berg Lake where glaciers fall into a high alpine lake, breaking off in small icebergs. This however is a 44km round trip hike which I didn't have time to do in one day. Thus I made it half way to the valley of a thousand waterfalls. This view is of the beautiful blue glacier water flowing into the Kinney Lake from Berg Lake far up the mountains behind me. I didn't see the top of Mt Robson until much later in the day when the clouds finally broke. Fox Lake. Looks like a fox from this view point. Doesnt look like a fox at all from above. The lake is actually named after Bill Peyto who was an early trapper and trail guide in Banff. It's often considered the most beautiful blue lake in the Canadian Rockies. I like the milky blue look of the water from the nearby glacier silt that clouds the water. Definitely different than the deep clear blue of O'Hara and Moraine Lake. This is the same lake from the last photo except all the way down at ground level. To the right is the awesome viewpoint where I shot the previous photo and to my left is the prominent mountain on the right of the previous shot. Have I confused you yet? I hiked up the ridge on my left of and followed it around the entire lake up some intense hillls and over some rough pathways. I highly recommend doing the entire look if you have the energy and time. Met some awesome people while trekking here. Lake O'Hara is one of the most stunning hiking destinations in the Canadian Rockies. The park managers have decided to allow only a limited number of people up to the area per day to help preserve it's beauty and keep it from becoming the tourist trap that nearby Lake Louise has become. To get here one must reserve a spot on one of the several daily buses up the 11km road to the lodge. Reservations are taken exactly 3 months in advance and usually fill up on 20 minutes. Occasionally a lucky person or two can show up and take the spot of a customer who failed to arrive. I was not one such lucky hiker. Instead I walked the 11km road to get to the lodge and begin my day as there is no cap on walk-ins. Luckily the lodge has a coffee shop and after a nice break I was ready to being the real hiking. Be sure to bring cash as they do not except any payments by credit card. Standing at the end of the dock overlooking one of the Vermilion Lakes, surrounded by the hazy smoke of a thousand little sparks. Burning the undergrowth is an annual necessity to create new fresh trees. Let's just hope it hasn't gone to far this time. Exploring Banff is one my favorite pass times. This year, hundreds of wild fired have plagued British Columbia. It is thought that the unusual amount of snow this year led to record growth of the underbrush when the snow melted. This was followed by an incredibly dry summer creating ripe conditions for forest fires to spark without warning. Fire bans were in effect while I was in Alberta and British Columbia last week and the smoke on that first day there created almost dusk like conditions through out the day. This shot was taken at the Vermilion Lakes in Banff at about 4pm. Sunset over the Davenport Pier. The endless motion of the tides and the constant changing light from the slowly disappearing sun create boundless opportunity for new and delightful shots. Standing on this sea cliff, you can look down and see the results of the never ending pounding of the waves. Around me was a small forest and looking down your view was partially blocked by the exposed roots of trees. The eroding cliff face caused these roots to show themselves and would eventually bring the entire tree down to a watery grave. Life on earth is fragile and ever changing. Some people say that you can't see the milky way when the moon is out, especially if it is a full moon. It certainly isn't as crisp and clear but with a good lens, and nice camera, and a little luck one can still find our galaxy even when the landscape is being lit up like day by a bright moon. I got this shot at an undisclosed location near Mammoth Lakes California and can't wait to come back here to shoot the Milky Way again when the moon isn't so bright and the stars can shine to their full potential.
