WIP Wednesday (5/8) | Mafia Front Restaurant AU (Part 154)
After playing a few hands, Kevin tasks himself with counting up their points on an order pad Jean had scrounged up from a random drawer. It must be ancient with the way it’s yellowed, but it works just fine regardless. When he finishes adding, Kevin finds a large gap between their scores. He raises his head to look at Jean, who’s gathering up the cards to shuffle them once again.
He must feel Kevin’s eyes on him, because he looks up with a cocked brow. “What is it?”
“Are you letting me win?”
Jean’s lips twitch. “What?”
“Are you throwing points? Because I promise I don’t need you to.”
“Mon cher, I would never throw a game of anything. Especially not against you,” Jean says, cutting the deck.
“Never?”
“No. I like winning too much to coddle anyone. Even you.”
“Mm,” Kevin says, sliding the notepad out of the way. “But you’re trailing by sixty-five points already.”
“Am I?” Jean asks, not surprised.
“Yes.” Kevin confirms after checking his mental math. “Sixty-five points behind, but you always beat Neil. It just makes it feel like you’re doing it on purpose.”
Jean chuckles. “First of all, you caught me with a handful in the first round which started me in a deficit. Secondly, Neil spends more time trying to cheat than he does actually playing the game. You know him. Tiny, devious, averse to playing fair.”
There are a few other adjectives Kevin could add to that list, but instead he just nods along with Jean’s description which also fits himself. Except for 'tiny', of course. Jean is taller than both of them and they each tower over Neil—
“Wait a second…” Kevin starts, laughing a bit. “Wait, wait, wait. You’re tall enough to see into Neil’s hand from across the table. Aren’t you?”
Jean’s eyes widen a bit at Kevin’s detective work, then he smirks. “Sometimes.”
Kevin tuts, “Seems you’re both averse to playing fair.”
“Perhaps. But don’t tell Neil.” Jean says as he finishes dealing. “I like annoying him.”
“Play like you mean it and I won’t say a word.”
