Favorites : Pineapple Express (2008)
Tumblr media
Any chance I get to support the wonderful crew that emerged from the wake of Freaks and Geeks, I do so, as their product is consistently high quality and hilarious.  Of the many, many talented people that came out of that project, two of the most successful were Seth Rogan and James Franco, who have continued to explore their wonderful chemistry through several film ventures.  Before they caused an epic, multi-country scandal via The Interview, the duo created a cult classic for stoners and fans of comedy in the form of Pineapple Express.
After a stressful day of serving subpoenas, followed by an argument with his 18 year old girlfriend Angie (Amber Heard), process server Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) visits his drug dealer Saul (James Franco) for some green relief.  Saul not only gives Dale a pep-talk, but he sells him a rare strain of weed known as Pineapple Express, a strain that he has exclusive selling rights to.  After Dale escapes Saul’s residence and attempts at friendship, he attempts to serve a man named Ted Jones (Gary Cole).  Dale’s visit, however, turns him into the witness of a murder committed by Ted Jones and Officer Carol Brazier (Rosie Perez), and in his fear-filled attempt to flee the scene, Dale leaves behind a joint of Pineapple Express and is spotted.  Unsure of what to do, Dale flees to Saul for help, but they quickly realize that his connection to Pineapple Express and Ted Jones puts him in the same danger that Dale faces.  With no plan and little hopes of surviving, the duo enlists the help of Red (Danny McBride) in hopes of bargaining for Dale’s safety, but the situation quickly spirals epically out of control.
The brilliance of Pineapple Express is the way that it melds a handful of genres together into one cohesive, albeit outrageous, narrative.  The most obvious comparison is the realm of stoner comedy, immediately putting the movie in the same realm of classics like the Cheech & Chong or Jay & Silent Bob movies.  The road movie feeling of a Thelma & Louise or Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is also there, giving the film its feeling of adventure.  The adventure aspect is multiplied by the action movie aspects of the film, with the underground bunker location, hired muscle, gang war, fight scenes and chase scenes feel like a skewed version of the Bourne series, or a counter-culture Die Hard-style film.  All of this is presented, and it’s wrapped up nice and neatly into the world of a line-o-rama comedy, a style that this generation of comedic actors and directors have perfected.
The chemistry between every actor and the fusion that carries between scenes makes this one of the most enjoyable and rewatchable movies I can think of.  Be it Dale and Saul, Ted Jones and Officer Carol, Budlofsky and Matheson, Red and anyone he is paired with, or the handful of interactions that Dale and Saul have with everyone they meet, there is never a dull or wasted moment.  The entirety of the cast also finds the most amazing ways to take common action/adventure tropes and drown them in hilariousness and ridiculousness... never have I seen a funnier collection of shootouts, car chases, torture scenes and explosions.  They even manage to find humor in the very delicate situation that is Dale and Angie’s relationship, which while legal and consensual, is certainly enough of a gap that it would probably raise eyebrows and generate clickbait articles aplenty these days.
In terms of technical aspects, this film shines in areas that it has no obligations to, or even reasons to excel in.  The story has enough twists and turns to continuously propel itself forward, keeping the viewers hooked despite the story’s premise being relatively simple.  The soundtrack is stellar, mixing old, new, popular and obscure songs that perfectly punctuate the moments they are connected to.  The costuming has a nice, vintage, lived-in look, with even the most styled characters like Ted Jones still wearing outfits that a blue-collar individual could easily afford and wear with confidence.  Even the prelude scene, while being amazingly hilarious, ties right back into the end of the film without being obnoxious or obvious about it.
Seth Rogan is one of the most relatable, human protagonists to date, eschewing the invincible trope for a hapless everyman approach that serves as an immediate viewer surrogate.  James Franco neatly falls into an interesting anti-hero role, bouncing between sympathetic victim and vindictive accomplice, all the while trying to force a friendship out of a business connection.  Danny McBride completes this trio by bringing the pure wild card energy only he is capable of.  Gary Cole and Rosie Perez have a wonderful will they/won’t they dynamic that they tie into their top dog irreverence, while Kevin Corrigan and Craig Robinson embrace the Odd Couple, arguing siblings aesthetic to great effect.  Amber Heard brings a different realm of humor into the world of the Dale Denton character, with great support from the Ed Begley Jr. and Nora Dunn appearances.  The list of cameo and brief appearances is wonderful as well, with names like Joe Lo Truglio, Bill Hader, James Remar, Ken Jeong, Cleo King, Justin Long and more contributing their talents.
For what it’s worth, I feel that Pineapple Express definitely deserves a spot on any list of notable movies from the 2000s.  The comedic precedent it set has been mirrored time and time again, and it not only solidified Seth Rogan and James Franco as leaders of the new school, but instantly validated Danny McBride as comic seasoning for any funny project.  I’m not sure if any movie is ‘perfect’, but for someone like me, Pineapple Express flies close to that sun in all the best ways.

My MCM aka Movie Crush Monday is one of the funniest films of my generation SUPERBAD. In my opinion the character McLovin stole the show, never laughed so hard.

Together with their nerdy friend, they spend a long day trying to score enough alcohol to supply the party and inebriate two girls in order to kick-start their sex lives before they go off to college.
