Priya was trying to capture something sublime. And her failure was slowly driving her mad. 

“How dare you make eye contact with me, Fabian. You’re supposed to be the shy one! And you! Marco! I need to feel more rebellion from you!” Priya’s eyes flicked wildly between the dancers. “Can someone tell me why no one is wearing their denim fedoras?” Sergio pushed off the ballet bar with a suddenly strengthened resolve. They didn’t need wardrobe gimmicks. They had his talent. He’d toured as a backup dancer for Kevin Federline, god damn it. He would help Priya capture her vision. All he needed was a chance to talk to her, alone.

Priya sat in the centre of her makeshift shrine, cradling an ancient CD Player. Her eyes were closed in benediction, the lyrics on her lips a prayer.

“Take a space ride with a cowboy, baby—” A strangled noise escaped Sergio’s lips and Priya’s eyes flashed open. In an instant, she was on him.

Today I’m doing something I haven’t done yet, which is put a spotlight on an entire album. Today, October 25, 2017, marks the 10th anniversary of Britney Spears’ 6th LP, Blackout. Ten years after its release, it is still considered by Britney fans and many others to be her greatest feat in the recording studio. The first thing we hear on the album is the now iconic, “It’s Britney, bitch.” The sound on this album is an entirely different Britney than we had ever heard before - it was dark, gritty, raw, and completely innovative in regards to pop music. It is the first and only Executive Producer credit Britney has had on an album. One of the most interesting things about Britney’s most critically-acclaimed album is that just 9 months prior to its release, she infamously shaved her head publicly in a salon in Los Angeles, California.

After releasing her fourth LP, In the Zone, Britney began working on her own project. This album became known as Original Doll and is the most heart-wrenching point for every Britney Spears, with the exception of February 2007. More will be told about Original Doll in time, but the men suits took control and completely scrapped the project and most of the tracks lie on a hard drive somewhere out there. Britney began the project because she wanted to take control of her life, having had to answer to her parents, management, and record label since the age of 15. While Blackout was being recorded in 2007, Britney was struggling with her relationship with her parents and she had fired her manager, Larry Rudolph; she was at the helm.

The album’s first track, “Gimme More,” has become one of Britney’s most popular songs. It is the birth of what has become Britney’s catchphrase: “It’s Britney, bitch!” The phrase was not an original “lyric” for the song, but was improvised by Britney and producer, Danja. Not only is the lyric iconic, but the fact that it is the first thing you hear on the album, the album released just months after Spears shaved her head and was dealing with the media at every step, makes it so much more iconic. Even though promotion for the album would become practically non-existent, it was Britney’s way of saying, “I’m back, I’m ‘fine’, and I’m taking names.”

The song is most infamous for it’s music video and rumors surrounding it. There is a second edition of the video in which Britney appears to dance topless. It’s even more infamous for her performance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.

For me, I received the album as a Christmas gift from my friend for my high school show choir’s Secret Santa. As I am typing this, I cannot believe I remember and can picture this...the rules of Secret Santa were that for the three Fridays before break, you had to get you gift to your person by any means necessary (hand it off to someone, put it in/on their locker, etc.) and then in the afternoon during class (yes, show choir is a class at my high school), you presented your gift to everyone. Well, I received the gift and was leaving school to volunteer at one of the elementary schools for National Honor Society. I went with a friend and I put the CD in and we listened as we drove; my first time hearing other songs that weren’t “Gimme More.” Come to find out a week or two later, that friend with me was my Secret Santa!

I remember watching the VMA performance and not really thinking anything. My girlfriend (lol) called me immediately after criticizing it and I still defended Britney. Watching it now, yes, you can see that it wasn't right; something was off and it’s hard for me to watch. More on this performance later. :)

The album is obviously a favorite, being one of two albums that I can listen from beginning to end on its own. I truly think it is absolutely genius.

The second track, “Piece of Me,” has garnered just as much fame as its predecessor, except, instead of infamy, it’s fame. The song and video is truly Britney’s middle finger to everyone...

The video earned Britney her first MTV Video Music Award at the 2008 ceremony. The beginning of the comeback, she took home all three categories she was nominated in: Best Pop Video, Best Female Video, and the award of the night, Video of the Year, receiving a standing ovation every time her name was announced. The title of the song was also used as the title of her four-year Las Vegas residency, Britney: Piece of Me. Again, SO much more to tell about this song and video, but we’ll save it for its own post. ;)

The third track and final single from the album, “Break the Ice,” had the strangest promotion of any song ever released by the Princess of Pop. I recall something about going to Britney’s website and there was an oddly worded invitation to the Blackout Ball...I think??? You had to enter your email address and it would eventually send you a link to watch the new video. Again...????? I think? Regardless, the video ended up being anime. Yes, simply a cartoon set to the song. Based on the timing and what was going on in Britney’s personal life, it was clear that all promotion for Blackout had come to an end; the song was contracted to be released as a single and they had to come up with a video. This was 2008, the song was not performed live until 2013 in the Vegas show. This would also not be the last time Britney’s personal life clashed with contractual agreements.

Going into just some quick thoughts and facts...

One of the best songs on the album is “Why Should I Be Sad,” which is clearly about the rocky relationship with Britney’s ex-husband, Kevin Federline.

The best irony of this album is that is the only album of Britney’s to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library & Archives because of it’s influence on pop music.

It was voted the seventh-best album of the 2000′s by Rolling Stone.

Jessica Letkemann of Billboard compared the sales favorably to those of the number-one album of the previous week, Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride, which sold 49,000 copies. This may be my favorite one so far. The image of Priya cradling the CD player was priceless. And Sergio as a backup singer for Kevin Federline?!?! That’s not something I’m sure I’d go around bragging about! Loved this one!
