Kershaw Emerson: A great beginner knife, but also has the Emerson Wave opening assist. You can pull this right out of your pocket and it flips open on it’s own. Great value for a knife that is nearly a switchblade. Decent color selection. Made in China Blade 3.5in. 6.4 oz. $42

Kershaw Chive: Excellent beginner knife, especially for women. Assisted opening and small enough to fit in those tiny ass pockets women’s jeans have. They come in a ton of colors, but the pink is the best, has a great feel. Also would look cute cutting open a letter or stabbing a rapist in the neck. 420 high-carbon steel. Easy to sharpen, and resistant to corrosion and stain, doesn’t rust easily. Made in USA. Blade 1.9in. 2.24 oz. $42

Spyderco Ladybug 3: Great overall knife. Stepping into a high quality steel, you’re basically paying for the blade as the handle, fiberglass reinforced nylon, is very light, yet strong and has a great grip.Japan steel. Sharp af right out the box. VG-10 high quality steel, more susceptible to rust, but barely, one of the better steels for pocket knives. Doesn;t come with a clip, but has a hole for a lanyard. Lots of colors. There are better Spyderco options imo. 4.4 in length. Blade 1.9in. .63 oz. $42

Kershaw Scallion: Kershaw make some of the best knives under $50. Has a large pocket clip, and a lock assist. Made in USA. Slim, sleek, and smooth. Feels great in the hand. Smooth SpeedSafe opening, flipper adds finger protection for extra grip when you’re digging or cutting into things, great for left or right handed folk. 420HC Steel. 3.5 in length. Blade 2.4in. 2.4oz. $46

Kershaw Leek: Similar to the Scallion. Slightly longer and slimmer blade. Lots more colors options. Sandvik 14C28N steel blade. Decent quality blade with a good quality for price value. Reversible carry clip. Glassbreaker tip for emergencies. Speedsafe assisted opening.Made in USA. 4in. length. Blade 3in. 3oz. $49

Spyderco Tenacious: One of my first knives I’ve owned and carried daily for years. I still wear it after years of ownership. Incredibly smooth opening, especially once you get used to the Spyderco round hole. I love sitting there and just opening it with the “Spider-man” style flip. 4-position pocket clip for tip up or down carry. Liner lock. Medium sized knife with a decent heft to it. Great G-10 handle that gives a good grip yet feels smooth. 8Cr13MoV stainless blade. Easy to sharpen, yet holds a sharp hard edge. Ribbed spine for slip-proof thumb positioning. Made in China, Taiwan, but a high quality value folder. Sharp af out the box, but will need to be broken in a bit with the opening. 3.39in Blade. 8oz. $54

Case XX WR Gentleman’s knife: Great little pocket blade. I personally own one with the pearl handle and usually just throw it in the bag as a backup. Wanna look cool and hip af while slicing an apple? This is the knife for you. This specific knife has an incredibly handle color, but search around for a color that matches your taste. These are high quality knives Made in the USA, and can get quite pricey.6254 Stainless Steel, which is Case’s own brand of steel, it is essentially 420HC, but has a beautiful stainless shine.SHARP AF. 4.2in. 3.52oz $55. Sweet leather belt sheath. $25

Kershaw Blur: Beautiful knife. Highly recommend, I personally don’t own but many friends swear by it. Has a great hand feel, grip, and weight and balance. Stepping into the best value for your dollar with a solid ass knife. Speedsafe assist. Trac-Tec grip makes it great for any condition whether it be water, snow, mud, or sand.  14C28N steel. Has a DLC, diamond like coating, on the blade, making it even more resistant to corrosion and staining, while still giving a nice chine. Lightweight yet strong aluminum handle. I recommend the half plain and serrated edge. 3.4in blade. 4.2oz. $64

Spyderco Delica 4: My current EDC. Multiple colors, great steel, lightweight handle. Incredibly lightweight knife. VG-10 japanese steel corrosion resistant, but not rust resistant so be careful with water. The fiberglass reinforced nylon , FRN, handle has incredible grip.Back lock and a trademark hole in the blade for reduced weight, yet still remains strong and sturdy. “Ribbed spine for her pleasure, ewwwww”  (Waynes World) it gives better thumb to spine contact so your thumb wont slip when you’re digging in or stabbing something. There is an Emerson Wave version with that out of pocket quick draw that I will be purchasing next. I own the orange handle, it makes it easy to see, and fits with my style and outfits. 4.25 inch handle. 2.75in blade. 2.5oz.$85

Spyderco Endura Damascus: I want this fucking badly. Damascus steel is one of the highest quality steels on the planet next to blue steel. This steel was made into weapons at a point and superior to iron.It has a beautiful water like pattern on it. FRN handle. The Endura is a quality Spyderco knife, but the steel on this one make it that much better. It is a mix between Damascus and VG-10.  Length: 4.98. Blade  3.80in.  3.40oz $100

Benchmade Mini Griptilian: Highest quality knife, of course, with the highest price point. Made in Oregon.These knives are made to perfection, and Benchmade has a reputable name throughout the knife world. This is their cheapest knife, but they do not skimp on quality. Multiple colors and edges. Manual opening. USA 154CM SS, not as nice as Spyderco VG-10, but still incredible steel with edge retention. Great for cutting through bigger items, such as thick rope, car seat belt, etc. Incredible weight and balance with this knife. Great for those who work in a field that requires some rough and repeated use. *wink wink*. Also one of the better knives to bring with you camping or hiking, as it can cut and saw, if you get serrated, through almost anything. This thing is sturdy and sharp as shit. It feels great in the hand and becomes an extension of your body. Axis lock to ensure handling safety, textured lightweight yet strong grip. 3.9in. length. 2.9in Blade. 2.9oz. $110

I highly recommend keeping a pocket knife on you at all times.

Obviously some bit of a protection is what accompanied it. But it also helps when you need to cut into something, slice something, rip open a package, cut some rope.

Also, having a knife on your person also give you a bit of self confidence. What I mean by that is you feel just that much more safe, granted many pocket knives are only a few inches long, it can easily thwart off an attacker, or save you from being jumped by multiple people as I know of people who have saved themselves from that exact circumstance.

“Xavier, you don’t know what you’re asking.”

“Sure I do,” he waved a blasé hand between you and gestured back to the weapon, shining cold and bitter in his eager palm. “I’m asking the love of my life to end my life.”

Wouldn't it be good if we could live without a care?

Folding your arms in frustration and a demonstration of your intent, you frowned hard. “I’m not killing you and that’s final.”

“Oh come on,” he chuckled lightly, almost cheerful in the deep discourse between you. “It’s not that hard, you killed Chet yesterday for stealing your last Pop Tart!”

You must be joking, you don't know a thing about it

“That... that was different! He had it coming long before the goddamn Pop Tart!”

Xavier leaned in to close the tense space between you, raising a hand to brush aside your hair and cup your cheek. He knew your objections were fragile, he knew your debate was futile, so he began the softly-softly approach.

You've got no problem, I’d stay right there if I were you

“Baby girl, I’m the only one here that isn’t dead yet.” His gaze burned into yours with an intensity he rarely let anybody see from him, his macho exterior cast aside for this moment. “Don’t ask me how or why but nobody’s bumped me off yet. I need you to do this for me because nobody else here will.”

“I made everybody promise not to kill you,” you confessed with a sigh, carding a stressed hand through your hair. “You have a life outside of this camp, you’re the only one who has something to go back to out in the real world.”

I got it harder, you couldn't dream how hard I got it

Xavier lunged forward, a curious line forming in his forehead. “I’ve got a life? Since when? What have I honestly got ‘to go back to out in the real world?!’ Last I checked, I’ve got a sketchy porn tape and a long list of failed auditions for parts I’ll never make because I’m just not good enough.”

“Let me get this straight, you want to give up your entire career for wandering this damp, dark shithole with no aim, no purpose except to dodge the Lady In White for all eternity?”

You could’ve sworn Xavier rolled his eyes beneath his prominent brows. “That’s exactly what I want, because if all that wandering means I get to hold your hand,” Xavier trailed off while reaching to clasp your hand with his, his thumb brushing with intent over the back of your fingers. “Then it’s worth missing out on life outside Camp Redwood.��

The heat is stifling, burning me up from the inside

“I... I can’t ask you to give up your life for me, to never get a chance to work again,” you attempted to conclude the issue, knowing full well he would not relent no matter what moral ultimatum you retaliated with. “I don’t want you to be stuck here forever just because of some girl.”

The sweat is coming through each and every pore

Xavier’s breaths stalled in his throat, his gaze hardened on your eyes and he released your hand to drop with a thud against the sheets.

“That’s what you think you are to me? Some girl?”

“No, no of course not, I—…”

Before you could defend yourself, Xavier tossed the sheets covering him to one side, grabbed his white pants and yanked them on, still gripping the shimmering blade in his hand. As he rushed to the cabin door, stumbling on the fabric wrapped around his feet, you followed suit and grasped your own clothes.

“Xavier, wait—!”

No response came amidst the shuffling of leather as he shrugged on his lavender jacket and swung the door open. Chucking your dress on over your head and bundling out of the door behind him, barefoot onto the dirt track beyond the cabin.

Wouldn't it be good to be in your shoes, even if it was for just one day?

“Xavier!” You called helplessly into the dark, your lover’s pastel form fading into the pitch black forest ahead. “Xavier, I didn’t mean it, please!”

His figure hurried into the wilderness, disappearing from your sight aided by the brimming of searing hot tears. You stalled, frozen to the spot, breaths shallow and frantic that blocked out the silence of the woods surrounding you.

Wouldn't it be good if we could wish ourselves away?

“Please don’t do anything stupid, Xav,” you cried out into the darkness, tugging lengths of your hair in desperation. “I love you, you bleach blonde idiot!”

“Wanting to be with someone you love is never stupid,” his voice called out from close behind you, making you spin on your heels until your face met his, noses a mere inch apart. “Especially if they’re a bleach blonde idiot.”

Sharing a coy smile, you barely noticed his hand take yours, silently guiding your fingers to wrap around a familiar cool metal handle. The instant the cold sensation numbed your palm, your brimming tears burst their banks.

“On three, okay?” Xavier instructed calmly, almost too calmly, curling his lips into a comforting grin as you agreed without words.

“One,” Xavier declared, nodding encouragingly as you gripped the blade’s shank. “T… two,” his confident voice faltered. “Three.”

With his last word, he clasped his digits over yours and thrust the blade into his abdomen. Suppressing a pained gasp, he forced a smile and hooked his free hand around your neck, pulling you in for one last kiss.

I got it bad, you don't know how bad I got it

“I… I love you,” he whispered into your mouth, interrupted by strangled gurgles as his lips weakened against yours. “See... see you in a moment.”

Suddenly his weight dropped against your chest, pulling you to the floor as you held him in your arms. The blood from his abdomen poured so violently against you, your dress clung to your skin and sent freezing shivers through you.

You got it easy, you don't know when you've got it good

“Xav,” you cried at the lifeless body in your lap, frantic tears dripping on Xavier’s jacket beneath you. “Xav, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” Xavier’s voice husked behind you, more clear and confident than ever. “This is all I’ve ever wanted.”

It's getting harder, just keeping life and soul together

Turning your head sharply, your gaze fell on a bright-eyed, healthy version of Xavier, smiling from ear to ear behind you. You snapped back to look at his body in your arms but his weight was gone, your lap empty even of the blood soaking your dress.

Xavier extended a hand to lift you to your feet, this time you dropped lifeless against his chest, relieved that his strength prevented you from falling to the forest floor.

I'm sick of fighting even though I know I should

“Easy, I’ve got you,” his reassuring tone poured like honey into your ear between the thunderous pounding of your pulse drowning him out. “I’ve got you forever, baby.”

“H...,” you stuttered, straining to stand up straight. “How are you feeling?”

His signature grin beamed back at you, tightening his arms around you.

“It’s not bad,” he sighed wistfully. “I could murder some cotton candy.”

Falling In Love With A Coke Dealer

I was visiting my friend Zach one day. The house was empty, whoever had been living there had moved out and Zach was squatting in one of the bedrooms while he repaired some things around the house. I was walking through the house when the door suddenly swung open and a mail courier walked through the door and dumped ten pounds of marijuana on the floor. I stood there, surprised at the absurdity of what I was witnessing. I had never seen this man before and he walked into the house confident in what he was doing. The moment where we initially looked at each other is seared into my mind. He looked at me strangely and I’m sure I looked back with a quizzical look. This man turned out to be Zach’s younger brother, Ben. We introduced ourselves and I thought nothing more of the interaction.

Eventually, my friend invited me to go to his brother's house so I tagged along. I felt a bit anxious as I normally do whenever meeting new people and going to new places. I had no idea what I was about to walk into. Zach had talked about his brother a few times but I was never too interested in knowing more. Prior to meeting Ben, my friend mentioned that he had gone to prison for selling drugs and that he was falling back into that lifestyle. I either said something to try to empathize with my friend or I called his brother a dumbass, I can’t remember which it was.

I followed Zach as he led me into the backyard and into the garage of Ben’s house. My hands were sweating and I was unsure of myself but none of this was new. I’m constantly aware of the anxiety that follows me. I really didn’t expect to see what I saw when I walked into that house. There were two men in the garage and I introduced myself to them. Ben led us to his room upstairs to show us something that immediately reminded me of danger I had faced in the past. The bed was covered in guns. I was pretty comfortable around guns but it quickly became clear that these were the kind of guns that weren’t traceable. Or even remotely legal. All I saw were felony charges spread out in front of me. I could feel the danger just by being in that room but this situation wasn’t completely bizarre to me.

I never could figure out why but when Ben spoke, I wanted to listen. He could captivate me with the way he could command the attention of the room. He was exceptionally funny and was the only person I had met in a long time that caught my taunting giggles and sly smack talking. I immediately felt fond of him and wanted to be his friend but I didn’t want to be a weirdo. I also made note that he was living with another woman when I had visited and I respected that. I tried to get to know her, I even bought one of her paintings but she remained standoffish.

We quickly started to date each other. He made me feel excited and energetic, or maybe that was the cocaine. One day, I asked Ben to sell me some weed he had in a giant glass jar and we exchanged phone numbers so I could Zelle him some cash. He gave me a generous amount of weed without weighing it. When I got home we started texting each other. I don’t know what insanity possessed me to go anywhere with this strange man but the next day we went camping and ate shrooms. I had never been camping before but I was open-minded. I was initially wary of this man but part of me trusted him because Zach had never said anything negative about his character and I knew my friend was an amazing person. Part of me knew I was crazy for even thinking about getting into the same car with a felon I didn’t know but I remained compelled. I had my little Kershaw knife clipped to the side of my pocket because I didn’t trust him. He brought along his huge dog who kept trying to push me off my seat.

The ride to the camping spot felt a bit awkward. I didn’t quite know what to say but I chattered away anyway. I didn’t trust this man's intentions and I had no reason to, I didn’t know him. In my experience with men they tend to be creepy so I was concerned he would try to do something to me. I touched the safely secured knife in my pocket and reminded myself of reality again, I trusted that Zach would never let me meet someone who could hurt me. I rolled a blunt and got it all over myself and Ben’s car but he didn’t seem to mind. If he did, he was very nice about it. He had an easy going attitude but we kept looking at each other strangely. I tried to play it cool and pretend that I couldn’t see him watching me periodically from the corner of my eye. But I stayed aware of how often he would look over at me.

Being with Ben felt like a whirlwind of emotion and excitement. I’d been spoiled all my life but never to this extent. I didn’t expect or ask for anything from him but he was filled with pleasant surprises. Material things are nice but they aren’t everything. What really got me to fall in love with this man was how genuine he felt and the purity of his soul. But who doesn’t want to feel valued and spoiled? Maybe I was falling easily into his trap but at the same time, I didn’t care. In my heart, I believed he wouldn’t let anything happen to me. One week he ordered me a beautiful bouquet of roses from Ecuador, another week it was geometrical canvases painted by a talented artist, and one day he took me to pick up my puppy. He paid for my standard

poodle in cash and I brought him home. I contemplated that maybe my parents had fucked up raising me because all these grand gestures really caught my attention.

This man was covered in more red flags than I could count but as the meme goes, it looked like a carnival to me. He still lived with his ex-girlfriend and her kids, he was a felon, he had just lost his job at the courier service because of his alcoholism, he was a cocaine dealer with tons of different drugs that were easily accessible and he handled illegal firearms. Logically, this was far from the ideal situation I had imagined for myself but he was persistently charming, he listened to my leftist theory and he never tried to change my beliefs albeit he would help me look at them from a different point of view.

He might’ve been covered in red flags but he was always soft and kind when he spoke to me. We didn’t argue over what was right or wrong, we respected each other’s views on life even if we were compelled to challenge those perspectives. This relationship taught me many things. It expanded my worldview. I started to respect differences I didn’t think I could validate before. I knew I could be a bit extreme with the theories I agreed with and this relationship helped me notice where I didn’t agree with my own theory thus balancing out what was rational and what was too idealistic.

The availability of cocaine seemed endless. This is how I ended up using cocaine for three months straight until I finally stopped. Having been addicted to heroin and meth before, I drastically underestimated what cocaine could do to me. I didn’t consider it as “hard” of a drug as the ones I’d been addicted to but I quickly learned I was wrong. I couldn’t figure out how to get away from doing coke without getting away from him. I had grown to love Ben but I knew being near him was damaging my health so I checked into a treatment center to get a grip on myself and my sobriety. I swore to myself I wouldn’t make the same mistakes again. I would give up coke like I gave up heroin and meth because the damage it had done was severe. I lost 30 pounds within three months. The drugs combined with my eating disorder made it apparent that I wasn’t okay.

The fire inside me could never be quelled. I knew I deserved to be sober and I would do anything to achieve the mental wellness I had worked so hard to acquire. Ben stayed supportive of me entering treatment and quitting cocaine. Our relationship had suddenly started to get rocky as I became more unstable. It seemed like our happy days were behind us and our arguing seemed incessant. I knew I needed to do something drastic, so I did. Quitting cocaine seemed difficult at first but it got easier after a couple days. I knew I had to say goodbye to cocaine and I could never use it again. At first this realization bummed me out but what did I get out of it anyways? I knew this would only lead me to worse things and eventually, it did. My resolve never changed and I held onto the idea that “my high is my sobriety” as 347aidan’s song “MEMORIES!” goes.

Today I find myself sober again. I won’t let what I’ve gone through those months be in vain. I learned some very important lessons through relapsing on cocaine and other drugs, I realized how much I love being in a sober state of mind. Mind you, I don’t subscribe to the “abstinence only” approach either. I think we need to adopt a harm reduction mindset to really be of service to people in need. The abstinence only approach leaves a lot of people on the wayside and it proves to not be as effective as maintenance therapy. We shouldn’t exclude someone from getting help because of how they chose to cope with their lives and circumstances. For myself, being “sober” looks like using marijuana and psychedelics in a balanced way and taking my prescribed medication. Early in my sobriety I found a lot of success while being prescribed Suboxone. So fuck what your local Alcoholic’s Anonymous group says but read The Big Book anyways. Take what applies to you and leave the rest.

I fell in love with a coke dealer and I really don’t regret any of it. He gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams and he believed in me. He would give me books on neuroscience or books about god because he knew I was having a difficult time finding my own spirituality. He never tried to convince me of anything, he just held my hand while I searched for my own answers. For obvious reasons it didn’t work out in the end but I’ll always deeply love Ben. I’m glad to be away from him and those bricks of cocaine. I’m never going back to that. I just want to be healthy again and I'll do anything to preserve that. I’m glad I could be brave enough to tackle my new addiction even if it meant letting him go.

TSA confiscation grab bag score: I’ve been needing a camp/EDC blade for this trip but Santa Fe is oddly lacking in knife stores (there’s one and REI, both overpriced). I looked up ‘surplus’ and turned out it’s once a month- today. I didn’t get there early enough to score the 4(!) Benchmade knives for $20 each, but I did get two grab bags totally $40 and got 7 great knives, a smattering of useful but not great stuff (including many tiny Swiss Army Knives), and a metric ton of corkscrews and mall-ninja type junk.
