💍 + Ian!
HEADCANONS MEME: WEDDING EDITION!!
send me 💍 + A SHIP and i’ll tell you—
Found here:x    ||   Accepting
@mentorxfather
where they get married In Ireland for sure, in a nice venue by the see, maybe even on a cliff. like in the movies.
when they get married ( ie what time of day, what month and season etc. ) A spring wedding, so there’ll be lots of flowers, at noon, so it’ll be sunny but they’ll have a nice breeze.
what traditions they include ( do they get married under a chuppah and crush a glass, garter toss, ‘something borrowed, something blue,’ etc. ) Nothing too traditional, but how about a the age-old tradition of handfasting? (having their hands tied together with braid, or something similar).
what their wedding cake looks like Easy - looks traditionally white but is three layers, each different flavor, tons of gummy bears on top and fifteen ice cream flavors.
….who smashes cake into whose face Clair into Ian’s because she’s the playful one and I swear I’m crying thinking about it XD
who proposed to who first Oh. I think Ian would break first.
who walks down the aisle and who waits at the altar ( or neither ) Ha. Well, considering Ian’s record. Maybe Clair would be scared to walk down the aisle. But she’ll do it anyways, trusting him to wait for her at the alter.
what their wedding dresses / suits / other look like He will wear a classic black tux, because he’s a classy guy. With a lily in his pocket that matches the lilies in Clair’s hair. (Maybe even the Kerry Lily?). And Clair would have a retro 1920′ish inspired dress like this, but with the lilies in her hair.
what their wedding colour scheme is and what sort of decor they have They’ll keep it simple, white and minor touches of yellow since it’s her favorite color.
what flowers are in the bouquet ( if applicable. bonus: what do the flowers mean? ) Oh lol, the Kerry lily and maybe some Calla lilies?
what their vows are ( eg poetry, traditional, improvised etc. ) Not sure about Ian’s maybe he’s best improvising, but Clair would stay up all night rewriting her vows and eventually speaking from the heart; how his hair is glamorous and how she loves him til her heart aches.
if anyone’s late to the wedding I don’t even know who’s invited XD neighbors? Hospital friends? Possibly Clair’s family.
who’s in the bridal parties / groomsmen / other That is a wonderful question. XD I’m sure they each can dig up a couple of buddies.
what their bridal party / groomsmen / other are wearing Whatever they’ll like, they’re not gonna be picky on it.
who gives speeches at the reception ( bonus: what do they say? recount a sweet memory or two between them? tell an embarrassing story? ) No speeches.
who catches the bouquet( s ) A nurse from the hospital who’s desperate in getting a man because lols.
what their wedding photos are like ( are they sweet, with the couple holding hands or kissing or ~gazing into each others eyes~? are they silly, with a snapshot of the ‘cake-smash’ moment? or are they artistic, with one of them facing the sunset or holding their bouquets? ) Sweet, pure, moments when they’re not even looking at the camera, but are so consumed by the moments. looking into each other eyes or laughing quietly and looking down... jsdfhgkjhfgk
what sort of food they have at the reception ugh, classy finger food?
who cries first during the ceremony CLAIR!
how wild their reception gets ( who dances the best, who gets drunk first, etc. ) They both get drunk fairly fast, Clair dances the best but Ian puts a good fight when drunk. and obviously by the end of the night they’re slow dancing the drunkness away with her head on his shoulder and him holding her close.
what their rings are like Ian’s a white gold with the celtic knot, fairly wide. And Clair’s would be the womanly thin version of the same ring, so she could wear it with her engagement ring that she’ll love dearly. They’ll have and a french engraving on the inner rings; éclairs et tonnerre (lightning and thunder U_U).
what sort of favours they have ( heart shaped sparklers, mini champagne bottles, personalised candy etc. ) First aid kits for a hangover that are filled with candies.
where they go for their honeymoon Egypt and Morocco. Because why not. (Plus she’ll love seeing him sweat and tanned and eating ice cream naked ahem).
something memorable that happens during the party / ceremony ( do they run out of ice and someone goes to get it in full formal wear on foot, does anyone fall asleep in the middle of the party, etc. ) Someone would get so drunk he’ll fall and crash one of the tables, but they’ll all just laugh about it.
who officiates the ceremony A random pastor.
what song their first dance is to - LA Mer (but this version).
who gives who away as they walk down the aisle Ideally, it’ll be Clair’s dad. But for some reason I do believe it’ll end up being her maternal grandfather.

Hobbies and Talents -Drawing, reading, finding more ways to make medicine Backstory: In the very beginning Long ago about 4,000 years, there was a tribe of Mexican brown bats called, “La Tribu Escondida” (The Hidden Tribe in Spanish). They had a beautiful goddess of healing named Paramecia, who only appeared to them when they needed her magical healing ability to heal the sick and injured by saying a little prayer to her: “Oh mística diosa de la curación, venga a nosotros en nuestra hora de necesidad, bañarnos en tu luz de gloria y cura nuestras almas. Paramecia, surgir!” (“Oh mystical goddess of healing, come forth to us in our hour of need, bathe us in your light of glory and heal our souls. Paramecia, arise!”) Once this prayer is said, Paramecia will show herself to her followers and heed their call. Being a tribe not interested in fighting like their Goddess, they were left very vulnerable to outside predators. This led to search for willing neighboring tribes to partner with. The tribe sent out two scouting bats to search the area for friendly neighbors. The first few tries weren’t successful but soon they came upon a village down by the stream filled with Long Eared Hedgehogs. They seemed on edge at first, but once they saw there was only two bats and were unarmed they eased up and tried to communicate with the bats. After some time learning each other’s culture and languages, they were able to come to an agreement. The bats will gain protection from anyone wanting to attack them plus jewelry the hedgehogs were very skilled in making, and in turn for that they will help keep the hedgehog warriors in tip top shape and heal anyone that is injured or ill. For several years everything was fine and they lived in peace with one another. Until a neighboring tribe, The Knuckles Clan, sought to take the goddess away. They had heard of her mystic healing ability and sought the power for their own selfish gain. The Hidden Tribe, wishing not to fight, but also refusing to give up their precious healing god, sent two bats to warn the Knuckles clan, that if the goddesses’ power was abused she would die. Due to the ambition of the clan, this message was not able to be carried out and the two bats never returned. Paramecia was alerted by the spirits of the fallen there was little time to prepare for an attack. The Knuckles clan had sent a group of warriors to attack the bat village, just as she expected. In desperate attempt, the bat tribe called to their goddess of healing to protect them. Paramecia set up a temporary shield to protect her followers and push back the forces of the Knuckles clan, but her shield won’t hold out for long. There were a few Long Eared Hedgehogs in the village when the knuckles clan attacked, they prepared for battle as soon as the shield went down. For days, the bloody war went on between the Long Eared Hedgehogs and the Echidnas. Paramecia and the bats did the best they could to help the warriors, but their adversaries were relentless. The Long Eared Hedgehogs were losing their ground fast, they knew they weren’t as strong as these echidnas. Until they finally broke through the defenses and into the bat village. Attacking and killing anyone that got in their way. Paramecia was cornered and unsure of what to do now, she apologized to her superiors for what she was about to do. With her arms open wide, her mystical light showered the raging echidnas coming at her, she took the lives away from every single echidna there, including the lives of the fallen bats and hedgehogs. The positive lives she took wasn’t enough to purify the anger and hatred the echidnas had, she couldn’t control them. Unable to return their energy back to the earth, Paramecia was transformed into a raging spirit, corrupted with sadness, anger, and hate. She attacked her own followers and her hedgehog allies. Taking lives away and destroying homes. Her rage didn’t last long as a divine light showered down on her, it was the God Apollo her great-great grandfather. He punished her by stripping her down to a small child, filled with innocence and purity and sealed her away in a diamond. As part of the punishment, Paramecia can’t come out of her diamond and only radiate her healing through it to heal whoever needs it. He then handed the diamond to the Bat chief; Yatzil, to care for it. The bats and hedgehogs still traumatized by what happened, put the diamond away in a cave, guarding it so no one can steal it or miss use it. When healing is needed, one or two visitors are allowed in the cave. Over time, the next generations grew distant from the goddess of healing for their own peruse of medical herbs and first aid. They considered moving away to a new location, and since it’s been awhile since their last journey to the cave they had forgotten in which cave the healing goddess was concealed in. So they left without her and only told stories of the past to the next generation of bats to come of the goddess and the heroics of the Long Eared Hedgehogs. Fast Forward to several centuries later… A young bat named Bruno loved listening to the stories of his ancestors. He fantasized about finding Paramecia, which the other bats laughed at. Bruno wasn’t worried, as he trained for his adventure with the help of his girlfriend Conchita. One day, a plague swept the village. Their arts couldn’t cure it, causing many deaths. And though Bruno was among the few who were safe, Conchita wasn’t so lucky. Lives were now at stake, including hers. Bruno followed old maps to the ancient bat civilization in his search for the healing goddess. He searched for days among vegetation and caves, but couldn’t find the diamond the goddess was sealed in. Bruno nearly gave up, until he recalled a prayer in the old stories. After chanting the prayer, Bruno followed the glow of a soft green light that appeared near the summit of the mountain. He found the diamond inside a cave but slipped as he exited. The diamond shattered on the ground and the healing spirit was released. She embedded herself into his body and overwhelmed him. When Bruno woke up, he saw the shattered diamond and cried in grief. A burning sensation in his hands snapped him out of it, as he noticed he now possessed the healing power. With new hope in his heart, he returned to the village and cured everyone. Bruno married Conchita and became the village doctor, taking care of the bats for years. But he fell ill before his son was born, as overuse of the powers finally claimed his life. The loss of their healer devastated the villagers, who called it a ‘curse’ for abandoning Paramecia. Almost a year later, Bruno’s son Cezar was born. As time passed he displayed his late father’s healing power at an early age, but his mother told him to keep it in check and the village bats avoided him, fearing the ‘curse of Paramecia’. Cezar grew up healthy and studied to be a certified doctor, but years of oppression got to him. So he left the village in search of a new home where he would be accepted. Cezar’s travels took him to Royal Hill Zone, a town in the West Side Island that was run by the Kingdom of Acorns. There, he met a lovely long eared hedgehog with a royal sash. Her name was Marie and she introduced herself as the weapons designer for the kingdom. She invited Cezar to join the army as their doctor, a chance Cezar was eager to take. Cezar proved himself to King Nigel Acorn the next day and was hired into the army afterwards. With his new found purpose, he created a name for himself among the new town as time passed. Times were peaceful when Cezar joined, until one tragic day. Dr. Robotnik, the kingdom’s commander, had turned traitor. He secretly built an army of animal-powered robots and taken Sir Charles’ Roboticizer, weaponizing it for evil purposes. A great war followed and the kingdom fell, forcing King Nigel to hide with his people in Knothole village as the Acorn army suffered heavy losses. The survivors didn’t know how to attack the robots without hurting the animals or former allies. Jules and Lena, two married hedgehogs in the army, figured out a way to stop their enemies without hurting them. The army regained the upper hand and drove Robotnik’s forces from their sanctuary, then fought him for years until he was seemingly defeated. Peace swept through the land at last. Ties That Bind Us Comic Issue 1: After peace returned to the land, Lena falls ill. Jules discovers that his wife is pregnant and they retired from military duty to raise their baby. The two hedgehogs wonder if it was the right decision, as they worried that Robotnik may return. 5 months later, Lena and Jules were expecting their baby when Robotnik attacked Knothole Village with a new robot army. The hedgehogs fight back alongside Marie, but a stray bomb nearly kills Lena and her baby. Jules takes his wife and unborn child to the military medic, hoping to save them. Cezar’s powerful healing ability didn’t seem to be enough. Desperate to save Lena, Cezar pulls out a chaos emerald and amplifies his power. This unexpected trick manages to save Lena’s life and she delivers her baby one month later with no complications. (You can read this issue in my gallery under The Ties That Bind Us tab) The born baby, now named Sonic, showed signs of high velocity when crawling, walking, and running. Concerned, Jules and Lena took him to Cezar for an explanation of this strange behavior. Cezar concluded that, when he used the chaos emerald to save Lena’s life, Sonic’s DNA must have been infused with its energy. Cezar reassures the couple that their baby is healthy and shows no complications with this power of speed. Sonar’s Story Begins: With their worries put to rest, Marie announced that she was finally pregnant. In the middle of celebrations, Cezar announces his plan to return home with his family. King Acorn granted him approval to build a hospital clinic in the bat village and, should Robotnik attack again, Cezar’s family would be safer there. The two hedgehogs knew that this was for the best. After saying their goodbyes, they moved back to Mystic Ruins. 6 months passed, the hospital clinic was ready for services and another baby was born. A hybrid of a bat and long eared hedgehog, with huge deep brown ears. A small bundle of joy, named Sonar. The first few months were fine, but the hospital needed full attention from her parents. Marie was the technician keeping the machines running properly, while Cezar was the doctor performing miracles and surgeries. They focused on the patients staying there, but didn’t have time to raise their little girl. Cezar’s mother, Conchita, stepped in to help raise Sonar. She learned to speak Spanish as her first language, picking up English when her mother was home in the evenings. One day, Cezar noticed Sonar didn’t show his trademark healing ability. He tried to show her how to bring out this power, but she simply didn’t have it in her. Disappointed in this realization, Cezar just gave lessons to Sonar about first aid, emergencies and picking herbs to keep her busy and away from him. At 2 years of age Sonar displayed excellent knowledge of plants to make elixirs. She was happy to learn and make her father proud, but Cezar just pointed out her mistakes and got mad over missed details. He rarely noticed Sonar’s hard work. It made her feel worthless to him. 2 years later, life changed for the worst. Conchita passed away, so Sonar now had to visit the hospital every day so her parents could keep an eye on her. Kids in the neighborhood picked on her, destroying her herbs. And though she befriended some sick kids, they didn’t have the energy to play with her for long. Sonar felt completely alone, holding on to her grandmother’s heart earrings to remember her by. Even with odds against her, Sonar was determined to be the best doctor there ever was. So she spent most of her time reading about the Mobian body and drawing to the best of her ability. However, an evil force attacked the bat village one day. Big hairy wolves on the hunt for Sonar’s parents. Marie hid her daughter and told her to escape if they didn’t return. Sonar found herself in the village bunkers, with Cezar’s medic bag and Marie’s cloak. The assailants hailed from the Black Iron Kingdom and were hunting Cezar out of revenge. Once, he refused to heal their sick queen after the birth of her second son. Their king, Alfalo, held a grudge on Cezar for this and now sought to make his family suffer for condemning his kingdom. Cezar and Marie fought as hard as they could, but they were captured in the end. An hour later, the village was left in ruins but Sonar was still in the bunker. Her parents didn’t return, so now she had to escape by herself. She struggled for weeks in the wilderness, learning from experience. One day, however, she discovered a strange metallic capsule in a forest. She approached it only to be captured, leaving her stranded again. She couldn’t break free, but her screams alerted a certain blue hedgehog. He saved Sonar and introduced himself as Sonic, but called her ‘Noisy’ over those screams. Sonar claimed she didn’t want his help and argued with him over attacking robots due to the animals trapped inside them. They got off to a rocky start on their unexpected bond. As the years passed, Sonar began to manifest powers of her own. By saving animals from capsules and robots, she felt useful and grew closer to Sonic. However, one day a tense argument led to them going their separate ways, putting an end to their 4-year-long friendship. Sonic met new friends and embarked on adventures to stop Robotnik, while Sonar healed the sick and injured people in towns and villages. She constantly thought about her friend and regretted parting ways with him. Before she knew it, though, she caught the attention of the Black Iron Kingdom and was captured at last.  Prince Henry took interest in Sonar when she arrived at the castle, but his father disapproved. King Alfalo hated Cezar for letting the queen die, so he ordered Henry to enslave Sonar and make her suffer in return. Henry was no stranger to abusing and dominating women, so Sonar was no exception. But being exposed to the castle’s dark energies also made her feel ill. She was too weak to resist the darkness as it twisted her mind. In time, she embraced Henry’s commands and abuse as a sign of love. At age 12, the darkness within Sonar evolved. Sensing new power within her, Henry gave her a simple order: Kill his father. This was her chance to get back at the King for all of his hatred towards her, so she gladly accepted. Henry watched as his father was suddenly eradicated, his life taken by Sonar’s darkness. She proved her love to him and he proposed to her in return. Soon, the Black Iron Kingdom had a new ruler and Sonar was at his side. She would become his Queen, feared by the slaves and respected by others. Any who opposed her would be vanquished like the former King, her dark heart could not be happier about the life she had now. But was she proud of herself? Before her heart could waver, Henry revealed that Sonar’s parents were being held in a lower chamber. She relished the opportunity to see them again, but it was no reunion. Like the fools at the castle, they had caused her so much pain in the past, and now she had the power to take revenge for what they did. Tried as they might have, they couldn’t reason with her as she smirked. In a flash, their souls were now hers. Nothing else remained. Sonar had come to enjoy her new life. She was soon to be the wife of a powerful ruler who she loved, despite how harshly he treated her sometimes. All that changed in a year, however, when a small female jackal arrived at the castle. She was abused by Henry and the guards, just like Sonar herself was. Memories stirred within her mind and she found herself running to the jackal’s side, intending to protect her from her would-be husband. Appalled by his future wife’s behavior, Henry ordered her to take the small jackal’s life or else. Sonar felt conflicted for the first time in so long, torn between the child’s safety and the true behavior of the man she loved. She couldn’t do it, so Henry forced her to wear special gloves that suppress her dark powers. Just like that, Sonar was a slave once again, forced to endure mockery and beatings from the Mobians who once feared her. Not even rolling into a ball kept her safe, as Henry had the guards rip out her back quills. All she could do was take the pain and promised the child, Kerry, that they would escape together someday. A year passed. Henry felt confident in arranging a wedding with Sonar after seeing she had become obedient once again. She no longer loved him and didn’t want to marry such a man, but she accepted to protect Kerry. As Sonar stepped to the altar, the castle shook. The dark energies stirred and the Mobians panicked as they feared for the Kingdom’s safety. Seizing the opportunity, Sonar took Kerry and ran away in the ensuing chaos. They left the Black Iron Kingdom behind, but Sonar kept the special gloves on, fearing the darkness within herself. She vowed never to use such powers again. A year of constant movement was rough for Sonar and Kerry, as they needed to avoid the Black Iron guards and so couldn’t afford much food or rest. They reached the outskirts of a city known as Spangonia, but were suddenly attacked by a scientist; none other than Eggman himself. He detected Sonar’s energy signature and forced her to cooperate for experiments by capturing Kerry. Not wanting to see her hurt or disappointed, Sonar waited out her fate, until a blue blur swept the room. Sonar and Kerry were free all of a sudden, so Eggman called in robots to attack the intruder he knew all too well; Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic easily defeated Eggman’s robots and took the girls to safety. Aboard an airship called the Sky Patrol, Sonar and Kerry met a group called the Freedom Fighters, rebels sworn to protect Mobius from Eggman. They suspected that he wanted the power within Sonar and vowed to keep her safe, even as she kept to herself and refused to talk to her new allies. With only Kerry’s confessions and Sonar’s troubled rest to go on, the team could only guess what horror she had to endure. As weeks passed, Sonar and Kerry felt more comfortable with the team and learned about events they missed out on during their slavery. One incident in particular was the global crisis caused by an ancient beast known as Dark Gaia. When Sonic and the Freedom Fighters defeated it, its darkness shook the world as balance was restored. As Sonar realized this allowed her to escape a year ago, Sonic recognized his childhood friend at last. He was excited to see her again, but his joy turned to sorrow when Sonar didn’t recognize him. Months had passed when Eggman suddenly launched a full-scale assault. The Freedom Fighters rushed to the scene but Eggman grabbed Sonar while they were distracted. Before she knew it, she was placed inside a machine that extracted her power. As her life was drained away, Sonar lamented not having a chance to be the doctor she always wanted to be. Sonic arrived just in time to break the machine, but instead of stopping the machine, it caused the dark energies to surge back into Sonar. Her gloves were destroyed in this surge and her body was overtaken by the darkness once more. Sonic blamed himself as Sonar escaped. By the time the Freedom Fighters caught up, Sonar had changed. She had grown sharp talons, bat wings and fangs. Her pupils were no longer visible and her body was engulfed in a dark arura. Wherever she flew, innocent lives disappeared. She spared no one, not even a small child who tried to remind her of a promise before her life was taken as well. Kerry’s last words were useless. As a desperate measure, survivors called upon a military force, the Guardian Units of Nations. The soldiers prepared to kill the monster, but Sonic still wanted to save her. He knew that Sonar’s rampage wasn’t her doing, but rather the lingering influence of Dark Gaia. Fortunately, the Freedom Fighters had a desperate measure of their own; the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic’s friends had the foresight to hold on to them for such emergencies. Harnessing their power, he transformed into Super Sonic and rushed at Sonar before the G.U.N soldiers opened fire. As the dust settled, Sonic and Sonar had disappeared. Sonar found herself in the arid sands of Shamar, far away from innocent people. She tried to defend herself from this golden warrior who dared to challenge her, but he was too fast for her. She struggled to fly away as she wasn’t use to her new wings and she couldn’t take the life she couldn’t catch. All she could do was to endure powerful blows as her energy depleted. She seized an opportunity to grab the warrior and tried to take his life with what little strength she had left. She locked hands with the warrior and Sonar got a good look at his face…something about it was familiar. Memories began to stir within Sonar and, moments before a powerful head-butt finally knocked her out, she recognized the warrior who stopped her… Sonic. As Sonar plummeted to the ground, the darkness lost its grip on her mind. She could now see the lives she had taken and feel their pain as if it was her own. Sonar no longer wanted them to suffer any more, so she apologized for everything she had done. The darkness manifested as the monster she had become in one last attempt to trap her, but Sonar had made up her mind by then. Super Sonic watched over the crater Sonar had created from her harsh landing. The dark aura surrounding Sonar vanished with one last pulse that overwhelmed Sonic and transformed him into a monster as well: a werehog shape he had taken during the crisis of Dark Gaia. Sonic resisted this familiar darkness as he saw many souls flowing from Sonar’s body. Soon both of them had returned to normal and Sonic took her back to his friends, watching as the souls flew into the distance. Back at Station Square, recovery efforts were already underway. Sonic explained to G.U.N. that Sonar was under the influence of Dark Gaia, like so many others in the past. Trusting Sonic’s experience in dealing with Dark Gaia, their general approved and Sonar was given proper healthcare for her injuries. Sonar returned to the Freedom Fighters after a few days of treatment, but people were still afraid. Sonar was tempted to run away in guilt, until Sonic told her about the souls that escaped her body. He felt that someday they would return after healing up, just like she did. So in order to redeem herself, she vowed to become what she always wanted to be; a real doctor. In order to help Sonar with her redemption, the Freedom Fighters recommended getting help from a proper expert in the medical field. Most doctors turned down the so-called monster, but one doctor in the city of Chun-Nan accepted the offer; Allure the Orchid Mantis. She saw a familiar potential in Sonar, who proved herself to be very smart in medical subjects, much like an old student of hers. Allure wanted to visit them at a hidden bat village years ago, but an invasion by the Black Iron Kingdom made her believe her student died. As Sonar told her about her time as a prisoner, both student and master realized who they were talking about: Sonar’s father, Cezar.  After this realization, Sonar opened up about the abuse she endured as a child, especially at the hands of her own father. Allure realized Cezar had become bitter over trying to control the life of another but reassured Sonar that she already had the potential to be a better healer than her father, she was merely allowing her fears to hold her back. Over 2 years, Allure taught Sonar to care for others without hatred in her heart, to seek kindness rather than revenge and to forgive the fleeting pains of life. By the time Sonar completed her training, she felt alive once more. She couldn’t wait to return home and turn her life around. Promising to stay in touch with her master, Sonar returned to Royal Hill Zone. The Freedom Fighters welcomed her and helped her to fix up an old home, turning it into a clinic for Sonar to establish her new life. The team also had one more surprise for her as they took her to a new place; Sanctuary, a safe haven for young kids affected by warfare. Among those young kids was a familiar face… a small child who didn’t recognize Sonar at first, but whose tears fell just the same. For the first time in years, Sonar shared a hug with her first friend, Kerry. Over the next few months, Sonar received formal training to discover her potential as a Freedom Fighter. She learned how to control her speed, fight at close quarters and even various tricks with her voice. Life was finally looking up for Sonar, until the Freedom Fighters received an ultimatum from an old foe: the newly-crowned King of the Black Iron Kingdom; Henry. A transmission received by King Acorn requested a meeting with the Freedom Fighters at the Black Iron Castle, or else two prisoners would be murdered. Sonar recognized their faces… her parents were alive but far from safe. As memories of her past crawl into her mind, Sonar was determined to overcome her fears, save her parents and defeat Henry once and for all. The Sky Patrol approached the Black Iron castle at Scrap Brain Zone, when artillery suddenly opened fire. The Freedom Fighters split into two teams, with Sonar and Sonic leading one into the castle. Dark Gaia monsters ambushed the team, but Sonic’s friends decided to hold them off so he and Sonar could rush to the throne room. Soon they faced Henry, who wanted revenge for Dark Gaia’s defeat and the decaying state of his kingdom. While he planned to kill Sonic himself, Henry summoned a dark entity to keep Sonar busy. It looked just like her corrupted self and even sought to take over her body… but Sonar had no intention to run from the darkness this time. The two were evenly matched as they struggled for dominance. However, Sonar recalled a lesson from her master and realized fighting the monster would get her nowhere. So she stopped resisting and allowed it to engulf her. Instead of being consumed by the darkness, Sonar’s healing powers flowed from her body and purified the monster, allowing the darkness to return to its rightful place. Sonar was weakened by the battle, but she felt at peace for a brief moment as she returned to her friends. Unfortunately, Henry had embraced what darkness remained and became too powerful for Sonic to handle. During their struggle, Sonic was slammed into a pillar and part of the ceiling crumbled. Sunlight filtered into the throne room and vanquished one of the monsters. Now the other Freedom Fighters knew what they needed to do. Bunnie the cyborg rabbit fired her weapons at the ceiling so more sunlight could fill the room. Her husband protected her from the surviving monsters and Amy Rose swung her hammer around to take care of the resulting debris. Thanks to their teamwork, the monsters were vanquished and Henry was backed into the remaining shadows. Sonar pointed a tranquilizer gun at him, hoping to bring him to justice at last. But he simply laughed and vanished, claiming the battle wasn’t over yet. Suddenly the castle began to crumble and large chunks of debris fell on the team. Sonic and Sonar were able to avoid them and Bunnie blasted them out of the sky, but Amy and Antoine weren’t so lucky. The inhabitants of the Black Iron castle ran for their lives, but Sonar’s parents were nowhere in sight and Bunnie cried for the safety of her friends. Sonar panicked about what to do, but Sonic entrusted their lives to her as he ran. Sonar relaxed in the midst of the chaos and unleashed her power, saving Amy and Antoine from seemingly fatal injuries. They were impressed by Sonar’s healing powers and grateful for her help. She smiled and collapsed soon after, having exhausted herself at last. When Sonar finally woke up, the battle had ended. She was worried sick about her parents, but the Freedom Fighters comforted her as Sonic arrived, with Cezar and Marie in tow. Sonar felt overjoyed to see them alive and well, so the team backed off to let them have their long-awaited reunion. Sonar’s happiness turned to fear as she worried about what they thought of her, after everything she had done. Marie reassured Sonar that she fixed much more than she broke and Cezar apologized for not believing in Sonar sooner. They felt responsible for the abuse that had made their daughter this way… and yet, they were grateful to have each other again. Sonar couldn’t agree more. Sonar was one of the many heroes praised for their actions in ending the tyranny of the Black Iron Kingdom. Without their king, the guards surrendered. The slaves and maids were taken to hospitals for treatment. The darkness had vanished from Scrap Brain Zone and the world finally knew Sonar was more than just some monster. She was born a long-eared hedgehog, once a former servant of darkness, now a certified doctor. A redeemed hero. A Freedom Fighter.  “Even if you stray from your destiny, never forget who you want to be. Stay determined and life will find its way back home.” ~ Dr. Sonar Breezy, The Long-Eared Hedgehog. Sonar’s love life Past experiences taught Sonar not to open up about her feelings, out of fear of breaking her heart. Sonic was unlike any man she met, however. His humor, passion for life and fun-loving attitude made Sonar feel alive. She cherished their training sessions and couldn’t stop thinking about him even as she worked in her clinic. Sonar was hardly the only girl who felt this way about Sonic, though. He was constantly chased by other girls, Amy showed interest in him and even Sally herself used to date him. Sonar felt she had no chance with Sonic and so hid her desire for Sonic, feeling she would just cause fights with her teammates. One day, Sonic showed up at her clinic. He wanted to grab some ice cream in Apotos and Sonar took the chance, having just closed the clinic for the day. A seemingly calm night on the town felt awkward, as their emotions brought them closer. Sonic confessed to Sonar that he had been thinking about her for so long, that this was the first time since Sally that he felt so strongly for a girl. Sonar was thrilled to know he felt the same way, but worried she was just one of the many girls to Sonic. He simply laughed it off and reminded her of the difference: they chased him, but he sought her out. It was a choice guided by passion, like so many others Sonar had come to cherish form her blue hero. Neither of them knew exactly what to do next, so they just closed their eyes and embraced each other. It was an unforgettable night for Sonar… the first kiss with her beloved hero, the day their fates ran together. The feelings that trapped Sonar had set her free at last. Finally after 9 years it is done, her full out backstory. GEEZUS!!! But anyways, yeah, hope you enjoy and actually get to know and understand Sonar a lot better now. Owo Sonar belngs to me somar15 Kerry belongs to xcherieshedmemoriesx Special thanks to saphira24667 for the picture ref sheet and also valiantphoenix for helping out with the editing of the bio and bouncing ideas around. Emmerdale Live and Organized - July 24, 2017
Welcome to Rhonas trial week! Also...Robert....he falls...right? I'm not sure. *WINK* Let's see what is happening in the village today!
Did someone have an idea? No. No idea what is to come at all McCain writers! It drives us fans mad I tell you…MAD! *evil laugh in the distance*
CafĂŠ Crew
I love Leyla's outfits. I’d raid her closet anytime.
Guys…trust in Lydia. She has no reason to lie to all of you.
I think Frank has been stealing because Faith referenced it and I trust Faith too. (kind of…I just love Faith. HA!)
Jackie Kennedy meets Kim K? Oh boy. That’s a combo! Thanks Leyla for that visual. Leyla does look like Audrey Hepburn.
YELLOW. EVERYWHERE YELLOW.
Picking your engagement ring on your own. How romantic Pete. *eye roll*
The Factory Crew
Nicola throws kids/baby at Nell who is in hell. Nice Nicola.
Nicola is a Republican. Who knew?
Davids
Hey, David! *wiggles eyebrows*
Tracy will never trust her dad.  I won’t lie…I love this. Go Tracy! GO!
David and Tracy are funny together. Don’t ask me why. I just feel that way.
“She married Jai didn’t she?” OUCH. *HA HA HA*
David is in hell. I can watch David all day. *dreamy eyes* *slaps face* I’m good.
Awwww, David is pretty but easily used. *pulls out bubble wrap just in case*
Rhona/Paddy/Leo/Vanessa
I’m not sure they will find him guilty. I want them too. HOWEVER, nothing is going to plan this year is it? Life is like that, not what you expect.
You got Laurel on your side? YOU GOT GOD ON YOUR SIDE! *wink*
Oh, Rhona. Honey. *pulls out bubble wrap*
Nicola/Priya/Pete
AH. I see Pete has the same timing as Rebecca. Pregnancy test?!?! *Rebecca and Pete appear*
Yeah, is it an affair if you only slept together twice? Serious question.
I feel like Planned Parenthood has to come to Emmerdale and give a review of birth control options.
The Pub Crew
Yes, Megan. It’s just an error. SURE. SURE MEGAN. I’m like Faith. I don’t buy it.
I wonder if Faith set him up.  Faith is a crafty little one.
Nell and Jai are kind of wet blankets now.  *sigh*
Faith is awesome. That is all.
Why is Kerry still wearing her birthday outfit with the button?!? WHAT?!?!
OH. Hey, Charity! Welcome home. OH! Noah is home too! I love it! OH. Wait. Charity is at your engagement party?!? That’s not a good sign.
A Clear Blue ad? OH SHIT. Priya! OH GOD NO. Leyla knows! Well, not that type of know but she KNOWS. *I’m getting all Joey from Friends up in here*
Negative. Knew it. We don’t need more of that crap around here.
Sigh. I know Aaron is going to be mean and push Robert away, but I really don’t want to think about it just yet.  My heart is broken enough. Seriously. I need to prepare more for that moment. It will hurt so bad.
Pete. Ever the charmer. Priya and Pete. There isn’t anything there, right? They barely set anything up! Again, that whole time thing might come into play sooner or later.
Charity sounds like me when I’m speculating about Rebecca being two faced idiots she is. Over a Robron wedding song. Again people…again…could be complete crap or could be hinting. Sigh.  I’m such a theory ho.
'It's Just Speculation!'
Tumblr media
What do you think? Tell me below or shoot over a tweet @AmandaJ718!
As usual, ignore the message boards. Be good to each other. Breathe. Reboot. Eat a snickers.
Until next time, see you around in Emmerdale!

Note
1-100
…are you joking
no one on this earth wants to know that much about me
you asked for it:
-
1: when you have cereal, do you have more milk than cereal or more cereal than milk?
The intention is always more cereal than milk, and yet… it always ends up being the opposite.
-
2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day?
…as an Australian, NO
-
3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books?
Heh, what DON’t I use?
Receipts, assignments, old documents, letters, other books, string, anything i can lean it against and hold it open with, etc.
even the odd obliging cat’s paw for a few minutes
-
4: how do you take your coffee/tea?
~I drink neither, I am boring like that~
-
5: are you self-conscious of your smile?
Yeah, I’m aware of how fucking ridiculous I look when I smile, and my non-perfect teeth.
-
6: do you keep plants?
not currently, but I used to have sunflowers and such
7: do you name your plants?
not usually, which is odd bc i name literally everything else
-
8: what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings?
~writing~
words are easy
have tried painting and drawing but i’m just so shithouse at it
-
9: do you like singing/humming to yourself?
Y~E~S
all the time
-
10: do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach?
All, depends on the day really.
-
11: what’s an inner joke you have with your friends?
Well, a few years back for some reason some irl friends and I would randomly start singing the Narwhals Narwhals song, or reply ‘the dirt is gone!’ after anyone said ‘Bam!’
but recently? online? uhhhhhhh… well, i send shitty mouse-drawn-in-Paint pics to the ever-patient camiluna27 and she finds polite things to say about them… which is our little joke
-
12: what’s your favorite planet?
Like my favourite Sailor Scout, it’s Jupiter.
-
13: what’s something that made you smile today?
Our foster puppy is coming today
-
14: if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like?
it wouldn’t matter what it looked like, we’d make it work even if our only furniture was a minifridge and a beanbag… sharing the chores, watching stupid shit at night, complaining or joking with each other, etc.
-
15: go google a weird space fact and tell us what it is!
It takes 230 million years for our solar system to make a single orbit around the Milky Way.

Tuna Mornay (? never been sure how it’s spelled tbh)

-
20: what’s your favourite eye color?
I have no preference for eye colour.
-
21: talk about your favorite bag, the one that’s been to hell and back with you and that you love to pieces.
Oh, I got this shoulder bag thing from The Harry Potter Experience when it came to Australia… it’s half-covered in an ever-changing bunch of badges (keep losing and finding them/getting new ones). it’s been left in the sun, saturated, pelted with hail as i ran for cover, etc.
-
22: are you a morning person?
I never used to be… but since the antidepressants, i’m finding mornings way easier.
-
23: what’s your favourite thing to do on lazy days where you have 0 obligations?
mess about on the computer, usually

yeah, a few
-
25: what’s the weirdest place you’ve ever broken into?
???? who in the hell is breaking into enough places to have a top ten list?
-
26: what are the shoes you’ve had for forever and wear with every single outfit?
Heh, I just have a handful of cheap-ass shoes I got from Big W a few years ago and I get cheap insert things to keep them alive. I randomly put on any pair i can find, whether they match the outfit or not… what other choice do you have with big lady feet and soft skin?
-
27: what’s your favorite bubblegum flavor?
Fruity
-
28: sunrise or sunset?
Sunset.
Sunrise means I’ve been awake too long and have Fucked Up ™
-
29: what’s something really cute that one of your friends does and is totally endearing?
not to bring her up consistently, but camiluna27 literally drew fanart of one of my fanfics (the first ever??? holy shit) and I was so goddamn flattered I almost couldn’t believe it… someone liked my trash and DREW SOMETHING?
such talent. much love. so excite. wow.
-
30: think of it: have you ever been truly scared?
Pfft, yeah, probably.
-
31: what is your opinion of socks? do you like wearing weird socks? do you sleep with socks? do you confine yourself to white sock hell? really, just talk about socks.
Socks are good.
I am making a sock right now, in viking fashion, it looks ridiculous.
Sleep? In winter, sometimes.
MISMATCHED SOCKS WERE A GODDAMN FASHION STATEMENT AT SCHOOL HELL YEAH
-
32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends.
Well there were two funny things.
the first one was this massive sleepover party, and the minute the lights went off with all these adolescents sardined on the floor (teens but like, everyone was just chilling nothing nsfw happening), the marshmallow war began
it’s 3am and people are being PELTED with the goddamn things in the dark it was chaos.
the other time, i’d gone to a party thing, put up a tent to stay over like the others and this other girl at the party i’d just befriended (along with her highly anxious friend i managed to calm down) was not sure how to get home and i’m like… stay in my tent i have space it’s chill
we’re sleeping in jeans bc that seemed like a good idea at the time (it was NOT)
everyone’s STARVING. like, no real FOOD was at this party (New Years party?) we had chips and softdrink and that was it… and i dunno if you know this, but no amount of like, chicken-flavoured chips will fill up the aching hollow in your stomach for Real Food
so we’re talking bc we’re awake, relative strangers who are starving together in a tent they’re intending to share the night in, and we get on to SUPERNATURAL
i loved the show still it wasn’t the disaster it became, yet… and she admits that the S1 episode with the Wendigo freaked her out… and i’m like, hah, yeah, glad we’re not in a tent with woods around, huh? bc i am an asshole… that was pretty much where we were
and around the same time, the free-roaming chickens on the property are slowly moving past and making satanic noises, freaking her out more so i changed the topic to calm things down… but then, later on (waaaaaaaaay too early in the morning bc some of us had to pee early and it was Effort™ ) i get back to the tent to find a Chicken. In. The Tent.
looking at me like *I* was being the asshole here for intruding on her rest.
the other chick-a-dee is sleeping and im thinking ‘well fuck she’ll freak if the chicken’s randomly there when she wakes… and i try to subtly get the chicken out, and if you know chickens… you can understand how i failed
it was hilarious, and disastrous.
-
33: what’s your fave pastry?
don’t know, really
-
34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it?
Oh! I still have them.
There’s two, one called (creatively) Teddy, who wore a yellow onesie the Parental Unit made for him. My fondest memory of him was this time in kindy where we took our teddies in bc it was ‘Teddy Bear Picnic Day’, and during naptime, the teachers took the teddies and hid them around the playground…
We had to find them when we woke up.
Teddy had one foot in the top of the fence and looked like he was trying to leave/escape… i told the Parental Unit this story a thousand times over the years, the poor bugger.
The other one was made for me, after Parental Unit had a dream i’d be a girl. Her name is Heidi (you know, after the song? ‘Heidi, Heidi, Heidi ho, the elephant walks oh so slow’), she’s a pink elephant in a tutu and lovely and she and ted are hella safe for now.
-
35: do you like stationary and pretty pens and so on? do you use them often?
I do like them, and when i get a special pen i use it for EVERYTHING, then flounder to find a basic pen when it runs dry

I don’t know, i’m not really feeling anything.
What’s that song that’s just 3 minutes of silence?

What about Bob? (pt. 2)
Tumblr media
Mueller steps back out into the drizzling street. In the distance, a furtive figure catches his eye. A man carrying a brightly colored umbrella, its pattern indiscernible at this distance, is leaning over a garbage can. The man straightens, seeming to feel Mueller’s eyes on him. He scurries off, his gait both unusual and familiar. Mueller follows, no longer noticing the rain. As he trails the mysterious man, he is reminded of Mr. Tumnus, the faun in The Chronicles of Narnia, who helped the Pevensie children. Or did he sell them out to the White Witch? Mueller isn’t sure. He breaks his stride to consider the story, in that instant, the man with the umbrella disappears.
A few yards ahead Mueller sees former White House photographer Pete Souza coming out of a laundromat.
“Hey there!” Mueller calls. “Did you see a man with a pink umbrella go by a minute ago?”
Souza is startled and almost drops his sack of laundry. “No, I didn’t see anyone.”
Mueller continues, “it was one of those really big umbrellas.”
Souza replies, “I think I would have noticed that, Mr. Mueller, it’s not even raining.” Mueller stares at him. Souza goes on, attempting to be conversational, “It hasn’t rained here in weeks, we could really use it.”
Mueller continues to stare, he is sure it was drizzling only a few minutes ago. Then he thinks to himself, you can’t trust a photographer anyway. He is about the push past Souza to try to find the umbrella-wielding stranger when Souza pipes up again. Souza, alarmed at the lack of focus in Mueller’s eyes and the fact that he is wearing two ties, asks, “Are you okay, Mr. Mueller?”
Mueller snaps to attention and begins to correct Souza on the pronunciation of his name. “It’s Mueller, like mule. No, I mean it’s like dull, but with an ‘M,’ I mean...what were we talking about? I can’t say anything about the indictments.” Mueller presses his knuckles into his temples. Souza, meanwhile, has begun to back away.
“Can I call anyone for you, Mr. Mue…” Souza pauses, now unsure how to pronounce the name, “Can I get call an Uber for you?”
Mueller is looking frazzled now, “Who have you been talking to?! NO CALLS!” Mueller steps toward Souza and stares down at him, and the full force of the jowly features ripple over the photographer’s face. Could it be a mask? Souza is torn now, he wants to get away from Mueller, but he also feels that the man needs help.
Just then Senator Baldwin comes back around from the Chipotle across from the shawarma shop. “Just spit it out, Bob,” she yawps, smacking Mueller in the middle of his back. The force of the blow throws Mueller to his knees. She continues to march down the street without looking back.
Souza takes the moment of confusion to slip across the street.
Mueller stands up, dusting off his knees. Better get back to it; lunch is over he thinks to himself but really says out loud to a gaggle of tourists from Revere, Massachusetts. “Go get ‘em, Bowbby!” they say in response. He walks toward a federal building at a gait that anyone would label as “teetering” or “goofy,” but he thinks of as “power walking” or “a heel-forward clip.”
Teetering by several pristine government offices, Bob Mueller opens a black door, which reveals a hallway that has not been renovated in decades. It smells musty. Homey. Honest. He unlocks his office door and blurts out “what’have’we’got, gang?” It is a hive of productivity. In the back there are several cork boards with yarn radiating out from many axes, connecting disparate pieces of evidence. Trusted agents click-clack away at laptop keyboards, while others dig through crates of documents. Phones ring. An old stereo sounds a restrained jazzy beat. There are murmurs of “Hey, boss.” “Nothing yet.” “Too much to process.” “Hiya.”
Special Agent Sandra Willard slams her phone down. “Boss, it’s another flurry today.”
“Don’t I know it,” Mueller says, shaking his head, loosening one of his ties.
“Aiming for another write up in the New Yorker?” Sandra or Sandy if you prefer, asks, looking at the ties.
“Let’s just say it’s all part of the plan,” Mueller responds, winking at a blank wall as if someone were there. Two agents see this and exchange knowing looks. “Sandy, I ran into Tammy Baldwin at lunch today and she said that I shouldn’t worry about the time, but that I should keep my eye on it too. What the hell’s that mean?”
Sharpie in hand, Sandy writes this down on an index card and posts it on a cork board. “Cryptic. It’s something. We’re getting more used to this confusion every day,” she says shrugging. Index cards cover the boards with various phrases like “All is still in the moonlessness,” “It’s Mueller time,” “Four in one isn’t quite three of nine,” “Botched nose job,” etc.
“All will reveal itself,” Mueller declares, tapping his lip for ten minutes. “I also saw Souza today. He was telling me it wasn’t raining out.”
“Sure wasn’t. Wish it was. We really could use it,” Sandy adds. “But, then again, you can never trust a photographer, even when they’re right.”
“Agreed,” Mueller nods, pinning Souza’s name on the board for good measure. Unwrapping a Charleston Chew, he takes a generous bite. He gnaws, sizing up the board. He stares, shakes his head, rubs his eyes, still chewing. He unbuttons his blazer and places his hands in his pockets. “This is going nowhere,” he sputters between chews. Swallowing, he turns to everyone and says “You are all doing the work this country deserves. I can’t thank you enough and this citizenry owes you all a debt of gratitude. I’m a little stuck right now and need to work through some of this,” he explains, gesturing at a cluster of cards and strings, letting the day’s events wash over him. “I’m going to the gym.” High-fiving everyone he can on the way out, he grabs a copy of The Hilltop, Howard University’s best newspaper, by his estimation, to check for leads.
He teeters down the hallway and stumbles out into the bright sunlight. “Gosh darn it, Souza,” he mumbles, using one of his stronger oaths. He takes a hesitating step out onto the sidewalk. He can tell there is something off about how he is walking. He tries a few steps on his tip toes, then a few hops, then settles into stomping with his left foot and dragging his right foot to meet it.
Halfway to the gym is when his best frenemy and doppleganger, John Kerry, bursts out of a boarded up Border’s. “Typical,” Mueller thinks, “Just what I need.”
“Heya, Three Sticks,” Kerry calls out, “How’s the weather up there.” Kerry runs up and hip checks Mueller. “What’s with the two-step?”
Mueller doesn’t understand the reference. “John, have you spoken to Senator Baldwin lately?”
“Sure, she’s in my improv group.”
“She told me something kind of cryptic today, off the record, ya know. Something about how time was short.”
“Well, sure, Bob. Time is like a hand slowly circling a clock face. But you’d have to talk to someone on the Budget Committee to really understand it.”
Mueller finds this statement to be completely unhelpful. He tries to lose Kerry in a gaggle of 7th graders, but it doesn’t work because they’re both much taller than the kids. “Listen John, I need to get to the gym to do some reading.” He stomps off before Kerry can react.
At the gym, the twenty-something at the desk says, “Good Morning, Mr. Mueller, enjoy your workout.”
“It’s Mueller,” Mueller snaps, “Like bugler, with an ‘M,’ I mean it’s like bowler, like that hat.”
In the locker room, Mueller removes his remaining tie. It has a golf theme, with tees, and ball, and putters printed all over it. “Where the heck did I get this thing? Have I ever even played golf?” He promptly ties it around his waist.
He goes out into the gym to use his usual bench press. There is a new motivational sign on the wall next to him. “There’s only one today until tomorrow!” it reads. Mueller is struck by this sentiment. Surely it was placed here for him to see. Is it a threat or a clue? Mueller can’t tell. He leans back on the bench, places The Hilltop over his head and falls asleep.
A field, green with wildgrass. The sky is a golden yellow. The sun is strong. Bob Mueller can feel his jaw sharpening. He is far away from the district. He rolls over in the grass which feels like swimming. His hands stretch farther than normal and his feet feel light. He floats toward a tree and looks down at his watch. The numbers blink rhythmically. He clicks his heels together and notices a blue ribbon in a tree. He maneuvers up toward it. The air smells sweet. He reaches for the ribbon, grazing it with his hand. A gentle breeze lifts him toward it. He can touch it. He feels a sense of being late and something else. He should call home. And something else. He looks at the ribbon. There’s a message. “Oh great, just what I need, another message,” he says, only his voice pours out of his mouth like a thick, juicy marmalade. He raises the ribbon to read, but the words remain out of focus. He pulls it closer. Still blurry. He begins to wrap his head in it, starting from his neck up to his nose. He is about to cover the last bit of his face, his eyes, with the ribbon when the last part of the message abruptly comes into focus: “It’s time.”

Hyperallergic: And you can send me dead flowers every morning…
Thomas Nozkowski, “Untitled (9-42)” (2014), oil on linen on panel, 22 x 28″ (55.9 cm x 71.1 cm) (Photograph by Kerry Ryan McFate, courtesy Pace Gallery © Thomas Nozkowski, courtesy Pace Gallery)
The line is from the song “Dead Flowers” by the Rolling Stones. For some reason I began hearing it in my head the other day, while walking around New York. One stanza is addressed to the “queen of the underground.” When is the last time you thought of the Rolling Stones and Persephone in the same breath? Everything is crazy these days, isn’t it? It is the beginning of a new year and for some reason I have been thinking about flower paintings — perhaps prompted by the flower paintings that Edouard Manet made while he was dying. They were done in less than a year.
Manet began them after he finished his last great painting, “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère” (1882), which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1882. With his health rapidly deteriorating, Manet started painting the bouquets of flowers that his friends brought him. He did sixteen in all before he died on April 30, 1883, at the age of fifty-one. In 1932, marking fifty years after Manet’s death as well as the centenary of his birth, which occasioned a large centennial retrospective at the Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris, Henri Matisse said in an interview with the great publisher, Teriade:
Manet is the first painter to have made an immediate translation of his sensations and thus given free rein to instinct, and he was the first to act through his reflexes and thus to simplify the painter’s technique.
In 1961, less than thirty years after Matisse praised Manet, Roy Lichtenstein painted “Black Flowers.” The background of the crisply graphic painting is a field of tiny black dots, applied by hand, mimicking the Ben-Day dots of commercial offset printing. During this period, Lichtenstein painted a number of solitary objects, such as “Keds” (1961) and “Tire” (1962), which were derived from magazine and newspaper advertisements.
Nell Blaine, “Blue Cloth” (1980), oil on canvas, 26 x 22 inches (image courtesy Tibor de Nagy Gallery)
In the summer of 1964, Andy Warhol began working on his silkscreened Flower series, which he would show in his first solo exhibition at Leo Castelli. Like Lichtenstein, Warhol got his images from the mass media, newspaper headlines and ads, as well commercial brands. With the “flower” paintings, he made an exception and took the image from a spread in Modern Photography, which ceased publication in 1989. The June 1964 issue featured three different color variations of a photograph depicting seven hibiscus flowers taken by the magazine’s executive editor Patricia Caulfield. Warhol cut the image into a square, leaving only four of the seven flowers. Initially, he worked on 48 and 24-inch squares, though he would soon add 14, 8, and 5-inch squares to his production. Clearly, he wanted to cover all the bases by appealing to the wealthy and the not so rich. Being loved was important to Warhol.
When Lichtenstein and Warhol mimicked or used mechanical means to depict flowers, there was a strong belief that certain subjects had devolved into clichés, and that nothing new could be done with them. By employing a mechanical style to update their subjects, Lichtenstein and Warhol could distance themselves from them, as well as take on the manner of the impersonal. The cool objectivity of Pop Art had superseded the intense subjectivity of Abstract Expressionism. And yet, that was not all that was going on back then, was it? In 1965, Jane Freilicher painted a small square painting, “Peonies.” In it, she did something that seemed old fashioned and even obsolete to many: she translated her sensations, and did so – often with flowers as subject – for the rest of her life.
Lois Dodd, “Pink Scabiosa, Back View” (2013), oil on panel, 20 x 18 1/4 inches (©Lois Dodd, Courtesy Alexandre Gallery, New York)
In 1952, Lois Dodd and four other artists started the Tanager Gallery. As an artist who considers herself “stingy with paint,” Dodd has painted many idiosyncratic views of flowers. As her title indicates, the artist painted the back view of a flower in “Pink Scabiosa, Back View” (2013). Both Dodd and Freilicher are, in different ways, associated with Painterly Realists, such as Fairfield Porter and Nell Blaine. They were championed by poet-critics, such as Frank O’Hara and John Ashbery, and ignored – if not dismissed – by critics, such as Clement Greenberg and the next generation, which included Barbara Rose, Michael Fried, and Rosalind Krauss. How could you be a serious critic concentrating on the most radical art and write about flower paintings, unless they were done by Lichtenstein or Warhol? If you could not make an artwork that was objective and impersonal, you were out of the game.
Richard Baker, “Tag” (2010), oil on wood, 43 x 17 inches (image courtesy Tibor de Nagy Gallery)
For many years, Richard Baker, who was born in 1959, more than twenty years after Freilicher and Dodd, has painted tulips, the most generic, widely available flower of all, in nondescript vases. In “Tag” (2010), he gives us a relatively straightforward view of a vase of red, yellow and white tulips, some of which are on the brink of wilting and are already bending over. What shifts the painting into another domain is the presence of two strings, which the artist depicts hanging down from the painting’s top edge, with a manila-colored tag affixed to the string on the right. What are we to make of this? Hasn’t Baker figured out how to be impersonal and objective, as well as personal and subjective? Are the lines between objective and subjective really that fixed?
I remember in the late 1960s there were dozens of articles about the death of the novel and then Gabriel Garcia Marquez published 100 Years of Solitude and everyone shut up. That’s not going to happen in the art world, where people are awarded chairs in universities because they and all their acolytes know they are right. When is the last time you heard an art authority – collector, historian, or curator – admit they were wrong about something they put all their money or weight or expertise behind? You might as well be looking for hen’s teeth.
Jane Freilicher, “Peonies” (1965), oil on canvas, 24 x 24 inches (image courtesy Tibor de Nagy Gallery)
Is the subject of flowers and bouquets, to return to Manet, exhausted? Like smoking, is it something that you should not be doing anymore? Another reason why flowers have been on my mind – admittedly, as sappy a subject as you can get – is because of one particular painting, “Untitled (9 – 42)” (2014) by Thomas Nozkowski. The nondescript title is not going convince anyone that it is a bouquet of flowers, and so, as Frank O’Hara advised in “Personism: A Manifesto” (1959), I am going on my “nerve” alone. I don’t see a bouquet of flowers when I look at Nozkowski’s painting, but I do see a painting “about” a bouquet of flowers, a challenge to those who think a subject is dead. Of course, you are entitled to think I am daft, but that is a risk I am happy to take.
The painting’s largest form floats just off-center: It is an irregular blue circle bisected by a black almond-shape that takes up the circle’s lower half. The combination is reminiscent of an eye without a cornea. Five smaller variations of this blue and black form overlap each other while extending out from the larger one. A flat cowl of maroon, yellow, and green bands ascends from a blue and black mound located along the painting’s bottom edge, swelling as it wraps around the large blue and black circle. The grouping of maroon, yellow, and green bands is repeated, with each vertical combination rising to the bottom edges of three of the pinched larger blue and black circles.
Nozkowski achieves his remarkable transfiguration of a familiar, potentially sentimental image – a bouquet of flowers – without resorting to strange or idiosyncratic forms. In fact – from the pinched circles to the pattern of repeated stripes – everything in the painting is familiar. The colors are not weird either. And yet, something miraculous has been made to occur. Nozkowski does something very different: He neither uses style to distance himself from his subject nor relies on idiosyncratic forms or colors to make it “strange” and new. The vase’s combination of blue and black echoes the six blue and black forms, which I have read as “flowers” rising on green, yellow, and maroon stalks. Other than this echo, there is nothing overtly odd about the painting. The flowers are abstract forms divided into two areas, one blue and the other black. The stalks are repeated patterns of stripes. The artist’s clearly delineated rounded forms court the cartoony without crossing into that territory. The traces of stalks on the right underscore the likelihood that the painting is of a bouquet, and yet there is no pictorial assurance that is what the viewer is looking at. We are left looking, and this is what the artist wants: he wants us to gaze without being able to name (and therefore own) what is before our eyes. We are strangers, not in a strange land but in a familiar one.
By showing us the back of the flower or including a sales tag, Dodd and Baker do something along similar lines. In a world where ownership is broadcast daily, from how much a trophy work of art cost at an auction, to a big diamond ring gleaming on Instagram, to showing off the underwear you wear on a private jet, it is imperative to remember that you cannot take it with you, that what you leave behind is what counts.
