Please Hate Me //part 50
Fandom: Marvel
Summary: Based on: “Imagine having a love/hate relationship with Loki.” by @thefandomimagine Who would have thought that babysitting a god could be so much fun?
Genre: slow-burn, enemies to lovers, banter, smut
Tumblr media
Living in an apartment so full of various enchantments that you couldn't move without bumping into one certainly had its perks, but your favourite was the space enhancement that made sure the apartment could actually fit everything you wanted it to.
In their original state, both floors of the apartment weren't small on their own, but as your moving in progressed, you quickly realized that the amount of both your and Loki's belongings overran the space you'd been given.
The solution was pretty standard and required bending only a few minor laws of physics and logic.
Whoever dared venture into your apartment now would get quite the surprise in the form of rooms that felt a little too big for the kind of space indicated by the building's construction, and doors leading to places that absolutely shouldn't be able to fit so close together and yet stubbornly did. But however much you loved the whole apartment in general, you couldn't deny that your absolute favourite part of it was the giant monstrosity of a bathtub that Loki was absolutely uncompromising about.
Laying in it now, you couldn't blame him.
The passage of time was forgotten as the two of you soaked in the scented water, kept warm for what felt like hours, and might've actually been that long. If it was up to you, you would've stayed there forever and enjoyed Loki's firm, warm body, the pleasantly dimmed lights and the few bottles of whatever Loki had hidden for special occasions.
Well, the bottles weren't there originally, but as your clean up progressed and both of you started to feel like something other than a walking biological disaster, a need for celebration rose. You weren't sure how the things progressed from the first bottle to the small pile of them on the floor by the bathtub, but you found yourself straddling Loki's lap, completely drunk and unable to move despite one of your legs going completely numb.
"Remind me to never drink with you again," you mumbled into Loki's neck.
"I did."
"Then be more convincing…"
With your cheek plastered to him, you felt rather than heard Loki's chuckle. The rumble did unruly things to the contents of your stomach.
"I'm gonna puke."
"Please save the last of my dignity and at least aim away from me." Despite Loki's words, he didn't move a bit and if you didn't know him any better, you'd guess he was feeling similar sensations.
With his head leaning on the tub's edge and his eyes closed, Loki was indeed fighting against the world spinning around him. The warm embrace of your body pressed into his and the water scented with jasmine were his only anchors in the chaotic mess his head tried to sort out. Truth be told, he had forgotten the full potential of the Asgardian alcohol, and especially the type he had stored for a perfect occasion. It was like a blow to all his senses, and as much as it was fun, Loki was starting to worry about his ability to ever walk out of that bathtub again. He certainly wouldn't attempt such an insanity now, with you weighing him down, so comfortably settled on his lap that you felt like an integral part of him.
Loki tried, and failed, to convince himself it wasn't an excuse, and a pathetic one too.
"Do you think we're gonna get in trouble?" You asked, as if you knew you were on his mind.
"As petty as Odin is, I don't think he's going to execute us for stealing some alcohol…"
"I meant the stuff Thor was talking about. We kinda messed up the Moon, didn’t we?"
Loki hummed in a way that was definitely not an answer. One of his hands roamed over your exposed back, enjoying the soft curve and warm skin. The other stirred the water, making the soap bubble again and the temperature stay unchanged. Loki had to concentrate more than usual, which was partly because of the amount of alcohol consumed, and partly because his mind was slowly drifting away on soft tendrils of sleep.
"No one knows you there, and I wore my brother's face," Loki finally murmured, leaning his head back. "It'll be fine."
It, unfortunately, didn't know about those predictions, which was why It was interrupted by a certain boy's voice.
"Hey guys, are you okay?" Peter asked from the other side of the door, having let himself into the apartment. Again.
Loki groaned, even as he could feel your smile pressed to his chest.
"We're fine," he said, louder than necessary. He winced as the sound seemed to erode his skull.
"What about Barbara, though?" Peter was insistent. "She's scratching at the window from the outside… and I think she wants those pickles from the table?"
"You locked her outside?" You hissed, trying to look at Loki's completely innocent face, but the sudden movement only resulted in the world tilting to the side dangerously fast.
"I have no idea what you're talking about. I love that bird dearly." Louder, he said to the boy, "She's only allowed to eat them outside!"
"Okay!" The answer was quick and cheerful and mercifully moving away as the boy grabbed the open jar and went outside.
Loki took a deep breath. The blessed silence once again enveloped the apartment. Through the cloud pressing on his hazy thoughts, Loki considered locking the apartment altogether.
Another chilled bottle appeared in his hand, delightfully full and heavy. As much as he had tried to get drunk on Earth's alcohol, only the Asgardian kind seemed to do the job.
The drink burned his throat in precisely the manner he needed. It'd been so long since the two of you had a moment to yourself and could just relax without worrying about a thousand responsibilities. On most days, Loki enjoyed the kind of life he had somehow managed to secure himself. If he decided to be honest, Loki was still rather uncertain how it had happened.
The long, curvy, and annoyingly labyrinthine road that started on the day the Avengers had decided to put him under your wing somehow ended up leading him to where he was now. Not literally, of course - as much as he loved the grand bathtub he had insisted on, Loki had in mind something grander spiritually. A place of comfort, but without the boundaries of a physical space bound to certain conditions and limitations.
A home, but only if it could be a person.
Loki supposed it could. Even as he drank again from the bottle, mudding his thoughts further, the philosophical conclusions he came to still felt right.
Revelations such as these were worthy of sharing, lest they might be forever lost in one's memory. Loki wanted to share the wisdom granted to him by the unholy amount of Asgardian cider, but he had found you plastered to his chest, asleep. And drooling.
Loki made sure the water didn't run cold as he too decided to join you in the dreams' escape. The quiet popping of the soap bubbles and the lavender scent hanging in the air lulled him quickly into a state of complete and utter comfort…
"Brother, where are you hiding?
…from which a rather brutish, and definitely unwelcome voice dragged him away.
Loki started. The contents of a forgotten bottle escaped into the water.
As the heavy steps sounded outside of the bathroom, it was clear the apartment was being searched through again.
You swore. Loki agreed.
"I'm going to," he hiccuped, "change him into a frog."
"Barbara would devour him whole."
"Let them fight. He always prided himself to be a warrior."
Fortunately for Thor, even though he was not aware of the small mercy of the universe, Loki found himself too drunk to act on his words, despite his best attempts at conjuring the transformative spell.
But when his brother's thudding steps neared the bathroom again, with clear intent of dragging Loki out in whatever state he was, Loki was forced to make a very dire decision very quickly, or lest his quiet evening suffer a bitter end.
So Loki did what he had always done best, and spiced the world up with a tiny little trick.
You heard Thor approach the door, but you didn't have it in you to move and at least cover yourself up. The doorknob twisted and you heard it very well through the slight creak it always gave. Then you heard the door open - but it didn't.
Living in an apartment complex had its perks, and being able to hear your neighbors on occasion certainly wasn't one. Still, your gaze turned up when you heard a high-pitched scream and Thor's booming voice coming from the apartment above yours.
"He's going to kill you for that," you said.
"Given the vigor with which he was looking for me, I think he had a hefty list of reasons prepared already."
"That's fair."
As all good things have in common, they always come to a saddening end when you least expect them to. The conclusion that life was utterly unfair in its precipice was a natural one to come up with, even in the state of drunkenness.
"I think it's time for us to go," Loki sighed.
A groan escaped you when the world tilted to the side. Getting out of the bathtub while completely, embarrassingly drunk was a feat that almost resulted in one broken neck and three broken limbs, but somehow both of you managed to scramble your way out. While you searched for clothes that had an annoying habit of duplicating right in front of your eyes, Thor's roars of fury sounded clear through the many walls separating you.
You wondered if any of the neighbours would connect their unexpected guest to you.
You gave up on your search for the other sock and decided to only wear one. Trying to put it on was already hard as it was. "If you spelled all the doors in the building to lead astray, how are we getting out?"
"Don't worry," Loki hiccuped. "My brother dearest is too stupid to notice I didn't touch the windows."
You had never loved anything as much as you loved the walls in your apartment, their quiet support helping you get through the endless expanse of the living room. For reasons you elected to ignore, the swaying of the world only increased as you progressed, bumping into every single piece of furniture some idiot (most likely you the day before) had decided to put there.
"I don't think this is a good idea," you slurred when Loki opened the window, pickleless, owlless and impossibly high.
"Your intuition, my love, is right as always."
Loki managed to put his leg over the windowsill on the second try, which he deemed a great success. He also managed to get down on the other side with no life-threatening injuries, which was just as surprising.
His pride was short-lived when you tumbled down, knocking him off feet.
The few half-melted snowmen seemed to have a good laugh. The little garden was still winter-bare, and no grass cushioned the fall. Barbara, perched on top of Peter's head, hissed with obvious joy.
The boy blinked. "Are you...sneaking out?"
"No," Loki grunted in the same moment you said, "Yes."
Barbara ripped another pickle from the boy's hand. Life was short, especially after you died once, and there was only so much time she deemed worth looking at the two of you. She had far more pressing issues, like the impossibly narrow jar into which her head just wouldn't fit, and so left her reliant on the boy's nimble (and tasty) fingers.
"...are you sure?" The boy watched the two drunkards scramble to stand up.
"We're just out for a walk."
"A long one."
Glass broke upstairs, followed by raised voices and what was undeniably a string of curses.
Loki looked at you. You looked at Loki. Another Loki looked at you. Unable to choose which to make eye contact with, you squinted and the two Lokis merged together—damn you were never drinking again. There was no way all of you would sneak out in time.
Barbara ripped another pickle to shreds.
"Hey, Peter," you cooed sweetly. "Do you happen to know a quiet little place to lay low for a while, my darling?"
Peter, the darling, did.

A/N: Hi! I'm sorry for no chapter last week, my university is going to kill me with that graduation paper I have to work on and reasearch and realize how little do I actually know about the subject I have to get a 70-pages long paper done. Heh.
But don't worry, this story is slowly nearing its end, and even though I have little time to work on new chapters, I'm doing my best and hope you'll enjoy them. Well, my life's pretty busy right now, and it stresses me out, so I'm not sure how regular the updates will be, but I promise, I'm not giving up on this story. I'm so happy about all the support I have received for this story, and grateful for all the comments it got! Hope you enjoyed this chapter too!

Me and my friends are lonely - Spencer
It started out as a music blurb based on a song i’ve listened to since i was a teenager but it turned into something more. I just kept writing and this is what came to be... I really needed to get this out of my system i guess. bc we want to take care of spencer so... yeah.
Song: Me and my friends are lonely - Matt Maeson
Warnings: Okay so the whole conversation revolves around death (maeve referrence but it’s spence x reader). If you’re not in the headspace to read that, I suggest you don’t read it. No one actually dies and there’s nothing graphic but yeah. proceed with caution.
_____________
“Do you ever feel like you’re going to die alone?” Spencer asked, staring up at the stars.
The two of you were on the roof of his apartment complex, having a picnic. It started out as a ritual the two of you did to get him out of the house without going anywhere after Maeve and now, it was something you regularly did whenever one of you was feeling down. Even as just friends, before it turned into something more, the two of you just established something special with the picnics.
“Jesus, Spencer. Isn’t the point of these picnics to remind you that you aren’t alone?” You said. Laying on your back, you turned your head to look at him. God he was so beautiful… You couldn’t help but smile.
“Yeah but… What if we don’t work out? What if you leave? What if…” Spencer's breath hitched. “What if something happens to you when I’m not here and I’m back where I started… Alone…”
“Spence, come on. You can’t think like that.” You said, sighing.
“Why not? I’m being realistic. My line of work isn’t something simple like working at a bookstore or a barista or a fucking-”
“Watch it.” You said, making sure to keep Spencer in check about what he would say next.
Spencer could be a little insensitive at times when he wasn’t thinking about what he was saying at the time he said it. You tried to develop a tougher skin so it didn’t bother you when he did say certain things because you knew he wasn’t saying it to hurt you, he was just saying what was on his mind. Still, you tried to remind him that not everyone can handle facts like you can.
“Sorry. But my point is there are horrible people everywhere who I have helped put away. People that want to hurt me and you and whoever is close to me. People I’m a little bit scared of because they are the prime examples of the loss of humanity that can happen to anyone. I have nightmares of being alone, adding you to another list of people I have loved and lost.” Spencer went quiet.
“You’re long winded, Spencer. Do you ever breathe?” You said, a tear streaming down your face. He had good points, all things you had thought about before with the roles reversed.
“I find that when I use my diaphragm instead of my lungs to control my breath, much like singing, then I’m able to recite a longer string of words without losing my place.” He looked over at you, completely straight faced.
“I was joking but that’s good to know.” You looked back at him.
“I don’t want anything to happen to you…” He whispered.
A tear slipped down, dropping onto the blanket.
“Nothing will happen to me, Spence.” You said, whispering as well.
“You don’t know that. We can’t predict the probability that you will remain safe. Look at Hotch and Haley. He couldn’t save her. If Hotch couldn’t, what makes you think…” More tears ran down his face.
“Well that’s the point. You can’t use statistics to get out of this one. You can’t predict everything, Spencer, and this is just something that we can’t focus on because I believe that it will manifest itself. But you know what?”
“What?” Spencer asked, holding back tears.
“Whatever happens to me, I had the time of my life with you by my side. Spencer, you have made me the happiest person alive ever since you breezed into my life. I wouldn’t want to have night picnics with anyone else. I wouldn’t want to dream about kids and a house with anyone else. I wouldn’t want to die in anyone else’s arms. And that’s morbid but I trust you. I trust that you will be there in my final moments. I know you and you wouldn’t let the story end there.” You were holding back tears yourself.
“It doesn’t make sense.” Spencer sat up, pulling his knees to his chest.
“What doesn’t, babe?” You said, sitting up as well.
“The dreams. The dreams don’t make sense. This doesn’t make sense.” He dropped his head between his knees.
You crawled around the picnic basket, thankful that the blanket was softening the gravel on your knees. It would hurt even more if it wasn’t there. You pulled him into your lap to lay down and he loosened up a little bit. Putting your hand on his arm, rubbing it softly.
“What dreams? Are you having nightmares again?” You scrunched your eyebrows together. He was supposed to tell you when he had bad dreams.
“Yes… I didn’t want you to worry. You worry about me a lot more than you should and it worries me that you worry about me. I’m not a kid. Logically, I should be able to take care of myself with something so simple.” He sighed.
“Is that why you’ve been pulling more hours at the office? Being up at odd hours when you text me? You don’t have to close yourself off when bad shit happens.” You started playing with his hair and he closed his eyes.
“I can’t figure out what to do. It’s a version of the same dream. And it’s always you and…” Another tear.
“Spencer, please just open up. I promise not to go anywhere.” You pushed his hair out of his eyes so you could make eye contact with him.
“I can’t. I can’t do it. I can’t choose. She always makes me choose between you and Maeve. And I can’t make a decision. I can’t choose one of you. I can’t choose. And she never takes me. I’d rather die than choose between the two of you.”
Spencer was crying hard. You didn’t know what to say. You knew it was bad with how dark the circles under his eyes were but you never asked details because you wanted him to come to you. The two of you didn’t force anything in the relationship, no matter how painful it was to watch the other suffer. You asked if he was okay along the way but he didn’t want to talk about it so you didn’t push anything.
“Spencer, you have to breathe. You’re going to pass out.” You said, trying to calm him down. He sat up, curling back into himself.
You just wrapped your arms around him and held him until he was able to breathe again. You hated to see him like this but this is what happened when it built up within him: the dam broke and all the tears came rushing out.
“Can you breathe again?” You said, grabbing a paper towel from behind you so he would blow his nose.
“Yeah… I’m sorry. I didn’t think I would lose it like that…” He was quiet, sniffling but he was all cried out.
“No, it’s good. You needed to get it out of your system. That was heavy stuff.” You said, putting your head on his shoulder and rubbing his back.
“She was alive. In 5 minutes, her life ends…” A couple more tears rolled down his face but he patted them away with the paper towel. “You probably think I’m crazy… Hung up on a dead girl…”
“No, baby. I don’t think you’re crazy for that. I think you’re crazy for dating me but not that.” You made him chuckle.
“You make me sane….” He said a little louder.
“But really, I think you’re processing. You’re still grieving. That’s some hard shit to go through and it’s not something you just get over, especially not a year later.” You paused.
“I can’t choose... You both changed me in different ways and I’m not who I am without either of you. I’d rather die than be without either of you. And there’s already one that slipped away so…” His sigh was shaky but you continued to rub his back and slowly, his body was relaxing.
“Spencer, I didn’t know I meant that much to you…” You were quiet this time, in disbelief.
He turned to look at you. “You mean all of that and more. I can’t imagine my life without you.”
“I don’t want you to stop living if I ever leave the world. I need you to promise me that you will continue fighting, okay? I need to hear that from you.” You said, eyes meeting his. God they were so beautiful, even under the shitty yellow light above the two of you and the moonlight.
“I can’t promise that and you know it.” He whispered.
“Spencer…”
You were both quiet. There was something lingering in the air, a somber feeling. You wanted to kiss him so badly, make it go away. You wanted to just go for it but this wasn’t the time. It would lead to something more and he wasn’t in the right headspace. You needed to get back to where you were before: the picnic.
“Do you want to finish the picnic? I think you need some energy after all of that and we can even cuddle.” You said, still so close to his face.
“Okay.” He whispered.
You dropped your head to break eye contact and a moment later he kissed you on the forehead.
“I love you.” He said for the first time.
“I love you.” You said, hoping he knew you meant it with all of your heart.

2.43 S1 Chapter 1.7 - Young Yunichika
7. (COOL BUT WORST) PLAYMAKER
Tumblr media
Translation Notes
1. The term used here, 球威, means “pitcher’s stuff”, which basically refers to how effective a pitch is at being the pitch it’s supposed to be
2. Refers to the popular myth/saying/action that writing the character for “person” on your hand and then pretending swallowing it will relieve stress
3. Some neat wordplay here. アタッカー並み means on par with an attacker, but 並みのアタッカー means average attacker
Previous || Index || Next
He felt like he could see Haijima’s smug face painted on the raised set. It was after the opponent blocker fell for the decoy in front of the net and jumped. Kuroba jumped in from behind the decoy with a back-row attack. From the point of view of the opponent blocker, a new shadow suddenly shot out from above the decoy’s head. This was the combination they were best at, called a pipe attack, and it should have been already analyzed by the opponent, but it felt great to be given a face of astonishment that said, “How did you appear there!?” every time. This is the moment when I’m the coolest one on the court.
Haijima’s sets were completely different than his senpai setter’s sets from last year. Kuroba still couldn’t explain it in theory, but even though his senpai’s sets were a big arch that “went up and fell down,” Haijima’s sets “didn’t fall down.” The ball was thrown “straight” to the place where it could only be reached by stepping in the fastest, jumping the highest and swinging his arms at the highest point. If he didn’t stop it, it would just whoosh past him. In practice, he constantly missed the timing and missing the ball, which ended into arguments. While he became reckless everyday, desperate to stop the ball next time for sure—a strange phenomenon occurred today.
As long as he jumped and swung his arms with all strength, the ball would be there. The sets fitted into his hands so cleanly, like they were sticking to his hands, that there was not even a millimeter of deviation. All he had to do was to add power and hit it out with a nice feeling. He cut through the gaps in the opponents’ defense, who were unable to take a step, and landed after seizing the ball with his eyes until it pierced the court. “Yes!” he pumped his arm into the air, still on his knees.
“Yuni!”
“You were so cool!”
While his gathered teammates messed up his hair, he searched for Haijima. He caught a glimpse of Haijima, who was always on the outside of circles like these. Haijima smiled thinly and nodded.
The rotation moved once, and Kuroba came up to the front row right after he did a back-row attack in the back row. When Haijima went down from the front row to serve in exchange, they exchanged a low high-five as they passed each other.
July 26th. The first round of the boys’ volleyball division for the Prefectural Middle School Summer Games, taking place on the two courts of A and B in the Suzumu City Municipal Gymnasium. In the first game on Court A, Monshiro Middle already took the first set. For the second set, the other side came close in the middle of the game because of a disordered receive, but they didn’t allow them to form a comeback and extended a wide lead again to close out the set. It was a three-set match, so if they took this set, they would have a straight-set win.
Haijima moved back considerably in the service zone, almost to the wall, and got into the serve position. He put the ball in his left hand and extended his arm straight out in front of him. His narrow eyes were narrowed even more sharply and he stared at the other side of the net with a fixed gaze. For a moment, the stands that were cheering loudly fell deathly silent. Everyone held their breaths at the clear, intimidating something Haijima was clad in.
Taking just one second to lightly adjust his breathing, he tossed the ball up high without any perceivable jump and hit a powerful jump serve from a beautiful, textbook-like form. The gym became filled with cheers that bordered on roars once again.
But it was a bit too long. It’s out—Kuroba could see it in his eyes, but there was no time for the receiver to avoid it. The ball bounced up all the way to the ceiling with such tremendous power (1) that the receiver nearly fell over.
Ah——.
His body moved naturally before he could think about it, and he jumped. Above the net, he caught hold of the ball that returned directly and knocked it down to the opponent’s court.
⋆﹥━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━﹤⋆
Since sixteen schools participated in the first round, the passages behind the gym were crowded with players in jerseys of all sorts of colors, teachers, and management staff.
“Somehow while I was in a daze…”
“We won!”
“With a team of only eight people!”
“Yuni, you reacted well to that direct one.”
“Well, I guess. For some reason, I feel like I can see the ball really well today. Also, when I see the opponent’s faces, I somehow know what they’re gonna do.”
“What the hell’s that, that sounds cool. I’m falling for you!”
“We should have talked to the girls from class more. All I could hear was the moms’ voices.”
“Agh, I was switching the moms’ voices with the girls’ voices in my head, but you just dragged me back to reality!”
Having finished their match in good time, everyone was still in good spirits, and there was a constant stream of excited chatter. It seemed that the match that started at the same time in Court B was carried over to the third set, so muffled cheers and the sound of the ball bouncing could be heard. When he wondered why this extremely stupid conversation never ended, he realized that it was because Haijima wasn’t there to chop through the mood. He was supposed to be with them when they left the court, but…
Their advisor, who had said he was going to drop by the management headquarters, came back just then.
“Sensei, do you know where Haijima is?”
“He went back inside. The second match in Court A is about to start soon. He said that he’s going to go watch it since it’ll decide who we face in the second round.”
“Eh…He didn’t have to go alone.”
If it’s for our next opponent, then shouldn’t we all go scouting them out, not just Haijima? A tinge of dissatisfaction sprouted in his heart as he thought that he should have at least called out to them.
“Didn’t Haijima want to give you guys a break because he was worried? You’re fine now, but if you get too excited, you won’t enough energy for the second round.”
Haijima worried about them? It was a phenomenon that seemed like it wouldn’t happen even if the heavens and earth were turned upside-down. It was exactly a phenomenon. It was equal to a natural disaster that only happened once every few hundred million years or so.
But, it was true that playing two games in one day was unfamiliar terrain for them. Although everyone seemed to be in good condition right now, it was hard to predict how tired they would be in the second game.
“But, you know, I knew Haijima had volleyball experience, but I didn’t expect him to be that good. Even when I stopped by the headquarters earlier, teachers from other schools kept coming up to me and asking who that player was.”
“Hey, what about me? They didn’t ask about me?”
“Hmm? They didn’t.”
“Tch. My efforts always get overshadowed by Haijima.”
When he pouted and grumbled that, he was soothed with “You’ve got this from now on.”
“Keep this up for the second round. Don’t get too worked up about it and just have fun with everyone.”
He thought he was in good form and stood out quite a bit, but he guessed that Haijima’s skill was so outstanding that his own level wasn’t enough to leave an impression. He couldn’t believe that he was getting noticed by the volleyball team advisors from other schools, who was probably much more discerning than their own advisor.
“We’re gonna win”—Haijima was extremely confident, but at the same time, he was a realist. He never gave lenient assessments to himself or others, and he wasn’t the type of guy who would say soft and easy effort goals like “It would be nice if we could win.” He said that back then because he had a serious expectation that was possible.
He had a feeling now that it really might not be a dream if Haijima was there.
If they won four times, they won the championship. They had already cleared one match. Three more to go.
We can…reach it…?
I want to win, he thought. I want to win next time too. And after that. And then if we win after that—. When he heard it in June, he felt a lot of bewilderment, but now for the first time, he definitely wanted to win. His heart began to beat fast.
***
Right when they entered the venue since the time for the second round’s official practice was approaching, cheers similar to an angry roar rose up, and the entire team leaned back in the same direction despite themselves.
A horizontal banner—which wasn’t there in the first round—with the words “Monshiro Middle School Boys’ Volleyball Team” written with excessively good handwriting was hanging from the second-row bleachers. And next to that, there was a square flag with “Spread your wings! Kuroba UNIVERSE!”
His face turned hot.
“Wow. Yuni’s cheering squad is amazing.”
“It’s like we’re at Koshien.”
His teammates were more taken aback and put off rather than being jealous. Their parents formed a small cheering squad for the first round, but it was just a modest thing where they cheered for their children on the spot, with no bells and whistles or anything else. The huge cheering party that newly appeared completely swallowed that up, sounding their megaphones loudly and as for his relatives, they were shouting in voices that couldn’t be called refined.
“…That’s Grandpa’s writing.”
On a pure-white cloth, the words “Monshiro Middle School Boys’ Volleyball Team” were written in bold, stirring letters like a rampaging dragon in all black ink. Come to think of it, when he went out this morning, his mother was in a hurry making phone calls to here and there. It would have been better if his family had just come here modestly instead of taking the time to organize something like that and be late for the first round.
The other one, “Spread your wings! Kuroba UNIVERSE!”, had a black background and decorated with sparkly gold tinsel, and it was a lot more lowbrow than his grandfather’s single brush stroke. Right above where that deathly embarrassing flag—which he thought of as more like harassment—was hanging, he saw Itoko shouting into a huge megaphone. …If she had the time to prepare that, she could have come for the first round. You should have seen that really nice back-row attack in the first round.
Yorimichi…didn’t seem to have come. He couldn’t spot him as far as he could see. He was sure he would have heard that there was a game today through Itoko.
“Oh, Haijima, your grandma came. I wonder if my mom also invited her.”
He tugged on Haijima’s uniform and whispered that into his ear. “Huh…” Haijima didn’t look all that happy as he looked up at the stands, straining his eyes as a wrinkle formed between his brows.
“Can’t see her.”
“Right there. She’s above ‘team.’”
“Even with contacts, my eyes aren’t as good as yours. It’s fine.”
He immediately gave up and returned his eyes to the court.
“Concentrate, Kuroba.”
He said in a low tone. He can see Haijima’s consciousness narrowing and condensing. As though saying that the world he needed only existed inside that nine-by-eighteen-meter court, he raised his awareness by shutting out outside gazes and cheers. He could feel that the power of his concentration that made his skin tingle just by being next to him.
“Y-Yeah. Got it.”
Kuroba responded vigorously with all his might, but even if he took his eyes off the stands, he couldn’t get rid of the feeling of being surrounded his relatives’ faces, faces, faces from 360 degrees.
The rotation started with Haijima on the right back as the server and Kuroba “diagonal” to him on the left front. The rotation was made so that Haijima, who was strong at serving, got to serve as much as possible, and either one of the tall Kuroba and Haijima was always in the front row. There were six people, so there were three pairs of players connected by diagonal lines, and one’s partner was called one’s “diagonal.” The diagonal relationship was always maintained even when the rotation moved. However, when he became absentminded, he sometimes lost track of his current position, which was quite confusing.
Back-row players weren’t allowed to jump up to block, and they could only spike by doing a back-row attack from behind the attack line (the line three meters from the net).
As though saying that victory went to the one who made the first move, Haijima smashed in a jump serve with all his might from the very beginning. A jump serve was hit with a lot of force, and consequently had a high risk of error. In practice games, Haijima used a low-risk jump float serve, but right when he wondered what he was going to do in the official match today, he was actively using a jump serve.
Regrettably, it went behind the end line and was out, giving their opponent their first point, but the air in the opposing court was frozen for a moment.
“Don’t worry about it!”
His teammates called out to him, but Haijima didn’t seem to care about the mistake in the first place and unashamedly responded lightly with one hand, staring over the net with a brazen expression as though that was his substitute for a greeting. Even though it didn’t result in a point, he had successfully planted the seed of fear in them that made them think, “What would happen if that had gone in?”—Their amount of experience was different by one or two orders of magnitude. And more than anything, the fearsomeness of Haijima was that he had such nerves of steel.
Haijima was making the game in a literal sense. As a setter, he didn’t just set up his teammates’ offensive, but also controlled the mood in the opponent’s court. He of course knew that the difference between their amounts of experience couldn’t be filled in overnight, but he felt strangely impatient.
He felt like it took an awfully long time for his own first serve order to come around. He impatiently waited for the rotation to move, and when he went down into the service zone and was about to receive the ball,
“…ba! Kuroba!”
Haijima’s voice burst into his ear, and he jumped. He was so out of it that he didn’t hear him, as though there was a membrane around his head. He looked and saw Haijima pointing to the right position of the front row with an unusually anxious look on his face.
The color drained out of his face. The rotation was wrong. He was in the front row for one more time. Nagato, who was in the original service order, was standing confused in a halfway place.
“S-sorry.”
“No, it’s my fault too. I thought I got it wrong when Yuni moved back…”
He talked to Nagato and hurried back to his defensive position. Haijima was about to go to him to say something, but the whistle prompting Nagato to serve sounded. The cheering squad was noisy in the stands, probably because they didn’t understand why the server was suddenly changed.
Something’s wrong…I can hear the voices from the stands well, but the voices on the court are distant. He almost felt like he was standing in the bleachers right now, not on the court.
He felt the rotation was moving quickly, contrary to earlier. His sense of time wasn’t stable. The wrong service order came around this time, and he ran to the serve zone and received the ball. He stood facing the net and took a deep breath to try to calm down, but couldn’t breathe in deeply.
Haijima’s first jump serve suddenly replayed in his mind. Kuroba also practiced the jump serve. He was getting able to hit the ball squarely more and more, and practice could be exhilarating sometimes. It would no doubt feel good to carry out that kind of thing successfully in a game. He would be able to show the cheering squad his good points, but of course his accuracy was not yet usable, so he made sure to do a jump float serve as usual…
Huh? Which foot do I usually step forward with? What’s the timing for the toss? What’s ‘usual’?
His usual way of doing things had completely slipped out of his mind.
Beep—.
The whistle sounded.
He didn’t immediately understand what the signal meant. Something was wrong. His own court was in a panic. After the referee showed the opposing team’s score, he made an “8” sign with his fingers.
An eight second violation!?
The spectators were buzzing once again about the point loss that was difficult to understand to the layman’s eye. If you didn’t serve within eight seconds after the whistle sounded, your opponent scored. It wasn’t like he didn’t hear the first whistle. And yet, he himself had absolutely no idea why he made such a basic mistake.
Haijima made a hand gesture towards the bench, and the advisor, who received it, hurriedly requested a timeout.
⋆﹥━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━﹤⋆
“You’re nervous, aren’t you.”
Haijima poked him above his heart with his fist. He didn’t seem angry, but he was definitely fed up. A series of careless mistakes that had nothing to do with the play itself.
“Do you have stage fright or something?”
“Ugh… I’ve never really been in a situation where I’ve gotten stage fright, so I don’t know.”
Was he nervous? He was aware that he was overly concerned with unnecessary things. During the first round, he was able to see the court so well and concentrate on his own task. He knew what he should do without thinking about it and his body moved. It was as if he was being made use of by being incorporated as a part of the organic matter that was the game Haijima finished weaving. He wasn’t displeased with that at all; rather, he felt euphoric. And yet, after they entered the second round, that feeling suddenly stopped, his field of vision abruptly narrowed, and only the voices in his mind increased.
Haijima sighed at him.
“Write down ‘people’ and swallow it.” (2)
“Can’t, can’t you give better advice?”
“I’ve never been nervous. I could tell you all about play, though.”
He felt like he was being shown the disparity between them again. “Can’t be helped, Yuni. If that many of my relatives came, I’d get nervous too. Don’t worry about mistakes.” Though everyone else encouraged him, the sigh Haijima alone had given him weighed heavily on him.
The thirty second timeout went by in the blink of an eye. In the end, he noisily dashed back to the court without putting his feelings in order.
Anyways, there was nothing to do but to recover from here. Right when he moved back to the rear, he immediately got a gesture for a pipe attack from Haijima. It was a fast back-row attack from the middle using the center’s A-quick as a decoy, which was the source of their points in the first round. The shocked face of the opposing blocker who was drawn in by the decoy and jumped at it when he jumped in from over the center’s head was so satisfying—.
“!?”
This time he kept blocking. The do-or-die expression of the opposing blocker appeared from the other side of the net that was like a towering wall, blocking the course. How—!? The ball crashed straight onto the block and was knocked down onto his own side. While falling on his behind from the excess momentum, words such as “What?” came out of his mouth.
As he let his mind wander for a moment and stared at the opposing court, where there were fervent roars, from beneath the net, his teammate was held out in front of him. After he borrowed that hand and stood up, he reflexively drew back his hand when he saw that it was Haijima.
“Sorry.”
An apology slipped out of his mouth. For what? Getting blocked? Drawing back his hand?
“It’s fine. There was no helping that. They’ve already guessed that you’re the only one who could hit it properly. We should have marked them thoroughly.”
Haijima seemed to have accepted the former’s apology. His eyes never left the opponent’s court, where they were exchanging high-fives and celebrating, and spoke quickly. If the only decent hitter was Kuroba, and he was marked for it…then what were they going to do?
Haijima gave him a sharp side glance. He looked fed up again.
“I told you not to let it show on your face… Shake off the guy blocking you as much as possible. However, don’t think you’re not being marked, stay calm and watch the block. I told you about straight and cross. They’re not at a level where you can’t get rid of them.”
Well, from Haijima’s level, middle school volleyball in a rural prefecture like this would seem like a piece of cake. The prefectural finals in a place like this was probably the same size as a subdivision preliminary in Tokyo. It was no consolation for him, as it only deepened his inferiority complex.
⋆﹥━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━﹤⋆
Haijima scattered his sets to other attackers, but Kuroba always had a block on him whether he hit or not. The opponent seemed to think that as long as Kuroba was suppressed, the rest of the team couldn’t hit too hard, so they could respond with receives. Unfortunately, it was an effective strategy.
Although the team was able to score some modest points with Haijima’s skillful direction, they still were unable to score consecutively due to the lack of a decisive blow. The seesaw game where stress accumulated continued. No, in terms of overall team morale, the flow was completely on the other side. There were more and more situations where the receives were so disordered that even Haijima had trouble covering them, and when he couldn’t get the set, the rest of the team couldn’t do anything.
Far from regaining his composure, Kuroba was experiencing the sensation of gears steadily becoming less and less aligned. Even though his mind was panicking, his body wouldn’t work together with it. It was like his head and body were doing on their own thing on this side and the other side of the court. While his spike success rate had decreased, moreover, at the beginning there were many times where he would slam the ball into a block and get shut-out, and it became noticeable that he was making the mistake of getting it caught in the net himself, let alone hitting the ball into the blocking.
“Just stop looking at the blocks. It’s better not to. Don’t think about avoiding them, just hit it where it’s easy to hit.”
Haijima pulled on his uniform and whispered that, but he was only extra confused by the change in instructions. Didn’t he say “Watch their blocks” earlier?
Did my jump power go down? Aren’t my legs getting tired? The instant he realized that this is what it was to play two games in a day, his body suddenly became heavy. Are my knees okay? Don’t I feel more burdened than usual? He suddenly started to worry about the growing pains that should have been unrelated to this. What if that thing that hurts so much I couldn’t sleep at night hits me during the match? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do——?
Haijima was saying something from his diagonal position to him. But he couldn’t hear his voice. He could probably hear him physically, but his heart was blocking his ears. Listening to Haijima’s just reasonings now was of no use whatsoever.
Do you, who's completely disconnected from nervousness or agitation, have the words that I want, the words that will help me? I don’t think so.
He didn’t remember at what point—Haijima turned away with a look of resignation on his face. Ah, if Haijima has given up, then this was already a complete loss, he thought.
For some reason, only a small click of his tongue and the word “useless” reached his ears without being cut off.
***
“Get in line, Yuni.”
It was only when Nagato called out to him that he realized that the game was over. A smattering of applause came down from the stands. When he absentmindedly looked at the score board that was still standing on the court, he saw that the set count was 2-0, and the winner—Monshiro Middle School.
…Wait, what? Did something…happen…? I have almost no memory of touching the ball…
Even when he looked over the faces of his teammates standing in a line along the end line, he didn’t actually feel like they had won at all. Were these really the faces of a winning team? The atmosphere was not as merry as it had been when they won the first round, and everyone looked somewhat apathetic and subdued. And maybe it was just his imagination, but the applause from the stands seemed like it was just done out of politeness.
When he was about to line up next to Haijima, who was standing there with his expression erased, he recalled it along with the flashbacks of some scenes—it was all Haijima's doing.
Haijima’s play changed after that tongue click and badmouthing.
The jump serve was of course incredible, but Haijima’s original domain was at the net. At the net, the control of the ball was not passed over to anyone—neither opponents nor even his own teammates. Rather than entrusting the set to the attacker, the cases where he hit the ball by himself by performing dumps increased dramatically. A dump was a surprise attack where the setter pretended to set the ball and returned it to the opponent’s court with their left hand, but the power of the dump released from the left hand of the ambidextrous Haijima was not confined to the level of a surprise attack. He smashed it into the opposing court with the same power as an attacker spiking with all of their strength. It should have temporarily made the opponents agitated and close the score gap considerably.
However, it was from there that Haijima showed his demon-like true power. When the opponent marked his dumps and started to block it, he switched from hitting hard to deliberately hitting the ball lightly at the head of the block where they jumped with power in preparation for a strong hit to make it drop to his own side. He pulled off the feat of getting down low to pick up the rebound that gently dropped down without a moment’s delay and swinging it to a nearby teammate with an underhand pass and the instructions “Give it to me!” This time, he used his right hand to smash the ball that was set to him by his panicking teammate into the opponent’s side.
The venue was stunned by the powerful spike that was on par with an attacker’s, or even stronger than an average attacker’s (3), and even the referee’s whistle was a beat late.
How was he able to do that…? It was technical, but more than that, what kind of nerves did he had that enabled him to play in a way that overturned the foundation of team sports like that in front of people?
To be honest, Haijima, you’re…disgusting.
When he heard “Thank you,” he hurriedly matched them in a small voice and bowed. For an instant, he felt as if the shadow of Haijima standing next to him broke out of its human shell and swelled up into a warped shape, and a shiver ran down his spine.

After Monty’s attempt at contacting the Ark had fried all of our wristbands, I found myself sat by the fire, staring into it blankly.
The first person I thought about was my mother. If she didn’t know before the dropship descended, she had to have found out soon after. She was probably second in charge, keeping an eye on our vitals. Did she think I was dead? Or, was she still holding onto hope? My mind then drifted to my father, whom I was sure would have accepted that I was gone for good. Finally, I thought of my grandmother, who probably still had no idea what was going on. It wasn’t like she visited me often, usually too busy tending to the Last Tree.
As I thought of my family, slowly beginning to accept that I’d never see them again, Fox’s voice grabbed my attention.
“Guys, look!”
I turned my head, following her finger pointed up at the Sky.
“A shooting star?” Another delinquent asked.
Suddenly, the “star” began to light up, a ring of fire surrounding it. “That’s not a shooting star.” I mumbled, standing up. “It’s a pod.”
Octavia quickly came to my side. “Do you think it’s from the Ark?”
“Bellamy, get out here!” Fox called out.
Bellamy soon emerged from his tent, shirtless with Roma and Bree following behind him. “What’s going on?”
“They’re coming to help us,” Jones smiled. “Now we can finally kick some grounder ass!”
“Please tell me they brought down shampoo,” Roma quipped.
I rolled my eyes, moving closer to Bellamy with Octavia following close behind. “What’s the plan?”
Bellamy looked around before letting out a sigh. He led a few of us towards our main tent. It wasn’t long before the few of us had put together a plan.
“If it cleared the ridge it’s probably near the lake,”
“We’re ready to go,” Octavia said.
“No one’s going anywhere. Not while it’s dark, it isn’t safe.” Bellamy replied. “We’ll head out at first light.”
Mumbles ensued as most of the group piled out of the tent. I watched as Octavia stepped in front of Bellamy, stopping him from leaving. “What if the Grounders get to it first? Bell, we should go now.”
“Octavia’s right,” I said. “We can’t afford to lose any supplies they might’ve sent down here in that pod.”
Bellamy’s face tensed. “I said we wait until sunrise.”
As he pushed past Octavia and exited the tent, the two of us exchanged a worried glance. “He’s hiding something.” I finally said.
Octavia nodded. “He’s definitely hiding something.”
I spent the majority of the rest of the night waiting for Clarke and Finn to return, them having left camp not long after the wristbands had fried. Finally I noticed them heading through the newly built gate, looking around frantically.
Standing from the log I was sat on, I made my way across camp, reaching them just as Fox had.
“Looks like everyone’s up,” Finn remarked.
“Did you guys see it?” Fox asked. “It had to have been from the Ark, right?”
Clarke nodded. “Grab your stuff. We’re gonna go find out.”
I shook my head. “Bellamy said we have to wait until sunrise.”
“Where is he?” Clarke asked, as I pointed to his tent.
Clarke made her way towards Bellamy’s tent, Finn and I following close behind. She pushed the flaps of the tent to the side, being the first of the three of us to step inside.
“Ever hear of knocking, Bitch?” I heard Roma speak from inside the tent. When she noticed Finn and I enter behind Clarke, her face tensed even further. “Oh, great, it’s a free show. Anyone else want to take a look?” She was sitting in the cot with Bree, both of them attempting to cover themselves with a makeshift blanket. Bree was quiet, slowly sinking further under the blanket.
“Where the hell is Bellamy?” Clarke asked.
“He took off a while ago.”
Finn looked around the tent. “His gear is gone.”
Clarke shook her head. “He told everyone to stay here. Whatever is in that pod, he wants it. We’ve got to get there before he does.”
Clarke and Finn quickly exited the tent, causing Roma to roll her eyes. “You’re welcome!”
I smiled nervously, slowly backing out of the tent. “Sorry about that.”
After exiting the tent, I jogged to catch up with Clarke and Finn, who were almost at the gate already.
“I should’ve known he’d go for that radio,” Clarke mumbled.
Finn raised an eyebrow. “How were you supposed to know something like that?”
“He’s spent every single minute since we landed making sure no one on the Ark finds out that we’re alive,” Clarke responded. “Of course he’d make a run for that pod before anyone else got a chance.”
“You can’t always predict what people are going to do,” I spoke up.
Clarke shook her head. “That’s exactly what I have to do to keep us all safe. I screwed up, let myself get distracted.” He glanced at Finn for a moment, before looking ahead once more. “I won’t let that happen again.”
We had been searching for hours, with no luck, before the sun finally came up. Clarke and I separated from Finn, hoping to have better luck in locating the pod in groups. As Clarke and I stepped into a clearing, we saw the pod sitting next to a tree. Clarke wasted no time, rushing over to it and yanking the door open.
I found myself behind her, staring into the pod over her shoulder. Inside was a girl, not much older than us, her hand placed on top of the wound on her forehead.
“Oh, my god.” Clarke breathed.
The girl looked at us, her eyes wide. “I made it?”
Clarke and I nodded in unison.
The girl struggled to pull herself free from the pod, Clarke and I helping her regain her balance. Finally, she stepped away from the pod, slowly walking through the leaves on the ground. A smile appeared on her face as she began spinning around.
“I dreamed it would smell like this,” The girl said, noticing the drops of water falling upon her bare arm. “Is this rain?”
Clarke smiled. “Welcome home.”
“Raven?”
Clarke and I spun around, spotting Finn who had just stepped through the bushes. His eyes were wide, his face as pale as a ghost.
“Finn!” Raven called out, rushing over to him. The two kissed for a moment, before Raven pulled back. “I knew you couldn’t be dead.”
“You’re bleeding.” Finn spoke, running his thumb along the cut.
Raven winced, though maintained her smile. “Right now, I don’t care.”
“How did you get here?”
“You know the big scrap hold? On K deck?”
Finn nodded, eying the pod behind Clarke and I. “You built that from scrap?”
“I kind of rebuilt it,” Raven spoke, earning a laugh from Finn. “What, like it’s hard? It just needed a couple of parts and some love.”
“You’re insane.”
“I’d do more for you, and worse. Just like you would for me.” As the words left Raven’s lips, her legs gave out, Finn quickly grabbing her arms.
“Come sit,” Finn spoke, leading her to a rock. He removed his jacket and draped it around her, before eying her cut one last time. “Let me get you something for that.”
Finn rushed over to Clarke, who quietly handed him an ice pack. He frowned, noticing her eyes were scanning every inch of the forest, except for where he stood. “I’m sorry.” He mumbled.
Clarke looked at him, her eyes shifting to me for just a moment before landing back on the ground. “Let’s not talk about this.”
Finn looked over at me before nodding, rushing back over to Raven.
I watched Clarke’s expression change over and over again. “Are you okay?” I finally asked.
Clarke didn’t speak, simply nodding before heading over to Finn and Raven. “She needs to put pressure on her wound.”
“This is Clarke,” Finn spoke. “And this is Athena.”
Raven’s eyes lit up. “Clarke Griffin?”
Clarke nodded.
“This was all because of your mom.”
“My mom?”
Raven nodded. “This was all her plan. We were trying to come down here together. If we waited-” She trailed off, her face growing pale. “Oh, my God. We couldn't wait because the council was voting whether to kill three hundred people to save air.”
“When?” I asked.
“Today. We have to tell them you guys are alive!” Raven stood from the rock, rushing over to her pod. “The radio's gone. It must've gotten loose during reentry. I should've strapped it to the A-strut. Stupid!” Raven hit the pod with her fist.
“No it didn’t,” I mumbled.
“This is all my fault,” Clarke shook her head. “Some else got here before us. We have to find him.”
While Finn and Raven went off on their own, Clarke and I remained together, searching the woods for Bellamy. He finally appeared a little ways ahead of us, just casually walking along. Clarke and I exchanged glances before running up to him.
“Bellamy!” Clarke snarled. “Where is it?”
“Hey, Princess, you taking a walk in the woods?” He asked, smiling.
Clarke stopped in front of him, her face red. “They’re getting ready to kill three hundred people up there to save oxygen, and I can promise you it won’t be council members. It’ll be working people.” She poked his chest. “Your people.”
Suddenly, Finn came out of nowhere, shoving Bellamy hard. “Where the hell is the radio, Bellamy?”
Bellamy shoved Finn back. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Bellamy Blake?” Raven asked, her soft expression turning to a smirk. “They’re looking for you everywhere.”
“Shut up.”
“What is she talking about?” I asked.
“He shot Chancellor Jaha.”
Our eyes all shot to Bellamy, who kept his eyes planted on the ground. “That’s why you took the wristbands. You needed everyone to think the ground wasn’t survivable.” Clarke choked out.
Finn shook his head. “All of that ‘whatever the hell we want’? You just care about saving your own skin.”
Bellamy didn’t respond, instead turning and beginning to walk away. Raven shook her head, following close behind him. “Hey, Shooter! Where’s my radio?” She jumped in front of him, causing Bellamy to stop.
“Get out of my way.”
“Where is it?” Raven pressed once again.
Bellamy shook his head. “I should’ve killed you when I had the chance.”
“Really? Well, I’m right here.” Raven stepped closer before Bellamy grabbed her suit, shoving her up against a tree. In a matter of seconds Raven had pulled out a knife, pointing it at Bellamy’s throat. “Where’s my radio?”
“Stop it!” Clarke yelled, getting between them.
Bellamy let go of Raven, turning away from the group. When he finally turned back around, his expression had softened. “Jaha deserved to die. You all know that.”
“Yeah, he isn’t my favourite person either, but he isn’t dead.”
We all looked back at Raven.
“What?” Bellamy choked out.
Raven sighed. “You’re a lousy shot.”
I turned to look back at Bellamy, quickly approaching him. “Bellamy, don’t you see what this means?” I asked, my voice quiet. “You’re not a murderer.”
Clarke stood next to me. “You always did what you had to do to protect your sister. That’s who you are, and you can do it again by protecting three hundred of your people.”
Bellamy looked back at me, his eyes wet. I locked my eyes onto his, a frown forming across my face. “Where’s the radio?”
Bellamy stared back before finally, he shook his head. “It’s too late.”
After Bellamy had finally told us where he tossed the radio, Clarke and I returned to camp to gather a search party. The sun was slowly disappearing behind the hills in the distance before finally Jones pulled something out of the lake.
“Guys, I found it!”
Everyone rushed over, Raven quickly grabbing it from his hands.
“Can you fix it?” Clarke asked.
Raven examined it for a moment. “Maybe, but it’ll take at least half the day to dry out the components to see what’s broken.”
“Like I said, it’s too late.” Bellamy spoke from behind us.
I could feel my fists ball up and I spun around, marching through the shallow water to meet Bellamy on dry land. “Do you have any idea what you did? Do you even care?” I asked, my jaw clenched.
“You asked me to help. I helped.”
“Three hundred people are going to die today, because of you!” Clarke snapped from behind me.
I shook my head. “How can you just not care?”
Bellamy avoided my eyes, staring directly down at his feet. I knew he wanted to speak. To defend himself. Maybe he had finally realized he just couldn’t.
“Wait,” Raven spoke up. “We don’t have to talk to the Ark. We just have to let them know we’re down here, right?”
Finn nodded. “Yeah, but how do we do that with no radio?”
Raven smiled, looking around. “I think I have an idea.”
Raven took Clarke, Finn and a few others back to her pod in hopes of savaging parts. Her plan was to send flares high enough using rocket fuel that the Ark would see them. By dark we had managed to set them up, everyone gathering around, anxiously waiting for the show to start.
“You guys ready?” Raven asked, cheers erupting through the crowd. “Alright then, light ‘em up!”
In just a few moments, flares began shooting off into the sky, lighting up the entire camp. Everyone just stared on, in awe of the sight. I thought back on the books I’d read on the Ark as a kid, picturing the images of Fireworks. This wasn’t quite like them, but they were probably the closest we’d ever get.
My eyes left the sky for a moment, landing on Bellamy, who stood off to the side. His arms were folded across his chest, a frown painted neatly across his face. As much as I wanted to ignore him, I couldn’t help but join him.
“Not enjoying the show?” I asked, slipping beside him. “I mean, why would you? They come down here, you’re kind of screwed.”
Bellamy’s face tensed.
I thought back to our time in the Cave. What he’d said to me that night. “What’s done is done, Bellamy. You can’t change it now, so learn from it, do better next time.”
Bellamy looked at me from the corner of his eye, his expression turning into a small smirk as he looked down at the ground, them back up at me. “Seriously?”
“What?” I asked, smiling. “You were right then and I’m right now. You did what you had to do to protect your sister, but if you want any chance of being forgiven when they get down here, you need to do better. You need to show them that you’re worthy of forgiveness, just like the rest of us.”
Bellamy shook his head. “It’s not that simple, Athena.”
I let out a sigh, turning my attention back to the sky. “Who says it can’t be?”

Creativitwins - Talking in the Garden
Following on from ‘Helplessly in Love’, Roman and Remus have a serious conversation about Remus’ motives and the topic of love as a whole.
Word Count: 1,771
(if you ship the twins, I’ll throw a frisbee at you)
-
Roman paced back and forth across the walled garden. This quiet place was considered the most obvious ‘neutral zone’ in the realm of the Imagination both siblings resided over. It was neither overly inspired by fairy tales, nor overrun by monsters and decay, making it the perfect harmony between both halves of Creativity. Playing the role of a Secret Garden, it granted the other Sides an entry into the Imagination without the fear of getting too lost on either side. To the left, there were elegant red rose bushes, trees with ripe and delicious fruit, and wooden frames helping clematis plants climb high overhead and guide you to the elegantly carved maple door. On the right, the grass turned darker. The path was lined with weeds and venus flytraps that would gladly snap at ankles that stepped too close. The trees were barren, yet birds would regularly perch on the branches. Poison ivy climbed the wall surrounding the walnut door with identical carvings to the opposite door. In the middle, a large pond housed a variety of colourful koi and piranha that cohabit the waters peacefully. In the open court between the two doors were two stone stools. When the twins would squabble in their younger days, they would eventually meet here and claim a seat to talk through the problem. It was something that rang true to this day.
After recent events had calmed down, Patton had taken the time during one of their tea parties to fill Roman in on events leading up to the group appearing in his room with Remus of all Sides. Not only that, Remus applied a ‘what would Roman do’ approach. No tricks, no attempts to make Thomas feel worse about matters… It was all rather strange.
“I’m going to have to call him eventually,” Roman muttered, tightly folding his arms as he lapped the pond for the third time. “Talking to myself about it isn’t going to give me answers, and I know I can’t leave this be… Ugh!” He forced himself to stop walking with a firm stomp of his foot. “Remus! Get to the garden now!”
-
The dark door draped in ivy was pushed open to reveal a rather confused Duke. It slammed shut behind him once he was in the garden, leaving the pair in silence for several long seconds.
“While I am one to gladly talk through problems, I don’t know what I did this time.” One of Remus’ traits was honesty, after all, and he had been trying to keep out of the way of the other Sides in recent times.
“No, I know. Nothing’s wrong. I just… I need to talk, okay? This is neutral territory so it’s not gonna make either of us feel out of place, or something.” Roman slumped onto one of the stone stools, hands interlocked to hide potential fidgeting. “I’ve been thinking about what you did recently - when you brought everyone to my room like that. Patton told me what happened… Why did you do it?”
“I told you already. Thomas needed the ‘love expert’, and he trusts you a heck of a lot more than he does me. No one else could get to your room too easily without you, so I was the only option left.”
“But you didn’t try anything. You didn’t hurt Thomas, or ruin the excitement. That would’ve been the perfect chance without me blocking you.” It seemed Thomas had kept his word and didn’t tell Roman about Remus’ good intentions. However, it came at the price of the topic pestering Roman once the excitement of love had faded enough to focus on other matters. “The first time you met Thomas, you wanted to hurt him. Why not now?”
“It’s really not as deep as you’re trying to make it out to be. Thomas needed you, I could help! It was for the greater good for Thomas, really.”
“You could have taken my place! It’s what you always say you’d do. ‘I’m Creativity too. I should be listened to as well’!” Roman’s impression of Remus was emphasised by a wave of his right hand, just like how his brother would do it. “You know about love, just like me. You could have given him advice and taken all the credit -”
“No I don’t.”
“- and showed… What?” Remus’ blunt interruption had Roman’s rambling screech to a halt. He gawked up at his brother with a wide-eyed, puzzled expression. In the pause that followed, Remus made his way to the other stone stool and sat on it. Compared to his brother, Remus was slouched forward with his arms resting on both knees.
“I don’t know about love. I never have.” Why beat around the bush with this? “Sure, I know what it means and what happens when people fall in love, but I can’t talk about it as you could. I don’t have the same desire to fall in love with someone, so why should I be the one trying to tell Thomas how to declare his feelings?”
“You… Don’t know about love?” Roman felt like he had been slapped in the face. Guilt bubbled in his stomach. All this time, did Remus lack any sort of positive relationship with anyone?
“I did have friends once, you know. I have ‘loved’ platonically,” Remus scoffed. “But this whole ‘one true love’ or ‘wanting a boyfriend’ stuff you’re always on about… That isn’t what I’ve felt about anyone. I never brought it up when we were younger because I thought it wasn’t necessary, or that maybe I’d be proven when I found the guy of my dreams.” He let out a sigh with a quirked eyebrow when he noticed his brother’s reaction to this. “Oh, don’t act like I told you a shark chewed off my leg. It’s not that big of a deal. I could give advice, but it would be an outsider looking in. Since Thomas needed personal experience and better insight, he needed you. We always did say you were the one who could inspire others. I’d never be able to do that for love. But you could, and you did!” Roman has always been the hero. That’s why he was the favoured twin.
“... I’m sorry I never considered your feelings.” Roman’s voice was low as the pity stayed on his face. “All those times I tried to set you up with denizens in the Imagination when we were younger as part of our stories, all those times you’d side-step or find an excuse to worm out of it… I must have made you feel so uncomfortable.”
“Ah, ah, ah. Don’t start that. I’m not angry. This isn’t something to guilt you over. You didn’t know, and I didn’t understand. I only learned that being Aromantic was a ‘thing’ when Thomas was learning about all the LBGT strands and worrying about them all in case he offended someone.” At last, Remus’ confidence in the matter seemed to falter a little as he added, “It was a relief knowing I wasn’t completely ‘broken’.”
“You aren’t ‘broken’.” Roman blurted, hoping to stop whatever dark thoughts were bubbling in Remus’ mind. “You’re you. And while I might not like who you are, that… Doesn’t make you the worst.” The last part was admitted as a reluctant grumble. “Me wanting to fall in love doesn’t mean you’re wrong not feeling anything about it. Just like me not wanting any involvement in your sexual opinions on guys I thought were cute doesn’t mean I’m wrong either.”  Now it was Remus’ turn to look surprised once the penny dropped.
“You’re Ace?”
“I guess we both had something to learn today, huh? Not that this was why I called you here.” Maybe it was the magic of the garden, where the feud was left outside the walls and the brothers could simply talk. It allowed Roman to swallow some of his pride on the original matter. “Thank you. For, you know, not using it as a chance to take my place.”
“What can I say? I make a terrible Roman impersonator. Just like when the day comes that Thomas needs my help, you’d make a terrible Remus!” The darker Creativity twin grinned in anticipation. Roman was quick to take the bait with a cocky laugh.
“Oh please. We both know Thomas isn’t gonna resort to using your ideas.”
“This Hallowe’en might be the year. There’s gonna be a full moon this year too. He’d be a fool not to do something terrifying!” Hey, maybe Remus could try and get back in contact with Virgil to get him on the Duke’s side!
“Not a chance! I’ll get him to work on an epic, fantastical tribute to ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’! There’s a simply wonderful suit of an alternate costume that Thomas would look marvellous in!” Fuelled with passion, Roman sprung to his feet with a triumphant laugh.
“And he could try to persuade the cutie to dress as a Sally-inspired character?”
“Why would I… Wait, that’s - that’s not a bad idea.”
“Especially if he gets to wear something short and scandalous~”
“Aaand there goes that little bubble of respect. Good going.” Roman waved a dismissive hand as Remus cackled. “Look, I’m sorry that I was surprised you didn’t wanna hurt Thomas, but don’t ruin this for him, okay?”
“I had no intention to do so. Thomas deserves to be happy, right? There’s plenty of other chances to jump in and have fun! Can’t be too predictable, dear brother, especially when you have the upper hand on the topic!” Now Remus pulled himself onto his feet and turned on the ball of his foot to face his door. “Until next time -”
“Wait!” Roman needed to have the last word. He couldn’t leave like this. “You… You did a good job. Thank you for helping Thomas when I couldn’t.” A gust of wind picked up, briefly obscuring Remus’ vision with rose petals. When the breeze died down, the Prince was gone. Once he realised he was alone in the walled garden, Remus walked to the door to his part of the Imagination, only to pause.
A black rose had blossomed on his side of the garden, thriving despite the weeds that should have suffocated it. He had considered plucking it and taking it with him as a memento… But why kill it? Instead, he knelt down to gently brush his thumb against a thorn.
The black rose amongst weeds was like him with the other Sides - the oddity that shouldn’t exist. Yet they both do in spite of exceptions. In time, maybe both would prosper in their own way.

Twilight: Chapters 1-8
I was bored and when I’m bored I read cheesy romance novels. Now seemed as good a time as any to read this series that I’ve heard so much about.
Basically these are just my thoughts on the novel as I’m reading it. I already know quite a bit about the story so that is heavily effecting my thoughts and predictions.
Of course there will be spoilers.
Bella is like a kitten she tries to be intimidating and angry but really she’s just this cute little fluff ball that trips over nothing. It’s hilarious
Edward is just infuriating
Bruh. This guy- He was like you shouldn’t be my friend, stay away from me. Then he goes so do you wanna go to Seattle with me on Saturday? DUDE just stop
I can’t take this book seriously. The writing’s bad. The characters are bad, the story is meh. But, inexplicably, I love it. It’s so funny.
Okay. So I know Edward likes her but at this point in the book he has made no indication that his fascination and attraction to her is anything but pure friendliness and curiosity. But she’s like YO HE LIKES ME WHAT DOES THIS MEEEAAAANNN?!?!?!
WHAT THE- DUDE This guuuuuuuuuuuy Come on!  He has repeatedly been like nope we can’t be friends you should avoid me and then he asks her to go to Seattle with him. And then he’s like you should stay away. AND NOW he is sitting alone at lunch makes eye contact with her and then motions her over AND WINKS
He sounds like someone who would trick her into his car and then drive away and rape her. The way he asked her to sit with him sounded terrifying. Of course I can’t actually hear him but that was 100% the vibe I was getting
WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU FRICKING MORON
Edward after Bella questions why he invited her to sit with him for lunch: “I decided as long as I was going to hell, I might as well do it thoroughly.”
I’m team anybody but Edward
Yeah if I didn’t know he was a vampire who has no idea how to handle his emotions I would be terrified that Edward was going to assault Bella
This guy has no idea how to talk to people. I get it he’s in love or whatever but dude stop being creepy
THERE YOU GO AGAIN SAYING THEY CANT BE FRIENDS
This dude is being her friend and when Bella says he’s her friend he’s like WOAH no no no we’re not friends I just like hanging out with you and stuff....
HOW CAN SHE AVOID YOU WHEN YOU’RE DROP DEAD GORGEOUS AND KEEP GOADING HER?
HA she thinks he’s Batman or Spider-Man she can’t decided that’s awesome
Because he can read minds Bella! Just not yours for some reason.
Ooo this boy is hot and he knows it look at him wrapping her around his finger
Edward go shoot your self
Oh my gods Bella. He has literally told you stay away I’m not safe like 10 times and it just now occurred to you that he might be dangerous?!
Ooo look at Edward skipping class how edgy
WHAT KIND OF SCIENCE CLASS HAS ITS STUDENTS PRICK THEIR FINGERS AS PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT?!
ooooh I see why Edward skipped class today
Haha this girl is scared of blood and she’s going to join a vampire clan? That’s a stupid idea. Her fear of blood is like crippling. She almost passed out and is now lying on the sidewalk trying to calm herself down.
How does she handle her period then? That must be a traumatic week...
OF COURSE EDWARD SHOWS UP
This guy just kidnapped her
Edward I know it’s hilarious but you laughing is just going to piss her off so please let’s avoid a temper tantrum and stop laughing
What the- So Mike (he likes Bella hates Edward I find him annoying) just walks into the nurses office with another guy who fainted when he saw blood and Edward is like Bella get out of the office right now
What is Mike gonna do? What did you read in Mike’s mind, Ed?
Bella is like 2 steps from being a Vampire. She hates the smell of blood. Not the sight of it just the smell. And did she not notice that Edward just referred to her as human as in he’s not
He actually just dragged her to his car. Is nobody else concerned?
Oh look at that they just bonded over classical music
LOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL  Edward like low key just asked if Bella’s parents would be okay if he married her. You have known her for barely two months you need to calm down lover boy.
“There are no secrets in Forks.” oh then I guess everyone knows that the best doctor around and all of his family are vampires??
Edward. Shut up.
Nobody likes you Jessica. Shut up, I don’t want your opinion.
Okay how does Bella plan on getting out of town with Edward with out her dad and the entire town asking questions. Her truck is loud and distinctive. If she leaves it anywhere in town everyone will know within 5 minutes. And she cant leave it in her drive way because then her dad will get suspicious. AND is she going to take Edward clothing shopping with her?! I see flaws in this plan.
Do drift wood fires really burn blue? holy frick it does. Whaaaaaaaaaaat. OH it’s also toxic and not safe to burn so um they’re all going to die.
*gasp* is this when we meet the werewolf people?! Jacob? *mutters* is that his name?
Haha I knew it
If they’re pretty they’re not human. That is what this book has taught me.
I like Jacob. He sticks around right?
haha he likes her. Man I wish I could in good conscious ship them. He’s funny, a good talker, attractive, builds cars. What more could she want? But no. She chooses Edward. Which is fine. I assume I’ll eventually like him too. But right now I’m all for Jacob.
Oh I bet the Cullens don’t come to the beach because of the Blacks.
NOOOOOO no no no Bella please for the love of god do not try and flirt it will not work and will only end up embarrassing you and me.
How is this working?
Jacob has got to be pulling her leg or something. There is no way he’d actually be giving away clan secrets like this.
Looks like he is.
What an idiot.
YEAH Vampires! Finally.
Yeah uh huh be worried Jacob. You just told the biggest secret ever to the one person who is going to believe you.
Yeeaaaah Team Jacob. Bella stop leading on the better of your two options. Everyone knows you won’t choose him except for him.
Listen to your dream. It’s more accurate than you know.
Her just listening to the same album over and over again is so relatable.
Believe it Bella. He’s a Vampire. Now go confront him about it.
Foreshadowing that Edward is from the 18th century? Did he know Jane Austin?
ha I love her dad.
Lol Tyler my guy you don’t have a chance.
OOOOOOH sunlight right. The sparkle or whatever in the sun so they can’t go to school when there’s direct sunlight. I’m so freaking slow. Thanks for explaining, Angela.
oh no... The dudes have her trapped. Edward is going to show up. I would bet money on it.
haha silver car that had better be edward- aw that move was smooth as hell- yeah edward!
Little did you know that Vampires are amazing get away drivers. They can even do fancy driving tricks. If you want a good chauffeur hire a Vampire.
What’s wrong, Eddy? Why you so mad?
Aw. He got so riled up for her. He really needs to learn to not feel things so strongly but it’s still cute.
Yeah maybe don’t try and distract him by talking about someone he might see as a threat to your affection for him.
Dang he’s a good driver.
lol I haven’t liked Edward at all. He’s annoying, possessive, can’t control his emotions, cocky. Then I find out he’s a good driver and I’m like ooo I like him. I am such an idiot.
Edward you don’t eat. Why do you want to take Bella out for dinner? That’s just going to be awkward.
Oh nooooo. Every single person in Forks is going to know that Bella stayed behind with Edward. uuuuugh this is a nightmare.
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?? This guy has been alive for who knows how long and you’re telling me he has no idea the effect he has on women? He doesn’t know the paralyzing ability his smile has? Bullcrap.
oh oh oh he’s giving her his jacket oooooh she has fallen forever
oh and he wears turtle necks. I aproooove. Turtle necks are so cool. Idk but I love them.
Lol I don’t think he thinks she’s human. He knows she’s not a vampire but she does not act like a human.
NO do not question him Bella. This is a bad idea. I do not advise.
“Let’s call him ‘Joe’“ LOL
OH my GOSSSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSH
lol she’s a trouble magnet and it’s the truth
ooo that’s a nice word: Unequivocally
HE WAS FOLLOWING HER?! that’s not creepy at all!
wait. what?
Ooooh he wanted to kill her the first time they met and yet he didn’t kill her I get it now
Tell her.
okay calm down buddy Bella is okay everyone is fine you need to take a deep breathe and calm down.
oh shoot okay going to dinner was a smart idea it kept him from killing people
Why can’t he read her mind? I wanna know.

go go squid! eps 1-30 - thoughts
i’ve actually read the novel for this a few years ago as a teen and it was just alright in my estimation, it was cute overall and a fun read but i largely forgot about it in the past few years. checked out the drama out of curiosity as to how they’d adapt it. have watched up to ep 30 at this point and i’d say i’m rather ambivalent (though i’m still pretty engaged) so here’s some rambling about my thoughts about my watch so far.
Ngl, the first 7 eps were unbearable to watch imo. I have a super low tolerance for secondhand embarrassment when watching movies and dramas (which is why i can’t get behind some high school movies/dramas) and it was uttermost torture watching tongnian stalk her way (very incompetently too, i must add) to k&k’s resting quarters, even getting his identity wrong (despite being fully capable of baidu searching him given that she knew his full name + found out he was part of a famous team), intending to go to watch him the next day but not even thinking about buying tickets till she was actually at the event venue and then being all righteous about not buying tickets from scalpers... Worrying about causing a misunderstanding among gun’s trainees yet continually getting near him and hence causing a misunderstanding anyway... Though i knew that it was part of her character setup (high iq genius but nil experience in love?) but i couldn’t bear to watch all this unfold haha. Coupled with the very draggy endless flashback scenes and all the testosterone-pumped angst about solo (and now 30 eps in i’m very into Li Xian’s turn as han shangyan but my eyebrows were hurting watching him furrow his brow 24/7) i was almost prepared to quit but was told that everything would get better around ep 8.
Tumblr media
And lo and behold... it did. As predicted, around ep 8/9 a switch flipped and i began to be more engaged and enjoy the drama more. I was trying to pinpoint what exactly changed my opinion and i think above all, it was the character of han shangyan that really captivated/held my interest. I started seeing gun not just as the typical 霸道总裁 trope that’s just meant to be confident and commanding and therefore hot but more as a very complex and well fleshed out human (more so than the novel i think, but i can’t really remember at this point as it’s been years, and anyway the novel is a pretty short book while this drama is considered quite long for a modern fluffy cdrama thus allowing more room for exploration).
I really appreciated seeing all the dualities to his character, e.g. his god-like status in his industry and being the idol of thousands and thousands of youth yet seeing how this celebrity status does not translate to being estimated highly by the people around him, and how it does feed into his ideas and perception of himself to a certain extent, though he is also adamant on doing what he deems right, not caring what people think. How he as a leader of k&k appears unflappable, in control, and is determined, eyes fixed on the prize; yet his softness and care for his boys and the elderly he employs and his past teammates shine through in quiet moments and little actions. He has lofty dreams and big goals and aspirations for the future of his team, yet he is also a man bogged down by tons of emotional baggage, stuck in ruts of nostalgia and guilt and unprocessed anger about the past and unable to let go of past enmities or relations. Even his small little quirks amuse/intrigue me, like his sucking on sweets whenever he’s bothered, like his weird obsession with that one Beyond song and playing it whenever he’s Brooding about his past (though it’s probably just the drama’s way of shilling Netease Music lol)
Tumblr media
Reading Han Shangyan’s personality/character arc as such, I found myself very invested in what was happening to him/what he was doing/his interactions with the other characters in the story. Even the flashback scenes and SP team scenes that I found very droll initially and still do to a certain extent now held more of my interest as a gateway to understand HSY more. He’s definitely not a perfect character and is deeply flawed, but I appreciated that they portrayed him in such a manner as he definitely felt more real. (though when it came to how this comes into play with regards to his r/ship with Tong Nian, I had rather mixed feelings about it, which I’ll elaborate on further below)
Tumblr media
Similarly, I also enjoyed the fleshing out of side characters like Mi Shaofei, Solo, Su Cheng, Xiao Ai etc. Mi Shaofei’s arc especially was very moving and wistful to me, seeing him have his dream of being a champion rekindled at the start of the drama and going back to be a competitive CTF athlete, yet having his age and his lack of practice cause him to not be in top form and doing badly, and eventually making the decision to retire. Seeing him express regret having quit together with Han Shangyan back in the day in a pique of anger and not having this arc resolve in a neat, fulfilling way - I really appreciated it and thought it illuminated quite a sobering reality that timing and circumstances may not always yield the best outcome, that actions from the past that you thought were the right thing to do may come back to haunt you, that you may regret your past actions, that you may have to close the door on certain things even if you really want it. And I really like Mi Shaofei’s personality as well, seeing how he has a good read on his friends’ temperaments and personalities and knows how to diffuse tense situations (especially when Han Shangyan is being prickly and abrasive), how he values the collective above himself, like being happy that SP team scores improved greatly even when the improvement came about due to his retirement. I’m glad that he now has a new path which he can work towards his original dream of being a champion, albeit in a different way that he had initially envisioned.
The main thing niggling at me/making me feel conflicted as I watch the drama is actually Tong Nian’s character/Tong Nian and HSY’s relationship. I don’t really know how to explain what exactly bothers me so much about this, but here’s a shoddy attempt:
Tumblr media
In comparison to how well fleshed out Han Shang Yan’s character arc is, Tong Nian’s arc sadly feels very underwhelming in comparison, and I wish similar character development was afforded to her character. 30 episodes in, I literally know nothing about her inner thoughts, motivations, character etc that is not Gun-related gushing. And this is all the more a pity given that her character’s setup was so cool - being so smart and intelligent, being so advanced in a STEM field, also having such a successful online career out of her singing hobby - all these hint at such an interesting female lead, but ultimately feels like an empty shell of a person. There really is no scene where she exists independently, separate from Gun or Gun-related thoughts pervading her mind - e.g. even when she is pitching some cool project idea showcasing her computing skills to the police department, she’s hung up on Gun after breaking up with him; when she’s invigilating a class she’s still thinking about him; she’s coding some new game for him; she’s doing some debugging... but that’s because she’s devastated after he behaved in a shit way towards her; she’s at some tryouts to be the singer for the ctf theme song! she’s showcasing her singing! but somehow... the show still managed to make it all about how she’s heartbroken over him; she uploaded a new song! ... but it’s about how she’s in love with him...
The show tells me she has a life outside of her crush on Gun, but it doesn’t show it as such. Though I also understand that this is due to the drama being centered on esports and hence involving HSY more, and Tong Nian is an outsider to the esports scene and thus her own activities would not be featured as much. It is possible that should they have chosen to feature more about Tong Nian, it might have affected the cohesiveness and pacing and how tight the plot is. But but but... she is the female lead, after all?? I literally know more about Mi Shaofei than about Tong Nian, and he is a supporting character! And precisely because the show did such a good job of fleshing out HSY, whose job and aspiration and passion and friendship-related angst etc lend a lot of fodder to shape his character and that is totally unrelated to his romance with Tong Nian, Tong Nian’s character development seems really lacking in gravitas in comparison.
Tumblr media
This sense of imbalance spills over to my perception of them as a couple. I definitely am not opposed to or feel squicked out by huge age gaps in principle, as long as there isn’t some power imbalance and no teenagers are involved. But something about the combination of Tong Nian being all about Han Shangyan (at least that’s how the drama portrayed it, even if it was unintentional) while Tong Nian is only one part of Han Shangyan’s life + Tong Nian’s almost worshipful sentiments towards Han Shangyan + the show’s tendency to highlight how much sleep or time she sacrifices to do stuff for him, on top of the huge age gap made me slightly uncomfortable...?
I think I felt it especially during the plot arc of the second break up. The events of this arc were standard asian drama angst fare - interference from well meaning but biased parent leading to melodramatic wallowing in angst and mean behaviour attempting to drive the other party away... If purely viewing this arc from the lens of character exploration, I think the (rather ridiculous) events in that arc like HSY promising Tong Nian’s mother to not bother Tong Nian anymore and all his subsequent shitty behaviour towards Tong Nian shed some light on HSY’s inner self abasement and 自卑感 and was fascinating in that regard. But then seeing how Tong Nian who definitely puts him on a pedestal just internalised all of that horrible behaviour and accepted it and even kept on excusing his actions or asking him if she had done something wrong or if he was mad at her about the cat (though i also was mad that she just got a pet as a gift without asking beforehand lolol) or if he wanted her to do anything... that was SO painful to watch. (Until he implied that he cheated on her, thankfully she drew a line at that!!) I felt like it was bordering on cold violence to some extent? Not that any part of the second break up was Tong Nian’s fault, but just the way the show portrayed Gun’s way of pushing Tong Nian away and Tong Nian’s subsequent response made it harder to just dismiss the entire saga as just pure asian drama typical noble idiocy angst and left a really bad taste in my mouth. And above all what made me quite exasperated was how in the end, HSY didn’t even apologise to Tong Nian about it, and even attempted (and was successful) to get back into her good graces by listing all the reasons why he should be pitied and hence activating Tong Nian’s ‘Han Shangyan is so pitiful and I love him and want to give him everything’ mode, and being so smug about it??
(I feel like I come off as being rather inconsistent here lolol, earlier gushing about how much I love HSY’s character and now ranting about him. I think I just feel very confused about what to feel when watching the drama, and partially I think it’s because the entire romantic plot and all the events of the drama... require some suspension of belief and are not really very cohesive or well plotted, in the sense that it doesn’t seem to flow organically together with the characters’ emotions and responses? i.e. the character’s emotions/motivations/thoughts don’t correspond to their subsequent actions and the other characters’ subsequent responses to said action doesn’t seem proportional at times. So at certain plot points like how HSY got back together with Tong Nian so easily I’m not sure if I’m supposed to feel outraged or just take it in my stride?? I’m not sure if I’m making sense)
Tumblr media
Oh, another thing that bothered me was this weird machoism (?? not sure how to explain it) that I sensed at some parts. An example off the top of my mind would be the entire sequence of HSY and Mi Shaofei going out together after Mi Shaofei announced his retirement, with Tong Nian and Yaya trailing at their heels. Once again, from a character development angle, I enjoyed the dialogues between MSF and HSY, between MSF and Yaya. But seeing MSF and HSY pass their coats to Yaya and Tong Nian then embarking on some bromantic tension-filled run together, while Yaya and Tong Nian are left hovering around waiting for them to return and holding their coats; or seeing MSF and HSY give each other Meaningful Looks and then downing a whole bowl of alcohol in some testosterone-fuelled display of Manly Sorrow and Solidarity as Tong Nian and Yaya watch from the sides, worried... Then having Tong Nian and Yaya each attempting to comfort their respective men... idk, i think coupled with the fact that the show is centred around esports, and most of the esports characters are male, and a larger proportion the main female characters we see are not directly involved and are more on the sidelines, it just gives off the sense of like, the men in this drama having their struggles, their aspirations, their sorrows be forefront and central in the plot, while the women are just there to fawn over them and support from the sidelines and tend to the guys’ emotional needs and baby them when they are being grown children. I’m definitely not explaining this well enough and I’m not sure if my impression is valid or I’m just being a hater or being subconsciously misogynistic and projecting or something lol. I’d love to hear what anyone thinks heh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thankfully, that part of the plot is over and now the romance part of the drama seems to be settled and the drama I’m assuming is gearing up towards winning the championships. This is promising haha because personally feel like the esports plotline is more captivating than the romance. I sense that now that Tong Nian/Gun are a properly established relationship and both are fully on board the dynamic might change a bit so I shall see how I feel about their relationship in the last quarter of the drama!
With regards to the cast, there was all round quite solid acting imo. I thought Li Xian seemed to be overdoing it with the frowning and grouchiness initially but I think it was alright after a few eps. His microexpressions and meaning-loaded gazes and quirked-lip-smiles are pretty affecting. I watched some interviews of him and he seems really different from Gun in real life so that’s quite impressive. Plus I love his slight slouchiness when portraying Gun in the more personal scenes where the facade of gruff boss!han shangyan disappears lolol. For all my problems with the way Tong Nian’s character was portrayed, Yang Zi does a great job in her role too. I think her crying scenes have always been on point and it was no different here. Special shoutout to the actors for Mi Shaofei, Solo and Xiao Ai, who portrayed their roles really well I think!
Lastly on a random note, I’m quite amused by how the soundtrack copiously borrows from the Suddenly This Summer soundtrack, but I’m not complaining because the OST is pretty evocative and whimsical and makes me hugely nostalgic for STS :)

Oh /man/; for the fic meme, if it's not bother: you said in your answer to my comment over the last chapter of your fic that Martin WAS dying a bit a bit inside at Jon's casual "they'll think we're sleeping together". I would love to have his POV of the scene??? Because i'm still not over that conversation at all. If you feel like doing any other scene from Martin's POV though, I'm game! your story is so amazing =)
It’s no bother at all, thank you for asking me! Let’s see if I can do Martin’s POV justice, shall we?
new fic meme: send me a scene with multiple characters from one of my fics , pick a character who isn’t the POV character, and i’ll rewrite the scene from their POV! This scene is from this chapter:   https://archiveofourown.org/works/16951992/chapters/43953424
----------------
As Martin tried to get comfortable in the sleeping bag, he wondered if he should be trying to get used to this.
Martin wasn't under any illusions. Jon kept him around because Martin was useful, because he had no choice but to work with him.
And that was fine by Martin. He liked being helpful. If he could make Jon happy by being useful, then Martin was happy.
(He'd taken the memory of Jon's genuine laughter at a joke Martin had made and wrapped it up tightly, stored it away to be revisited whenever he wanted. It didn't matter to Martin that it had mostly been Jon being giddy at the prospect of getting his hands on the tapes.)
But now, Jon had the tapes. And Martin's use was at an end. Jon wouldn't want him around any more, and Martin didn't really have anywhere else to go.
He was pretty sure he'd be able to take the sleeping bag, though, so it wasn't all bad. He should probably broach the topic now so that he'd know how much time he had to get things prepared.
"Jon?"
"You're supposed to be trying to sleep,” Jon said.
"I know, I will, I just… I was thinking, will I… Do you want me to find somewhere else to live? After we get out of here? I mean, you've got the tapes now, which is what you wanted my help for. I've kind of... kind of outlived my usefulness at this point. Should I start packing, when we get back?”
"...have you determined who murdered Gertrude in the last five minutes and merely neglected to inform me?" Jon asked.
"What? No."
"Then I can still use your help, can’t I?”
Ah, that was right; the tapes weren't the end of this mystery. And Jon thought Martin could still contribute to solving it. “...oh. Yeah, I suppose that makes sense,” he replied, feeling hope start to kindle in his chest.
“And besides, we still need to work together on the next phase. You wanted the police involved in this,” Jon added.
The police were a complication, though. “Right. That’s… that’s another reason why I thought you might want me to clear out. I mean, what if they come to your apartment and find me there?” Martin asked.
“Hmn. That seems unlikely. They would need a warrant to search my home, and then they would need to show up when you were present. And even if they do find out about you, it’s likely they would merely assume we’re sleeping together. Office romances may be scandalous, but they aren’t illegal.”
Martin wondered, sometimes, if he really had made Jon forget about his confession.
He'd certainly wanted to at the time, wanted to snatch those words back out of the air and stuff them back down his throat.
He'd wanted to when he looked at Jon with his head buried in his arms, hiding his expression from Martin. Disgust? Disdain? Something worse?
And then Martin had asked if they could forget about it, and Jon had agreed, and then Jon just went back to treating him like normal.
(Like normal for a person, even, and not for a monster.)
Martin couldn't be sure if he'd brainwashed Jon or not. And he couldn't ask; the best case scenario was that Jon had voluntarily decided to ignore Martin's feelings for the sake of their necessary cooperation, and bringing it up again would only result in more rejection and another kick to his unrequited affections. Worst case, he actually had used his powers on Jon again despite promising not to, and making Jon aware of that fact would make Jon hate him even more at the same time he told Jon about his feelings again.
And when Jon said things like that, it brought all those questions back up to the surface. Jon wouldn't casually talk about others thinking they were sleeping together if he could actually remember that Martin was in love with him, would he?
Martin didn't know. Jon's thought process was entirely a mystery to Martin, which was a nerve-wracking thing to have to worry about when half of the decisions it seemed to lead Jon to were incredibly dangerous. How was Martin supposed to keep Jon safe when he was entirely unable to predict what the man would do next?
Martin shoved away the intrusive thought that whispered he could always just make Jon keep himself safe.
“...yeah, I, I guess that would probably happen. But wouldn’t that... bother you?” Martin asked.
“People making stupid assumptions? I suppose it does, on principle, but it’s not as though I haven’t had plenty of experience dealing with people jumping to ludicrous conclusions in essentially every statement I come across. I’m not about to complain about it if it works in my favour for once. ...So long as Tim doesn’t find out about it.”
Martin couldn't help the brief burst of a laugh at the mental image of Tim's reaction to the rumor of an illicit relationship between Jon and Martin of all people. “God, can you imagine? He would never let us hear the end of that.”
"It would be a rough few weeks, at least," Jon drawled.
"Yeah," Martin said. He felt simultaneously guilty and pathetic for entertaining a brief fantasy of Jon and him needing to pretend to be a couple to maintain their cover. Guilty, because Jon would hate that, and pathetic because if Martin was going to be dreaming up fantastical scenarios, he could at least have enough self-respect to have a fantasy where his feelings were actually reciprocated.
"...okay. Just… wanted to make sure. Goodnight, Jon."
"Goodnight."

Amazing Quotes from the comics
Below are some of my favorite quotes from each person. Sorry this list is long.
Bruce Wayne/Batman
- Death is powerless against you if you leave a legacy of good behind. Death is powerless against you if you do your job. My father saved the lives of over four thousand people, one at a time... with his bare hands and his mind. Death was with him the entire time.
-  Clark, I'm sure anywhere you go in the universe, you'll find stupid people.
-  You don't know how I question myself and everything I've become. The right of it. The wrong of it. Not allowing myself any reward for the good. Damning myself for every mistake. Thinking of everyone who's sacrificed themselves in my war. Everyone close to me. Everyone who cared.
- Our greatest glory is not in ever falling, but in rising every time we fall.
-  Sometimes it’s only madness that makes us what we are.
Selina Kyle/Catwoman
- Live fast. Love hard. Die young. Leave a good-smelling corpse.
-  A long time ago, before I put on this mask, I was afraid of everything
-  "Your ex-lover, a murderous psychopath who has repeatedly made our lives a living hell, nearly burns my new home to the ground and all you can say is 'gross'?!
-  Show a man what he expects to see, and he won't look beneath the surface.
Alfred Pennyworth
-  I fear sometimes, dear boy, that if you don't give this up, you'll have nothing. You can't have darkness and light at the same time, Master Bruce..
-  Everyone has a vulnerability
-  Hnn. At least when Master Richard snuck out, he had the decency to construct a pillow dummy.
-  Pirate Stories-why did I love them as a boy? Because at heart they're about children who rebel against their parents to create new lives for themselves. They're stories of defiance. But the trick is, when you look at them as a parent, you see, they're actually written as cautionary tales. The child comes home in the end, just before doom strikes the ship. But in this tale, Bruce, the one I've helped make for you, Batman...I worry it has gone on too long...that I've kept it going with you long past it's natural end. That's what I was screaming about when you were on the wrecked submarine. Not the ways you've failed me but the ways I may have failed you.
Kate Kane/Batwoman
-  You coming? Or do I have to smash this bitch in the teeth all by myself?
-  You think I'm afraid of you? Any of you? You gave me a bulletproof suit, you morons! What can you do to stop me?
-  You will never get these years with her back, and a daughter needs her mom. I know I did. And I would've done anything to have more time with her. I can't be the reason for doing that to another kid. I can't
- So there is someone new in town ... Who the hell wears white?
Luke Fox/Batwing
-  I really should lead with the knockout gas instead of conversation.
-  You're leading me around through this nightmare like it's business as usual. Like I'm supposed to accept the supernatural. I accept it, okay? And now I'm going to kick its ass!
-  This night sucks. And now I have no choice but to run and hide because "Mary Psycho Poppins" just handed me my ass.
Dick Grayson/Nightwing (including his time as robin)
-  With you guys, it seems like I'm hot stuff … a know-it-all … but I've been back with The Batman again, and next to him I feel like I'm a stupid kid repeating fifth grade … for the third time.
-  Try to understand our position here, Batman. You began training to be a hero as a young adult. For me and a lot of the other Titans -- like Vic -- that training shaped and influenced most of our childhood. Unlike the JLA, the Titans aren't just about a promise to the world -- it's also about a promise to each other … to ourselves. We swore on our childhood nightmares that we'd be there for one another. If I don't honor that I don't honor who I am.
-  Sometimes I'm surprised I can even stand on a high ledge after what happened to the Flying Graysons. Boss Zucco could have sabatoged Haly's Circus any number of ways to drive down business and get his protection money. Instead he gave the crowd that night a show they'll never forget. I know I won't. When my mom and dad died, attendance actually went up.
-  Okay Mom and Dad, your 'Flying Grayson' is about to take the great leap. Or as they say in French, Le Grand Saut. Down, down, and away. I'd say I wish you could see me now, but I know you're watching me - I can feel angels on my shoulders. And probably a bat too. You said some records aren't meant to be broken, Bruce. But more than anything, I wish you were down there right now watching with Alfred and Tim as I break this one.
-  I had a good teacher, except for the interpersonal skills and the ability to work with others. That was me.
Barbara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle
- A little over a year has passed since my old life ended, since I died and was reborn. The shadows remain, but only to give contrast to the light. I am no longer a distaff impersonation of someone else — I’m me, more me than I have ever been. I embrace it, and the light, with a deep, continuing joy.
-  Gotham should be safe again. Well, until the next thing. There’s always another thing
-  Wait for a hero? Barbara Joan Gordon -- Be your own damn hero
-  I'll wake up, learn from my mistakes and ultimately win the fight. I always do.
Jason Todd (including his time as robin)
-  I'll be damned if my best friend is going to die ... because he was dumb enough to trust me
-  Someone tell me I'm not having a heart-to-heart with a reanimated assassin
-  Trust? You...? I'll... give it a try, guys. But I'll tell you right now... I'm probably going to screw it up.
-  I'm sorry, I'm never going to be the hero you want me to be. I have every confidence in you--that you'll stay the hero I know you are
Tim Drake/Red Robin (including his time as robin)
-  The weight of the future... all of our futures... it just presses on me sometimes. And lately, it's been crushing, and I've been too afraid to ask for help. But I need to, Bruce. So this is me, asking for help.
-  It’s not smart to blackmail the wrong people
- That’s what we are. Not just a team, but a family. One day we might be the Justice League, but for today we’re the Teen Titans.
-  I had a plan. That plan just went to hell
Stephanie Brown/Spoiler (including her time as batgirl and robin)
-  How come every time I try to do this different than Batman, I end up doing exactly what Batman would do?
-  I am who I choose to be.
-  I just watch two guys stealing TVs run into one another. Sadly, both televisions were lost... On the bright side, they'll each have a friend in jail.
-  Here's the deal, I'm a 'punch first, ask questions later' kinda gal. Him? He's a stabber.
Cassandra Cain/Orphan (including her time as batgirl/black bat)
-  I don't kill. But I don't lose, either.
-  Gotham City. Gotham. City. That just... sounds right. Mailbox. Van. Razor. It's strange how naming... changes things. I've walked these streets... every inch of this city... but I never had the words. I never knew the names. Now... it's like it's all changed. All new. Or maybe... Maybe it's me that's changing.
-  A special ability to predict my opponent's moves. That doesn't begin to describe it. Time... ran together. The future... blending... into the moment. A blink of an eye... the knife thrust that follows... both one. It was like... like I could predict my opponent's moves. Okay, that does describe it. But it doesn't do it justice.
Damian Wayne/Robin
-  Father, I'm sure you'll be angry with me for disobeying you again but I don't care, I will not let you fight Leviathan alone. You need me and I will always be at your side. Because it will be hard for me to say these words face to face, I want you to know that Mother may have givenme life, but you taught me how to live. Love and respect your son Damian
-  I don't want to end up like Ducard... without a moral compass... I don't want to turn into a NoBody... I want to be like you. I've always wanted to be like you.
-  I'm sure you didn't leave your hole tonight thinking you'd get your ass kicked by a ten-year-old!
-  I'm not the one in a ship filled with alien freaks, so how about shutting up and letting me work on keeping you safe, father!
Duke Thomas/Signal
- Someone told me that the problem with youth is the inability to accept your own mortality. I wouldn't consider this one of my problems
-  Sometimes you're wrong. Sometimes there is a place for you at the table. Some mysteries may never be solved by you alone. Sometimes you don't have to prove yourself repeatedly -- because you're confident about your purpose. And sometimes you just have to get to work for everything to work out.
-  not to mention you tire stealing genius, i’m not robin!
-  My career of choice has crazy hours, bad benefits, and doesn't pay. But it's the dream I never knew I always had. Mom, dad... I'm going into the vigilante business. I hope I live to tell you all about it.
Harper Row/Blue bird
-  I want training. Proper training. Tim's great at the tech stuff, but so am I. I want to know how to karate chop someone in the neck so their eyeballs pop out. I want to know the cool stuff.
-  Sometimes all it takes is a few words to change your life. For me it took seven. Seven words, spoken in the dark.
-  And you thought "Oh, Hey, I'm going to just talk to the scariest-looking bastard in the Narrows and see what he thinks"?
-  I never had a choice - but only because this is what I want, more than anything. And I was going to do this. I've told you that, again and again
Jean-Paul Valley/Azreael
-  You aren't asking if I'm okay, Lucas. You are asking if I can fight. I am angrier than I have ever been in my life, and I am sharing my mind with one murderous AI, and another one modeled off the world's most dangerous vigilante. Yes Lucas. I am ready to fight
-  Nomoz...he’s the one who came for me...he’s the one who broke me. For the greater glory of God
Feel free to add onto this list. I would love to know everyone’s favorite quotes.

Golden Tongue (Bias x Reader) Epilogue
One year and three months later.
“Two burgers please,” you say once it’s your turn to order, “One cookies-and-cream milkshake,” You can’t wait to stuff that burger down your throat, you’re so hungry.
“Nothing to drink with the other burger?” the cashier asks.
You shake your head, “Not when you’re eating both,”
You still work as a taxi driver, not entirely hating your job. Being on the road felt better than sitting behind a desk. Although it still resulted in the same butt-numbing sensation.
You’re almost done with one burger when your phone chimes. Someone needs to be picked up a few blocks away from you. You accept the offer before other drivers can steal the catch. You thought of ignoring it, but decide against it. You’re almost done with your meal anyways. Stuffing the last piece into your mouth, you grab your other burger and shake as you push out the door.
Living normally since your life took a turn over a year ago wasn’t easy. You dealt with guilt and depression to the point where you had to go to psychologist. Of course, once you confessed your inner pain to someone, you immediately wiped their memories clean of it.
Eventually the pain began to numb. Thoughts of Jesse no longer crushed you. Thoughts of the people you killed no longer crippled you. Thoughts of B/N passed over you, like soft waves that lap onto a lakeshore. Other times, thoughts of him felt like the ocean waves; heavy, suffocating, and roaring.
All in all, you felt okay. You often thought back to the past. Wanting to hang out with Jesse like before. Wanting to feel B/N’s arms around you, to feel his kisses again. You even missed using your powers as wildly as you did that night. You understood why Adra revelled in the power he obtained. It was addictive.
Even though you took Adra’s power, his abilities were too inhumane to practice on anyone. Shockwaves, you banned yourself from using it. But he was also able to read minds if the topic was presented to him, but without pain or coercion, it didn’t always work.
As for the other powers you used, it seemed to only work if the person was in close proximity. Even B/N’s power began to subside after a while. You could no longer control people. Being normal really was...boring.
However, there would be moments you’d pick up someone in your car and they’d surprise you. You’d hear their thoughts, with them unable to hear yours. Your eyesight once got significantly better one night, only to find out the student you carried had night vision. Someone even had the power to see dead people, resulting in you almost crashing and them begging you to take their power.
You meet lots of interesting people on the road.
Now, as you drink your milkshake, arriving at the destination, you wonder who you’ll meet this time.
You arrive at a cooperate building, the kind that makes you bend your head back to look to the top. You lean over your steering wheel to get a better look at the name through your window.
“N...U...A Corporations,” you sound out. Your mind doesn’t process it right away, but once it does you almost choke on a Oreo chunk. The back door of your car opens, the passenger sliding into the back seat.
You have no time to think or react.
You slowly turn around, staring at B/N. He’s in a black suit with an open collared silver silk shirt.
Your heart is slamming against your chest at the sudden sight of him.
“Hi,” he smiles breathlessly.
B/N didn’t feel like driving, as usual. So when his employees suggested he use a taxi app, he almost forgot those existed. He was so used to flagging them down. He put his information in, selected his destination which was a restaurant to have dinner with a few executives.
Did he really have to go?
He waits for a driver to accept to take him. He felt quite stupid looking at this app. He’s about to cancel when someone already accepts. The picture of the driver renders him motionless.
He hadn’t seen her face in so long. He didn’t even have a picture of her. And here she was, smiling in the small photo. He taps the image, trying to get a better look at her but it doesn’t work.
His hands are shaking, his heart beating way too fast. Even his armpits are sweating. It’s been over a year and he still feels this way. He hasn’t seen her since, and now he’s about to be in her presence?
Fate really has a sense of humor. And he’s about to throw up.
He runs to the bathroom, checking himself in the mirror. His hair is parted at the side to give a professional look. A look he didn’t even like.
“I look like an idiot,”
He wets his hands, running his fingers through his hair. Should he go for a pushed-back look, or kinda-in-the-face look? He checks the phone, signaling that she’s almost here. Doesn’t matter.
He rushes back to his office, pulling his secretary aside, “Smell me. How do I smell?”
He didn’t mean to command her, but she sniffs him without hesitation, “You smell nice, sir. Very expensive,”
He snaps his fingers, “Good,”
He rushes for the elevator. She’s here and waiting for him. Will she notice the company name? Will she drive away before or once she sees him? He gets inside the car quickly and she turns, shocked to see him. Her mouth is parted and he can see the Oreo cookie residue on her teeth.
“Hi,” Idiot, you sound expectant.
Her eyes are darting everywhere; she must be so confused.
“Um. Hi,” she rests her drink down, wiping her mouth. He expects more to be said, but she faces forward, tapping in the destination he’s to go to. He sighs silently, calming his nerves.
Did he expect huge excitement? He wasn’t sure. He was simply happy to see her. She’s driving in silence, refusing to look in the mirror where she’d meet his eyes. He remembers the first time she drove him in her car. He was such an entitled asshole then. He smiles at the memory.
“How’ve you been?” he asks, “You look well,”
“Oh,” her eyes meet his momentarily in the mirror, “I’ve been good. You?”
He nods, “I’ve been good, too,”
“NUA Corporations? You really did it?”
He nods, not surprised she remembered, “I did everything the way Jesse wanted,”
“That’s nice,” More awkward silence. He can tell she’s uncomfortable, “How’s your parents?”
“They’re good. Traveling more,”
She nods. Her shoulders are tense, hands tight on the steering wheel. The conversation is so strained he feels constricted for her.
It doesn’t take long to get to the restaurant. He doesn’t have to hand her cash like the last time, the app does it for him. He steps out the car, but peeks his head in to speak to her.
“Would you mind picking me back up?” he asks.
“Um... I’m not sure I’ll be available, but I’ll see,”
“Oh,”
“You could just use the app again,”
He chuckles, “I hate this thing. I’ll just flag a taxi,”
She seems to be thinking and he’s hoping she won’t say no.
Seeing her so suddenly made him realize how badly he missed her. Could they go out for drinks? A restaurant? Anything? He wants to know how her life has been, he wants to tell her how he’s been. He just wants to talk to her, and the look on her face shows that she doesn’t want to.
Her extended silence lowers his hopefulness. He’s about to say not to worry about it, but she responds with, “Sure. I’ll pick you up,”
He bites his lip to keep from grinning like a fool, “Thank you,”
She hands him her business card, “Call me on this when you’re ready,”
He takes it, admiring the simple artistry, “You have a business card,” he looks at her and he feels proud, “It suits you,”
The faintest of smiles is her response, her gaze finally holding his. He closes the door, almost wanting to skip out on this dinner but he resists. She’s going to pick him up. He’ll make this dinner quick.
Should I have told him? you wonder.
You’re nibbling on your second burger. It’s not as hot as you wanted it, but it’s not cold either.
You heard what he wanted to say. You heard his thoughts. And it took everything in you not to react to what he was thinking.
He missed you that much?
But did you miss him? Or did you bury all that happened that year, including how you felt about him?
Or is it because you were still hurt by him? Did you even like him anymore?
You roll your eyes, putting your burger down. What a dumb question.
You sigh, leaning your head back. Too much to think about.
Seeing B/N caused all your emotions to resurface. You didn’t even realize you suppressed them. But sometimes it felt good to just ignore your inner thoughts and pretend as if nothing bothered you. A delusional life, but it kept you going.
Within an hour and a half, B/N calls you and you head back to him. This time he opens the front door, “May I?”
He’s so forward. You nod, feeling antsy with him so close to you. Why are you acting this way?
“Where do I go?”
“Back to the building,” he says, surprisingly. You thought he would’ve asked you to go out somewhere like he thought.
Stopping in front of the building, he turns to you.
“Would you like to see inside?”
You must admit you’re curious as to how B/N brought Jesse’s dream to life. You nod, turning off your car.
It’s late now, most of the employees are gone and the security remains, acknowledging B/N as he steps into the polished lobby.
Everywhere looks and smells expensive.
“This place looks like it cost millions of dollars,” you say as you observe everything.
B/N presses the elevator button, “Just a couple,” he smiles at you.
So many levels. You chew on your nail as a way to avoid looking at him. He takes you to the top floor where his office resides.
“This room is the planning room,” he flicks on the light.
You look at the walls. It’s literally a map to success, “Jesse was very thorough. But I had to make some adjustments due to the change in economy and with people not always being predictable,”
So much detail. It resembled a map detectives use to catch a criminal. Three destinations with smaller road to leading to it.
“What’s your goal?” you ask him.
“Well, putting abandoned buildings and lots to use. Instead of creating more retail places we don’t need, we’ve incorporated them into homes for the less fortunate,”
“And who’s idea was that?”
He looks at you, “Mine,”
You actually didn’t expect that from him.
“And you’ve done all of this without the use of your ability?”
He smirks, turning to the mini fridge, “A little persuasion never hurt anyone,”
He hands you a canned drink, “I drive. I can’t drink,”
He turns the can so that you can see the label, “It’s soda,”
You take the can from his hand and he walks you to his office, “It’s roomy. Must be bright during the day,” you say looking at the large windows.
He nods and you step to the window, overlooking the city at night.
“It’s an amazing view,” you sigh.
“The best,”
You turn to him, seeing him leaning against the window with one ankle crossed over the other. You know he’s been watching you.
“Why’d you bring me up here?” you ask him.
“A few reasons,” he stands up straight, walking towards you, “I haven’t seen you in a long time. I wanted to show you this place. And,” he stands before you, “I never got to thank you for all that you did,”
“That’s behind us now,”
“True. But thank you. You did a lot for me during that time, more than I can imagine. I wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for you,”
You turn from the view of city, a sight you’ve been using to avoid looking at him. Once your eyes settle on him, your stomach starts to flutter.
You open your soda, hoping the bubbles will help distract you from the butterflies in your belly but instead it erupts, spilling onto you and his carpet.
You find a garbage, holding the can over it as you apologize profusely. Why did you swing it in your hand as you walked?
He dabs napkins onto the stain, handing you some to clean yourself as well.
“I’m so sorry,”
“It’s just carpet, Y/N,” he seems to think nothing of this, “It can get cleaned,”
He’s speaking so gently. How is this the same person?
You watch him as he cleans the mess and disposes of the napkins, “You’ve changed,” you observe.
“Change is required for growth, if one is willing,”
You’re surprised at his response, “Who are you?”
At this, he throws his head back in laughter and the sight of him laughing is so pleasing to see that all you can do is stare at him. Jesse’s death really broke him but he seems to have mended as best.
He stops laughing, watching you who happens to still be staring at him.
It’s dark in his office, the night light casting in enough brightness to allow you to see what you need to see. And what you do see is the way his dark hair falls against the side of his face. How his silver shirt glistens when he moves. And how his eyes are like black stars, twinkling as he looks at you.
“I am so sorry for what I did to you,” he says, which wasn’t what you were expecting to hear, “I know that my words hurt you, my lack of compassion and selfishness to your needs did damage. But I need you to know how sorry and grateful I am to you,”
To your surprise, your eyes are burning. You bite your bottom lip, trying to get a hold of yourself. Is this what you needed to hear all along? An apology from the person who hurt you the most and who happened to be the one you cared about the most?
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you when you needed me,” he steps close to you.
Your chest is tight and you’re trying so hard to keep yourself together. You take a step back, putting your hand out to keep him from coming closer. He doesn’t take another step.
“I thought I was over this,” you whisper. All those months of therapy and for what?
“Y/N,” Why did he have to say your name like that?
You cover your face with your hands as you cry silently. You realized you needed to hear him say this.
“You really-” you take a breath, your voice breaking as you look at him, “You really hurt me then,”
By the look on his face, you know he feels exactly what you need him to feel. He looks pained and steps forward but you put your hand out again to keep him away and he doesn’t cross your barrier.
“I’m sorry...” is all he can say.
Slowly, he reaches for your levitated hand, holding onto your fingertips. You don’t pull away from him and he takes this opportunity to bring your hand to his face. He holds your hand against his cheek.
“Forgive me,” his breath is warm against your skin, “Please, forgive me,” you hear him say but he isn’t speaking. His kisses each knuckle with an apology and your tears cease as you watch him.
“I forgive you. I forgave you already,” you admit. He looks up surprised, “I meant to tell you I took Adra’s power, but it never came up. I’ve been hearing your thoughts directed at me this whole time,”
You’re not sure what his response will be, but he raises his eyebrows with a pleased expression, “This makes things way easier,” he blinks, “Wait, how much did you hear?”
“Enough?”
He gently pulls you towards him by your hand and you don’t fight him. You welcome his touch, and it feels so wonderful to have him hold you again.
Your face is against his shoulder as he embraces you, his cheek against your temple. He sighs, swaying side to side with you in his arms.
He tilts your face up, smoothing your hair, “Do you have any idea how much I missed you?” His confession has your tummy swirling. He said it with such ease and honesty, that you didn’t doubt that he missed you at all.
“How much?” you ask him.
“Hm?”
“How much did you miss me?”
“Search my thoughts,”
“Doesn’t work like that,”
He thinks for a moment, looking at your face. His mind is quiet, not ready to let you in just yet.
“I missed you so much that I took a taxi everywhere I could just incase one of them would be you.” he’s playing with your hair as he speaks, touching your face in admiration, “I’ve been to the beach you’ve taken me to over thirty times, hoping you’d be there. But now I go simply because you liked going.”
As he exposes his thoughts, he presses your palm against his cheek and he looks content; entrusting himself to you.
“I lived with regret and accepted that I would never get you back because of what I did.”
The more he speaks, the tender his face becomes as he looks at you, “I missed having you by my side, even though it was short and I took it for granted. And I miss you even now that you’re standing right in front of me,”
You’re looking at him as if it’s the first time you’re ever seeing them. You’ve both grown in each other’s absence. Even the way that he looks at you is different from before.
You don’t ignore the emotions welling up within you; you welcome them. You accept that your feelings for him never left, as well as your attraction.
He smooths your cheek, wiping away the undried tears left on your face. His other hand is still on your lower back, keeping you in place against him and you feel what you didn’t think you’d be feeling so soon.
“Already?” you raise your eyebrows, wondering if you should acknowledge that you’re just as excited to be with him.
“He wants what he wants,” he says shyly, detaching his hips from yours for your comfort.
But you pull him back to you, surprising him, “She wants what she wants too,”
A full five seconds of you both staring at each other and wondering if this is really about to happen.
“Fuck,” he thinks.
You kiss him, and just like that night on the couch, nothing more needs to be said or done for him to respond. He slides his jacket off for better movement, his arms immediately locking around you.
His touch is familiar, his lips bringing memories of you both together back to life. You didn’t realize how much you missed him until you saw him, and you didn’t know how much you longed for him until he touched you.
You’re still kissing each other when you feel his desk bump your legs. Instinctively, he leans you back but there’s too much stuff there to remove with the sweep of his hand.
He’s impatient.
Next thing you know you’re against the window, trying to carefully unbutton his silk shirt because it’s silk! But he doesn’t care about that. He pops the remaining buttons, peeling his shirt off.
“You think anyone’s gonna look up this high?” you ask him, noting that people could see you both through the window if they wanted to.
“I don’t care,” his voice is husky against your ear, his fingers skimming the skin on your stomach as he lifts your shirt over your head.
You hold his chin, “Slow down. I’m not going anywhere,”
He actually pauses and you forget you have his power. But once it wears off, he continues.
“Do you know how long I waited for you?” He gives you a look so alluring and sinful that you know tonight won’t end the way you thought.
His mouth is on your neck, his teeth giving just the right amount of pressure to make your knees cave, but he keeps you up by pinning your hands against the glass.
“Why would I slow down?”
Did he think his night would turn out this way when he woke up this morning? Not in a million years. Did he hope it would once she kissed him? Absolutely.
He motions towards the couch and she hesitates for a moment before walking ahead of him. She’s topless, still in her jeans and bra and the sight of her walking has him restraining himself.
She stands at the couch, hugging her arms around herself.
“Cold?” he asks.
“Nervous,”
“Why?”
"Is this a one time thing for us?”
“Did you not listen to a word I said tonight?”
She sighs, “Still,”
“Is it not obvious?”
“What is?”
“That there’s no one else for me?”
She takes a moment to reply, “You haven’t met many people then,”
“Is there anyone else who would literally step in the line of fire for me?”
She shakes her head and he smiles, pulling her towards him as he kisses her forehead. He wants to tell her so much more but he can’t. Not yet.
“I love you, Y/N,” he thinks to himself alone, knowing now isn’t the right time to tell her, “I loved you then when you took those flames for me. I loved you even when I watched you walk away from me, and even more now,”
No, he can’t tell her this right now.
But he can do something for her that could be the physical equivalent.
He tilts her chin up, kissing her softly on her lips.
“Will you let me repay you?” he asks.
“Repay me for what?” her eyes are closed, content by his touch.
“For everything you’ve done,”
"How?”
He pokes her chest, pushing her against the couch. Getting on his knees, he unbuckles her belt, unfastening the button in one go.
“Like this,”
His movements are swift yet unhurried as he tugs your jeans off of your body.
Fondly, he caresses your face, as if calming you. But excites you once more once his fingers descend down your lips, your breast and stopping at your waist.
“Will you let me?” he asks once more.
All you can do is nod.
He leans forward, kissing you as he thinks a familiar question, “Do you have any idea of the power you possess over me?” You’re pretty sure it’s the other way around right now.
His lips travel down your neck, and slowly over your breasts. As he grasps your waist, his tongue leaves wet trails over your stomach.
“Do you know how long I craved you?”
With his middle finger, he traces the creased, damp lining through your underwear, touching your most sensitive area.
Your breath catches in your throat, your legs instinctively widening a bit.
He looks pleased.
He hooks his fingers around your underwear, and you lift your body up in response as he slides them down your legs.
Excitement is coursing through your body and it makes no sense to hide it.
He lifts your legs onto his bare shoulders, kissing your inner thighs with his eyes closed.
You clench your fists the closer his mouth gets but before he gets there, he looks up at you.
“Tell me, did you forget?” he asks.
“Forget what?” you respond breathlessly.
He opens your legs wider, his face lowering and your mind submitting.
With his eyes locked on yours, he drags his tongue heavily and slowly between your lips as he thinks to you,
“I’m your slave to desire.”
Someone requested more moments cute between them, did I deliver?

Review #53 - Timeless Love series
Untouched Perfection & Flawless Perfection Author: Kristin Mayer Genre: Billionaires & CEOs, Contemporary Romance, Criminals, Pregnancy & Babies, Romantic Suspense Rating: ★★★★★ Recommendation: worth reading; might read again Summary: Life has become at a monotonous routine Knoah Knox since tragedy struck a few years back. All of that changes when she meets Garrick Shaw. Their connection is immediate and undeniable, but numerous surprises, revelations, and threats are thrown at the new couple. Can their love survive all the internal and external obstacles?
Female Lead: Oh, Knoah. This was really her story, and Mayer expertly kept both books solely in Knoah’s POV. Let me say this. There was honestly a point in the second book where I wondered if Knoah was a well-rounded character instead of just someone who reacted to situations she was thrown in. At that time, I did not see all parts of her personality and thought there might even be something lacking. But the fact of the matter was that even with every tragedy and revelation and traumatic event thrown at her, Knoah remained exactly who she was and that person was a kind, loyal, decent, strong, resilient, vulnerable, and wonderful soul. I was originally looking for maybe more extreme personality traits, but I was so wrong in doing that. Knoah was near perfect the way she was. I could not have asked for a better female lead, really. She had flaws—stagnant behavior, regression to some catatonia after tragedy; she had strength—saving a life when she could, showing determination and backbone. Heck, Mayer even gave Knoah moments of sass and boldness that I was surprised to find but just made me love this character even more. For all that Knoah was put through, I thought she had rightful reactions and handled everything as well as could be expected if not better. Male Lead: Garrick Shaw, ladies and gentlemen. A man like Garrick is what dreams are made of. He was such a presence—and not in that aggressively commanding and authoritative way billionaires and CEOs are usually written but as Knoah’s crutch and support and protector and husband. Garrick was extremely protective of Knoah, but he wasn’t unnecessarily alpha, keeping Knoah in the dark and making her do whatever he wanted because he thought it was for her benefit. He observed; he paid attention; he understood her needs; he communicated. Garrick put Knoah first in everything. It was evident that he cared about Knoah and loved her more than anything. He made her his priority. His unconditional and undying love for her was genuinely one of the most romantic, lovely, sexy, and beautiful things I’ve read. And, I mean, the fact that he just knew with Knoah? Good God. There was no beating around the bush, no need for prolonged sexual tension, no will-they-won’t-they mess. Garrick knew Knoah was the one for him. He wasn’t exactly looking for love, but he wasn’t opposed to it either. He knew. He confirmed what he thought. He acted. He made known his feelings, his intentions. Garrick was mature, protective, RESPECTFUL. I mean, have you ever read the male lead in any other book swearing to keep condoms around for the girl and not gripe or make it seem inconvenient? No! But Garrick did it, and he did it with love—because of love. I could honestly go on and on about Garrick because he was unequivocally perfect in the best way possible. Plot & Writing: Holy shamboozles. Okay. I was very surprised at where Mayer took this Timeless Love series and the amount of things that were put into the two books. There were some predictable things, and then there were surprises. There were some decisions that I disagreed with, and then there were those that I wholeheartedly supported. Were the two books perfect and without flaws? No. But the good far outweighed the bad, which made this series one I could not put down.
Plot first. Mayer really packed these two books with a lot of plot twists and whatnot. To me, the series was kind of a The Face on the Milk Carton retelling; Mayer just swapped out the coming-of-age, teenage angst stuff for a MOB PLOT. Actually? It worked well. Even though Knoah and Garrick wanted nothing to do with the mob, they were of course unfortunately sucked into it for a while to up the ante in the series. But goodness, all the things Mayer made Knoah go through—to name a few, her first husband’s death, finding out she was kidnapped as a baby, being kidnapped again, two miscarriages. This woman was put through the ringer and yet came out seemingly better and stronger because of it. There really was a lot put in there, and at times I thought Mayer could’ve cut back a little in exchange for more introspection/development, but everything did ultimately serve a purpose with no loose ends. Kudos to the author for adequately tying everything up properly.
Despite the series being very much Knoah’s story, her relationship with Garrick was still central and of the utmost importance. The best thing Mayer did for the relationship was ground it and ensure that it was solid and unbreakable so that whatever was thrown at them would not be their end. I really loved that I didn’t need to worry about Garrick and Knoah’s relationship, that they were it for each other, end of story. Such a relationship was extremely necessarily again for all that Mayer put her female lead through. The one small gripe I had with the relationship was its pacing. Mayer was selling a story about love at first sight. Did I believe in it? Honestly, yes. But did that mean I was super on board for the couple to get engaged basically a week after they met and then married so soon afterwards? No. I already was sold on the idea that Garrick and Knoah were it for each other. I did not need a quick engagement and marriage to confirm that for me. And though I kind of understood that those extremely happy and romantic moments helped counterbalance the grime of the mob plot, I personally found the fast marriage a little unnecessary.
Speaking of pacing, I can say that that was my only major issue with the whole series. Why, Mayer, was everything jammed so tightly in time? I personally thought the series would’ve been exactly the same even if things were spaced out far more. The relationship could’ve been even further strengthened if they weren’t engaged and married so quickly. The mob plot events could’ve been further bolstered if not everything happened literally back-to-back. I mean, Garrick and Knoah got engaged and within the span of twenty-four hours, she found out that she was Hastings’ sister because she was kidnapped as a child and her parents—who thought she was their granddaughter and hid that from her—weren’t her biological parents after all. If Mayer just set more time in between, then she could’ve avoided that ‘four months later’ thing near the end of Flawless Perfection.
Other than pacing, I thought Mayer did an excellent job writing the series. I was pleasantly surprised at the plot decisions she made—most of them actually contradicting the predictable ways I thought some things could’ve gone. I loved that she just made Kurt a good and close friend of Knoah’s. I loved that there was no rivalry between Knoah’s mothers. I loved that villain deaths in the series did not affect the soundness of her mob plot and negate those issues. I loved that there was communication between Garrick and Knoah. I loved that Knoah wanted to work, AND THAT GARRICK KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG BECAUSE HE KNEW THAT SHE DIDN’T LIKE TO COOK. Holy Jesus, I loved that part so much! The fact that Garrick knew Knoah and found a way to make her feel productive and of value instead of reducing her to just a housewife/homemaker. The fact that Knoah wanted to work and be a productive member of society! There really were so many things Mayer did right in this book—enough to make me get over the unfortunate pacing—that made this series great. Favorite Part(s): Garrick offering Knoah a job because he was weirded out that someone commented about how much Knoah was cooking and loved to cook because he knew the latter to be false and it might have been partially his fault that she had been confined indoors all day everyday so he sought a way to fix things and make Knoah happy. HE WAS IN TUNE TO HER NEEDS. Good God, what more can you want from the person you love!
But there were so many other things too. Knoah initiating sex at Garrick’s office. The fact that love scenes were not obscenely explicit but still intimate and kind of beautiful. The strength of their bond and love. The fact that neither of them pushed each other in the beginning. The fact that Knoah seeing a therapist was not a big deal and even encouraged. So many good things! Final Thoughts: Untouched Perfection and Flawless Perfection were near perfect. This series was a great surprise and find. Was it a little cheesy at times? Yeah, especially when it came to intertwining the book titles into the story. But I was so hooked on the characters and the direction of the plot. Again, the good far outweighed the bad here, which made this a five star series for me. I would definitely recommend the Timeless Love series.

I have to rent a car for 2 weeks for business. Supposely, the cost should be reimbursed to me by a company after the assingment is done. Not sure if I can truly trust that. But then again, I worry about what might happen if accidents occur. The cost of rental car will be reimbursed by a company. Question about my car insurance?
My current insurance is with state farm; just a question; if i got hit by someone without car insurance and is their fault; they dont have any money to pay for my damage; since i dont have the uninsure motor coverage but i have collision with deductible of 500 dollar; would my collision cover me after i pay the 500 dollar? i guess my real question is what is the point of having uninsure motor coverage when i have collision coverage? would i need both? or just collision would be sufficient?
Low-cost health insurance company?
I have been trying to do research on the state of health insurance in the US and am not getting much informative stuff. What is stopping a private, non- or for-profit company setting up a lower-premium health insurance company? these are the possible problems i have come up with so far: - the insurance claims will far exhaust the float (is this true?) - the demand will be overwhelming (but this shouldn't be too bad considering the insurance business is not heavy on capital expenditures?) - it would be difficult to cover the high costs of drugs and specialist medical costs with lower premiums - getting hands on enough and reliable data in order to calculate proper costs, probabilities of claims against a potential pool of funds, etc. possible solutions would of course begin with restricting the pool of people granted insurance (restrict by probability of claiming insurance) until more data can be gathered to offer insurance to less healthy candidates.""

Insurance on a cbr 600rr for a 20 year old in California?
Ive had my normal license (California) for 3 years and just got my motorcycle license. I am looking to buy a street bike, a sport bike specifically. I've looked at all the sporty bikes from 250 to 1000 and I plan on getting a 600 because I've been riding dirtbikes since I could walk so I know I'd get bored of a 250 but at the same time I know I'd kill myself on a 1000. I have a clean driving record aside from one speeding ticket(wasn't even speeding horribly) and a couple parking tickets. So what I'm ultimately trying to figure out is what the cost of my insurance would be and what insurance provider would give me the best coverage on my bike. I know I plan on getting liability since it is cheaper but any and all insight or examples would be very helpful. *people on yahoo love to hate on questions, so if you're one of those poeple, don't even comment. I know how bikes work and I've ridden them before, just need advice on insurance. Thank you!!""

Had a car crash; how do you give insurance details?
OK, I let my attention slip and slightly rear-ended a car in front of me (oldish Mercedes), guy was surprisingly pretty cool about it. Damage is: (my car) my number plate fell off and very slight bumper bar damage; (his car) back bumper damage, back boot doesn't close properly. My car is insured completely, but how do I give him my insurance details? Do I just say the company that I'm with or something? Or I call my insurance up and get a number? Also will I have any financial repercussions from this, or does the insurance pay the lot for me and the victim? Will my rating be damaged and have to pay more for insurance? Different Car insurance rates for different cars?
Alright, I'm 18 and a freshman in college this year, and I commute there 20 minutes everyday to save money (room & board is around 15k). And the car I have now is not really reliable anymore. Its a 94 Cutlass Cierra, and within the last month the Heating Core, and the Alternator have both went, and I've had to sink 600 dollars into it. I'm looking at getting a new car next summer, and I have basically narrowed it down to two choices. An Eclipse (Mitsu) or Cougar (Mercuy). I know its going to cost more to have a sports car, but what I want to know, is how much the different prices for insurance would differ for these two cars. I was going to do one online, but I saw it needed a VIN, and I don't have the car yet. I'm thinking about asking my car insurance company for quotes, but I doubt they would do it. Does anyone know the prices to insure these two cars for a 19 year old. Or a link or any information would be appreciated.""

The problem was that my name wasn't written on the insurance card but Im still insured under my dads name. I told him about it and he called the school, after that he called me and told me not to talk to the people that were in charge of giving out the permits because my name wasn't under the policy it was just that car that was under it and who ever drove it was covered. He also said that he doesn't want to pay 1400 to add me on the insurance even though he makes 6000 a mont, and the last thing i want to do is park my car in the neighborhood next to the school if i did that there would be no point in getting a car.
