Stahma/Kenya and number 4 "I kind of like the secretiveness."

Kenya smiled flirtatiously, eyeing up a potential client to determine if she was worth the time and effort. The woman gave every indication she was a gulinite miner - some of Kenya’s best clientele - but Kenya had never seen her before.

“New to town?” Kenya asked, leaning against the bar. “Or just new here?” 

“Been here about a month,” the woman said with a smile. “But I’m loving it so far. Not a lot of towns like this in the world.”

Kenya tilted her head to the side, letting her hair cascade over her shoulder. A well-rehearsed move. “In that case, if you’re looking for a little company, someone to show you the best this town has to offer…” Kenya glanced to the right, an attempt at seductive coyness that went awry when she found herself distracted by the woman entering the NeedWant. Stahma Tarr. A genuine smile crossed Kenya’s lips. She forgot she was working, forgot there was a potential client hanging on her every word. 

“Yes?” The woman asked, pulling Kenya back to reality.

“I, uh, I know just the person who can help you.” Kenya turned, reaching for the arm of another night porter. “Tirra can provide you with anything you need.” She shoved Tirra forward and instantly forgot about them both.

Kenya and Stahma locked eyes as they approached each other, the noise of the bustling crowd falling away. “I’m surprised to see you here,” Kenya said. 

“I missed you,” Stahma said, her voice low and warm. “It’s been three days.” 

“I would have called, but you know…” Kenya shrugged. “I couldn’t.”

“I know.” There was a hint of regret behind Stahma’s words, but she quickly added, “And yet, despite it all, I like the secretiveness. I like that I finally have something just for myself.”

Those words triggered an automatic response in Kenya. Stahma was not the first to say such things to her. They were practically following a script, so Kenya batted her eyelashes and asked, “want to go upstairs? You can have me all to yourself for as long as you’d like.” 

“Actually,” Stahma said. “Would you like to go to the market with me? I’m redecorating, and you have such wonderful taste.”

Kenya blinked in surprise. This wasn’t part of the script. “Really?” 

“Of course,” Stahma said. “I would not ask if I did not mean it.”

“I’d love to.” Kenya paused, ashamed to ask a question she desperately needed answered. “And you’re willing to be seen in public with me?” 

Stahma gently brushed her fingertips across the back of Kenya’s hand. A comforting gesture, unlikely to be noticed by onlookers. “You said it yourself. You designed this place and poured your heart and soul into it. Your taste is immaculate, and you have far more talent than the world acknowledges. I would be proud to enlist your help.”

Kenya glanced down at her feet in embarrassment, her heart melting. She could not describe how it felt to finally be seen as more than a pretty face, so she simply linked her arm with Stahma’s and said, “tell me about your project. I want to know everything so we can do it justice.”

Now Kenya must figure out how to live in a town that’s moved on without her, Amanda must learn to trust again, and Stahma must finally choose what side she’s on as the conflict between her son and her estranged husband reaches a point of no return.

A bitterly cold wind whipped Stahma’s long white hair away from her face, ripping through her thin wool coat like a warning. Her handmaiden, Alina, shivered at her side, but Stahma hardly felt the breeze. She hadn’t felt much of anything in months, not since she devoted her life to correcting her gravest mistake, to reviving her murdered lover.

Alina tried to catch Stahma’s gaze, but Stahma refused to acknowledge the girl’s warning. She already knew everything she would say. Why risk your life for a silly human prostitute? Sex was her profession. Are you sure she even loved you? Each of Alina’s questions reflected conventional Castithan wisdom. Humans died because they were weak, untrustworthy, and easily manipulated while Castithans triumphed through strength and brutality. Every Castithan knew this was the natural order of things.

But Alina had grown up on Earth and had never been in love. She could never understand the way Kenya had opened Stahma’s eyes to the endless potential of her new planet. Their relationship, however brief it may have been, meant so much more than a few hours of pleasure. Without Kenya, Stahma would still be a slave to her husband’s desires, painfully unaware of her own oppression.

Stahma was determined to prove she hadn’t dragged Alina on a fool’s errand, and she knew that as soon as Alina met Kenya, she would understand why Stahma had gladly bartered with criminals who wouldn’t hesitate to press a gun to her temple the moment they grew bored with her. Their threats never scared or deterred her. She knew how to read people, knew what they were thinking before they acted.

Most of them were foolish men, both human and Votan, who falsely viewed themselves as ruggedly handsome movie stars, the type of man who couldn’t fathom a woman posing any real threat. They saw her as a walking chivo, blind to her true nature until they fell to the ground in front of her, gasping for their last breaths of life.
