UN! FREAKING! BELIEVABLE! AGAIN!

0.001 seconds! Closest Cup Series finish ever! (Second-closest NASCAR finish in general behind the 2018 Xfinity Daytona opener at 0.0004!)
I'm not a Larson fan, but man is that the kind of clutch drive that reminds you the kind of driver you're watching. Whenever he ends up in the Hall of Fame, that final half-lap is one of the first clips they're showing.

Notes from Off Track (The Gross One)
- Starts with a rare Thim content warning: James learned more about his accident in this episode and it gets pretty gory. (I won’t post anything explicit on this lil review but if you want to know if it’s something you would be able to handle, feel free to DM me and I can summarise ❤️)
- Alex had a case of “the Mondays” with his face apparently
- James, Becky and Thim hung out (Becky and Thim are involved in making a film together) and had Mexican food and went for karaoke - Thim did a 7 minute song (The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald I think) and left in the middle of it (as did James and Becky whilst he was still on stage because he had too many friends)
- It’s coming up to 10 years since James’ accident and he was filming some stuff at the speedway last Friday and one of the guys from the safety team was there that day so he learned some new stuff about his accident (as I said - won’t discuss it here)
- Alex admitted to being a little queasy during the discussion, yet James cackled hysterically at certain points but mostly we’re glad he’s still here 🥹
- James can’t twerk and his bum isn’t the same on both sides, so apparently him and Alex are going to learn how to do this
- Kentucky!! They did a roadtrip in an EV, but obvs Alex is very emotionally invested in castle run and he didn’t do as well as they would have hoped, but they still had a good time
- Alex has also been playing golf (they’re all obsessed wtf) and flew to Charlotte on Monday for some sim time
- They discussed people getting married and having babies, and Alex said Conor is probably the last wedding he will go to - then they agreed on Colton, but said that might happen before Conor anyway
- James was sad that means wedding Josef Newgarden has less chances to appear in his life - and Alex said that hasn’t happened in the last 3+ years anyway (Ashley was at Alex’s wedding but not Josef who iirc was driving in IMSA or something that weekend) - then they agreed that the wedding Newgardens were not as prevalent in recent years. Sad for everyone.
- Decided they should make an annual party that’s a Wedding-style event without all the boring bits for their group of friends with a fake bachelor party and a fake wedding and rotate through the bachelor parties they all went on for theirs
- Alex and James have a new business plan that they hashed out on their roadtrip and said they would tell us soon
- They recorded Monday so before the thermal test but I’m sure there will be details next week
- James is going to Vegas and complained about the schedule. Thim and Alex are hanging out in Indy this weekend, but Becky is not going to vegas so who knows if Thim will go in her place (genuinely idk if they were joking)

The Great CD Roadtrip Continues! And, well. This one has really put my life in perspective.
When my siblings and I were children, my dad ripped the audio from a few Disney movies and put it onto cassette tapes that we could play in the car. Following this tradition, I made CDs of Cars 1 and Cars 3 when @the-kings-tail-fin and I roadtripped out through the Smokies and to Charlotte, and I have fond memories of sitting in terrible Kentucky Speedway postrace traffic, listening to Cars 1.
On this tank of gas, I learned that it's possible to listen to the first 63 minutes of Cars 1 NINE FULL TIMES IN A ROW, which honestly was fairly entertaining!
The line that stood out to me over this cycle was Mater explaining that Doc, as a doctor, could "fix just about anything" and "that's why we made him the judge." It makes me wonder what acute issue had needed fixing that made this come up, and what Doc had been able to do about it.
The hilarious part, though, is that the next CD up in the lineup is *not* Cars 1, Part 2. But when will I hear what happens next?!

The Indiana Klan didn’t allow Black drivers at the Indy500, but Hoosier Charlie Wiggins had an unquenchable need for speed.
On August 7, 1926, he cruised to victory in the Gold and Glory Sweepstakes championship, a segregated auto race for African American drivers.
Revving his engine in front of a thrilled crowd of 12,000 gathered at the Indiana State Fair Grounds, Wiggins took the lead in the 72nd lap.
The crowd was amazed but few knew the full scope of Wiggins’ wild style genius. The ‘Negro Speed King’ was a master mechanic and self-taught fuel scientist. He could diagnose ailing engines just by listening to them, and his touch was magic.
His "Wiggins Special” was powered by his own premium blend of oil and airplane fuel.
The Gold & Glory race itself was established by the Colored Speedway Association, a racially integrated automotive brain trust of five: African-American business leaders: Harry Dunnigton, William Rucker, George Lemon, Earnest Jay Buffet, Alvin D. Smith; and two white businessmen, Harry A. Earl and Oscar E. Schilling. The seven had come together in 1924 to sanction a national racing series for black drivers.
Wiggins was to go on to claim a trilogy of Gold & Glory wins, in 1931, 1932, and 1933.
Recounts race historian Tod Gould, Indycar driver Harry MacQuinn had asked Wiggins to loan him a car for a race in Louisville, Kentucky in 1928.
"Charlie agreed, on the condition he drive the tuning runs at the speedway himself," Gould says. "When the white spectators in Louisville saw a black man driving, they mobbed the pits. Arrested for his own protection, Wiggins was charged with speeding.”
Indycar pilot Bill Cummings knew what Wiggins could do. In 1934, he hired him to tune his racing car for the 500.
By day, Wiggins swept floors and posed as a humble janitor.
At night, he overhauled Cummings’ car and made it purr like a kitten. He won and set a track record.
“During the 1936 Gold and Glory Sweepstakes, Wiggins was involved in a 13-car crash that nearly took his life. He lost his right leg and vision in one eye, ending his racing career.
After designing and building his own wooden leg, Wiggins remained a mechanic and advocate for African American racing. He would also train other black mechanics for the rest of his life. Charlie Wiggins died in March 1979, at 82.”

While technically no longer a driver, James Hinchcliffe, known as Hinch, is still an integral part of the field. He remains friends with most of the drivers and serves as an informal liaison between them and the series, emailing drivers after each race asking for their concerns and forwarding them on to those in charge. Now in a broadcast role at NBC for Indycar and select IMSA races, Hinch does not rule out racing again, should the right opportunity arise. As of 2023, he has become a 'big F1 guy' commentating on select F1 races for F1TV
2019 ESPN Body Issue Controversy? Rumor has it that Arrow disapproved of James baring it all and this contributed to him being 'relieved of his duties.' James remained under contract for 2020, under which he was required to be with the team on race weekends and make sponsor appearances, but was free to pursue other opportunities. In 2020, Hinchcliffe joined NBC Sports as analyst for IndyCar races and select IMSA races when he did not enter as a driver. Read the ESPN article and view the pictures.
Hinch often referred to himself as the class clown of Indycar while he was a driver, bringing his slightly irreverent sense of humor out as often as he could. He’s a natural in front of a camera, entertaining fans throughout his whole career. He’s very intelligent and capable of explaining complex concepts in an easy to understand way. He’s got a sunny personality, is very personable and is almost always full of good humor and enthusiasm.

🦷 ⇢ share some personal wisdom or a life hack you swear on aka fix my life z
🐪 ⇢ what's the best thing about living in the desert and how much do you think about sam and dean traipsing around your hood?
cheaterrrrrr
🦷 ⇢ share some personal wisdom or a life hack you swear on aka fix my life z
swear to god i thought that was like fake tits attached to a corset. what are emojis.
bud i have no wisdom you don't already know, haha. What are some things. (1) Don't Put The Pussy On A Pedestal is something I legit try to live my life by, aka don't let perfection be the enemy of the good, don't psych yourself out of doing something because you've convinced yourself you can't, or you're not enough, or you can't reach it. What is the point of that. Just try it and if you don't make it then, fuck it, you'll make it another time, or you'll have made something and that's better than nothing, always, every time. (We sometimes live up to this wisdom better than at other times.) Uhh can I think of something else. (2) Sincerity is better than irony in almost every application; loving stuff is better than haterade; looking for the good and what worked in things is better than picking apart flaws to make yourself feel superior; most things don't actually matter that much. All of which are related. Not to do toxic positivity bc that's gross, and you know I'll leap onto a Dabbhate train whenever one is steaming by, but like -- marinating in that shit is gross and you gotta purge it and then look for what's better, bc otherwise you come off like a bitter unsufferable cuss, and who wants to be a cuss? not me. (3) Standing sidealong to the cutting board is a really useful technique to make sure your wrist&forearm are aligned so that you don't introduce stress while cutting up veg etc. You can try to slice with the knife at a ~45 degree angle to your body but that's hard to maintain, and then your wrist gets bent back slightly unnaturally. Stand with one hip angled more toward the counter and you'll find you get less fatigue over meal prep.
🐪 ⇢ what's the best thing about living in the desert and how much do you think about sam and dean traipsing around your hood?
best thing: fairly predictable weather, even if sometimes it's trying to kill you. but like in my desert in particular there are not earthquakes or tornados or tsunamis or blizzards, and flash floods do happen but they're very rare, and fires happen but tbh those seem to happen everywhere anymore so the desert can't particularly be blamed. Also there's something for a high blue morning where the sky goes up for a hundred miles and there are mountains around and the air's dry and life is something sort of hard-won, and more precious for it. In Kentucky they don't get excited about grass, I bet.
That said I don't much imagine Sam and Dean in my biome, haha. Too saturated with all that Vancouver, I guess. I have put them in the desert occasionally but never, like, at the Bashful Bandit on Speedway or at one of the no-tells on Miracle Mile. Which is too bad bc some of these things are like custom-designed for Dean Winchester. Too allergic to self-insertion to indulge ;-; I should free myself ;-;

For my cars fanfic, I have researched all of the following:
-Mechanical engineering and classic car restoration practices including, but not limited to, chrome electroplating, sheet metal repair pre bondo, types of paint used in cars before the advent of acrylic polyurethane, the sorcery that is metallic paint, etc...
-How to rebuild the front shock and wheel assemblies for a 1949 Oldsmobile 88 Rocket. Someone was nice enough to scan in the contents of an old garage manual...and it's a fascinating read. http://edge-op.org/1949_Oldsmobile/index.php#contents
-Prohibition, and bootlegging in Dawsonville and Atlanta GA, during the 20s, 30s, and 40s
-How to make moonshine
-How to accurately convey, in writing, the fact that one of my OCs speaks with a heavy Appalacian accent (SE Kentucky sub-dialect)
-The origins of NASCAR and how it tied into bootlegging and prohibition
-Historical layouts of the Hudson Motorcar Company, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac factories in Detroit, MI
-Logging practices and logging machinery/equipment
-The size of a 51' Hudson Hornet's gas tank
-Classic stock car racing venues, especially Langhorne Speedway and all the crazy shit that went down there

Day 5. Friday Sept 6: Nashville Tennessee to Huntsville, Grant, Talledega, and Montgomery, Alabama. 486 kms.
Today, I go from the corn, soybeans, and livestock of Kentucky to the corn, cotton, chickens, and peanuts of Alabama - America's 24th most populous state and the heart of Dixie.
Tumblr media
My day starts heading south from Nashville towards the Alabama border just 100 miles away and ultimately Montgomery, the capital of Alabama. On the way, I pass by Huntsville, Alabama's most populous city (222,000), and home of the US Space and Rocket Center.
The thing I notice first and foremost, however, is Alabama's red subsoil, caused by a combination of iron oxides and good drainage and perfect for the growth of corn and cotton.
For some reason, I am also struck by a feeling of "have and have nots" as evidenced not only by the homes and farms I pass but also by the preponderance of Baptist churches which always seem to flourish in the poorer areas. Alabama is not poor. It is America's 33rd richest state. It just doesn't seem like it is very evenly spread out.
After Huntsville, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, I come across Grant, small town in Marshal County of only 1,039. It is, however, the home of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School. The school was established in 1924 and operates under a public-private partnership between the Marshall County School System and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The unique and historic campus covers 15 acres and contains 12 buildings, constructed between 1924 and 1957 in the Craftsman style of local stone or logs. Known for its quality education, more than 60% of its students come from families living below the poverty line.
From there, I continue southward to Talladega County, the land of Ricky Bobby, the Talladega International Speedway, and Talladega County Jail, LOL.
One thing I didnt realise was how much water there is in Alabama. The state actually has three broad areas of watersheds:
Tennessee River drainage: Located in the northern part of the state, this watershed contains the Tennessee River, Pickwick Lake, Wilson Lake, Wheeler Lake, and Lake Guntersville, some of which I rode through.
Mobile River Basin: Located in the central part of the state, this watershed contains the upper Tombigbee River, Black Warrior River, lower Tombigbee River, Cahaba River, Coosa River, Tallapoosa River, Lake Martin, Weiss Lake, and Smith Lake, again some of which I rode through.
Coastal Drainages: Located in the southern part of the state, this watershed contains smaller river basins that empty into the Gulf of Mexico. I expect that I'll be riding through that tomorrow.
Soeaking of water, for the last two hours, there have been intermittent rain drops in the air. In Talladega, however, the heavens open, and I'm forced to pull over to rainproof my ride. It continues all the way to my hotel in Montgomery, and as I sit here blogging, the rain is pouring down outside. It's a gentle reminder of how lucky I have been with the weather so far. This afternoon and tomorrow, that comes to an end. It looks like rain all day tomorrow. I have rain gear, but it likely means, like today, not so many pictures.
A final word on Montgomery. Population 198,000 and capital of Alabama, it was the original capital of the Confederate states before it moved to Richmond, Virginia, and is home to the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, the home church of Martin Luther King Jr. It is also a major center of events and protests in the Civil Rights Movement including the Montgomery bus boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches. A lot of history was made here.
