Day 6: Black Ice
Traveling down State Route 113, I tuned into The Country Crossroads, KCRX 99.5 FM. Snow flurries cascaded in waves, making an already difficult drive feel like a battle. The road was winding, serpentine—like a snake slithering toward prey. A nightmare of a rollercoaster, loops, inversions, and corkscrews all in one. Endless rows of pine trees flashed by in rhythmic patterns, swaying like an unwelcome lullaby. In conditions like this, one could easily nod off if they weren’t careful.     "Howdy, sweethearts! You're listening to The Country Crossroads. I'm your host, Savannah Ray, and this is Sweet Tea with your Sweetie." She smiled through the radio, as always. I took a swig of my Miller Lite, strapping in for another dose of Sweet Tea.     "Are there any lonely hearts out there?" she asked, her voice warm and familiar, like a cup of coffee on a cold morning.      I raised my can. "Right here!" I said aloud, even though I knew she couldn’t hear me. Then, I downed it in one go.     I was in my Ford F150, the dark coat of the truck reflecting the falling snow. No destination in mind—just enjoying the road. Another beer cracked open with that sweet hiss.     "Well, you don't gotta be lonely no more, hun. I’m right here, and I’ll jaw with you all night or play a few tunes to set the mood. I hope that’s alright. I’m sipping on my sweet tea..." sip     "And I’m sipping on my beer..." sip
"Ain’t that refreshing?" She chuckled softly, "Alright, sugar, I feel like starting with a classic tonight. Gonna drop my silver dollar in the jukebox and play ‘Midnight Rider’ by the Allman Brothers Band. Please stay with me, I’ll be right back, sweetie." The lines on the road blurred into a hypnotic rhythm, a never-ending parade of trees and snowflakes. I slapped my face a few times. "And I’ve gone by the point of caring... Some old bed I’ll soon be sharing!" I howled out, my tone somewhere between a roar and a whimper, trying to fight off the pull of the road. But my eyes were getting heavy. "And I’m back, sweethearts! Did you miss me? I’m sorry if I was gone too long—what a track, huh? You know, I’ve always wanted to ask those loaner types, why do you become night riders?" Savannah’s voice felt like a warm hug, cutting through the chilly silence of my truck. I lifted my beer for another drink. "I’m over getting my heart broken, over and over," I muttered, feeling the truth of it settle deep in my chest. "That’s no reason to stop trying, sugar. Get back on that horse and keep riding. There’s always someone for you—friends, family, maybe even a love waiting around the bend." I nearly spit out my beer and furrowed a brow. "That was a little more direct than our”—I made air quotes—"conversations."
"Calm down, sweetie, sip some more..." Her voice dripped with something I couldn’t quite place, but I swear I heard the air quotes, along with a bite of amusement. "Sweet tea." I nervously took another swig, feeling the chill of the beer slide down my throat. "There you go, see? Ain't that better? What are you doing, Midnight Rider? It’s not safe to be out right now." I didn’t respond. The silence stretched, broken only by the hiss of snow against the windshield. The road wound ahead, its curves a rhythmic, hypnotic pulse. "What's wrong, Midnight Rider? Cat got your tongue? What are you doing?" she asked again, her tone sharper now, cutting through the static. "I don’t know. Enjoying the open road... enjoying your show?" I muttered, my words a little more sluggish than I intended. "Sweetheart, I think you're running away from your problems. This is no solution. You'll make it through this, baby, trust me." "Maybe I should head back..." I thought aloud, but something in her voice made me hesitate. Then, just like that, a darkness fell. My eyes shot open—wide, panicked. My truck lurched as it swerved out of control, the tires screeching against the slick road. I fought for control, but the wheel slipped from my hands, and my Ford F150 shot off the cliff. The last thing I heard, just before everything went black:"I'm not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider. Not gonna let 'em catch the Midnight Rider.". Crash.

People can do this in creative protest. Is called that. You dress up like Dave and Doug and you have a bunch of you and you go to a bar and you bring these labels that have the right adhesive and they're Elsinore beer labels you printed up and you pull the sticky off and it's sticking on the Molson or the Heineken Etcetera bottles and you say the lines and you're drinking the beer and you say take ooff eey and only two people have the jackets onand a couple people come up and they have just shirts and only two people have the jackets on....and They order the beer and they have to put their jackets on and like a few more do it and they have to put their jackets on and then camera pans back and it says get a taste of the Great White North with Elsinore beer a fine brew
Zues Hera
We have a saying that we use up there in Canada if you don't know what you're talking about don't say it but he knows he's talking about and it's very weird 'cause it's like backwards we were freezing and the beer is supposed to help us warm up. But really it's an excuse to drink the beer that's what we were doing but even when you're completely sauced you're still freezing it was making it worse so we had to leave but really this commercial idea is awesome I love it. We really have to start doing this stuff and we'll probably try on our own and he wants people to fake it and possibly even sell different beer as Elsinore beer and it's probably gonna happen all I can say is a great night white N it's beautiful and cheers to Arnie for making it even better than it was for having us notice it and cherish it. And he was always great for a beer at a decent time so gonna bring a couple 12 packs up there with a few people and have some brew a nice Miller Lite underneath a lovely smelling pine trees and the beautiful white snow maybe he was up there somewhere watching over us and he was our grandfather and we don't like you Trump

A Reddit comment on the alleged need for premeditatedly humorous responses to electric vehicle skepticism from old farts but which, in this author's experience in the real world since 2015, is not actually a thing
Who are these malicious petrochemical fetishists lying in wait to accost unsuspecting Reddit-posting EV-appreciators? Are they really so numerous that we must arm ourselves with insouciant retorts? Across nine years that have included the ownership of four BEVs and a PHEV, I have had precisely two interactions prompted by the particulars of my vehicle’s drivetrain.
In June 2018 at a RaceTrac gas station in Cherokee County, Georgia (2020 US presidential election result: Trump 68.8%, Biden 29.5%), a generously bearded, white-haired man with what one might broadly characterize as a tradesperson-ly bearing asked me how much I had paid for the 2013 Ford C-Max Energi PHEV into which I was, at that very moment, literally and furiously pumping fuel for the price of $2.889 per gallon. “The reason I ask,“ he added, conspiratorially, “is that I’d love to stick it to those Arabs.” ($14,245 is how much I paid for the 2013 Ford C-Max Energi. It sucked.)
In November 2022, early one freezing morning in the parking lot of the Econo Lodge Pigeon Forge Riverside in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, I came upon a generously bearded, white-haired man with what one might broadly characterize as a tradesperson-ly bearing, dressed in a late-90s era Rusty Wallace Miller Lite No. 2 jacket, peering into the front passenger-side window of my 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance, attracted by the conspicuously unfamiliar sounds of its defrosting processes. He wanted to talk about the 0-60 times and quarter-mile trap speeds of the seemingly many Ford Mustangs in his life and if it was true that, as he had heard, my appliance-white compact crossover loaded with everything a family of four requires for a pre-Thanksgiving visit to Dollywood would, for real and in actual fact, embarrass them all on a drag strip. “Yes,” I insouciantly retorted. He said that was cool as hell, but that he had an unspecified amount of gasoline and (liquified?) Ford Mustangs in his veins, and as a result simply could never see himself buying an EV.
I recommended that he call his primary care physician and demand a referral to a hematologist, reassured him that Ford Mustangs would always be cool as hell, and resumed my previous task of freezing my balls off in the Econo Lodge parking lot.

Tucker has been in and out of Foster Care his entire life. Only knowing two good families who kept him for short periods of time.
He was always one to explore, adventure, and likes all sorts of outdoor and water activities.
Being raised down south he has that sort of southern hospitality people care about especially with those he cares about.
When he turned 18 he became emancipated and took to trying to find his mother along the eastern coast. All he ever had of her was an old photograph, and her name. Melanie.
He’s a tumble weed blowing in the wind, never in one place too long. Working whatever odd jobs he can to help pay for things along his way.
Tucker enjoys the simple things, being he didn’t come from nor has a lot.
He finds it easy to move because he never really had a home and never really had a family.
Charleston has been the place he’s been the longest since leaving Myrtle Beach,SC. He met some good people here who made his desire to flea not as prominent.
He doesn’t know where he sees himself, his main goal now is just to one day reunite with his birth mom and ask her why she didn’t want him. Possibly form a connection now.
He’s a real down to earth guy, and would do anything for those he loves. Makes you wanna live your life to the fullest and take chances.

Darcy Lewis decides somewhere between Dallas and Austin, as her beat up old Ford truck speeds down a two-lane back country road, that she’s made for road trips.

Darcy loves New York City.
17. Pictures of You (Steve Rogers x Darcy Lewis, MCU)
It starts with a kiss.  Sort of.
18. Sugar High (Steve Rogers x Darcy Lewis, MCU)
The timer above the stove beeps and Darcy puts on her red polka dot oven mitts to pull the carrot cake out of the oven before it burns.
19. Not Broken, Just Bent (Steve Rogers x Darcy Lewis, MCU)
She’s tucked back in a shadowy corner of the bar drowning her sorrows in Miller Lite when Bucky slides down into the booth.
20. Springsteen (Steve Rogers x Darcy Lewis, MCU AU)
Steve walks across the parking lot with Bucky and Clint, all three laughing hysterically at Clint’s dead-on impersonation of Coach Fury from football practice that afternoon.
Thought this would be fun, but it ramped up my anxiety to see how many unfinished fics I have. LOL! Oh well. Enjoy!
Not tagging anyone, but feel free to play!

The Exorcist
Tumblr media
William Friedkin’s horror masterpiece, released 45 years ago this holiday season, was largely set in the collegiate Washington D.C. neighborhood of Georgetown. The Georgetown of the early 1970s was a bit less posh than the neighborhood today, but even at the height of the eponymous school’s frattiest years, the area was chockablock with Federal-style and early American architecture. The university itself is heavily featured in both book and film (author William Blatty was an alumnus), as are establishing shots of the Key Bridge (formally, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, built in 1923) that spans the Potomac.
Tumblr media
The infamous “Exorcist Steps,” which run from Prospect down to M Street, were even honored as such by the city in a 2015 ceremony.
Tumblr media
As previously established, I was raised Catholic-lite: First Confessed but barely Confirmed, aka Catholic enough to be disturbed by the Exorcist but not Catholic enough to have picketed the movie. Although in 1973 I was but one year old, and that would have been a very tiny and cute picket sign in my chubby fists, maybe “Former Fetuses Against Friedkin” or something like that. Anyway! I first watched the Exorcist with my atheist-raised high school bestie, and at the time we both agreed that it was just unsettling enough to raise some doubts about God and the Devil. Also about the wisdom of fucking around with a Ouija board.
Tumblr media
No girl! Captain Howdy is not your friend, ma petite.
My second viewing of the film was as a full-grown adult, when the director’s cut was released in 1999. I now realized the true horror of this story was just under foot: the ugly carpeting in that awesome Federal-style townhouse!
Tumblr media
The MacNeil residence’s main floor has herringbone parquet in the kitchen, dining nook, and study, but the rest of the house is covered in that ugly-ass, low-pile fuzz bomb. I could barely register Regan’s infamous spider walk down the stairs, I was so distracted by that gross carpeting.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Why would you ruin such a historic property? How could you commit such high crimes against the herringbone? But then I did some research, and sigh, I was all wrong. You see, the Exorcist house, aka the MacNeil Residence, wasn’t built until 1950.
Thus, that carpeting makes total sense, as does Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn)’s bedroom style.
Tumblr media
The furniture is Federal-style but the wallpaper and (blech) carpet are definitely 20th century.
Regan doesn’t seem to be into carpeting much, either, given her tinkle on the Persian rug. I just love the reaction expression on Father Dyer’s face after Regan pisses the floor. By the way, that character was played by a real live priest, Father William J. O’Malley:
Tumblr media
Speaking of priests, Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) pretty much wiped out any remaining Catholicism lingering in me. I never met a priest half as handsome, and thus that confirmed that there must be no God.
Tumblr media
Mon dieu, he is a tasty sacrament. O la la...
There was so much myth and legend surrounding The Exorcist, it’s sometimes hard to remember there was some bona fide weird shit happening as well. An actual serial killer makes an appearance in the film (okay, alleged serial killler, but convicted murderer). Friedkin shot the hospital imaging scene at New York University Medical Center, and used an actual neurosurgeon and his team as extras. Paul Bateson was an X-ray technician on staff at the hospital and made it into the scene, with a line to boot.
Tumblr media
Bateson was arrested in 1979 for the murder of film critic Addison Verrill (an act committed during a date gone terribly wrong). While incarcerated at Riker’s, Bateson boasted to other inmates that he had murdered at least six other gay men. The details he provided were eerily similar to the “Bag Murders” that had terrified the NYC gay community in 1977 and 1978, when the bodies of missing queer men turned up in the Hudson River. The victims were all dismembered and disposed of in plastic bags, just as Bateson described. The police were never able to assemble enough evidence to charge Bateson, so he instead only served his sentence for the death of Verrill. William Friedkin had already been approached earlier to shoot a film based on the 1970 novel Cruising, but he passed on the offer until the Bateson arrest. Friedkin was so disturbed and intrigued by this story and his own connection to the murderer, he ended up making the film.
There are a lot of other fables about the Exorcist curse, which are mostly explained away easily. I personally was a bit haunted when doing my research, thinking about Georgetown Preparatory School and this past year’s shitshow Supreme Court nomination hearing. Even though Georgetown Prep separated from the University and moved to Bethesda, MD in 1919, the name is still triggering. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford still cannot live in her own house, due to death threats, and the accused sits clear and free on the highest court of the United States. Believe women. Why the fuck would we go through this torture a second time, if we weren’t telling the truth?
Here’s to hoping for a better 2019. I made it through a year of blogging about my special obsession, hurray! I’m going to keep this going as long as there are interesting architectural examples in 1970s horror movies. January is going to get weird, so stay tuned. I love you all, you sexy demons. Tabernak!

Say switch to beer out and we caught it but he drinks Miller lite because it tastes good and Budweiser won't change the taste and IPA is very bitter but it's good for you in some ways and doesn't give you fungus so putting out a nice IPA now from each company
But when we roll into town you guys are nervous and we distribute and we have tons of beer most of us huge courses huge Miller is huge the old Milwaukee is becoming huge again and perhaps Blue Ribbon is gigantic and it was gigantic and we're making most of it the Brewer admits he can't keep up at all and he was and he had stopped the other day because his factories were on hold because of all the idiots they had stopped it we moved them out in a few minutes and we started rolling and we had about 550 million cases in 20 minutes they were amazed I kept blowing it out now there's a giant giant demand for our beer globally everybody wants it because he was drinking it so he says trying to insult me so I guess we'll just let it ride and that's what he said
Well then it rip here this is disgusting he keeps pointing it out they just don't want to comply with anything but take it over tons of businesses were moving tons of factories but producing tons of stuff and we're retrieving a bunch of stuff we made so many light cycles it's not even funny brand new ones huge numbers by the way people got their converted ones and didn't like them that much because sometimes it over 200 they wobble a little because they're their old bikes and sometimes they're vibrate because the motor is not ours huge numbers of sales and they sold they'd sell their conversion people love it 200 miles an hour is faster than any of the sport bikes so the cruise around saying you want to race to practically every sport bike they see and the sport bikes are now buying the conversion kits huge huge numbers to them

And I see what she goes through but he's in boss for a while this is my little niche and I've got conversions going on almost everything even cars we have this light car and it looks like a car it's got car tires and it is a chassis of virtually every compact car and even subcompact cars and most of them work the chassis depending there's a list of them online but really GM has like five Ford has like four Dodge has like three and Chrysler which is the same company has like four and all of them can convert easily into a light cycle car the reason you want to do this is for the performance of the drive system that I have modified from the light cycle and converted it into a car format it's different it runs different and it's connected differently it's like the first front wheel drive people look at it and can't figure it out and it is based on his drive it is intense this kid did a great great deal of work on inventing things he deserves a lot better treatment and these people won't do it they just sit here saying he has to get kidnapped so I'm going to come in here and beat the s*** out of these people and he says we must when they're breaking the law every law and getting rid of these people isn't going to change anything they're all competing they haven't in their area but really these people need to be they need to have a swift beat down we got that too and there's a whole bunch of reasons to give them a beat down but the car works great and he asked me to do it and we're looking at putting it on a whole bunch of cars and we did testing and it's rigorous we did millions and millions of miles and it doesn't fail and we tested and sent you so we're going ahead and we're going to do that and he says we should make an Indy car with it and we should make a stock car and we should make the the what do they call those circuit cars and small race cars out of it and take over the racing circuits and dump all of the other race car circuits that don't want to do it if they don't want to buy into it and you just buy everything around them and shut them down and we're going to do that this is an interesting concept of taking over and it's cheaper to make it's about $200 per car cheaper on a regular car and we're going to start putting the model out it's more fuel efficient by about 25% and it's 25% faster per horsepower that granted the electric engine motor with the generator is much better but these can be hooked up to that and in concert it creates a car that is about 10 times as fast per amount of energy output it's incredible he's quite the engineer we're using these vehicles everywhere we need to mass produce them we're starting now and hook up by crook he's going to get some money from this these people have to give him something for it or let something go through or we're going to be extremely mad
Zig Zag
Roman already but we get the point this is going to put it put it way over the top
Thor Freya
Thank you very much honey for a good performance and if you need any money let me know cuz I need some for the mission and it's not being taken seriously and I need to know why I hear it's not possible to do right now and say well we just sit down and seriously have a talk if it's not possible to do right now what are the real reasons
I now understand what you're saying he's sitting here everyone's pissed off why fight it it's because if you send them over there at the foreigners and minorities and more lock will actually start fighting and supposed to sit here so hopefully the announcement today makes a difference
Hera
Zues
I hope it does too it should is the market change in people's attitude and it's going to change all of the world and these f****** are going to go down everyone's looking at them like they need to die we understand it now they say he's under massive duress
Thor Freya
It is real I needed help down here for ages and finally I said this I should talk about it and I got what he's saying it's going to go down there it's already a mess we needed to go down there the scenario it's not down at and that's the problem and so I eat it out and it's working

The Most Popular Beer at Every NFL Stadium, According to the Untappd App
Tumblr media
Last week marked the start of the 2021 NFL season, and with fans returning to watch the games in person, that also means tailgating and stadium brews are back on the table. Yet some beers tend to be more popular than others on game days.
In a recent article, USA Today Sports’ The List Wire shared the most popular beers at every NFL stadium. To compile the ranking, The List Wire partnered with the drinking app Untappd, and based the results on the “most checked-in” beer at each location since the 2019 season.
Though the methodology isn’t completely comprehensive, the results paint an interesting picture of varying style preferences, and showcase a range of brands from regional to national.
At MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and Jets, Bud Light was the beer of choice. The nation’s best-selling beer also came out on top at the Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium.
Fans watching the Eagles play at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Stadium opted for Sly Fox Brewing’s Vulpulin, a locally brewed IPA. New England Patriots fans also favored something closer to home: Massachusetts’s own Julius IPA from Tree House Brewing Company. (Sorry, Sam Adams.)
Read on for the most popular beer at each NFL stadium.

2019 in Film, Part 1
We’re closing out the decade with one of the best years for film I can remember. There was so much great stuff in 2019 that it got me back to writing reviews after I had given them up as a hopeless endeavor in an age of polarized opinions. We had A-list actors turning in top-notch work about deteriorating relationships and alternate histories of Hollywood. We had forgotten or controversial actors---Antonio Banderas, Sienna Miller, Adam Sandler, Paul Walter Hauser, among others---proving they deserved to be A-list. We had great new films from the likes of The Safdie Brothers, Robert Eggers, Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach, Pedro Almodovar and more. It wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Clint Eastwood did his best to undermine his own filmmaking with sexist and anti-press leanings. Disney continued to gobble up everything it could, threatening the future of legitimate filmmaking and the theatre business. And some excellent creators turned in movies that, well, didn’t meet the hype. But what year is perfect? Below, a compendium of every 2019 film I saw, and my absolutely correct opinion on each one. This covers films through the letter G, and I’ll be posting H-N and O-Z shortly. I’ll also be updating these lists as I add new reviews and see more movies, since I live in the arse end of nowhere and there’s still a lot I haven’t seen. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
21 Bridges: 3 Stars
-A throwback to the relatively stripped down cops-and-criminals thrillers of the 90’s, this tightly made and well acted tale of corruption will appeal to anyone who remembers the likes of The Fugitive.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/urvdfx2
Ad Astra: 3 Stars
-A toothless finale and a weak role for Tommy Lee Jones can’t derail the quality of Brad Pitt’s performance, one where most of the character is developed inside his head.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/whkonyy
The Aeronauts: 2 Stars
-This attempt to emulate the adventure epics of the Golden Age of Hollywood features spectacular sights and two great actors doing their best, but falters when developing an interesting story or drawing us into their struggle for survival. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/tce4ps6
The Aftermath: 1 Star
-Lifeless, listless and generally not knowing what it wants to be, the movie switches back and forth from serious post-war thriller to cheesy erotic novel, and fails at both.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/vjfefuq
Tumblr media
Ash is Purest White: 4 Stars
-A patient poem of life, which leads you to believe it will be one thing---a crime drama about small time street hoods in a dying industrial town---and instead becomes a quiet ode to personal perseverance. One of the year’s best films.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: 3 Stars
-Tom Hanks is ephemeral as the children’s icon with the recently resurgent reputation, and Matthew Rhys and Chris Cooper are effective as the estranged, battling father and son who Rogers helps to heal. The definitive statement on Rogers is last year’s documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? This movie is mostly a fantasy drama revolving around Rogers’ ethos, with minimal insight into the man.
Alita: Battle Angel: 2 1/2 Stars
-Featuring stunning technology, good performances (especially from Mahershala Ali and Rose Salazar) and an incredibly weak script co-written by James Cameron, this is the kind of movie that would absolutely kill if you got a better screenplay to go with it. Hopefully they get a second try.

Tumblr media
American Woman: 3 1/2 Stars
Sienna Miller has flown under most stardom’s radar, and here in this small film no one saw gets one of the year’s best performances. She’s an irresponsible mother who has to learn to grow up after her daughter’s disappearance, but that is mere plot. The key is the sympathy the film has for the problems of people we wouldn’t ordinarily cheer on.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/uz7x67z
Avengers: Endgame: 3 Stars
-Fan service through and through, Endgame delivers every thrill you could possibly want with few real surprises, but also leaves you wondering where the MCU could possibly go from here.
Birds of Passage: 4 Stars
-A fictionalized look at the rise of the drug trade in Colombia, this Godfather-like film traces the fall of indigenous cultures to the lure of international criminal activity with a steady hand and a de-emphasis on overt violence.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/ww8m98v
Blinded by the Light: 3 Stars
-You really do gotta be a Springsteen fan, but if you are, this one is ready to make you smile and cheer. You may forget it after you leave the theatre, but then, it has already done its job.
Tumblr media
Booksmart: 3 1/2 Stars
-Olivia Wilde continues the rehabilitation of the once trashy teen comedy, making a movie about alienation and identity that can stand alongside films like The Duff, Eighth Grade and Edge of Seventeen. It may not break any new ground, but it is so relatable and so funny it doesn’t really have to.
Brightburn: 1 1/2 Stars
-A for effort, F for execution. There’s blood to be wrung from the “What if Superman were evil?” stone, but instead of taking the concept and giving us a unique take-off of the world’s most well known superhero, the movie is content to repeat the famous origin story, weakly flipped to the horror genre.
Brittany Runs a Marathon: 3 Stars
-It isn’t without its cliches, but it’s nice to see a good film like this which doesn’t lionize impossibly perfect looking people as the only ones who can realize a dream. Jillian Bell is both off-putting and likable, a rare trick. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
By the Grace of God: 4 Stars
-Frances Ozon’s dispassionate, drama-lite look at three men taking on a skin-crawlingly vile abusive priest is impossible to look away from, even when characters are simply discussing their lives. Ozon makes ordinary life lived with trauma almost as tense for the audience as for those living it.
Tumblr media
Captain Marvel: 3 Stars
-When people say the MCU movies are factory-produced, this one could be Exhibit A. It does almost nothing wrong and takes almost no risks, leaving a movie that’s fun while you’re watching it and forgotten as soon as you’re not. Bonus points for Annette Bening playing a murderous A.I.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/sw8247t
Captive State: 1 Star
-An intriguing sci-fi premise with a lifeless script, the potential for interesting twists and turns is neutered by a lack of narrative flare.
Cats: 1 Star
-The kind of movie that makes you want to shower afterwards.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/tzjx5v8
The Current War: 2 1/2 Stars
-More flash than substance, which in an odd way makes it a suitable treatment of the very publicity-minded battle between Edison and Westinghouse. Overall, it feels more like an educational video or a History Channel special, but there are things worth the trip, like the performance of Benedict Cumberbatch.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/urewluk
The Dead Don’t Die: 0 Stars
-Jim Jarmusch has made some of the finest films I’ve ever seen and some of the worst. This unfunny, painfully obvious satire is firmly in the latter camp.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/w8bafdl
Doctor Sleep: 3 1/2 Stars
-An absolutely delicious villain coupled with overall strong performances and engaging, old-school filmmaking result in one of the better of the many Stephen King adaptations.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/sns6nhh
Tumblr media
Dora and the Lost City of Gold: 3 1/2 Stars
-It takes a show meant to educate young kids about languages and turns it into a genuinely funny, exciting and engaging adventure movie that pulls of an “All-ages Indiana Jones” vibe shockingly well. One of the few movies that actually needs a sequel.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/t7tzyxq
Dumbo: 3 Stars
-The original is outdated enough that for once a Disney remake doesn’t feel like a cash grab, and Tim Burton turns in a beautiful movie with a great villain (who, strangely enough, is an obvious stand-in for Walt himself).
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/wnkkvuz
Tumblr media
Fast Color: 3 Stars
-A decidedly different superhero movie that scuttles itself a bit with its own franchise ambitions, but the first two acts deliver a serious story focusing on things superhero movies rarely touch on: addiction, abandonment, forgiveness and parenthood.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/sgytshn
Ford v Ferrari: 3 Stars
-Two hours of the movie is bog-standard biopic stuff elevated by Damon and Bale’s performances. The last third is an incredibly thrilling, no-special-effects race scene that will get the blood pumping even if you don’t give one whit about race cars.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters: 2 Stars
-An improved emphasis on visuals helps this one be better than its predecessor, but that ain’t saying a whole helluva lot.
Full Review: https://tinyurl.com/vcuhc44
Tumblr media
The Good Liar: 2 Stars
-A strange mix of obvious twists and spoilers you couldn’t possibly see coming, the movie feels like it both plays fair and cheats with the audience. It’s a lurid potboiler elevated considerably by the immense talents of Mirren and McKellan, who are playing well below their weight class here.
Gloria Bell: 3 Stars
-Julianne Moore turns in a lovable, relatable performance in a movie that doesn’t otherwise differentiate itself much from the divorced-people-finding-their-life-again sub-genre of feel good movie.
Greta: 2 1/2 Stars
-The sleazy thrills of seeing Isabelle Huppert, one of the best of actresses, playing an unhinged psycho stalker is worth the price of admission, but the film itself doesn’t do enough to stand out from the thriller pack.
