Alexandra Palace ice rink in a nutshell: the biggest indoor London ice skating venue, rich in grandeur, shabby chic charm and heritage. The capacity is 1,250 people, open all year around and weather proof; so no wonder Ally Pally ice skating is an all times London favourites.

A London landmark destroyed by fire 16 days after first opened in 1873 – Alexandra Palace re-opened again two years later becoming the place from where the BBC had its first broadcast in 1935.
Alexandra Palace heritage
Alexandra Palace heritage
Named after the Princess of Wales, Alexandra of Denmark, who married Prince Edward in 1863, formerly has been known as The Palace of the People and more casually Ally Pally. Historically Alexandra Palace contained an amazing concert hall, art galleries, a museum, lecture hall, library, banqueting room, large theatre, horse races course, one of the the finest concert-organ in Europe and even a swimming pool! The first and second world wars Ally Pally witnessed refugee and internment camps as well as further deterioration. The recent history is mixed as well, with the charitable trust set up in 1900 going through the challenges of much needed renovation – complex and costly for a listed building; fundraising; proposed and blocked commercial developments; public consultation and advice from English Heritage.
Alexandra Palace historical BBC broadcast
A day out at Alexandra Palace has it all: heritage, raw charm of a historical building still in renovation in certain parts, a beautiful park next door declared local nature reserve and of course ice skating!

We’ve been exploring ice skating London options with kids for the last couple of years and by far Alexandra Palace ice rink was one of the most relaxing experience : the space is large and copes well with the crowds; the sessions are generous at 2 hours; the ice skating for beginners is well facilitated with 3 options depending on size, energy and skating abilities: penguin, seal or snowman; lots of place for the spectators with the 740-seat stadium; there’s a casual cafe perfect for a quick drink and kids lunch next door to the ice rink plus Phoenix pub next door.

Our 5 years old picked the usual penguin that he tries to abandon occasionally to venture by himself.
Ally Pally ice skating
Our almost 3 years old tested the penguin but first time with proper ice blades didn’t have much success (in the past he used add ons). So the seal for the toddler was a winner for all of us, leaving us to actually enjoy iceskating.

Not tested with the kids but we understand Saturday night sees Alexandra Palace ice rink turn into a dance floor, with funky lighting and chart hits mixed by Ally Pally’s resident DJ. 8:30 to 11pm plus there’s also a monthly appearance from legendary London DJs Club de Fromage – we should be checking and reporting back soon!

Back to Ally Pally ice skating with kids, the options are numerous: ice hockey and figure skating classes, birthday parties, school bookings and private hire, chilled or advanced ice skating classes.

It’s a perfect day out all seasons – the other Sunday the kiddies played with melting snow; in summer the Park and playground are to be explored in full glory. A gem with stunning architecture, beautiful parkland and great views, Alexandra Palace ice rink and facilities make a perfect glorious day out !

And for the seasonal pop ups, do not miss Hampton Court and Tower of London ice rinks, some royal winter fun to be had again in December 2019! Cirque du Soleil is back at Royal Albert Hall with a roar! Totem is 2019 London’s evolution themed extravaganza, from amphibians to beach posers, Amerindians and modern Europeans cliches, turbulent oceans fusing with volcanoes and becoming green lands, tribal flying becoming a space odyssey. Our Totem Cirque du Soleil review can not be anything but glorious, for 2 hours I oscillated between goosebumps, laughing and transported on far away lands and ancient times; whilst my 5 years old watched in awe at his favourite themes such as lava, fish, space and flying. Totem Cirque du Soleil London brings 2 hours of pure magic where human boundaries are constantly challenged and pushed.

There’s a giant, skeleton-like acrobatics structure and a magic bridge that unfurls into different shapes, with stunningly real projections of lapping water and darting surround sound merging into a full sensory rush.
We found the transitions between set pieces seamlessly done and the acts beautifully varied: between gravity defying amphibians or Bollywood inspired heroes; fun acts with cultural stereotypes including apes, early humans and a puffed-up businessmen hilarious but super skilled; tensioned acts where we just watched in awe and terror roller skaters spinning and whirling at heart stopping speeds; Italian and Spanish boys; primal passions and primary skills.

Totem Cirque du Soleil London brings the spectacle to an exquisite level and as always The Royal Albert Hall is the most magnificent and gracious setting for this visual and audio feast.
It’s been the second Cirque du Soleil for me in 2 weeks as no Vegas trip is complete without seeing one! So feeling utterly spoilt and very grateful! Last year the 5 years old (well technically 4 back then) watched Ovo in awe for his first time, but Totem Cirque du Soleil Royal Albert Hall he reckoned it’s even more amazing! Loved it, loved it, loved it!
Totem Cirque du Soleil London has magic and primary passions, spirituality, love, trust and mischief – a glorious rollercoaster starting from water and ending in water- metaphors after metaphors, humankind constantly challenging and transcending their context and limits in a show of pure magic and sheer art.
PS: Thanks so much for the invite! Pleasure as always to feature the iconic Royal Abert Hall and Totem Cirque du Soleil review has been a delight!

Christmas in London with kids is such a joyous affair and we are all so spoilt again with choices – so much wintery fun to be had! Here are our favourites for 2018 and our London best winter selection over the years.
Iceskating at Royal Palaces. Our favourites tested for 2018/ 2019 winter season are Hampton Court and Tower of London icerinks. A Royal palace in the background illuminated magically with festive lights, Hampton Court is superbly atmospherical and quintessence of London heritage and festive fun.
Iceskating at Royal Palaces: HCP
We were very lucky to be invited on a Sunday afternoon – not too crowded but just about the right ratio of iceskaters and kids. The mulled wine and hot chocolate after are the regular treat and we loved sipping them over the magic lights and ice glimmering on Hampton Court Palace, Henry VII’s historic home.

Tower of London icerink similarly breathes history and more festive fun – it’s impossible to choose between the two, so we vote both!
Iceskating at Royal Palaces: HCP
Our honorary contributor Laura made it to the Press Evening at Tower of London with her husband and daughter Freya and raved about extensively on social media (article also coming shortly). One feels blessed to take in the dramatic setting of the fortress beside the Thames whilst whizzing around on ice in one of London’s most famous landmarks.
Snowman at the Peacock theatre
Christmas shows. We started the winter festivities season this year with the Snowman at the Peacock theatre – what a treat! My 5 years old adored it, no doubt his favourite part was the flying above mountains to the North Pole! For me the music was superb and la mise en scene simply fantastic -tears on my eyes at the end, very emotional and Christmassy. Dedicated article will be coming shortly!

And just like that, the countdown to Xmas started with the fabulous #Snowman and newly opened #SushiSamba in vibrant #CoventGarden. Pair it with Covent Garden for more festive fun, an iconic Christmas market and street entertainers.
Sushi SAmba Covent Garden
Christmas market and street entertainers
We also indulged into a scrumptious lunch at the newly opened Sushi Samba overlooking Covent Garden – spoilt rotten!
Sushi SAmba Covent Garden
Huddle at Unicorn Theatre is another Christmas treat and we are attempting a first time 4 of us at the theatre with our energetic and 2 years old troublemaker. Will report back soon, book your tickets as weekends performances are now mostly sold out.
RAH
Christmas in London with kids will not be Christmas without Royal Albert Hall and what an array of magic shows and performances have been lined up at this iconic London institution! Father Christmas at the Hall has been a favourite for years and 2018 will bring to the Hall the revamped version including a Sleigh!
We are very lucky to have in our diary My Christmas Orchestral Adventure and The Snowman and Paddington Bear and looking forward to seeing and writing about! My Christmas Orchestral Adventure introduces kids to classical music via a full symphony orchestra and encouraging them to sing, dance and join in as they help getting Santa’s map ahead of the Big Delivery on Christmas Eve! The Snowman and Paddington Bear live in concert as one could guess, celebrates two national institutions.
And for a wonderful arty wrap up of 2018 look no further than Nutcracker wonderfully performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet – a three generations treat that we raved about extensively in here. All these shows make also sparkling Christmas gift ideas – so much better than toys going in a cupboard ! No tidy up needed either – true festive magic points!
NHM Ice Rink
For festive arts and crafts head to the V&A to Gingerbread City Exhibition – architects, builders, engineers – big and young kids alike in the busy stunning South Kensington. This year we are imagining the future city ! Pair it with National History Museum icerink, a winter London classic, with the gorgeous backdrop of Alfred Waterhouse’s building, fairy lights, Austrian chalet set up and vibes just above the icerink and the Christmas tree in the middle of the ice.
NHM Ice Rink
What other things do YOU have planned or you’d like to hear about?
Christmas in London with kids – royally spoilt, again! Christmas in London with kids is such a joyous affair and we are all so spoilt again with choices - so much wintery fun to be had!

Desert safari with kids? Glamping with temperatures soaring over to 36 degrees Celsius on the day ? In the middle of the shifting sands and dunes where there’s little escape or distractions? Questions I’ve been asked on a number of occasions lately. And it’s a yes to all, and moreover – what a magic stay we had with Arabian Oryx Camp, a gorgeous Desert Camp Oman Wahiba Sands!

We arrived at sunset after a 30minutes off-road drive from Al Wasil and another 2.5 hours from Shangri-La Al Bar.

The 5 years old and I jumped with excitement at our fist attempt to climb the tall dunes by the Camp – warm, velvety and inviting – we felt in love instantly.
Desert camp Oman Wahiba Sands: Arabian Oryx playground at sunset
My other half and the 2 years old explored the cute playground standing surreally by the beautiful sunset red light bathed sands.
dav
Once sunset concluded, night started to fall in and we managed to resume the initial excitement, we headed to the Reception area of this beautiful Desert Camp Oman Wahiba Sands and we’ve been all greeted warmly with dates and water, thereafter to be promptly installed into a spacious Arabian villa.
2 beds and a living, filled with Bedu and Arabian charm and features, whilst practical and contemporary.
The boys checked the treasure boxes and jumped for joy in the generous beds, played hide and seek in the generous space and settled for the travertine porch and outside sitting area to stargaze.

The dinners at Arabian Oryx Camp take place between 7-9pm and were quite a feast with lots of Omani dishes, plenty of salads, vegetables and grilled meats, freshly baked pitta and few sweet options.
rpt
ptr
It’s casual, social and filled with joy. Once dinned and refreshed, one has the option to sit by the campfire and roast marshmallows (our 5 years old was very keen so we sourced them on the road); sit by the beautiful open area under the wide skies (Manama) and chat to fellow travellers or even check messages (wifi is working in the public areas).
rbsh
bsh
Later in the evening there’s also the live music over more tea, coffee and dates at the Majlis. Both Manama and Majlis (place of sitting in Arabic) are adorned with Persian carpets and pillows and transport you into Arabian fairy-tale magic.
And tales aside, our kids loved socialising with other children (and there were plenty on both evenings), danced on the bedu rhythms, ran around some more and cuddled extensively the baby-cat adopted by the Camp.

And once social gatherings are over for the desert safari with kids or without, one gets to return to the magic silence and the vastness of the desert.

Red sands at sunset and golden pale at sunrise, the dunes keep on changing their Dali-esque shades and shapes. We found them completely unapproachable between 10am -3:45pm when temperatures soar above 36degrees and one easily could feel about to be melting.
These were the perfect daytimes times to head to the Wadis and Bani Khalid is just over an hour drive from Arabian Oryx Camp, with its unexpected lush greens, palm trees and blue crystal pools desert dream like.

It has been our favourite Wadi on this trip with the kids – easily accessible from the parking, manicured and clean, relatively easy to swim in the natural blue pools kids included.
The swim is simply exhilarating, between the canyons and caves into the crystal blue waters.

There’s lunch on the site including delicious barbecued meats and vegetables where we even bumped into London friends who took the desert trip and wadi as a day trip from Muscat!

3pm is a great time to head back for dates at Arabian Oryx Desert Camp Oman Wahiba Sands before climbing the dunes waiting for sunset, dune bashing or the old fashioned camel ride.

Sunset in October in the Desert Camp Oman Wahiba Sands takes place shortly after 5:30, with moon and stars beginning to rise 6pm onwards. One gets to play the Little Prince over warm dunes, talk about efemerity and flowers, being special for someone and build meanings over time, stars and moon or simply embrace the therapeutical nothingness.

There’s climbing, sliding, boarding, running, sinking in the velvety red sands, warm at sunset and fresh at sunrise. The camel riding for us at sunset was such a treat, it gives a wonderful perspective from a higher observation point especially for a 5 years old.

cof
Our toddler has been deemed too unpredictable and loud to go for the ride though, so ended up with a well determined father up on the top of the dunes.
Desert safari with kids
We could have easily spent another day at the Arabian Oryx Camp and embrace these lands, but then Alila and Omani mountains were calling.
Thank you so much Arabian Oryx for the warm hospitality and golden memories. A piece of your surreally beautiful and harsh lands remain in our hearts and haunt our dreams. We will be back!

Disclosure: Arabian Oryx Camp hosted us for 1 night and we extended the 2nd on a media rate. All enthusiastic opinions about and kids in this post entirely ours – as usual! Thank you also Starlite for making stargazing so much easier and fun, can not recommend enough downloading the app!
