It's Pinot Noir Day and I decided to get all Santa Cruz Mountains up in this joint : This is Hobo Wine Co.'s Ghostwriter "Amaya Ridge Vineyard" sourced from a 30+ year old plot planted in Sandy, coarse gravel soils at an elevation of 1100 feet. It's dry-farmed, organic and produces some beautiful high-acid fruit! Kenny de-stems most of the fruit, ferments in steel, ages in neutral oak for roughly 18 months. Hobo Wine Company is making some damn fine juice these days! This new release is a 100% Pommard clone Pinot Noir from the organic Antle Vineyard located in the Chalone AVA, California. The vineyard is planted in crunchy granite and limestone soils at an elevation of about 1800 feet resulting in intense aromatics, evenly ripe fruit and killer acidity. Kenny hand harvested his section of Pinot Noir in early August, destemmed about 70%, leaving 40% whole cluster. The grapes fermented spontaneously, then aged in neutral oak for roughly 9 months. The wine is unfined/unfiltered. Aromas: black cherry, rose petals and baking spice. Last nights wine from Hobo Wine Company is now rooftop tested and rooftop approved! The Folk Machine Pinot Noir is 40% Mission Ranch (Arroyo seco), 56% Cedar Lane (arroyo seco), and 4% Antle Vineyard (Chalone). As always, the wine is largely Pommard Clone (Kenny loves some Pinot funk), but also 2A, and some Dijon 115 and 777 for fruit and jamminess. The wine was aged in 2-6 year old French oak barrels for 9 months. The various lots were harvested in the 22 Brix range, and fermented with 0-100% stems depending on lot. The primary fermentation was uninoculated and the Malolactic Fermentation was spontaneous. Kenny did not rack keeping the wine on the lees with occasional batonage until bottling to round out the mouthfeel. I always describe this as the anti-Cali style of Pinot Noir, which means it's lighter in color and alcohol but by no means simple! The aromas of cherry, baking spice and bramble jump out of the glass. The Flavors aren't overpowering and continue to unfold for minutes.
