Hanno affibbiato loro l'etichetta di gruppo pioniere di svariati generi: pionieri del punk (si sono formati nel 1976), pionieri del post-punk, pionieri del gothic rock, pionieri del dark, pionieri della musica psichedelica degli anni '80. I Banshees sono il manifesto e i fondatori di qualsiasi tipo di musica oscura e, grazie alla fredda e vitrea Siouxsie Sioux, capo/paladina di una nuova tribù generazionale che rispondeva agli slogan "rock is dead", sono diventati il punto di partenza di almeno il 90% dei progetti capitanati da una cantante donna. Siouxsie Sioux e Steven Severin si conoscono nel 1975 ad un concerto dei Roxy Music, la passione per un certo tipo di glam rock e per le sonorità più acide e graffianti di fine anni '70 (Velvet Underground, il primo vero gruppo "dark" della storia della musica, The Doors, Wire, Roxy Music, Can, Captain Beefheart etc), unite alla furia primigenia del punk dei Sex Pistols trovava un ennesimo punto di incontro con le sperimentazioni tribali delle formazioni contemporanee, come i Public Image Limited, Gang of Four e Joy Division. In questo micromondo di scambio d'influenze e di differenziazioni i Banshees collaborano per la creazione di quello status mentale che consisteva nella rimozione e nello scarto sonoro del post-punk.

La band sapeva quello che NON voleva nel proprio sound: niente assoli, nessun finale di canzone che finiva con un colpo secco di batteria; voleva concentrarsi sui tribalismi e fare largo uso dei tamburi e dei tom della batteria (una volta Siouxsie tolse perfino il charleston a Kenny Morris). Gli esotismi del post-punk non si rivolgevano solo alla musica africana e alle sperimentazioni baleariche (i PiL ne erano maestri) ma anche agli orientalismi (ed è simpatico vedere poi come gli esotismi delle band orientali provenivano dalle nostre terre occidentali); "Hong Kong Garden", primo singolo dei Banshees, è introdotto da uno xilofono che colpisce una scala orientale mentre le chitarre di McKay, graffianti e con un leggero delay, raddoppiano le medesime melodie. Il brano schizzò al settimo posto della classifica nazionale, tutto l'underground era curioso di vedere immortalata, sul proprio singolo preferito, l'icona enigmatica e ammaliante di Siouxsie Sioux; ma invece la band, giocando e ridefinendo il proprio ruolo di superiorità artistica e quasi religiosa, pubblicò la foto di una donna dal volto coperto. Non solo: il singolo non venne incluso neanche in The Scream, debutto del gruppo nel novembre del 1978.

La potenza elettrica e travolgente si ha subito con "Jigsaw Feeling", nella descrizione del non-evento della morte, nel provare alcun sentimento mentre la propria testa viene tagliata da una motosega; semplicemente perché i sentimenti e il carattere di una persona sono tutt'uno un giorno e scissi in due il giorno dopo. Le chitarre di "Overground "sono ipnotiche e orecchiabili mentre la voce di Siouxsie ha un qualcosa di mantrico e stregonesco che creava un parallelo con i delay delle chitarre: i gorgheggi della nostra regina dei ghiacci si sovrappongono l'uno sull'altro rimbalzando da una cassa all'altra mentre il lavoro di Morris dietro le pelli è sempre incentrato sui tamburi.

Ma il nuovo concetto musicale della musica gothic (o meglio, quello che diventerà poi la musica gothic) sta nel porre parallelismi ma contemporaneamente schernire e prendere le distanze dal passato. La cover di "Helter Skelter" dei Beatles è quanto di più cacofonico ci possa essere; le fresche melodie del quartetto di Liverpool sono solo un ricordo sepolto dalle graffianti corde e dagli ossessivi tom; quel "da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da" non fa altro che sputare sopra il brano originale. Eppure in questo calderone di meschinità si prolungano le similitudini artistiche di questi due generi di musica come ad esempio la ricerca di sonorità sulle chitarre e sul loro modo differente di essere psichedeliche. L'amore dei Banshees era per il flanger e per il suo effetto "raddoppio" di segnale della chitarra, il suo sfasare leggermente il segnale originario creando una sorta di secondo strumento "ombra". Questo si differenziava dal sereno phasing psichedelico dei dischi anni sessanta. I Banshees ragionavano su questi effetti per tirare una netta linea di demarcazione fra ciò che stavano facendo e il rock anni sessanta.* Altro stupendo manifesto di progressione anti-psichedelica si trova nella conclusiva "Switch", nei suoi arpeggi e nei suoi suadenti quanto oscuri sassofoni. La denuncia sociale dei Banshees passava prima attraverso l'individuo. In "Carcass" si parla di un garzone di un macellaio che, innamoratosi della carcassa di un maiale, si recide gli arti per assomigliare al suo morboso oggetto del desiderio. Questa rembrandtiana memoria era un espressione della concezione che Steven Severin aveva verso il punk: ”disgregare se stessi, mettersi in discussione” e significava generalmente una morbosa analisi del lato più oscuro della natura umana: ossessione, irrazionalità, stati mentali estremi.** Ancora l'immaginario collettivo, le piccole casalinghe ”eterne disilluse di periferia” descritte in "Nicotine Stain" e in "Suburban Relapse" dove si parla delle ansie fisiche e psicotiche di fumatrici incallite perché adagiate e annoiate dall'inattività, oppure dei nervi che saltano all'improvviso mentre si lavano i piatti. Schiette e forti le parole di Siouxsie dette mentre il brano velocizza fra scordati violini e freddi graffi in stile "Psycho": ”Se guardi quelle case (quelle della periferia nativa di Bromley e Chislehurst, a sud di Londra) ti rendi conto di quante siano le donne fuori di testa dentro quei giardini di rose potate. In periferia è facile che le emozioni siano represse”. "Metal Postcard (Mitageisen)", oscuro e ipnotico singolo del disco, coincide con un'altra passione post-situazionista (come la definiva Robert Gretton, manager dei Joy Division e co-fondatore della Factory Records), singolare e irriverente del post-punk: le simpatiche e fuorvianti inclinazioni al nazismo. Mentre la stampa, ignorante e faziosa, chiedeva il perché di quei nomi e di quelle cose (il termine "Joy Division", il nome "March Violets", la Cavalcata delle Valchirie prima dei concerti dei Theatre of Hate, le svastiche di Siouxsie) le band ridevano e prendevano in giro gli interlocutori, troppo impegnati a chiedere spiegazioni per non rendersi conto del volontario caos ideologico di tali vanitas, del nichilismo e dell'elitaria distanza fra band e pubblico. Il brano è dedicato a John Heartfield, artista dadaista anti-nazista e con la dedica si gioca sia sul fatto di un vero e proprio tributo alla sua figura, sia sulla questione della sua persecuzione. Mentre Siouxsie canticchiava fra un brano e l'altro ”too many Jews for my liking” si definiva il rapporto fra leader e proseliti ma, allo stesso tempo, l'appartenenza a quella stessa tribù che il post-punk andava perseguire.

La ricerca di appartenenza ad una grande fratellanza vede The Scream il primo tassello su cui si intersecheranno generazioni di ascoltatori dark, un album ammaliante per quanto distaccato; come dice Simon Reynolds: ”I Banshees producevano musica da amplesso; se tentavi di persuadere qualcuno con Dreamhouse in sottofondo, poteva anche andarti bene; coi dischi precedenti, lo stratagemma avrebbe funzionato solo se uscivi con uno psicopatico o un vampiro”.***

The prime problem with ‘Prime Suspect’ (US)

So I’m 8 episodes into the 13 episode (1 and only) season of the US version of ‘Prime Suspect’ and I’ve figured out the biggest problem with the show- it’s the title.

Why in the world they would saddle this show with the title of one of television’s most highly acclaimed shows is a mystery. Oh, I sort of get it- they hoped the title would bring in a built-in audience who was familiar with the British show, or at least familiar with the pedigree. But it has nothing to do with its namesake beyond the lead character’s name. Don’t get me wrong, I love Maria Bello. But she’s no Helen Mirren. And that’s a good thing. Because while the underlying theme of misogyny is the same everywhere, there’s no way you can just lift the tenets of a British show and drop them into New York and have an actress play it the same in this side of the pond as another actress did over there. So they gave her different obstacles and different quirks... but still called her Jane Timoney??

Maria Bello is the heart of the show, and rightly so, and not just because she’s the lead character. Her delivery of lines often comes across as ad-libbed, but it adds to the realism of the lines. She’s completely believable as a driven hard ass who only cares about making an arrest and closing the case, at least to those who have their boxers in a twist that a woman has broken into their little boys’ club. We, of course, see the softer moments of her tiptoeing the line between determined detective and caring daughter/sister/friend. The scene in Episode 7 where she tells the alcoholic mother about her own mother’s death was both touching and devastatingly acerbic, and handled perfectly by Bello. (I can’t help but compare it to Olivia Benson’s continued “I’m a product of rape!” and Mariska Hargitay’s overwrought delivery of that story line.) 

What is really good about the show is the supporting cast. The first episode is a bit painful to watch in its obvious misogyny (not to say it doesn’t exist, but holy hell, my head hurt from getting hit with the hammer so many times), but it gets better once the writing is allowed to just tell a story, and the cast gets its feet under them. Brían F. O’Bryne is particularly good as the guy who is Jane’s strongest opponent but who also shows flashes of admiration, without it veering into happy ending territory. Kirk Avecedo is great as the no-nonsense if-she-can-do-the-job-I-don’t-care Calderon. All the men are good, to be honest, not just interacting with her, but each other. It is completely believable that they’ve all known each other for years.

The writing is good (certainly no worse than every other police drama on the major networks) and the directing/editing gives it a fresh look. My only other complaint beyond the title are the two men they’ve cast as her current and ex-boyfriend. Kenny Johnson as Matt (the current) is just... bland. I always try to look at hetero pairings and figure out what they see in each other, particularly what the woman sees in the man. (Because let’s be honest- it’s not hard to figure out what a guy sees in Maria Bello!) I just don’t get it with Matt. He’s dopey and just generic. When her ex accuses her of staying late at work to avoid having to go home, I agreed. I know they were trying to set it up like Matt was offering a family (he has a 5yr old son) and that Jane was likely trying to force herself into that role of step-mom/dutiful girlfriend, but by making Matt so bland, it didn’t make her resistance compelling. As for her ex... Peter Berg? Really? That’s the married cop who Jane slept with at risk of her reputation? Yikes. But those are small complaints, considering both characters are secondary to the rest of the show. 

It doesn’t surprise me it didn’t last. First, it was on Thursday nights, against really tough competition. Then they bounced it around to another night without much notice. Then, they replaced it with The Firm, a show that was way cheaper to produce- that got cancelled after one season. Great job, NBC.

Pop music of the 90s was fun. A number of period items aside - it is a long time since Spirit , Frank Zappa, Johnny Winter , Joe Cocker or Nation Joe and the Fish featured in a generalist best albums list - it set a template for the pop canon that has remained largely untouched for more than 40 years, by adhering to sure rules. Whereas all three movements loved completely different degrees of mainstream acceptance, a fourth, much less-recognized model was beginning to take shape. Spotlighting atonal noise and unconventional rock instruments reminiscent of drum machines, groups similar to Pere Ubu turned the pioneers of business rock, an abrasive subgenre that did not get pleasure from widespread popularity however impressed future rock bands. Many of the music created after Rome fell was commissioned by the church. The Catholic faith has an extended history of involvement (for better or worse) with the musical arts. In 600 CE Pope Gregory had the Schola Cantarum built. This was the primary music school in Europe. Ben Folds and company introduced the issue of abortion to the pop charts—from a male standpoint. A particularly fascinating twist is that it appears the male narrator of this melancholy song is egocentric and a bit of a jerk. Lyrically, this is among the most unusual hit songs of the '90s.

Originally from the Dominican Republic , bachata is without doubt one of the most popular Latin music genres right this moment. Though the making of Bachata music began again within the 1960s with the songs produced by Jose Manuel Calderon, this rhythm was not in a position to compete with the recognition that Merengue used to have. Fashionable music serves as an id badge for certain social groups, a badge that's worn with nice pride. Its bonding mechanism can, North argues, ‘be helpful to susceptible youngsters', no matter any anti-social message it could proclaim. He commends genre radio, such because the BBC's Asian Community, as being particularly useful.

In writing about many of the greatest pop information since January, I started to notice similarities across the board that weren't as pronounced in years previous — sounds were shared by artists who did not work in the same sphere and even the identical nation.
