Got Kelly-Ann Maddox’s new book today!! I really can’t wait to dive into this! I highly recommend anything from Kelly-Ann! Her first book, Rebel Witch, is my witchy Bible! She’s not only such a wealth of knowledge but she’s such a lovely human. Great place to start for beginners and also for experienced witches who might need a bit of help.

Hellooo, remember when I wanted to restart the 100 days of studying challenge? Well, the next day I found a job and have been super overwhelmed with everything. I have barely been studying but I am feeling kind of okay. I've had my new job for almost two months now and am almost used to it by now, so I hope things will start getting easier. I have also really neglected my spiritual practice and since I am exploring non-monogamy, I have been going in too many dates honestly and need to chill a bit. Idk, life is weird and I am confused about what to do with it. But Kelly-Ann Maddox' new book arrived so that's cool at least.

Hi Alex! I'm a secular witch and I've been thinking of doing some more serious research about different kind of witchcraft and the history of magical practices- I was wondering if you had some sort of reading list of thing you'd recommend for beginners, or things that helped shape your personal philosophy of your craft? No prob if not of course! Your style of practice really resonates with me and I'd love to learn more :D
Sorry it took me so long to get to this! I don't have a personal list and generally ask people what they are into and recommend a book to suit that, but I hadn't thought of one that helped form my practice. I'd end of telling you to read all the Amber Chronicles to explain how I understand Chaos Magic or an old stack of Cometbus zines or a copy of Art of War by Sun Tzu. I also really enjoyed Ellen Dugan's books at the beginning of my practice (Cottage Witchery, Garden Witchery, etc) because she was the first author that didn't make me feel like I had to follow rules and she included personal anecdotes that really felt like applied magic.
Two of my new favorites for new witches that are more educational are Beginner's Guide to the Occult by Deborah Lipp and How To Study Magic by Sarah Lyons. Both of these books give a layout of the land and give you and idea of what there is to know without telling you what to do. I think a lot of people have an urge but don't know what direction to take, and these books are kind of like signposts.
For a great books for new witches I'll always suggest @breelandwalker Grovedaughter Witchery. I also enjoy Kelly-Ann Maddox's Rebel Witch, Folk Witchcraft by Roger J Horne and Six Ways by Aidan Watcher. From there I explore my neighborhood and notice seasonal changes, books about specific interests whether witchy or not. Then start to see the throughlines in your life and practice and see how they integrate into each other. Your ethics, values, and experiences do not exist in bubbles. I think practices are most satisfying when they celebrate the whole experience.

Review
In my opinion, this is a much needed book for the witchcraft community. There are a few witchcraft books available about witching with chronic illnesses or disabilities, or how to deal with grief and loss from a pagan or witchcraft perspective. All of these have been published quite recently.
But this book is not limited to these topics, the author writes about several more, like dysfunctional or toxic relationships, addictions and how to support yourself and others when you do activism for social justice or other causes. In most of the chapters, there are ideas for ritual and spells, writing prompts, words of power and also several ideas for readings of Tarot or Oracle cards. The author encourages readers to tweak and adapt spells as they see fit. I have tried this with one of the spells and it went well. I also had ideas how to adapt another one and I surely will revisit this book from time to time.
Kelly-Ann Maddox writes, “You do not serve the craft; it is the craft that serves you” (p. 333). In my understanding, this opens up lots of new possibilities when thinking about doing witchcraft even if you are down in the dumps so to speak, or feel scared or helpless or are stressed-out. Kelly-Ann explains about what low-risk and high-risk witchcraft activities are and gives suggestions which to pursue in different situations and which better not.
She writes, „Witchcraft is a collection of tools for surviving and thriving. It is not a judgemental overseer that ascertains your worthiness to access it based on how much you seem to have your life together“ (p. 334) and „witchcraft is a resource, not a test“ (p. 334)
On a personal note, over the past years, I have quite often felt in a spiritual slump for weeks and felt like witchcraft was not longer easily available for me. I wish this book would already have been available back then.
The author has a unique and a bit eclectic witchcraft style, she doesn’t follow a specific tradition. If you want to learn about how to deal with your problem following a magickal tradition, this book is not a good choice I guess. For me, as a very eclectic witch, it’s really interesting.

Yesterday I was looking for a video to watch while I was crocheting some tarot bags and clicked on Kelly-Ann Maddox' post about what lessons Hel has taught her over the years that I had seen in passing throughout the week.
I didn't realize until one of the lessons really hit home that the like count before I got there was 411, my birthday. It might be coincidence, but I choose to believe that she meant me to find that video and listen to it all the way through.

THIS instagram post from Kelly Ann Maddox while simple was a huge game changer for me in regards to getting my butt to the altar. Your altar shouldn’t just be a place you go to when you have energy. It should also be a place for you to recharge and receive energy. That mind shift she talks about where instead of saying “I don’t have energy to go to altar” you say “I have no energy I should go to the altar” really blew my mind tbh. It’s truly reshaped the relationship I have with my altar so I wanted to share in case that wee bit of wisdom could help someone else. ✌🏻💕

This is my first post ever on Tumblr! I’m excited to have my own blog that isn’t Instagram.
This is a Sacred Patchwork Reading inspired by Kelly Ann Maddox. If you don’t know her, the content she makes is amazing and has always been a super helpful tool for my growth in the craft.
This reading has been truly insightful for this next phase of my life. I’m sort of in a transition stage or a “Death Phase” as I’ve been calling it. I’m leaving behind the unhealthy habits that have been destroying my body and my mental health.
The cards that came through were telling me to reconnect with nature and remember to ground myself. It might be easy to be swept away by all the opinions, thoughts, and ideas that come my way. But I have to remember my goals.
There was also a heavy or intense message to get back into my art. I’ve neglected my passion for too long and it’s time to get back at it. I intuitively felt that I needed to keep an art journal and from that I feel like a new goal has formed. That goal is to try to fill up an entire sketchbook with my art. I tend to leave them unfinished, but I’m going to really push myself to change that.
There was an unusual message that came forward during the reading which was “The Greenman”. I’ve never really worked with the Greenman or done much research into him. But the message was clear. I think he may have a message or a lesson for me that I need to hear. So I will be investigating that soon.
There were a few more messages but I’d rather keep those in my journal. What did you think? Have you ever done a reading like this? Let me know!
