The album blends different influences to create a unique lineup of tracks that are meditative, dance worthy, yet lyrically poignant and emotional, too. “Sonically, it surveys several different facets of Black dance music that aren’t usually presented alongside each other, but that I’ve always seen as related like digital jungle and dancehall music, techno, and house,” Kelela tells Vogue. “I show these connections by mixing the songs into one another, as if they were being DJ’ed. Baptismal water sounds also aid transitions for a full on immersive experience.”

She felt a dance record was the right way to delve into these topics. “This album is for those who connect with these ideas, but don’t want to harden,” says Kelela. “I love making club music, but I always want you to be able to go home and discover a depth that’s productive and healing when you’re listening in solitude.”

1. Who makes the first move and how?

- they both hold out on their feelings for quite some time till myrah realizes that she may have found someone more stubborn than her. While at a new year’s eve party, they do share a kiss. Then Aemond avoids contact with myrah for like a week 💀 so she thinks she read the situation wrong. But Aemond is just bad at feelings. Takes Helaena (very og fcc of her) forcing them in a room together so she can stop hearing them whine about the other.

2. Who is the most insecure and what makes them feel better?

- hmm they have their own different set of insecurities but in terms of the relationship probably Aemond. Especially in the beginning when they were still in that awkward ‘we clearly like each other but we haven’t defined anything yet’ phase. He has some abandonment/trust issues bc of his family dynamic. It makes him think Myrah will one day wake up and just disregard him. Once they are official, I think things get better. Also frankly him working out his own feelings and self esteem issues for himself.

Also Myrah is a bit of social butterfly, so naturally people are drawn to her. He’d be worried she would want someone a bit more outgoing. But myrah enjoys the pragmatic and quiet way Aemond approaches life. Sometimes she’s even envious of it.

9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?

- one of the first dates they have is a karoke night. Myrah begs aemond to take her. She, of course makes him serenade her. He hates every minute of it but it’s still one of the cutest things myrah has ever seen.

As for myrah… idk she doesn’t get embarrassed too easily. Or at least she has a much better poker face than most. But one night, after particularly rough week at work, she managed to down a bottle of wine by herself. Got piss drunk, tried to go on an adventure with Aemond trying to stop her. She barely made it out the door, wiped out in the hallway. She woke up the next day with a bruise on her knee and a pounding headache. Aemond had to hold back a laugh telling her about the fall 😭

10. What two songs, two books and two luxury items do they take to a desert island?

Aemond: Unsainted and Dead Memories by Slipknot / the alchemist and Dracula / his Celine leather jacket and the rolex his mom got him for graduating university

Myrah: frontline by kelela and I say a little prayer by Aretha Franklin / pride and prejudice by Jane Austen and The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison / her nespresso and the Hermes scarf Aemond for her Christmas one year.
