ASK-A-THON!
Don't mind the title, I wanted something simple but neat. Anyways, what is the ask-a-thon? Simple!
Ask a question directed to a character and I'll answer as that character! This allows for all of you to understand my headcanons and hopefully I finally get an excuse to ramble with an actual audience.
SO WHAT CHARACTERS CAN YOU ASK?!

OTHER QUESTIONS
I will accept questions for a small handful of other characters that aren't in big fandom lists, as follows:
SILVERee (Criminal Case)
Any of the Down To The Wire cast (Criminal Case)
Any of the Elders (Cookie Run: Kingdom)
Madeleine Cookie (Cookie Run: Kingdom)
Kain (Blustone)
Karl Steiner (Blustone)
Geranium (Blustone)
Kamishiro Rui (Project SEKAI)
The Koresawas (a set of PJSK OCs, family)
NOTE: I have done a LOT of general headcanon world building, so if a character's interpretation is confusing, bare in mind it's my own perception of said character. Plus, there are chunks of world building that me and my friends have developed together so I'm more used to that specific perception of certain characters and things.

January 15th 1803 saw the birth of Marjory Fleming, “Pet Marjory”, child writer and poet, who died in 1811 of meningitis at the age of 8 years and 11 months.
Marjory “Pet” Fleming was an extraordinary child prodigy, left poems, letters and a journal that are now one of the treasures of the National Library of Scotland; and in 1889 Sir Leslie Stephen, Virginia Woolf’s father, wrote an entry about her for the original Dictionary of National Biography, believing that ‘no more fascinating infantile author has ever appeared. What makes this all the more remarkable is, Marjory was a mere 8 years old when she died.
A distant relative and said to be admired by Sir Walter Scott, although there is no real evidence they ever met Robert Louis Stevenson and Mark Twain also thought highly of her, Marjory Fleming was a child prodigy poet.
Marjory spent most of her sixth, seventh and eighth years in Edinburgh being tutored by her teenage cousin, Isabella Keith. Isabella is mentioned is the somewhat odd opening line of Marjory’s famous journal: ‘Many people are hanged for Highway robbery Housebreking Murder &c. &c. Isabella teaches me everything I know and I am much indebted to her she is learnen witty & sensible.’
Marjory returned to Kirkcaldy in July 1811, but wrote on 1 September to her cousin, ‘We are surrounded with measles at present on every side’. She herself contracted measles in November and although she apparently recovered, died in December from what is now thought to have been meningitis. She was a month short of her ninth birthday.
Marjory was an accomplished and witty poet and diarist although she was not published until 50 years after her death. Her writings became hugely popular in the Victorian period albeit with the published editions severely altered as some her her language was thought inappropriate for an eight year old. The first account of her was given by a London journalist in the Fife Herald and reprinted as a booklet entitled Pet Marjorie: a Story of Child Life Fifty Years Ago. The nickname ‘Pet’ and the spelling of her name with ‘ie’ were inventions of her biographer: both appear on Marjory’s gravestone in Abbotshall Kirkyard, Kirkcaldy erected in 1930.
Marjory’s precocious intellect is noted in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography: ‘She records enjoying the poems of Pope and Gray, the Arabian Nights, Ann Radcliff’s ‘misteris [sic] of udolpho’, the Newgate calendar, and ‘tails’ by Maria Edgworth and Hannah More.’ Her abilities are also apparent in the pithy comments in her journal and in her valiant attempts to write in rhyming couplets.
Robert Louis Stevenson is quoted as saying, ‘Marjory Fleming was possibly – no, I take back possibly – she was one of the noblest works of God.’
The manuscripts of Marjory Fleming’s writings can be seen in the National Library of Scotland. You can also see more about her here https//www.trivia-library.com/b/biography-of-scottish-chil…

"SOLDIER JAILED 9 MONTHS FOR THEFTS OF BICYCLES," Toronto Star. September 13, 1943. Page 23. ---- Pte. John Good Sold Machines Worth $80 for $30 ---- HAD BAD RECORD --- "B" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Browne. Private John Good pleaded guilty to three charges of bicycle theft. The bicycles, Detective Walter Scott informed the court, were worth $80 and had been sold for $30. "Accused has a record," said Crown Council F. I. Malone. "He will be sentenced to nine months on each charge, concurrent sentences," said the court.
Pleading guilty to gambling on the Lord's Day, 13 men were each assessed $10 or 10 days. Plainclothesman James Henry testified he and other officers had found accused shooting dice Sunday in a Markham St. house.
Appearing for sentence on a charge of breaking into a branch of the Caulfield Dairy and stealing money, William Brossoit and Robert Dorland, who previously pleaded guilty, were each sentenced to four months definite and three months indefinite.
R. Baptie denied ill-treating a dog by beating it with his fists. He had only slapped it for running away, he stated. After hearing three witnesses testify the dog was making a loud outcry as if it had been run over by a car, a fine of $15 and costs was imposed.
"If you would see the dog greet me at night when I come home you wouldn't think it was ill-treated." said Baptie. "I admit I lost my temper after chasing it all over the district, but I only slapped it."
"Dumb animals soon forget," said the court.
BOY, 16, JAILED ---- "A" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Menzies. For stealing $13 from a Queen St. W. restaurant, Steve Hrychuck, 16, who pleaded guilty and who is at present on probation, was sentenced to three months definite and three months indefinite.
"He is very young," declared Austin Ross, defence counsel.
"Unfortunately a lot of stealing is being done by young men these days," replied the court.
Constable Jarratt said accused stole a box containing the money. "I found the box in his room. He had $6 left," said the officer.
Three months definite and three months indefinite was the sentence given John Thompson, 20. He admitted stealing a suit and a number of newspapers.
FINE FIVE GIPSIES ---- "C" Police Court. City Hall, Magistrate Pritchard. Pleading guilty, before Magistrate Pritchard, of failing to report for re-registration, Archie Bruno, Molly Mitchell, and Harold Bruno, were each fined $25 or 30 days. At the expiration of the term, if the fines are not paid, they will be handed. over to the military authorities. Louis Burt who pleaded guilty of failing to keep his registrar advised of an address where mail would reach him, was fined $25 or 30 days.
All four are members of the gipsy colony and were picked up in the recent round-up in the downtown district.
Theodore Butch, another gipsy. charged with failing to give his registrar his proper address, was fined $25 or 30 days.
FINE DRIVER $35 ---- D Police Court, City Hall. Magistrate Gullen. Pleading guilty of careless driving, Ernest Antilla was fined $35 and costs or 15 days.
"Accused's car." said P.C. Archie Gordon, "travelled 224 feet with one wheel locked after hitting a T.T.C. grinder, while he was south-bound on Yonge St."
IGNORES RED LIGHT ---- County Police Court, County Buildings, Magistrate Keith. "You drove through a red light and if anybody had happened to be walking there, he might have been killed," said Magistrate Keith. He fined Ross Comer $15 and costs for careless driving. On a charge of failing to notify the department of highways of change of ownership of the ear he was driving, he was fined $3 or three days.
"When they are sold out they can't do anything about it," said court in fining William Kirkpatrick $10 and costs or 10 days for causing a disturbance at a brewer's store on Saturday. "I had been waiting in line for about half an hour and then they said there was no more," said accused, pleading guilty.
Wallace J. Atkinson, 21, charged with failing to produce a registration card and with attempting to steal an automobile was remanded to Sept. 17. Bail was set at $1,000.
"I don't believe the evidence of accused," said the magistrate in finding James Bradley guilty of assaulting a woman. Accused was fined $10 and costs or 10 days and was ordered to stay away from her home.
The woman who said she was the mother of three children and that her husband was overseas, said Bradley had come into her rooms and had knocked her down with his fist.
She admitted having a hand on a beer bottle when Bradley approached.
"He said, so you want to sling beer bottles, and then he hit me." said complainant.
"Bradley took up a beer bottle and said he was going to beat her face so badly that no hospital would be able to fix it up again," testified Alfred Wells.
"I went into the room to talk to Wells," declared the accused, "and the woman took up a beer bottle and made for me. I took the bottle from her and pushed her back. "I did not either with my fist, I merely pushed her."

💙 Walter Family 🧪🎀 FNF AU 🎀🧪
🧪💙 Keith B. Walter 💙🧪
🧪- 16 years old
🧪- 1.50
🧪 Heterochromia
🧪 Bisexual and Asexual
🧪 German
🧪 He has a sister
🧪 Singer
🧪 Alchemist
🧪 Reserved and a little bit shy but when he treats with friends or when hes trying to help people is more friendly, a genius but a little clueless.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Since he was 6, he seemed to be very smart, more than other kids of his age, that caused him to be a victim of bullying but he always haved his family support, that helped him get over it, lately he leaved normal school and started to study in his own house, sometimes with the help of their parents but mainly by him in person.
The little village where he grew up is still a little bit outdated so their old traditions are still in the village's daily life, one of this traditions that taked Keith's attention was alchemy, the idea of making great thing out of simple things maked him get very excited about it, so at the age of 7 he started to learn about it really faster, his family were very supportive about it and constantly helping him with the ingredients and more of that.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
One day when he was searching more minerals with his sister, they met one of the actual best friends of Keith, Miku, she's the responsible of Keith and Seraphine's interest in music.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
In the same age, Keith started to try more things with his own formulas, this attracted too much problems because their reactions sometimes went wrong, affecting the village and gaining bad reputation to the family, his family were worried about that, specifically his mom, but nothing really serious.
Not all of his formulas were a success, some ones maked him get chemical burns ( actually hiding them with his gloves) and one important accident, when he was trying to make a new formula for hair loss problem ( trying to help the village people with this problem ) it went wrong and explode making that red hair stripe in Keith's hair, he tried to dye it but didn't worked.
Everything was okay while the years passed but one event that marked Keith and his family was when he was 13, one day when he was trying to make another thing to help the village, something went wrong again, but was serious, that maked all the people be very upset, more than before, people started to attack Keith's family house in protest, this maked him get stressed, he was confused, he was just trying to help all the village and now they accused him and his family of being a potential danger, in a act of frustration and anger, he decided to make their accusations real and started to make a new component, one potentialy dangerous, his dad tried to persuade him, he didn't listened to his dad and in a struggle with him, he let fall the component in his table full of more formulas and it maked react all of them exploding...after 4 days, Keith woke up in a hospital, he was just a little bit hurted, that was a miracle, he was still confused but when he remembered everything, he asked for his father...but he was dead, he didn't survived the accident, he killed his own father.
Because of that, his mom was very upset about him and alchemy in general, in act of prevent him from being imprisoned and because she wanted him to be away, his mom sent him to another country with his sister, Keith was in a big depression because of everything, feeling guilty.
His sister and him never told about their history to anyone.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Now in USA, he got into a school like the old times, the first months were difficult, he was very shy but when he met one girl, Giselle, he became more friendly, they became best friends, and then, Giselle introduced her friend Nene to him, and because of Nene he met Pico, Darnell and his first love interest, Cassandra, since he met Cass, he was very attracted to her, she wasn't but loves Keith so much as a friend, he started to show her his alchemy skills, trying to impress her, and it worked, he was trying everything to conquer her but it didn't worked, instead of that, Cass started to see him as a lil brother figure but he didn't noticed that.
Another closet friend of him was Pico, they're best friends, well, Keith see him as a best friend but Pico falled in love with him.
One year later, because of Cassandra's personal problems, she attacked the entire school with a group of friends making a school shooting, that surprised Keith but he remembered the whole thing in the village and the way he became just because an anger attack and tried to confront her but failed at it, she tried to kill him but was helped by Pico, Keith was very disappointed, he was losing someone again.
When everything finished and after days, he never saw Pico, Nene, Darnell and Cassandra again, he lost his friends.
The only friend he had was Giselle, they became more closer but nothing more and then they became a singer duo.
In the next years, he met a new girl in the school, her name was Sky, he treated her really nice and then she falled in love with him but in a obssesive way, she was trying always to be with him but he wasn't interested in her.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
When he became 16, he found Pico again, but something was different with him, he became more agressive and then, like with Cass he tried to confront him with a singing battle and with a discourse, it didn't worked that day but after two days, Pico searched him again and made the passes with Keith, after that, they became boyfriends.
At present, Keith is still searching Cassandra and still misses his mother, he hopes that one day she will forgive him.

🎀 -19 years old
🎀 -1.68
🎀 -Hetero
🎀 -German
🎀 -Singer and a member of a group called K/DA
🎀 -Keith's sister
🎀 -Very extrovert, a supportive person, always wanting people to be happy, defined as the starry-eyed songstress and a dreamy girl.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Seraphine is Keith's big sister, she's a very supportive and friendly person, since she was younger, she always been very talented at music things but she didn't formally dedicated to it until later, other of her talents was curative medicine using flowers of her mom shop, then she was able to improve it thanks to Keith's alchemy.
The interest of her to that type of medicine was because she have a problem that causes her to perceive the noises more louder than anyone and that caused her very painful headaches, so it helped so much.
When she was 10, her dad maked a machine that regulated her problem, now she uses it most of the time.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
When she and Keith met Miku, they became a very closer friend of Miku, constantly visiting her house and was then when Miku told them that she was a musician and then, Seraphine instantly got interested on being a musician too, so she started to take it seriously and sometimes she was on the village's kiosk playing the guitar and singing for all people, her goal was to make people happy with her music, the bad reputation because of his brother alchemy maked it more difficult but people seemed to like her music.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
When all the Keith problematic happened and her dad was dead, she was very sad, she loved her dad so much but she was sad and worried too because of his brother and the big problem he was in now with all the village and his mom, when their mother decided to send Keith away, she insisted to go with him and their mom accepted it, the last time she went to her dad room ( or what was left of it ) she found a birthday present box with her name in it, her birthday was close and that was the present that he was going to give her, she took the box and opened it, a very beautiful microphone was in there with a small note, it said "For the best singer ♡"; she started crying, that was the last gift of her dad.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Now in USA, she became a worker on a coffee shop, she received money from her mother but she also wanted to get it by her own, one day when she was working on a event in the coffee shop, she participated in the karaoke just for fun, in that same day, a group of girl went to the shop just hang out, they were from a famous group, K/DA, when they heared Seraphine's voice, they interested so much in her and asked her to be in their group, surprised for that oportunity she didn't asked more and accepted.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
In respect of Keith's new friends, she always was very friendly to them and she was the only one who noticed by herself that Pico was in love with Keith but she didn't talked about it, also she knowed about Keith's love interest in Cassandra.
When the school shooting happened, she was very worried about her brother, she promised to herself about protect him and was frustrated about the situation, for her luck, he was okay but when he told her everything and his loss, she was the one who helped him searching his friends again.
🎀🎵🎀🎵🎀🎵🎀🎵🎀🎵🎀🎵🎀🎵🎀🎵🎀
🎀🌸 Nolla U. Walter 🌸🎀
🌸 -37 years old
🌸 -1.60
🌸 -Hetero
🌸 -German
🌸 -Worker in her own flower shop
🌸 -Keith and Seraphine's mother
🌸 -Widow
🌸 - She used to be a lovely person and very extrovert, now is a little bit more reserved, she still interacts with people in a friendly way but not much as before.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Nolla is the mother of Keith and Seraphine, when she was younger, she used to be a folkloric dancer and singer in a tavern, one day she met a guy that was impressed with her talent, they talked for a while and they started to hang out more, after months they started to be a couple, they haved their first child when Nolla was 18, when she was pregnant, she leaved her job in the taverns and started her own bussines with flowers, opening her flower shop with her boyfriend. After Seraphine was born, they decided to get married.
After 3 years, they decided to have another child, Keith, they were a happy family, with their brilliant and talented childs and their small bussines, the problems started when the failures of Keith's inventions appeared, the family started to get bad reputation but it wasn't too serious for them.
Before of the big accident, she was she was doubtful if she would continue accepting Keith's inventions, she didn't wanted problems with the village but as a supportive mother, she didn't wanted to limit him, when the accident occurred she regretted so much that she didn't limited him, she was full of anger, she blamed the village people for having started the conflict and blamed her own son for being incompetent with it, now she hated everything related to alchemy, maybe it wasn't Keith's fault but she didn't wanted to see him anymore and was when she decided to send him away, it was also to avoid him to being imprisoned.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
nowadays, she's still on Germany, working on her flower shop, the bad reputation is still up but not as before, the conflict stopped when her husband died, people felt bad about it and some people are very supportive with Nolla.
She isn't as happy as before, she tries to look happy and more friendly in front of people but when she's alone, she's still crying for his husband, never forgeting him, one of her more supportive friends is Miku, after everything she started to work at Nolla's flower shop and always trying to be an emotional support for Nolla, she started to see Miku as her daughter.
even if she won't admit it, she misses Keith so much.

Talking Together: The Earliest Record of A Scottish Parliament?
(A ninteenth century engraving of the great seal of Alexander II. Source- Wikimedia Commons)
On 8th April 1236, letters were issued on behalf of King Alexander II of Scotland, recording the settlement of a recent dispute between the Cistercian monks of Melrose and the nobleman Roger Avenel. Although at first sight this may appear unremarkable, the document which contains the Crown’s record of this settlement can be considered the earliest official evidence of a Scottish parliament.
Some time before 1236, Roger Avenel and his ancestors had granted use of some land in Eskdale (Dumfriesshire) to Melrose Abbey. The Abbey was heavily involved in wool and leather production. Access to upland grazing for the abbey’s livestock, as well as timber and arable, would have made this Eskdale land extremely valuable to the monks. Unfortunately for them, Roger Avenel also felt entitled to use the land exactly as he pleased, and had no qualms about obstructing the same monks he and his predecessors had endowed. Despite the terms of his previous charter, Roger and his men loosed their horses and other animals on the land, and destroyed the houses, ditches, and enclosures made by the Abbey. In order to settle “the controversies stirred between them on this account”, the dispute between the two parties was brought before the highest judge in the realm- King Alexander II of Scotland. Eventually, a compromise was reached, providing for the use of the land by both Melrose Abbey and Roger Avenel, albeit in different ways. The warring parties were thus reconciled, “in the presence of our barons at the colloquium at Liston”, in the year of grace 1235.
It is likely that the letters which record this settlement were made at least a couple of weeks after this assembly at Kirkliston, since they are dated 8th April “in the twenty-second year of the reign of our lord the king”- i.e. 1236.* The document itself was witnessed by Andrew, bishop of Moray; Clement, bishop of Dunblane; Walter Comyn, the earl of Menteith; Walter, the Steward of Scotland; Walter Oliphant, justiciar of Lothian; Henry Balliol; David Keith, the Marischal; and Geoffrey, the clerk of the liverance. This cannot be taken as a list of everyone who attended the ‘colloquium’ at Kirkliston, though I would argue that most of these men were probably present anyway. Nonetheless the letter is possibly the earliest surviving “official” Crown record of what we now call the Scottish parliament- though this is by no means certain since the early history of this institution is shadowy and fraught with ambiguity...
(The old kirk of Liston, presumably near to where the ‘colloquium’ of 1235 took place. The early development of “parliament” in Scotland is even more obscure than in neighbouring England. Very few Crown documents have survived from the thirteenth century which relate to meetings that could be considered parliaments, and even the terminology used to describe the kinds of assembly we now call parliament can be ambiguous. Thirteenth century writers do not always use the same terminology we would expect, and it is unclear whether the words they actually use had exactly the same meaning in the thirteenth century as they do now, and indeed whether these words were used consistently. Some mediaeval chroniclers do refer to certain assemblies which were held by the kings of Scotland before 1235, and which they give the name “parliament”. In one Anglo-Norman work, the twelfth century chronicler Jordan Fantosme states that William the Lion held “sun plenier parlement” (translated as his “plenary” or “full” parliament) in 1173, when he wanted to consult the wise men of his kingdom on whether or not he should support the rebellion of Henry “the Young King” against the latter’s father Henry II of England. “Gesta Annalia”, a late thirteenth century Scottish chronicle, also uses a Latinised version of the French term “parliament”, to describe an assembly held by King Alexander II in 1215. However, no official documents associated with these “parliaments” survive, and the chroniclers who referred to them did not define their use of the term.
In records produced on behalf of the Scottish Crown, the word “parliament” itself doesn’t appear very often before the end of the thirteenth century. However quite a few surviving records do use the Latin word “colloquium” to refer to certain assemblies of the king and his barons- indeed this is the word used to describe the meeting held at Kirkliston in 1235. “Colloquium” has a similar meaning to the French word “parliament”, in that they both loosely describe a “talking together” or a discussion. In thirteenth century England, the Latin and French terms were often treated as interchangeable, and so early twentieth century historians, searching for early evidence of a similar institution in Scotland, were quick to identify any colloquium mentioned in Scottish records as a parliament in the usual sense of the word. However the word also carries its fair share of ambiguity. We do not know whether a “colloquium” in thirteenth century Scotland would have looked anything like our idea of a mediaeval parliament, nor whether the term always meant the same thing, nor can we identify what it was that set a “colloquium” apart from any other assembly or council in which the king of Scots consulted his leading vassals. There is also the danger that, having first encountered the terms “colloquium” and parliament in English and French contexts, historians have gone looking for a similar phrase in Scottish sources and inadvertently analysed the evidence through a subjective lens, based on a preconceived notion of what a parliament was.
Although more recent historians have acknowledged this danger, unfortunately the nature of the surviving evidence seems to compel them to work within the same framework, using the existed, if limited, terminology as best they can. The “colloquium” of thirteenth century Scotland does seem to be the closest thing we have to a word for the kind of formal assembly of the political community, chaired by a king, which we might describe more easily as a parliament in late mediaeval and early modern Scotland. It is also possible (indeed, likely) that the colloquium held at Kirkliston in 1235 was not the first of its kind. Nonetheless with such fragmentary evidence, it is probably reasonable to view that assembly as a very distant ancestor of the Scottish parliament that we know today.
So what might this parliament have looked like? During the Late Middle Ages, yet another phrase was commonly used to refer to both parliaments and general councils in Scotland- these were described as meetings of the “Three Estates”. This seems to have originated from the mediaeval theory that a Christian society should be made up of three sorts of people: those who prayed, those who fought, and those who worked. Different parts of Christian Europe developed regional variations on this theory but, in the context of the Scottish parliament, the “First Estate” (those who prayed) tended to refer to the higher clergy (bishops and important abbots). The “Second Estate” (those who fought) meant the higher nobility (from dukes down to lords of parliament and richer freeholders), and the “Third Estate” (those who worked) only referred to the commissioners elected to represent the country’s burghs (so not the common man as such).
However, in 1235 this parliamentary model had not yet evolved. The exact composition of thirteenth century Scottish parliaments is obscure, but in the record of the colloquium held at Kirkliston only the king and his ‘barons’ are mentioned. Evidence from other thirteenth century assemblies indicates that it was primarily members of the higher nobility who attended these- earls and the most powerful barons. Although they are not mentioned in the record of the Kirkliston assembly, the kingdom’s bishops also seem to have been permitted to attend these other “parliaments”. Burgh representatives do not appear until the 1290s, and A.A.M. Duncan has argued that they were not a regular fixture until much later. The other freeholders of Scotland (below the rank of earl and great baron) also do not seem to have attended parliament much before the fourteenth century. So the colloquium at Kirkliston in 1235 was probably just a meeting of the king and his leading nobles, though perhaps some of the bishops also attended.
In any case, the number of attendees would probably have been quite small- G.W.S. Barrow has argued that they would have “numbered in dozens or scores rather than in hundreds”. Also the Scottish parliament was always unicameral, in contrast to the English institution, which seems to have developed its separate Houses by at least the mid-fourteenth century. There was also no fixed location where parliaments were held as yet, and aside from the 1235 assembly at Kirkliston, during the thirteenth century meetings were also held in Stirling, Roxburgh, Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, and Scone, among other places. Like the king, parliament would remain peripatetic for centuries, and though Edinburgh eventually emerged as the most popular location during the reigns of James II and James III, the Scottish parliament only established itself there permanently in the seventeenth century**. Other customs associated with pre-Union Scottish parliaments- for example the Riding of Parliament or the Lords of the Articles- were also probably unknown in the thirteenth century.
(The Scottish parliament or Estates processing in the late seventeenth century. Source- Wikimedia Commons)
Wherever they met and whoever attended, mediaeval parliaments must have differed in some way from regular assemblies. Their most basic function was to provide an opportunity for the king to consult the political community on important issues. But historians are divided over just what kind of issue which would have dominated proceedings at early parliaments. Twelfth and thirteenth century chroniclers seem to have been interested in the assembly’s role as a venue for political debate and diplomatic activity. However this was probably only part of the story. Meanwhile parliament’s financial role (approving extraordinary taxation) which was to be such an important factor in the development of the institution in England, does not appear to have been quite so central in Scotland. A third function of most parliaments- one which is particularly important in our own day- is to develop and enact laws. This was probably performed by early Scottish parliaments too, but we lack evidence for substantial legislative activity before the fourteenth century.
In 1928, while surveying the evidence of earlier thirteenth century assemblies as a preliminary to their investigation of Edward I of England’s Scottish parliaments, the historians H.G. Richardson and George Sayles focused on parliament’s function as the highest court in the land. They came to the conclusion that, “the primary purpose of these early parliaments of Scotland was the dispensing of justice.” Certainly this is the role which we can see the colloquium at Kirkliston performing in the single surviving record which that assembly produced. The next documented colloquium, which met in 1248 at Stirling, is also known only from the record of an arbitration which took place there, again under the eye of Alexander II, while legal cases again crop up on several occasions during the reigns of Alexander III and John Balliol and the minority of Margaret (the remainder of the documented parliamentary business during the late thirteenth century is largely concerned with international diplomacy, which may however simply be due to the fact that this was the only subject which was considered important enough to record). However, in the 1960s, A.A.M. Duncan disagreed with Richardson and Sayles’ verdict, pointing out that the fragmentary nature of the evidence makes it difficult to assign special significance to any one function of the early parliaments. For his own part, Duncan characterised the early Scottish parliament as a venue for the promotion of the Crown’s interests, and “the occasion on which the rights of the king could be asserted by customary judicial process with final authority.”
(The coat of arms of Alexander II of Scotland, as portrayed in the thirteenth century ‘Historia Anglorum’ of Matthew Paris. Reproduced by permission of the British Library under a Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.)
Given that any debate which can be had about the early Scottish parliament’s early activities is severely limited by the patchy and ambiguous evidence available, it is perhaps unsurprising that some historians have tended to dismiss the colloquium of 1235 and other early assemblies as hurriedly as possible, moving onto the better documented meetings after 1286. As discussed above, sometimes this has even led to doubt over whether the 1235 meeting can fairly be called the earliest parliament at all. As Keith M. Brown, Alastair J. Mann, and Roland J. Tanner state in their historical introduction to the online “Records of the Parliament of Scotland” project:
“Between 1235 and 1286, therefore, parliament exists for historians in a kind of limbo – we can see that the term is used (in the early colloquium form), but can tell almost nothing about what was meant by that term. What set the early colloquia apart from previous assemblies of the king and his subjects has been lost, although there could have been a clear distinction, and the primary purpose of those early assemblies is unknown – whether they were political, judicial or legislative. There are no criteria that can be used for parliament’s emergence other than the moment that contemporary Scots began to refer to their assemblies in official sources by either the word parliamentum or colloquium. The debate about the earliest known Scottish parliament, therefore, becomes very simple – it was the Kirkliston colloquium held in 1235. Whether this was the first assembly to be referred to as such, or whether it differed in any significant way from the royal councils and assemblies that had occurred before will almost certainly never be known.”
If there is anything else to be said, it is only that, over the centuries which followed the Kirkliston meeting, the Scottish parliament evolved in many different ways, most of which could not have been foreseen by any of the men present in 1235. The mediaeval institution did at different points in its history perform a variety of functions, whether political, financial, legislative, or judicial, and although the Crown did often attempt to use parliament to bolster its own position, communication between the two was not a one-way street, and on several occasions the Estates talked back. In the early modern period, further development of the institutions and ceremonial associated with parliament occurred, while the abolition of the institution in 1707 followed a century which had seen parliament operating in new territory on more than one occasion. The current devolved parliament, which met for the first time in nearly three centuries in 1999 and usually sits at Holyrood*** is not only a very different body to that which met at Kirkliston over six hundred years earlier, but has itself changed since it was reconvened over twenty years ago. Nonetheless, a line can be drawn between the shadowy, probably elitist, assembly which took place in 1235 and the principle of public consultation which is supposed to underly Scottish democracy today. Though political systems and values must inevitably evolve over time, and though many historical events are obscure, difficult to define, and not easily subsumed into a greater narrative, the colloquium at Kirkliston is at least worth remembering as the first stage in, “the journey begun long ago and which has no end.”

Additional Notes:
*In many official and religious documents from the Middle Ages, the year was reckoned to begin on 25th March. So if the colloquium took place in 1235 but the letters were not made until 8th April 1236, then at least a fortnight must have passed between the date when the settlement between Melrose and Roger Avenel actually took place and the date when a document was created to record this.
** Interestingly Holyrood, where the modern parliament is now based, was technically in a separate burgh from Edinburgh in the Middle Ages, the burgh of Canongate.
***When it is not in recess, which it is currently in the run-up to the May elections.

"STOLEN TIRES FOUND UNDER PILE OF COAL," Toronto Star. May 11, 1943. Page 31. --- John Wheeler and Frank Dunn Admit Stealing Soldier's Property ---- "SERIOUS," SAYS CADI ---- County Police, Court, County Buildings, Magistrate Keith. "This is a very serious offence," said Magistrate Keith, remanding in custody until Thursday for sentence, John Wheeler and Frank Dunn who pleaded guilty of theft of four-car wheels, tires and tubes and a car radio.
Sgt. Wilfred McLellan of the Scarboro police said the accused men removed the tires and radio from a car owned by Ralph Butwell of the Canadian Army. The car was parked in the yard at the rear of the owner's mother's home. Two of the tires McLellan explained were sold for $25. but have since been recovered. The other tires and radio were found covered by a pile of coal in a garage at the rear of a house occupied by one of the accused men, the officer said.
A PUBLIC MISCHIEF ---- B Police Court, City Hall. Magistrate Browne Appearing before Magistrate Browne. George Gosden, 30, of Merriton. Ont., pleaded guilty to a charge of being a public mischief.
"Accused, from out of town, visiting at 238 Queen St. E., loaned his car to three men staying at that address on May 2 and the following day when they informed him they had been chased by police and the car wrecked in Rosedale ravine, he went to No. 4 police station and reported it stolen," said Detective A. Morrison,
"Why did you do this?" asked His Worship.
"I wanted to get back home to work without any trouble." said Gosden. "I am married and have three children to support. I only Icarned since this happened what. kind of people I lent the car to."
"I will remand you to May 18 for further investigation." said His Worship.
"You will go to the penitentiary for two years," Magistrate Browne told Walter Cummings when he appeared for sentence on a charge of theft of cash and cheques the property of National Grocers. "You have a bad record," said the court.
"I was in the army for two years." said Cummings. "And were in jail 10 days in 1942," added the bench.
"It takes no brains to make a fool of yourself," Magistrate Browne told John Tomlinson, 17, to whom he gave suspended sentence and probation for one year on a charge of auto theft.
Tomlinson was jointly charged with a juvenile who was also given suspended sentence and probation for a year.
Roy Frederick Winterfield, charged with having burglars' tools in his possession, and the theft of a license marker, elected trial by jury and was committed for trial.
Constable Cavanagh testified that early on May 3, with Constable Graham, he saw accused sitting behind the wheel of a car at Yonge St. and Castlefield Ave. Investigation disclosed a U.S. license plate in the car and an Ontario license on the car. Winterfield claimed the ear was his father's and that "jimmy" found in the trunk was used by his father at work. He was wearing a pair of gloves, Cavanagh testified.
L. J. Lambert. Jr., a United States citizen, living in Hamilton and travelling on war work between the two countries, testified that his car had been stolen the previous evening when he had left it for less than two minutes to buy papers. He had recovered it from Toronto police the next day. The bar found in his car was not his, he testified.
L. H. McKay, York township, testified that his license plate, later found on Lambert's car, had been stolen that night from outside his home.
"That will be sufficient for a committal," ruled the court.
LEFT, BUT CAME BACK --- "D" Police Court, at City Hall, Magistrate Woodliffe.
Before Magistrats Woodliffe in "D" police court today, Samuel Donerchowski pleaded not guilty of careless driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and guilty of having liquor in an illegal place.
"I saw the car leave the scene. of the accident and took the license number." said Clayton Lang. "Police went away because the car and driver were gone. Accused came back and so did the police."
"The second time we arrived," said P.C. Wheeldon, "accused's car was parked about 60 feet from the scene of the accident. We found two bottles of beer in his car."
"I feel that this man can be given the benefit of the doubt in regard to the failing to remain charge," said Magistrate Woodliffe. "I am imposing a fine of $25 and costs or 30 days for careless driving and recommend that his license be suspended. On the liquor charge he will pay $10 or one month."
WAS TOO FORCEFUL --- "C" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Prentice Ben Rosenberg pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting Margaret Nelson.
"My girl friend and I were looking at a car on Spadina Ave.," complainant told Magistrate Prentice. "This man looked out of a window and called me a name. Then he came down and hit me in the face."
"They looked suspicious to me," said Rosenberg. "I had a flag and doo-dad on my car, and the Nelson woman stood on the running board and tried to pull down the doo-dad. I came down on the street and they came at me and tore my shirt to shreds. I got socked in the eye. I hit the Nelson woman and pushed them away."
"I think more force was used than necessary," said the court, convicting and fining accused $10 or 10 days.
