my thoughts on the whole “caulifla and kale fusing” thing
Honestly, I was apprehensive as hell when I first heard the spoiler, but after giving it some thought this could actually be really cool.
The reason I was apprehensive had less to do with Caulifla and Kale as characters, so much as the overall pacing of this arc. I was totally cool with the idea of them fusing. I was, however, less cool with the idea of spending the next three episodes focused on B characters, regardless how much I personally like said B characters, in a tournament that already suffers from severe arc fatigue. With Hit gone, U6′s fate has been sealed. Why drag this out any longer? Eliminate them, make us cry when they get erased, then move the fuck on.
Honestly, though? This direction makes sense, and will most likely turn out just fine writing-wise. Let me explain.
First of all, Kale and Caulifla currently, despite all their “bullshit power boosts,” are nowhere near competitive in the tournament. Sure, Caulifla achieving SSJ2 was rushed as hell, but the reason it doesn’t bother me as much as it bothers some others is that there’s not much she can really do at SSJ2 tier. Kale’s raw strength in berserk form is higher, yes, but being mindless in that state is a huge weakness that still keeps her balanced as a fighter overall. Like, you could literally just dodge her attacks until she falls off the stage. The tournament isn’t just about raw strength.
Point being, neither of them could really turn the tides in U6′s favor in any meaningful way. Hit tried (albeit failed) to sacrifice himself to take out Jiren while counting on the U6 Saiyans to “do their part to win the tournament,” and Cabba... well, didn’t exactly go out protecting the girls, but that was his goal in his episode. He went out because Frieza is an asshole and I guess he overestimated himself, since he did agree to fight him in the first place. Though I kinda doubt Frieza would have just taken no for an answer but w/e.
Furthermore, we know Frieza is targeting Caulifla and Kale, and at their current strength it’d be a total curbstomp. Meaning, the sacrifice of Hit and Cabba’s resolve to protect the last hope of universe 6 would have been for nothing. With that in mind, it at least makes sense for Kale and Caulifla to get some sort of powerup and do something cool before being inevitably rung out themselves. Not only is it otherwise disrespectful to their characters to have them get utterly wrecked tragically for tragedy’s sake, but also Hit and Cabba’s. Fusion is pretty much the least bullshit powerup they could get, honestly.
I suspect that what will happen is, Caulifla tries to learn SSJ3 but can’t quite pull it off. Remembering how Goten and Trunks weren’t able to go SSJ3 separately but could do so when fused, he teaches them the fusion dance. Their fused form can, indeed, go SSJ3, or some Broly-fied equivalent thereof. She most likely fights the inevitable giant Universe 3 fusion robot alongside a weakened Goku. Fusion vs fusion.
So, how do they get eliminated? I have a pretty good idea, and it’s actually really poetic. Frieza shows up, and the inevitably cocky as hell Kefla will be itching to fight him with her newfound power, especially if she learns what he did to Cabba. In fact, she can even put up a decent fight against him...
The problem? She hasn’t broken into her new transformation at all and runs out of stamina fast. Sound familiar? Yeah. It happened to SSJ3 Gotenks, and more importantly, it happened to Frieza, who likely knew from the start this would happen. What better way to showcase his development, as well as advance Caulifla and Kale’s?
Honestly, this is so much more compelling than the two of them just getting curbstomped for angst fuel.
