Recently, a group of 150 academics, activists and writers wrote a letter complaining about ‘cancel culture’. From my observations and understanding, ‘cancel culture’ refers to the criticism of individuals and organizations that do something(s) that is/are problematic. Here are some reasons I’ve seen and heard of as to why ‘cancel culture’ must exist. First, the current ‘cancel culture’ very rarely holds individuals/organizations to account and rarely encourages positive change. There are many prominent individuals and organizations, especially certain high-ranking politicians and media networks, who continually perpetrate and promote human rights abuses with little to no consequences. An obvious example is the current POTUS Donald Trump. Second, ‘cancel culture’ can encourage positive growth. Individuals and organizations that have faced significant and fair criticism have the opportunity to change their problematic behaviors and attitudes. Actor Henry Cavill is one individual who was able to improve himself after being criticized for ignorant comments. Finally, ‘cancel culture’ can lead to horrendous and/or inefficient organizations and individuals losing their power. Milo Yiannopoulos, who who has promoted horrendous ideas, lost most of his power and influence due to the immense criticism he has faced. These are just my thoughts on ‘cancel culture’.
