Voyager rewatch s4 ep2: The Gift
Kes's last episode- even though Kes hasn't been one of my favorites for a long time, it still makes me cry buckets of tears.
The fact that half of Kes's last episode is about Seven of Nine is kind of indicative of how much they didn't care about Kes anymore, but at least the scenes with Seven were character driven stuff that tried to flesh her out more. Jeri Ryan did a great job showing Seven's Borg confidence eroding and her descent into panicking like a trapped rat as she realized Janeway wasn't going to take her back to the Borg. She and Kate Mulgrew played off each other well, with Janeway in full tough love Space Mom mode, which even a Borg would be foolish to underestimate.
I'm glad they didn't try to stick any space anomaly or alien plot into this ep, since it didn't need it at all. One character becoming un-Borged, and another character turning into some sort of magical noncorporeal being is enough drama for any episode, and I wish Star Trek trusted it's audience enough to dispense with those outside peril plots and focus on the character driven drama more often, since the characters are what we care about, and why we watch.
The little moments they give to Kes and her closest friends here aren't explicitly goodbyes, but they end up being little buttons on the end of those relationships- telling the Doctor she'd like to stay and help in sickbay today, because she hasn't seen him much lately and misses him; doing her guided meditations with Tuvok; having a glass of champagne with Neelix, for old times sake- they have a very sweet, kind of sad conversation that shows the deep bond between them, and I wish they'd have let him be kind to her like that when they were a couple, it could have been so much better. All of these are so poignant because the audience and the actors know they're the last, even if the characters don't. They have such a strong sense of family about them, and it just sucks to have Kes have to leave all that behind. They at least made her excited about ascending into some kind of magical being, and tried to spin it as a positive change, but it still hurts to have a character you've gotten to know over a few years be basically shoved aside without much buildup or fanfare.
The scene between Janeway and Kes, when Kes tells her she's leaving, is one of the ones that always makes me cry. When Janeway cries, it always sets me off, but this one had a particular weight to it, since it wasn't just Kes and Janeway saying goodbye in the scenes, it was Jennifer Lien and Kate Mulgrew saying goodbye in real life as well. Their tears are very real, and it hurts, but it's the one scene that provides real closure for Kes's departure. They so beautifully conveyed the mother-daugher relationship that Janeway and Kes have, and the moment when a parent realizes their child is grown up, and grown up right, and is ready to go on their own way. It was a nice counterpoint to Janeway's struggles with Seven of Nine, as Seven childishly lashes out, and tells Janeway how bad she is for forcing her to be human, and not giving her her freedom- meanwhile, at the same time, Janeway is letting Kes have her freedom, and letting her go become whatever she needs to be, even if it takes her away from Voyager. Though Seven can't see it from where she is then, Janeway absolutely does want to give her that freedom, one day when she's ready. Seven, never having known love since the childhood she can't remember, can't grasp that Janeway has just adopted her, just like she did with Kes, and every member of her crew.
As much as I have criticisms about both Kes and Seven of Nine as characters, for various reasons, I still do wish Kes could have stayed, and been allowed to grow beyond a space waif ingenue. I think it actually would have been extremely interesting for Kes and Seven to have gotten to know eachother, considering how opposite they are in almost every way. But four female main characters in one show would have been too revolutionary, I guess. (It never ceases to amaze me that some men still complain about Voyager being 'mostly women', when the majority of the main cast was still men. 6 to 3 isn't even a half and half split!)
It seemed pretty stupid to let Seven have access to any ship systems when she's clearly still bent on going back to the Borg, but I guess they have to make stupid decisions for there to be a plot. After saving Seven's life with her telekinetic powers in the beginning of the episode, Kes uses her powers to stop Seven from contacting the Borg. Then Kes starts phasing in and out of reality, and explosions start happening around her, and she has to leave Voyager for the safety of the crew. Janeway and Tuvok manage to get her off the ship and into a shuttle before she destabilizes the whole ship, and we only get a brief shot of the bridge crew realizing Kes is leaving them for good before it happens. Before she totally dematerializes from our reality, she throws Voyager clear of Borg space, and 10 years closer to home.
From there, we go to the cargo bay, where Seven has had most of her Borg implants removed, and she's standing there looking like a Barbie doll in her high heels, blonde hair, and shiny corseted catsuit. (Which apparently the Doctor designed. Oh my god, literally why?? We already had him creeping on Kes, do we need him creeping on a new young blonde when Kes has barely been gone for a day?! He's just all chipper and pleased with himself about Seven's new Barbie look, and not even a bit sad that Kes is gone forever?! What???) Seven's incredibly dark storyline is so cheapened by objectifying her body so much- this character went through unimaginable horrors in her life, and is only now becoming human enough to realize it, and will soon have to confront that trauma, and yet they're trying to make her into Jessica Rabbit??? It's fucking insulting, my dudes. Put her in a uniform, you sexist pigs!!!
I wish instead of Seven's Barbie reveal, we'd have gotten a scene of the crew gathering to say a farewell toast to Kes, who'd been part of their family for three years, and is suddenly gone forever- that's got to be a big deal, every time they lose someone in such a small crew, and since Kes was a main character, I think the audience deserved that much. But as it is, the only glimpse we get of any of the crew mourning the loss of Kes is a bittersweet shot of Tuvok lighting his meditation lamp for her, and putting it in his window as he looks out at the stars. It's a beautiful shot, as it pulls back from his window until it's a tiny dot on the hull of the ship, as it heads off into the next star system, and the next adventure.
This one is such a mixed bag of emotions for me. I can't really love or hate it, it's a transitional episode that has some amazing moments, but it's very sad, on a lot of levels. I've never been truly satisfied with Kes or Seven's storylines in the show, so I'm always caught up in a lot what ifs and if onlys when watching either of them. I wanted better for both of them, but I know I'll never get it, so I guess I'll always be trying to make peace with the potential we never saw realized.
Tl;dr: An important episode featuring Kes's departure and the start of Seven's journey back to being human. It definitely goes for the jugular in terms of making you feel all kinds of emotions that are not comfortable, but maybe it's better for that. Not perfect, but an important character piece for Kes, Seven, and Janeway.

AOT (SNK) HEADCANONS
What their favorite curse words are or which ones they would use in a modern setting. -Includes the Warriors ofc ^^-
TRIGGER WARNING: you guessed it. Curse words and mentions of slur usage (slurs not included ofc).
Eren (S1-3): he would definitely go with the usual “fuck” and “bitch” but have an unhealthy obsession with words related to balls that everyone hates and makes Mikasa give him dirty looks every time he says one.
“Bro you fucking piece of shit, I swear I will kick you in those fucking hairy bollocks you call a face”
Eren (S4): this man just says the most offensive slurs (unprovoked and with no visible emotions) that make the entire room go QUIET.
Mikasa: doesn’t curse too often, but when she does, she mostly uses some Japanese curse words that she picked up from her mother, such as:
“くそ! (kuzo!)”: meaning “fuck!”
“ちくしょう (chikushō)”: meaning “oh shit”
“わるがき (warugaki)”: meaning “brat”. Mostly used towards Eren when she is annoyed.
Fair to say that she doesn’t shout them, she just says them in a low voice.
Armin: we all know it’s really unlikely that he’ll ever insult anyone during an argument, but for some reason i feel that he enjoys to say things like “holy guacamole!” when he stubs his toe in the couch and stuff like that djdjdjhs
Sasha: loves weird word combinations and long curse words to say at any given moment such as: “what in the mother geewillikers’ bazooka trunk is that?!?”
No one really knows how she comes up with these.
Connie: DEFINITELY uses stinky and ass way too much.
“Hey Connie, yo mama-“
“LISTEN YOU STINKY ASS MOTHE-“
Jean: is the one who actually makes the “yo mama” jokes to Connie ALL the time. He likes to get creative.
“Hey Connie, yo mama so fat that Thanos had to snap twice”
“Hey Connie, yo mama’s forehead so big that she can make a pita out of sourdough bread by giving it a headbutt”
Historia: on a daily basis, she uses refined curse words to refer to the people that she dislikes, such as “bastard”, “miserable”, “wretched” and such, but OH- we all know that when she’s either comfortable or really mad she can say (and probably knows) more curse words than everyone in the troops combined.
Ymir: she just needs cursing to live and most of her sentences consist of phrases with random curse words intertwined into every single one of them. Special mention to “shit” because she likes it a lot and most things that aren’t related to Historia are just “shitty” to her.
“I SWEAR TO GOD REINER YOU SHITTY FUCKING DICKHEAD! STAY AWAY FROM HISTORIA”
Erwin: oh, our good suburban dad Erwin. He really likes “bloody hell” and will throw random dammits at small inconveniences like “staining” his shirt with a little bit of coffee or a pen falling from his desk.
Levi: he will for sure call everyone an “asshole” because he simply thinks everyone is. Period. He doesn’t care who you are. To him, everyone is just a “stupid asshole that doesn’t deserve his time and effort”.
Yes. He learned this word from Kenny. Now cry.
Hange: they absolutely love researching funny and currently unused curse words on the internet just for the laughs. Hange doesn’t really feel the need to curse at everything and everyone, but will randomly throw some of the ones they learned when everyone is angry and cursing to just “get in the mood”.
Ymir: “he’s just shitty, I guess…”
Connie: “JUST SHITTY? HE FUCKING SUCKS ASS”
Hange, passing by: “zooterkins! he sounds like a zounderkite. Did you two know that is the victorian word for idiot?” *laughs and leaves*
Reiner: his favorites were “son of a bitch”, “motherfucker” and “whore”, and he mainly used them to insult fellow men when he was at Paradis. Now that he’s back in Marley, he just doesn’t have the energy/tries to avoid doing it for the kids.
Bertholdt: my good man right here would never insult anyone but himself when he is frustrated (which mostly happens in his mind, of course), but sometimes, when he says these things out loud, they’re like:
“Come on Bertholdt you’re such an idiot!”
“Dumb. I am dumb. Goodbye”. *storms off in tiny anger*
Annie: is definitely beyond basic “rat kid insults” (in her words) like “pussy”, anything to do with balls, “whateverfucker” and randomly saying “fuck” or “shit” in every sentence, so she usually goes with the useful basic when needed:
“Fuck off”. Yep, that is definitely a favorite.
Pieck: definitely knows how to curse properly but chooses not to, so don’t be fooled. She might look soft, and she is. But she has also been on too many missions with too many soldiers and definitely knows way more insults and jargon than you.
She doesn’t really have a favorite one, though. She just enjoys the looks on people’s faces when she lets them know that she understood every single word that they said and that “calling her a “carechimba hija de su puta madre” won’t suffice”.
Yelena: will straight up HEX you in russian and occasionally bring up some slurs💀. I know, I’m sorry Yelena but we all know it’s true ㅠㅠ
Zeke: this man is still -sadly- not over “balls and penis curse words”, so you can imagine for yourself what his common expressions are and how he goes from “ballsack sucker” to whatever sounds like it.
Porco: uses the classical “fuck”, “shit”, “bitch” and so on, but additionally tries to incorporate curse words or even slurs that he doesn’t know how to use or what they mean and their implications, only to be met by Pieck’s stare seconds later; and you guessed it: she usually has to explain to him what they mean and why he shouldn’t be using them.
Falco: will mostly say those weird “filtered bad words” that are children-safe, such as “fudge nuggets!” and “snickerdoodle!”, but you cannot tell me that Gabi hasn’t taught him the actual stuff and he secretly uses “shit” on the internet and some others slip out when he’s playing with his friends and gets mad at Gabi for cheating.
Gabi: knows the entire classic curse word dictionary. Occasionally uses slurs pretending she didn’t know that she couldn’t say them.
One day, she called Falco a “piece of pixelated b*kk*ke” because she heard it somewhere and thought it meant “shit”, so Pieck had to step in and age-appropriately explain that it was something that “bad men did to punish women in Japan and that it was not funny at all”. Gabi never said it again.
Casually picked up “suka” from Yelena because she thought it sounded funny.

I miss villaneve so much that I now just feel sad whenever I think of this show. The show didn’t just end, it died. And honestly, the rot had set it in s3 and s4 was touch and go until it just flatlined right at the end. A few years ago this was my sapphic ship of dreams, I never knew to hope for this. I now just feel empty where there was once hope. Is this grief? Depression? Both? Anyway, my emotional wounds will heal but the finale will always remain what it is and that just fuckin sucks man.
I think KE kinda going to be a “wtf happened” for many years… great cast, promising projection, literally ended in endless “whys”. My answer is literally homophobia and an unwillingness for creative end to see how or why their relationship would work and coast on cool kills to get them good press anndddddd they flopped . And I hope that follows them forever!

I think Konstantin and Irina are not going to make it to Cuba. I believe that’s how the season may open, with them being chased down. Irina be kidnapped and Konstantin needs help and goes to villanelle or Konstantin and Irina split up and he sends her to villanelle. That’s the only way that I can think of Konstantin being relevant in season 4 because yeah we know he’s going to be in s4 lol.
I would love to see that / I like It / I can live with that / It's not bad / I will sue BBC / please god no

skam thoughts
hi ok i’m bored n sick so i’m here to give my (maybe unpopular? idk) thoughts on skam + remakes. i have seen most* remakes, but i’ll mention if i have not seen a particular season or not
first off: basic opinions (favorite remakes, favorite characters, etc)
fav jonas/eva remake:
- skam nl (kes/isa) - isa is, in my opinion, the most relatable eva remake. she’s so sassy and lovable! in general i’m not the biggest fan of the season 1 plot, but i think all jonas/eva pairings, chemistry wise, have been phenomenal. isa/kes are just a little bit more impressive in my opinion.
fav noorhelm remake
- this will be of no shock, as this is quite a popular opinion, but wtfock (senne and zoë). most william remakes kind of suck, and the general character dynamic between noora and william is not something i like. i enjoy the plot but a lot of williams are just...ew. i’m interesting in skam españa interpretation (nora and alejandro) but i can’t fully judge their season until it’s over. zoë is such a wonderful character and senne is actually not a dick! i sobbed when they broke up in s3.
fav evak remake
- i’m tied. either skam france/wtfock. i love the (for some reason controversial) dynamic between sander and robbe. i also love elu, like the basic bitch i am. elliott demaury OWNS me.
fav youssana remake
- honestly, i kind of didn’t like any of them (that are released). there’s only two out there, druck and skam france, and i didn’t like any. i’m sorrryyyy i just love sana bakkoush and no one could ever be better than her. oof! disclaimer i have not watched all of amira’s season/druck s4. i wasn’t personally interested but the acting was phenomenal.
alright now to remake-specific comments.
SKAM, the original, the og, love of my life, scandi legend that started this obsession
- honestly one of the best teen shows i’ve ever seen. the development of characters is so prominent. the acting, for mostly amateur teenagers, is mind blowing. maybe american shows just suck? but i’m absolutely in love with every character. they show such realistic stories and i applaud the skam team + actors for portraying their stories so well.
- the one comment i have is the noorhelm relationship. i just? i don’t like it. when i first watched skam i loved it. noora was hilarious (still think that) and the perfect independent woman model. i also liked william. i just wished they showed more of his vulnerability because his kind of static character is not doing it for me. he doesn’t show any evolution or change. idk, he’s still a wet fish in my eyes. obv this has no shade to the actors, thomas hayes is lovely. his character? not so much. i could write a whole essay on how flawed and dislikable william is.
now, the first remake: skam france
skam france, oui oui baguettes this remake really tickles my fancy
- as someone who kind of understands french, i really do like this remake. i have some issues with s1 and s2 but overall it is a solid remake. being the first, it makes sense for the seasons to seems little unoriginal. i still love emma and manon but their characters aren’t very authentic.
- s3 is where they really nailed it. elu’s immense popularity is only a testament to how truly wonderful the season is. the acting, the characters, slight changes in plot. i loved it. a lot.
- i wasnt impressed by s4 but it might just be my extreme love for iman meskini. no one could ever replace her.
- BUT S5. OH BOY. ROBIN. MY BABY. he is such a good actor and i love arthur he MUST be protected! i love that his shame is not romantically related. also as someone who is interested in deaf culture wow! i’m impressed by the research done by skam france. not only is his the first original season but it is excellently executed. noee is my mother i love her.
druck, likely the most liked remake to which i do not disagree with that statement
- druck is legendary. i really appreciate the small changes in plot and character dynamics that create an identity for each remake and druck is so so good at doing that. mia’s season is lovely and so is matteo’s, as well as the other two. i did not finish amira’s season as wtfock s3 started and i was a little too invested in that haha but i liked what i saw. the mia/noora drama annoyed me but it was okay. i saw it in the way how we all beg for evak/elu/nicotino/etc content in later seasons but then complain when noorhelm/jonas and eva content occur in later seasons, which is weird at best or just fetishization of gay couples at worst. take ur pick. i like it when previous plot lines kind of intertwine into the current ones as it shows that people’s shakes are not temporary and have immense effects on others (which is the point of skam, right?
skam italia, the controversial remake that said bye and then uno-reversed itself (thanks netflix)
- a lot of people don’t like skam italia. it’s understandable, as the actress for sana is not a woc or muslim. however, it is slightly understandable (but not defendable, i was way too disappointed when i found this out) given italy and it’s cultural background. it astonished me that they could even produce an isak remake due to their pretty strong religious beliefs. italy is very much roman catholic, and gay marriage isn’t even legal there (this is the only skam where gay marriage is not legalized). so i give them major props to facing potential backlash in producing s2/marti’s season. it makes sense for there to not be a muslim/woc actress because of the demographics in italy. ww1 and ww2 really spun a number on italy’s race, as many jews and romas as well as pretty much any non-italian ethnicity were kicked out. this creates barriers especially when it comes to hiring a woc actress. skam italia is already breaking barriers when it came to controversial topics (literally all of skam would be controversial in italy’s alt-right view, it seems). tl;dr: kudos for being able to produce a pro-gay show but shame for not being able to hire a woc actess.
- i loved marti’s season as was a fan of the other two seasons. they’re well produced and beautiful and more dramatic than the other skams imo! the soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous.
skam austin, the american cousin no one seems to like that really lives up to the american stereotype
- ok. when i first saw austin/the fact that they made an american remake, i hated it. disgusting. i hâte america as it is. it was cringey, the acting was bad (i’m sorry i’m sorry), and it got rid of the charm that skam had.
- when i watched it a second time around, i changed my mind. i think grace’s season redeemed it a lil bit. it’s living proof that skam remakes must be watched twice or more to fully formulate an opinion. it’s still cringey but i mean, it’s very accurate to american culture. i’m ashamed to say that i, an american, have said many phrases that austin has used.
- skam austin isn’t THAT bad as people make it out to be. i think americans esp are uncomfortable with a skam from their own culture, myself included. and it’s fine to not vibe with it and prefer other skam remakes. i think the actors are okay, better when i saw it the second time, and the editing/music/videography is beautiful (ofc julie andem is a part of it). people give it crap for being american.
skam nl, may she rest in peace or pull an italia and 180 us
- man i was so depressed when i heard that lucas vdh was not getting his season. lucas is downright one of my favorite isak remakes and his story would’ve been so interesting.
- besides that, skam italia has one of the best eva seasons. it is my favorite and is usually a lot of others favorites as well. isa is just so relatable. liv’s season is also incredibly well produced. i didn’t hate noah! it was a miracle come true. he redeemed the william character if only for one remake.
- my one comment/critic isn’t even that serious. it’s just? dutch? it sounds so...weird. i’m a stupid american but i cracked up at things that were definitely NOT jokes because of the language. i’m sorry netherlands/holland i do not mean to laugh.
skam españa, also controversial for good reasons but also conflictingly good
- alright folks. i am confused with skam españa. i don’t know if i love it or like it.
- hear me out. we all know of the controversy with the panphobic comment that nora made. it was stupid and uncalled for and really disrespected the whole pan community of viewers. now, not many people are pan but for a show where an original character (even bech næsheim, love of my life) is canonically pan? it was kind of a slap to the face.
- besides the comment i loved cris’ season. it was refreshing to get an isak season where it was a she, one, and where isak was not living with his eskild but instead had a family. it was also beautifully shot and i love irene with my entire heart.
- that said, i liked eva’s season. nora’s season is interesting. maybe it’s because it’s the first i’ve watched multiple seasons live (españa and france) and have no attention span and is more interested in skam france s5? idk. the clips aren’t really doing it for me. i love the viri clips but the nora clips are eh. she just seems very...in genuine? idk. i also hate miquel get his ugly ass out of here. i can’t fully analyze the season until it’s over but i’m not really interested in it. i also don’t like the noorhelm plot or dynamic at all so that may be it.
wtfock, or another controversial remake that imo shouldn’t be controversial
- wow. i love wtfock. s1 was rocky and i wasn’t sure of how it would be. s2 SLAPPED ME THRU THE ROOF. god i love senne de smet so much. zoë is actually redeemable??? and oh my god milan is my favorite eskild like please adopt me.
- season 3 was the first one i watched live. i arrived to the skam scene late so i didn’t get to experience march madness aka 5 live skams at once and i wish i did. but wow. willem ds and willem h really are one of the main reasons why wtfock s3 did so well. they’re amazing actors with incredibly chemistry.
- the controversy that imo should be controversy: the gay bashing scene. i was surprised at the backlash. people were upset over the fact that they showed such...intense events without immediate remediation. it’s understandable to be mad but? they were criticizing things that had no correlation with the scene, like the willems’ acting or the music picked. it was very wild. they also did a lot of bitching about how lgbt people should see gay bashing because it’ll bring back bad memories and that skam was for the gays only and should cater for only lgbt people. which i heavily disagree with. 1) gay bashing in media is so prevalent and downright important. things can’t be fluffy gay all the time. this happens in real life and does such a great complement to noor’s comment about how no one cares that robbe is gay because it’s 2019. THAT. IS. SO. IMPORTANT. it’s so so important to realize that despite the strides made for lgbt people, gay bashing and violent homophobia. still. exist. also. i would like to direct you to these examples of gay bashing where no one blinked an eye : queer as folk, where s1 justin gets bashed in at his prom and has difficulties drawing; s2 (i think? may be s1) skam españa where lucas rubio gets bashed; skam s4 where even and isak encounter a homophobic dick; these examples are endless. the one thing that miffed me the most was that many critics acted as if they were forced to watch wtfock and therefore criticize its every move. like no? you have a choice? no one is forcing you. quite the opposite! wtfock is geoblocked! you’re actually forcing yourself because you’re taking the time to find illicit resources in order to watch it! alright man i’m done with this rant. many also criticized the writing of the show. it was shaky but watching it a 2nd time, where all clips were released, was so much better when it came to clarity. many ‘poor writing choices’ made sense in the larger picture. again another example that you should watch skam remakes twice to understand the big picture.
- tl;dr wtfock is lovely and should not be criticized for one wrong move.
thank u for hearing me out. i have strong opinions but a frail heart. pls be nice!
