George Cables and John Heard, Los Angeles, 1981.
One of my all-time favorite pianists, George Cables, is a gorgeous traditionalist with outstanding accomplishments as both a sideman and a leader.
There's this tendency in jazz to call any artist older than 60 a 'legend', but even at age 40, George had rightfully earned that honor through his extensive work with some of the greatest players of the late 20th century – people like Woody Shaw, Billy Harper, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper.
No doubt George has always been in demand because of his highly sensitive, swinging, and sometimes downright funky accompaniment. He also brings the entire range of jazz piano history with him, and plenty of the inventiveness that front line players need to keep the fire in their music.
One result of his tenure with so many leaders is his distinguished lyrical style with its often mesmerizing sound and rhythm. Another result is a trunkful of beautiful, memorable compositions that have enjoyed treatments by the leaders above, and many others.
Listen: “I’ve got the best seat in the house, because I can listen and I can play too!”
When George lived in Southern California, I was fortunate to see him regularly in various musical settings, record him at The Lighthouse, interview him for my jazz radio interview series at KCRW-FM, and also be blessed with his extraordinary personal warmth and friendship, which continues to this very day.
You can get an idea of George's eclectic range with just a few clicks. Hear how he lifts alto saxophonist Art Pepper in the high-speed bebop classic 'Cherokee' from 1977. Check George's gorgeous solo work with tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon on 'Tanya' from 1979. You haven't really heard George at all until you hear him with his own ensemble, playing 'I Told You So' from his 1980 album Cables Vision.
Nowadays, George performs the world over with his own Trio, as well as together with a group of companion legends (Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, Donald Harrison, Cecil McBee, Billy Hart, and others) who have named themselves 'The Cookers', in tribute to the classic live 1960s Blue Note album which inspired them. Check out 'Traveling Lady' from 2021. Thankfully, George's work is well recorded and readily available. Find a nice discography here.
Today is George's birthday. Here's wishing you a beautiful birthday George, and so many more to come – your music is really a gift that you give to all of us!

KCRW's 'Greater LA' ending amid staffing shifts, departures
Santa Monica public radio station KCRW will part ways with more than a dozen staffers and end the popular podcast “Greater LA.” KCRW-FM (89.9) host Steve Chiotakis, who created “Greater LA,” announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the final episode of his daily news program would air Thursday, as “management is ending it after nearly 5 years.” “I am so grateful for the time we had, the wonderful…

Jembaa Groove - Susuma - from Berlin, “Ghana’s Highlife going by the heartbeat of 70s Soul Music” (Agogo Records)
Jembaa Groove is a Berlin based Afro-Soul group founded in late 2020 by Yannick Nolting (Bass, Composer, Producer) and Eric Owusu (vocals, percussion, songwriter). They first met fortuitously at a playground in Berlin early 2020 whilst collecting their young sons from kindergarden and soon after realised they were onto something special. Speaking the same musical language, the two musical nomads quickly realized the fruitful outcome of their musical encounter. Digging deep into both their backgrounds and musical identities, they came up with a new and yet authentic vibe ready to be spread across the world. After seeking for the right companions for the upcoming journey and stumbling on a few of Berlin's finest musicians, they finally formed Jembaa Groove, a 7-piece band that combines jazzy sounds from Berlin's uprising underground music scene with traditional West-African sounds from Ghana and Mali, such as Highlife, Adowa and Wassoulou. The music of Jembaa Groove is as much influenced by the soulful rhythms and baritone chords of 70's black America and contemporary artists like Lee Fields and Ikebe Shakedown, as it is by highlife artists such as Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas, with whom Eric has been touring and recording for many years. Garnering a smattering of support from the media world like KEXP, KCRW, Worldwide FM, Rinse FM,WDR Cosmo and enough stations round the world off the back of their "Bassa Bassa" track, Jembaa Groove are causing a storm with their hybrid West African meets US soul & jazz sound. Eric Owusu (Ghana) – Vocals/Percussion Yannick Nolting (Germany) – Bass/Bandleader Moses Yoofee Vester (Germany/Ghana) – Keys Babatunde Agonglo (Benin) – Guitar Nir Sabag (Israel) – Drums Merav Goldman Isreal) – Horn Goncalo Mortagua (Portugal) – Saxlicenseall rights reservedtagsTagsworld afrobeat dance groove Berlin

Short Answer: Because you either break up in the mid-to-early 90s and go down in history as a successful "quirky new wave band" or you keep on going with ever-changing genres until you're a "IDK, AOR/AAA pop?" cult band (before a director of some merit comes and gives you a third fifth? wind).
(Aside: Did any station outside of LA play more than three Boingo songs? Like, they're LA Legends but my BFF from Louisiana knew "Weird Science" and "Dead Man's Party" and that was it until she moved here- and even then it was primarily seasonal/Halloween play.)
Long Answer/Perhaps An Infodump That You Did Not Require: American commercial radio, especially in large markets is/was broken down fairly hard into genres. These stations largely exist to 1) sell ads, and 2) promote current songs by current artists with new albums. Their playlists are often tightly limited, and they don't tend to play "deep cuts" (songs that aren't singles, basically). English language radio in Los Angeles has/had only one long-lasting "alternative rock" station, KROQ, that Sparks fit into well during their peak New Wave period. They weren't guitar-driven enough for Classic/Hard rock station KLOS, and too weird for Top 40 stations like KIIS FM. It might also be partially due to just how fucking prolific Sparks are/were. At their American peak from '81-'86 they released five albums in six years, which —for two guys in their mid-to-late-thirties who were not/never have been into the Columbian marching powder— is nuts. (At their most prolific, Talking Heads' median age was 26 and they put out their first 4 albums in four years. In 1983, Sparks' median age was 36.5 and they put out albums number 10 through 15 in six years. Like I said- nuts.) Most major labels squeeze three singles out of an album. AIMP only got one single, "I Predict", despite putting "...Monster of Love" out very quietly and only in the US. Basically, in the time it would take to stretch out one album's three singles, Sparks had already made another album. And another, and another. So by the time Sparks came back from hiatus with Gratuitous Sax, it was 1994 and there wasn't much room on KROQ for this electronic Oontz-Oontz Music in-between Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sublime, etc. And the stations that DID play Oontz-Oontz Music were like "Dafuq is this? 'Let's Go Surfing'? I'm not playing this." (Or, in the case of stations like KROQ, stuck all their Oontz-Oontz Music into a 2-hour block on Friday nights or whatever. So things off Gratuitous Sax would likely have to fight with "harder" electronic bands like Prodigy, Orbital, Chemical Brothers, et al.) Or it went over well in Milwaukee or whatever, but it's Milwaukee so who fucking cares?
Also because they were not signed to a major American label for Gratuitous Sax (and because Payola never died, it just turned into "gifts" like X-Boxes and premium tequila) they couldn't elbow for promotional airplay like major labels can/could. Now imagine that same scenario playing in markets across the country —New York, Chicago, et al— where they WEREN'T lauded as 'our hometown boys' and given increased airplay because of it.
As Sparks went on and kept defying genre/became even harder to promote with radio play, Devo, Boingo, Talking Heads, et al, had broken up and got frozen in time as 'New Wave' bands that fit perfectly within the confines of a commercial radio playlist. They could be played during an "All 80s Weekend" or popped back into rotation during a lull between releases by top alternative bands. And they were more popular/sold better than Sparks the first time around, so they were go-to hits that kept people from tuning away during ads.
(This isn't even getting into Napster and iTunes and algorithms and streaming and all the other stuff that turned terrestrial radio upside down.)
Gratuitous Infodump: Meanwhile, Sparks was able to thrive in Europe —and on music-heavy National Public Radio stations like KCRW— because of the public broadcasting model. Because that business model comes largely from individual contributions and public financing, they were/are free to play a wider variety of music without trying to sell highly targeted ads to Suburban Males from 18-25 or whatever. So they could play deep cuts, or songs from either/both Kimono and Sparks' new album because they had the freedom to do so in a way that most commercial terrestrial radio DJs (save Jim Ladd, Rodney Bingenheimer, and Steve Jones) couldn't.
Commercially and otherwise, Sparks are literally too weird to live and too rare to die.
TheMoreYouKnow.gif
I don't understand how people keep referencing "quirky new wave music" (oingo boingo, devo, talking heads etc) without mentioning Sparks?? Is it too synth?? Look me in the eye and tell me Kimono My House isn't an absolute vibe
#This is also why I knew Sparks for the longest time as either#The Angst in My Pants guys#Those motherfuckers from KCRW's Bookworm theme song (which I still hate with the burning fire of 100 suns)#or “That band Gary likes so damn much”#we used to have a music industry#be quiet an old hipster is speaking#i'm a part time sparks blog now#sparks band

Becoming a human being isn’t just something you get with your birth, it’s an exercise and it takes your whole life.
The idea we’re given of reading…is that I should sit here and I should be entertained. And the more classical model that has been completely taken away, is the idea of a reader as an amateur musician. An amateur musician sits at a piano, has a piece of music which is the work made by somebody they don’t know, who they probably couldn’t comprehend entirely, and they have to use their skills to play this piece of music. The greater the skill, the greater the gift that you give the artist and that the artist gives you… It takes all kinds of sensitivities…all kinds of different qualities to understand what is going on in that book, not just on the superficial level, its plot and character, but what it believes… And the complexity of that is a real education of the emotions and of the heart; and it’s very hard to get that education elsewhere. Those procedures are vital. They’re really important to becoming a human being. Becoming a human being isn’t just something you get with your birth, it’s an exercise and it takes your whole life.

Greta Van Questions 2.0
I decided to make an update on my Greta Van Questions tag for several reasons: New pictures, new concerts, some questions I want to add and some things have changed along the way.
When did you discover Greta Van Fleet?
I discovered them after they won the Grammy, on February 10. I saw several people talking about them and I asked myself if they were a good band and turned out that they are. One day later, I became a huge fan of them.
Who is your favorite member?
I love them all, but Sam is my favorite member. I remember the first picture I saw of him, and I fell in love with him and I thought: “Gosh, he’s so attractive. He has a beautiful face, beautiful hair and his feet are beautiful indeed”. Sam is also my favorite members because he’s talented, kind and really funny. Sam is quirky and goofy, but in interviews, he’s really eloquent.
What lane have you almost swerved to?
I almost swerved to Josh’s lane after watching the concert in Chile. The red outfit, his radiant smile, and I had lots of dreams about him. Josh is absolutely handsome and I love the kindness he radiates.
What was the first song you listened by them?
It was “Safari Song”. When I listened to it the first time, I was amazed by the first few notes and that song made me become a huge fan of theirs.
Favorite songs?
“Safari Song”, “Flower Power”, “Always There”, “The Cold Wind”, “Highway Tune”, “Watching Over”, “Watch Me”, “The New Day”, “Mountain of the Sun”, “When The Curtain Falls”, the list goes on...
Least favorite songs?
I must say that my least favorite songs are their covers of “Rolling in the Deep” and “A Change Is Gonna Come”. I like these songs but I don’t listen to them that often.
What was your reaction when “Always There” was released?
I got emotional when the song was released (And I cried when the song leaked). As someone who has become a fan this year and had From The Fires and Anthem of the Peaceful Army already released, it was the first song of theirs that I got excited for the release.
Favorite live performances?
Watch Me at Lollapalooza Chile and Merriweather Post (Sam doing the chorus part on his keyboard is AWESOME!), Black Flag Exposition at Poland, Flower Power at KCRW, KROQ, Greta Van Fleet live at ACL (aka The show where Jake gets his hair stuck on his guitar), their entire concert at Lollapalooza Brazil and the Red Rocks concert.
Favorite pictures?
Favorite interviews?
Sam’s interview for 89 FM
Greta Van Fleet: Unedited And Unfiltered
Kerfuffle Interview
NME interview
Sam’s interview for That Boring Show
First and Last
Rig Rundown With Sam and Jake Kiszka
From The Fires or Anthem of The Peaceful Army?
Both. I think that From The Fires and Anthem of the Peaceful Army are special in their own way. I can’t wait for the new album, though. I really wish they could give us a sneak peek about the album but I don’t think they will do that soon.
Have you ever attended a concert?
No, but I will attend their concert in April 25th at Morumbi Stadium! There is also a sad curiosity about this concert: When I read the news that James Hetfield went to rehab, I was really worried that this concert would be postponed and I wouldn’t be able to see the boys (Because they will open for Metallica). Turns out that the dates of their South America concerts weren’t postponed.
Do you own their merch and things that reminds you of them?
Yes! I own both From The Fires and Anthem of the Peaceful Army and their t-shirt (Which is their “A Night of Revelry” t-shirt). I also have a red t-shirt which is reminiscent of Josh’s red outfit, Jake-inspired boots and soon I will own a pair of Birkenstocks.
Tagging: @gretavanqueen, @bigthighsandstupidguys, @gretavanshellie, @dreams-madeof-strawberrylemonade, @wearethemorningbirds, @saywecanart, @stevie-baby, @thebohemianpenguin, @peacelovekiszka, @jeordinevankiszka

Don Couto presenta "Cumbia Binaria Remixes EP"
