Sword Art Online characters as dogs
This is a completely subjective list. It doesn’t have all the SAO characters. You can expand it if you want. If I hate a character, it doesn’t mean that I have anything against that specific kind of dog.
Oh my dog, what am I doing.
Kirito: a mutt. He’s the dog that first comes off in your head when you think “dog”.  He’s a medium/small size, black with white spots and very slim. A mixture of so many breeds that you really can’t distinguish any of them. He could be a good service/rescue dog with appropriate training or a good motivation, but nobody has any expectations on him because he’s not that special.
Asuna: a white Samoyed. A pure and expensive breed with long hair, considered a really pretty dog. She’s also incredibly strong and playful, which could be tied to how Asuna acts when surrounded by friends, far from her family’s grasp. These dogs are related to the snow, so it fits with Asuna’s surname.
Yui: a small robot dog that looks like a Dalmatian with dark bue spots. She really doesn't know how to be a dog, despite her cutting-edge technology. Kirito and Asuna pick her up like a puppy whenever she has to go up or down the stairs.
Agil: a St. Bernard. A huge, strong dog with an affable and loyal personality and considered a good nanny for children. Considering that Agil is the oldest of the group (dude is 30), works in his bar and spends a lot of time around the group of teenagers, I think it’s funny to think that he’s the “dad/caregiver” of all the others.
Klein: a red Shiba Inu. I had trouble with this one, so I thought “orange and Japanese dog” and boom, there he is. Shibas are apparently decent guard dogs so it fits Klein’s need to protect others. Plus, he’s the kind of guy that would spend hours watching memes, especially old ones and we know who’s the ultimate meme dog.
Lisbeth: a chocolate, short-haired Chihuahua. She’s nervous, easy to jump and attack, but a good dog deep down. You may not see her, but she’s always there to hear all the gossips. She’s not everyone’s taste, but you would miss her if she disappeared.
Silica: a cream sable Pomeranian. She’s small, not very strong, loves to have company and she’s more arrogant than she looks. In this AU, Pina is a tamagotchi that Silica takes everywhere.
Kuradeel: a grey Borzoi. A skinny bitch. Bro is glued to Asuna’s window while singing “Didn’t I do it for you?”.
Kayaba: a German Shepherd. The kind of dog you could feel comfortable with while still respecting him. He’s wayy too intelligent and calm. Not much else to say, Kayaba is boring af.
Suguha: a blue mix of Mastiff and Labrador. She’s extremely buff from training, and can be pretty aggressive, but is overall social and close to her loved ones. Her love might be a bit too much for many.
Sugou: a white and lemon Papillon. A posh and slightly smart dog that can’t win any fight due to how fragile he is. The name of this breed also means “butterfly” in French and in this AU, Asuna is capable of tearing him apart with ease, and that makes me happy.  Thanks to @transboykirito for suggesting this one!
Now if I ever want to draw dogs, I have a place to start. An odd place to start. Maybe I shouldn't have discovered Tumblr.

Maple in SAO
You know because Bofuri Season 2 is now coming out I was thinking about the few fanfics I’ve seen of Bofuri SAO crossovers, and about how everyone seems to think Maple would be in any danger in the world of SAO.
Maple became crazy strong due to her unconventional thinking leading to her unknowingly using various game play exploits coded into NewWorld Online, that the Devs had left in the game at the time of release. Not thinking to patch them because surely no sensible person would actually play the game in such a way.
Holes that the Devs didn’t patch until the first event revealed that how the stat system worked (in combination with the various boosts and buffs Maple had managed to get), had allowed Maple to create a character build that was basically invulnerable to physical attacks (and poison).
Something that could be done because the developers still have complete access to the games code, and can change it however they want.
Sword Art Online on the other hand was cut off from all outside influence on it’s launch day. Not to mention the Cardinal System encoded into the game also means that it would more likely than not view any attempt to change the games’ code as attempted cheating.
If there were exploits in SAO that would let Maple create the same character build with the same perks as in NWO, then Maple would have just kept her absolutely broken build from the first two episodes. She just would remain functionally immortal Maple.
Sure Kayaba could probably change the code to nerf Maple into being vulnerable to piercing damage (though the idea that he created SAO alone and had his hands on every minute scrap of code is ridiculous), if he discovered there was an immortal teenage girl wandering around his sandbox, but I honestly don’t know if he would.
Personally I think Kayaba would be too intrigued and amused by what could only be described as a self-made mob to nerf Maple.
I could even almost see Kayaba at one point entertaining the idea of turning Maple into the final boss of the game that had to be defeated. After hearing about her numerous exploits and her gaining such a large number of the unique quest skills/buffs that were scattered around SAO.
Though I don’t think he’d actually go that route, considered he’d planned from the start to be the final boss. After being the hero for the first 95 levels of the game. A kind of great betrayal that the greatest player was really the final boss all along.
[I think he’d entertain the idea of using Maple in his place because it’d essentially be the same thing emotionally, with the added bonus of being completely genuine. Not secretly a developer, or even a beta tester, just a random teenage girl who’d bought the game as her first foray into MMORPGs, who turned out to be the greatest of them all by complete happenstance... Being made the final boss after helping clear level 95. He decided against it because he knew there’d be no way to get Maple to actually play along as the final boss.
Maple would just surrender and die if it meant every other player would get to wake up and go free. That’d be the type of hero she would be at that point if she’d actually been the “Greatest Hero of SAO” up until clearing lvl 95. After years of being the only immortal in a death game, surrendering to her own end to see everyone else go free would be extremely poetic, and make Kayaba seem like even more of a god complex puppet master dick than he already was.]
So no, I don’t think Maple would have been nerfed at all if she and her ridiculous character build managed to happen in SAO instead of NWO. I think Kayaba would have let her run around totally immune to attack damage, and with unlimited Devours on her shield.
I also 100% think Maple would have ended up with a legitimate cult if she was in SAO, rather than her adorable and supportive fan club that she’s got among NWO players.
She’d be the only known immortal in a literal death game (considering Kayaba went out of his way to hide the fact that he was cheating and immortal up until his fight with Kirito). SAO was so crazy there was an entire murder gang running around.
You can’t tell me that in SAO, our sweet Maple, the adorable and immortal devourer of monsters, the flying calamity, wouldn’t have a cult of some sort. Multiple cults even. Because she definitely would.
Humans get weird in times of duress, and you can’t tell me some desperate players wouldn’t look upon Maple as some kind of gift from the divine. Or an agent of evil...
A practically immortal player who gains an in-numeral number of ridiculous power ups and abilities. She’d have to be either sent by the gods to help free them or in league with the devil who’d trapped them in the first place.

So, having just binged my way through SAO season one and Extra Edition, I’ve come to a revelation of sorts.
I’m probably not the first person to think this, and it’s been a long time since I’ve looked into SAO discourse that wasn’t ‘Abridged SAO is better’ (it’s not wrong, but I’m now feeling that the statement’s not giving the original anime enough credit), so stop me if you’ve heard this before.
BUT...
AKIHIKO KAYABA, AKA HEATHCLIFF, IS A GRIFFITH EXPY.
Think about it. They:
-Dream of having a castle that towers above all/in the sky.
-Put many, many lives on the line as sacrifices.
-Remember having the castle dream when they were kids.
-Main colours juxtapose the protagonist (Griffith’s white to Guts’ black, Heathcliff’s red and white to Kirito’s black and blue).
-Get the main character in their parties by wining a duel.
-Use conventional forms of sword combat in opposition to the protagonist’s unusual styles (Griffith’s sabre to Guts’ slab’o’iron, Heathcliff’s sword and shield to Kirito’s duelwielding).
-Have the protagonist’s love interest as their second in command (Casca and Asuna).
It’s just,
How’d it take me that long to realise it?!
(I know why: it’s because I only got into Berserk a few years ago, compared to basically watching SAO day 1 in highschool)

Somewhere in my head there is a little Sword Art Online/Big Hero 6 crossover plot-bunny that occasionally decides to hop up and ask for attention. (Sadly, it never seems to get any bigger or have any idea where it is going.)

You know, out of all the issues I've heard of people having with SAO, and the way it handles its MMOs, I think the most important one that I've never seen is the fact that kirito's (and presumably everyones) skills and abilities are transferable between game that are all based off the root, and that's fucking hilarious, because imagine playing a game in unity and you grind out whatever it is, and then you go to a completely different game in unity, and you still have those skills. literally what the fuck was kayaba thinking.

Since I don't think I've seen anyone else bring it up, can we talk about the fact that SAO had anti-harassment protections? Like, not even touching on the funny thought of Kayaba hunkered down in his mountain shack going, "I can excuse my players killing and robbing each other, but I draw the line at sexual harassment!"
Just... the extra layer it adds to Kirito's hesitancy to open up to Asuna. The way she wants to offer Asuna physical comfort and camaraderie, but can't bring herself to in case either of them have misread the situation and it turns thermonuclear? And the emotional swan dive it took to even attempt to kiss her after the Kuradeel fight?? Like, if that ain't the most clear picture of transbian anxiety, I don't know what is.
this entire thing is *extensively* talked about in the progressive novels, like, "what are even the specific rules?!", because it's not as simple as it seems
and as for why kayaba even put it in?
well it's for the same reason there are in fact some anti-crime systems too, like the cursor colours and the prison system
more coherent than you'd think
(also he didn't actually make it alone, there were other people involved and media coverage of the development, if nothing else it was just covering his ass during development before going mask-off)
anyway yeah kirisuna is lesbians

Note
SAO abridged is has a moment where censoring curse words is acceptable in writing fanfic. Specifically because the Abridged videos censors swear words until the end of the first episode, as Kayaba disables the profanity filter.
HA!
That's great actually!

Trans-Kirito story-idea
After the SAO beta-test, Suguha "borrows" (read, follows her god-given right to be an annoying little sister) Kirito's NervGear.
As Suguha very much doesn't want to run around "as a boy" (yuck), she redoes the body-scan.
Kirito is very much not amused by Suguha stealing his shit, and takes it back. Kirito checks that nothing is actually broken (it works just fine), but doesn't think about "resetting" the body-scan.
The in-game avatar isn't changed (Kirito picks "male"), and Suguha the preteen and Kirito before his growth-spurt have very similar body-types), so any "this feels a bit odd to get used to"-feelings are attributed to Kirito lying about his height.
SAO starts, and Kirito is having zero issues with his avatar.
SAO becomes a death-game and Kayaba makes the mirror-item happen.
The mirror-item uses the recorded body-scan to create the avatar (and a video-feed for recording faces and facial-expressions).
So Kirito now has the body of a preteen girl, and the face of a very cute boy.
Let the chaos begin.
#sword art online#in this setting. kirito is ofc an egg. and asuna thinks that kirito is a very cute girl. which kirito has issues with denying.#klein calling kirito ''cute'' also has some... interesting consequences. probably.#this also has the consequences of kirito probably having a LOT more issues with returning to real-life. bcs dysphoria.#but also like... imagine the hilarity of kayaba realizing that the strongest players in his game are two teenage girls. who are dating.#and he has to come to terms with having beef with a girl who looks like she's like... ten. or something.#silica likely considers kirito a lot more ''cute prince-like girl her own age''#silica being completely innocent about kirito's gender-identity regardless of if kirito is ''out'' or not.#if kirito is still clinging to eggshells? kirito sees silica happily calling her ''oneechan'' and can't break her heart like that.#but like. kirito having a deep voice? cool! not a lot of girls have that! kirito dressing like a boy? also cool! she looks like a prince!#lisbeth cottoning onto kirito's queer-vibes immediately. lisbeth not sure if asuna is a chaser or not. lisbeth tries to stay in her lane.#but lisbeth also has a desire to wrap kirito in chains and throw her into a river. ''you bROKE MY SWORDS''#argo is also likely to end up struggling with ''call me oneechan. fufufu''-feelings popping out of the woodwork.#(even if she won't act on them beyond cracking jokes. the fact that kirito would likely be silica's size? the feelings would come.)#laughing#story ideas#writing#gender
