The way that Kawasemi and yamane are foils to Ron and Toto is so important to me. The way that Kawasemi’s exacting demands and precision-based deductions put a strain on his relationship with his partner is both a lesson to Ron and a what if. What if Ron never was forbidden from being a detective, would he have treated his partner (if he’d found Toto like he did this time) in such a way that it drove the partner behind his capabilities, trying to keep up, and yet doomed to fail because their mental capabilities are on such different levels? What if sometime in the future, Ron takes Toto’s eagerness and loyalty for granted, and loses him forever because Toto feels pressured to stay upbeat and be the perfectly loyal support beam, and not ever let himself be honest with Ron about his struggles.

It’s so sad that yamane felt pushed to the point of committing a crime, and ended up arrested as a result.

Then the next time we see kawasemi he’s a complete shell of himself. He’s making mistakes and struggling so hard to make deductions. Partially because yamane is no longer there to support him, but also because he’s ridden with guilt at the realization that yamane is in jail because of how he treated him. He thought yamane was keeping up just fine, only to learn that the man was a ball of stress and anxiety at even the idea of messing up. And it leads kawasemi to stop using his eagle eyes, and stop using his tweezers.

Kawasemi denied himself to make sure he doesn’t hurt someone the way he did yamane again. Ron recognizes this which is why he showed up dressed like crazy, so that kawasemi can use him safely to satisfy the craving for creating order and perfection. Ron recognizes kawasemi’s needs, because they mirror his own to an extent.

I think it’s part of the reason he’s constantly encouraging Toto and complimenting him, making sure the other knows how appreciated he is. Cause he knows that doing something wrong could lead Toto down an unwanted path. Could drag Toto farther away from him. And Ron wouldn’t be able to bear that, any more than kawasemi could bear to lose yamane.
