Tobirama is an accidental giant to that’s sort of a Senju jokey HC I have for the Senju in that AU. Katsura is 4’10” so mostly everyone is taller than her.

But I got some big girls too and a short king at 5’0” (one of the reasons Katsura is so short, he’s her father)

so funny to me to have to work transphobic early-series katsura into things. ig he has his egg cracked after working for mama saigou. but he does still go on e early early. hes diying hormones. unrelatedly concurrent-and-post-benizakura katsura sliding his conception of himself to the beleagured wife who has to keep her wayward husband in line made easier by the fact that she has always been caretaking takasugi.

ignoring ss for the purposes of this but farewell shins-onwards zura second puberty rereckoning with herself (tags on this post post-me seeing amanto war nostalgia cosplay takazura in SS) real. still. zura keeping them divorced by being #fullmasc zuramp during twitter assassination. real i guess. zura also gets top and bottom removal surgery somewhere in here. maybe when she's on a government salary. anything else about their open-ended development during and post SS. not thought about yet

BUT. all this to say. if put into bfy world and if given decades to grow in a gintoki-less world. i think zura goes evil ojou-san laugh and takasugi finds himself gravitating back towards womanhood in various senses to interface with zura (and to fill the tae hole in the narrative). i think they orient themselves by each other. my beautiful little two-faced coin wives that never stop mirroring each other even when they swap positions.

What is ur favorite HC for ginzura ?!

I don't really know if it can be called a headcanon but I'd say the fact that they understand each other better than anyone else. I think that they have a perfect understanding of one another and know exactly how to act in any given situation when the other is involved. They know each other limit, and know what can set the other off, which explains why, though Gintoki always looks somewhat fed up by Katsura's foolishness, he never gets angry, because Katsura never crosses the limit. And I believe it works the same the other way, Gintoki knows exactly how to deal with Katsura's reactions and know when to stop pretending like he doesn't care about him. As for headcanons in the literal sense, I've never really thought about it, actually!

a few northern thai language resources

@lurkingteapot here is a download link for three articles on northern thai i was able to pull up today and that you may find interesting!

Central Thai and Northern Thai: Linguistic and Attitudinal Study, by Preeya Nokaeo, is a linguistics Ph.D. dissertation from 1989 by a northern thai visiting scholar at UT Austin, which confirmed the aspiration differences at pp. 65-66 (I haven’t read the tone section closely).

Notes on Some Phonological Aspects of Northern Thai, by Makio Katsura, is a 1969 journal article based on a series of interviews conducted from 1964-65. the article characterizes the standard thai mid-class consonants as mid-class in Northern Thai (“Middle Series”), but also notes:

The Middle Series splits into two groups, that is, voiceless unaspirated stops, /p, t, c, k/ and voiced stops plus a glottal stop/constriction […]. The inherent tone of the former is low-rising, thus falling together with the High Series, while that inherent in the latter group is mid-rising or mid-level. The tone inherent in the Low Series falls together with the latter group of the Middle Series, that is, mid-rise or mid-level. (Katsura, 154)

That seems to be the case across each of the four dialects Katsura studied—see kaa ('crow', กา) at p. 157.

i haven’t given it a ton of thought, but if the tone rules are identical i'm not convinced there’s a productive distinction between “voiceless Middle Series” and HC consonants. i also wonder how the findings described here might have changed in the last 60 years.

and on that note—The study of the Northern Thai dialect: Phonetic variations of Sao Wa sub-variant in Chiang Rai province, by Natchanun Sanitdee, is a short paper from april 2023 examining phonetic differences between the Sao Wa sub-subdialect and the standard Chiang Rai subdialect of Northern Thai

unfortunately my biggest resource on tai languages until today has been english-language wikipedia articles and thai-language wiktionary entries, which is *far* from a rigorous academic exercise!! that said, i think it's a decent—and above all, accessible—place to start. if you're interested, what i initially found re pha pan dao/ผาพันดาว/ผาปันดาว is under the cut:

With ผาปันดาว I noticed inconsistent pronunciation of the village's name in 1000 Stars. then the spelling on the sign gave me a hypothesis about different aspiration distinctions, and then i checked that by going to the wikipedia article for Northern Thai Language (which is well-written, if poorly cited) and searching for “aspira--”, followed by checking the thai wiktionary entry for ปัน. that also explains why kam mueang itself is alternately written as คำเมือง and กำเมือง

(also note the distinction between ค and ฅ!! i cannot for the life of me remember where i read the the latter has been reconstructed as a voiced velar fricative in proto-tai, but i think it's noteworthy that its obsolescence in the written language was presumably based on its apparent redundancy in central thai alone)

this multicolored tone chart in the wikipedia article indicates that what we think of mid-class consonants in standard/central thai follow different tone rules in northern thai (at least in chiang mai) based on voicing, with the VL consonants following northern HC rules (low-rising in unmarked live syllables and dead syllables with a short vowel, low in dead syllables with a long vowel).

katsura/zurako (gintama)— another This Is Known type but on god. apart from every time shes literally just crossdressed n when she LITERALLY TRANSITIONED (or, to be fair, that was a wart, but a wart that follows the ambitions of its host (gintama is complicated)) i just remembered during the genderswap arc where they just gave her a bow. thats already a woman!! and also can't forget the movie where she looks like any trans girl you could meet on the street

HONORABLE MENTION i wanted to include her so bad but ran out of room: shun kiseragi from here is greenwood. i haven't met a more openly transgender character still considered their assigned gender since haruhi fujioka. that said im 2 volumes in and i feel like they started very transgender and then pulled it back/reeled it in as a joke.... that's why i'll fight canon for this one i believe she is transgender

First of all, thank you so much for the mail. I haven't gotten mail in years, I just assumed that it was activity, and holy shit, it was mail! I have so many complex and conflicting headcanons. In fact, just for you, I found that rant I started about why I write Takasugi like I do and my personal thoughts on him. But in the meantime, my current strongest headcanon is that Katsura is a sleep cuddler and Takasugi doesn't want none of that shit and Sakamoto's first response when he wakes up next to someone friendly is to get handsy, he doesn't even have to be awake for the process to start, so it was mutually decided that Gintoki has to sleep next to Katsura, and sometimes Gintoki just wakes up with Katsura clinging to his back and a big wet spot where the drool has soaked in, and if he's really awake he'll smack him a few times to try to get him to stop drooling but most of the time he'll just sigh extra loud to make sure the universe knows he didn't ask for this, and then he settles in a little closer and falls back asleep and he's surprised after the war how much he misses it.

...But Katsura misses it significantly more.

Tandemaus is literally just a couple of white mice that randomly ""evolve"" into Maushold after level 25. But the fun thing is that when they evolve they don't even become a new Pokémon, they literally just have babies

So I think Fedya might like them because:

they're mice (he's also a rat)

they're white (a colour symbolizing purity, and he values the pure of heart, see his speech with Katsura and one of his quotes from the bsd game)

they're a family (a very important religious value)

they canonically fuck and have babies (ties into his breeding kink)

I mean it makes sense, right? For thousands of years Utsuro had been hated and feared by humans - and then there's this one human who is utterly, completely devoted to him, who Utsuro is able to banter with as his immortal self and who Utsuro is able to trust with everything. Not even Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi love him like Oboro loves him. And if you had this one and only one person who loves and has ever loved you like that, wouldn't you hate it if anyone else tried to capture their attention? Because they are the only thing that is yours.

Also look haha that possessive jealousy is even canon:

Like can you just imagine in an AU where Utsuro and Shouyou are twins how much Utsuro would hate Shouyou whenever Oboro shows him any attention. Especially cuz Shouyou also has Gintoki, Katsura, Takasugi and the rest of his students - but Utsuro only has Oboro.

Actually I do have an AU idea about that and it's kind of really sad...

But yes, I absolutely hc that Utsuro gets jealous and possessive over Oboro whenever anyone else tries to capture his attention. Utsuro's totally killed people just because of that I bet.

Oh? It’s been so long since I’ve made that post that I’ve fallen out of my appmon phase, but I’m happy to fall back in for awhile to talk about him!

First off, like I said in the tags of the post this person commented on, my oc is more of a headcanon character of sorts, and I have included him in my appmon Gacha meme videos, so if you watch those, you might understand him, but you don’t have to.

Anyway, my oc/hc character is based off Yuujin, and (spoilers if you haven’t finished appmon) his backstory is basically that Hajime and Rei (though Rei does it begrudgingly, only because Hajime, Haru and Hackmon are telling him to) bring back Yuujin by grabbing the last latest version of Yuujin before YJ-14, so probably like, YJ-12 or something. And everyone’s happy bc Yuujin’s back and Haru & Ai are happy.

Though, of course, our revived version of Yuujin, is younger than Yuujin. And because model YJ-14 is stuck and dead in the dark web, they can’t get back those few years of memories back.

I imagine that in the hypothetical second season where revived!Yuujin exists, he would be suffering in the background from all the stress and inconsistencies that came from missing those years. I mean, he suddenly gained a whole new friend group, two of which (plus those not in the know, like Watson) would be a few years older than him. Also, not to mention all of the weird shit that went down during the appmon runtime, like, the appmon. And the fact that he’s an AI. And the fact he died. So, yeah.

I like to think that Yuu(our revived Yuujin) would be living with the Katsura’s, mainly because Rei still doesn’t fully trust him, and they(Rei, Hajime and Hackmon) need to be there in case Yuu’s old Leviathan code kicks back in, so, that’s fun (I will admit that I feel bad for Rei though, cause now he has to deal with being, basically the owner of a orphanage at this point)

And, anyways, after slowly showing the buildup of, everything, on Yuu’s back, he runs away.

Everyone immediately is worried (even Rei, bc by that point, while he might not admit it, Yuu grew on him) and starts looking for him.

They eventually find him, and that’s when Yuu tells them all (or at least, those who found him) that he feels, like he’s not even “Yuujin” anymore. Because, sure, he may look and act like Yuujin, but he doesn’t have those core memories that all his ‘friends’ keep bringing up. He doesn’t even remember meeting them! And it makes him feel, like he’s not “Yuujin.”

That’s when Yuu starts going by “Yuu” or, more specifically, Yuu Katsura (bc yes).

Everyone apologizes for making him feel that way and Yuu comes back. Only, a little different, as he’s now in an even younger body, so instead of being Astora’s age, he now looks like he’s Hajime’s.

Why? (Bc when I first came up with him he was Hajime’s age before I realized it didn’t make sense) bc he wanted to try and get a “fresh start” at being who he decided he wanted to be, and not “Yuujin”

Of course, his identity crisis isn’t over by that point, in fact it had only really just begun, and the rest of his story is Yuu trying to be comfortable in his own skin.

(And when he’s finally getting a hold of himself, Yuujin comes back-)

And yeah, that’s basically Yuu’s backstory. Sorry if that didn’t make much sense, or felt out of order. But yeah, that’s my appmon oc/hc character. I do have an actual appmon oc, being an oc who’s an appmon, and she’s Ai’s buddy! Though I still haven’t figured out her design just yet.
