Wario in 2021 Retrospective

2021 has been a simply wild ride for Wario. After 2020 brought some surprising Wario content, even with the pandemic, 2021 managed to trump that with a ton of stuff to talk about. We even got enough to be able to go month by month:

January:

- Ore Dayo! Wario Dayo! Is confirmed to recieve a french translation.

- Wario-Man and Cannoli are featured in the promo for a facial hair themed spirit board event.

February:

- The Dr. Mario World renders for Wario, Waluigi and Baby Wario finally get a proper release.

- Fronk is featured on the promo for the Hello, Sunshine Spirit Event.

- Wario, complete with Shoulder Charge, is featured on the Grand Slam online tourney promo.

- Mario Golf Super Rush (complete with Wario) and Wario themed items in Animal Crossing New Horizons, are announced.

- A designer that worked on Bomberman GB shared info regarding how Wario got added to the localized release, Wario Blast.

March:

- The heavily Wario inspired indie title Antonball Deluxe, is released on Steam.

- We get a first look at Ninja Hideway from Mario Kart Tour. The Tour ended up being strangely unrelated to Wario, but the course still has Wario elements all over.

April: The only month without anything of note.

May:

- Big Band from Skullgirls recieves Wario themed alt colors.

- A Waluigi themed Switch Pro Controller is announced.

- Wario and Waluigi’s renders for Super Rush are finally revealed and we even got a sudden, additional new Waluigi render, that was casually shown during the Nintendo Mini Switch Lite unboxing.

- Elon Musk dresses up as Wario for a SNL skit. Waluigi and a wiki page mentioning Mona, Jimmy T and Dr Crygor are also there. While very...not good, it is newfound mainstream recognition for the character.

- A second render for Wario in Mario Golf Star Rush, has surfaced.

June:

- Cannoli is featured yet again on a new Spirit Event promo.

- Nintendo's E3 2021 presentation reveals not only Mario Party Superstars, which Wario and Waluigi are naturally part of, but also WarioWare Get It Together!

- Mario Golf Super Rush releases. Not only are Wario and Waluigi major parts of the intro once more, but they also get the most meaty story mode role out of any non-Mii character.

July:

- Nintendo continues to use Wario and Waluigi as the prime characters to promote Super Rush, including a home screen news tab, commenting on their stylin' looks.

August:

- More Get It Together footage finally is released. We also get first news on pre-order bonuses.

- Pyoro is on a new Spirit Board Event promo.

- Wario starts his Twitter take-over of the Super Mario UK account. This one would last for quite some time even after the game launched and also had a retrospective, heavily focusing on the Wario Land series.

- WarioWare pins are revealed to be new My Nintendo rewards.

September:

- New trademarks for Wario and Waluigi's emblems, for merchandise purposes, mysteriously came up.

- Waluigi is on a new Spirit Board Event promo.

- WarioWare Get It Together is released and Nintendo releases a special artwork to celebrate it, a day before launch.

- WarioWare Get It Together recieves a special theme in Tetris 99.

- Nintendo posts new Ko Takeuchi art of Wario, Kat, Ana, Young Cricket, Penny, Ashley, Red, 9-Volt, 18-Volt and 13-Amp, to celebrate GiT's successful launch.

- Nintendo releases a Switch Home Screen news article covering every Switch game to feature Wario so far. Even Wario's Woods on the SNES app get's a mention.

- Following GiT's launch, Nintendo went on to give it regular exposure on their social media accounts, all the way up December. This includes a real and a mock accolades trailer and a 30 Reasons to play the game trailer, voiced by Martinet no less.

- Takaya Imamura of F-Zero fame, posts a picture of Wario he drew on Twitter.

- Dr. Mario 64, in all it's Wario Land 3 glory, is revealed to come to the Switch via the N64 app, as part of the NSO Expansion pack....the excitement would be dampered by a couple things, but seeing the game finally be re-released and so early in the N64 line-up no less, is still big.

October:

- Waluigi recieves a Vampire alt in Mario Kart Tour.

- Mario Party Superstars footage drops, including a series of ads with the japanese idol group King&Prince, even featuring two members of the group playing as Wario and Waluigi and wearing their caps.

- Wario is in the Sora reveal trailer. Minor and easy to miss, but it's more than he usually gets.

- The Shake King and Wario-Man are featured on a new Spirit Board Event promo.

- Mario Party Superstars is released, giving us one more major dose of Wario this year. We even get a never before released Wario render from Mario Party 2, in the games' credits.

November:

- Wario himself is on the promo for the final new Spirit Board event, closing that book on a fitting note.

- A WarioWare Washi Tape Set is added to the My Nintendo rewards.

- WarioWare GiT is revealed to be a nominee at the game awards. It didn't win, but it is a major bit of mainstream recognition.

- Out of nowhere, Nintendo's Youtube accounts release a spanish version of Penny's theme from GiT, that is not in the game proper.

- The final Super Rush update introduces the All-Star Summit course and Wario & Waluigi have a section there.

December:

- WarioWare GIT recieves another Switch Home Screen article, all to itself.

- The author of Dr. Mario-kun releases the spin-off WarioWare manga on his blog to read online, for a limited time. It's been preserved.

- Nintendo releases a Ko Takeuchi christmas themed picture, with Wario, Red, Penny, Orbulon and Spitz.

And that's purely the official stuff, the fandom was no slouch either. To name some major things:

- We got the incredible Wario's Day Off animation

- A WarioWare skin mod for Friday Night Funkin'.

- Wario was released for Render96.

- The powerful Miitopia Switch Mii Maker brought us some really amazing Wario series Miis.

- Wario was featured in a lot of Smash Remix trailers.

- Wario Land 4 Parallel World was released.

- A Kat and Ana mod for Mario Kart Wii is finally being worked on.

- We got some nice WarioWare Gold and Touched sprite rip advancements

And that's on top of mountains of fan work in general. WarioWare obviously got the biggest boost, but Wario Land was no slouch either. This was actually a really good year to be a Shokora fan, given how much fan content she got and even Sal Out, Sarissa and Rudy got some really nice stuff here and there.

On a personal note, this was also a big Wario year for me in general. Thanks to my new laptop, I was finally able to delve into Brawl mods and all their beautiful Wario content and while it's true that I discover new Wario stuff all the time, this year takes the cake:

- I got my hands on lots of spanish Wario marketing material.

- I have found a lot of pre-release Wario Land, Wario's Woods and Mario & Wario stuff.

- I got a lot of Club Nintendo and Nintendo Power scans, which brought things like a in-character Wario World guide and new Wario's Woods art.

- I found out about Wario's car being in Tomodachi Life.

- I now have scans of two of the old Mario & Wario children's books.

And that's on top of other basic Wario media, like a rare WarioWare Touched wallpaper and guide exclusive Wario Land art. Lots of listing off stuff and that’s because there really was that much here in every area.

This year is also where I brought the Wario blog to Twitter as well, to great success (and started a Shokora side-account on top) and where I finally wrote up my Source Gaming Wario article counter, which I am genuinely proud of, especially since I am seeing increasingly more people quote it.

All in all, 2021 was a spectacular Wario year and I hope at least some of that momentum carries into 2022, for his big anniversary.

Kat’s Rat Shopping List

I’ve gotten a few requests for a shopping list of my rat setup (tagging @collapseofthesky because they requested this, specifically, but I’ve had a few others message me), so I thought I’d give it a try and also add a few explanations for why I do some things the way I do. As such, this is going to be a very long post and is therefore under a cut. There will be a basic shopping list without all the explanations at the very end of the post under TL;DR if you don’t care about the rest or whatever.

I had a lot of fun with this and spent way more time on it than I meant to, and might be open to doing more of this kind of thing in the future.

Cage

First up, the cage. Obviously. I’ve said it before but it’s a Double Critter Nation and a Single Critter Nation with the side panels removed and zip tied together. These are sometimes sold in pet stores (the locally owned pet store I prefer has them in stock). I bought mine online because of a really good sale, but you can sometimes get really lucky and find them for resale on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for super cheap. I love this cage because the whole front opens up and that makes it super accessible and easy to clean, decorate, and get to my pets wherever they may be. It’s also huge!

US minimum for rat cages is 2 cubic feet per rat, with a minimum of two rats because rats cannot be housed alone as they are extremely social animals. No, human companionship is not enough, rats need same-age, same-species companionship at all times. Please be aware, as well, that minimums are not the ideal to strive for. Whatever space you intend to dedicate to your rats, fill it! Fill it all up! And if you don’t have enough space for a large cage, don’t get rats. My setup, with the Home Depot/Lowe’s large cement mixing tubs in the bottom, is roughly 45 cubic feet of space. If we’re looking at minimums, this means I could house 22 rats! There’s no way that 22 rats could ever actually be comfortable in my setup. It would be insane, chaotic, and extremely messy. So why would 2 rats be comfortable in 4 cubic feet? They wouldn’t. More space is always better, hard stop.

Also remember that wire cages with bar spacing of no more than an inch for adult rats and no more than half an inch for small or young rats is a must. Tanks are absolutely not recommended for rats due to poor ventilation, which will cause respiratory issues and allow ammonia to build up much faster.

Bedding

This is different from nesting. Yes, it is. Bedding is the substrate used at the bottom of the cage or on shelves to catch errant droppings and urine, and is generally left where it is by the rats because they have no interest in it.

My main bedding is pine wood horse stall pellets. They are as dust free as the alternatives like shavings or paper pellets, and combine the best aspects of both those types of bedding with the ammonia-neutralizing effects of wood shavings and the compact, easy-to-clean nature of pellets. I love them. I also get them super hilariously cheap from Tractor Supply Co, so despite it being a little bit of a drive for me (about an hour round trip) the fact that it’s half the price of the next cheapest option more than makes up for it. I buy a bunch all at once and currently have a few bags left in my trunk because I didn’t have enough closet space for them. It’s great stuff. It crumbles when wet so it helps me keep track of how much and where they’re urinating, and it’s easy to spot clean those areas in between deep cleans.

When choosing a wood, if that’s the route you want to go, remember to check what is safe to use. Pine is only safe when it’s kiln-dried, since it contains fragrant oils that can cause respiratory issues in rats, mice, and hamsters. Some people will advise you to stay away from it entirely, and that’s fine, but since pine is often the cheapest option it’s not always viable. Aspen is a safe wood, but harder to find in pellet form and slightly more expensive as shavings. I use aspen shavings in my litter trays. Cedar wood is NEVER safe, no matter how it’s treated. I don’t think cedar is ever safe no matter what for any animal it’s marketed to, actually. It’ll cause respiratory distress in rats, mice, and hamsters, and guinea pigs and rabbits should never be on shavings regardless though I’m pretty sure they’ll still experience respiratory distress. The oils naturally in the wood are not safe, do not use cedar. Also make sure your bedding is as dust-free as possible, also for respiratory reasons. If you have a small animal, their respiratory system is extremely delicate, and that’s just a fact of pet ownership that you should have learned before getting a pet when you were researching how to care for it.

Since I have two shelves in my cage and they are both shallow to the point of not even having a lip (Critter Nation’s only flaw is the trays that come with the cage), I line my shelves with fleece over an appropriately sized bath mat. Fleece makes a great shelf liner, but I don’t recommend using it in the entire cage because it gets dirty really fast and most rats will chew it up, so you’ll both be changing it every other day and going through it super fast as it is destroyed. However, it makes great shelf liners, especially when very little of the shelf is actually available to the rats like in my setup, where the shelves are mostly covered in other things. Remember that fleece must always be lined with an absorbent layer underneath because the fleece itself allows liquid to pass right through it. That’s the point: the fleece stays relatively clean and dry while the absorbent layer takes all the gross stuff away. Towels are generally not recommended for this because rats can get their nails stuck in the fabric and rip them out, which is painful and distressing for the rat and also you. Anything super absorbent with a really tight weave will do lovely here, hence the low pile bath mats I use. I get them for one or two dollars at Ikea and wash them every week. I keep several around to rotate through. The fleece I use is also a fleece blanket from Ikea for a couple bucks that I cut into four sections because that rendered it the perfect size to tuck around the shelves. This makes my bedding extremely cheap, and that makes me happy because I can spend that money on enrichment instead.

Nesting

This is the material that the rats like to push around, dig in, and sleep in. It’s important to provide soft but preferably absorbent materials for the rats to nest in because it’s enriching, comfortable, and helps them regulate body temperature. Multiple types of nesting are recommended for enrichment purposes. Rats like texture! I use unscented, unlotioned tissues as a main nesting material for within their hides because they’re cheap, safe, absorbent, and soft. I bought 30 boxes of 100 tissues each for super cheap online, but you can also buy dollar store tissues or whatever you have access to. Just make sure they don’t have scents or lotions, because those are not safe for your rats’ delicate respiratory systems. The empty boxes (plastic removed) can also be given for the rats to chew up and play in, or you can save them up to DIY some fun toys later, which is what I’m doing.

I also have two dig boxes, which will also go under the enrichment section. The bins I got for cheap from Target, but obviously you can get bins wherever you want to get bins. Just measure to make sure they fit in your cage properly. The only dig box I want to talk about in this section is the hay box, because the dirt is not actually a nesting material but rather an enriching one. So, hay. My girls love this stuff so much that they drag it all over the cage to shove it into all their sleeping areas. They build actual rat nests in the box, tunnel through it, stash food in it, shred it for fun, and generally spend as much time as possible with the hay. I use oat hay for the seed heads that provide additional enrichment and snacks because the rats have to get to the seeds in order to eat them. If you are feeding a low-quality diet to your rats, do not use oat hay because they’ll fill up on seeds instead of eating their nutritionally-balanced food and that is not good. My rats love their food so much that the seeds are a sometimes snack that I don’t need to regulate because they do it themselves. Any good quality hay will do for a hay box, however, and timothy hay tends to be the cheapest option. Just make sure it’s not super low quality, because low quality hay tends to be dusty. As mentioned previously several times, rats have delicate respiratory systems and dust is bad for them. I buy my hay from Small Pet Select because I like supporting small business, ethical business, and businesses that provide excellent products. They are, however, primarily a rabbit site. I keep hoping they’ll expand the other sections of their shop. Also, make sure your rats aren’t trying to eat the hay. This is highly unlikely because rats are smart and know what’s edible and what isn’t, and hay is not edible for rats. If for some reason your rats are eating hay, do not give them a hay box.

Other nesting options I’ve used in the past include cut up bits of fleece, cut up old clothes you might have lying around, and generally just bits of fabric. Just remember to change out/wash them regularly. Ammonia will build up, and once again that’s bad for your rats’ respiratory systems.

Hides and Hammocks

Rats are prey animals. Surprise! As such, they need plenty of places to hide and feel safe. Rats love small, dark places to rest in. Much like many introverted humans, myself included! Make sure to include plenty of hides all over the cage. Variety is excellent here for enrichment reasons. My rats absolutely love Space Pods! Lixit makes the ones I use, but there’s also a brand called Sputnik that’s basically the same thing. I’ve never seen them in stores, but they’re all over the internet. For rats, make sure you get the large size. Honestly I wish it was larger than it is, but oh well. The girls love it anyway. I kept getting sent only the bottom halves, which is why I have two half space pods in my cage. I got a refund or replacement on both because it’s not what I paid for, but, like… I received the usable half, so I’m gonna use it. The girls don’t like to sleep in them without the covers, but they’ll hang out in there and clean themselves, and they climb through them to get from one spot to another.

In addition to the space pods, I also have various other hides. Lixit also makes a pill-shaped plastic hide that I keep on the shelf over the dirt box. They used to use it a lot more than they do now, and I’m not entirely sure why. Even so, they still use it! I also have a woven grass tent that they enjoy, and a cork log. Neither of those are really for sleeping, but they do hide in them sometimes and generally like to hang out there.

Hammocks are great, and also available in wide variety all over the internet and in stores. My favorite banana hammock was just retired, but I intend to get another. The girls loved it and so did I! Hammocks come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and can pull double duty as both a place to sleep and a way to break up the cage so there aren’t any dead drops where your rats can fall from a height and hurt themselves. Fill your cage with hammocks! All the hammocks! Support small creators by buying homemade hammocks! Learn to make them yourself! They’re cheap and easy! Hammocks are great.

Enrichment Part 1: Levels

Rats are climbers. Rats need vertical space as well as horizontal space. Rats are sometimes clumsy idiots who fall off of things. As such, all vertical space must be filled with all kinds of fall breakers. As mentioned before, hammocks are great for this. So are ladders, bridges, ropes, and that Ikea tie hanger I have strung across the back of my cage. If your rat falls from anywhere in the cage, make sure there’s something to catch them!

Also make sure there’s something to do on all the levels of the cage, even if that thing to do is just get from one level to the next. Rats are dexterous and adventurous. Ramps are boring because they’re easy. If you have sick or injured rats, absolutely use ramps! Accessibility matters! If your rats are of sound body, however, make them work for it. Lava ledges and bird perches make great alternatives to ramps. Screw them into the cage walls and watch your rats hop around! They love it. Ladders are also fun, especially if they’re not used the way ladders are meant to be used. Suspend them from things, put them at weird angles, just make sure they’re secure. I get a lot of my levels from the bird aisle at the pet store (or virtual pet store). Be aware that sometimes your rats are going to prefer to climb directly on the bars of the cage. That’s normal! The bars are there, so the rats will climb them. That’s all there is to it!

Climbing frames like the wooden wine rack from Ikea that I have in the bottom of my cage are also good to have. My girls love it, and it does double duty as a chew toy.

Enrichment Part 2: Chewing

Contrary to popular belief and old science, rats do not actually require chews to keep their teeth trimmed. Rats trim their own teeth by bruxing, or grinding their teeth together. This does not, however, negate the need for chews. Rats like to chew! What your rat likes to chew best is entirely subjective. Some rats love wood and sticks, some rats will always chew fabric over anything else, some rats will never chew fabric. Every rat is different! Try as much variety as you can and keep stocked up on the things your rats like best. My rats really like woven grass, and I try to keep at least a couple different kinds around for them. I keep a grass mat on a shelf that they like to pull apart, and the woven grass tent will likely have a short lifespan, as well. There’s a woven grass tunnel thing that they’ve put into the dirt box and are slowly but systematically shredding. My girls also like willow sticks, so I’ve got a couple hanging toys of willow that are very slowly being chewed because there’s so much else to chew. The wooden bridges see a fair bit of chewing, and even the lava ledges get chewed on the edges. My girls also love destroying rattan and wicker balls. I bought a bunch of them for cheap and toss a new one in there about every week or so. They love them. I also got a couple things from Small Pet Select like a pine cone, a bit of natural loofah, and a dried okra pod. So far the okra pod has seen the most action and is shredded halfway to infinity. I think they like that it has seeds inside, but the others get chewed sometimes, too. There’s enough variety in my setup that everything lasts a decently long time. Except the rattan balls.

Enrichment Part 3: Digging

As much as rats like to climb, they also like to dig. That’s why it’s highly recommended to have a dig box. Safe substrate is important here. If you’re going with potting soil, make sure it’s just dirt and doesn’t contain any fertilizer. Personally, I found potting soil to be kind of annoying a little expensive. I prefer coconut soil. I use Exo Terra terrarium soil, which is sold in compacted blocks that you have to hydrate. I use two thirds of the recommended water because my rats don’t need humidity. I use three blocks per dig box, and replace the soil every month because the girls will do their business in it sometimes, leave food in it, leave bits of tissue or hay or various shredded chews. Basically, the dirt gets dirty in bad ways and needs to be replaced sometimes. It can also grow things if left too long because of the humidity (which will be a problem regardless of the type of substrate being used). So every deep clean, both dig boxes get emptied, wiped out, and refilled.

The hay box gets an honorable mention here, since it pulls double duty as both nesting and digging. Triple duty, really, since it’s also a forage toy.

Enrichment Part 4: Misc

Yeah, I didn’t know what category to put this under, so here we are. Litter boxes! No, seriously, this counts as enrichment. Training your rats, whether it’s to do tricks or just poop where you want them to, counts as enrichment. Rats are incredibly smart! They’re at least as trainable as the average dog, especially if they come from an ethical breeder who breeds for health and temperament (let me just slide a reminder not to buy live animals from pet stores that source from highly unethical breeding mills in right here; please support ethical breeders and rescues), and will happily take to any training. Remember that positive reinforcement is the only ethical way to train an animal. Treats are great for this, and your pet will love you even more because every living thing loves food. My rats actually didn’t require much training for their litter trays. Make sure that whatever you’re lining the litter trays with is not the same as their normal bedding. If you’re using aspen shavings in the main cage, use pine in the litter trays, or literally any distinct safe bedding. I use shavings in my litter trays and pellets in my main cage. This helps the rats distinguish the litter trays from the rest of the cage and makes it easier to identify where to do their business versus where not to do so. When you first put the litter trays in, just go in at least once a day and toss any poops you see into the tray. If you see your rats using the litter tray, offer a treat while they’re doing so. Rats are extremely clean animals and they like their mess contained as much as you do. It would not be possible for me to only deep clean once a month if I didn’t have litter trays that I clean out about twice a week (or more, if necessary) to get rid of the majority of the mess and smell. I’d be deep cleaning every two weeks at least without them, so the litter trays are a great investment overall. Your rats will never be perfect about using them, because they’re still rats, but they’ll help a great deal.

Also under this section are forage toys! Do not feed your rats from a simple bowl, it’s boring and encourages stashing, which means you’ll never know when they’ve actually run out of food because they’re just going to pick it up and take it somewhere else and have a great big hoard that you’ll find on deep clean day. You can definitely scatter feed, that’s enriching as well because it makes the rats go looking for their food, but forage toys are the ultimate way to feed your rats, I think. I mostly don’t get my forage toys from the small animal aisle. I do have one that’s small animal specific, a little ball that they roll around the get the food out. I also have some marketed for cats, and some marketed for birds. Having multiple kinds is really helpful. I’ve also noticed that while some stashing still occurs, it’s greatly reduced. I refill the toys as they empty and everyone’s happy.

Food/Water

What you feed your rats is extremely important, obviously. Many commercially available pellet foods marketed for rats are actually extremely not good for rats. The same is true cat and dog food. It is a sad fact that the companies that make these foods tend to be far more interested in their bottom line than the health of your pet. As such, do your research! Always do your research! Know what’s in the food and what your animal should be eating, and try to match those two things up as closely as possible. In the UK rat owners typically will avoid pellet foods and prefer homemade mixes for these reasons, but making your own mix is not always feasible and can be tricky if you don’t know what you’re doing. Most US rat owners tend toward pellets because it’s a lot harder to mess up the balance of nutrients when it’s done for you. Also, the UK does not have Oxbow, which is one of the most popular brands of healthy rat food. It’s the brand that I use, and my rats adore it. Mazuri is another popular and healthy option, but my rats prefer Oxbow over anything else. I kind of want to try making my own mix at some point, but I’m not sure I ever will. Like with most of my rat supplies, I buy food in bulk because it’s cheaper. A 20 lb bag of Oxbow Essentials Adult Rat food runs me about 40 bucks. Be careful to buy adult rat food, even for baby rats, because any food that says Young Rat and Mouse is not going to have the appropriate balance of fat and protein even for young rats. Adult food will do just fine for babies, too. If you want to add some extra protein to their diet, try a boiled egg or bits of meat every now and then, but it’s probably not necessary as long as they’re getting enough food and some extra fruits and veggies now and then. If you want to try making a mix, do so much research before you try it, and make sure your ingredients are good quality.

Rats should also receive other foods in addition to their pellet or main food. Rats are omnivores and love fresh veggies, fruits, milk, eggs, and meat! Make sure you research safe foods before giving them to your rats, as not everything is safe. If you adopt your rats from an ethical breeder, they should have resources available to you on what’s safe and healthy. If you rescue, you can still reach out to established ethical breeders for tips and tricks, or find lists online as you do your research. Some veggies are only safe cooked, some parts of certain plants are unsafe while others are safe, and some foods are only safe for males or females but not the other sex (citrus and mango are the ones I remember that fall into that category). Just do your research and try to keep processed foods away from your rats. Sodium is also not good for them. Any raw meat or fish should be frozen and then thawed before being fed to your rats to kill any potential contaminants. Like always, do your research first!

Rats obviously require water, as well. Water bottles tend to be the most widely accepted way to give rats water, because they don’t evaporate and are easy to keep clean. I, however, have a terrible time with bottles, and they always leak or break. Thus, I have opted for water bowls instead. The girls love them more than the bottles I’ve used in the past, and they’re a little more enriching, as well. The only downside is that I have to wash them out daily. But since I spot clean daily anyway, I don’t mind at all.

First Aid Kit

Any responsible pet owner should always keep a first aid kit around, no matter what kind of pet they have. Pet owners who have particularly vulnerable pets should especially be careful to make sure they have a well-stocked first aid kit. This should include single-use sterile syringes without needles, gauze pads, vet wrap, infant/toddler ibuprofen or acetaminophen, medical tape, cat nail trimmers, and probiotic powder like Benebac. But most importantly, it should include the phone number and location of a vet that will see and treat rats. Have a vet picked out that you have confirmed will see and treat your pets BEFORE getting pets. If an emergency arises and you’re suddenly scrambling for a vet last second, not only do you waste precious time getting your pet the help they need but you may find out too late that the nearest rat-friendly vet is too far away. That means your pet will suffer unnecessarily and you are an irresponsible pet owner. Hard stop. If there is no vet within reach that will see rats, do not get rats. Rats will require a vet trip at least once in their lives, since all rats are extremely prone to respiratory illness. Sometimes this happens for no reason at all, because all rats possess a bacteria in their respiratory systems called mycoplasma. There’s no way to get rid of it and nothing you can do about it except make sure your rats live in a clean, well-ventilated environment with safe bedding and materials. Even with all this, sometimes your rats will get sick. That’s normal! Just make sure you can take care of them when it happens. As such, make sure you have a vet fund at all times of at least a couple hundred dollars, in addition to a well-stocked first aid kit and the name and location of an appropriate vet.

It’s also beneficial and enriching to syringe train your rats. What this means is putting a liquid treat like baby food, yogurt, or apple sauce into a syringe and giving it to your rats. This teaches the rats that the syringe is a good thing so that if you ever need to give them medicine from the syringe (rat medicine tends to be oral and dissolved in a liquid solution, so those needle-less syringes will be necessary) they’re more likely to take the medicine with minimum complaints.

Storage

Maybe it goes without saying, but you also need places to put all of the things for your rats. Keep your first aid kit in a box to itself so you always know where it is, and organize your supplies appropriately. I really like Ikea bins for my bedding and food and other dry bulk items, and I keep a lot of my smaller stuff on a shelf at the foot of my bed. Work with the space you have, and plan appropriately.

And thus concludes this extremely long explanation of the bare basics of healthy rat living. Really, this is the bare basics and not even remotely comprehensive of the options available. Be creative when shopping, and definitely look outside of the small animal aisle at your local pet store because it will not contain anywhere near all of what you need.

-Ceramic (and therefore tip-proof) water bowls, and/or bowls that can be attached to the cage

A final note before the end: Always remember to do your research before getting pets, do not get pets if you cannot provide a good life for them with MORE THAN the bare minimum requirements for safe and healthy pets, do not buy live animals from pet stores unless it’s part of a rescue program, don’t take the word of just one person as law, don’t be afraid to ask questions respectfully, and always seek new ways to improve your pet care. Absolutely.

I also accept “demonization” for like--comedic purposes. For example, if they had Alya be all in on the love square and all no Marinette you’re not allowed to give up on Adrien if it’s Lukanette endgame and Alya’s (and possibly the rest of the girl squad) “demonization” is for the sake of their dramatic reactions to the mere idea that Marinette would be both not into Adrien anymore and also into someone else.

I just think the idea of turning things on its head by making the people around Marinette the subject of jokes instead of it being Marinette herself.

Do you mean it’d be better because love square is endgame so it’d be messy? Because otherwise, not gonna lie, Jagged meddling and being super supportive sounds fun. :P I’m not here for love square meddling but Lukanette meddling is cute because both parties would be mutually aware of it and also be into it.

As for my favorite fic I’ve written? That’s probably too tough to answer, ahaha. For sure, it’s something Lukanette-based, but I know that doesn’t narrow it down much at all. It would also probably be one of my fix-its/canon divergences because I’m crazy for multiverse/alternate timeline stuff (I hate time travel, but I’m all about multiverse, I adore that stuff).

Yeah, I have that ship blacklisted (so I don’t see it around) but not really out of hatred for it; I tend to blacklist names/people/ships that I’m either indifferent to or don’t like (I immediately blacklist people who write angst, people who cross tag, and people who do onesided-Lukanette and don’t tag it that, even if it’s just one offense; I don’t play games, lol, if anyone does something I don’t like, I filter it out because I filter everything).

İlk olarak 9 adet 2D animasyon programı, ikinci olarak 9 adet 3D animasyon programı ve son olarak 8 adet joker animasyon programı tavsiyelerinde bulunduk. Konunun en sonunda ise derlemiş olduğumuz 26 adet animasyon hazırlama programının toplu listesini verdik. Sadece whiteboard animasyon programı arayan tasarımcılar En Başarılı 10 Whiteboard Animasyon Programı konumuza göz atabilirler.

2D Animasyon Programları

Video tasarımcıları ve düzenleyicileri en çok 2d animasyon programları arayışına girmektedir. Çok sayıda ücretsiz 2d animasyon programları olmakla birlikte azımsanmayacak derecede ücretli 2d animasyon programları da bulunmaktadır. Profesyonel kişiler ilk sıralarda bulunan programları kullanabilir. Yeni başlayanlar için animasyon programları ise son sıralarda yerini almıştır.

Cartoon Animator 4

Sistem: Windows ve macOS En etkileyici ve kullanımı en kolay 2d animasyon programı listesinin ilk sırasına cartoon animator 4'ü koyuyoruz. Sıfırdan bir çizgi film yapmayı düşünmüyorsanız, temel özellikleri kullanıp aklınızdaki düşünceyi animasyona çevirmek istiyorsanız CA4 ihtiyaçlarınızı karşılayabilir. Toon Boom Harmony & Storyboard 7

Sistem: Windows, Linux ve macOS Toon boom firması tarafından piyasaya ayrı ayrı sürülen Harmony ve Storyboard 7 pro programları entegreli çalışabilmektedir. Bazı animasyon stüdyoları tarafından kullanılan TB Harmony programı 2d animasyon programı kategorisinde yer almaktadır. Palet ve boyama araçlarının başarılı olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Harmony'nin bir diğer güzel özelliği ise kullanmak istediğiniz 3d görselli import ettiğinizde iki boyuta düşürüyor. Sanal gerçeklik veya oyun ortamlarıyla ilgili başarılı sonuçlar elde edilebiliyor. Storyboard 7 pro ise aslında Toon Boom'un kanayan yarasıdır. Harmony'i bilenler "storyboarda ayrıca gerek yok" diyerek yüzüne bile bakmıyor. Biz hiç öyle düşünmüyoruz. Esasen SB7 3d animasyon programı kategorisine girebilir. Çünkü içerisine 3D ögeler import edilebiliyor ve üç boyutlu sahneler oluşturularak import edilen üç boyutlu nesneler kullanılabiliyor. Ayrıca muhteşem ikili olarak nitelendirdiğimiz TBH & SB7 entegreli çalışabiliyor. Harmony ile 2 boyutlu tasarımlar yaptıktan sonra SB7'ye aktararak tek dosya üzerinde çalışmalarınıza devam edebiliyorsunuz. Birden fazla hazır efektleri bulunuyor. Üç boyutlu dahili kamera özelliği gayet başarılı. Denemenizi tavsiye ederiz. Maskot ve karakterleri kolaylıkla hareket ettirebiliyor ve senaryolara uygun animasyonlar oluşturabiliyorsunuz. Programın asıl dayanağı ise kare kare fotoğrafların uç uca eklenerek animasyona dönüşmesi. Bitmap dolgu aracı ise gerçekten çok başarılı oluşturulmuş. Kullanacağınız efektlerin ses efektleri de bulunuyor. Belki de moho'nun en güzel özelliği budur. Diğer animasyon programlarında efekt kullandıktan sonra ses efekti arar arar dururuz. Moho'nun harika bir özelliği daha bulunuyor. Karaktere seslendirme dosyası yüklendiği zaman, dudak hareketleri otomatik olarak oluşturuluyor. Debut ve debut pro arasında 8 kat fiyat farkı bulunuyor. Türkiye'de stop motion animasyon videolar çok ilgi görmektedir. Her yaşa hitap etmesi ve 3d animasyonlara oranla daha kolay hazırlanması artı özellikleridir. Program içerisinde yüzlerce ses efektleri bulunuyor. Kamera ile çekim yapabiliyorsunuz fakat sadece kamera ile çekim yapacaksanız çok verim alamayabilirsiniz. Çizgi film yapmak için yeterli bir animasyon programı olmayabilir ancak basit videolar yapmak için ilaç olabilir. Bazen ihtiyacınız olan video çok basit olabilir. Yapılabilecek videolar oldukça kısıtlı hale geliyor. Websitelerinde 3d animasyon programı olarak kendilerine slogan biçmiş olsalar da bahsettikleri 3d, üç boyut anlamına gelmiyor. Çünkü program tamamen iki boyutlu animasyon programıdır. 3d hiç bir nesne import edilemiyor veya outpot yapılamıyor. FlipPad ile çalışılması durumunda ortaya güzel görüntüler çıkartılabilir. FlipPad ise digicel'in karakalem çalışması için oluşturduğu program denilebilir. FlipPad ile karakter çalışması yapıp, FlipBook'a atıp renklendirilebilir.

Synfig Studio

Sistemler: Windows, Linux ve macOS Synfig 2d animasyon programı belki de boyutuna göre en detaylı program diyebiliriz. Sadece iki boyutlu işlemlerin yapılabildiği animation program, vektör bazlı çalışmaları desteklemektedir. Vektör bazlı nesneleri import edebilen synfig, katmanlar ve filtre özellikleri içermektedir. Bitmap görüntüler ile karakter kemiklerini birbirine eklem şeklinde bağlama özelliği oldukça başarılı. Birçok gelişmiş kontroller, opaklık ayarlama gibi transform ayarlamaları yapabiliyorsunuz. Programın kullanılabilmesi için en az 2GB RAM'e sahip olmanız gerekiyor. Hem ücretsiz oluşu hem açık kaynak kodlu oluşu sebebiyle orta seviye tasarımcıların yüksek lisans programı şeklinde düşünebiliriz. Synfig'den sonra Joker Animasyon Programları listesine veya 3D Animasyon Programları listesine geçebilirler.

3D Animasyon Programları

Ücretsiz 3d animasyon programları piyasada pek bulunmuyor. Üç boyutlu animasyon programları genellikle ücretlidir ve lisans gerektirir. Tasarım işlerini profesyonel anlamda gerçekleştirenler aşağıda bulunan listeyi inceleyerek kendilerine en uygun olanı seçip kullanabilirler. Listeyi yaparken en iyiden en kötüye doğru yapmaya çalıştık. Tabiki her 3d animasyon programı iyidir fakat en kullanışlılarını üst sıralaya eklemeye gayret gösterdik.

Sistemler: Windows, Linux, macOS, Android ve iOS Dijital dünyanın devlerinden birisi olan Adobe firması Premiere Pro en iyi video animasyon programlarından biridir. Oldukça kapsamlı ve istediğiniz tüm senaryoları ekrana dökebileceğiniz eşsiz özelliklere sahiptir. Animasyon firmalarının birçoğu premiere pro kullanmaktadır. İster animasyon yapma işlerinizde ister video düzenleme işlerinizde partner olarak kendinize bu programı seçebilirsiniz. Özelliklerinin bir hayli çok olması kullanım zorluğunu da beraberinde getirmektedir. Programı kullanabilmek için eğitim almanız şart. Diğer birçok adobe ürünü ile entegre edilebilen APP adından da anlaşılacağı gibi ücretlidir. Hem 3d hem 2d animasyon programı olarak pastada büyük dilim sahibidir. Kendisini rakip programlardan ayıran en büyük özellik 8K çözünürlük kalitesini desteklemesidir. Adobe'nin photoshop, audition, stock ve after effects gibi ürünleriyle entegreli çalışabilir olması tercih sebepleri arasındadır. Örneğin after effects ile hareketli bir animasyon oluşturup, audition ile ses montajı yapıp stock üzerinden özelleştirilebilir ve premiere pro'ya aktarılabilir. Bir taşla 4 kuş vurulmuş olur. Tasarım işinde her şeyi düşünmüş. Adobe Rush ile video düzenlemesi yaptığınız aygıtlar üzerinde eş zamanlı çalışma olanağı sunmaktadır. Aylık ortalama 20$ civarında bir fiyatı var.

Autodesk Maya

Sistemler: Windows, Linux ve macOS Çizim programları ile tanınan Autodesk firması tarafından geliştirilen Maya programı tam bir video canavarı. Özellikle 3d animasyona odaklanmış ve sunduğu çözüm önerileri harika. Mimari modelleme dışında tam bir animasyon programı diyebiliriz. Autodesk bizlere bir program vermiş ve sınırlarını çizmemiş. Sınırlarınız hayal gücünüzdür demiş. Bize de kullanmak ve yapımcılarını tebrik etmek düşer. Ne yazık ki Maya ücretlidir. 30 gün deneme sürümünü kullanarak satın alıp almayacağına karar verebilirsiniz. Sistem gereksinimleri oldukça fazla. Ağır bir program olduğu için kurmadan önce gereksinimleri karşılayıp karşılayamadığınızı kontrol etmelisiniz. Maya'nın artı yanlarından birisi hazır efektlerin bolluğu olsa gerek. Örneğin animasyon yaparken bir gemiyi patlatmaya çalıştığınızı düşünelim. Bunun için hazır ateşli patlama efektleri bulunuyor. İşinizi hızlıca çözüyorsunuz. Ayrıca animasyon karakterleri üzerinde çok çalışmışlar. Animasyon programı karakterlere elbette duyarlı olmalı fakat Maya bunu biraz abartmış. Oluşturduğunuz maskot veya karakterin saç tellerini dahi gerçeğe yakın belirleyebiliyorsunuz. Voxel özelliği ile karakteri çok çabuk oluşturabiliyorsunuz. Yıllık ortalama 2.500$ civarında bir fiyatı var.

Adobe After Effects

Sistemler: Windows, Linux ve macOS Hemen hemen her tasarımcının yolu bir şekilde adobe after effects ile kesişmiştir. Filmlerin, animasyonların, introların ve video dünyasının yaşlı kurtlarındandır. After effects ile neler yapabiliriz şeklinde bir soru sorarsanız cevabımız "her şey" olacaktır. Yine hayal gücünüzle sınırlı bir animasyon programı. Video kesme işlemi de efekt verme işlemi de oldukça basit. Bilgisayarınızda güç isteyen nadide bir üründür. Özellikle ciddi şekilde RAM takviyesi gerektirebilir. Sanal stüdyo özelliği (yeşil ekran/green screen) oldukça başarılı. Avatar filminin belirli sahneleri after effects ve maya ile yapıldı. Tabi programların dışında bir çok teknolojik sensörler kullanıldı. Video montajı sırasında ses montajı da yapabiliyorsunuz. Bu sektörün mercedes'i diyebiliriz. Emektar programlar arasında yerini alır diye düşünüyoruz. Maya programından yaklaşık 8 yıl önce piyasaya sürülmüştü. Autodesk firmasının 8 yıllık animasyon ve modelleme deneyimin ardından 3ds max'i kaldırmadılar ama Maya'yı çıkartmışlardı. Hala kullanan tasarımcılar var. Ama bize sorarsanız, tasarımcılarımız Maya varken 3ds'yi tercih etmiyorlar. Kimisi önceden kullandığı için hala 3ds kullanmaya devam ediyor. 3ds ile neler mi yapılabilir? Neler yapılmaz ki..

NeoGeo Blender

Sistemler: Windows, Linux ve macOS Blender 1998 yılında Hollanda'da Neogeo şirketi tarafından piyasaya sürüldü. Günümüze kadar kendini geliştirmeyi başardı ve şu anda oldukça popüler şekilde hayatına devam ediyor. Tercih edilmesinin ilk nedeni kullanımının diğer programlara göre daha kolay oluşudur. Bu kolaylıklarla beraber bazı işlemleri basitçe yapabilme olanağı da tanıyor. Örneğin after effects'te opaklık ayarı yapmak için Transform özelliklerini açıp Opacity değerini düşürmemiz gerekirken, Blender animasyon programı için direkt olarak sağ panelde Opacity ayarı bulunabiliyor. Tabi görünümü kişiselleştirebiliyorsunuz. En çok kullandığınız araçları ekrana sabitleyebiliyor ve işlemlerinizi hızlandırabiliyorsunuz. Tasarım anlamında yeni yeni profesyonelleşiyorsanız Blender önerebiliriz ama tasarımcılarımızın tercih ettiği programlar arasında yer almıyor.

Maxon Cinema 4D

Sistemler: Windows, Linux ve macOS Adında 4D olmasına bakmayın, bildiğimiz üç boyutlu 3d animasyon programıdır. Ülkemizde yaygın olarak tercih edilen bir animasyon programı değildir. Daha çok Adobe ve Autodesk ürünleri tercih ediliyor fakat kullanıcısı yok değil. Tasarımcılar cinema 4d programlarının bazı özelliklerini kendilerine daha yakın buluyorsa kullanabilirler. Her yiğidin yoğurt yiyişi farklı olduğu gibi her tasarımcının da teknikleri farklıdır. Kendilerine has görünümler oluştururlar ve çizimler yaparlar. Tanitimvideosu.com olarak kullanmıyoruz fakat merakımızdan açıp kurcalamışlığımız çok olmuştur. Piyasada eğitim setlerini rahatlıkla bulabilirsiniz fakat çok kapsamlı eğitimleri Türkçe dilinde bulmanız bir hayli zor. İngilizce bilmeniz sizi bir adım öne çıkartacaktır. Çünkü İngilizce kaynaklar çok fazla sayıda var.

Vegas Pro

Sistemler: Windows ve macOS Vegas pro'nun tarihi biraz sancılı. Önce sonic firması tarafından piyasaya sürüldü. Daha sonra sony bünyesine geçti. Aslında en çok sony firmasına geçtiğinde program meşhur oldu. Şimdi ise Magix firması tarafından yayınlanıyor. Sık sık güncellemeler de yapılıyor. 450 $ gibi bir fiyatı var. Vegas pro kullananların çoğu başka bir programa ihtiyaç duyarlar. Vegas pro kullanan bir çok tasarımcı arkadaşlarımızdan aldığımız bilgilere göre; borix fx yazılımını ayrıca alırsanız bir anlam kazanıyor. Tek başına diğer programlardan hiç bir farkı yok ve tercih edilmesi için bir neden bulunmuyor. Hazır 3d nesneler koyarak tasarımcıları kendilerine çekmeye çalışmışlar. Ülkemizde bunu başaramadılar fakat dünya genelinde ne kadar başarılı oldukları tartışma konusu olabilir. Sonuçta animasyon programı olarak her zaman listede yerini alacaktır. Yaklaşık 13 yıl sony firması tarafından yönetildiyse, mutlaka tercih edilesi bir yanı vardır da ülkemizde bilen yoktur.

Final Cut Pro X

Sistemler: macOS Apple tarafından yapılan animasyon programı Final Cut Pro X 2.000₺ civarında fiyata satılıyor. Aslında üç boyutlu sahneler oluşturulamıyor, yani 3d animasyon programı denilemez fakat 3d titles özelliği bulunduğundan dolayı 3d Animasyon Programları kategorisinde yer verdik. Sadece macOS sisteminde çalışması dezavantajlarından birisi. Listedeki fiyat/performans açısından en yüksek orana sahip animasyon programı diyebiliriz. 3 boyutlu tasarımlar yapamıyorsunuz fakat bunun dışında yapmak istediğiniz tüm senaryoları ekrana dökebiliyorsunuz. Final cut pro x programının kullanılabilmesi için macbook veya iMac cihazlarından herhangi birine sahip olmanız gerekiyor. FCPX ile animasyonlar oluşturabilir, üç boyutlu yazılar yazabilir, video montajı yapabilir ve istediğiniz efektleri verebilirsiniz. Program sadece App Store üzerinden satılmaktadır. Rekabet ettiği diğer yazılımlarla karşılaştırıldığı zaman açık ara önde olduğunu söyleyebiliriz.

Bryce 7 Pro

Sistemler: Windows ve macOS DAZ 3D firması tarafından geliştirilen Bryce 7 Pro 3d animasyon programı şimdiye kadar kullanacağınız en ilginç programlardan bir tanesi olabilir. Çünkü programı kullanırken üç boyutlu tasarımlar hızlıca gerçekleştirilebiliyor. Çünkü kullanım sırasında kendinizi program kullanıyor gibi değil de, bir simülasyon kullanıyor gibi hissediyorsunuz. Boyutlar arasındaki geçişler rahatlıkla yapılabiliyor. Coğrafi ve topoğrafik özelliklere indirgenmesi ise dezavantajı sayılabilir. Çünkü bryce animasyon karakter veya maskotlarına değil de, coğrafi özelliklere odaklanmış durumda. Örneğin bir dağ bir kaya bir deniz bir doğal nesne çizileceği zaman hızlıca yapabiliyorsunuz. Şirketlerin tanıtım videolarını oluşturmaya gelince bir hayli zorlanabilirsiniz. Çünkü her sahneyi coğrafi donelerle anlatmak zorunda kalabilirsiniz. Hava yolu, taşımacılık, nakliye, doğa sporları, paintball, yamaç paraşütü gibi şirket sahiplerinin tanıtım videoları yapılırken bryce 7 pro tercih edilebilir.

Joker Animasyon Programları

Bazı animasyon programları vardır ki her kategoriye girebilir ve her zaman ayrı tutulmaları gerekir. Kullanımı oldukça basit, herkesin kullanabileceği ve öğrenilmesinin zor olmadığı, en önemlisi istediğiniz her şeyi yapabileceğiniz eşsiz yazılımlardır. Bu tür animasyon programları joker animasyon programları olarak listeledik.

Sketchup 3D Design Software

Sistemler: Windows, Linux ve macOS Belki de video ve fotoğraf tasarım dünyasındaki dengeleri yerinden oynatan yazılımdır. Sistemler: Windows ve macOS Ajax aslında tasarım programlarının genel mantığını yansıtan basit bir 2d animasyon programı olarak nitelendirilebilir. Programı indirmeden Online Animasyon sayfasından denemeler yapabilirsiniz. İstediğiniz her şeyi ekrana yansıtamazsınız. Kullanabileceğiniz araçlar oldukça kısıtlı. 2d animasyon programı veya 3d animasyon programı mantığını bu programla kavrayabilirseniz, tüm yazılımları rahatlıkla öğrenebilirsiniz.

Sistemler: Windows Vyond masaüstü program olarak sadece windows işletim sistemini desteklese de, online olarak hizmet verebiliyor. Online animasyon programı pek bulunmaz, vyond nadir yazılımlar arasında yer alır. Ayrıca şablonlar sunarak size hızlı çözümler üretmektedir. Online animasyon programı olduğu için haliyle ücretsiz olması düşünülemez. Ücretsiz online animasyon programı piyasada yok. Sisteme kayıt olduktan sonra üyeliğinizi ücretli üyeliğe yükseltiyorsunuz. Oluşturduğunuz animasyonlar kendi sitelerinden de yayınlanıyor.

Clara.io

Sistemler: Online Clara.io web sitesi aslında sıfırdan animasyon oluşturmak için yapılmış bir site değil. Ücretsiz online 3d animasyon programı da değil. Peki neden animasyon programları listesinde var? Çünkü CLARA 3d animasyonlar oluşturulurken çok büyük kolaylıklar sağlıyor. İşleyişi de oldukça kolay. Siteye girip ücretsiz üye oluyorsunuz. Database veritabanlarıda yüzlerce, belki de binlerce materyal bulunuyor. İstediğiniz materyali seçiyorsunuz. Daha sonra bunlara animasyon efektleri veriyorsunuz. Son olarak render alıyorsunuz. Sistemler: macOS ve iOS iMovie apple tarafından geliştirilmiş bir yazılımdır. Sadece apple tarafından üretilen cihazlarda kullanılabiliyor. Çok akıcı ve isteklerinizi karşılayabilecek bir yazılımdır. Boyut olarak büyük olsa da, profesyonel bir video montaj programı diyebiliriz. 4K videolar dahi düzenlenebiliyor. Videolara efekt verebiliyor, üzerine ses eklenebiliyor, üç boyutlu dünya haritaları tek tuşla eklenebiliyor, direkt olarak iPhone telefonlara export edilebiliyor. Piyasada bulunan en iyi ücretsiz video düzenleme programlarından diyebiliriz.

Edius

Sistemler: Windows Bazı televizyon kanallarının haber montajlanmasında kullandığı Edius programı, kısayol tuşları konusunda oldukça başarılı. Kısayol tuşlarını iyi kullanmışlar ve video montaj programı olarak tercih edilebilir. Video üzerine yazılar yazabiliyor, eklediğiniz yazılara videolara ve resimlere efekt verebiliyorsunuz. Ücretli bir yazılımdır ve lisans gerektirir. Ülkemizde yaklaşık 100 euro € civarında bir fiyata satılmaktadır.

Estelle Angrist : Millicent Goodnestone – Apprentice Stone-Carver

Inside every stone is a piece of art, so says Millicent. All you need to do is listen to the rock and take away the unnecessary pieces. Now, the artistry comes in the patience with which one removes the extra bits of stone. Patience, hammer, chisel, and a light touch are all that are required. Otherwise, a good piece of stone can become a dust pile very quickly. Thank goodness today is a festival day, because Millicent has been sweeping piles of dust for a while.

Alessandra Appiotti : Bernadette Albright – Matchmaker

The shire is being visited by the World’s most famous Bachelorette: Queen Elizabeth! If Bernadette can find the one for Queen Elizabeth, she will go from rising star to full-on supernova! She’d better get started lining up eligible bachelors! Or Bachelorettes! She hasn’t met Her Majesty yet, so who is she to judge her tastes?

Andréa Barton : Lady Blanche Parry – Lady in Waiting

This devoted Lady has served the Queen from the time our monarch was in nappies! They are boon companions, sharing court life and all its intrigue and frivolity. While she may look like the marzipan on the cake, her skilled organization of the Queen’s library and fondness for a good jest keeps her wit sharp enough to cut like a knife. Just ask the fool that attempts to play with her heart strings or guitar strings!

Kristin Bauer : Frances Newton, Lady Cobham – Lady in Waiting

Lady Cobham is thrilled to be on progress with the Queen. After all, this busy mother needs some time with the Ladies. With her soft nature and quick smile, she can often times be found with the children of the Shire, telling stories, rhymes, riddles, and playing games. Her sense of mirth does not leave her without a streak of mischief, as she does love to put her finger in the pot, give it a stir, and see what happens! Naughty or Nice? You be the judge!

Lauralette Bernard : Tolly Muneford – Harbor Master

Nothing comes in or out of the shores of Mount Hope that Tolly doesn’t know about. Her web of knowledge reaches far and wide, and she does it all in the service of the Shire. If only she wasn’t so keen on sharing all this knowledge with literally everyone, she might be able to use it for personal gain.

Jennifer Blackwell-Yale : Emily O. Bales – Fire Brigade

It has been 15 years since a monarch last visited the Shire of Mount Hope. Coincidentally, it has also been 15 years since the last fire in the shire of Mount Hope. Emily is always ready for action, but no one is quite sure she would know exactly what to do should action arise. When in doubt: stop, drop, roll, and have some wine. It seemed to work out just fine for the Old Dun Cow!

Karen Rose Bitzer : Rosie DuLait – Milkmaid

This milkmaid typically spends her day milking the cows and goats on the farm; carefully churning the butter; separating the curds from the whey; making the precious cheese to sell at market; all the time, singing and talking to her fine, generous, milk-laden friends! Is it any wonder that Rosie’s dairy products are highly sought for their sweet, creamy nature? It is even said that her happy cows seem to prance in the fields, as if dancing to a jig. Is that even possible? With Rosie, one never knows! Today she was up early: the Queen is expected and she wants to offer the sweetest cream and the finest butter to lay upon the Queen’s table.

Tabitha Borges : Abigail Montgomery – Governess to the Lady Mayor

Abigail has always had a way with children, and has taken care of all the Lady Mayor’s progeny, which means she is quite resilient! Of the many duties, trials, and tribulations the Penburthys have put her through, her favorite activity is still telling stories, and she is a masterful storyteller. Now that the Penburthy children, Calvin, Penelope, and Danforth, have all grown up, she is experiencing Empty Nest Syndrome far more than Delores is!

Elizabeth Burkholder : Paraffin Dyson – Bellows-Mender

Paraffin is a fan. She is a fan of fans. Her bellows will blow you away, that’s how big of a fan she is. Sometimes she can be a bit of a blowhard, but usually she can play it cool. And yet, even the coolest of bellows-menders may have a difficult time not having a meltdown with our Queen on the Shire. Time will tell if Paraffin maintains her composure or has a blowout, but one thing is for sure; she will certainly enjoy this festival day!

Jasmine Crist : Mary Robin Richland – Shire Ne'er-Do-Well

Every shire has one, ours is Mary Robin! While good-natured and always seen with a smile, it is known that one must keep a hand on your purse and an eye on your goods, for you may come up short when the back side of Mary Robin you see! Slight of hand, quick of feet, and always with a jest to share, it is her good nature and sharp wit that keeps her just on this side of the law, for now! It has been heard that she has high aspirations, but for what? Ask her, she may or may not share!

Ashley Crowther : Ira Roth – Actuary

Everyone’s heard of mad scientists, but a mad actuary? That’s much rarer. If you stare at numbers all day long, apparently they start staring back. Eventually, everything starts to look like a ledger, and you can see the numbers everywhere. Sure... that adds up...

Josh Dorsheimer : Jakob Werner – Landsknecht

Professional mercenaries fight the wars of the Kings of Europe. Professionals like Jakob. He does his level best to never think about any of that, though! He would rather spend his time gallivanting around town, spending his hard-won gold on drink, friends, and frivolity. The oldest of the family, Jakob is sometimes mistaken as the decision-maker of the clan. While he won’t outright deny this, the three siblings all know who really calls the shots: their baby sister!

Elisia Freeman : Agnes Lambourne – Apple-Monger

Apple cider, apple butter, apple sausage, apple crisp, apple cake.... Just ask this happy-go-lucky lady what you can do with all those apples, and she will tell you! Be prepared, her list is LONG! Apple juggling, apple carving, apple tossing, apple dicing, apple bocci. Do not be fooled, she knows that man does not live by apples alone; everyone knows you need a little cinnamon and a lot of laughter!

Corey Graff : Wagner Werner – Landsknecht

Wagner travels all over Europe fighting battles with his brother and sister for one reason: he loves them both dearly. Honestly though, he would much rather be laying down in a meadow watching butterflies. Sometimes suffering from middle child syndrome, Wagner’s gadabout ways certainly make life interesting for all the Werner siblings.

Steve Hager : Rip Skeleton – Gravedigger

There are two things certain in this world: Death, and Taxes – and Rip ain’t no accountant. Its always nice to have a friendly face build your final resting place.

Jeremiah Halteman : Ronald P. Eversmeyer – Yeoman Guard

They say history is written by the victors. Ronald has every intention of ensuring that our good Queen’s name goes down in the history of the world as the greatest victor of them all! He is always prepared to put himself between Her Majesty and danger, wherever it comes from, in whatever form it takes, and at any personal sacrifice! His extensive training in the art of personal security has rendered him one of the elite of the yeoman guard; as long as Her Majesty is not attacked from the air. Unfortunately, Ronald has a fear of butterflies. Something about the wings just throw off his rhythm, but no worries....butterflies in Mount Hope? Never!!

Jonathan Heise : Sir John Giffard of Chillington, Minister of Parliament, Knight – Nobleman

This Minister of Parliament felt it his duty to be present during the Queen’s progress at Mount Hope. Concerned that perhaps this tiny village would not be up to the task of hosting our Queen, he would be quick to move the festivities to Chillington. Upon arrival he realized his foolish mistake; never had he seen such a shire, and thought perhaps ‘twas time to move Chillington to Mount Hope! However, for now, why not enjoy the festivities?

Brianna E. Holmes : Mary Hill, Lady Cheke – Lady in Waiting

This gentlewoman of the Privy Chamber is well loved by all. Her husband, John Cheke, a gentleman of the court, encourages her in her service of the Queen. The Queen has blessed them often with gifts, grants, and an estate or two. Even at this show of opulence, Lady Cheke takes it all in stride. She finds joy in the simple things in life; her children, her rose garden, and her love of arachnids. Their homes, their legs, and loving little eyes; can you ever have enough? I think NOT says Lady Cheke.

Anastasia Keno : Louise Weaver – Shepherdess

A diligent if mischievous shepherdess, Louise has a passion for all things fluffy! Why should sheep be the only animals allowed to graze free? Let the cats graze free! Let the puppies graze free! Let the mice graze free! Free the animals! Sorry... she can be very passionate.

Jennifer Litzinger : Cherie Piquant – Spice Merchant

If the first pinch of salt is free, be prepared to pay dearly for everything else. A shrewd business woman, do not let Cherie’s smile fool you. She was born to barter, and barter she will! Well-known on the shire as the woman who can get what you need, do not be afraid to ask; as long as its cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, or cardamom, by day’s end, it will be in your kitchen. Ask for a song, and you could be in for a treat.

Dana Micciché : Katherine Champernowne, Lady Kat Ashley – Lady in Waiting

Appointed governess, tutor, friend, and confidante, Lady Kat Ashley ensured that her Queen had all the necessary tools to rule England. Well versed in astronomy, geography, history, Latin, Spanish, Italian, and Flemish, this unassuming woman is also trained in the art of swordsmanship, axe-throwing, archery, and caber tossing! Think you know a little about a lot? Lady Kat knew it first!

Traci Mohl : Olivia Charnwood – Huntress

The family tradition of hunting and tracking lives on in the guise of Olivia. Like her mother and grandmother before her, ear to ground, sniffing the air; hunting prey is in her blood. Mount Hope’s finest archer, Olivia never fails to bring home the meat – just don’t ask her to cook it!! On this festival day, she plans on showing off her tracking skills by sniffing out a merry time!

Beverly Newton : Charlotte Seaswift – Shipwright

This buoyant aquatic engineer helps keep the Harbor of Mount Hope afloat. An eye for design and a passion for innovation drive Charlotte. She knows that the fine line between sink and swim is just a patch away, and she is always ready to keep things floating on.

Jared Nocella : Miles I. Gore – Professional Henchman

Some people are natural born leaders. Miles is not one of those people. Miles is a natural born lackey, and he’s the best there is at being second fiddle. Always down for doing the dirty work, and he does it dirt cheap! Miles is a sidekick with a smile and has a flare for following.

Alexandra Pentz : Dorte Werner – Kampfrau

The youngest of the Werner siblings, but make no mistake: she is the one that keeps the family together. From designing the boys’ clothes, managing the family finances, and fighting her share of battles, she is as clever as she is dangerous. And after all that, she still has the ability to be the most mischievous of the three!

Lianna Pike : Rosalind Anne Uxbridge – Gardener

Rosalind has had her hands deep in dirt, up to her elbows, preparing for the Royal visit. The gardens must be perfect! Simple details like stone placement can be so critical, yet every time she plants, those chipmunks and rabbits have a feast . That is why Rosalind has a bed in all of her garden plots. She sleeps in a different flower bed each night. Thank goodness the festival is finally here, she can finally get out of the beds and enjoy the beauty of her work with the rest of the shirefolk.

Nicolas Rainville : Grayson Thomas Hemplewhite – Squire to the Master of Horse, Sir Robert Dudley

What an honor to serve the horse that carries the saddle that seats the man who serves the Queen so closely! To say that Hemplewhite is a hard worker is putting it mildly. His work is never done. Clean the tack, muck the stall, check the hooves; not to mention ensuring that Tinker, the horse, is always sweet-smelling for his Master to ride. But today is a festival day. Tinker smells sweet, now its time for Hemplewhite to have a bit of merriment.

Jessica Reesor : Holly Teacake – Baker

Everyone likes sweets at a festival, and Holly has made sure the shire is stocked with confections to please any palate. Fruity, chocolatey, savory – whatever your taste, Holly has you covered! An obsessive planner, Holly loves the order of a recipe. It is a mathematical equation for pleasing people. If only everything else was that simple!

Laura Reesor : Pearl Topstitch – Tailor

A visionary designer with an eye for style. Never satisfied with the same-old same-old; when something works once, she’s done with it! Her appetite for new and exotic is matched only by her skill. She can look at a piece of fabric and see the hidden...pearl...of genius within. Now it is time to show off her skills to the Queen.

James Riley : Adam Cringer – Yeoman Guard

A newly-minted member of the Yeoman Guard following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father before him. Legend of Adam’s monster-hunting exploits have already preceded him. Now it is time to see if the man can match the Legend.

Victoria Sangston : Dorothea Anne Heartley – Etiquette Mistress

Today is a big day for the shire of Mount Hope, and the Lady Mayor has tasked Mistress Heartley with making sure everyone puts their best foot forward. Of course, is that the right foot or the other right foot? Joyfully surveying the shirefolk, she knows everyone will be on their best, smiling, bowing, hat tipping, formal greeting behavior – or else!

Michael Sheffield : John Dee – Royal Astrologer

A good ruler has good advisors. Time will tell what kind of advisor John Dee will be. He says he talks to angels. Perhaps he does. Perhaps he’s just a brilliant con man. One thing is for sure – eccentric only scratches the surface of describing this stargazing man.

Jessie Smith : Polly Lynne Pickering – Apprentice Rag-picker

Polly Lynne has been following in her mum’s footsteps for as long as she can remember. Mum does have a keen eye for bits and pieces, but Polly Lynne is impatient! When she is THE Rag-Picker, she will be much more efficient! Would anyone REALLY notice if a bit was snipped off a gown here and there? Bushes and scissors are a picker’s best friend. She has heard of the fine fabrics worn by the Nobles of the court and is hoping to snip.... errrr....snag a piece or two of those fabrics for herself!

Mary Smith : Penelope Ann Pickering – Rag-picker

Some call it rag-picking, but Penelope prefers to call it fabric repurposing opportunities. Opportunities abound in the shire of Mount Hope, all you have to do is look around! And look she does!! With a keen eye for bits of fabric, lace, gossip, and good will, she has a kind word for everyone and perhaps a bit of scrap for those in need; and, really, who doesn’t need a bit of scrap now and then? And now, with the training up of Polly Lynne, she’s busy busy busy! Thank goodness for the Festival. Mirth, merriment, and fabric scraps!

Evelin Stayner : Buttercup M. Rosehips – Scullery Wench

This young lady is happy when surrounded by a pile of dirty anything. Beginning, middle, end! That is where she finds her joy. Every day has its adventures, and they all start when the sun comes up and last throughout the day. You may find her dancing, singing, or generally making herself an asset to the Shire of Mount. Hope. Some might even call her a fledgling pillar of society; probably more like a fence post. But everybody has to start somewhere!

Katrin Stayner : Eva Froman – Sausage Queen of the Shire

Blessed with infinite patience, and a lithe mind to keep up with her husband. The Fromans are nouveau riche, and happy to flaunt it. Eva is the true brains of the operation. Her wurst is the best, and her husband is the best at being the worst. [the Sausage King is being played by one of the improv directors who doubles as an independent act.]

Jordan Taft : Dorothy "Dottie" Brooke – Lady in Waiting

This Maid of Honor is a seasoned Lady of the court. Certainly Lady Dorothy has done it all, seen it all, and has the bodice to prove it. However, Mount Hope intrigues her. After all, it is time for her to settle down and have a family of her own, and the matchmaker of the Shire is famous throughout the land. She may leave here betrothed, or at least,with several good prospects. Love is in the air, or, is that TURKEY???

Robyn Thompson : Fiona Erin O'Donald – Personal Foot Post of the Lady Mayor

When Fiona came to Mount Hope, the first person she met was the Lady Mayor, who had just lost her third foot post in six months. Fiona needed a job; she had no idea what a foot post was, but she knew she could do it! She is Irish after all! As it turns out, she is the best foot post the Mayor has ever had!! Messenger, she’s the Lady Mayor’s personal messenger!

Sandi Trait : Becky Billingsly – Town Crier and Lady Mayor’s Official Letter-Opener

Becky Billingsly, the voice of the shire, knows full well the weight her proclamations carry. As Official Letter Opener for the Lady Mayor, she is at the forefront of all the news that is news in the shire. Of course, nothing beats today’s happenings! The young Queen makes her way to the gates of Mount Hope. How thrilling to share her news and tidings with the court of her Majesty!

Ariel E. Urich : Kathryn Bridges – Lady in Waiting

This Maid of Honor is on her first progress with the Queen. She has lived her entire life in training for this very time and now that it is here, she realizes that something is missing. She knows how to carry the cup with grace and style; the basket is a simple matter; smiling at the proper time, sitting, standing. So, what is the problem? She has this deep desire to make people laugh! So far, she has shared a bit of her talent with the Ladies of the Court, but perhaps this small shire is where she can be a bit more free with her jests and merriment. Oh, the festival day could not get here soon enough!

Brianna Yale : Lydia der Schlachter – Butcher

Leaving home to work for the Fromans was a tough decision but one she is happy she made. Butchering brings her such delight. From the time she begins to sharpen her blade to the beauty of well-cut chop, this butcher knows her way around a slab of beef, pork, and lamb. However, never ask her for a capon! She has been squeamish since the capon incident of 1552. Enough of that! This is a festival day, and she plans on celebrating with the shire folk and perhaps even catching a glimpse of the new Queen.

Darrell E. Yoder : Sylvan Farelight – Tinker

If it needs mending, this is the man to do it. If it needs replacing, step right up, he has it. If you need a bit of magic in your life, having Sylvan on the streets ensures that your needs will be met! Always popular when he arrives on shire; Sylvan can be counted on to share a bit of news from afar; a bit of wisdom from within; and a bit of magic from, well, from where magic comes from!
