I have a problem with picturing descriptions of people, so I use face claims a lot. My face claims of Katy O'Brian and Melissa Barrera as Janice Wood and Katrina Falconthief are too powerful for my brain.

KUCI’s Top 10 Albums of 2017
As the year comes to an end, we asked our fellow DJ’s of KUCI to name their top 10 albums of 2017. After sorting through over fifty nominations, here is our list of our favorite albums that were released this year, with a some words from our community explaining why. We’ve also threw in some honorable mentions at the end! 2017 was definitely a great year for music, and we can’t wait to discover more in 2018. Happy New Year everyone!
10. Citizen - As You Please - (Run For Cover)
“Citizen was a band that I had always known about, but had never quite caught my ear enough to dive into their music. That changed, however, with As You Please. The opening track, “Jet”, is reminiscent of their past work with emotional lyrics and a driving yet somber punk instrumental feel. The following track titled “In the Middle of It All” provides a completely new and evolutionary soundscape for the band, while staying close to their usual deep lyrical content. The album as a whole is easy to listen to for both intent and absent minded purposes. Personal favorite tracks are “Ugly Luck” and “Medicine”.” - Jeremy Bibeau
"After I heard that they had a new record coming out, I just assumed that they were going to continue to develop the sound they decided to go with for Everybody Is Going To Heaven, which is why I decided to pass on As You Please at first. However, after caving in to all of the hype surrounding the album’s lead single entitled “Jet,” I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Citizen had not only made a return to their old sound, but that they had refined their sound to appeal to more of a diverse audience. This is the case for all of the songs on As You Please, not just “Jet,” which made As You Please quite a pleasant surprise upon listening to it for the first time. Much like some of their contemporaries’ latest work, As You Please is by far Citizen’s best and most complete album to date. By combining the best qualities of Citizen’s old sound (i.e. catchy yet intricate guitar riffs, powerful/explosive choruses, and angst fill vocals) with a new found sense of confidence, wisdom, and maturity, as well as more elaborate song structures and piano interludes, you get what in my opinion is the best version of Citizen that has ever existed." - Tommy DeSilva
9. (Sandy) Alex G - Rocket - (Domino Recording Company)
"The songs, while simple, sound absolutely timeless to me. “Proud” sounds like a drive out on the open countryside. “Big Fish” sounds like a quiet confession of strength to a father. “Powerful Man” sounds like a tear jerking show of emotional maturity to a skeptical family. While Alex has always been lauded for his songwriting chops (even earning a Frank Ocean co-write in the process), this is the first record that feels like it has emotional heft to it. " - Stephan Masnyj
"Rocket is revelatory, each song sampling and combining various genres (and creating new, nameless genres in the process) in a completely Alex G fashion. The melancholia, yearning, and dreaminess that pervades this album will tug at your soul in the best ways possible." - Sophie Prettyman-Beauchamp
8. Sampha - Process - (Young Turks)
"Sampha is not one to hold back the heart on his sleeve. While having worked with Sbtrkt and being it's other half, he has finally seem to come out of his shell and give his voice, well, a voice. "No One Knows Me (like the piano)" tells of his past childhood and struggles trying to figure himself out while making the living room his confessional. 'Incomplete Kisses' speaks of unrequited love with amazing lines and utter softness of ones heartbreak. Sampha has shown us his true colors while barely breaking the ice. I can not wait for more albums to come from such an amazing voice in R&B." - T.J. Bingamon
7. Thundercat - Drunk - (Brainfeeder)
"Very solid (and lengthy) release from Thundercat this year with Drunk. Each track on this album is dripping with funky jazzy vibes that make it really difficult to get sick of." - Alex Morrow
"A Personal favorite that could easily go unnoticed from the amount of music set out this year. Thundercat's Drunk is unprecedented in the ability to make emotion through his work with bass. A great album to listen to for long rides in the car alone." - Christopher Santiago
6. King Krule - The Ooz - (True Panther Sounds XL)
"I think The Ooz is one of those albums you really need to listen to a few times before it grows on you. I think it's an amazing follow up to his last album, and I feel like on The Ooz we get a better sense of his Archy Marshall music and sound. The imagery he uses is also interesting and creative!" - Katrina Vergara
"King Krule’s inventive garage punk-jazz fusion and mumbling, growling voice are always worth waiting for. The Ooz oozes creative frustration ingeniously overcame. The esteemed wunderkind who is Archy Marshall really did that." - Sophie Prettyman-Beauchamp
5. Lorde - Melodrama - (Lava / Republic)
"Lorde’s comeback that I didn’t know I needed, putting into words all the themes of finding oneself, looking for love, and just growing up from being a teen." - Caroline Nguyen
"The main narrative surrounding Lorde’s rise to prominence has been her authority for her age (as of now, she is 21), and that has never been more apparent than her clear-eyed analysis of teenage years on this record. “Homemade Dynamite” dissects the social dynamics and self destructive tendencies people often have during a party with surgical precision, while “Supercut” takes a relationship in retrospect and understand that memories of a lost lover usually have a rose-colored tint to them. The most stunning cut on the record is “Writer in the Dark,” a song that embodies the hate, regret, and mourning that often comes directly after the end of the relationship. The way Lorde is able to thread the needle between all the separate emotions throughout the verses and chorus is nothing short of stunning, and her vocal delivery delivers an emotional depth Adele would kill to have." - Stephan Masnyj
4. Alvvays - Antisocialites - (Polyvinyl Record Co.)
"Alvvays are such an awesome band, and in my opinion, Antisocialites is nothing short of a masterpiece. Characterized by jangly guitars, dreamy synth parts, poppy vocal melodies, and lead vocalist Molly Rankin’s soothing voice, the songs on this record sound as though they were taken straight from Indie Rock/Dream Pop heaven. While listening to this album, one can easily lose themselves in the dreamy nature of some of these songs. That’s not to say by any means that this record “drags on.” In fact, no two songs sound alike on this album, which definitely showcases the versatility of Alvvays’ musicianship as well as their ability to keep listeners on their toes." - Tommy DeSilva
“I was over the moon when I found out Alvvays was coming out with another album. Their self-titled is one of my favorites, so I was eager to know what they had in store for their sophomore album. When I first heard "Dreams Tonite" I knew the rest of the album would be just as great. This album is your indie pop dream, with a different feel on each track.” - Caitlin Ison
3. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN - (Top Dawg / Aftermath / Interscope)
"Releases by Kendrick Lamar never go unnoticed and DAMN certainly did not when it dropped. By far a definition of modern classic and experimental." - Christopher Santiago
"Kendrick Lamar's DAMN is an insightful look into the rapper's past life and future. While K. Dot relays the album to be the story of his father coming into a close call of having an alternative life ending, but while still relating to his current life woes. Thru tracks like 'Yah' revealing the grittiness of Compton blue-collar work, to 'Love' a record boasting of vulnerability and questions, Kendrick delivers yet another piece of his life's work and puzzle." - T.J. Bingamon
“From my perspective, it’s weird to think of Kendrick at the top of the pop charts; I always saw him as a supremely talented artist who’s ambitions ran deeper than pop radio. However, it turns out Kendrick can release pop hits while still maintaining the endless depth his raps often do. “Humble” is both a boast and a self-aggrandizement in the form of a three minute pop song. “DNA” is a firestorm of a rap that examines the good, bad, and ugly that exist within all of us.” - Stephan Masnyj
2. Tyler, the Creator - Flower Boy - (Columbia)
“Flower Boy is Tyler, the Creator’s fourth album, and encaptures his wittiness and internal conflict through a softer side with the use of neo-soul and the sounds of early 90’s hip-hop. He delves deep into his emotions in a mere 47 minutes, making this one of his most intimate and sincere yet shortest album. It focuses on isolation, the falling-out of friendships, and the pain of unrequited love, themes many listeners can find relatable. The whole feel of the album holds such a significant difference from Tyler’s older albums, which really goes to show his growth, not only in his music, but as a person.” - Raenna Caguioa
"Whenever Tyler, the Creator would release a record following his breakthrough “Goblin” in 2011, the question always remained the same: When will he finally grow up? His talent was always palpable, the dizzying raps in “Yonkers” and the emotional story in “48” showed his talents as a writer, and his growing production credits on “Wolf” and “Cherry Bomb” showed that he had a distinct style within his musical repertoire. Yet he always fell back on his worst tendencies; frequently using homophobic slurs or creating worthless posse cuts that did nothing but ruin the flow of his records. All of that changed with Flower Boy, easily his most cohesive and mature record to date. Much has been said about his alleged coming out in the record (a subject that Tyler has remained mum on since the album’s release), but it isn’t stated enough just how wonderful this record sounds. The strings and horns that dot highlight “See You Again” are stunning, and the queasy synths that Tyler has used in the past take on a new urgency on “I Ain’t Got Time.” Every single rap, beat, and instrument inform each other throughout the record, and not a single thing sounds out of place throughout. “Tell these black kids they can be who they are,” raps Tyler on the highlight “Where the Flower Blooms.” For the first time in his career, Tyler sounds like he’s living those words to the fullest." - Stephan Masnyj
1. SZA - Ctrl - (Top Dawg / RCA)
"I felt like this album came out at the right time in my life. The deeply personal lyrics on every song made it weirdly relatable for me. SZA really refined her sound since her last album titled Z. I love the concept and every song on this album. " - Yasmin Moradi
"An album that needs no explaining, SZA's Ctrl ups the ante with her debut studio album, most well known for her features prior to this, she makes a name for herself with this anecdotal release." - Christopher Santiago
"It's no wonder SZA is probably one of the biggest artists to emerge out of 2017. I hadn't listen to her prior, but there was so much talk after Ctrl was released, I knew I had to see what the fuss was about. To say the least, I was not disappointed. Of course there are the standouts of the album, "The Weekend" and "Love Galore," but there are also some underrated tracks like "Drew Barrymore" and "Prom." Personally, I think an artist's biggest success is when they can make a listener feel their emotions, regardless of if they can relate to the song or not. I felt SZA's emotions in every single track, and I don't think I've really ever been in any of those situations. I thought that was really beautiful. Also, it's hard not to fall in love her incredible buttery voice." - Caitlin Ison
"I love this album because all the songs are bangers but they also make me cry. One publication called Ctrl an album about side-hoe anthems but that's so far from the truth! SZA sings about insecurity, adjusting to adulthood, and bad relationships with such honesty. Anyone can relate to her struggles of going through your twenties feeling vulnerable, whether you're a side hoe or the main." - Katrina Vergara
"Where do I start? SZA’s vocals are gorgeous and lush, earnest and biting, confident even when expressing pain and insecurity. It’s a versatile album you can both cry to and dance to, mixing elements of R&B and lo-fi indie rock. It’s a reminder of female strength and independence, and even has an ode to the vagina that simultaneously disses ungrateful, trash dudes. SZA is a normal girl with the same wishes and fears as the women who listen to her music, her lyrics resonate with those of us who are still finding our way and learning how to love and respect ourselves. It’s like sitting down with a good friend who laughs with you, cries with you, and always knows the right thing to say, helping you regain your own power. Ctrl is what it feels like to be a woman." - Sophie Prettyman-Beauchamp
Honorable Mentions
The XX - "I See You" (XL Recordings)
"A perfect balance between pop and melancholy, with songs like "Dangerous" and "On Hold" upbeat despite lyrics suggesting doomed relationships. Meanwhile, "Say Something Loving" and "A Violent Noise" are filled with the emotional angst that has made the XX so popular." - Jarrett Lovell
The Drums - Abysmal Thoughts - (Anti-)
"You can always count on The Drums to deliver a fantastic surf-pop inspired album, and they do it once again with Abysmal Thoughts, the title appropriate for 2017 indeed. The album does have its fair share of these, as Jonny Pierce, blessed with an airily angelic voice, grapples with heartbreak and feelings of nothingness on “If All We Share (Means Nothing)” and chastises the upper class with “Rich Kids.” Nevertheless, The Drums remain beachy goodness with the beloved simple riffs and chords that bounce along, tambourines, cooing backing vocals, and 80s-esque synths that are sure to leave you dancing through your tears." - Sophie Pettyman-Beauchamp
Tigers Jaw - spin - (Black Cement Records)
"This record felt like it took forever to come out seeing that many of us Tigers Jaw fans had been talking about it ever since their last record Charmer came out in 2014 along with the announcement that Tigers Jaw would from now on be a two-piece band solely featuring founding members Ben Walsh and Brianna Collins. Would they be able to make a record by themselves? Would it sound as good as the original lineup? Two questions that had lingered for quite some time amongst the Tigers Jaw fan base. After making us anxiously wait for over three years (which producer Will Yip made even more dreadful by dropping little hints about the album here and there for like six months), Tigers Jaw finally released spin earlier this Spring, and as you would expect, it was definitely worth the wait. Tigers Jaw have always been an awesome band who have consistently put out great records from front to back, so for me to say that spin is their best album would be kind of stretch, but it’s pretty damn good and should be in that conversation. While staying true to the sound that the original five piece version of Tigers Jaw developed, Ben and Brianna were still able to add their own personal touches to the songs on this record, especially since they were both in charge of songwriting duties for the first time (spin is the first Tigers Jaw album that Brianna has contributed songs to). The thing that I like the most about spin is that you can really tell that Ben and Brianna spent a lot of time on these songs and put their best effort forward to make them the best that they could be in every way. Every song on this album is well crafted both musically and lyrically. No two songs sound the same and everything sounds perfect down to the smallest detail. I really appreciate great musicianship like that, and I look forward to hearing what Ben and Brianna have in store for us next as they continue to keep Tigers Jaw not only alive, but alive and thriving." - Tommy DeSilva
HAIM - Something to Tell You - (Columbia)
"By far, my favorite record that was released this year. I've been a huge fan of HAIM since their first album, which was released when I was in high school, and I had that sh*t on repeat for days. I remember finding out that the three sisters were working on new material, and I was literally counting down the days to hear their new single, "Right Now." The video of them singing the track live in a studio was so raw and filled with emotion, it left me speechless. I knew this album was going to be packed with tears and heartbreak. I love this album because while it dwells on the hurt and pain one can experience in a romance that could've been, the music contrasts it with its upbeat, dancey tones. This album really has got that Stevie Nicks / Shania Twain vibe (which is fitting because they chose to cover "That Don't Impress Me Much" for their tour), and mixing that with their HAIM sound really makes it a memorable record. One of my favorite characteristics of this band is their bad ass attitude, and although it's a record about heartbreak, you can still feel that energy throughout." - Caitlin Ison
BROCKHAMPTON - Saturation II - (QUESTION EVERYTHING, INC. / EMPIRE)
“Arguably Brockhampton’s best album. Nearly every song is one I can jam to (or if it’s the last song- one I can cry to). I love Brockhampton’s unconventional rap lyrics and I think it makes them stand out from up-and-coming artists. They really are the best boy band since One Direction.” - Yasmin Moradi
"BROCKHAMPTON came out with 2 other albums just this year but I would say this was the most iconic one. With this album they really established a signature sound and the members were able to find their voice within the boy band. Even though Pitchfork didn't give this album a good score, I would give this album a 10/10 if not only for cultural impact but for how good SWEET is." - Katrina Vergara
Hot Flash Heat Wave - Soaked - (OIM)
“HFHW’s sophomore album is what I like to call a true sound of the (indie rock) times. Soaked is a big step in a new direction, after Neapolitan delivered hard hints of garage rock and sunshine pop; this album rides a chiller, more ambitious wave, reflecting contemporary rock genres like Slacker Rock and Jangle Pop [The Smiths, The Beatles, Mac Demarco, Homeshake], while still giving into sunny roots of Surf and Garage rock [The Beach Boys, The Strokes]. The record clocks in at just under 40 minutes, while delivering two more tracks than its preceding album. One play-through will not be enough, especially on that cozy summer day.” - Spartacus Avina

Space Campaign Adventures Session 1
I’ve been working on this campaign for months partially due to my players taking forever to get a character ready and partially due to the fact that we’re all adults who have busy lives but I digress. It’ll be in bulletpoints for the most part because I’m a little busy to be writing out the entire 6 hour session but I hope it’s still enjoyable
Exposition: The campaign is using The New World of Darkness... most of which I have homebrewed at this point. It’s in the year 6520 where galaxies are exploitable and there is an intergalactic government. The government hires teams of people to work for the agency of the Alien Relations Registry (ARR) where they may be assigned to bounty hunting, planet exploration, or rescue missions. These teams are given their own ship to live on and are paid for doing their missions. It’s a good job for people in need of money. We will be following the crew of the... Peetza Ship. Below the cut are the details.
Character introductions:
Art by @marche-towers
Dalmatian Ladyworld (Played by Dan)
“And remember that bad times... are just times that are bad.” - Katrina, Animal Crossing
Dalmation “Dal” Ladyworld is a naive 23 year old Earth Human who is obsessed with space racing (think of NASCAR). He was raised as the son of a couple who owns a vacation planet, Planet Ladyworld. He spent a lonely existence on the planet as a child who was raised to one day own the planet and run it himself. Handy with gadgets, Dal created his own communicator with an AI hologram named COSM-0. COSM-0′s entire function is to open doors. Upon learning a terrible secret about himself, he fled the planet in scorn and anger at his parents for hiding this secret from him. He took an escape pod and left his planet behind without a plan for himself. After floating in space with no food and out of fuel, he is found by Avicia Wolfe (listed below). She rescues him and takes him into her home with her family. The two decide to become part of the ARR and explore planets and rescue people. Dal is not very into bounty hunting as he is wary of guns.

R’ango Charles Wimbleton (Played by Brandon)
“Skate fast eat ass give em whiplash” - Unknown
“R’ango” Charles Wimbleton is a 2 year old (47 on his planet, physically mid-20s) Lizard sentient from the planet Argourithax 9. This 2′11″ (0.7m) tall Lizard is a sharpshooting bounty hunter who does not follow the rules very well. R’ango’s colder planet hosts four quadrants where Poultry, Rats, and Otters live in their own quadrants and fight for power. His mother raised him to be a rough and tough child, who is tougher than even he. He wields two laser guns which he uses with expertise. He has been bounty hunting for the past year and has not been able to keep himself on a team for very long. Usually outlasting them in combat or leaving leaving them behind, R’ango has been gaining a lot of exasperation from the ARR for his apathy and callousness towards team members. He has been assigned to the Peetza Ship crew to protect them as the rest of them are new to the ARR.
Art by me (:
Avicia Wolfe (Played by Ally @girl-wonderbread)
“My soul is in the sky.” - Pyramus, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Avicia Wolfe is a 20 year old Temper Human. Temper Humans are a sub-species of Human where their skin color indicates the climate that they can withstand. Avicia can withstand both extremely hot and cold climates. She is a pizza-loving mechanic who is obsessed with space ship racing. She works for Wolfe Chartering Services, a company in which her parents own, and is expected to inherent the company. Though her parents are kind and are not pressuring Avicia to take claim of the company for quite some time, Avicia is anxious about the pressure to take on the company. She believes her younger sister is much more suited for the job than she is. Avicia one day finds Dalmatian Ladyworld (see above) floating along in space and rescues him from dying of starvation while on a transport job in her personal ship. She takes him into her home and they quickly become best friends. Eventually, they decide to join the ARR together and form a team so Avicia can find herself.
Art by Michael (no social media exists for him), clothing is wrong as Issac wears coral armor
Issac Zeharkatzen (Played by Michael)
“Question everything.” - Unknown
Issac is a 19 year old Merfolk from the planet Födelseort who wields a trident and loves to research and learn. He is organized and considered a jack of all trades with a lot of motivation for success and progress. Issac’s tribe had been manipulated by a cult leader for most, if not all, of Issac’s life. Issac and his father one day found out that the cult leader was a shapeshifter who was manipulating the tribe into a cult, and Issac and his father planned to flee the planet. Unfortunately, his father got caught in the fray and was captured, but Issac managed to escape. He traveled on galactic spacebuses (they go from planet to planet) for a few months, trying to find his way around the technological world that he was unfamiliar with. Eventually, he found himself on planet Discopia, where an Intergalatic Government Headquarters resides, and learned that he could become part of the ARR for their vast amount of research resources, and decided to join.
Session 1:
Dal and Avicia are already excitedly hanging out in the waiting room to meet their new team members when Issac arrives
Issac pretty much immediately explains that he ran away from a cult and just puts his whole issues on the table for his team mates
Dan, Ally, and Michael + Me all realized that they all made socially awkward characters and that this may be a rough start
R’ango bangs his ship (see below) on the side of the headquarters with a pretty shoddy park job
He jumps out and walks into to the building without much of a thought and starts snarking the receptionists to take him to meet his new crew members
He walks into the waiting room, unhappy about another reassignment, and immediately flirts with Avicia who doesn’t reciprocate
Dal is afraid of R’ango’s guns and is immediately wary of him as a person
The receptionist explains that he’s there to make sure they don’t get hurt, and R’ango immediately get irritated that he’s “babysitting”
After their introductions are stated, the receptionist takes them to get the hangar to get their crew ship. She explains that the crew ships have detachable rooms so they may decorate them as much as they desire because the rooms can be recovered.
They walk through the hangar to get to their ship and see that they get one of the most beat up and disgusting crew ships. It’s a dull camo green and has a bunch of dents and dings on it. The receptionist explains that the new crews get less expensive ships because they are lower on the ranking and if they climb the ranking they can get a better ship
Avicia asks if the ship is named and the receptionist answers no which causes a group excitement
She gives them a tour of the ship to explain that the living area is also a “cockpit” as the controls are lined with the windows, there is a kitchen, 6 bedrooms total (”Just incase”), a holding cell, a small gym, a bathroom, and a space to hold two small ships. R’ango and Avicia’s ship (see below) are stored there already.
A computer also holograms out of the table in the living area, and each room has a full-sized bed, a desk with a hologram computer, a bed-side dresser, and a closet. A window also exists in each room.
She finally explains that there is an AI called WONDA built into the ship program who can help them with pretty much anything (a good Siri?) and leaves them to their own devices to leave when they please
The group asks R’ango how he got kicked out of his other groups and he recounts two occurrences where they:
Went to a Zombie infected planet and his teammate touched a brain and got the scent on him which led the zombies to them and he was killed
Went to Planet SeaWorld for a diving mission and Shamu ate his teammates
Avicia interrupts this to go choose her room because she finds this ridiculous
The group plays around on the ship for awhile after choosing their rooms
R’ango’s room is already pre-decorated and decides to take out a stash of raw rat meat he had been storing there
Avicia puts up a poster of her favorite Justicia Galactic Racer, Westley Knoberskit
Dal starts to put his clothing and items away
Issac starts taking notes in a small journal of what to get for his room
Avicia eventually starts looking through the specs of the ship so she could fly it after seeing that their first mission is an assigned rescue mission
The rescue mission resides on planet Igathan in the Playdoh Solar System (the Solar System over, as they reside in the Justicia System at the moment) which is a planet with sentient plant-life and a person called Virgilio crashed onto two days ago
Avicia gets on the phone with a hangar personnel to leave the hangar and he tells her that she can’t leave yet
She has to name the ship so they can identify it and the name suggestions were:
The Nut Buster
Ginormoboy
Teetering Disaster
Debby
Salad Bowl Bowl
The CONCHious
Little Chauncey
Fluffysmacka
The Salty Pineapple
Caustic Spittle
Lil Chicken Wing
And then decide on Pizza Ship (pun of Piece of Shit for their ship)
When Avicia says that, the personnel states that Pizza Ship is taken but there is Pizza-Ship14 and Pizza-Ship20 still available
They try Peetza Ship and when the personnel says that’s acceptable they immediately decide to start choosing fonts for their ship.....:
The hangar has to be cleared for them to leave so Avicia has to wait for that entire process
Meanwhile, Issac realizes there is a computer in the living room and decides to try to use Google for the first time
He asks WONDA to help with using the computer as he never has before. This resulted in him grabbing at the screen and shaking the mouse rapidly. Dal heard the commotion and decided to come over
He helps Issac navigate to google and says he can search whatever he wants on it
Michael: “Issac just searches ‘Trident’. What comes up?” Me: “Mmm well normal stuff for tridents! A wikipedia article, some tridents for sale, some information blogs, some videos....” Michael: “Okay. Issac sees this and says ‘Amazing,’ and then he gets up and leaves.”
Dal decides that he’s going to use the open computer to order stuff from Amazon but first he tries to introduce WONDA to his personal AI, COSM-0
They hate each other so Dal decides just to search Amazon
While Issac walks back to his room, he hears the sound of lips smacking and guttural eating from R’ango’s room and peeks in
He sees R’ango surrounded by raw meat and eating it
Issac approaches him and asks him about it, recognizing that it is some sort of small creature, but not what
Issac: “This looks a little weird.” R’ango: “That’s because you’re hungry! Have some.”
Issac takes a small bit and tastes it. He immediately knows that it’s disgusting and turns away to hide him spitting it out and pocketing it, but R’ango sees it and starts to laugh
Issac records it into his journal and goes back to his room to leave R’ango to eat
Avicia finally gets the OK to leave and looks up on Google Maps how long it would take them to normally fly to Igathan because they only have enough in the hyper drive for 2 warps a week and she wants to conserve them
It would take a whole month to just travel there
So she decides to hyper drive
After getting out of the hangar she immediately punches it without telling the others
R’ango and his meat are flung against the wall. His raw meat is splattered everywhere and ruined
Issac manages to catch himself and not fall but a line from his pen marks all of the pages in his journal
Dal tries to catch himself from flying off the back of the couch but he misses and smacks into the wall in back of him
And as soon as it starts it ends and they’re outside of the lush green planet of Igathan
Suddenly R’ango screams: MY MEAT
Issac rushes over and sees the meat everywhere and goes to help R’ango but R’ango is seething. He decides to go exchange some words with Avicia before cleaning up the meat
Avicia is looking at the weapons with WONDA and is given an item that will help them with the mission. It’s a small wooden dog that when thrown to the ground will transform into a Shiba Inu Rescue Sniffer which will lock onto a scent and follow it. Dal is interested but still peeling himself off the wall and regaining his bearings
Avicia chooses a laser sword that acts as a light saber but weaker and clips it onto her hilt when R’ango storms over
He starts to pick a fight with her about not telling anyone about the hyper drive and how his entire food stash is splattered on the wall
Avicia states that there’s food in the kitchen and Dal says that he would help R’ango cook if he’s too short for the countertops
The counters can readjust, as WONDA informs them, and R’ango stomps off angry that they’re not accommodating him and goes to help Issac clean up his room
Avicia calls Issac and R’ango to the living area after they’re done cleaning so they can prep for the mission
She pulls up a hologram of Igathan where the location of Virgilio’s ship was last spotted
They decide that they’re going to take Avicia and R’ango’s ships down to the planet while the Peetza Ship stays around orbit since it’s their living area
They take off to the planet and we decided to take an intermission
Intermission:
Dan got ice cream and has to use a soup ladel to eat it which sparks a conversation of what spoon we would choose out of a list of spoons
Brandon thought we were..... picking spoons as a weapon........ fjadslkdghfg
When we returned to the game, my players would not stop interrupting me on my description of the planet?? hmmmm impatient
Ally: “I leave the ship-” Me: “I haven’t even said you landed yet! I was gonna describe the place!”
Dal: “I like it here. (:” Me: “You’re not even on the planet yet! I said it’s ‘lush’ and that’s it!” Dan: “Omg I meant the inside of Avicia’s ship!” Me: .
Avicia lands her ship fine while R’ango’s single seat ship clips a tree and crashes into the ground and slides 20ft away
Everyone jumps out of Avicia’s ship to check on R’ango but he’s okay
Me: “Okay, so all the plant-life here is at least 7ft tall or bigger so like...” Ally: “It’s like we’re in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!”
The group rolls perception to see if they can find sight or sound of Virgilio’s ship and these were the results
Dal (rolled 0 successes): Oh, these are very nice trees! All the plant-life is bigger than us. (:
Avicia: (rolled 1 success): I guess I’ll check farther from R’ango’s ship
Rang’o (3 successes): *dusting himself off and glances up, seeing a wing of a ship in the brush a ways away*
Issac: (4 successes): Oh look! I think there’s something over here
They find Virgilio’s ship and see that it was probably shot down and crashed into this planet. The hatch is closed and everyone tries to pry it open but everyone is a weakling baby here
Dal pries open the finger-print lock to try to hack into it but he doesn’t recognize the technology. Avicia recognizes it but doesn’t really know how to fix it
Dal decides that he’s going to use a bat that he got from the ship to try to smash the window
When he hits the window it bounces off and hits him right in the face, giving him a nice nosebleed
R’ango starts cackling at him and Avicia and Issac notice the bushes rustling behind them
Four thorny vines start to slither out of the bushes and R’ango notices it now too while Dal is too busy holding his head
Avicia tries to reason with the vines that they’re not there to hurt the plants and asks for where Virgilio is while taking out her sword
A vine grapples her and R’ango shoots it to get off of her and it releases her but it still looking for a fight
Avicia tries one more time to reason with it but it’s a chance roll
A chance roll is where they roll a d10 and if they roll a 1 it’s the worst failure logically allowed and if it’s a 10 it’s like pulling off a crazy ass move that wouldn’t normally work
Me, to myself: “Ha, she’s trying to reason with plants this is funny-” Ally: “I GOT A 10.” Group: SCREAMING
Me: ....... Well I guess the vines decide to slither away..............
After that knock to the head, Dal realizes that COSM-0 opens doors and sticks the communicator on the door
He narrowly dodges the hatch bursting open and Dal and R’ango climb into the cockpit while Avicia and Issac stay on guard for more vines
Dal is rolling almost entirely terribly and doesn’t notice anything about the ship while R’ango sees that it was taken down and that the guy probably left unharmed
Dal decides to use the Shiba Inu Rescue Sniffer and throws it on the ground, revealing a black and white Shiba Inu
Me: “The dog is like Black Hayate-” Dal: “Lets call them Sandy. (:”
Dal has no experience with dogs and therefore doesn’t know how to tell gender so Avicia does it for him and realizes that Sandy is a girl
Sandy gets onto a trail and starts to follow it while the others follow her
They go for about 2 miles until she stops at a very large thorn bush and starts barking at it
There’s some rustling inside of it and they notice that there are small openings for creatures around R’ango’s size to enter
Three smaller thorn bush creatures walk out of the openings and I describe them like thorny tangela for the ease of my players (most of the creatures I use are made up so I can’t provide real pictures)
They manage to walk past the three while they are staring curiously at the group and Avicia squats down to talk to them but yields nothing as they have no mouths and can’t answer her so she yells at the bush for Virgilio but doesn’t receive an answer
They’re wondering if he’s inside the bush and Dal decides to try to check out an opening one of the vine boys came out of but he can’t see anything
He sticks his hand in and a thorny vine shoots out and wraps around his wrist, cutting into him
Dal starts struggling with the vine and Issac wraps his arms around Dal and tries to help pull him out but one of the outside vinegelas wraps a vine around Issac’s ankle and cuts into him too
The vine boys start to attack everyone and combat starts
R’ango pulls out a gun and tries to intimidate them but they are unphased
Avicia pulls out her sword and tries to set Dal free but she misses the vine completely while Dal and Issac are pulling on it
Dal gets his bat while a vinegela whips Avicia in the thigh for trying to attack the vine from the bush
Issac lets go of Dal to try to stab the vine around his ankle with an energy trident but misses
The one wrapped around his ankle sprays him and Dal with thorns and cuts them heavily
R’ango starts shooting at the vinegelas but he doesn’t kill any which causes one to set his sights on R’ango and spray him with thorns, immediately taking him down to 1 slot of health left (he only has 4)
Sandy barks at that vinegela to try to intimidate it and the group is like
Dal tries to whack at the vine but misses and a vinegela whacks Avicia again while she grabs Dal and tries to pull him out some more and they finally release him from the vine but his wrist is blood and hurts
Issac tries to stab at the vine and gets it, causing the vine guy to retract. He tries to hit Issac with a vine whip but it just hits his coral armor
The vinegela distracted by Sandy tries to whip at her but she dodges out of the way and R’ango aims and shoots the vinegela dead and hides behind a tree, but terrifies Sandy in the process
Dal screams that he wants to help Sandy and for Avicia to let go of him
Avicia gets hit by another vine as she runs over to Sandy and scoops her up and starts running away from combat
Issac, now free, starts squaring up with a vinegela and misses a stab with the trident while it also is just hitting armor
R’ango shoots the one that attacked Avicia dead and Dal runs over and kicks the vinegela but gets a thorn in his foot in the process
Issac skewers the vinegela but it’s wriggling and R’ango shoots it while Dal books it away from the scene as well
R’ango follows and Issac starts to survey the area and sees that behind the giant thorn bush is a large canyon where mushrooms are sprouting up from the bottom of the canyon. Their tops are at level with where Issac is at and they are close enough that someone could jump across one by one. Further down the canyon is a forest about a mile down
Dal immediately gets out of breath after begging Avicia to return Sandy so he walks back to Issac while R’ango catches up with Avicia
Dal looks over the side of the cliff and then goes back around to the thorn bush with Issac because they believe that the thorn bush is tied to Virgilio
They hide behind some trees and decide to throw a stone at the bush and it starts to rustle again which induces PANIC into both Issac and Dal and they both stay hidden until the rustling stops
They decide not to do that again and Dal says that they should call Avicia to bring Sandy back because she obviously brought them there for a reason
Issac doesn’t have a phone and Dal’s communicator is the level of a walkie-talkie/pager but he calls Avicia
Avicia and R’ango are just walking together with Sandy in tow back to their ships and Avicia asks where Dal was and he says he ran out of breath so he just went back to the bush with Issac
He tells Avicia to bring back Sandy and she says she’s going to fly the ship over with her so Dal decides to send his location to her after Issac asks if it’s smart for her to fly the ship in the jungle with all the trees but Dal has faith in her
While getting to the ships, Avicia asks R’ango if he wants to just be in her ship and they can ride together but R’ango says he wants to fly his ship and he’ll catch up with her
Avicia smoothly makes the 5 minute flight over to Dal and Issac
R’ango gets inside his ship and decides to smoke “Lizard Weed” and hotbox his ship
Brandon: “Okay. Let’s drive.” Me: “Well, you gotta do Dexterity + Drive but you get a -2 for being injured like you are, and a -1 for being high.” Brandon: “What! Um! This lizard weed is special and-” Me: “No! Omg! fjadsfdl If it’s lizard weed then it’s weed for lizards and it does the same as regular weed!” Brandon: “Have you smoked it!” Me: “Yes!” Brandon: “I mean lizard weed!” Me: “No, but you haven’t either! Take a -1 so it’s a -3 total!” Brandon and I: *start to laugh* Brandon: “Okay, fine, fine.”
R’ango does so poorly on his roll to even take off that he slams on the gas and jettisons the ship right up into a branch which slams him back down into the ground from the momentum
Ally: “Holy shit...” Me: “It’s fine he has a sturdy, expensive ship. That he crashes.” Ally: “He’s just crashing this expensive ship!?” Me: “Yea, imagine like having a Mustang and just dinging it and denting it. That’s R’ango.” Ally: “What the fuck! Avicia has the equivalent of a Ford Pickup truck and this asshole has a Mercedes that he’s just crashing into everything!”
Avicia realizes that R’ango isn’t behind her and calls him and she fails any sort of logical thinking and believes he got caught in vines
The group decides to go into Avicia’s ship and go get R’ango, but Avicia is immediately pissed when she sees that R’ango hotboxed his car
R’ango gets out, smoke leaving the car, and on the phone with her is asking for help
She uses the grappling hook of her ship to grab him and reel him in
Avicia is so pissed that she dings her ship a little making their way back to the thorn bush and they decide to grappling hook the bush to see if Virgilio is underneath it
They pull up the bush and a bunch of vinegelas run out and there’s nothing underneath - it was just their home
Avicia now has this bush stuck to her grappling hook and she tries to shake it off, almost causing R’ango to puke but he doesn’t
They land where the bush was, with the bush underneath the ship, causing it to land at an angle, and they have Sandy sniff out the premises again
She turns to look across the canyon and barks again so the group is trying to decide whether to go across the canyon or down
Dal: “I think we should climb down.” Issac: “I don’t know if that’s a good idea-” Avicia: *already climbing down and fails her roll but catches herself on the clfff* “HELP HELP HELP”
Issac immediately runs and grabs her but fails to pull her up and Dal grabs onto Issac and helps pull both of them up back onto the cliff
Realizing that this was a bad move, they decide to take the ship across the canyon
Avicia drove a little too close to the mushrooms and got the thorn bush stuck on a mushroom
Avicia: “.... Okay so revving the engine doesn’t get us anywhere.” *takes out sword* “Someone cut the thorn bush off so we’re free.” Michael: “Ummm... shouldn’t you just back up? If you got stuck going forward just then just back up and unhinge yourself...” Ally: “.............Right. Right. That’s a good plan.”
They unhinge Avicia’s ship and make their way across the canyon and land safely on the other side
Avicia decides to start spending her time sawing at the bush to free her ship. The boys decide to walk towards a watering hole that Dal spotted
When they get to the watering hole, they see that some streams are convening into the watering hole and that the beach is made of shells and stones and gems
Issac is immediately enamored and runs towards it. R’ango is so high he just is along for the ride. Dal keeps going out of curiosity
When they all enter the beach water sprouts from the streams and forms a wall around the area, blocking them from Avicia
And that’s where we ended because it was past midnight and we were TIRED. Tune in for session 2, hopefully sometime soon!

Paradise City Stories
[EXT. Turismo Beach - Noon 1980s] There were kids breakdancing to early Hip Hop, muscle dudes, hot girls in bikinis, hot dog stands, old folks, a mix of cheapo hatches, old and abused American Couples, and high tech modern sport cars passing by. Danny [V.O] “Paradise City, a city of dreams, a city of luxuries, but most importantly a city of Vices.” Turn Up The Radio by Autograph started to play as the Camera flies into a sun faded blue 1970 Carson Rattler Convertible. [INT. Car Interior] There are two guys in the car. The driver is a brown dog with reddish brown hair, he is wearing a blue letterman Jacket. The Passenger is a gray dog with a black Jheri curl, he has a red track jacket on. Danny [V.O.] (Smug) “See that handsome son of a bitch, that’s me, and sorry ladies but I’m taken. I’m that all American Jock all of the girls wants, sure at the time I didn’t have a job you would tell your father, but I have that charm, that look, you know that Good Boy but isn’t a wimp look. Right next to me in the Passenger seat is my best friend Damon Jackson, he’s pretty cool, though he does complain a little too much. I always feel bad for his childhood, with him living in one of the worst hoods in Emperor City, but he has his ways to deal with it, normally working out.” [EXT Turismo Beach] The Rattler stops by the curb. Damon got out. Damon “Hey thanks man.” Danny “Yeah no problem Damon.” Danny turns down the radio. (Smug) “I was already planning to come here anyways.” Danny pointed to a red fox with dark red feathered hair and is wearing a purple bikini top and a denim mini skirt.. I gave him hell for the comments.” A short blonde female cougar in a light blue sweater and a white skirt had a bunch of shopping bags, came by the car and started to put the bags in the backseat. She then jumped into the back seat. Danny “Katrina, what are you doing?” Danny [V.O.] “That’s Virginia’s best friend Katrina, she is well dumber than a bag of rocks, and she likes to shop a lot, she has a problem.” Katrina “Oh I just did some shopping.” Danny “Yeah no shit. How much did you waste?” Virginia slaps Danny’s face Virginia (Angry) “Danny just let it go, it’s her money, it’s not our problem.” Danny gave Virginia a look of Confusion. Katrina “She’s totally right Danny.” Danny “Stay out of this.” Katrina (Smug) “Why is it my money?” Virginia “Yeah Danny it’s her money and her problem.” Daryl [O.S.] (Yelling) “Danny start the car!” A tall and buff Wolf with a black mullet & sideburns combo carrying a suitcase runs into the screen and jumps into the back of the car, landing on the bags. Danny [V.O.] (Sighs) “And that is Daryl. The man who ruined my life.” Katrina (Screaming) “DARYL!” Virginia (Surprised) “Daryl what the fuck?!” [EXT. Daryl “And Company.” Andrew “Yeah yeah yeah. Did you get the money Daryl?” Danny “Yeah he did, but the deal went to shit and the car kinda got shot up.” Danny points at the bullet holes. Andrew “Ah don’t worry. The car was a lemon anyway.” Virginia (Worried) “Hey is Ace here?” Danny [V.O.] “And finally there is Ace. The guy that is probably going to kill me. Ace (Giving Danny the death stare) “Hello Virginia.” Virginia “Ace he’s fine.” Ace (Still giving Danny the death stare) Virginia (Roller her eyes) “Ace he’s fine, you don’t have to protect me Ace (Grab Danny by the shirt) “I don’t trust you Danny, you’re just like them.” Virginia (Shouting) “He’s not like them!” Ace (Drops Danny) “Fine.” Andrew (Grabs the Suitcase) “While you guys deal with this, I’m gonna count the cash.” Andrew went inside Danny (Shouting) “What the hell is wrong with you?!” Danny got into Ace’s face. Daryl (Pulls Danny back) “Okay that’s enough Danny, no need to piss him off even more.” Danny [V.O.] (Deep Sigh) “I know this will sound crazy but in a way, Daryl was right.” Danny “Piss him off more? The fucker tries to kill me every other week!” Daryl “Well look at it this way. At least it’s not every week.” Danny Punches Daryl right in his left eye (Shouting) “I’m going to kill you first you inbred dumbass!” Ace Pulls Danny away from Daryl Daryl covers his eye and stumble back a little Virginia (Shouting) “Danny!” Danny stop trying to kick Daryl and turn around to Virginia Virginia (Crying) “Just stop this.” Runs inside Katrina “Jez, you guys are messed up.” Danny [V.O.] “I may not know it at the time, but she was right. We were fucked up, and the next 3 years shows that, but me being dumb and young. I thought she said that to get me away from Daryl.” Andrew [O.S.] (Yelling) “This is paper!” Daryl (Shouting) “What?!” Andrew [O.S.] “It’s fake!” Daryl (Under his breath) “Shit.” (Shouting) “So now what?!” Andrew [O.S.] (Shouting) “Kill that cheap son of a bitch! Boys we’re gonna head to the Nudie Bar tonight!” Danny (Shouting) “Can we get this job done first!” Daryl “Okay fine. Fun Police.” Danny (Shouting) “Do you take anything seriously?!” Daryl “Buddy listen, I have my goals and you have your’s.” Danny (Shouting) “Really what are they?!” Daryl “Give me More sex, more tats, more blood, more pain, more threats, more fast, torn jeans, cocaine, more pretty strippers with the big red lips making big tips showing off the nice big tits Ha!” Danny Punch Daryl in the shoulder. “Jesus Christ I’m with a goddamn child!” Daryl (Chuckles) “That means you just hit a child, you abuser.” Danny “Daryl shut the fuck up.” Daryl “Okay Jez, Though Crowd.” [EXT. Cheap Hotel on the Strip - Night] Daryl knocks on the door. Redneck “Who is it?!” Daryl (Bad Mexican Accent) “Housekeeping.” Dann punches Daryl in the shoulder while Daryl chuckles at his bad accent. Redneck “Come in.” Daryl Daryl pulls out a double barrel sawed off Shotgun he has around his right leg and opens the door. [INT Cheap Hotel Room - Night] No one was in the room. Danny (Whispering) “Where is he?” Redneck (With a baseball bat.) “RIght behind you.” The Redneck took a swing at Danny but Daryl jumped in and took the hit, knocking the gun out of Daryl’s hand and landing right in front of Danny. Danny picked the gun up, he was shaking. Daryl Daryl kicked the bat out of the man’s hands. (Shouting) “Shoot the bastard!” Danny Everything went slow as Danny pulled the trigger, firing the gun, the Lead went into the Man’s heart, and knocking him off of Daryl. Danny [V.O.] “At this moment, my life changed forever.” The man slams into the wall, as he slides down a trail of blood following him down. Daryl (Impressed) “Oh shit Danny… Go wait in the car I will clean up..” Danny walks out of the Hotel while Daryl gets his knife out and starts cutting the carpet covered in blood. [EXT. Carson Rattler - Night] Dary put the body in the trunk and got into the Rattler that Danny was waiting in. Daryl starts the car and floors it out. [INT. Carson Rattler - Night] Danny (Shocked) “I… I just… k-killed a man.” Daryl (Joking) “Yes you did you cold blooded killer!” Danny “N-n-no, I just… killed a man.” Daryl “Got some Shell Shock there Danny-boy?” Danny “I j-just killed a man.” Daryl (Worried) “Shit… Okay let’s go to a Strip Club, I need to cheer you up.” Daryl stops at a red light. Damon [O.S.] (Angry) “Danny what the fuck?!” Damon jump into the Rattler. Daryl “Hey Damon.” Damon “Where the fuck where you? You left me out here!” Daryl “Hey Damon calm down a little.” Damon “Calm down? Motherfucker I got mugged, and I had to beat the living shit out the mugger to get my money back!” Daryl “And Danny shot a guy, and by the looks of it he’s not dealing with it well.” Damon (Goes from Angry to comfortin) “Oh shit Danny, look it will be alright, I mean chances are he was a loner, no friends, no family, no one will remember him.” Daryl “He was part of the Dixie Mob.” Damon “So yeah like I said no one will remember him.” Daryl (Chuckles) “Yeah true.” [INT. Strip Club - Night] The place was sleazy and dirty. The pink Neon lights the hallway to the Stage, the building had about 20 people in it, not counting staff. Danny, Damon, and Daryl were sitting next to each other. Danny was still in shock. Damon was bored as he does not care for women, and Daryl was Happy as can be. Danny [V.O.] “Now if Daryl fucks up he will do one of three things, he would get you a gun, a car, or take you to the strip club, and since all of the stores close at 8, it’s this.” DJ “Alright Fellas here’s Cherri!” The DJ plays Sticky Sweet by Motley Crue as an Arctic Fox with Pink highlights come out. Daryl (Excited) “Woah baby come here!” (Calm) “This helping Danny?” Danny gave Daryl a blank stare. Daryl “Yeah I need to get her more naked. Thanks for the advice.” Damon (Roll his eyes) “Why couldn’t you leave me in the car?” Daryl “Because this is more fun.” Damon “You know I’m Gay, right Daryl?” Daryl (Put his finger on Damon’s lips) “Shhh. We can have people knowing about that, only god knows if another AID’s panic happens.” A couple of Yuppies come in and Daryl has his eyes on them already. Daryl “Hey you see they fucks over there. Watch this.” Daryl walks over to the yuppies. Damon “Oh shit he’s gonna do a singing rant again.” Daryl (Shouting) “HEY YUPPIES!” (Angry) “You read the Daily Street Journal, sippin’ champagne in your limousine, Well I'll be alright with a cold Shud Light and a hot rod magazine.” Danny and Damon (Try to hide) Daryl (Angry) “You all love your Vitesses that you drive, Well my gas guzzling '81 Pickup suits me fine. So keep in mind you pretty kids that think you're all so cool, Just remember we're the ones that beat the shit out of you in school.” (Grab Danny and Damon) “We're just backwoods boys, making noise in a new age society. And we don't give a shit about the stock market or life of luxury.” Danny and Damon were motorfied as the yuppies just stared at the three. [EXT. Strip Club Parking Lot- Night] The Parking Lot had like 5 cars, the Rattler the boys drove in with, a Blue with a Silver Strip 1984 Carson Rattler, a black and red pinstripe 1983 Krystal Corona, a gray and blue striped 1982 Kuruma K280, and a White and Yellow 1959 Carson Luxomatic. The music stopped as the three were thrown out both verbally and physically. Daryl (Shouting) “Fuck you guys!” The boys got up. Damon and Danny started to walk to the Rattler before Daryl grabbed them by the collar. Daryl (A little boozed up) “Woah woah woah. Where are you two going?” Damon (Deadpan) “Back to the car?” Daryl “And not pick up a new model?” Daryl pulls Danny and Damon to the new Rattler. “So Damon do you magic.” Damon (Sighs) “Daryl, Danny is in Shock, you’re drunk and it’s 11 at night. I think we should worry about getting home first.” Daryl (Open the door to the Rattler) “Hey the door is open!” A gunshot killed the silence and struck Damon’s shoulder. Damon screams in pain. Daryl (Panicked) “Shit, shit, shit Danny you got to drive!” Daryl pulled Damon into the car and Danny hopped into the car. The Keys feel from the Sun Visor on Danny’s lap Danny [V.O.] “I don’t know if it’s pure Fight or Flight but on that night I was in full Flight & Fight.” Danny throws the car into reverse, jumping the curve. The shooter shot the glass to the Kuruma and hopped in it. Daryl “That ain’t no bouncer.” [EXT. Danvis St] The Rattler speeds away while the Kuruma speeds to the Rattler. The Kuruma side slips three parked cars. [INT. Rattler] Daryl “Jesus, that little junkomobile isn’t going to live if he keeps driving like that!” Damon (Shouting) “Can you keep pressure on me!” The White and Yellow 1959 Carson Luxomatic comes like a Bat outta hell and nearly T-Bones the Rattler. The Kuruma T-Bones the Luxomatic, sending the japanese Sports Car into a Gas Station, the Luxomatic burst into flames from the impact, the Kuruma barely missed the pumps and landed into the back off of Pickup. The Rattler made a sharp left turn into Parkview Ave. Daryl “I think they’re gone.” [EXT. Parkview Ave] The Krystal blocks the road. Danny stombs on the brakes, nearly hitting the Krystal. A Racoon in a Denim Cut off Sleeve Jacket got out of the Krystal. Danny got out of the Rattler. Damon (Worried) “Danny the guy probably got a gun!” Danny Right Hooked the Racoon in the face and started going to town on him. Daryl “Yeah kick his ass!” Danny [V.O.] “You know what. There was something about bashing that guy’s skull into that car that changed me, maybe it’s that paired with me shooting that guy earlier, but I changed, for the better and the worse.” Daryl got out of the car and went over to Danny. Danny was just finishing up beating the guy. Daryl “Jesus Calm down there killer, you finally got out of Shock.” Danny Stop beating the guy. “Yeah.” Daryl “Oh sick Vest.” Daryl took the vest off of the body. Danny “Daryl that’s low.” Daryl (Shouting) “It’s a badass vest!” Put the vest on. “Like a glove. Come on, I bet Virginia is worried sick about you.” The boys got into the Rattler and drove away. The Credits Role as Darkest Side of the Night by Metropolis plays. The Camera zooms out of the scene and pans to the Moon.

Protector Pt.3
Characters: Derek x Reader, Isaac, Argent.
Summary: Derek enlists the help of his old friend. Argent and the reader get some alone time and Derek comes to a realization.
A/N: Hello lovies! I know it’s been over a month since I’ve updated but I’m getting there. I hope this makes up for it!!! It’s over 4k words.
P.s. not as much login in this chapter but, it’s still alright. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Derek was staring straight ahead at the road as he drove, his knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel tightly. You’d been driving in silence for about an hour now.
“What’s a Duecalion?” You asked gently. His mouth twitched upwards.
“He’s a… I guess you could say he’s a person.” His eyes narrowed “He’s one of the most demented people I’ve ever come in contact with.” He took his eyes off the road to glance at you, “The man calls himself the demon wolf.” You scoffed at that.
“His name is Duecalion. He was born to be evil.” You said as you looked out the window. Derek laughed lightly. You listened as his laughter died down and sighed. You had so many questions.
“Thank you.” He said reaching over to lace your fingers together. You turned your head to glance at him once again. “For being okay with all of this.”
“I’m not sure I am.” You told him honestly with a squeeze of your hand. “I need to know something. Dead bodies don’t just turn up, and you told me yourself that you’re involved with these deaths. I need to know.” You didn’t even mention how weirded out by the fact that there was magic ash that kept people out of places. He took his eyes off the road once again and saw how serious you were. His eyes softened.
“Those kids that died, I knew three just like them, they were… recruits of mine… All fitting the same description. Two of them died because of me.” He gripped the steering wheel tighter and you heard a crack.
“Derek..” your voice barely above a whisper when you spoke. His grip on the steering wheel was loose almost immediately and he straightened up, as if remembering that he wasn’t supposed to act this way. You’d never seen him this stressed.
“The last one though,” he began
“Isaac.” You offered
“Right. I’ve been looking for him for some time. Which is why we’ve been traveling so much. Last I tracked he was headed East. I thought we could beat him and cut him off in Nebraska, but he hasn’t arrived yet, plus there’s been a lot of activity in the area.” He sighed. “Seems Isaac’s been killing. But, he’s not the type. I need to find the truth”
“What does this have to do with Duecalion?” You questioned.
“My thoughts exactly.” He said gruffly. “The fact that he was so close to you tonight.” He was back to gripping the steering wheel.
“That was Duecalion?!” You broke him out of his trance and he nodded. “How does a blind man become the most devious person you’ve ever met?” You asked more to yourself than him.
“He’s not always blind” Derek said simply.
What the hell does that mean? Your questions were back.
—- The clock read 1 AM when you looked up from the game on your phone. Derek was enjoying the soft music coming out of the speakers and you were getting restless once you lost your game for the eighth time. The situations going on in your real life were much more interesting. You opened your mouth but you were cut off by Derek.
“Don’t say it.”
“What?” You whined.
“‘Are we there yet?’” he did an overly high version of your voice.
“I wasn’t!” He gave you a look and you crossed your arms “Well? Are we?” You grumbled as he burst out laughing, you couldn’t stop the smile that stretched across your face.
“We’ll be there soon. We’re meeting Argent at a bar so we can switch cars.” He said once he stopped laughing.
“And Argent is…?” You had no idea who this was. In all this time that you’ve been together you’ve never heard a mention of anyone named Argent. So why did he trust them after three dead bodies showing up?
“A friend. He’ll help us. We’ve been tracking Isaac together.” He told you quickly.
“So… He’s like you?” You asked, hoping to be able to get some more info about Derek. You sensed he still wasn’t telling her everything.
“No, he hunts those like me.” Derek said as if it didn’t matter.
“What?” Hunt? He’s not an animal. And why would he call him? “Do you trust him?”
“I trust him. I’ve known him for years.” He said firmly.
That was all the confirmation that you needed, a few minutes later you pulled into the seedy bar off the highway across from a truck stop so you figured the type of crowd you’d run into and prepared yourself once you both left the truck. You looked over at Derek as he did the same. You’d been in dive bars before so it’s not like this place was scary but, after today you weren’t taking any chances.
“Stay close” was all he said before pushing you behind him. You nodded and followed, gripping his hand as you did. Once at the door, you were hit with the stench of cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana. The place wasn’t too crowded but, it wasn’t dead either. Mostly truckers were inside however, a few women were scattered around.
You couldn’t help but feel self conscious as eyes trailed along your body, most of the men were watching you, all of the women watched Derek. It wasn’t like it was a rare occurrence for the both of you to be oggled, hell Derek told you how many of your neighbors eyes were glued to your ass the other night and how hard it was not to kill them, you didn’t know if he was serious. However, you were not used this many people at once, it was like you were under a spotlight. Neither was Derek apparently because he was growling. Literally growling.
You gripped his hand tighter and pushed yourself closer to him. The bar was dimly lit with a red glow to it, there was a small dance floor with a few people enjoying themselves on it. The tables were littered with people and there were a couple of patrons at the bar, you joined them. Derek ordered you two tequila shots each. You took them without a question and with a cheers.
A tall man with a greying beard walked in and Derek stood, you followed suit. “Argent!” He said with a rare grin, the man looked up at Derek and matched his.
“Derek!” He stretched out his name a little. The two embraced each other in a strong bro hug.
“Long time no see” Derek said as they pulled away.
“Way too long, friend” the man-Argent said to Derek. His eyes landed on you, “No wonder.” The way that Argent looked at you wasn’t like the other men in the bar, it was appreciative. “This beautiful lady must be Y/N.” He smiled at you. He was handsome for a man in his late 30s/early 40s, you noted. “Chris. Chris Argent” he held his hand out for you to shake.
“Nice to meet you.” You smiled at him and shook his hand. So Argent is a last name. You all made your way back to the bar and ordered another round for each of you before purchasing beers.
“I’ve heard a lot about you” Chris said once you were all tucked away at a table in the corner.
“Funny, Derek doesn’t tell me a thing” you rose your eyebrow in his direction. Derek clenched his jaw.
“Y/N.” He warned and you just smirked.
“Still?” Chris said to Derek, seemingly surprised. Derek snapped his head in his direction.
“There hasn’t been time” Derek said curtly.“Plus it’s dangerous”
Chris clearly didn’t agree but he wasn’t going to to make a big deal about it. So he changed the subject and said. “So what have you found out?”
This launched you and Derek into telling him everything that happened over the past three days. The bodies; you noted how they had mountain ash coming from their eyes but, how the last one -the one representing Isaac- looked as if he was dug up from a cemetery, not recently killed. The note; How they left it along with the spiral, which according to Chris and Derek meant revenge. Katrina; you told him how she came to your house with Duecalion. As you began describing her, you were interrupted.
“If she’s who I think she is we have a lot to worry about.” Chris said, rubbing his chin.
“Why?” Derek huffed, his hand resting on your knee.
“She’s an emissary, she used to be a hunter.” Chris narrowed his eyes
“She was playing both sides of the fence?” Derek asked incredulously.
“Wouldn’t be the first time.” Chris said, you gathered that he was talking about himself after Derek nodded.“She’s gonna need to fight” he said after a while. You figured that they were talking about Katrina.
“She can’t. It’s too dangerous” Derek gave one shake of his head, nope that were talking about you. They started going back and forth with pros and cons.
“I think that’s up to me to decide.” You spoke up, Derek scoffed.
“She’s gonna need to be able to protect herself. Don’t wait sixteen years like me.” He took a drink of his beer.
“That’s different. This is not my daughter and she wasn’t born into this.” Derek said quickly, squeezing your thigh. “She can’t even shoot” he said as if that would kill the argument.
“Neither could Allison.” Chris said firmly.
“I can’t shoot but…” You stood and both pairs of eyes watched you curiously as you walked to the bar and snuck a knife. You pointed to the dart board that was fifteen feet away and made sure they were paying attention before you threw the knife directly into the bullseye. Derek’s jaw hung open before he recollected to an impressed smirk. You had one as well when you sauntered back to them.
“Party trick.” You bit your lip.
“When were you going to tell me you could do that?” Derek said and pulled you into a kiss. Chris cleared his throat.
“We don’t go to many parties, darling” you shrugged, your arms draped his shoulders lazily.
“That was so fucking hot” he whispered into your ear and squeezed your ass. Chris was louder with his throat clearing this time.
“We can use this” Chris said with a nod.
“I’m against this” Derek went back to glaring.
“I don’t care, I want to help.” You sighed. Maybe it was naive but, if he was going to risk his life for you, you’d do the same for him. Derek was grinding his teeth together when the bar tender walked up to your table with the knife that you threw. Derek stood in front of you nearly blocking your view, the bartender faltered a bit but didn’t back down.
“Hey, you guys gotta leave” he said simply, running his free hand through his thin black hair.
“And why is that?” Chris spoke up now standing next to Derek. People were looking at you now and you groaned. It looked like they were gearing up for a fight.
“That was cool and all” he smiled and nodded at you, Derek grunted “but you can’t just go around throwing knives” he rubbed the back of his neck. The poor guy didn’t want to do this. The men just stared at the lanky boy and you groaned.
“Come on, we have things to do anyway” you began pulling Derek by the wrist, he glared at the bartender the entire way out. Chris followed suit shaking his head in amusement all the way to the parking lot.
“You go with him. I have to ditch the truck.” Derek said as he began putting bags from your truck to Argents SUV. You did the same and looked at one of Argents bags that was unzipped.Holy shit that’s a lot of guns. You thought.
“Or… We can both go together” you placed your hands on his chest and looked up at him. You were a little nervous about being in the car alone with Chris.
“I have to get back by myself, trust me, it won’t be long” he said as he placed his hands on your hips. “You’ll be fine. I trust him” he reassured you after noticing your wary glance towards Argent in the front seat, “I love you” he smiled down at you.
“I love you back.” You pressed your lips to his roughly and he kissed you back fiercely. He bit your bottom lip and you did the same to him. Your tongues were tangled in each other’s in seconds. You pulled away before it became impossible.
—- The plan was to drive a few miles to the crappy motel in the next town, Derek followed about halfway there but then veered off to the right. You needed to put as much space as possible between you and whatever danger was lurking about.
“So, Derek said you hunted guys like him?” You asked, twiddling your thumbs in the passenger seat. You decided to take the chance to get to know as much about him as possible, he might even spill the beans about Derek.
“Among other things.” Chris said, placing a cryptic smile on his face. “I’m an international arms dealer.” He shrugged, well that explains the guns.
“So how do you know Derek?” You asked the question that had been plaguing you for a while.
“Speaking of hunting, we were hunting Derek. Thought he killed one of ours” He said nonchalantly, you choked on your spit. “He didn’t!” He assured quickly. “Misunderstanding” he nodded.
You were rendered speechless at that. Deciding not to ask the question that was playing on the tip of your tongue. Has Derek killed someone? Argent only specified that he didn’t kill one of his people what if Derek was in the mob and this guy was a dirty cop? What if Argent was a murderer? Arms dealer my ass. You thought after taking a sideways glance at him.
You broke your train of thought once you pulled up to a dusty motel on the highway next to a sign that said ‘WELCOME TO DENVER.’ You smiled at the fact that you had gotten the hell out of Nebraska. You followed Argent through check-in and stood rigid as he only got on room with two queen beds. The elderly desk woman must have noticed your apprehension because she grabbed your hand before you grabbed your room key and said.
“If you need anything, just call the front desk and we’ll pick up right away.” She gave you a kind smile. “We’re open 24/7” her tone now picking up harshness as she directed the information to Argent who nodded, not oblivious to her warning. You smiled greatfully and left to your room. Once you reached your room you and Argent grabbed your respective overnight bags as well as your bag of food. There was a pregnant silence as you sat on the chair provided in the room and Argent sat the edge of his bed. Until his stomach growled and you laughed at the groan he gave.
“Here, take your pick.” You said, tossing the food bag at Chris and twiddling your thumbs. Where the hell is Derek?
“Thanks.” He nodded, taking a microwave burrito and a bag of chips before standing and using the microwave.
You both heated up your respective frozen meals and turned on the television. You weren’t moving from your seat near the door just in case but, you had a more relaxed aura in the room. To the point where you were having an actual conversation. Turns out, both Chris and Derek were born into the lives they now both live. You wanted to know so much more and you were determined to learn, until you heard a distant deep howl in the distance. But, the howl wasn’t what stopped you from speaking, it was the way that Chris responded to it. He stood up abruptly and pulled out a rather large gun, handing you two equally large knives.
“Still got that aim?” you nodded and sucked in a breath when you heard another howl, this one much higher sounding than the first. Chris motioned for you to move towards the back of the room and you did as he instructed. You didn’t know why you were so on edge, the howls sounded as if they were miles away, besides wolves can’t open doors. You were trying to give yourself some comic relief but it didn’t stop your heart from pounding or the bead of sweat that was making its way down your face.
Minutes later the door swung open and you saw the unmistakable figure of Derek with someone draped over his shoulder, he was trying to control his breathing as he bounded through the door, laying the limp boy on the bed where Argent previously sat. Derek’s eyes met yours and he gave you a once-over, making sure you were untouched.
“Isaac.” Argent spoke gravely after shutting the door. Your eyes snapped to the blonde boy at the mention of his familiar name. He looked just like the boy that was dug up, only a few years older and prettier.
“I found him lying next to a sewer drain a few miles out.” Derek said as he worked on tearing off the boy’s already tattered shirt. “He’s got a few deep scratches. He’s been out there for days” Derek told him moving around effortlessly.
“He’ll heal, soon.” Argent said completely positive.
“That’s not all.” Derek said slowly before turning Isaac on his side to reveal a gunshot wound with green smoke coming out.
All Argent did was groan and go to his car. When he came back he had a kit with him and began his work on Isaac, who was now groaning in pain. You moved closer and gasped when you saw how bad Isaac really was. He had four scratches on either side of his chest, they looked as if they were half healed. A few scratches? The boy looked like he was mauled by a wild animal. Is this why Duecalion calls himself the demon wolf? Because he finds enjoyment out of getting animals to attack people?
“Is he… Is he going to be okay?” You asked aloud and all eyes snapped in your direction as if they’d forgotten you were in the room. You’d almost forgotten, too. It was like you were seeing everything through a keyhole in the door. Like you didn’t belong and were looking in on someone’s private life.
“I hope so.” Derek said truthfully, looking at you with eyes that begged forgiveness. As if he’d done something wrong.
“So do I” Isaac whispered softly with a chuckle before screaming in pain and launching up as Chris started digging into his wound for a bullet. You could have sworn his eyes turned an unnatural yellow color. But when you blinked it was gone and Derek was holding him down whispering to him inaudibly.
Once Isaac was calm after being injected with something to calm him down. He sat with bandages across his chest and a distant look in his eye.
“What the hell did you give him?” You wanted to know whatever it was that had Isaac going from convulsing to looking like he was having the best time of his life.
“Wolvesbane.” Chris said, packing his gear back up. Derek grunted. “Well, that’s the non scientific name for it, at least” Chris smiled, seemingly correcting himself. “This particular strain is used for hallucinations” He took his bag and made his way back to the car.
The instant that Argent turned his back, Derek strode over to you, taking your face in his hands. It took one look in those bright green eyes for you to crumble. You began crying softly and Derek wrapped you in his arms, shushing and rocking you all the ways.
“What’s happening?” You whispered to him.
“Shh… It’ll all be over soon, baby.” He said, kissing your forehead. You nodded and held him close for a few minutes, letting your tears dry.
Chris opened the door with an armful of extra blankets, you suspected he did so to give you and Derek a little privacy. Well about as much privacy as you can get with a guy who’s high off his ass and giggling to himself on the bed next to you.
Derek had agreed to take first watch of Isaac and you decided to stay up with him, letting Chris have the bed leaving you and Derek to the makeshift cot of blankets on the floor. The soft yellow glow of street lights breaking through the blinds was the only light littering the room. Once both Chris and Isaac were fast asleep you felt Derek push his body up against yours from behind. Your breathing hitched as he inhaled and wrapped himself to you.
“I probably don’t smell that wonderful” you whispered, thinking about the events that transpired earlier.
“You always smell wonderful” he whispered back, rolling you to face him. You didn’t look at him for fear that you would begin bawling. Derek noticed immediately and began rubbing his thumb across your cheek. Your eyes fluttered open to see his searching your face.
“Derek..” you began softly. “We’re like this often, now.” the slow tears falling from your eyes betraying you.
Your statement rang true and Derek knew. It was all slowly making sense now that you knew that you were looking for Isaac all this time. The fact that he uprooted you both to travel state to state was clear as day when you thought about it. When you and Derek began dating he was in a townhouse that was larger than life, then you moved into your cute little two bedroom apartment that he purchased outright. Then moving from hotel to hotel to ending up in the trailer. Now here you were again.
“I’m sorry” he told you gently.
“Yeah..” you turned away from him and let your tears fall freely. You felt him shift to pull himself closer again. “Don’t.” You warned seriously and made a show of putting space between you two with a pillow.
You cried next to Derek until you reluctantly let yourself give in to exhaustion.
Derek
I ran a hand through my hair as I watched Y/N fall asleep. I feel terrible for what I was doing to her. It took everything in me to hold back the anger in myself, she was beginning to break and it was because of me. I never thought that I’d lay next to this girl while she cried her eyes out and not be able to do anything. And the worst part of it all was that it was because of me.
“Don’t you think it’s time, Derek?” My head snapped to Chris’s deep voice intruding my alone time.
“You don’t get a say in this, Argent” I bit back at him. He may be helping me with Duecalion but, I didn’t need his input on my personal life.
“Don’t you think she should?” He said as he stood. I followed suit in full defense mode. What was he planning? “Calm down. I’m just moving so she can take the bed” he walked to Isaac to monitor his wounds.
“Sorry” I said as I lifted Y/N into my arms gently and lay her on the bed. “She just… She means everything to me” I said seriously as I brushed strands of hair from her face.
“I’m sure you mean the same to her.” He said, taking the chair provided in the room. “You should tell her though. She needs to know what she’s up against. What are you afraid of?” He questioned.
“I know, I can’t lose her though, Argent. I won’t.” I said, sitting at the edge of the bed. “No one’s loved me like this before, not as fiercely as she has” I was looking at my hands now.
Argent and I were never really talkers but, if anyone knew what I was going through it was him. I knew he was right, if I didn’t tell her soon I would lose her for good, she didn’t even want me to touch her tonight for Christ’s sake. And if she left, she’d be in more danger now than ever.
“Derek” he called and I raised my eyes to meet his “I don’t think anyone has loved another as fiercely as this woman loves you.” He was being truthful, and there was a hint of jealousy. That had to be hard to admit. He’d been married to his wife for over twenty years. “She deserves to know. Could you be with someone who you knew was lying to you for three years?”

A PRAYER FOR MOTHER EARTH
MARCH 28, 2017
I originally penned these words as the Afterword for A MILLION FRAGILE BONES. Ultimately, my publisher Joan Leggitt and I took it out of the book because we didn't feel it was the right fit. However, in light of the Trump Administration's decision to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from enforcing climate change regulations, I feel strongly it is time to publish the piece.
Here it is in its entirety.
This abiding truth is as simple as it is profound: All living creatures are threads in a single tapestry of life. The loss of one species, the anguished deaths of 1,000 dolphins, the slow-oil-agony demise of 800,000 birds affects the entire planet, perhaps even the cosmos. As John Muir said, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” We are enlarged, made better, by a healthy and vibrant Earth. We are not detached beings, divorced from our planet, only operating on the surface as if we’re bullet trains impelled by magnetic force, hovering above but never touching the tracks. We are of the Earth and of the sky. On this, our only home, we share DNA with every living organism. The worm and the butterfly. The gnat and the loon. The wolf and the crab. The whale and the ant. We are, individually and collectively, part of every molecule in our universe for every living creature is, at its essential self, stardust. One glance at the Periodic Table of Elements is a view into the building blocks that sustain and drive the complex lives of stars and every life form on our planet, including humans. Nitrogen or calcium, iron or carbon, chromium or nickel: these elements and more are created at the end of a star’s life when the energy producing nuclear reactions in the star’s heart cease, resulting in gravitational collapse. Perhaps this is the source of our origin story, the leitmotif of sacrifice: We are all sparkling moments of rebirth. But we are also astonishingly effective purveyors of death. We destroy a species, an ecosystem, a pod of dolphins caring for its young, a turtle completing her journey, a rare and mighty collective of whales that have a song like no one else in its genus, and we have effectively driven arrows into the very essence of our humanity. We have diminished our home, the thing that gives us joy, sustenance, life, an inkling of the holy. I have a friend whose hobby is deep-sea diving. She told me she stopped eating fish after she had several dynamic encounters with grouper. She claimed they are very curious, intelligent fish that often swim right up to her and seem to study her. She began making faces at them and the fish made faces back. She said she could no longer eat them because they are sentient beings, animals of intelligence with a range of emotions. Hers is not an act of anthropomorphism but of acute observation and interaction with her known world. If she’d never had those encounters, if she’d never paused long enough to notice what the fish were doing and to risk an interaction, she would have never been moved, changed. She would have continued to exist in an echo chamber of limited experiences. I have no idea how people harm animals, or clear-cut forests, or shear off mountaintops, or through greed-fueled negligence destroy rivers and oceans. In order for humans to slaughter sharks for shark fin soup (they cut off the shark’s dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins, leaving the shark unable to swim, sentencing the animal to a prolonged, horrendous death), I believe they must enter a mindset similar to that of combatants: dehumanize your opponent. But in this case, since the opponent is a non-human animal, I suppose the process would more accurately be labeled de-recognizing. By de-recognizing another living being’s value, it’s easier to kill it. How else could one inflict such cruelty? And what madness causes men to think rhino tusk powder will make them more virile? Perhaps it is the same madness that prompts wealthy American men to travel to Africa and “trophy hunt” (a de-recognizing phrase—the animal is reduced to the status of object—for a killing ritual in which all the cards are stacked in favor of the man with the bait and gun). Somehow, cruelty inspires in these wealthy hunters, some of whom shoot the animals from the sniper-esque advantage of helicopters—a fetish-centered belief in the glory of their phalluses. They de-recognize the world in order to kill it, and for them killing translates into power, control, sex. I am no longer naïve. I understand death is integral, even necessary, to life . . . sparkling moments of rebirth. And that people create religions. And that people fear death. You must sacrifice that goat, that child, that man, that woman in order to appease the gods. Believe this man is the Son of God and you will never truly die. If you live by the Prophet’s rules, you will be given a harem of virgins in heaven (what, I wonder, do the women get?). These are all stories humankind has created in order to make peace with the inevitable black door of death. But they also prevent us from rationally dealing with the science of nature. Life begets death, death begets life. But nature offers balance in the life-death tango. A cyclone spawns off the coast of Africa and eventually makes its way to the American plains where it drops enough water to relieve drought and water crops. When humankind decides to play god, chaos ensues: global climate change, rising sea levels, acid rain, extinct species, cancer epidemics, marginalized nutritional values in our food, and an entire ocean and its inhabitants poisoned. We are living in a time where there is increasing awareness that natural disasters are also social disasters. In an essay titled, “There is No Such Thing as a Natural Disaster,” anthropologist and geographer Neil Smith writes in reference to Hurricane Katrina, “In every phase and aspect of a disaster–causes, vulnerability, preparedness, results and response, and reconstruction–the contours of disaster and the difference between who lives and who dies is to a greater or lesser extent a social calculus.” The same holds true for manmade disasters. The Gulf ecosystem and the people who depend on its health and abundance for their well-being were already stressed due to a panoply of human factors, the most pressing of which were agricultural pollutants, the megalopolis called Atlanta and their mushrooming drinking water supply needs, and the fact that everything runs downstream. As an Alligator Point neighbor once said to me, “Every time someone flushes a toilet in Atlanta, the Gulf dies a little.” Fertilizers and pesticides have affected the Gulf basin since their introduction post World War II. Indeed, one of the enduring legacies of a war that was technologically advanced for its era is the develop[L1] and reliance on chemicals which, while killing pests, also destroy waterways and human health. In order to meet its ever-growing need for fresh drinking water, Atlanta relentlessly draws down the Flint, Chattahoochee, and Apalachicola watershed. This system, when working properly (read: not manipulated by humankind), creates the salinity balance necessary for thriving oyster beds. The proper flow of freshwater provides nutrients to the oysters without which they succumb to illness and predation. But Atlanta, because of its increasing population, has been manipulating the flow for years. As a result, when natural or manmade disasters hit the Gulf region, the oyster beds have an increasingly more difficult time bouncing back. This was the situation when the BP oil spill occurred. The oyster fields were already embattled. So, too, were the people who have for generations made their living off harvesting oysters. This is how a manmade disaster becomes a social disaster: Take away someone’s ability to make a living, especially when the livelihood is intractably tied to a cultural way of life, and everything falls apart—the individual and the community. During the hundreds of hours spent researching material for this book, I discovered a secret. It’s a secret that is beginning to slowly emerge from the shadows in large part because of the Internet. Now what was once a nearly impossible task becomes a matter of keystrokes. I have at my disposal studies, plans, reports, maps, and diagrams detailing vast fields of disposed weaponry piled in watery trash heaps in the Gulf of Mexico. After World War II, without making any ado about it, the military began using the Gulf as a garbage dump for all manner of ordnance. A 2015 article published by Texas A & M University asserts, “The ordinance includes land mines, ocean mines, torpedoes, aerial bombs and several types of chemical weapons . . . . The chemical weapons may have leaked over the decades and could pose a significant environmental problem. The military began dumping the unexploded bombs from 1946 to 1970, when the practice was banned.” And the U.S. Army sent three soldiers to my shack who were charged with digging up non-existent ordnance in my yard and all the while chemical weapons were and are, in all probability, leaking into the Gulf, mixing with petroleum and dispersant, and nothing is being done to address the situation. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Do we not understand that we get one chance to save this planet? And that saving our planet is the very definition of redemption? After experiencing the manmade destruction of my sacred place, I’ve come to understand there are people who apparently don’t possess an empathy gene and, as such, are capable of inflicting massive harm. But ignorance, apathy, and greed are just as dangerous and just as much in play. Glaciers are becoming their own rivers. Extreme weather is rampant. Species are disappearing at a rate that is up to 10,000 times greater than what would happen if humans did not exist. We are creating a period of extinction, what biologists call the sixth great extinction, and it is being primarily propelled by our addiction to fossil fuels. Gas is under three dollars a gallon, prompting a boom in truck sales. What’s next, the return of the dinosaur-sized, hydrocarbon spewing Hummer? The Florida legislature is on the precipice of opening up the entire state to fracking. This is more evidence we have elected people who are insane. Florida is essentially a thin crust of limestone veiling and protecting our lifeblood, the Florida Aquifer. The aquifer is the source of our drinking water and feeds our natural abundance. The aquifer is interconnected. You dump poisons in the north and they will circulate throughout the system. Fracking would bust through the limestone, contaminating the totality of the water table. In a First Amendment-wreaking edict, officials banned Florida Department of Environmental Protection employees from using the phrases “climate change” or “global warming.” Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil, but the facts on the ground don’t change. I am reminded ever more of the Cree prophecy, “When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, you will realize you cannot eat money.” Prior to drilling underwater wells, energy companies conduct studies to pinpoint oil deposits below the ocean floor using sonic cannons. According to Time Magazine, the cannons “emit sound waves louder than a jet engine every ten seconds for weeks at a time.” Common sense and science tells us this is detrimental to marine life. We are stressing our environment—air, water, flora, fauna—to the breaking point. Sometimes I wonder if the rich and powerful won’t be sated until everything is gone: all the sweet water, all the animals, all the good air, all of us . . . you cannot eat money. According to the excellent 2014 documentary on the Gulf oil disaster, The Great Invisible, in the past decade 111 energy bills have been proposed in Congress and only five have become law. Those five contained subsidies for nuclear and fossil fuel energy sources. The 106 bills that did not survive all contained alternative energy provisions. Fact and metaphor: Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons formed from the remains of dead animals and plants that died millions of years ago. Their transformation from corpse to the earth’s hidden blood also took millions of years. Fossil fuels—dead animals and plants that underwent transmogrification—are not renewable. Nearly every aspect of our modern life is fueled with their blood, with the fragile bones of death. As far as I can tell, wind and solar power do not intersect with any blood, ancient or otherwise. And I suspect the same will hold true for marvelous energy sources not yet invented. Life fueled on the remains of a million (and far more) fragile bones is not only unsustainable, it’s killing us. Must we do everything in our power to embrace clean, renewable energy? Resoundingly, yes. What other choice do we have? Our fossil fuel addiction is a form of slow suicide. And with each tick of the clock, our demise speeds up. Tick, tick, tick: closer to the brink. Whoosh. We cannot risk trying to perform CPR on a cadaver. My poor mother tried. It didn’t work. It never does. In Mary Oliver’s poem “Wild Geese,” she writes: You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Let us all, with infinite devotion, love this good earth. Let us understand with greater intimacy the meaning of “home.” Let us love with ever expanding intention and purpose, placing greater faith in nature and science. Let us view our planet and all its moving parts—stars, galaxies, winding rivers—with a shaman’s fierce gaze, a scientist’s deep knowledge, and a child’s open heart. Yes. Let us love enough and more than enough. Now. Today. Forever.

Paranormal Disturbance in Oak Park
Date to be there: January 5, 2019 / Time to be there: 2pm. Address to be at: xxxxxxxxxx Sacramento, CA. Occupant: Ms X. Confidential Investigation. Activity: Daughter being attacked by a demonic force. Daughter sees man in hallway, the man is a dark shadow. The man tells her to hurt herself and tells her many terrible things. Emergency investigation.
Deanna Jaxine Stinson – HPI Co-Owner and Psychic Medium did a walk through. Deanna felt a feeling of sadness. Deanna felt that the daughter that the demonic force is focused on is an empath and there may be another entity trying to relay a message to her. As an empath she is a beacon of light that esoteric entities are attracted to. As an empath a demonic force may be utilizing her energy for its own dark agenda. Later on in the investigation Deanna picked up on a side bed by the bedroom window. Deanna felt that whoever sleeps on that side bed may be receiving nightmares or vivid dreams. Deanna felt we could capture an EVP at this location. We tried a few EVP sessions, no luck, so we decided to go outside of the bedroom window, because Deanna still felt there was something there. I managed to obtain an EVP of a man saying: “what do you want me to say?” Very clear EVP, Class A. Deanna and I, believe there is portal in this area. Oak Park is very old and has a lot of history, some of that history is very negative, such as murders.
Some Negative History in Oak Park In fact the Oak Park Rapist aka Marcus Thomas roamed this area. He is the brother of Miami Vice star Philip Michael Thomas and is serving a 27 year sentence at California Soledad Prison. The fear, pain and horror that the Oak Park Rapist caused, lingers in the atmosphere as residual negative energy. Another monster was the Homicidal Handyman of Oak Park aka Morris Solomon Jr. He was your local serial killer. Deanna picked up on the name Daniel who was addicted to alcohol that was haunting this family. She saw that he wore a 80s style black leather jacket and hung outside close to the bedroom window. Deanna did some research and she did indeed find a Daniel, who was an alcoholic and drug addict. This Daniel died in 2007.
We learned that the daughter is also cutting herself, because the demonic entity is telling her to hurt herself. Deanna felt strong negative energy in the bathroom and then it dawned on us, that the daughter may be cutting herself in the bathroom. We suggested a full submersion baptism (a basic form of exorcism) to get rid of the attachment and the daughter was adamant not to receive a baptism. Deanna conducted a metaphysical cleansing of this home and I conducted a Roman Catholic house blessing. Since the daughter refused the baptism, the entity most likely is still there and the house blessing is a temporary fix. When we were conducting our investigation, we did obtain a far away sounding “no” EVP.
Below is my true encounter of 2 werewolves..read on. What is Lycanthropy you may ask? According to The American Journal of Psychiatry Vol. 134, No. 10. published in October 1977 it states:
“Lycanthropy, a psychosis in which the patient has delusions of being a wild animal (usually a wolf), has been recorded since antiquity. The Book of Daniel describes King Nebuchadnezzar as suffering from depression that deteriorated over a seven-year period into a frank psychosis at which time he imagined himself a wolf. Among the first medical descriptions were those of Paulus Aegineta during the later days of the Roman Empire. In his description of the symptom complex, Aegineta made reference to Greek mythology in which Zeus turned King Lycaon of Arcadia into a raging wolf. Thereafter, references to lycanthropy appeared in the ancient literature. Many medieval theologians envisioned lycanthropy as a consequence of the evil eye.Delusions of being a wolf or some other feared animal are universal and, although rare in the industrialized countries, still occur in China, India, Africa, and Central and South America. The animals in the delusioned transformation include leopards, lions, elephants, crocodiles, sharks, buffalo, eagles, and serpents. Not infrequently, bizarre and chaotic sexuality is expressed in a primitive way through the lycanthropic symptom complex. Patients whose internal fears exceed their coping mechanisms may externalize them via projection and constitute a serious threat to others. Throughout the ages, such individuals have been feared because of their tendencies to commit bestial acts and were themselves hunted and killed by the populace. Many of these people were paranoid schizophrenics.”
Thoughts of werewolf movies may come to your mind from: The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Blood, Bad Moon, The Curse of the Werewolf, Death Moon, Face of the Screaming Werewolf, Teen Wolf, The Wolfman, Project: Metal Beast – DNA Overlord and Ginger Snaps. But, we’re not here to talk about good werewolf horror movies, we are here to talk about two real werewolves! Lolita Moonshadow and Katrina Kanine!
I get a call from Lolita Moonshadow and Katrina Kanine. They are self-proclaimed werewolves. What the? Okay Lolita and Katrina, where can I meet you at? We first met at the Avid Reader at Broadway and crossed the street over to Starbucks for a refreshing frappachino. Lolita and Katrina are cousins, they claim to be of Romanian descent. They claim to have a long history of werewolves in their family. I asked them, how do you know you are werewolves, besides the Romanian descent and thinking your family members are werewolves? They said they both crave raw meat. When a dog, cat or a rabbit crosses their paths, they have the urge to ‘chase’. They feel domination over men, physically and mentally. When the full moon rises, they feel the urge to hunt. They must suppress their dark desires. They said they have a lot of dark desires within their inner souls.
I asked them to elaborate on their dark desires and they asked me if I ever saw An American Werewolf in London and they left it at that. I pondered…do they have the desire to kill? They both feel they have a chemical imbalance during a full moon, but feel they have everything under control. They both showed me their unusual long canines. I don’t know if they were unusually long, or if they stood out more. They said that during a full moon, they get more hair on their arms and legs. They said that they have a keen sense of smell and after they get used to my smell, they would be able to sniff me out a block away.
Katrina took my arm and dug in a bit with her fingernails and looked at me and said…”Paul, I have a hunger!” Okay, okay, just as long as it is not me! We discussed if silver bullets can kill werewolves and they said that a real werewolf can be killed by any bullet, that is a myth. They told me that their eyesight changes over to seeing everything in black and white during a full moon, they feel greater strength and are quite agile. They claim that if they are with their boyfriends during a full moon, their sexual desires are greatly heightened and their boyfriends are not able to handle their wild frenzy. They describe it as throwing a bull carcass in the Amazon river and watching piranhas go into a feeding frenzy. They said that their love life had dwindled, when anytime their lovers discovered the true essence of their beings. They said that last week, their boyfriends left them and they are single again.
At this point of time, I noticed a bead of sweat dripping from my brow. I knew I better end this interview as quickly as I started it. I noticed that Lolita had purchased a werewolf book from Avid Reader. Yes! These girls were truly into lycanthropy. Before, I left, we discussed werewolf sightings in Placerville and the Sierras. They said, that at times they feel a calling for the Sierras to find their brethren. What is so unusual, after I met them, I have been contacted by another werewolf girl in Fremont and I plan to interview her too. She claims that there are werewolf sightings in Antioch. She has a very interesting story to tell also! When I stood up from Starbucks, both were eyeing me strangely and both stood around me, as if they were blocking me from the entrance. Lolita grabbed my shoulder and said…”Paul, remember one thing, doctor up our photo, we do not want to be identified for this article and make sure not to identify us in anyway in this article. We know where you live!” I looked back at Lolita and Katrina and said…”sure, no problem, no problem at all!”
As I left Starbucks, I thought how safer it would be to just hunt ghosts, they don’t make threats! Before I close this article, I met Tanya Filer, a clerk at my local Bel-Air and she told me about an abandoned house in Elk Grove that she wants me to investigate. The house has been abandoned for 7 years, because no one will purchase the home, its reputed to be haunted. The story goes that a builder of the house, killed himself with a nail gun. People who have entered the home, claim that the phantom builder looks at them and is holding a nail gun in his hand. Okay, Tanya, where is this house? I am willing and ready to investigate! As I rode home tonight on the lightrail, Julie Surjan a good friend of mine, who knows I am a ghost hunter, had me all hooked on her story. She said, that a strange thing happened to her last night. She was watching TV and saw something at the corner of her eye, it was dark and black. I asked…”was it a shadow person?” She looks at me and laughs…”no, it was a black widow spider! I had the hardest time killing the thing!”

Romance Novels to Watch for in 2017
Feversong by Karen Marie Moning (1/17): MacKayla Lane and Jericho Barrons return in the epic conclusion to the pulse-pounding Fever series, where a world thrown into chaos grows more treacherous at every turn. As Mac, Barrons, Ryodan, and Jada struggle to restore control, enemies become allies, right and wrong cease to exist, and the lines between life and death, lust and love, disappear completely. Black holes loom menacingly over Dublin, threatening to destroy the earth, yet the greatest danger is the one MacKayla Lane has unleashed from within: The Sinsar Dubh—a sentient book of unthinkable evil—has possessed her body and will stop at nothing in its insatiable quest for power. The fate of Man and Fae rests on destroying the book and recovering the long-lost Song of Making, the sole magic that can repair the fragile fabric of the earth. But to achieve these aims, sidhe-seers, the Nine, Seelie, and Unseelie must form unlikely alliances and make heart-wrenching choices. For Barrons and Jada, this means finding the Seelie queen, who alone can wield the mysterious song, negotiating with a lethal Unseelie prince hell-bent on ruling the Fae courts, and figuring out how to destroy the Sinsar Dubh while keeping Mac alive. This time, there’s no gain without sacrifice, no pursuit without risk, no victory without irrevocable loss. In the battle for Mac’s soul, every decision exacts a tremendous price.

James figured out who masterminded the dastardly plot and is leading a fleet of ships to the West Indies to deliver some Malory-style retribution. More interested in revenge than in finding a husband during her first London Season, Jack is furious that her father left her behind. Then an intriguing stranger leads her and her older brother Jeremy to her mysterious abductor. But instead of capturing him, the Malory siblings wind up as his “ guests” on a ship sailing away from England. As Jack re-engages in a battle of wills with her all too attentive captor, she realizes he is no ordinary pirate, perhaps no pirate at all, but a nobleman determined to settle a score that dates back to the days when her father was known as Captain Hawk—and what endangers her most is the increasingly passionate attraction they feel for each other.

But then his eldest son and sworn enemy, Edward, came forward and confessed to what was, in fact, a murder. Now in police custody, Edward mourns not the disintegration of his family or his loss of freedom . . . but the woman he left behind. His love, Sutton Smythe, is the only person he has ever truly cared about, but as she is the CEO of the Bradford Bourbon Company’s biggest competitor, any relationship between them is impossible. And then there’s the reality of the jail time that Edward is facing. Lane Baldwine was supposed to remain in his role of playboy, forever in his big brother Edward’s shadow. Instead he has become the new head of the family and the company. Convinced that Edward is covering for someone else, Lane and his true love, Lizzie King, go on the trail of a killer—only to discover a secret that is as devastating as it is game-changing.
