Seconding Siren Queen, it's really good! I'd also recommend Orphan #8 by Kim van Alkemade and Miranda in Milan by Katharine Duckett (which also has some fantasy in it--it's sort of a Tempest retelling).
Recommendations for historical fiction with wlw, please? Preferably not a straight up romance. Just a good story with a wlw relationship or at least hints that could lead to that. Thanks.
PS: I am aware of Sarah Waters' books.

Miranda in Milan by Katharine Duckett
With Miranda in Milan, debut author Katharine Duckett reimagines the consequences of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, casting Miranda into a Milanese pit of vipers and building a queer love story that lifts off the page in whirlwinds of feeling.
After the tempest, after the reunion, after her father drowned his books, Miranda was meant to enter a brave new world. Naples awaited her, and Ferdinand, and a throne. Instead she finds herself in Milan, in her father’s castle, surrounded by hostile servants who treat her like a ghost. Whispers cling to her like spiderwebs, whispers that carry her dead mother’s name. And though he promised to give away his power, Milan is once again contorting around Prospero’s dark arts.
With only Dorothea, her sole companion and confidant to aid her, Miranda must cut through the mystery and find the truth about her father, her mother, and herself.
Pre-orders going on now. Comes out March 26, 2019.

Top Ten Tuesday | The best books of 2019 (so far!)
Tumblr media
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted at That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week you compile a list of ten books which coincide with that week’s theme. You can find everything you need to know about joining in here!
This week’s theme is all about our childhood favourites, but I have a feeling this is a topic I’ve done once or twice before and I don’t think my answers would be any different, so…

#ReadShortStories (46 to 50)
The milestone of reaching 50 short stories read for the year comes just as I begin my Hugo reading, with story number fifty coming from the short story shortlist. If you would like to join me in reading the Hugo nominated fiction (or non-fiction etc) then I draw your attention to this post on File 770, which goes through the short list and directs you to where you can read/watch/listen to everything for free or, at least, read an excerpt or watch a trailer. Internal Investigations by Naomi Alderman — This story was interesting in so far as it looked at hacking the mind/body, but not exceptionally original in doing so. It was well written enough to be enjoyable and creepy, which counts for a lot. Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00pbgrk
The Frequency of Compassion by A. Merc Rustad — There were too many very wrong throwaway statements about space/physics for me to enjoy this story. For me they overshadowed what was otherwise a nice story about an agender and neuroatypical protagonist making first contact at the edge of the solar system. Source: https://uncannymagazine.com/article/the-frequency-of-compassion/ The Stars Above by Katharine Duckett — An excellent story, my favourite in the issue so far. A small Kazakhstani village returns to nomadism and living off the grid after aliens invade. The protagonist being a foreigner worked well for the outsider view and the links to family back in the US. Source: https://uncannymagazine.com/article/the-stars-above/ The Things I Miss the Most by Nisi Shawl — An unexpected story essentially about a hallucination generated by a futuristic treatment for seizures. I found it touching and difficult to have a single opinion on, in a good way. Source: https://uncannymagazine.com/article/the-things-i-miss-the-most/ The Rose MacGregor Drinking and Admiration Society by T. Kingfisher — An amusing story about the tables turning on a group of fairies who usually get their way and enjoy leaving humans to pine after them. Short and sweet. Source: https://uncannymagazine.com/article/the-rose-macgregor-drinking-and-admiration-society/ Content imported from Blogger https://ift.tt/2OLOwiF. was tagged by the lovely @goosemixtapes to post my top 9 books of the year (sorted roughly in order of preference and then a whole shelf of That’s Just The Tempest, Oh My God)
1. everyone in this room will someday be dead by emily austin is a fantastic, terribly relatable portrait of a very anxious young woman who’s taken a job as a receptionist at a catholic church despite being a lesbian atheist. high-key recommend.
2. all’s well by mona awad is a super jaded professor trying to keep a theatre minor afloat with a production of all’s well that ends well, and it’s great
3. brutus and other heroines is a really insightful read by harriet walter about playing shakespeare’s women, and later shakespeare’s men. it’s half acting manual and half memoir (more like 70-30, honestly) and it’s so compelling btu only if you have my brainrot
4. who is vera kelly is a FANTASTIC spy novel and i didn’t think i would, yknow, enjoy a spy novel but i do. what a good quick read to enjoy while on a 3 hour bus ride anxiously awaiting an upcoming terrible conversation!
5. unholy by diane flacks is a play about four women debating religion (two for, two against) and i bought it so i’d have a reason to email diane flacks again after i met her in a playwriting thing and then i didn’t so. it’s a good play FHVHDSF
6. the dog the night and the knife is a play obscure enough i couldnt find an actual cover for it in 15 seconds of googling. i had to design for this for a school application (i did not get in!) but i really enjoyed just how Bonkers it is. also i love when eating/not eating someone is, like, metaphorical for love in weird surrealist shit so.
7. hag-seed by margaret atwood. look i reread this still in the throes of my tempesting and oh my god is it just fantastic. i do think about it. ms atwood you were right about that one
8. miranda in milan is for people who read tempest and went ‘hm. needs more lesbians, and i want prospero to Fucking Die’ (me). it’s for me. thank you katharine duckett
9. the tempest is the play i did this year i could never Not include it. i got to have my lesbian prince gender <3 shakespeare you did not really go off with the colonialism but some of the words are still good
tagging. uh. @ardenrosegarden @lazarusemma @sofyarostova @flora-like-the-fairy @brechtian n anyone else inch rested i am sorry i am tired

Note
i just finished reading the poppy war after i heard about it being based off azula/dark atla on drugs; im likely gonna continue the series and finish it, but in the meantime do you have any other book recommendations? of any genre, really
I have a lot of book recs, actually. It really is easier if I kind of know what you’re looking for. Although recently, I’ve been really trying to read books with main characters who are non-white, queer, women (cis or trans) or nb, or some combination thereof. I have just basically gotten completely tired of “cis, white dude protagonist”.
But here’s a random sampling:
Ngan, Natasha. Girls of Paper and Fire - why we need to smash the patriarchy in fantasy Southeast Asia with demons (book 1 of 3)
Gladstone, Max  Empress of Forever  - Journey to the West...IN SPACE
Wexler, Django Ship of Smoke and Steel -  teenage guttersnipe needs to take over eldritch ship. GIANT ENEMY CRAB (book 1 of 3)
Medows, Foz An Accident of Stars - teenager trips into another world, reality ensues (book 1 of 2)
Yee, F.C. The Epic Crush of Genie Lo  - teenage girl meets Sun Wukong, finds out she's a reincarnation from Journey to the West, punches things (book 1 of series?)
Vo, Nghi The Empress of Salt and Fortune - in which a girl sent south as a hostage carves a kingdom with the other invisible and disposable women
Mandanna, Sangu A Spark of White Fire - genderswappend The Mahābhārata IN SPACE (book 1 of 3)
Duckett, Katharine Miranda in Milan -  for the love of god, someone please give Miranda from The Tempest some actual agency...okay ontological mystery works too
Toukuda-Hall, Maggie The Mermaid, The Witch, and the Sea - lady off to be married encounters gender-conflicting pirate, oh shit try not to die
