Review : Sorry To Bother You (2018)

Ever since The Coup released Genocide and Juice in 1994, I knew that Boots Riley was someone to keep an eye on.  With his distinct look, his slick personality, and his Mark Twain-esque ability to tell vivid tales, he stood out in a landscape full of classic talent.  After a career of ups and downs, including being directly tied to controversy in the fallout of 9/11, however, Boots has persevered, continuing to make music to this day, and evolving into a more well rounded creator.  2018 brings his debut film offering, the entirely unique and enjoyable Sorry To Bother You. 

In an alternate present day Oakland, Cash (Lakeith Stanfield) is doing all that he can to sustain a living for himself and his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson).  He is living in his Uncle Sergio’s (Terry Crews) garage, is four months late on rent, and is on the verge of causing an eviction for his uncle, who is considering joining the WorryFree community of laborers given free (albeit extremely insufficient) housing.  As a last ditch effort, Cash secures a job at RegalView, a telemarketing firm all about big numbers.  Upon hire, Cash is promised the chance to make the big bucks by being promoted to Power Caller, and via a golden tip from coworker Langston (Danny Glover), is given the key to success : using his white voice.  As Cash finds success via his white voice, coworker Squeeze (Steven Yuen) and good friend Salvador (Jermaine Fowler), along with Langston and the recently hired Detroit, organize a union-based strike in an effort to earn increased wages for all.  On the day of the strike, however, Cash is promoted to Power Caller, much to the dismay of those close to him.  As Cash is introduced to the mysterious Mr. _____ (Omari Hardwick), WorryFree creator Steve Lift (Armie Hammer), and a world he cannot possibly prepare for, his morals and his dedication to those close to him are put into question and on the line.

Immediately after this film, some friends and I had an interesting converstation on how Sorry To Bother You fits into the spectrum of modern day social commentary on the black experience.  Similar to a film like Get Out, Sorry To Bother You uses a loose science fiction framework to present often glossed over issues with biting truth and pinpoint, albeit absurd, accuracy.  In the case of Sorry To Bother You, the main issues addressed are an inability to be true to yourself and succeed in tandem with economic status leading to normal people having to take drastic measures to survive, in effect enslaving themselves to a systematic reduction of the lower class.

Not only does the sci-fi veneer provide room for direct examination, the film is full of surreal humor that is full of confidence as it helps break up the edgier material.  In particular, the character of Salvador provides some Marx Brothers level reflective humor, including a hilariously obvious phonetic observation of Diana DeBauchery’s (Kate Berlant) name.  The sci-fi element (which I will not go into detail about, in order not to spoil for first-time viewers) gives a direct in-world parallel for the symbolic connections we are making as viewers.  

Most of the humor, as well as the emotionally charged content, is rooted in philosophical ruminations on identity.  Cash carries a burden of identity in the face of eternity, falling into the Albert Camus style of protagonist motivated by a sudden talent that shows real results and garners him respect, at the sacrifice of losing his true self.  Detroit finds respect in value systems, specifically where one stands in the face of what is clearly unjust.  Squeeze is a moral Robin Hood, helping organize the poor to collectively steal from the rich, as well as hoping to be identified as valued in the eyes of Detroit.  Even the Power Callers exude literal power trips over the identities of those under them, toying with human lives in extremely grotesque and exploitive ways.

As a first time director, Boots Riley is showing a wonderful array of skills and influences to create a refreshing film language that is equally as new as it is familiar (at the risk of cliche statements).  His color palette is vivid, his tools for connecting characters in different locations is not only economical, but wonderfully surreal, and his ability to use a wide range of humor and emotional tones in the writing only further solidified the prowess.  The ending alone shows that Boots Riley is wholly unafraid to explore the deepest, darkest and most disturbing depths of where his creative journeys take him. 

Lakeith Stanfield continues to bring value to his brand by knowing when to play intensely reserved versus wholly infectious in terms of character and personality.  Tessa Thompson cuts through her over the top (in the best way) costuming with a mainline of emotional intensity that propels much of the story forward.  Steven Yuen makes a wonderful transition into film, dropping some of the most expressive reactions while simultaneously keeping up the pace in terms of overall cast humor.  Jermaine Fowler and his oddball choices keep genuine laughs coming, with equally solid oddball laughs coming from Kate Berlant.  Brief appearances from Terry Crews, Danny Glover and Armie Hammer are all hilarious.  Omari Hardwick takes command of his over the top character, dropping intrigue into the ridiculousness.  Top notch voiceover work is presented from David Cross, Patton Oswalt and Lily James.  Voice cameos from Rosairo Dawson and Forest Whitaker are also nice touches.  

It’s refreshing to see my hip-hop heroes make good on the promise they showed as young creators.  Watching the journey of Boots Riley take unexpected twists and turns has been truly rewarding, and it seems far from over at this point.
