Gouge Away Reveal “Newtau” Music Video
Photo by Kat Nijmeddin Six months after the release of their third full-length LP Deep Sage, Gouge Away have shared a music video for the album’s standout track, “Newtau.” The video was a true DIY project by the band, shot digitally using a Nikon D5200 and then transferred to Kodak 16mm Tri-X film. It was filmed by Thomas Cantwell, Dylan Downey and Christina Michelle. Michelle handled…

Amazing music photographers around the world
We’re currently facing a world crisis unlike we have seen in a generation. Due to shutdowns of pretty much all normal life, the music industry has completely shutdown touring. Festivals and tours all over the world have been cancelled, and the loss of income to all of those connected to that industry will be devastating.
This is my very small attempt at trying to help out some of my favourite photographers, nearly all of whom are affected by these shutdowns. I’ve tried my best to link to all their print stores, instagram and websites, but if there are direct ways you want to help them, please reach out. Give them a follow. Share their posts. Tell them how amazing they are. Spirits are low right now, and boosting someone’s spirits is one of the best things we can do to get through this.
We’re all in this together. I hope you discover your new favourite photographer.
UK/EU
Bethan Miller // Cardiff, UK
Bethan Miller is a Cardiff based photographer who works within music, event and wedding photography. I’ve followed Bethan’s work for years, and seeing her come as far as she has, and being a full-time freelancer is incredible. She tours regularly with rising UK band Holding Absence, and her work with them truly captures their moody-vibe. PRINT STORE // INSTAGRAM // WEBSITE
Corinne Cumming // London, UK
Best known as ‘Captured by Corinne’, one of the music industry’s NICEST humans on the planet, London based Corinne is also an incredible photographer, from her work with Rock Sound with some of your favourite bands, to her unmatched stunning studio work with Drag Queens. I feel so proud when I see her work - we would often share the pit together when we were newbies and now she’s a full-time photographer and owner of her own studio, Hot Dog Studios.
INSTAGRAM // WEBSITE
Isha Shah // London, UK
Honestly, a true legend. Isha’s work is so vibrant, innovative and quite genius. She’s able to work with a range of artists and musicians, and also inspires other creatives with her creative collective, Platform London. Never afraid to speak up, Isha’s no BS attitude makes her so unique, and honestly my feeds would be way too quiet without her.

Jennifer McCord // London, UK
Finding beauty in the minimal, Jenny’s work is emotive in the way she photographs some of the most delicate moments, no matter whether she’s shooting live music, portraits or weddings. Seeing her grow from shooting hardcore shows to working with Ellie Goulding, Jenny is IN DEMAND, and there’s a reason why.

Phoebe Fox // London, UK
It blows me away that Phoebe (SHOTBYPHOX) is only 22. She has toured with artists such as Anne Marie, SWMRS, Anteros and The Amazons and is a powerhouse of beautiful content. Her work is clean, bold, and simply stunning.

Zac Mahrouche // London, UK
Zac shoots a lot of live music, but also creates some really beautiful editorial/fashion photos. I can always look to Zac’s work for inspiration, and I love the way he presents his work across socials.

The moody cold tones of Doug’s work make it really atmospheric and cinematic. It’s been amazing to follow Doug’s journey over the years and see him work with artists such as Against The Current.

One of the most unique viewpoints in music photography come from Gingerdope. She captures some of the most delicate, overlooked moments on tour, and has introduced me to some of the UK’s best indie bands.

Brandynnleigh // Calgary, AB
One of THE most creative photographers out there, I love the concepts and essence of her work; there’s a story within every photo and there’s a vintage feel to them that works perfectly. Brandynnleigh is based in Calgary and shoots live music as well as portraits, conceptual projects and landscapes.

Lindsey Blane // Vancouver, BC
Ok, I’m biased, because Lindsey is one of my closest friends but also a ridiculously talented human, a bit of a workaholic and someone who gives every project 110%. When we met, we were both working at a camera store (in different locations) and she stalked me on Instagram and messaged me on Christmas Day 2016, and within weeks she was sleeping on my sofa a couple times a month, so she could come over to Vancouver from Victoria and shoot some shows/build her relationships with artists. It’s paid off and seeing her work with some of the biggest artists in Canada is mindblowing.

Brandon Dacosta // Toronto, ON
Brandon works with a range of indie artists including Canadian bands Bearings and Belmont. His work is so energetic and he checks off everything live music photography is all about. Brandon always delivers stunning content, and as a photographer who tours so much, he will need as much support as possible!

Shayla Lee // Edmonton, AB
A multi-talented incredible human, Shayla has continued to develop her own unique style and approach to her work, particular with electronic and EDM acts. We were introduced by Lindsey Blane (she threw us all in a car and took us to Bumbershoot) and have been great friends since. Shayla is also a writer and runs her own blog, Femme Riot. She attends more festivals than I knew existed and creates weird and wonderful photos/collages.

Timothy Nguyen // Vancouver, BC
One of the most humble, kind humans I’ve had the pleasure of calling my friend. Having road-tripped down to Seattle for Warped Tour and Bumbershoot, Tim is always so much fun to be around, and you can always lean on him for advice. An amazing photographer with a big heart, you’ll see him catching no sleep and shooting 5 gigs in one night.

Kelli Anne // Vancouver, BC
My favourite Kiwi, and potentially one of the funniest people I know, Kelli has come a long way since she started taking photos on her phone at concerts. She is now one of the most consistent live music photographers, continuously producing incredible content. Her portrait work is always STUNNING and I’m jealous of how she achieves those warm dreamy tones.

Weekend Picks: 1/31 - 2/2
Drug Church; Photo by Kat Nijmeddin
BY JORDAN MAINZER
A lot of jazz, a lot of post-hardcore, a little dada surrealism.
Note: I’m including the should-be-a-national-holiday post-Super Bowl Monday as part of the “weekend,” though I’m not recommending any shows for that day.
1/31: AACM with Mike Reed, Logan Center for the Arts
The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) plays tomorrow night with The Outer Realm, which consists of drummer Mike Reed, cellist Tomeka Reid, and bassist Joshua Abrams. Saxophonist Darius Jones is a special guest. It’s a free show, so show up early!
1/31: Thrice, mewithoutYou, & Drug Church, Concord
Irvine rock band Thrice is currently on tour to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their 2005 album Vheissu, which represented a shift for them from fast, distorted post-hardcore to electronic- and keyboard-addled experimentalism. While they’d return to a grungier sound on landmarks like 2011′s Major/Minor and simplify their songwriting on their most recent full-length, 2018′s ballad-heavy Palms, Vheissu is nonetheless a unique entry in the band’s discography.
We previewed Phliadelphia rock band mewithoutYou’s show at Lincoln Hall late in 2018:
“The best part of Philadelphia’s mewithoutyou is that they’re impossible to describe, fitting in a unique place somewhere among indie rock, post rock, punk, and post hardcore. Their recent releases, an album and an EP both untitled, were recorded in the wake of frontman Aaron Weiss’s newfound family life and move to Idaho and additional musicians. The album is expansive, as evidenced by heartland emo track 'Winter Solstice’ and frigid 'Wendy & Betsy’, and urgent, as on chugging opener '9:27 a.m., 7/29’. Tomorrow night, the band will play heavily from their new records as well as classics like Catch Us For The Foxes, Brother, Sister, and Ten Stories.”
The band announced via Twitter last October that this year would be their final year as an active band, so they’re not to miss.
The most recent album from Albany post-hardcore band Drug Church, Cheer, was one of our favorites of 2018. Last week, to celebrate their current tour with Thrice and mewithoutYou, they released a new song, “Bliss Out”, recorded during the Cheer sessions. As such, it would have found itself at home on that record, but why mess with perfection? Expect to hear it along with Cheer songs and older material in a likely short set.
1/31: Makaya McCraven, Symphony Center
Tomorrow night, drummer and band leader Makaya McCraven makes his Symphony Center debut with In These Times, a piece originally commissioned by and performed at the Walker Art Center, performed at Utretch festival Le Guess Who? last year. Tomorrow night’s program will be announced from the stage, but it’s certain to feature, along with McCraven, guitarist Matt Gold, trumpeter Marquis Hill, bassist Junius Paul, saxophonist Greg Ward, and harpist Brandee Younger, as well as appearances by violinists Macie Stewart and Marta Honer, violist Zara Zaharieva, cellist Lia Kohl, and pianist Greg Spero. Oh, and Kim Alpert’s gonna provide visuals!
2/2: SQÜRL with Films by Man Ray, Art Institute of Chicago
The band consisting of acclaimed filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and multi-instrumentalist Carter Logan will perform a semi-improvised ambient live score of loops, analogue synths, and effected guitars to 4 of Man Ray’s silent films: L’Etoile De Mer (1928), Emak Bakia (1926), Retour a la Raison (1923), and Les Mysteres Du Chateau Du De (1929), in that order.
SQÜRL also has a new record, Some Music for Robby Miller, out today on Sacred Bones. It’s a score to Claire Pijman’s documentary Living The Light, about Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller.

Photographer Spotlight: Take In Live Photo Tips and Tricks From Joe Calixto
If a photo is worth a thousand words, what about the person who took that photo? In a day and age where, thanks to Instagram, everyone thinks they’re a professional photographer, it’s important to remember the people who actually do this for a living.
People like Joe Calixto -– the LA native, hardcore-loving photo taker who has shot bands like Glassjaw, Turnstile, Bane, Have Heart and many more.
Today, in a time where all we have are photos to remember some of our favorite shows by (since no one can attend any at the moment), we’d like to take a second and shine a light on the hard working people who took them.
So to learn a little more about Joe Calixto plus some advice on live photography, be sure to check out our newest installment of our Photographer Spotlight series below. Afterward, make sure to follow Joe on Instagram here.
Who or what got you into concert photography? I don't think anyone got me into concert photography but my cousin was the reason I picked up a camera. He was in the Australian army and he came to visit us in the Philippines and brought the very first DSLR I've ever seen. I just wanted to take pictures of my friends skateboarding and playing shows. So, I guess if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here. Thanks, kuya!
What was the first show you ever shot? The first show I ever shot (here in America) was a showcase my cousin's band played. It was at the Cobalt Cafe in Canoga Park, CA. They played Brand New covers. It was kinda cool tbh.
The first actual show I shot with press credentials was the Taste of Chaos tour in 2009. Thursday headlined and there was no way I was gonna pass on a chance to shoot them! No sir!
What was your first touring experience like and who did you shoot for? The first tour I did was a full U.S. tour with my band. I actually didn't take as many photos as I wanted to then. It was actually not til 2016 when I toured with some friends of mine in Silver Snakes on a Bring Me The Horizon tour that I experienced touring where I just focused on photos and selling merch. That shit was so much fun. Every tour was fun... work but keep it fun.
What's your preferred camera setup? I currently shoot with a Canon 6D and a Canon 17-40mm and I have a Tamron 70-300mm as my Tele (got it on the cheap). But it's always a handy wide and a decent zoom. Nothing too crazy.
For young photographers who are still learning, what’s your time management like or the schedule you give yourself day-to-day while shooting? I absolutely hate back-logging, I almost instantly work on all my shit the moment I get home. I legit lose interest on them the more I lag on photos, so I just dive in right away. I do like editing, so that's cool. But do take breaks, don't burn yourself out. Just get the wheel rolling, you feel me?
Any other tips for future concert photographers? I tell this to absolutely anyone who's asked me this question. JUST HAVE FUN OUT THERE. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having the time of your life while shooting a show. As much as you're there for a job, you can still be professional and have a blast. Definitely makes things less stressful. And for people who think being a concert photographer isn't stressful, you're dead-ass wrong! The pressure of capturing images is gnarly in that pit. But yeah, just have fun, enjoy what you do!
Personally, who are some of your favorite concert photographers? I always love this question because I get to introduce the world to some of my favorite photographers out there! So if you haven't, please check out the work of these amazing and talented people:
Erica Lauren, Becca Lader, Furn Zavala, Kiabad Meza, Gabe Baccera, Ron Yamasaki, Danielle Parsons, Nate Zoeller, Hiro Ituo, Courtney Coles, Tyler Ross, Joseph Ipatzi, Josh Vega, Kat Nijmeddin, Dan Rawe, Senny Mau, Katy Viola, Lupe Bustos, Joe Ortega, Abbie Shipperley, Josi Hoffmann, Courtney Kiara, Alexander Bemis, Krissy Marie, Nat Wood, Anam Merchant, Tim Chisham, Madison Stern, Farrah Skeiky, Georgia Rawson, Jesus Martinez, Reid Haithcock, Alyson Colleta, Tim Cayem, Atiba Jefferson, Nina Sandejas, Ryan Russell, Mitchell Wojcik, there’s so many more but these people here blow my mind each time!
I'm gonna actually also mention these people cause video is also a key part of concert documenting, Steven (197 media), Sunny (Hate5six), JAR (workofJAR), Jonathan (JVPhotovideo), Cameron Nunez and Chris Avis (CAVIS FOREVER).
Lastly, who's your dream artist to shoot?
It used to be Deftones but I already shot them and it was awesome. So, I would say it would be a dream to photograph Slipknot and/or Incubus -- oh and/or the Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, Counting Crows or Lisa Loeb would be sick too!

Photographer Spotlight: Explore Live Concert Photography With Erica Lauren
If a photo is worth a thousand words, what about the person who took that photo? In a day and age where, thanks to Instagram, everyone thinks they’re a professional photographer, it’s important to remember the people who actually do this for a living.
People like Erica Lauren -– the do-it-yourself punk rocker who has shot for countless bands like Bad Religion, AFI, Slipknot and more.
Today, in a time where all we have are photos to remember some of our favorite shows by (since no one can attend any at the moment), we’d like to take a second and shine a light on the hard working people who took them.
So to learn a little more about Erica Lauren plus some advice on live photography, be sure to check out our newest installment of our Photographer Spotlight series below. Afterward, make sure to follow Erica on Instagram here.
Who or what got you into concert photography?
Before I started shooting shows, I was taking pictures every day on disposable cameras in high school. Naturally from there, I started bringing cameras with me to all the shows I went to. It was basically a happy accident.
What was the first show you ever shot?
The first show with a very cheap film camera was The Virus at The Glasshouse. My first DSLR at a bigger show was Billy Talent with Thursday.
What was your first touring experience like and who did you shoot for?
My first touring experience was with AJJ and Chris Farren maybe 4 years ago. I [hopped] in the van right from Fest in Gainesville. They are the best people and always make me feel at home.
What's your preferred camera setup?
Usually my Canon 6d 24-70mm 2.8.
For young photographers who are still learning, what’s your time management like or the schedule you give yourself day-to-day while shooting?
For shows, I usually edit as soon as I get home regardless of turn around time. If touring, it depends on what you agreed to with the band but again, I edit live images as soon as possible. I just drink a lot of coffee and sleep once my work is finished.
Any other tips for future concert photographers?
Find your own style of shooting and editing and keep doing it. Trends will come and go, but ultimately, your eye and aesthetic are your voice in photography.
Personally, who are some of your favorite concert photographers?
Growing up I admired Edward Colver, Roberta Bayley, Jim Marshall and BJ Papas. Now I’m mostly inspired by my friends like Courtney Coles, Amanda Fotes, Angela Owens, Farrah Skeiky, Carly Hoskins, Kat Nijmeddin -- the list goes on...
Lastly, who's your dream artist to shoot?
The dream is to tour as Rancid’s photographer. I’ve shot them a few times live but would love to capture candidate and portraits of them. They’ve been one of my favorite bands since I was 13/14.

Noise Exclusive: Celebrate 15 Years of Hawthorne Heights with Their New Music Video And Tour Announcement
Where were you 15 years ago? For most of you, we imagine you were on Myspace rearranging your Top 8, checking your photo comments and changing your profile song from Usher’s “My Boo” to the newfound “screamo” band Hawthorne Heights and their game-changing track “Ohio Is For Lovers.”
See, in case you forgot, 2004 was pretty much the year things took off for “scene” culture with teenage angst soundtracks such as Senses Fail’s Let It Enfold You, Taking Back Sunday’s Where You Want To Be, The Used’s In Love And Death, and of course, Hawthorne Height’s smash breakout debut The Silence In Black And White.
Now that nearly two decades have passed since the release of their beloved album, JT Woodruff and company are looking to celebrate the memories with a special 15-year-anniversary tour featuring longtime friends Emery and, on select dates, Oh, Sleeper.
Talking about the sure-to-be-nostalgic upcoming trek which just added dates on the West Coast, Woodruff shared his excitement with The Noise saying, “We played our first ever show in California with Emery in the summer of 2004, so it just felt right to add some dates over on the best coast. Our fans out there have been some of the strongest throughout the years, so we really felt like we need to play this album for them again.”
Woodruff went on to add, “Staying together for 15 years is quite an accomplishment for a band from a tiny town in Ohio, so we are trying to make it last forever. Our fans have been so wonderful and that is what matters to us most...so we need to try to play as many dates in our favorite cities as possible. It’s going to be a magical night of memories and friendship. I hope our fans wear their old shirts and really make a night of it. Of course, we couldn’t forget our favorite cities in Texas, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. We are trying to pack it all into such a tiny timeframe, which means no off days, and all fun. Can’t wait to see everyone and let it rip.”
In addition to adding West Coast dates to their can’t miss 15-year-anniversary tour, Hawthorne Heights has also premiered a brand new music video for their Bad Frequencies track “Starlighter (Echo, Utah).”
Talking about the new video, which once again shows Woodruff’s love for all things California, he says, "Since this song is about how much I hate winter, I really wanted to film footage of some of our favorite fans in California having fun. I want to run as far as I can from that snowy night in Echo, Utah...and I always want to run back to California anyway. The song is about having no regrets and always looking forward to the next stop in your life. Crank it up and stay out of the snow. Palm trees forever.”
To check out Hawthorne Heights’ brand new music video to get you ready for their highly anticipated summer tour which will also see Emery celebrate 15 years of The Weak’s End, be sure to look below. Afterward, to grab tickets to see the band, head here.
