Why do you think the Euphoria fandom's most popular characters/ship is Lexi Howard & Fezco (Fexi)? They're not one of the main ships featured on the show, like Rue and Jules. And while many fans clearly identify with Lexi, who is intelligent, dedicated, caring and passionate, I wonder why (especially amongst fellow fanfic writers) Kat Hernandez, who writes fanfiction and has a secret double life on the internet, isn't more popular in the Euphoria fandom, or featured more prominently in fanfic.

Oh, this is an interesting ask! I’ve actually thought a lot about why I’m still so enamored by these two, and I think there’s a combination of things that made so many of us fall so hard for them.

One thing is that they were a lot of people’s favorite’s characters individually. Fez is the drug dealer with a difficult past and a heart of gold. Lexi is the relatable writer with a vivid imagination who’s overlooked by her friends and family. They’re two of the most sensible, down to earth, genuinely kind characters on a pretty dark, chaotic show and that makes them easy and fun to root for.

Another thing, and probably the most important one, is that all of their interactions were absolutely flawless. Every single line of dialogue gave me butterflies, their body language made me swoon, their chemistry is simply unmatched and I think they altered our collective brain chemistry forever. The connection they found in each other felt so unexpected, but so genuine and sweet—which was a delightful breath of fresh air. They were just two shy, kind of awkward teenagers falling in love and it was a beautiful thing to watch.

There’s also the fact that they fit so many tropes people love (good girl/bad boy, opposites attract etc.) while subverting them in really satisfying ways at the same time. Sure Fez is ‘bad’ 'cause he sells drugs and beats people up, but he’s also one of the sweetest, most caring people on the show, and Lexi is ‘good’, but she is a lot more than that, so much more complex. They both have many of those famous layers to peel back, and they compliment and contrast each other in ways that I personally find endlessly fascinating to explore.

As for them not having a lot of screen time, I actually think that’s contributed to us being blessed with so many amazing and creative fics, not hindered it. Having so little to go on, means we have so much to fill in, so much to imagine, so many scenarios to explore in our writing. How did the phone calls start? What happened after the store scene? How often did they hang out? How does Lexi find out about the raid? Where do they go from there? There’s nothing like unanswered question to fuel your desire to write something that answers them, I think. Personally, I’d never been in a fandom, written or even read fic before. But after 5 minutes of Fexi I was all over tumblr, signing up for AO3 and typing furiously in three different google docs. I’m still not entirely sure why, but Fexi were a rush unlike anything and I can’t wait to have them back, I miss them! As for Kat, I really don't know. She was one of my favorite characters in s1, more so than Lexi or Fezco, but I think a lot of writers prefer to write about ships, and even though her and Ethan were sweet (I mean that scene at winter formal? Heart eyes!) I always found Ethan a little bland (sorry). Add what they did with her character in s2 and knowing she won't be back, I'm not that surprised people don't have a lot of motivation to write Kat-centric fics at the moment.

I think Fexi is the healthies of all the ships. There's the very sweet and awkward girl and you have a "bad boy" with a heart of gold. This shit writes itself. I think they knew people would love them but maybe not to this extent but well fandom can get real crazy we know that. They are both very beloved characters and people want them to be happy.

With Kat we have to split s1 and s2. I saw a lot of love for her in S1 and I personally loved her too. She got a lot less screentime in s2 and a shit storyline which made her look really bad. I disconnected from her completely. It's a bummer cause her character had so much potential.

So I’m nowhere near the expert on this matter but if I had to guess, there are a few reasons

1) As you said, many people identify to Lexi (I mean I IDENTIFY to Lexi)

2) Fez is clearly a fan favorite, but he’s also very sweet with Lexi, he listens to her, he sees her, and I guess all the viewers who identify with Lexi were immediately charmed by this. Also the ‘opposites attract’ trope may be old news but hey it always works 😌

3) concerning Kat, I think the reason she is not as liked as Lexi despite being a tumblr girly *one of us* has to do with the absolute shitty way she was written in season 2. It was so bad it made Barbie leave the show. Which is too bad because her storyline was very compelling in s1 but they really fucked up her character is s2

a friendship between Kat Hernandez and Jules Vaughn.

Kat and Jules are both going through their own kind of transformations in regards to their sexuality, relationships, acceptance of love and their shared impulse to isolate/runaway from intimacy outside of meaningless sex. they both went through periods of using their sexuality to get affirmation, for Jules it was in her femininity and for Kat it served her by allowing her to have dominance over the same kinds of men that had rejected her/ignored her and for both Jules and Kat it was a way for them to take back their power from men that shamed them by making both girls feel hatred towards their bodies for so long. Neither of them as far as we’ve seen on the show have ever been in a loving romantic relationship, which is why when Jules finds herself on an emotional roller coaster with Rue and Ethan confesses about his ongoing feelings towards Kat both of them visibly want to run.

To me it seems almost in black and white that Jules is in love with Rue, the way she instantly takes to her is shown from all the intimate snuggles we see. Rue is completely infatuated with Jules from day one and would almost do anything for her (threatening Nate Jacobs, nearly running away to the city with Jules, etc). their relationship is soft and giving and very very fragile. Jules has gone from dangerous sexual encounters with older men in an attempt to help her self esteem to actually facing her queerness and experiencing an equal relationship with someone for the first time ever. Keep in mind this is all before Jules has even had the chance to healthily explore her sexuality herself, I think that from Jules’ heartbreaking childhood (her mum admitting her to a mental health unit while Jules goes through depressives and self harms) a lot of her childhood was taken away. She would’ve been dealing with her gender identity and transitioning, I think a lot of euphoria’s fandom doesn’t take into account that Jules is delicate too. her entire life has been in a constant chokehold of pressures and expectations for herself, and she never really had the experience of being young and careless. It speaks through her soft but bright and playful wardrobe and makeup, her mannerisms and her ambitious nature that lands her back on a train to New York. Jules’ emotional response to pain is to run (isolate in her room, avoid Rue, find an escape through meaningless hookups, get uncharacteristically drunk at the Halloween party, etc) I’d really like to see her deal with coming back from New York and coming to terms with what she wants and needs. I want to see her in S2 exploring her newfound queerness in a healthy way with people her age (yeah that’s you Anna) and eventually facing Rue and starting to try and openly communicate, but I think Jules needs another best friend to help her navigate this and who better than Kat Hernandez.

Ethan made it clear he was already taken with Kat before her dominatrix wardrobe and angsty one liners, and when he goes down on Kat in the Halloween episode it’s the first time we’ve seen a guy actually try to make her just feel good and after Kat is nowhere to be found. It’s in the finale that Ethan tells Kat how he feels saying “Is one of us going to get hurt? probably, but I’ll do my best to make sure it’s me” this golden hearted boy is literally saying he will try to protect her from any emotional pain, it’s the first time we see someone making Kat feel safe and cared for and it wildly contrasts her cam girl days. Just like Rue and Jules’ bond what Ethan and Kat have like most high school loves is very very fragile, but after Ethan and Kats shared kiss and them leaving the dance together it seems like S2 is set up for them to shine. that being said I’d loveeee to see the conflict Kat has like in S1 when she was jealous of a girl Ethan was talking to and acted out, but just more of her trying to navigate that she can accept and give love. I feel like Kat and Jules both share ambitious natures and could really empathise with one another and show some growth as a power duo, I’d love to see them lifting each other up next season (maybe Kat can become Rules’ ship captain tee hee) and I cant be the only one.
