current AU: my hilde x tira college au (iykyk 😏) believe it or not it was actually spawned/branched off from the SC yoga au fic i haven’t touched or written for in months 💀 which is endlessly amusing to me bc even though they’re both modern aus featuring the characters in comparatively lower stakes, the tone/genre contrast is really funny to think about. i’m a pantser so i don’t fully know where i’m going with either story but i’m having a lot of fun thinking of scenes and story beats i wanna add!

Since two of you asked about him, I will be compiling this into one post. Setsuka will come around later.

Now,

where do I start?

Azwel is probably one of, if not my one favorite villain thus far in the Soulcalibur series. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve liked Nightmare for as long as I can remember, but Azwel has this sadistic charm to him that makes him compelling from the get-go.

One thing I adore about the way he is portrayed in SCVI is this initial image of “hammy villain who exaggerates everything”. To some degree, that is true, but I don’t think enough people understand that his eccentric personality acts as a coverup for how intelligent and frightening he is. For all the over-the-top expressions he makes, every action that follows is for a specific purpose, and the game makes it clear he knows exactly what he’s doing. 

The events within the Aval Organization that led to several of their numbers killed, especially Orzal and Curtis, the gruesome level of trauma he inflicted onto Grøh as a result(I am never forgiving him for that, mind you.), and all the while he is relishing in this. This is entertaining to him. 

His plans later on in Libra of Soul expand on this. Gathering followers who have been swayed by Azwel’s “kind nature”, only to force them into cruel experimentation. This alone really makes me wonder about(and even feel sorry for) the events surrounding Valtro. He was already afflicted with a disease among his other friends, and despite his criminal actions in the past, he willingly followed Azwel once he cured him, only to be screwed over in the end by his goals. It’s more than clear that Azwel is a master of manipulation, and he will commit any and all acts of cruelty if it means he reaches what he wants.

The worst part about this is that it is all done to meddle with another’s life, The Conduit. The Conduit was already dealing with enough as is. “Find Astral Fissures or die. Oh, by the way they don’t have a definitive location so have fun trying to find them quickly. Oh and also here are some bonus headaches and nightmares. Have fun!”. In comes Azwel after that, and as proven from later dialogue and some museum information, from the moment he met the Conduit, he confirmed they would be the key to the Ultimate Seed, allowing them to absorb more Astral Fissures just so he could use their body as the main method to form it, along with the swords.

The Conduit is able to stop this from occurring(thankfully), and it seems that Azwel is done and dealt with, right? Nope! Not only is he still alive, but his current vague scheme appears just as awful if not worse than everything he committed in Libra. Now that we have two major characters in the roster as some of the main victims (Raphael and Amy), I do not doubt that his current ultimatum will potentially ruin more lives than before. 

I say “vague scheme”, but I have a theory about this that ties into another related theory about his future plans. But that’s a post for another (but soon) time.

Another little (or big) thing I learned about Azwel several years ago was that his gauntlets, “Palindrome”, are actually capable of reading a person’s mannerisms. You can actually read about this in Daniel’s notes in the museum section. Azwel expresses to Daniel that not only can he read his thoughts, but he knows that when he becomes excited, “he says exactly what’s on his mind”. This also explained how Azwel countered Amy so swiftly, especially with his line, “When you’re angry, your left leg leaves you open”. So yes, no one can actually escape from this man. Once he is within your range, he knows just about everything that makes up your thought process, mannerisms, etc.

All in all, this man sickens me, and I’m here for it. I love it when villains actually commit to what they say they’re going to do, even more so when it is more than clear they know exactly what they are doing to stir the pot. I love Azwel’s character, but I do not like anything he has done to Grøh, The Conduit, Raphael, Amy…I fear for any other character who falls prey to this man. But yeah, thank you both for asking about him! I’ll be addressing Setsuka soon!

I have nothing to say about this piece except that I like to poke at the contrast between these guys.

Grøh is dark, cold, and pessimistic, yet is often seen helping others despite brushing it off as just doing his job.

Azwel claims to be love and light to everyone around him and often speaks in flowery language, but it is to hide how cruel and sadistic he is.
