It's WIP Wednesday and I'm in a sharing mood... so here's a snippet from the first Assassin's Creed Odyssey fic I've written in about three years, something new. It'll cover the entire events of Legacy of the First Blade, with references to The Fate of Atlantis and Kassandra's role as the Keeper.
Pairing: Kassandra/Natakas (judge me all you want, but I love them and I will never stop loving them)
---------------
“Mater, could you come and help me with this?” she called out from the doorway into her home.
As Myrrine stalked towards her, away from Natakas and Phobos — Darius, as usual, keeping to himself, though she didn’t exactly blame him at that moment — Kassandra could almost feel the rage rolling off of her mother in crashing tidal waves. She knew the older woman had not approved of her daughter settling, in her eyes, for a Persian man, though she was starting to wonder if she had underestimated just how deep her mother’s resentment towards Persia truly ran. Almost unconsciously, she ran her hand over the swell of her belly, receiving a hearty kick in response from her passenger. Briefly, she made eye contact with her husband, and Natakas smiled wanly back at her. Kassandra could tell he was shaken from the venom in Myrrine’s words.
Perhaps she wouldn’t ever truly accept them; but Kassandra had to try and make her mother’s visit an easier time on them all.
Myrrine reached her, and Kassandra almost recoiled at the sudden change to a sickly sweet tone of voice. “What is it, lamb?”
“In… in here,” she muttered in response, leading her mother into the house.
As her mother walked past her, Kassandra wondered what she would say — what she could say — to sway her mind. Myrrine’s animosity towards Persia ran deep, and with what was arguably the best reason, but Kassandra knew that two people didn’t represent an entire country, just as she did not represent the entirety of Sparta. In the end, however, she knew that the only possible words that would hopefully get through to her mother would be honest admissions of her own feelings.
“Did you want some help preparing our meal for tonight?” Myrrine asked, glancing to the side at the abandoned elk meat in the bowl next to the fireplace.
Kassandra sighed, gesturing toward the table and chairs in the centre of the room. “Can we sit?” Her mother’s eyes narrowed slightly, but she complied, sitting on what was normally Natakas’ chair. Does she have to rub her disapproval in even more? She sat opposite her mother, leaning forward and folding her hands in front of her on the table. She didn’t dare meet her eyes, for fear that Myrrine would misunderstand the hesitation she felt and run with it.
“Is everything well, my lamb? Are you feeling sick at all?” her mother asked, placing one of her hands on top of Kassandra’s.
No going back now, she thought. “We need to talk. About Natakas.”
She felt Myrrine’s hand stiffen on top of hers. “What about him?”
Kassandra looked up and met her mother’s eyes with a glare. “You know damn well what.”
“Don’t take that tone with me,” Myrrine snapped, but Kassandra didn’t flinch. She’d heard worse from more frightening people, after all. Unbidden, the memory of Pactyas and his tree of the dead in Makedonia came to mind, bringing a sour taste to her mouth, not helped by the nausea that still lingered from that morning.
“We need to talk,” she said, her brow furrowed, “because we haven’t spoken about my husband since you arrived and made your disapproval quite clear. If you’d shouted any louder, I’m sure Nikolaos would have heard you in Sparta.”
Myrrine scowled at her. “How else was I supposed to get my point across?”
Kassandra inhaled and exhaled deeply through her nose. “All you got across was your intolerance for people who don’t share the same values as you. Which, through my marriage, includes me. Did you not stop to think about that?”
“I—” Myrrine turned her head, looking to the side bitterly. Kassandra knew she had struck a nerve. She may not have the same level of patience as Darius, or even Natakas, but she could be calm and decisive when she wanted to. Her mother looked back at her. “Leonidas was my father. He fought to protect Hellas from the yoke of the Persian Empire. Xerxes and his army killed him.” Myrrine scoffed. “And now you expect me to … what? Just accept that my daughter, my flesh and blood, is carrying a child that will be half Persian? That child will have the blood of Leonidas, and the blood of the people that killed him!”
“I know,” Kassandra replied softly. “And that will make my child stronger — to show that two sides once locked in a devastating war can come together and create something beautiful, where once there was nothing but death.”
“Did you not hear a word I just said?” Myrrine asked incredulously. Kassandra’s gaze hardened, and she pointedly moved a hand to her belly in a protective manner.
“I don’t expect you to completely move past your biases, mater. There’s too much poison there that will never allow the wound of losing your father to heal,” she said. “But if you want to be a part of your grandchild’s life, then the least you can do is understand that I am my own person, capable of making my own choices, and I have chosen Natakas. Perhaps he isn’t the husband you envisaged for me — I’m sure you imagined I’d marry a Spartan and give our home more soldiers for her army — but he makes my heart race in ways I never thought possible. He’s the last person I see when I fall asleep and the first when I wake. And I want nothing more than the opportunity to experience some semblance of a normal life … with him.”
Myrrine’s gaze had fallen to watch Kassandra protectively rub circles on the swell of her belly through her plain exomis. A muscle was jumping in her jaw as she listened to the words of Kassandra’s heart. “But—”
Kassandra interrupted her. “Mater, I have been many things in my short time on this world.” She held up her hand — the one that had been on the table — and started counting on her fingers. “A daughter, a Spartan, an outcast. A misthios to some, and a legend to others. I have been a captain and a warrior, and so much more.” She lowered her hand back to the table. “Natakas is giving me the chance to be something new — to be a wife, and a mother. Things I thought I would never get the chance to do, let alone want, but I want it with him.” Kassandra sighed again. “I take care of him, and he takes care of me. I protect him, he protects me. I love him. He loves me. Not the misthios, not the legend — me. Kassandra — the woman who was thrown from Mount Taygetos as a child, who learnt to survive on her wits and trained to make sure no one would ever take advantage of her, who has had to struggle and fight her whole life.” She felt tears come to her eyes. Damn hormones. “I have spent my life rising in the morning, not knowing if I would get to watch the sun set at night. All of my experiences have shaped me as a person, and it just so happens that Natakas loves that person.”
Kassandra stood from her chair, leaning on the table. “I don’t expect you to suddenly start treating him as though he were your own, but I’d very much like if you could perhaps stop seeing an entire country in the place of one person.” She moved away, heading towards the door and intending to spend some time calming her husband’s rattled nerves; but she looked back and smiled sadly at her mother. Myrrine hadn’t moved from her spot, her eyes glazed over as she stared at nothing. “Get to know him, and you’ll see that he has fewer ties to Persia than you think.”

Am I the only one who kinda ships Kassandra X Darius (Artabanus)? I know the age gap is huge (But Ubisoft kinda taught us in one side mission that age is just a number;)), but I see much more chemistry between them than Kassandra ever had with Natakas. And I could swear that Darius even flirted with her in some scenes.

Why I think only Brasidas and Phoebe were the options for resurrection in the new AC Odyssey DLC.
Natakas was Persian, right? He wouldn’t have went to the Greek underworld after death, right?

The Olive Carved Eagle
“I’d follow you across the world, Kassandra. I’d live everyday of my life for you. If you think this is too fast, and you’d like to slow it down, just tell me. I’d understand, and follow your lead. But the token and the flowers are my offer to you: your answer doesn’t have to be today, or even tomorrow. As long as you know my offer stands, and I stand with it.”
“I accept you,” she whispered. “Whether you’re standing, or sitting, I accept you.”
Kassandra/Natakas, Kassandra & Alexios, check the fic for full tags.
This is now complete!

My view on Natakas after playing
tl;dr the fandom hates him cuz of the forced romance. He (and by extension Neema) is a well written love interest with similar experiences to the Misthios.
Natakas is damn near everything I’ve been looking from in a male character since I became and author. I got tired of seeing male characters be ‘cool’ when they disregard lives or act as if being nice is and caring for others is a sign of weakness that must be hidden. Using a tragic backstory to make someone cold and cut off is lame imo and there’s too much of it when justifying villains.
From the second you meet him, Natakas is looking out for other people and aiding you in aiding them. He’s shown to be a skilled hunter and a stealthy individual like his father based on how he gathers information on the Order of the Ancients without being found and killed.
He’s not without his trauma, but who in Assassin’s Creed is? Like The Misthios, his family has been targeted by a secret organization causing him to be on the run. He Does not let his trauma break or control his life. He still shows compassion and a sense of right in the face of some incredibly heinous and down right evil people. He never dips into darkness to fight the darkness.
As for the romance, it’s obviously scripted, but it’s very player initiated and a lot is said nonverbally between Kass and Natakas. Their moments are nice and sweet and focus on just being a person instead of fighting some shadowy organization.
As a bi person, it was great to see someone like me (Kass and Natakas since we’re allowed to do that) get to actually have a life and family in the face of all the tragedy they’ve seen. I cried for a third time (both times finding Myrinne) because Kassandra looked and sounded so happy and after her life she deserves as much happiness as she can get. Even with the backlash, I hope those that are happy with the family get to enjoy it in the end although THEY SHOULD’VE JUST NAMED THE BABY LEONIDAS or Alexios or whatever. I kinda wish there wasn’t an option for your family to die cuz Myrinne would be a great grandmother and Alexios a great uncle!

This Is The Beginning
First chapter of my Legacy of the First Blade rewrite is up! Each episode from the DLC will have its own story.
Part 1 is This Is The Beginning, part 2 will be Of Something New, and part 3 will be And This Is Our Ending.
There will also be an epilogue story set during the Korfu quest, "A Great Escape", and that's going to be called The Memories Hurt, But Darling They're All I Have Left Of You. Because, you know, I like to be angsty :)
Once the main stories are complete, I'll most likely post a compilation of short stories/one-shots and drabbles set within the series that I've written along the way.
Link to the first chapter is below!
