PM Modi on Monday said that the symbols of India's faith, culture, and spirituality were targeted by foreign invaders and oppressors during the era of slavery. He also added that rebuilding these symbols is essential to strengthen the country and get united.

PM Modi made the statement as he inaugurated the newly built Swarved Mahamandir, the world's largest meditation center. Modi declared that the country is finally free from a "slave mentality".

"The rejuvenation of symbols of India that began from Somnath has turned into a full-fledged campaign. The rejuvenation of Kashi Vishwanath, Mahakal Mahalok, Kedarnath Dham, and Buddha Circuit are opening the path of development... Ram Circuit would be completed soon," he said.

PM Modi also talked about the economic contribution that pilgrimage sites are making to the country. The "rejuvenation of our teerths (pilgrimage sites) is boosting development and economic activities," said Modi as he gave the example of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham which after only two years of rejuvenation has become a great trigger for the Indian economy.

Modi also talked about the time when India’s heritage held no value and there was no pride in it. He gave the example of Somnath temple which was in a very disturbing condition and even when the rejuvenation was necessary, it was opposed for several years post-Independence. This is what led the country to slip into an abyss and stop taking pride in its national heritage. "But now the wheels of time have turned," the PM said. "Now Kashi has become a symbol of development, modern facilities along with faith and cleanliness and transformation," he added.

Every city has its own beauty of sunrise or sunset. Every city has a special peaceful quiet feeling at the wake of the dawn with the chirping of some birds.But, Kashi Vishwanath Dham has a unique aura of its own, one will wake up with the sweet jingling sound of the bells of the temples big or small at every nook and corner of the streets,lanes and by lanes of the whole city. I woke up with the sunrise with such tinkling and jingling of the different shapes and sizes of bells of the ‘mandirs’ (temples), ready to visit the famous Vishwanath temple of Kashi.

It can be a word of mouth or utter faith that Baba Vishwanath fulfils everyone’s dream or demand. I even heard in the olden days, the hindu widows young and old were send away from home to Kashi, so that they can spend the rest of their lives in worshipping Lord Shiva in Vishwanath temple. It is the holiest of all Shiva temples , Vishwanath temple stands on the western bank of Ganges. There are 9 entries or exits of Vishwanath Temple but the best way is to enter through the ‘Vishwanath Dwar’, near Godowlia Chawk.

At 5.30 - 6.00 AM the serpentine ‘Vishwanath Gali’ was dark, damp and cold, almost all the shops on both sides of the gali closed except the flower shops and the puja utensils made of bright and shining brass and copper. As I entered the temple bare feet, the wet floor of the temple made me shiver a little bit, what was more chilling was the chorus, chanting of the ‘sadhus’ waiting outside the temple,”Jai Baba Bholenath” with folded hands. The man who handed me the flower basket for the puja told me, “sab Bholenath ki kripa” (that I got the chance to offer puja to Lord Shiva) here in Kashi. It is believed that without the blessing of Lord Shiva, no one can visit this temple of the Lord of the Universe. Offering prayer to Baba Vishwanath is a peaceful feeling but visualizing the ‘Shivling’ (the idol of Lord Shiva) at the ‘Garbhagriha’ (the inner most sanctum) decked up with fresh flowers and constantly bathed with milk and people surrendering their faith and respect with absolute sincerity to Vishwanath, send a chill to my spines.

I am not a religious person in particular but quite spiritual. The utter solemnity of the atmosphere around, the cries of sudden ushering “Jai Baba Vishwanath”, the frequent ringing of the temple bells by the followers, aroused a peacefulness in me. I was in a kind of trance, bowed down towards the ido;, offered flowers and poured milk; quite unconsciously but spontaneously uttered ‘Jai Baba Bholenath’ in my mind. Never felt such serenity in my soul before.

The pujari said,”mandir ka pradakshin karlo.” (go around the whole temple area). I stepped out and was quite thrilled to see a huge OX made of stone. Going round the temple I found many hindu idols of worship, quite small but beautiful. I noticed that some kind of construction of the architecture of the temple was going on. I was bit taken aback, why cannot the restoration of the architecture of one of the oldest temple of India be possible, instead of breaking them and constructing a new one.

As i came out of the temple, the shopkeeper seeing me a bengali said,”abar ashbey, abar pujo debe.” (come again and offer prayers again) I was amazed by their welcoming note and smiled back and said,”benarasi bhasha acha lagta hain, ussi mein baat kijiye; bangali toh harr waqt sunti hu.” (I love the dilect of Benaras, speak to me in that language; I am use to listening to Bengali) I immediately saw a wide smile on the faces of the onlookers. Suddenly a ‘sadhu’ held his hand up in the air and shouted, “sab Bholenath ki kripa , beti” (all happens in this life by HIS wishes and blessings)
