!!Long live ye Olde Monk!!

This was a Monk, who never sold a Ferrari, but without him, no college reunion was complete. The Monk was an integral part of many people’s college lives. Who does not have a crazy story to tell of the time they sat in a dingy old bar with cheap "Old Monk" with boiled eggs and onions ??

The unique bottle, flavour, sweet taste enlivened memories, sparked nostalgia, warmed up the cockles of heart, renewed the 'Auld lang syne'...and gave it the special place that it holds in our hearts.

It’s USP was that it was light on your pocket but hit all the right spots when ingested. And if you are Vastu freak, you would be amazed to observe that it’s bottle has the pride of place holding the "Money Plant" in several houses !

It's taste grew on you slowly and made you its faithful follower. It was the first drink of choice, after Beer, for the novice and the connoisseur of dark Rum alike. The Cap on the bottle is still the same old screw top, which when twist opened, invariably becomes loose ! Which made a tippler remark that the bottle once opened, is meant to be finished off in one session ! And which was not very difficult once you start and were in a good company.

According to the legend, a rum loving British monk would be seen lurking around the rum barrels belonging to the company Mohan Meakin in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. He would apparently taste the rum in its ripening season, and hang out with the master craftsmen. Over time, the monk became a bit of a rum expert himself and offered valuable advice to the craftsmen at Mohan Meakin who dedicated India’s first brand of rum to the benevolent monk.

It originated in the year 1954, launched by the Mohan Meakins Breweries. An Indian dark rum, aged 7 years in oak casks, with a distinct chocolate, vanilla flavour, with 42.8% alcohol content. It was packaged in a unique dark bottle.

Its physical availability over the years bettered with the so-called ‘Original’ available only in Military Canteens to now available easily, has helped carry its legacy far and wide. It will be amazing to learn that this brand has never been advertised..for it, the word of mouth publicity, alone sufficed till now !

Old Monk still holds a special place in the hearts of every Indian tippler because it was invariably their first drink. You associate it with the best times of your life, drinking it takes you back to the time when you were wild and free, so even if people upgrade to drinking single malt whiskies, still they will never say no to a tipple of Old Monk !!
