Hello again, everyone…and welcome to another installment of Fandom Friday, the two-post series where I go off to find new and interesting fanworks that might need a bit more visibility.

Before I get started, however...just in case these lists look a bit too short this week, it's because I work at a grocery store, and this time of year...well, it's bonkers. We were pretty much swamped with people off and on almost all week, so naturally, everything kinda took its toll on me and I needed a lot of down time to rest and recharge.

Andor Wednesday #11, "To Climb" by Nock_and_Bolt

I first read this story ~ 3 weeks ago, when it was first posted - but I couldn't resist re-reading it again today. And I have a feeling it's not gonna be the last time.

Description: If you, like me, went absolutely mad while watching Andor and seeing all those little references and parallels - you're gonna love this story.

It describes Cassian's final moments - between climbing up that data tower on Scarif and the, erm, canonical ending. But it's so much more than just a series and events! The story is interwoven with memories, quotes, parallels (from both Andor and Rogue One). You feel like all those characters, all those people Cassian has met on his path - they are with him during that one final climb, helping him find the strength to keep going.

It's just... the connections are so well made, and the entire internal monologue is so beautifully written. It's an amazing read. Seriously, drop everything and go read it.

Oooooh this isn't a ship I had previously considered, but now that I think about it, I've always loved the dynamic of "older grizzled/jaded grump falls for enthusiastic younger person that hasn't been beaten down by the world just yet". I so wish we'd gotten to see more of both Skeen and Nemik in the show (I know, I know, there can only be so much crammed into an episode, but they seemed so wonderfully complex), and this fic seems like it will scratch that itch while also providing some romance/spice. How to Winter by Kari Leibowitz

Chris says: Leibowitz addresses several ways in which the cold and dark of winter might be better tolerated based on her research in Tromsøand other areas of the world that experience extreme winters. Though it can become repetitive, the book contains some useful strategies for changing one's mindset about the season.

The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times by Jane Goodall and Douglas Abrams

Kate recommended this one back in 2022, but I'm pulling it out for your ask because it seems like a good choice for the long, dark months. Here's what Kate had to say:

Jane Goodall’s advice about the future of our world in this book is inspiring and uplifting. She makes it seem like all is not lost in the world and we still have a chance to make the world a better and healthier place to live.

I particularly enjoyed her words on the resiliency of nature and the power of the young people in our world. I highly recommend this book!

Hi! Ive been trying to learn about mortuary science in my free time, but im unable to take any classes. Do you have any recommended websites, books, or any sources for getting started?

Yes there are tons of ways you can learn about mortuary science without taking classes! Here are some of my favorite recs, I consumed a lot of these before i started mortuary school but some of them I’m using as supplementary study!

Books:

-Stiff by Mary Roach. This book is a TAD dated, but it is an interesting deep-dive into the way that human bodies have contributed to science, how body disposition practices have changed, and how our understanding of death has changed over time. It's beautifully written and really good for getting your feet wet in this topic.

-The Anatomist by Bill Hayes. This is a sort of biography of Henry Gray and Henry Carter (the author and illustrator of Gray’s Anatomy, respectively) combined with a crash course in anatomy. It’s a very fun read!

-Gray’s Anatomy. I still find the illustrations and descriptions in this book really helpful!

-Embalming: History, Theory and Practice by Robert G Mayer. This is technically a textbook, but it's probably the most in-depth book on embalming if that's something you're interested in! It runs kindof expensive, but you can get an account on internet archive and borrow it. I also know there are epubs available of it if you care to seek them out ;)

-All that Remains by Sue Black. Dame Black was a forensic scientist. Her writing is very brutally honest! Forensic pathology is a field I'm personally interested in and very relevant to mortuary science!

These are both great resources for learning about grief, alternate death practices, thanatology, etc.

Videos:

The Mutter museum’s youtube channel. For lots of cool videos on medical history!

Undertaker 365's video on embalming. This is a smaller channel, and this video is long but easy to listen to in the background to learn about embalming.

Kari the Mortician. She has easy-to-follow short-form videos as well as a podcast! I like her because she is a practicing funeral director and embalmer with a long history in the industry. She talks about everything involving funeral services, from directing, to embalming, to historical knowledge, to industry terms, etc.

I'll give a brief caveat to that if you watch any videos by mortician influencers take their knowledge with a grain of salt. Mortuary science, embalming, and funeral directing varies depending on where you are and what path you decide to take, and sometimes social media influencers have a biased perspective. Caitlyn Doughty's historical videos are interesting, but i'd steer clear of any of her opinion pieces. Always keep in mind that social media is designed to highlight posts and videos that stimulate negative emotions; fear-mongering, contrarian attitudes, etc. Negativity draws views. If someone has an overtly negative opinion about embalming, burial, cremation, etc, remember that is just their opinion and never take any one person's opinion as gospel!

Hope this helps as a start! I have a lot of books on my to-read list, so I'll post my opinions of them when I finish them!

“I asked you where your Alpha is, Omega,” he snaps, fingers digging into the softness of your inner arm. The way he says ‘omega’, like it’s some kind of insult instead of a biological term pisses you off.

“Fuck you, where my Alpha is at is none of your business,” you snarl at him, wrenching your arm out of his grasp. You can smell him, rage and arrogance rolling off his frame in waves. “We don’t put hands on our Omegas here. Omegas are highly respected in this compound and if you mistreat one, especially one that’s already bonded, you’ll be out on your ass in a heartbeat,” you say, trying to send out a scent signal that you weren’t to be messed with.

“You should learn how to hold your tongue, Omega, it’ll get you into trouble. If you were my mate-“ he starts but a strong and familiar scent washes over you, relaxing you. “She’ll never be your mate, so it doesn’t matter what you think a mate should be,” he snaps, his scent as sharp as his tone and a tiny cramp hits your stomach. The other Alpha is helmeted, so you can’t read his expression, but you can smell it. He’s annoyed, angry, and defensive. He’s disrespected the clans head Alpha and his mate, he’s expecting a fight. Normally Paz would challenge him, he doesn’t allow newcomers to disrespect the clan, omegas specifically and definitely not his own bonded omega. He sniffs again, a deeper sniff as he tries to decipher the other scent. He must find what he’s sniffing for because a low growl comes from deep in his chest and his scent turns red hot with anger.

It’s about the same time you realize what’s happening, because a third cramp hits your stomach and you realize what kind of cramps these are. Your heat is two weeks early and it explains the way some of the Alpha’s have been acting around you today. You try to rack your brain to figure out why it would be so early but you come up blank as the first waves of desire hit your core. Your oncoming heat is probably the reason this Alpha decided to try and strong arm you as well.

“I’ll deal with you later,” he growls and you can feel the anger in his voice. Another cramp hits your belly, stronger than the last three, and it almost doubles you over. Paz’s strong arms wrap around your waist and ushers you down the hall, back to your shared quarters. You pass Din Djarin on the way and vaguely hear Paz mumble something to him, but another cramp hits and you don’t hear what it is.

University & HS BL Revolving Around Study

Semantic Error - class conflict is the inciting event, and this is one of my favorite BLs of all time. So yeah, it tops the list. I am assuming you have watched it because EVERYONE must watch this little pice of perfect. Full review here.

Blueming - the school project is the source of the conflict, this is a complicated chewy very thoughtful BL, longer than normal for Korea. If you enjoy things like The 8th Sense you might like this. Full review here.

Love Class - the whole show is about a manufactured relationship as part of a social science class experiment. Full review here.

You Make Me Dance - I mean it's a dance major so no actual book study but yeah, it's there he has to win a dance scholarship as a main part of the plot. I've never done a full review of this, and frankly that's an oversite. Time for a rewatch?

HIStory 2: Right or Wrong - it's about a teacher student relationship so...

Addicted: Heroin - especially the first half, I know what you're thinking, but also, THINK about it. It's all within a class from environment for most of the first 6 eps. I believe it counts. This is, without question, the best BL China has ever produced. FIGHT ME.

Destiny Seeker - an under appreciated pulp that is basically predicated on the university sorting hat. I have great affection for this hot mess, including all the sides. Mostly takes place within and around the complexities of dorm life. Full review here.

Kiss Me Again series (BL cut) + Dark Blue Kiss (AKA the PeteKao series staring TayNew) - it's not necessarily a driver but engineering and study is actual integral in a setting as character kind of way. And there is a lot of "make-out while studying." Plus we in the TayNew renauances and I have great affection for their original series. Everyoen shoudl watch it. Here's the watch guide.

HS BL - not exactly study, but sorta & they really good

Light On Me - Another one of my absolute favorite BLs, but it's about the school government club, not actual study. Full review here.

Love Sick - if you count club activities. I just got a full load up of this series with new subs, so I was going to do a watch along in honor of 2024 (its 10th anniversary). I am still considering it.

My School President - also, if you count extra-curricular & club activities. Another BL that i absolutely adore. No full review but I did have a long discussion on how this plays into Thailand's new norm in BL here.

Takara & Amagi - ugh I love this show so much but it's more about popularity and social acceptance in HS than studing, full review here.

About Youth - if you count external parental pressure to over achieve, another underappreciated gem, this time for Taiwan. Full review here.

I dithered...

Bad Buddy - maybe, I mean departmental conflict is a large part of the story, plus high school back story club activities, but there is very little study. Full review here.

Oh this one is actually tough I don't read a ton of fic for fandoms/stuff I haven't watched but honestly a lot of Strangers from Hell fanfic is so good that I ended up starting the show (also the gifs were COMPELLING)

When I was traveling for work I started reading some of the fic - A Choice is Made: Blank Page by scifigeek14 & Twist the Knife by memequeen1127 both come to mind - b/c they're of decent length and there were a couple that I was like "wow, gotta watch this show and get on board with this ship" lol I think if anyone vibes with Hannibal they'd vibe with Strangers from Hell (also the show has lee dong-wook doing what he does best, having wild gay tension with his costar)

Also this fic for Word of Honor b/c like, I didn't really ship Xie Wang/Ye Baiyi (they have one scene together the whole show lol) but like, I'm also a sucker for a good sugar daddy fic plus it's funny? Oh this is easy, Ever Seaward Echoes More by @kari-kurofai I don't think I've ever been shy about the fact that I find UWMA an overhyped show but this is hands down one of the best fics I've ever read and I've been reading fanfic since the days of ffnet's peak lol the only part of UWMA that I truly enjoyed was In and Korn and this fic just like 1) beautifully written, genuinely and 2) is about them and in a way that's rich, complex, and sincere with emotion the ending got me the first time I read it and it was amazing

The story is interwoven with excerpts from different literature, things that Cassian - or others who came after him - would likely read and get inspired by. And it just works so well, all these fragments are so thoughtful and reinforce the message of the show, it really feels like this should be a mandatory read for everyone who liked Andor :)

Hiiii ~ I'm good, how are you? Reading your message really warmed my heart :3 I know I'm like a broken record, but hearing people enjoy the stuff I put effort writing in makes me feel ecstatic. Take these hearts!!

Very good questions, and I had a hard time picking uke characters because I love them so much??? Interestingly, when I first started reading BL I found myself gravitating towards the seme but in recent years I like uke characters more. Tropes and trends surely change in years so it's possible that more artists started writing the type of characteristics that I love. Anyways, enough rambling and onto the recommendations!

If I had to find one characteristic that I ADORE in an uke, that would be emotional maturity. They may not be experienced romantic relationship-wise or confused/mislead depending on the situation but I love it when they are honest to themselves and their love interest/partner. Here are some recent or all-time favorites that fit this bill:

An Extremely Haphazard and Weak-willed Kiss - Koshino (desperately need that 2nd vol!!)

Tsubame's Happiness - Arima Arashi

The Farthest Love in the World - Asou Mitsuaki

His Little Amber - Natsume Kazuki

All That Pierces The Heart - Kari Sumako (I admit Akira is not that emotionally mature but my heart just felt his pain! Please give this one a read if you haven't.)

The New Recruit - Moscareto & ZEC

Honorable mentions would be Semantic Error, FANGS, Birds of Shangri-la, The Insatiable Man, Between the Stars, Like the Beast, Golden Sparkle, I'll Make You Cry.

As you can see... my brain fried up trying to limit the characters I love to a list! Not possible.

As for female characters in BL!

As you know, they aren't as prominent in BL for whatever reason, so it wasn't too hard to limit myself (sadly). I like that they increasingly become a part of the narrative, as a character themselves and not just for jealousy reasons! Here are my top 3:

The Insatiable Man: Jiho has two older sisters, and while at first one of them is not as likable as the other, both serve very important roles in the narrative and Jiho's journey, including their mother. I'll wither away if we don't get the 3rd season anytime soon.

Who Can Define Popularity?: There are two female characters in this story that I especially like, one of them is the friends with the main couple, and the other is the sister of the main character Siwon. This completed manhwa is a MUST READ because it's fun, it's emotional and full of goodness.

Love For Sale: I know I know, you're SO tired of me bringing up this series everytime I get an ask but what's a girl to do???? It's just THAT good! I actually adore the uke in this as well but I held back, so cut me some slack for mentioning it here. The main character Namwoo has an older sister, Eunjung. I like her not only because she's her own character, interesting and have lots to offer, her and her brother's relationship is extremely similar to what we have with my older brother. And because of that similarity, reading about their relationship was super emotional for me.

Honorable mention: They aren't exactly in the center but Traces of the Sun has two side characters that are a joy to see when they make a cameo.
