Ngl I feel like I enjoy a lot of the aspects of the framing of Karen ogre, esp the end. I just think it could use some polishing, personally. I like Karen as a protagonist her perspective is interesting and different from others. I’d honestly like to see more arcs from her POV, perhaps with fire sisters shenanigans.
In retrospect after reading like shino2 it feels like an arc that sets up themes for that more than shino1. The survivalist aspect creates a parallel. Perhaps also because it’s also a story of fools aspects of it feel like it has parallels to oraka in that sense. Like waza focuses on concepts of the legacy of vampires for 2 of its stories and Karen ogre focuses on foolishness, self recognition, and personal growth. It’s sorta the opposite side of Tsukihi Undo in that the former has a focus on legacy, monstrousness, foolishness based on inhumanity, and not vampires (which is interesting because of the initial setup for Tsukihi to be a protagonist before bailing to focus on Nadeko).
Karen ogre was initially a sort of set up for musubi to show how far she’s come in the sense of personal responsibility. However for the end of monster season it’s less the case parallels wise for shinomono 1 which capitalizes on the vampire aspects of wazamonogatari and shinobumono. So connections with the arc are more along the lines of “by the way Karen is doing well in COVID and is camping/taking responsibility/thriving.” and “look at all the cute shinobu forms!” Because the response to Karen’s growth happened in musubi, this is more or casual recognition of it than anything to say it’s on the table.
Over all I think Karen ogre is interesting but the comedy can kinda take you out of it at points. This is because Karen is comically stupid about the shinobu thing so it comes off as a bit weird. Granted you could also take it as she’s woozy from the shadow weight and doesn’t believe in the supernatural so it’s the obvious conclusion.

which monogatari character do you imagine would make the worst deserts? a terrible baked alaska or a devastating turkish delight
100% karen
she doesnt even know how to cook rice
so to do something that's as exact as baking? never in a million years i wouldnt be surprised if she burned the house down before she could bake a good desert. i feel like she'd be too hot-headed and not smart enough (not to diss her or anything 😭 love you karen) to stick to the recipe, and she'd keep forgetting ingredients and changing things and it would just become more and more of a disaster
now i dont think araragi or shinobu would be that much better for that matter. i dont think shinobu has ever needed to cook in her life and araragi would probably fuck up the recipe somehow i just dont trust him not to. he'd have to learn from like senjougahara or smth. but i think ultimately karen has to take the top (bottom) spot here for sure.
on the other hand, i think tsukihi is probably really good at baking, not because she would like do it as a hobby necessarily, but because she's naturally good at everything. she probably wouldnt even have to worry about a recipe she'd just do it bc shes that OP. but that feels like a bit of a cop out, so other than her maybe sodachi? sodachi is very exact, so for something as strict at baking i feel like shed excel. and then once she'd gotten the hang of a dish, she could alter things to perfect the flavor. i feel like if she got into baking she'd have a good sense for knowing what to change in a recipe to make it really delicious, and id go so far as to say it might even be like a healing thing for her
it's fun to do asks like this. i have nisioisin to thank for making such a good cast of characters lol
#im getting karens inabilty to cook rice from karen ogre btw#karen ogre#monogatari#monogatari series#araragi karen#araragi tsukihi#araragi koyomi#oshino shinobu#sodachi oikura#wazamonogatari#i was gonna tag ava dont look but i dont think this is really a spoiler#now i wanna write a fic where sodachi bakes stuff lol

it's a given that we will never get an arc narrated by ougi because they're too much of a wild card and yet i would kill for something compelling narrated by tsukihi. i need to know what's going on in that head of hers. i need to put her in a petri dish and study her.
#valhalla txt#it would probably remove too much of her comedic nature so it will never happen either.....#maybe it'd be like karen ogre levels of internal monologue lmao#still. that would be enough for me.

Finished Karen Ogre! That was really good. Love the idea that Karen could've done that herself and would've done better without help.
Shinobu being asked to help Karen, to bail her out of danger, felt like more of Koyomi's coddling. Yes, it means she'd be safe from serious harm, but it also kinda ruins the lessons, doesn't it?
Like, for instance, the whole idea of the mountain letting you "meet yourself". Both Koyomi and Karen assume that that last nudge at the end was simply another blonde cousin, when it's very much implied to be a supernatural occurrence.
Perhaps even one that Karen's Master wanted her to see, having done the same trip in her own youth.
Thankfully, despite Shinobu being there, despite Koyomi's overt meddling, Karen seems to have internalized the correct lesson anyway. Oh hey, that's kinda like the conclusion of Koyomi Tea. Almost like he should just tell his sisters already.
(Actually, with that in mind, it's actually pretty interesting that Koyomi's meddling actively prevented Karen from noticing that supernatural occurrence, caused her to lump it in with his help. That's very on the nose).
Anyway, uh, trying to wrangle a mundane explanation for said occurrence, hmm...
It's kinda shocking how much mileage plurality gets as a solution for anything supernatural in this series.

Homesick Propaganda Post
Because the hyperfixation has officially returned with a vengeance. I have three (3) ongoing hyperfixations help. Also I find this whole thing hilarious and must drag more mutuals down the rabbit hole (I’ve been here since Spring 22 I think?)
Main character is canonically Bisexual and the deuteragonist is canonically Asexual
Everyone is hot (I know what y’all’re about.)
Navy Blouin. (Yeah we like him here)
You get to support women’s wrongs (she bites a man’s ear off.)
There’s a guy named Kenny that we call Kenneth in the comments because it’s funny.
The series creator is amazing and feeds us with wonderful art a lot. She drew a bunch of them as the Mean Girls Jingle Bell Rock. She also drew the Peaches scene (You know what I mean the Mario thing) with the characters.
There’s a cat and his name is Ogre!!!! And he hates you!!!
There is a canon hijabi woman and she is hilarious and we love her
The color palette is amazing (mainly pinks and purples)
Gladiolus. (He likes ladybugs and doesn’t know how to ride a bike)
There’s a guy named Oak that we call babygirl in the comments because it’s funny (and accurate)
THE SEASON ONE FINALE HAS MUSIC.
Tomoha Kobayashi. (She beats the crap out of somehow and her hair is adorable)
Local Woman Kills and Looks Good Doing It
Guy gets almost killed and gets out of it by flirting. (Not spoiling though figure it our yourself.)
There’s a bird and her name is Karen.
Greasy Man “Discourse” (You hate loving him or love hating him it’s a win-win. We all want to beat up Greasy Man)
THE AAAAAAAAAART.
Look at my PFP. Do you like her. Then read it please?? You should like her

Just FYI the photographer who was at Karen Elson's wedding who took the photos of Taylor arriving at the wedding with the football clown also took a photo of Karlie wearing that maroon dress and has an IG story of one of the pics he took of Taylor and football ogre directly followed by an IG story of the photo her took of Karlie wearing that maroon dress, so make of that what you will 🤷🏼♀️

"Faerie Tale Theatre" Posthumous Reunion: The Stars' Final Resting Places
Some people might think I'm obsessed with death. A minor hobby of mine is to research celebrities' final resting places, via the website Find a Grave and the YouTube channel Hollywood Graveyard. And I like perusing themed guides to famous graves. For example, Hollywood Graveyard's videos themed to Christmas, Halloween, the cast and crew of The Wizard of Oz, cast and crew members of The Twilight Zone, etc., or Find A Grave's "Posthumous Reunion" pages for famous movie and TV show casts, sports teams, etc.
I decided to create a similar guide for the cast of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. Sadly, all too many stars of that cult classic series are no longer with us. Here's a guide (with links to Find a Grave pages) to the various places where those stars are buried, in case anyone here might like to visit a few someday.

off and monster season OP thoughts
so with new seasons comes new OPs but i'm really curious what's going to happen with Off and Monster seasons. there's some real chances for bangers, but there's also some ??? spots that i have no idea what will happen with. because the arcs are:
Sodachi Fiasco (which will be Marina Inoue/Sodachi's third OP)
Suruga Bonehead (Miyuki Sawashiro/Suruga's third OP
Tsukihi Undo (Yuka Iguchi/Tsukihi's second OP)
Princess Beauty (Shinobu OP, i guess?)
Acerola Bon Appetit (Shinobu OP, i guess?)
Karen Ogre (Eri Kitamura/Karen's second OP)
Tsubasa Sleeping (Yui Horie/Tsubasa's fourth OP)
Nadeko Draw (Kana Hanazawa/Nadeko's third OP)
Zenka Mermaid (???)
Nozomi Golem (???)
Mitome Wolf (???)
Tsuzura Human (???)
Shinobu Mastered (Shinobu's third/fourth/fifth OP?)
Mayoi Snail (Emiri Kato/Mayoi's fourth OP)
Mayoi Snake (Emiri Kato/Mayoi's fourth OP, but it's not really a Mayoi arc so i'm not sure)
Yotsugi Body (Saori Hayami/Yotsugi's second OP)
Yotsugi Shadow (see the Mayoi Snake thing)
Ougi Light (Kaori Mizuhashi/Ougi's second OP)
Ougi Fright (see the Mayoi Snake thing)
Shinobu Suicide (another Shinobu OP)
Nadeko Around (Kana Hanazawa/Nadeko's fourth OP)
there's a lot of characters getting their second or third OP here! for a lot of characters, they have one or two iconic songs for them, so it'll be interesting to see that repertoire expanded. there's a lot of uncertain spaces, tho, and i'm excited to see how those are handled
there's also the case of the secondary arcs in Monster Season, where it's named as such because of thematic reasons while the character in question never appears. they could give them two OPs for the arc, or do something weird. not sure
also, i wonder if, when we get an Ougi OP, how that's going to be played, since the previous two were definitely girl Ougi, but this new OP wouldn't be. if nothing else, it would be a great opportunity for Mizuhashi to stretch her range
also this is an upward limit of 21 different OPs, and even if they take liberties on some of the questionable ones, it's still over a dozen new OPs. that's a lot to look forward!

I read both Orokamonogatari and Wazamonogatari in roughly the space of 24 hours whilst still dealing with work and stuff, whoops. I guess I should go into Nademonogatari now hehe. But first, a couple of thoughts. SODACHI FIASCO AND TSUBASA SLEEPING WERE SO GOOD. Fiasco made me upset repeatedly, and only reinforced my feelings for Sodachi.... she just like me fr...
Tsubasa Sleeping had the greatest use of character voice and was so rich in implication and augh, Tsubasa...... I mean I don't wanna talk about them too much for spoilers. Wazamonogatari was far better than Orokamonogatari, I don't usually compare books directly, but I felt that since these two off-season novels are just 'three arcs' with no real theming, I think I can. It's also easy since Oroka has 1 really good arc (Fiasco), and two arcs I didn't really care about (Suruga Bonehead and Tsukihi Undo), whilst Waza opened up strong with Acerola Bon Appetite and then proceeded to follow that up with the fun Karen Ogre and really fun Tsubasa Sleeping. I wonder if I'll read Nademonogatari or the 3gatsu crossover first....

Honestly while it would make some sense i think it would be fundamentally weird to skip to monster season unless they want to adapt this whole thing and get it over with faster (not a good goal for any anime fundamentally) bc i think that waza is so innately promotable and there’s an amount of interest in musubi so it would be weird to just, skip them.
youtube
!!!!!! Nademono??????
#nadreblog#like sure you’re getting to the little girl trio arcs I suppose but why would you skip to Koyomi fanservice arcs before finishing like#tsubasa sleeping which has a new hanekawa form or karen ogre which shows a ton of Shinobu variations#sodachi fiasco is peak I personally see no reason to skip it outside of being a cowardly advertiser

Paperhouse is a 1988 British dark fantasy film directed by Bernard Rose. It was based on the 1958 novel Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr. The film stars Ben Cross, Glenne Headly and Gemma Jones. The original novel was the basis of a six-episode British TV series for children in the early 1970s which was titled Escape Into Night.
While suffering from glandular fever, 11-year-old Anna Madden draws a house. When she falls asleep, she has disturbing dreams in which she finds herself inside the house she has drawn. After she draws a face at the window, in her next dream she finds Marc, a boy who suffers with muscular dystrophy, living in the house. She learns from her doctor that Marc is a real person.
Anna sketches her father into the drawing so that he can help carry Marc away, but she inadvertently gives him an angry expression which she then crosses out, and the father (who has been away a lot and has a drinking problem, putting a strain on his marriage) appears in the dream as a furious, blinded ogre. Anna and Marc defeat the monster and shortly afterward Anna recovers, although the doctor reveals that Marc's condition is deteriorating.
Anna's father returns home and both parents seem determined to get over their marital difficulties. The family goes on holiday by the sea, where Anna finds an epilogue to her dream.
Charlotte Burke - Anna Madden, Ben Cross - Dad, Glenne Headly - Kate Madden, Elliott Spiers - Marc, Gemma Jones - Dr. Sarah Nichols, Jane Bertish - Miss Vanstone, Samantha Cahill - Sharon, Sarah Newbold - Karen.
Marianne Dreams is a children's fantasy novel by Catherine Storr. It was illustrated with drawings by Marjorie-Ann Watts and published by Faber and Faber in 1958. The first paperback edition, from Puffin Books in 1964, is catalogued by the Library of Congress as revised.
Marianne is a young girl who is bedridden with a long-term illness. She draws a picture to fill her time and finds that she spends her dreams within the picture she has drawn. As time goes by, she becomes sicker, and starts to spend more and more time trapped within her fantasy world, and her attempts to make things better by adding to and crossing out things in the drawing make things progressively worse. Her only companion in her dreamworld is a boy called Mark, who is also a long-term invalid in the real world.

i read all of those! sodachi fiasco stood out the most to me in orokamono, i cannot wait for it to get animated. i'm so excited that it's going to be the first arc to get adapted. it's gonna be so different from what we're used to, it doesn't even take place at naoetsu, there's so many new characters SHAFT are going to have to actually design and animate. there's no going around it. and sodachi is just superb. i love her.
more thoughts under the cut for every book
the first arc i had read after the anime was suruga bonehead because i love ougi and kanbaru. i remember thinking it was too bad i was reading a translation. i'm sure it held up a lot better in japanese, i haven't read all of the novels that were already adapted into the anime but i can tell it's kind of ougi's gimmick that you have to solve it before they give the answer, the way you would with a detective novel. likewise i can't wait for that one to get animated, the wordplay eluded me (i think i understood at the time because it was translated well) but i think the anime will do a great job at conveying the creepiness of the arc. it felt more like a comedy centered around a morbid puzzle in the middle when i read it. also OUGI IN CASUAL CLOTHES and tooe full design reveal?!?!?
tsubasa sleeping was fun now that i think back on it. i loved that we got to see dramaturgy again. i had also been waiting for someone aside from koyomi to become a vampire so it was exciting when it happened, even if it was temporary.
i absolutely adore the princess beauty arc but i don't think that's a secret.
i don't particularily care for either karen ogre or tsukihi undo. tsukihi undo was pretty funny but i don't think it was very memorable aside from that.
nademonogatari was awesome. i was still at a point after watching the anime where i actually mildly disliked nadeko. from watching the anime adaptation i had thought she was not such a good character compared to the other heroines ; i liked when she snapped in otorimonogatari, but i'm especially averse to yandere stuff that happens right after, and i thought the twist about her being delusional and breaking into koyomi's house was not well-foreshadowed in the anime at all. no clue about the novel though. but well. it turns out that not only is nadeko fantastic as a narrator (she's my favorite narrator), but she also becomes a specialist. this was another one of those things i felt might happen to at least one of the kids and i was so excited about it, especially since i did not expect it to happen to nadeko of all people. this novel marked the biggest shift in her character so far and god knows she's already had a LOT of twists and turns. also, this book features many character interactions that we'd barely seen or even not seen at all before, and nadeko's relationships are always interesting (when they don't involve koyomi). as usual the core message was very uplifting, and this one felt very on the mark.
now onto musubimonogatari. this one was a bit odd. i thought the monster of the week gimmick was pretty fun, koyomi ending up as a cop was hilarious. unfortunately i did not find the characters he helps and investigates very interesting. but i really i enjoyed seeing what everyone grew up to be. so, a bit of a mixed bag, but i would say i rather liked it overall.
i really liked yoimonogatari. it started off super gruesome until you thought about it some more. the twist was predictable but even so i had fun looking forward to it. it was also very touching, i was moved by the little girl's monologue and description of her home life. as opposed to musubimonogatari, this novel got me to care about a character we won't see again. this one also has information about the specialists' curses, and more nadeko, which was exciting.
shinobumonogatari was whatever. it felt like a cheap rehashing of yoimonogatari (edit: i probably meant another one, since yoimonogatari came after). the puzzle-solving in this one felt off. there was no way a reader could've possibly reasoned that one out. even without the answer to the cryptogram it was still fairly obvious that the culprit was not DVS, it felt like the difficulty of the riddle completely mismatched the end result. i was glad we saw her again but i didn't like this one.
i enjoyed amarimonogatari. that shit was crazy. it took a different direction from what i thought it was gonna be about but i was still hooked by how insane that development was lol. also loved yotsugi in this.
i did not read shinomonogatari as there is currently no full translation since nobody likes it enough to pick it up lmao?? i screamed when i read that covid is canon though
did not enjoy ougimonogatari either but part of that i think is that the translation was to blame. polaris has released a translation of their own since then. i was not very interested in the subject matter/overall theme. it felt weird to be "hooked" by the mention of sexual violence (something that was already explored as early as in hitagi crab) only for it to turn out to be something along the lines of "oh no i didn't mind so i wasn't getting raped but the perpetrator keeps apologizing and saying he raped me". the entity itself was whatever. whatever!!! bonus points for ougi though, always a delight, but still not enough to make up for the overall score. i loved the second half about nadeko's new mission though but was left hanging (ok i was reading a digital version so maybe that's why i didn't see it coming).
ikusamonogatari was pretty boring in the first half. it picked up a little late for my taste. i still enjoyed reading it but most of it felt like fanservice fluff, this was intentional since this was the first release in a while by nisioisin standards. still, the ending was cute!
ok that's it for my detailed review of every novel lmao

Speaking of cyclists, i had an encounter with a male karen on the bus today. He held us all up for no reason. Is there a name for male karens?
I was on a bus, the bus pulled the breaks a bit too late while halting at the red light, he didn’t even touch the cyclist in front. Male karen at the back of the bus comes forward and yells at the driver, cyclist notices the commotion and comes in to try and squash the beef, says its alright, the bus driver didn’t do anything etc
Male karen turns red like a tomato and continues yelling and cussing out the driver even though the driver and cyclist said there’s nothing wrong. He takes the drivers licence plate number.
At this point we’re in traffic and all annoyed at the karen for not dropping it. Male karen calls the police, police take long to arrive, male karen decides to cuss out the cyclist for defending the bus driver. He was defending the cyclist at first but when the cyclist sided with the driver he cussed them both out. I guess his ego got hurt. He made a scene for nothing. 😂
The whole thing was wild. He was yelling like an ogre and everyone was flabbergasted.
you just encountered a craig ‼️‼️ yall shouldve boo'd him off bc what was the reason to call the cops too esp when ur arguing with a damn wall!!!!!! men r so 😐
