Unpopular Shameless (U.S) opinions because I can't get them out of my head
Karen is one of the most overhated characters in the show. Hating Karen for Daddyzgirl but not hating Sheila for her sexual assult of Frank in s1e2 is hypocritical. Especially since that's likely where Karen learned that type of behavior from. Also, many of the other reasons people hate Karen can be pretty easily explained or understood, just like most flaws or bad decisions made by every other character in the show can be explained; for some reason people do not want to extend the same grace to Karen as they do other characters. I think a large part of this is due to the fact that characters used for comedic relief seem to generally be better liked by the fandom, and Karen is not often used as such.
On that note, Sheila had no right to take Hymie at the end of s2. Karen decided to give Hymie up for adoption specifically after the event wherein Sheila got drunk and crashed her babyshower, which ended in literal gunshots being fired. In s3 it's established that Karen called the Wong family because she believes Sheila to be unfit to care for him. While her motivations were likely also selfish, I have no doubt that Karen's personal experiences dealing with Sheila and her lackluster parenting led to her trying to keep Hymie away from Sheila. It's no coincidence in my mind that Karen's personality and her approach to motherhood changed drastically after the babyshower. So, Sheila's decision to take Hymie for herself was not only disrespectful to Karen, but it also pushed Karen to leave home underage and get herself into dangerous situations (which is kinda similar to Ian from s4, huh?)
Debbie is also severely overhated by fandom. I won't argue much for later seasons because I think all the characters suffered a large decline in their writing quality, but regardless, people hate Debbie in seasons 4-6 for reasons that I, again, don't really think are completely valid. I actually think Debbie's most interesting storylines occur in seasons 4-8/9, and I think that her poor decisions earn her a disproportionate amount of hate. I've seen some calling her the worst character on Shameless, and while she can be kinda annoying, I think her storyline honestly makes sense, and her journey into motherhood with Franny is really interesting to look at when you look at her own relationship with Monica.
Speaking of Monica; this is less of an opinion and more of an idea I've had before, but I think it would've been really interesting if we had seen a lot more of Monica. Specifically, I think it would've been cool to see Frank actually die in s4, and then spend s5-7 with Monica instead. Maybe see her popping in and leaving at more frequent intervals and explore more of her relationships with each of the individual kids, as well as seeing more of her antics and schemes instead of Frank's. I wanna know what she gets up to when she's away from home, just like we get to see what Frank gets up to. I think it would've been cool to primarily explore Frank's relationship and impact on the kids in the first part of the series, then Monica's, then after her death really explore the kids on their own without the active influences of their parents. Like Fiona said at the end of s4, the whole idea of "It's not Frank, not Monica, it's me."
Really really unpopular opinion here. Kev and V should've gotten a divorce. I really love them in the early seasons, but seeing them in s5 kinda made me think they weren't good together. I think having an arc of martial struggles and showing them working through it would've been really cool, but I don't really feel like they ever worked through their issues? It feels like the conversations V should've been having with Kev about how she's having trouble connecting with the kids were conversations she was actually having with Svetlana. I think they were shown to always have communication issues, and s5 could've shown growth there in their relationship, but all that happened was that they included a third into their relationship, whom they both eventually started treating very badly, and they fucked their feelings out. I don't feel like they ever reached a good space together. I honestly think an arc of divorce and learning to co-parent would've been best for them. Especially since showing the love in a relationship before and even during a divorce, and how much it really does hurt, would've been very realistic. Sometimes you really do love somebody and sometimes it just doesn't work.
Frank was a worse parent than Monica. People get this idea that Monica ruined Frank, and that he could've been a good father had he not met Monica. I'll say that the logic there isn't logic-ing when Sammy and Queenie are right there. Frank was fucked up before Monica. Even so, Frank was an infinitely worse parent than Monica. There's the mentality of "well at least he was here" but he really wasn't there. When he was he was actively mooching off of his children and bringing danger back into the home. He canonically goes on months long benders. He only returns home when his alternative living situations end up crashing and burning. He uses physical force against his children. Monica ran out on them. She took the squirrel fund money (which Frank did too) and spent it all. In her attempt to be a fun mother she made life actively harder for the kids. She was by no means a perfect mother, but never do I believe that she had malicious intent or a desire to actively harm her children. She's not a good parent, but the idea that she was the worse one pisses me off so bad. This idea that "Frank could've been a good parent" actually applies more to Monica. If she hadn't met Frank and had gotten the help she needed, she could've been a good mother.
I like Sammi in s4 and think she's is a good and interesting character. I don't really like what they did with her in s5, but I do think her calling the MPs on Ian was an interesting plot point. If they'd made an effort to make Sammi likeable in s5 instead of painting her as a psychotic bitch, I think it would've provided more nuance to the end of s5. Especially since, similar to the "Mandy hitting Karen with a car" incident is praised, Mickey almost killing Sammi is seen as a "deserved" moment simply because Sammi was an annoying character. The punishment absolutely does not fit the crime, and while it was accidental, Mickey did fully intend on torturing Sammi and he deserved to go to prison for it. The women of this show really are hated more than they deserve to be, but I blame the decline in writing quality for some of that. Not all of it though.
Ian and Mickey breaking up in s5 was the healthiest thing for them at that point in time. There's mixed opinions on why Ian broke up with Mickey, but I've always been under the impression that Ian didn't want to burden Mickey. Based off his s10 hesitancy to get married, the whole idea of "how do you know you want to be with me, I'm bipolar" suggests to me that Ian was struggling with those feelings immediately post diagnosis, and thus went about a slightly self-destructive route of leaving Mickey before he either got left or ruined them both. I don't think Ian was really correct in that thinking, but I do think that he needed to do some growing outside of a relationship for awhile. I think Mickey also needed to grow a bit. I don't really like how their relationship is handled s7-11, but I think them breaking up and coming back together in a healthier way was the best move for them to avoid ruining each other.
That's all for now maybe I'll add more later but yeah. I love pretty much every character on this show; the whole point is that they're morally gray.

Chapter 22
Marty aside, Veronica and Kevin's wedding day was amazing. V and Fiona managed to tie Marty in the bathroom so that they could get married in the Alibi. Everyone was there.
Carol got so emotional. She had held Desna's hand as V and Kev shared their vows. The Gallagers, of course, had been present. Even Frank seemed genuinely happy, and not only because of the alcohol. Ian had invited Mandy Milkovich. They were still pretending to be dating, but the girl seemed to be pretty content with that accommodation. Unfortunately, though, Karen Jackson came, and she liked to be all over Lip for the entire time. But Desna noticed the way Karen observed her every time she got close to the boy.
She wanted her reaction; Desna was well aware. Karen liked to see Desna get jealous and angry as if to make a point. But she didn't want to give that bitch the satisfaction. Lip cared about her; Desna knew that. And it was enough.
"Do you wanna dance?" Lip asked her as the party started. His voice came from behind her. His lips close to her ear.
"Sure," she answered, taking his hand and letting him lead her to the dancefloor. And she didn't miss it: Karen's glare from across the room, and Desna's smile in her direction. Then her attention went back to Lip when he had pulled her close.
"You look beautiful," he said in her ear with a smirk.
"I hoped you'd like it," she had answered. Desna had chosen to put on a simple purple satin dress. It was comfortable, but it hugged her body perfectly, and when she tried it on, she had no doubt that it was the dress that she would have worn.
"I didn't see this," he said with his hands on her hips. Desna cocked her head to the side with a playful smirk.
"I wanted it to be a surprise," she said, looking into his eyes. His face was so close that she only had to lean over to close the small space between them.
"Oh, yeah?" he asked. His lips turned up in a grin, and she nodded, liking how his hands guided her body closer to his. "I really want to kiss you," he whispered, making her giggle. She wanted it, too.
"Kiss already," Kev's voice made them turn with wide eyes as Kevin and Vee danced next to them.
"What?" Desna and Lip asked at the same time.
"I've figured it out since we spoke about him," Veronica said, looking at Desna as her arms were around her husband.
"And... I mean..." she muttered, "Is that okay?"
"I don't want you pregnant," Vee warned her.
"And no sex when we are in the house," Kev pleaded, "It is traumatic enough to know that you are having sex, bug."
Desna blushed, "Kev!"
Since that day, her encounters with Lip have been easier to organize. Now Fiona, Vee, and Kev knew what was going on, so it was no longer difficult for them to justify why they wanted to spend time together. Desna has also found herself sleeping at the Gallaghers from time to time, but there had been no sex those times since Carl and Ian slept in Lip's same room.
That was why, that morning, she was in Lip's bed, his arm around her, and his eyes still closed, when she finally woke up. Desna turned towards him, smiling as she observed him sleeping. She caressed his cheek lightly as she studied his features. Lip didn't open his eyes, but his arm pulled her closer.
"Morning," she whispered with a little giggle.
"I was awake," Lip muttered. Desna leaned over to peck his cheek. That made him tiredly smile.
"You better," she answered. "We gotta go to school." Lip groaned, making her giggle again. Then, the sound of the door opening made her turn to look in that direction. Desna frowned when she saw who it was.
"Desna?" the boy that had just entered said.
"Warren," she said slowly sitting up, while Lip groaned.
"Lip," the boy said.
"Warren," Lip muttered, his arm adjusting around Desna's hip. He really didn't want to wake up that morning.
"Where's my paper?" Warren asked.
"Where's my money?" Lip's quick reply made her smile. Then his fingers lightly gripped her hip before he started to get up.
"Okay," he said jumping down the bunk bed, "I wanna see it."
As the boys exited the room, Desna jumped down too. She walked towards her clothes, glancing towards the corridor.
"Thirty-five, right?" Warren asked, making Desna shook her head.
"No, fifty," Lip answered. Then Warren started to say strange sounds, stereotyped sounds that people who didn't speak an Asian language thought Asian languages sounded like.
"Stop speaking fake Korean, Warren," Lip said, "I never said thirty-five. Des, did I say thirty-five?"
"Never heard of thirty-five," she answered.
"See, I've got a witness," Lip said. "I've never said thirty-five. Not for the paper I wrote you last month, not for the paper I wrote you last semester, not for this. All right? It's fifty." When he got back, Lip had brought her a brush, which Desna took with a quick 'thank you' as she started to comb her hair.
"Can you do thirty-six?" Warren asked, but Lip refused.
"Thirty-eight?" Desna and Lip looked at each other before Lip sat on Ian's bed. The girl went to the bathroom to quickly change into her clothes and kept listening to what Lip was saying to Warren.
"Now, the fact here is that you, the one Korean I know, made a deal for fifty bucks for an original essay about The Great Goddamn Gatsby," Lip was saying as Desna went back in the room, laying her shoulder against the doorframe, observing him as he took his shirt off, "Yet, once again, you're trying to lower my agreed-upon price. Okay? So I want you to give me fifty or GFY."
Desna smiled.
"GFY?" Warren asked confused.
"Go fuck yourself," Lip said.
Warren let out a frustrated breath, but finally, he gave Lip his fifty bucks.
"Thank you," Lip said cockily, observing Warren leaving the room. Desna let the boy pass, but her eyes remained on Lip. He smirked at her, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Desna crossed the room to stop in front of Lip, who parted his legs so that she could stand between them.
"I told you," she started, putting her hands on his naked shoulders, liking the feeling of his skin under her fingers, "It turns me on when you go all smartass on people." Lip's smirk got wider, as his hands moved to her hips.
"Does it?" He smirked, then moved his hand to the side of her neck, bringing her closer so that their lips could touch. She smiled as they kissed. This situation was becoming rather pleasant. Desna was happy that she and Lip seemed more inclined to spend time with each other, even if it did not involve sex. She liked it.
Suddenly, a buzzing sound made Lip groan as he turned towards where the sound was coming from. Desna took a breath as he stood up to walk to his bed.
“Karen, hey,” she should have known. It seemed like Karen knew when Lip and Desna spent time together. It was becoming more persistent lately.
Lip turned to Desna, who forced herself to smile before starting to put her books back in her bag. “Yeah, sure. No problem,” Lip said. Alright. See you later.”
Silence fell in the room. Desna didn't really want to give Karen Jackson too much thought; she had decided it, and she wanted to keep that promise that she made to herself.
"We-um..." Lip started to speak from behind Desna. "We'll catch up at the school entrance to talk to Oompa."
Desna nodded her head, still not turning to him. "She gave you his contact," she answered simply, "I think it's fair." She heard Lip take a breath, so as she closed her bag, Desna looked at him with a small smile. "What's that face?" she asked, observing his expression. Always thinking, Lip was always thinking.
"Nothing," he shook his head before taking her hand and pulling her closer. She let him guide her until his arms moved around her waist. On his lips appeared a smirk as she moved her hands to lock around his neck, "Where were we?" Desna giggled before his mouth was on hers. She closed her eyes as her fingers went through his locks, to keep him close in the passionate kiss they were sharing. His hands moved from her hips to her ass-cheeks to push her against his body. His fingers grabbed her flesh, and she let out a moan when her phone rang.
"Really?" Lip groaned, making her giggle.
"It's better this way," she said as she took her phone from the front pocket of her jeans, "We have no time."
"I can be quick," she rolled her eyes as she pressed the button to lit up the screen. A frown formed on her face as she saw a message from an unknown number.
Hi. It said.
It had already happened some days before. Probably, someone had just the wrong number, and they kept trying. But why say only 'Hi'. She wondered if she had to write back to tell whoever it was that they were probably searching for someone else. Or they may have figured it out at some point.
"What is it?" Lip asked, observing Desna putting her phone back into her pocket.
"Nothing, wrong number," she said with a smile before taking his hand. "Come on, let's go downstairs."
Desna and Lip made their way to the stairs, and they could already hear the Gallagher family being active and ready for the day. "Lip gave me enough for it yesterday," they heard Fiona's voice, "I picked up a shift and forgot to walk it into the payment center." The oldest Gallagher had Liam in her arms, and she was finishing preparing the lunch for her siblings.
"Everything okay?" Desna asked as she noticed Steve running behind Fiona.
"I just forgot to pay the bill, Des," Fiona said as Steve looked at the money jar with wide eyes.
"Four hundred and thirty bucks?" he asked, "Lip's flushed this month." Desna smiled at Lip as he get past her to go around the counter.
"It's SAT season," Fiona explained.
"He is always flush during SAT season," Debbie explained as she was finishing to get her bag ready.
"SAT?" Steve asked, confused.
"College tests," Ian answered, giving Desna's shoulder a squeeze as he passed behind her.
"He tutors?" Steve asked, but Lip shook his head.
"No, takes," he said with a cocky smile that made Desna chuckle as she fixed Carl's hat.
"Oh, hey!" Ian said to get his older brother's attention. "I got another lead for you." Desna looked at Lip.
"Aren't you fully booked this week?" she asked, and the boy smiled.
"Yeah, I am," he answered before looking at Ian, "Set it up, duche. I'm taking it for someone else today, but there's another session in two weeks." Desna observed Lip with admiration; she knew he was smart, but he always surprised her with how smart he was. She was sure he could have a great future before him. And she hoped he would.
"Don't take the phone today, okay?" Fiona said, "I need it."
"I need it!" Debbie said, making all of them frown.
"For what?" Ian asked.
"Cold calling for babysitting gigs." She explained, "I sound more mature on the phone." Desna smiled fondly at the girl.
"Have you eaten?" Lip asked her as he walked behind her with Liam in his arms.
"Not hungry," Desna answered, "I'll grab something at school."
Finally, Fiona managed to get everyone ready for school, so they left the house to get inside Steve's car. He was a good addition; now they had free rides to school every day and no more waking up early to walk the streets of Chicago in the freezing cold of the morning. His car was big enough for them all to sit inside. Of course, Carl and Debbie would end up on one of their laps, but the ride was quite comfortable.
First, Steve dropped the kids off, and then he drove them to high school. Desna had to keep herself from rolling her eyes when she noticed Karen already waiting for Lip at the school entrance. Lip was sitting in the front, so he didn't notice Desna's reaction, but Ian was sitting next to her, and he caressed her back with an encouraging smile.
Let's do this, Desna said to herself.

Shameless and Princesses
I don't know about you all, but when I'm feeling down I turn to Disney movies. This week definitely calls for some comfort so I made a list of the official Disney Princesses (plus Anna and Elsa) and assigned a Shameless Character to each one.
Snow White - Carl.  Like the OG princess, Carl is a friend to the animals, he had a hard time with the vet job he had. Also Carl has some natural gentlemanly qualities to him much like Snow White’s instinct for household chores. He looks out for his siblings and takes care of them in his own way. Also Snow White, White Boy Carl? There’s something there right?
Cinderella - Fiona. Frank is her ugly alcoholic father. She works hard to take care of her siblings taking on the burden of managing the household and at the end she leaves her abusive home. Cinderella is often characterized through her kindness and even though Fiona is far from perfect, she has a big heart. She sacrificed so much for her family and definitely should have had a fairy godmother to help her out.
Aurora -  Liam. Aurora has the least amount of lines out of any princess and Liam wasn’t doing much for the first part of the show. Also like our Sleeping Beauty, Liam has his own good fairies. His older siblings protect him and take care of him.
Ariel - Debbie.I think it’s easy to put the redhead as Ariel but I actually think they have a lot in common. Ariel longs to see the human world and fights with her dad about it much like Debbie coming at odds with Fiona about growing up too fast and becoming a mom. I can just see Debbie in her room sing/yelling “Bet'cha on land they understand /Bet they don't reprimand their daughters!” Even as an adult that line is very cathartic.
Belle - Mickey. Belle is seen as an outcast because she loves to read (what a nerd) and Mickey is judged because of who his family is. My favorite part of the movie is when Belle returns home to her father because to everyone else he’s crazy old Maurice but she loves him and has to protect him. Mickey has run to protect Ian more than once.
Jasmine - Svetlana. Jasmine is not a prize to be won and neither is Svetlana. Jasmine is trapped behind walls forced to marry a suitor (not to say arrange marriage and prostitution are the same). Svetlana is also longing for freedom and I believe Yevgeny is her own magic carpet that lets her see a whole new world.
Pocahontas - Jimmysteve. He swan dives right into Fiona’s life. They are from different worlds and find love even if just for a brief moment. In the movie Pocahontas iconically throws herself in front of John Smith before her father tries to kill him, but honestly that was a stupid move, she could have died. And Jimmysteve has made many stupid decisions that leave him almost dead.
Mulan - Ian. Both joined the Army under false identities. Mulan also doesn’t let anyone define her and proves that she is not one to be underestimated. To me this is season 6 Ian. He works hard to be seen more as just his bipolar and though he doesn’t save all of China as an EMT he gets to be a hero to many in Chicago.
Tiana - Kevin. OK, so he’s no way near as smart as Tiana but they both come from disadvantaged backgrounds and end up owning their own businesses. Kevin is not good with the numbers or the spelling but he is a great bartender just like Tiana is a great cook. Plus you know Tiana’s restaurant will have some wacky regulars just like The Alibi Room.
Rapunzel - Mandy. They are both trapped in a home by an abusive parent. Terry and Mother Gothel manipulate their children and use the idea of love for their own gain. They both are also fine with violence, Rapunzel with her frying pan and Mandy with her car. Though I wish the circumstances were different, Mandy does get to leave her tower and start to live her life on her own terms.
Merida - Veronica. Both are not afraid to speak their mind. Merida enters the archery competition against her potential suitors and that baller move is something I can see Veronica do. At the heart of it, Brave is about a mother daughter relationship and I love the dynamic between V and her mom.
Moana - Ethel. Girl went beyond that line and crossed that line right out of the southside.
Raya - Franny. I saw Raya and the Last Dragon but I honestly don’t remember it (I think I remember her having a hot dad?). I’m going to put Franny here because I’m sure Franny thinks dragons are cool.
Anna - Karen. Anna totally has abandonment issues and Karen is a perfect case study of it. Because of that they both have an unhealthy view of love and relationships, Anna is infatuated by the first boy she meets and Karen’s love life is extremely messy. I can also see Mandy whispering “Oh Karen, if only there was someone who loves you” before she hits her with her car.
Elsa - Lip. So for the comparison this is actually Frozen 2 Elsa. She wasn’t shown to be a bad queen or anything, her heart just wasn’t in it. Lip is often criticized for not living up to his potential but he just wasn't built for academic life and couldn’t handle the pressure. Like Elsa he steps away and does something else.
