Today I tried a new digital art program--Krita. I like it! It's been a while since I've been able to do any digital art because I needed a new usb hub for my computer, but now I've got that and all is awesome :D I also downloaded BlueStacks so I can post stuff from my computer without sending it to my phone first. Hi! I suddenly got the inspiration to draw and I've been doodling wings for a few minutes, they're honestly the only thing I really know how to draw. Do you have any suggestions on what I could draw to warm up? Or an "rules" a wannabe artist should follow?

There’s no hard and fast rules for warm up drawings. In fact, that’s the fun part – warm ups are all about sketching something freely without stressing about making anything completed or making it turn out perfect. 

What you draw depends on what you like to draw. Since I draw people, my favorite warm up subjects are people. I’ll typically draw a page or two or facial expressions, poses, different angles of the head, chibis (usually just standing around) or full body figure drawing.

I highly recommend you try sketching poses for warm ups. You can draw the general posed shape of wings without adding details. You could also draw bodies this way, even if you don’t know how to draw the details just yet! I usually warm up sketch poses with circles for the head and joints and simple, sloppily sketched outlines for the rest of the bodies.

Here are some recent warm up figure poses I drew using that method:

As you can see, the proportions aren’t perfect, the poses aren’t necessarily referenced from anything to make them turn out just right – I was just drawing from my mind, doodling to warm up. And it worked – I went on to draw several art pieces the same day, and even used one of these poses for one. ♥

Hopefully you got something helpful from all of that blah blah from me there. XD; Basically, with warm ups you should sketch and scribble and not worry about turning out “ART” so much as just get the pen or pencil moving and your brain into a visual mood. Happy sketchin’!
