I will be ur new srk mutual 🫶 which one of his films should I watch first?
such a beautiful ask 🥺
if you're in the mood for a romance movie
1. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge: it's as old as me and still running in a theatre after all these years. it's literally that movie. the biggest reason he's called the king of romance and there wasn't even a kissing scene in this. hasn't aged. beautiful soundtrack. and the infamous mustard field
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. My Name is Khan: 14th feb 2010, 3pm show in a single screen theatre and i had the time of my life watching my first srk movie in "talkies". i was so happy i was gonna cry finally in a theatre and wept i did. he was so fucking good in this kajol's comeback directed by karan johar. lots of tears. and some more. 9/11 background but it's a love story still. he should have won the national award and that jury will end up in hell someday :)
3. Veer-Zaara: romeo and juliet's tragedy is nothing compared to veer-zaara's. the songs the music the acting the actors the director the writer everything was just so good. a lot of people don't know this but eye acting was actually invented by shah rukh khan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Dil to Pagal Hai: a musical about a musical the soundtrack slayyyyed then it slayyyys now. underrated on current tumblr but i think i am starting to prefer that because DTPH is mine. i never had a crush on shahrukh but if any character of his ever came close it was from this movie. one of his sexiest characters imo. did i mention the songs were way too good.
5. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham: shahrukh really cries like children do. who knew weeping can have range. great songs great cast. kajol in orange. srk in see-through shirts. it's actually a family drama but it's fun also his mother in the movie has a superpower.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Om Shanti Om: no bollywood movie has ever bollywooded the way OSO did. love friendship reincarnation hero heroine villain nepotism revenge action comedy great music (and one more thing but that's a huge spoiler) it really just had everything. one of the finest masala movies ever made. it's tumblr's favourite as it should be. also this movie is how i learnt san francisco rhymes with disco
if you're in the mood for thrillers
7. Baazigar: the directors were having trouble finding the lead actor because nobody wanted to take the risk then srk told the producer that nobody can play this role as good as he can and he became the first actor in the history of filmfare to win the best actor award after playing a negative role. a cult classic.
8. Darr: it's the 90s it's the hero heroine villain era when the audiences think the people who play villains are bad people irl and dislike them. sunny deol an already established "hero" is the hero of the movie and srk is the villain a scary stalker and what happened was that the audiences really loved him instead. (my sister got scared of him enough that she started crying in the theatre and my parents had to leave mid-movie a wuss). something that couldn't have been achieved by just anyone except the future king of bollywood. oh lots of switzerland. also the legendary director of the movie kinda adopted srk and started casting him in every movie of his afterwards.
9. Fan: about an obsessed fan (not me just tbc). underrated af.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
about brothers and mothers
10. Karan-Arjun: family evil rich guy poor villagers a mother's wait reincarnation revenge very 90s. used to watch it every time it was on tv. also it was shot in my state 😎
Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. Main Hoon Na: a cool srk entry. action comedy friendships a whole college adopting a grown up as their big bro beautiful sarees the best dressed character who then got a make-over 🥲 (the only one flaw of the movie) a villain (which was getting rare in the 2000s) the best ending credits ever and whatnot. it was farah khan's directorial debut and she brought fun back to bollywood with her bestie <3
the only coming-of-age movie he did
12. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa: i was younger than 4 srk wasn't my favourite "hero" yet but his character from this movie was my first blorbo. my murderous rage awakened for him. the first character i ever related to was also from this movie. gangster uncle 🤜🏾🤛🏾 me. srk was so baby (he was like 28) there was also ra ra rasputin in this. srk loves this movie so do i.

Alia Bhatt says Jigra co-star Vedang Raina reminds her a lot of Ranveer Singh: "Just the way he is and his dedication"
Alia Bhatt is preparing for the release of her new movie Jigra, her first on-screen collaboration with Vedang Raina. In a recent interview with Jr NTR and filmmaker Karan Johar, Alia discussed her experience working with Vedang, who plays her brother in the film. Alia praised Vedang's passion and talent, saying he reminded her of Ranveer Singh, her Gully Boy co-star.
Tumblr media
"Vedang is fantastic." He is great. "I don't think he realizes how amazing he is," Alia stated. The actress went on to recount an emotional sequence they shot together in which Vedang's ability to cry on camera left an indelible effect. "When we filmed a really significant part in which he was crying, I told him that one advantage is that you cry prettily, which is ideal for a Hindi cinema star. He is extremely industrious and instinctive, but he also has some preparation. He reminded me of Ranveer Singh, and I told him so."
"A huge compliment," Alia says. Alia elaborated on Vedang's work ethic, mentioning the attention and focus he gives to every moment. "Just the way he is, with his dedication. I think it's a big complement," she remarked, noting that, despite the parallels to Ranveer, Vedang has his own distinct features. Alia appreciated his musical abilities and described him as a "old soul" with a deep sense of maturity, despite the fact that he is younger than her. "His spirit is well entrenched and centred. "He has a lot of depth, which I believe will take him a long way," she remarked.
Jigra, a film directed by Vasan Bala, is about a sister's love and her passionate will to defend her brother. The film also features Manoj Pahwa and is co-produced by Alia Bhatt's Eternal Sunshine Productions and Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.

a not insignificant amount of my inspiration came from the Ambani wedding, because holy fuck. you might be rich, but are you not THAT rich. And fr, it really highlighted a lot of vieux vs nouveau riche differences, cause the richest man in the world is again Jeff Bezos, but he would not be able to get celebrities to pile onto greyhound buses to attend AND perform at his wedding.
𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞: Peony 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞: Laila Raichand (hindi: लैला रायचंद, arabic: رايشاند ليلى) 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞(𝐬): Lulu, Laddo (not a fan of either, use of the latter is limited to Dadi and Daddy) 𝐀𝐠𝐞: 17 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫: cis-female 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬: she/her 𝐒𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: heterosexual 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲: Feb 19 𝐙𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐜: Pisces

𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭: Recruit.
𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Laila is headstrong, opinionated, and very stubborn. She knows what she likes and doesn't like, and has no qualms about making those feelings known. She does not believe in "giving grace" to people's bullshit, you can have grace if you're a kid, if you're old enough to know better, you should act better. She can seem mean, and that's not unfair, she's VERY biased towards everyone who she considers as part of her circle, if you're outside of that, she can be extremely vicious, especially if you dare to hurt even a hair of one her people. She's not a big believer in forgiveness or second chances. One and done, hun.
Laila is very much the spoiled youngest child, and spoiled only child. She's the only child of her parents, and the youngest of all her cousins, thus getting double doting, and that shows. She's always done whatever she's wanted and gotten away with it very easily. She can be a little (a lot) narcissistic, and vain, but she's not naive nor does she live in a delusional, la la land fantasy where everything is about her and she's the centre of the universe. She does not think that, HOWEVER, she is very aware that due to her very lucky circumstances, a loving, powerful family, she can do whatever the fuck she wants, she doesn't have any pressure to do anything, there's no "you must marry a good/rich man, you must do this job, you must inherit this magic or this business", she's the baby princess, and she knows well how to take full advantage of that.
Laila is a little aloof and not particularly easy to get close to, though she can get along perfectly fine with people, she doesn't really bother to get to know them herself, and considers anyone outside of her circle as simply an extra in her life. She's not interested in being the centre of everyone's attention, except of course when it comes to her family, but that's just youngest child things. She has no problem speaking up in class, but prefers to do her own thing with her friends, and can be a little snobby, especially towards strangers. While she's not inconsiderate, she also won't act to spare someone's feelings. If you're not her friend, you're not her friend, she'll absolutely help a girl out in a sticky situation (always be a girl's girl), but you don't need to have brunch with her afterwards.
𝐒𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞: Laila's personal style is "whatever I like", but in general her wardrobe tends towards classic, chic, and preppy clothes. When it comes to "ethnic" wear, she generally prefers Pakistani salwars, and relies on big brands like Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra for more oppulent event wear. She also prefers salwars and lahengas over sarees, they're pretty but a hassle to wear. She can wear it so long as someone puts it on for her. She also HATES that the culotte trend is back and cannot wait for it die again. Laila is also very much a heel girl, from the first moment she ever got a pair. She's tiny, she needs that feeling of power.
𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲: Daughter of Turkish business woman Aleyna Burakgazi and Indian RAW Agent Vikrant Raichand, Laila is a djinn through her mother, though her father's family is no stranger to the supernatural either. While her father is by all means a normal (aside from his abs, they are not normal), her grandmother is an Astradhari, the bearer of an astra, a divine weapon, specifically the Agneyastra, the astra of the God Agni. She is also deeply knowledgeable about Kala Jadoo (black magic), but claims she does not practise it. It's a very unreliable claim 'cause it's well known that Dadi (paternal grandma) will fuck you up. While their grandmother has not yet decided which heir to make her successor and pass her astra on to, she has made sure to educate all of them of the power of Astras, the Gods, and kala jadoo.
Laila lived with her mother and more immediate extended paternal family (so her father's brother, his family, and their mother) in India until she was about 7, at which point she and her mother moved to Dubai, where her mother took over Raichand Industries Middle East interests. Her father often travels for work, and cannot maintain contact for extended periods of time, so his presence wasn't as constant as his family's, but whenever present he is always doting and spends time with her and her mother. She is definitely a daddy's girl, he's not the whole cause, but a significant amount of her being spoiled is absolutely his fault. But she is also very close to her mother and admires her very much.
Laila does not exactly have the best track record of controlling her djinn abilities, especially when she's angered. It wasn't too much of a problem growing up, she's mostly a homebody and surrounded by family, and people who know about the magical world, so losing control could be easily covered up and often didn't even need to be. However, one time, she, her best friends Kiran and Isabella, and some other friends went to a concert and as they were leaving, some grown ass adult kept hitting on Kiran, and they were literally 12 years old at the time, how disgusting. It was a kids concert too, like what is that guy even doing? Trash. In her annoyance, Laila exploded his hands, she wasn't aiming to do that, but she has no regrets either. That was a little bit harder to cover up, since it was in public, but ya know, it's Dubai, they're rich, buh-bai pedo. This was not the only time she lost control, but she assumes it was probably this incident that got her on the academy's radar.
Before getting the email, Laila was all set to continue her high school level education at the private school she was attending. Honestly, at first she thought it was spam, all the magic training she's received so far has been passed down generation to generation within family, so she wasn't even aware of Thistle Grove Academy's existence. She was unsure of whether or not to attend, she's already got her dadi and taiji (paternal aunt-in-law) for deeper magical instruction, her mommy for the basics, and she's a Raichand, she can get anything she needs at any time. Ultimately, she was convinced to attend by her one of her besties, Isabella, who is a legacy at Thistle Grove and also got the email.
𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬: Djinn (also romanized as jinn, anglicized as genies, as a being can also be analogous to an angel, demon, or fairy, but none are entirely accurate)
𝐀𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 & 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜: Laila has a number of abilities as a Djinn, such as shapeshifting, mind control, astral projection and body possession, however, ultimately each distinct ability is governed by the same factor and all of them can be classified under the singular power of "Essokinesis", the ability to control reality, though Laila was taught that her power is to make HER wishes come true. Some guy touches her friend and she wants his bones to explode? Okay, boom. Papa's work trip is taking too long, oops, suddenly he's back in India. She wants Valyrian silver-gold hair, she got Valyrian silver-gold hair, that one can at least be hidden easily, you know how awkward it is when you're in the middle of a gun fight in an undisclosed location, and then suddenly poof into the centre of a massive Diwali celebration?
Because her magic is linked to her thoughts and desires, it's hard for Laila to control her abilities and prevent herself from making the silliest thing reality, to forcibly keep her powers from manifesting, she usually wears a simple gold taweez (amulet) given to her by her aunt-in-law's father, Zafar Khan Qadri, who is a Sufi of an Indian branch of the Qadiri Order (as a VERY quick, oversimplified explainary, a Sufi is basically someone who practices Islamic mysticism, honestly of the ones I've met and have been told about, they're more like nerds about magic in relation to Islam rather than a magical priest, but whatever, also Sufism is divided into a bunch of orders which all eventually trace back to Mohammad cause he the OG of everything).
𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬: Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Turkish, English, French, Portugese (Brazilian), Italian, Russian
𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲? Pretty chooses pretty? She honestly doesn't know, the general meaning of Peonies is shame, bashfulness, and anger, and like, anger makes sense, but shame? bashfulness? Laila is opposite of that, she's not cinderella, she's the Prince, what does she have to be ashamed about? The meaning of Peonies in China however fits her more, or rather her family, prosperity and honour certainly vibe with the Raichand's and how they value and market their family name.

Hi! 👋 You have nice taste in movies. I saw a handful of Bollywood films on your blog, could you recommend some of your favorites?
Oh my, hi, thank you??
Of course! Disclaimer : I just started getting into Indian cinema this year and I still have a lot to learn and discover.
My first Bollywood movie was Devdas (2002, dir Sanjay Leela Bhansali) with Shah Rukh Khan (remember that name if you're interested in Indian cinema, he's like THE biggest star of the country). It's a period romantic drama film and I basically cried non stop for two hours. The colours! The songs! Aaaaaaaaaaaaah
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, like a lot of people last year, RRR (2022, dir S. S. Rajamouli). That's technically Tollywood (still Indian cinema, just different region and language). Epic period action drama film. It's.... so good? Like no joke my life changed after watching that movie. It's got action, it's got love, it's got incredible music (my top Spotify last year was just the songs of this movie), it's got everything.
Tbh you can watch all of Rajamouli's movies, I think you're safe with them. Baahubali Part 1 and 2 are amazing, Magadheera maybe aged a little bit (very 2000s, painfully 2000s) but is still great. I haven't watched Eega yet but really can't wait, the plot is too weird, I have to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For something more modern, I absolutly loved Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023, dir Karan Johar). Back to Bollywood, it's a romantic comedy family drama. From what I understood, the plot is very basic for an Indian movie, forbidden love, evil grandma, respect of traditions etc etc but as I said, I'm new to all of this, and it was amazing. So, so funny. If you like himbos you'll love the main guy, he's perfect. He says stuff like "Gucci and Prada made love and gave birth to me" or "she's a super woman Wonder Woman Wakanda forever", I love him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope you'll like these! Thank you again for asking I could talk about these movies for days <3

“Tota Roy Chowdhury’s character in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is borrowed from Karan Johar’s childhood,” reveals latter
In an interview, Karan Johar discusses the slurs he received in college for having an effeminate body language.
Tumblr media
Filmmaker Karan Johar has spoken up about being called names in college for having a lewd body language. The latest film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marked Johar's return to directing, and he claimed that the event has remained in his heart ever since.
Johar claimed that he was "very effeminate" as a child and used to dance in his room to Hindi songs in an interview with Film Companion. He claimed that his father, Yash Johar, frequently observed him dancing and clapping and felt it was "great".
When he entered college, things did, however, alter. He insisted, "No one told there was anything wrong at that time. So I grew up thinking (that) this is fine. Much later when you go to college you realise when you carry that through and do those moves, and people look at you and laugh."
Then Karan Johar said, "You're called all kinds of things. There are terms used and it's still in my heart because I grew up with that feeling that I was laughed at for my body language or way of being. Somewhere Tota's character is borrowed from my childhood. When he says ‘Hunar ka koi gender nahi hota (talent has no gender)’, I believe that."
Even though Karan didn't think it was a traumatic event, he did question why other people couldn't accept him for who he was while his own father did.
For the uninitiated, Tota Roy Chowdhury portrays Rani's father, a Kathak dancer who suffers humiliation since his profession is connected to femininity. Rocky's son Ranveer soon joins him and picks up Kathak, responding appropriately to those who made him feel bad. On "Dola Re Dola," Tota and Ranveer give a solid performance.

★ Yash Raj Films delays Tiger vs Pathaan; Shah Rukh Khan-Salman Khan starrer will go on floors only in 2025 and release in 2026!
Nov 30, 2023
Things definitely didn't shape up as well as expected for Aditya Chopra with the Salman Khan led Tiger 3. While the content got mixed feedback from the audience, the industry is also buzzing with chatter around how a conventional Friday release would have benefited the business by pushing the film to Tiger Zinda Hai number. It's Salman Khan's fan following and the franchise value that has taken the film to a lifetime collection of around Rs. 280 crores, getting it a clean hit tag.
And now, Bollywood Hungama has got news that would create a stir in the industry and shock waves on the social media. Highly placed sources have confirmed that Aditya Chopra has delayed Tiger vs Pathaan shoot. "Tiger vs Pathaan was to start in March 2024, but Aditya Chopra has decided to personally take time to rework on the script and serve the audience with better content. Once Siddharth Anand is done with Fighter post production, Adi will sit down with his director to improve the version of what has been written," a trade source told Bollywood Hungama.
The source added that Aditya Chopra wants to put all his focus on the Tiger vs Pathaan script as the idea is to reintroduce Tiger to the audience at its ferocious best. "Tiger is the most senior spy of the YRF Universe and the idea is to present it in a way that takes audiences on a ride. Aditya Chopra knows that the expectations will be off the roof in the audience for the face off of Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in Tiger vs Pathaan. There is no room for compromise and all the energies are invested to better the film," the trade source added.
Interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan also had a discussion with Aditya Chopra recently, and conveyed his thoughts on the potential to improve the writing of Tiger vs Pathaan. "Shah Rukh considers the YRF Universe to be close to his heart as Pathaan played a role in introducing his action image. He told Adi that he stands by his side and will be ready to shoot the film whenever Adi is ready with the script. Salman is also on the same page, and hence green lit the shoot timelines for Karan Johar's film from February 2024. Shah Rukh Khan in the meantime will be shooting for The King from January."
It's a consensual decision taken by the top 3 industry giants, in an attempt to provide a world class cinematic experience to their audiences. Tiger vs Pathaan will now go on floors in 2025 and is likely to release in the year 2026.

"No one brings the kind of energy to a film set that Ranveer Singh does," Karan Johar
Karan Johar’s production Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani has crossed the 100 Cr. Mark on the box office. The film is getting a lot of praise for its storyline, Alia Bhatt acting as well as the blast of energy that Ranveer Singh brings to the sets. Karan Johar, in a recent interview, talked about how he got a ‘cultural shock’ seeing the energy that Ranveer has as he had worked with Ranbir Kapoor earlier who is exactly the opposite.
"No one brings the kind of energy to a film set that Ranveer Singh does," Johar said. "And before this, I had worked with Ranbir (Kapoor), who used to come to the set with a very calm, composed energy during Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. It was a cultural shock for me."
Karan continued, "Then I realized that all the hard work he (Ranveer) puts in, all that enthusiasm and passion he brings, is solely and purely to enhance his performance. I haven't seen this kind of energy before, and I won't see it again, but I knew one thing: he was the most indispensable character in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. There would be no Rocky Randhawa if there wasn't Ranveer Singh."
In the same interview, Alia Bhatt also opened up about family values and how the support of the family plays a key role in creating a person. She talked about the time she took help from Shahrukh Khan for a song in the film RRKPK.
Recalling the incident, she said that she was unable to lip-sing for one of the songs in the film and was guided by Karan to take help from Shahrukh. Alia went on to lengths talking about how Shahrukh taught her the best trick and was so humble about it.

Exploring the Evolution of Desi Cinema: A Global Phenomenon
Tumblr media
Desi cinema, a vibrant and multifaceted domain, refers to the film industries of South Asia, primarily those from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. But when most people mention "Desi cinema," they often mean Bollywood—India's Hindi-language film industry. However, to focus solely on Bollywood is to miss the rich diversity of cinematic traditions that have emerged from this culturally and geographically varied region.
This blog post aims to explore the evolution of desicinema, its global influence, and how it has transitioned from regional storytelling to a powerful force on the global entertainment stage.
The Roots: Traditional Storytelling and Early Cinema
Before the advent of cinema, storytelling in South Asia was primarily oral, passed down through generations in the form of folktales, mythological epics, and performances like dance-dramas and theatrical productions. The cultural legacy of these traditional forms heavily influenced the development of cinema in the subcontinent.
The first recorded instance of filmmaking in India can be traced back to the late 19th century. In 1913, Raja Harishchandra, the first full-length feature film by Dadasaheb Phalke, marked the beginning of Indian cinema. It was a silent film that adapted Indian myths and folklore into a visual narrative.
However, the true flowering of Desi cinema began in the 1940s and 1950s, as the rise of regional film industries—like the Tamil film industry (Kollywood), Telugu cinema (Tollywood), and Bengali cinema—gave birth to new filmmaking styles, genres, and storytelling techniques. Directors like Satyajit Ray in Bengal revolutionized Indian cinema with his Apu Trilogy in the 1950s, which focused on humanist themes and portrayed India's socio-cultural realities with sensitivity and depth.
The Golden Age: Bollywood Dominance
By the 1950s and 60s, Bollywood, which had already existed in its early stages since the 1930s, began to establish itself as the dominant force in Indian cinema. Films from this era were marked by larger-than-life stories, elaborate song-and-dance sequences, and strong emotional appeal, which resonated with both rural and urban audiences. Bollywood's penchant for grand romance, family dramas, and escapist fantasies created a unique cinematic language that could transcend linguistic and regional barriers.
Key figures like Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Madhubala, and Meena Kumari became household names, and their films gained a cult following not just in India, but across the globe. In the 1970s and 80s, Bollywood evolved further with stars like Amitabh Bachchan, who became iconic for his roles in action-packed blockbusters like Sholay (1975) and Zanjeer (1973). During this period, the genre of the masala film emerged, blending action, drama, comedy, romance, and music into a single package that catered to a wide audience.
Post-1990s: Globalization and the Rise of NRI Cinema
The 1990s ushered in a new era for desi cinemas with the global expansion of Bollywood films. Economic liberalization in India, combined with the growing influence of the Indian diaspora, transformed the way Desi films were made and consumed. The advent of satellite TV and the internet brought Bollywood films to millions of homes worldwide, from the Middle East to the United States, the United Kingdom, and beyond.
Filmmakers like Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra, and Karan Johar capitalized on this trend by making films that explored themes of identity, love, and cultural assimilation for the NRI (Non-Resident Indian) audience. Movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) became cultural touchstones, resonating with both Indians living abroad and international audiences who were drawn to the romance and spectacle of Bollywood.
Simultaneously, other regional film industries like Tollywood (Telugu), Kollywood (Tamil), and Mollywood (Malayalam) gained prominence both within India and internationally, producing films with distinct storytelling traditions. For instance, Telugu cinema's Baahubali series (2015-2017) became a global sensation, demonstrating the massive appeal of regional films on the international stage.
Contemporary Desi Cinema: Diversity and Innovation
The 21st century has witnessed an explosion of diversity within Desi cinema. Bollywood continues to dominate, but now it faces competition from other regional industries. Filmmakers are increasingly experimenting with content, blending genres, and telling stories that push boundaries and explore pressing social issues. Films like Gully Boy (2019), Article 15 (2019), Andhadhun (2018), and Dangal (2016) have been successful not only in India but internationally, gaining recognition at film festivals and even securing global distribution.
Bollywood's content has evolved significantly, with greater emphasis on social issues such as gender equality, caste discrimination, and mental health. The emergence of streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar has also had a significant impact, providing a space for films with niche or unconventional themes to find an audience. These platforms have made Desi cinema accessible to a global audience, breaking down geographical boundaries and allowing for more diverse narratives.
Moreover, the success of films from Pakistan like Khuda Kay Liye (2007) and Cake (2018), as well as Sri Lankan cinema's growing presence on the international stage, underscores how Desi cinema is not limited to India but is a broader, regional phenomenon with a distinct voice.
The Global Influence of Desi Cinema
Desi cinema's influence has also gone beyond the screen. The vibrant world of Bollywood music, with its catchy tunes and intricate choreography, has influenced global pop culture. The Bollywood dance style has found its way into international music videos and performances, and major Western artists like Beyoncé and Madonna have incorporated elements of Indian dance and fashion into their works.
Actors like Priyanka Chopra, Irrfan Khan, and Dev Patel have become global stars, representing the growing international appeal of Desi cinema. Bollywood itself has also increasingly embraced Hollywood collaborations, with films like Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and The Lunchbox (2013) gaining worldwide acclaim.
At the same time, Desi cinema has influenced other global film industries. For example, the fast-paced, action-packed style of Bollywood has inspired filmmakers in the Middle East, Africa, and even Latin America. Indian cinema’s emotional depth and dramatic flair have been admired and adopted in various forms across the world.
Conclusion: The Future of Desi Cinema
As Desi cinema continues to evolve, it is embracing an exciting future marked by bold storytelling, technological innovation, and cultural exchange. The proliferation of digital platforms, the success of regional films on the global stage, and the increasing representation of South Asian narratives in mainstream Western media suggest that the world is ready for more of the unique flavor that Desi cinema has to offer.
For audiences, whether they are tuning in from India, Pakistan, the UK, or anywhere else, Desi cinema offers not only entertainment but also an opportunity to engage with a dynamic, diverse, and ever-evolving cultural landscape. It’s no longer just about Bollywood. It's about a global phenomenon with stories that resonate universally while celebrating the distinct cultural identities that make Desi cinema so unique.
So whether you're a fan of the glitz and glamour of Bollywood or a lover of the raw, powerful narratives emerging from regional cinemas, one thing is clear: Desi cinema is here to stay, and its influence will only grow stronger in the years to come.

Karan Johar introduces a new age of romance with Lakshya and Ananya Panday and declares Chand Mera Dil.
Karan Johar and Dharma Productions are preparing to work with their beloved talents, Lakshya and Ananya Panday, on a beautiful romance story. The producer-filmmaker has been teasing audiences on his social media platform about Dharma's return to the romance genre, and he has now unveiled a new movie called Chand Mera Dil, which stars the Kill famous action hero and the popular Gen Z actress.
Tumblr media
On Thursday, Karan Johar and Dharma Productions' official social media handle unveiled several posters from their new film Chand Mera Dil, which explores Ananya Panday and Lakshya's hitherto unseen relationship. As promised by the filmmaker, the posters depict a touching, entertaining, modern story of romance between two young people - a guy next door and a simple girl next door. Ananya also appears in an ethnic manner, which is distinct from her recent releases, such as Kho Gaye Hum Kahan and CTRL.
Interestingly, Lakshya, who was meant to begin his film career with another Dharma Productions project, has now collaborated with the production house for the second time with this romantic drama. While fans saw his action-packed side in the gory action movie Kill (2023), which won positive reviews at film festivals, the former television star promises to show off his romantic side, if the posters are any indication. Similarly, Ananya will appear in a traditional romantic drama for the first time. While the actor has previously explored themes of romance and comedy, this will be her first experience with a lovely love story.
While most of the film's details are kept under wraps, the tagline is "Pyaar thoda paagal hona padta hai (One should be a little mad in love)". The film, directed by Vivek Soni, is scheduled to be released in 2025.
