Content Warning: It is very lightly implied but there’s part of this that may be upsetting.
Kara bolted awake to the sound of a scream, and when she bolted awake, she bolted. Her forehead thumped the ceiling and someone in the loft above hers yelled for her to stop that fucking racket, but it didn’t matter. The blood curdling, gurgling shriek of terror was still ringing in her ear and she had but a single thought: Lena.
She threw up the sash of her window so hard the wood chipped and leaped into space, alien power folding the air behind her so hard that the entire building shuddered, and she had to stop herself from going hypersonic and breaking every window on the block.
It was Lena. Her voice cut through the constant barrage of human and mechanical and animal noises around her. It sliced through a wall of arguing spouses and sighing lovers and wailing sirens, through the secret language of cats and the grinding of the tectonic plates beneath all their feet. It was not a mere scream but a shriek, a wail of agony and terror that made her blood freeze even as she rocketed through the city in a blur, dozens of pedestrians looking up as she blasted overhead.
Lena’s place was across town, an hour on foot- for a human. Kara made it at the speed of thought, arriving so fast that Lena was still screaming as she landed and wrenched open the balcony door and stormed through the penthouse.
When she brushed open the bedroom door she found a cowering Lena curled in the corner in a pile of bedsheets, staring at nothing, shaking violently and shrieking.
Kara jabbed the comm bead in her ear.
“Alex!”
“What?” Alex said, groggily. “Kara? What time is it? Why… who’s that screaming?”
“It’s Lena. I need help. It’s like she’s still asleep but she’s screaming and her eyes are open. She’s not reacting to me.”
“What the hell is she doing at your apartment at three in the morning?”
“I’m at her place. I heard her screaming and flew.”
Alex let out a pained sigh. “Please tell me you remembered the suit.”
Kara looked down at her threadbare pajamas and frowned.
“Yep, sure did. What do I do?”
“Get off me!” Lena choked out, “get off me!”
Her eyes wide wide with horror, but worse, her heart was beating incredibly fast, her pupils tiny points. She began swiping at nothing with hooked fingers, tangling herself in the sheets, which only drove her into a deeper frenzy. L
“Alex! What do I do?”
“Try to get her back into bed. Gently. Speak slowly and calmly.”
Kara nodded. “Lena?”
She was met with another round of screams.
“Lena, it’s me, it’s Kara. I’m hear to help you.”
“Kara?” Lena choked out. “No, you have to go, you can’t, they’ll hurt you too.”
“No, they wont,” Kara said, soft but firm, kneeling in front of her. “No one can hurt you when you’re with me. I’ll protect you.”
Kara gently placed her hands on Lena’s shoulders. Her skin was fever hot and a vein stood out on her forehead, tears flowing freely down her cheeks.
Very slowly, Kara began to shift her towards the bed, finally giving up and lifting her entirely. Lena clung to her in a full body arms-and-legs hug.
Alex crackled in her ear.
“Stay there. I’ll have J’onn do a sweep of the area just to be sure.”
“Don’t go,” Lena murmured, “Kara please, don’t go please.”
“I’m right here and I’m not leaving,” Kara said, lowering her to the bed.
It was… awkward. Kara had no choice but to climb in with her. She grabbed an armful of silk sheets and down comforter and sheltered them both within it, packing herself up into a tight roll with Lena, arms locked around her.
Lena’s screaming had stopped but she still seemed unaware, her focus entirely on Kara as she sobbed lightly into her chest.
“It’s okay, I’ve got you, it’s okay,” Kara repeated, like a mantra, lightly running her fingers over Lena’s scalp.
“You’re safe, I promise.”
Lena buried her face in Kara’s throat and sobbed. Kara continued to stroke her hair, and almost without realizing it, started singing.
“Kara,” Alex said in her ear, “the channel is still open. Kara, you’re singing a Kryptonian lullaby!”
She didn’t care. She jabbed her ear to silence the little voice and continued to sing, the same song her father used when she had nightmares in the groundquakes when their world was shaking itself apart.
Lena’s breathing finally slowed. The tension slid out of her and her breathing and pulse eased. She fell into a deep, deep sleep.
Kara could leave now, if she wanted. Skip away and let Lena think it was all a dream, though she might wonder what happened to the lock on her balcony door.
She could, but a promise was a promise.
Eventually, her own lullaby lulled her to sleep, and she drifted off into a dreamless rest of her own.
When the sun draped a warm touch across her skin and Kara opened her eyes, she found herself oddly well rested for someone who’d woken up at three in the morning and flown across town. Lena dozed lightly in her arms, tucked against and under Kara so naturally it was as if they were made to slot together this way. Kara lay turned and curled around Lena, a fortress of living walls around her smaller frame, even as she clung to Kara’s waist.
She still had time to leave, to let the night be a mystery… but something stopped her. She wasn’t sure if it was the soft, sweet scent of Lena’s hair or the way Lena’s breath tickled her throat or the soft weight of her or the delightful sensation of her breasts pressed against Kara’s own but she needed this, she wanted this.
Lena was looking at her.
“Are you real?” she whispered.
“It’s me, Lee.”
“Why are you here?”
Kara licked her lips and sorted through fifty lame excuses. What would it be this time? Lena butt dialed her in the middle of a night terror? She forgot her hairbrush?
No.
“I heard you screaming and I flew here to protect you.”
Lena blinked, clearly groggy, her brows pinched in consternation as she worked it out. Kara waited.
“Oh,” Lena said, finally.
“Yeah,” said Kara. “I can go if you’re upset, or you need time,” her voice grew thick, “or if you’d rather not see me anymore.”
“No,” Lena snapped, almost angrily, then more softly, “please stay. I’d like you to stay, I… I need you to help me feel safe for a while.”
Kara nodded.
“I had a terrible dream. It was so real. I dreamed Lex sent people after me in my office, but they weren’t there to throw me off the balcony this time. I tried the gun I keep in my desk but it had no effect on them, and Jess didn’t hear me screaming and no one would help me.”
“It wasn’t real,” Kara murmured. “That will never happen. I will always be there when you need me.”
“What if you’re too far or you’re too busy?”
“I’m never too busy and I’ll never be too far. I’ll give you a signal watch.”
“A signal watch?”
Kara nodded. “Like my cousin gave James. If you use it I’ll be able to find you anywhere.”
“God, Kara in can still feel the hands on my throat. It was so real.”
“It wasn’t, I promise. I’m real. Can you feel me?”
Lena suddenly seemed a touch embarrassed, but didn’t pull away.
“I can definitely feel you.”
“Good. You’re safe. We don’t have to get up yet. Just lay here with me in the sun and you’ll be safe.”
There was a knock at Lena’s door and they both jumped.
Alex’s voice crackled in her ear.
“I’m at the door, Kara. Let me in.”
“Kara? What’s going on?” said Lena.
“Alex is at the door.”
Kara started to slip out of bed and Lena almost frantically followed her, pressing close behind. Kara looked through the door -a little relieved that Lena hadn’t lined it with lead- and saw Alex standing there in full agent gear. She opened the door.
Alex raised a brow. “Am I interrupting something?”
“Yes,” said Kara. “We were going back to sleep.”
Alex swept into the apartment.
“J’onn caught a guy. Two-bit mercenary hack, calls himself Doctor Destiny. Uses a drug to enhance latent psychic abilities- he’s a dreamer, messes with people’s heads while they sleep. J’onn gave him a taste of his own medicine.”
Lena tensed beside her, and Kara felt it.
“Alex, where is he now?”
“Back at headquarters in a holding cell. I made arrangements for him to be transported to Belle Reve, with a cape escort.”
Kara paused for a long moment.
“Alex, can you stay with Lena for a few minutes?”
Lena paled even further, the blood draining from her face.
“Kara?”
“I won’t be gone long, baby. I’ll be right back, I promise.”
“Baby?” said Alex.
“Shut up,” Kara snapped.
Lena gave her a slight nod of assent.
Kara decided to make this quick. She flew home first, changed, and landed on the DEO balcony all in less than five minutes. When she reached the holding cells, she told the guard on duty to get a coffee and let herself in.
He was an unassuming man, average height and build with scruffy hair and a five o’clock shadow. He looked more like a petty crook that got caught robbing a corner store, less like a supervillain.
“You’re ’Doctor Destiny’?”
“That’s right.”
“Did you do this on your own or were you hired?”
“Fuck off,” he said, with a shrug. “I’m going to the hole until Waller comes in to cut me a deal. You’re a Supe, you don’t scare me. Maybe send the Bat if you want to-“
Kara took two steps across the cell, seized his throat in a crushing grip that almost crushed his windpipe, and pinned him to the wall like a struggling insect beneath a sadistic child’s thumb.
“What the fuck?” he croaked out.
Kara turned her head slightly and hit the wall with a pop of heat vision that scorched the concrete and left a warm red spot.
“What the fuck?” he said again.
“I can see it,” Kara said, her voice as cold as ice. “I can see the little quirk in the back of your brain that gives you powers. One little blink and it’s gone.”
“You wouldn’t.”
“It’s too bad that there’s some important structures in the way, but you probably don’t need those language and motor skills.”
“You can’t!” he screamed.
Kara leaned in close, eyes smoldering so that he could feel the heat begin to sting his flesh.
“Wrong. I’m Supergirl. I can do anything.”
“Jesus fucking Christ! It was Edge! Morgan Edge! He paid me fifty grand!”
“Fifty g-“ Kara snarled, gritting her teeth. “Listen to me. They’re taking you to Belle Reve. I want you to tell everyone there. Everyone, do you hear me?”
“Tell them what?”
“If anything happens to Lena Luthor, I have no rules.”
“Okay,” he said, “I’ll tell everyone I promise! I swear!”
Kara let go and turned, ignoring his cries as his knees hit the concrete floor, and slammed the cell shut behind her.
When she landed on Lena’s balcony, Alex was sitting with her on the couch. The color had come back to Lena’s cheeks and she no longer looked small and frightened, her eyes no longer darting to corners and thresholds as if she expected something to pop out from behind them.
“Lena is going to pack a few bags and come stay with you for a few days,” said Alex. “I convinced her that crashing on Supergirl’s couch is a better security system than what she’s got, and while she’s out I’m going to have our tech team integrate her security into the DEO so we’ll know instantly if she’s in trouble.”
Lena nodded at all of this.
Kara knelt before Lena and gently took her chin by a curled finger and raised her gaze.
“You’re under my protection,” she said. “I swear it.”
Lena’s eyes sparkled and she gave Kara a soft smile, cupping Kara’s hand in her own.
“Okay, Brave Sir Kara, let’s take milady Luthor back to yonder castle.”
“Shut up,” Kara muttered.
The trip home seemed to calm Lena even more, as she laughed at the two sisters bantering with each other after Kara changed and climbed into Alex’s car, leaning forward from the back seat to poke her head between Lena and Alex and tease her sibling.
Lena ended up staying a full two weeks.
The “sleeping on the couch” concept didn’t even last the first night.

@chassycat-original To me those cut lines in season 2 about lying to protect the people you love are very interesting because it really makes me question to what extent certain things were preplanned.
Respectively, to what extent the current Supergirl writers either follow a larger plan or at least picked up on the secrets theme as one of the core themes to explore on the show.
I wrote an entire entry, before I knew about any cut lines, about how Karamel’s conversation in 100 has a lot of additional depth because it reminds people that Kara is not a hypocrite. She was in a situation where she was lied to by a loved on, arguably in even worse circumstances (because it was a selfish lie, because it was a lie about something bad) and she was much more forgiving. So her absolving herself from her guilt feels earned. Because when the shoe was on the other foot, even in a much worse kind of way, Kara only took a very short while to come around and never stooped to any sort of revenge against Mon-El other than some snippy remarks.
I do not think that that was always the grand plan, I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that Lena was originally supposed to be only a short term character and was only offered a contract as a regular after she was well received in season 2, but the concept of Mon-El lying about being the prince was clearly planned before that.
I’ve always thought of the show laying down the reason why Kara lies to Lena as something that felt “new” in season 3 and 3B explicitly, so it’s interesting that it is something that the writers had already decided in season 2. (to me it always felt like season 2 felt like the writers almost forgot that maybe it would make sense to give Kara a concrete reason to lie to Lena when Kara actually is very quick to be open about her secret with almost all other regular characters, so to me that felt almost like 3B was fixing something that that felt a bit sloppy in season 2).
It never sat right with me personally that season 3 Karamel’s story can be boiled down to there being a secret that Kara never finds out (even though it can be argued where exactly the political marriage falls on the secret spectrum, whether it is even a secret strictly speaking since Kara never asks about it (even though Brainy for example openly refers to Titan Alliance) and hence Mon-El never lies about it and generally doesn’t really treat it as a secret, it also generally seems to skew closer to a heroic deception the way Kara’s identity is).
I’ve always been puzzled by the question what exactly the writers had planned for Karamel’s central conflict to be if Mon-El hadn’t left. And I guess we’ll never know.
It’s still interesting to read the subsequent seasons to being riffs of the question of secrets (the concept of heroic secrets again being explored in the Kara and Alex story in season 4 and of course the fallout of Kara’s secret being explored in season 5). This again bringing up the question of when exactly they came up with those parallels and themes. Personally, I’m rather open to the concept that they decide the themes and plots of the season only at the beginning of each seasons and they revert to “let’s do secrets” simply because it’s an oldie, but goodie.
To me the choice of this theme has always felt a bit weird, because to me this just didn’t feel like a huge aspect of season 1 (like at the most of it a little bit in the very beginning when Kara finds out about the DEO) and even season 2 (so it’s interesting to know that that was supposed to be there, it just ended up being cut). Mostly to me Kara rarely felt like she was experiencing that much guilt or that many downsides from having a secret, compared to many other characters who keep secrets. Particularly because Kara’s cast of support characters who know is just that large, it very rarely felt like she was missing out the way other characters do who for example keep their secret from their families.
(compare that to Clark in Smallville for example, yes his parents knew, but his first friend, Pete, didn’t find out till season 2, his next friend Chloe, kind of the his “Winn” didn’t find out till season 5, Clark’s ‘James” Lana didn’t find out till season 6, so for the longest time Clark didn’t have this rich support system that Kara has always enjoyed)
I’m not sure whether I believe the writers will be consistent enough to stick with the theme of secrets all the way through or whether they consider that topic over now that Lena knows. (though in theory this topic could be revisited again if now Alex maybe also has to have a secret hero identity?) If they stick with it, I wonder what exactly constitutes a “happy end” for a secret plot, especially since the show has already decided that “Kara tells her secret to the world and everything fine” is not an option for their in show universe. Just Kara having a rule of letting in everybody she spends substantial amounts of time with? Lena officially acknowleding that Kara was justified all along? (I now I joked before that if the writers were serious about how important Kara’s secret is, then the logical end to season 5 would have been Lena offering to have her memory wiped that way Alex did, but yeah, I’m not counting on that) Kara telling the next person (William) and he is completely chill and supportive? If the show continued on longer then I could see Kara telling William, him being supportive but it gets him killed as a sensible way to deepen the topic, but that isn’t a thread that really makes sense if it’s the last season, because it would be too bleak.
(did I mention recently how much it galls me that Kara never found out about the specifics of the Titan Alliance, with there being basically zero chance imo that that will change since I don’t think that they will bother trying to get Imra back to do this story)

Chapter III
Since the fortunate dinner, Kara became a totally new person. It went from regular dinner to quick self-discovery within 24 hours. She sometimes can act ‘stupidly’ by randomly texting false numbers from her phone in order to get another package of Morgan and Jake. Obviously, it didn’t work. Hannah just happened to be one of few people that could handle Kara’s antics when it comes to this kind of matter.
On the other hand, Kara and Hannah on their way to pick up a precious yet, annoying package; Khaled. Kara’s younger brother and only sibling is in college doing his bachelor’s degree in political studies. Truthfully for Hannah, she felt better to hang around Kara with Khaled along the way since she’s the youngest among her siblings and it’s no fun for Hannah when she has a huge age gaps between her brothers. Between the casual stops for traffic lights, they both eager getting their conversation on-going before it fell into the pit of silence once again. Their conversations can strike up from any topics until Hannah decided to break the ice that has been froze the car for a-good-solid 5 minutes.
“What about Dylan? He can accompany you to your company dinner.” Kara nearly stopped her range rover and was too shocked.
For Kara, Hannah might give her the best option but Dylan would be the last person on Earth she asked on. It was because of an old story that Kara won’t move on about it. It was back in high school. The recent Kara with perfect smile, beautiful body proportion and amazing hair, isn’t the same with high school Kara. She was way sloppy back in high school but Hannah didn’t mind because she needed Kara’s tutoring for Chemistry since it was hell for Hannah. When Dylan knew the real Kara, he still stuck to his old self, not even a bit of change.
Well, Dylan is actually a great friend for both of them but boys sometimes tend to do ridiculous stuff before they realise it’s absolutely wrong. For Kara, move on from her high school phase is one of the easiest part but forgetting Dylan, absolutely not. Hannah kept on giving ‘advice’ to just forget what ever happened at school, stays at school but Kara still planning on her so-called ‘revenge’ for Dylan.
Teasing is his part time job until Kara slowly came out of her comfortable cocoon and start roasting Dylan whenever she meets him. “I mean he’s our friend other than each other.”
“What about you?” Kara looked her right and raised her eyebrow at Hannah. “Girl, I have a flight to ‘drive’ on that date. It’s already scheduled.” she winked.
“What’s so bad about Dylan that you haven’t move on? Are you still in your high school phase, Miss Braun?” Hannah continued. Kara stated her facts that Dylan was too immature to call her slop-girl for whatever reason in his weird head. All-in-all arguments, there’s still one fact that Kara can use to fire back Dylan, “I helped him not only passed but graded an A for his maths. I should get a credit for that!” Kara blurted and Hannah giggled in excitement on her best friend - one of her best friends.
4 years in college right after high school, Kara excelled passed her bars exam and have her license to practice laws in court. It was an uncommon thing for her family to have her studied law since her parents come from a business-run company and looks like, Khaled also played his role on not going with the business flow. It was their choice and their parents never avert them or force them to be in the business world. Since Kara entered college, she has never heard a single word about Dylan, not until recent breakout on the internet that made her laugh in greater amusement.
Let’s just say, boys can make terrible decision when it comes to appearance. “By the way, I didn’t know you’re his designated driver.” Hannah said from the passenger seat once they turned right from a junction, straight away to the college’s entrance.
Finding parking area for cars is easy in campus but not when it’s a peak hour where most students brought their car along to the campus and Kara is not taking any chance to get clamped today. “I wonder where the heck his dorm area is.” She said while making their way to the college park; Andrews Park. There weren’t much students around since it’s class hours and Khaled just got lucky enough to have his class cancelled last minute. Perks of having a pregnant lecturer.
Khaled on the other hand, packing his stuffs into his 2 duffel bags - mostly laundry and several textbooks for his recent 'Political ties effect on economic growth and nations’ prosperity’. It was a headache for Khaled or any students but he just endured it like any students do. Seeing that Khaled only have his single morning class, he has been demanded Kara almost every week to pick him up on every pre-semester break instead of taking trains or ride an Uber home. It’s on weekend and Kara obviously don’t work on weekends.
He walked downstairs from his dormitory block with 2 duffel bags, each on one side and a bag pack on his bag. He shouldn’t complain about the bags’ weigh since he’s a track & field athlete and he always has his weight training. “Ma’ homies are here!” he called and the two women turned their gazed to Khaled. That’s just how he called Kara and Hannah sometimes. They walked back to the car after he settled his bags in the trunk. Once he sat in, he grunted and growled in deep sighed. Totally different from his cheerful atmosphere just now. Khaled said that he might have to add one more subject to add more credit hours – graduation matters as Hannah asked as they strapped in. “Having another subject for next semester? Good luck with that!” Hannah gave her thumbs up.
“You’re just lucky to graduate your bachelor’s the same year Kara graduated high school.”
“She’s too smart!” Kara drove her red range rover into the familiar road, trailing their tracks into another way to find their brunch spot. Since none of them has their breakfast except for Khaled. He always hungry, like his food hormone crept up on him almost every minute.
“Speaking of being a student. I know, it’s hard and it’s full of stress. We all have been in that phase …”
“What do you want, Kara Lee-Ann Braun?” Hannah laughed when Khaled used Kara’s full name. That’s just mean he’s being serious and uninterested in playing any tricks to any of them. And these two siblings probably the worst when it comes to fishing each other doing stuff they wanted before stating the real thing. “Do you want to be my plus one for my company dinner next week?”
“I would if the dress code allowed me to wear PJs not some formal suit. I can’t stand being in suit while eating those miniatures they served. And, don’t you think it’s weird that they all wear almost the same thing to the event, yet, complement each other like they love the dress. They hate it and they’re good in faking it. Plus, I need real food.” That just blew their mind.
    Event confirmation: Khaled isn’t going.
The ride went silence afterwards. No one dare to speak once Khaled shut everyone off. Maybe he’s too hungry? or too stress? That’s what Kara and Hannah thought. Eventually, they came into a familiar town nearby their house neighbourhood. “What are we having for brunch?” Kara made the first move, hoping that Khaled would gave some suggestion.
“I don’t mind. My type is a place serving real food!” Hannah accidently snorted, preventing herself from laughing too much on that statement of real food once again. Few restaurants passed, still, no luck. Not because it wasn’t Khaled’s type or what, but none of it open yet. Few turns made and they found a fish grill restaurant and bar, and it’s opened. Once Kara parked the car, Khaled literally ran in to pick a table. Looks like he’s too hungry!
The waiter assisted with the menu booklets and will entertained these 3 parties after few minutes given. It’s their first time and the menu have lots of good stuff about fish and other seafood. It was too good that they didn’t realise what to order until the waiter came back. “My name is Sam and I’ll be your waiter for today. What can I get you today?”
"I’ll have the salmon brunch set with iced mocha.“ Khaled drew his order and closed the menu booklet. Hannah looked at him as if he needs to calm down, his menu will get to the table early than we expected since there are only 5 customers at the moment including the 3 of them “I’ll have the ahi tuna and jumbo squid set, Greek salad and sparkling water would do.”
Kara didn’t speak out her order like these two did. She leaned in and whispered her 'secret’ menus to the waitress. There was nothing besides nodding and smiling, like it’s a common thing to do. “What did you order that’s so secretive?” Khaled raised his eyebrow looked suspiciously at Kara. They insisted her to tell but she kept in secret and asked them both to wait until the meal comes.
It didn’t take long before they all change their conversations. Khaled, too, suggested Dylan to drag with for the event. Although Khaled didn’t know what happened between the two of them, “He’s seems okay-great to be your plus one. Better than me, of course.”
The waiter came right after and served their meal on the plate, except of for Kara. She got 2 plates of identical menu. “HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Kids meal? Really?” Kara blew her invisible bangs and sipped the water, trying to be sassy as she can. Kara mentioned that she’s saving money and her cutting cost thing/project became a serious thing now and its way more effecting her diet. “I’m saving for my world trip.” Hannah couldn’t really blame Kara for that even she’s working as a prosecutor, making her salary almost the same par as Hannah’s. Still, Hannah has the company benefits on certain things like flight tickets, while Kara has to buy with full price.
“You’re a weird!” Khaled blurted before slurped his iced mocha. Kara glared and brushed off her thoughts away before begin her munching session.
“Don’t you wanna try the vegan diet? You can save more.” Kara rolled her eyes back and enjoyed her double kids’ meal once she can finally savoured within her taste buds after hearing them bickered to each other.

Hi! Could you please write a prompt with karamel's daugther asking how babies are made, and both Kara and Mon-El don't want to answer her, then, the girl goes to her aunties Alex and Maggie? Pleaaaaase! (I love your prompts fics! ♥)
Here ya go! I have a long line of prompts but I decided to do this one because it’s funny, lol.
Title: Where do Babies Come From?
“Mommy?”
Kara was in the middle of pouring herself her first cup ofcoffee of the day; in the kitchen of the small house that she and Mon-El hadmoved into after they got married a few years before, when her daughter’s smallvoice echoed through the room.
She turned around and saw the five year oldbrunette, who took after her father in both looks and personality, standing next tothe table and already dressed for school in her overalls and a pink t-shirt.
She smiled down at her precocious little girl warmly. “What’sup, little star?”
Kara took a sip of her beverage as Alura answered her. “Mommy,I heard some older kids talking on the playground yesterday and I was justwondering…where do babies come from and how comes they were talking about eggsand tadpoles? What do they have to do with anything?”
Thanks to her impeccable timing, Kara choked and spit out hercoffee in shock at the question that she really should have known was going tocome sooner or later but had just hoped would never be asked.
She’d naivelyhoped that her little angel would only find out about sex or be curious aboutit when she got to the age where they taught about it in class.  Realising that all her hopes were dashed, shetried to come up with an excuse to get out of it.
“You know that’s a really good question, sweetie”, she fakesmiled. “But maybe you should just wait until daddy gets home and we can talkabout it together alright?”
As if the universe was cursing her that particular day, thefront door opened and Mon-El’s voice came booming through the entire house. “Honey,I’m home!”
“In the kitchen, daddy!” Alura shrieked loudly and Karasighed, putting her coffee to one side seeing as it would not be a good idea totry drinking it in the case her little dove came out with any other shockingquestions.
Mon-El quickly appeared and without hesitating, scooped theirdaughter up into his arms and began planting sloppy kisses all over her face. “Daddy, stop! Daddy, that’s gross!”
Supergirl couldn’t help but smile with fondness as herhusband blew a raspberry on Alura’s cheek before planting her onto the groundgently.
“Sorry but you just looked so adorable that I wanted to eatyou all up”, Mon-El teased her with a wide smiled that made the dimples in hischeeks pop identically to his daughter.
“Daddy?”
Kara caught the inquisitive gleam in Alura’s eyes and knewimmediately what she was about to say. She bit back a laugh as she prepared towitness Mon-El’s reaction to his baby girl asking about sex.
“Yeah, sweetheart?”
“Where do babies come from?”
“….”
Kara snorted at the dumbstruck look on the Daxamite’s face. Heheard her and shot her an accusing glare.
“How come you and mommy are acting strange?”
“Well it’s just that we didn’t expect you to ask a questionlike that for many more years”, the blonde tried to explain.
“So where DO babies come from?”
Mon-El looked panic stricken at Kara whose cheeks were brightpink. “Err…it’s actually a secret!”
“A secret?” Alura asked her mother sceptically and folded herarms, unimpressed by the response.
“Yes!” Mon-El nodded vigorously in agreement.
“Why is it a secret?”
“Because it’s not something that anyone under the age of 25is supposed to find out any earlier or they might be tempted to create babiesbefore they’re ready”, Mon-El blurted out and Kara smirked. She was 25 when shelost her virginity to him and he knew that, clearly using it as a line fortheir own daughter though he probably hoped she’d never lose her innocenceespecially not to a charming alien from outer space.
“If you say so”, Alura frowned, clearly not believing herparents but before she could question them further, Kara quickly scurried herchild out of the house and into the car for school drop off.
Mon-El sat in the passenger’sseat with Alura in the back as Kara drove them in her SUV that had been one ofher biggest expenditures with her reporter salary but necessary since theycouldn’t exactly fly everywhere without drawing attention to themselves.
As soon as they got to her school, they walked her up to thedoor and gave her a hug individually.
“Remember sweetie, Auntie Alex is going to pick you up atthree and you’ll be staying with her and Aunt Maggie for a little while untilmommy finishes work, alright?”
“Yes mommy”.
Kara and Mon-El gave her a kiss before heading off to theirindividual jobs.
Three o clock came and Alex with her wife in tow, appeared topick up her niece, dressed in civilian clothing for a rare moment. As soon asAlura emerged from the building, her blue eyes lit up as they landed on herfavourite Aunts. She raced towards them and was immediately wrapped into atight hug. Alex and Maggie might not be eager to have any children of their ownbut they doted on their niece as though she was their own.  “Hey kid, did you have a good day at school?”
“Yeah! We did lots of maths which was way too easy for me butwe got to do arts and crafts later and that was really fun”, the child beamedas she walked with them to the car.
After making sure that Alura was strapped in, Alex got intothe driver’s seat and Maggie in the front passenger’s seat. “Auntie Alex?” thelittle girl suddenly said after a few minutes of rambling about her classmatesand what their parents were doing (apparently one person’s dad was kissing thepool boy), catching the women’s attention as they pulled up in traffic.
“What’s up kid?”
“Where do babies come from?”
“…”
Later that night found Kara, Mon-El and Alura sitting aroundthe kitchen table eating dinner. Kara was talking about a story that she wasworking on when their daughter interrupted.
“Mommy?”
“What’s up, Lurie?” Kara asked as she chewed on her food, notnoticing the familiar inquisitive gleam in the girl’s sparkling blue eyes.Mon-El froze with his folk suspended in mid-air as he unfortunately did noticethe look on her face and had a feeling that something uncomfortable was aboutto come from the girl’s lips.
“What’s a penis and how does it go in a vagina?”
They had to replace the kitchen table the following day afterMon-El accidentally broke in half with his strength.

so @theglowqueen and i literally went on for hours the other day continuing this post where i talked about gabe w/pokemon, so i’m going to try to do a graceful summary for each topic we covered and she can call me out if i forgot anything
the first text had to be in its entirety because it’s #perfect and what started everything but I’m just going to summarize the rest and quote sparingly. kara’s quotes, after the first one, are in italics and mine are in bold~
text that started it all, from kara:
“Yo you know your headcanon about Gabe’s Mimikyu? Like what if when everything goes to shit, he loses her. Like Ms. Beak knows to get out of dodge until things settle, but Sweetie wouldn’t let go. So then later on as Reaper, he senses a shadowy thing that originally [he was] wary of, but then he’s just like, “Sweetie?” and it is and she’s so excited that her boy recognized her even though she won’t let him see her. She knows the rumors that people die when they see a true Mimikkyu form, and she’s not taking that chance.
So he tears up his cloak. Sewed it into a costume like the Pikachu one she used to haev. Except now it’s black. And instead of doing a pikachu face he uses some white favri to sew the likeness of his own mask instead.
He gives it to her, and he has his Sweetie back. He feels bad that he doesn’t have anything [to] let her hold, but she’s okay with it.
Rumors begin about the tiny ‘Reaper’ that signals the arrival of a very real one.
I kind of want her to pick up one of his guns as her carry item, but at the same time all I can think of is ‘This is my Mimikkyu OC Mimigun. She’s a Mimikkyu, but with a gun.”
Sweetie, post-swiss HQ:
--Afterward, gabe is uber, uber protective of Sweetie and I argued that he’d flip on even widowmaker if they talked shit on his raggedy lil girl, and kara went on to say that “The reason people die after seeing the Raggedy Reaper is because they laugh at her and Reaper is just like Y’all dune fucked up my guys”, like they don’t take him seriously at first with this itty-bitty Raggedy Reaper following it around--until someone hears him call her Sweetie, and they say, “I thought ‘Raggedy Reaper’ was bad” and he doesn’t get much farther than that before they all start taking the mercenary seriously.
--Sweetie wants a gun so she can fit gabe’s new #aesthetic even more, but gabe’s like “no that’s okay” until she is sad she’s ruining his #aesthetic, so he goes to his gun supplier and is like “Hey, you know mimikkyu? Could you make one of my guns, but so she can’t hurt herself? I keep telling her no, but you know how they are.” Cue confused but willing supplier.
--heard on the field: “That pokemon has a gun!” “Relax, she’s not gonna hurt anyone with it.” noticeably absent: explanation that the gun is incapable of firing.... ever
Ms. Beak, post-swiss HQ:
--Ms. Beak is more of a reconnaissance agent than a fighter, because she’s a really common pokemon and therefore blends in real easily. we argued that she’d be trained to retreat whenever a situation went FUBAR, so that’s why she wasn’t in the explosion at all
--She was a giant, mournful pest in the aftermath until Gabe found her and she “disappeared” while overwatch fell apart.
--sadly, she’s also the reason they figure out gabe’s identity so quickly. cloaked man + custom Mimikkyu? not easy to identify. a giant pidgeot, combat-ish-trained and with familiar markings? much, much easier. Ana, in their first confrontation where Ms. Beak is there, is like, “waaaaait a minute”
--”Throws the whole mission on its head because she’s pulled out snacks for the enemy’s Pidgeot.
*deep voice from a distance*
‘Ms. Beak, no!’
‘I know it’s you Gabriel!’
‘shit’”
Post-discovering Gabe’s identity:
--in the past, gabe’s pokemon have always loved ana. she has the best snacks! ( “Ana has best pokebeans?? how turn down Gabe. How.”) and she’s so nice! good pets, good compliments--she even compliments Sweetie on her new outfit that gabe made for her, so that’s like. mucho bonus points. gabe’s a little annoyed that they go running to her right away, a little wary, but ana wouldn’t use them against him-- “she may have done some sketch stuff in her day, but she finds it wrong to use a pokemon’s trust like that”
--Jesse, too, was the weird kid that gabe liked, so they’re cool with him too. “Sweetie goes running up to him because she’s like, “Gotta show Jesse my gun. He likes guns” and Gabe is like yeah go for it. It’s a terrifying 5 minutes for Jesse before he recognizes Sweetie”. he shows her his own gun in response and she’s v v excited, and gabe’s relieved because that’s still his boy, underneath the gruffness and exhaustion
^^after that, jesse sort of ‘debriefs’ with ana like, “What was that?? is gabe back what’s going on” and she basically goes, “you’ve never seen that pidgeot or mimikyu in your life. understood?” so it’s like their lil secret
--Sweetie does /not/ like 76. at all. rumor has it that he thinks mimikkyu’s aren’t impressive and they’re just knock off pikachus and she doesn’t forget that sort of nonsense. would gouge out his eyes given the chance, and since those are normally covered, she tends to go for the throat when they have missions against him
Ana + reaper + his pokemon:
--She won’t use his pokemon against him, but she thinks that they’re a tool to use to get gabe back. part of her wants gabe, her best friend back, and that’s a good portion of her motivation. but the other, agent-side of her recognizes that overwatch would do more than survive if they could get commander reyes back.
--so that’s part of the reason she keeps extra poke-snacks in her kit, from then on, and she’s the one who starts using Ms. Beak to get messages to gabe--sends over his favorite type of tea, one time, and it’s a sentimental move that does move gabe
--”’If we’re good to Miss Beak, he’ll remember that when talon does something awful’ --Ana”  her hoping that they can sway gabe back to their side, but understanding it’s contingent on circumstances rather than any type of emotional moves. but stacking the emotional deck in their favor? not a bad idea, in her opinion
--it’s a very calculated approach
--these interactions are easier for ana, almost, because she has that calculating side, though it hurts when sweetie comes bounding across the field with a flask of her favorite kind of rum and she’s reminded of them as stupid kids--Ana, gabe, and jack, who thought they were the world.
-- (”She doesn’t miss commander reyes, she truly misses gabe,”)
Jesse + reaper + reaper’s pokemon:
--jesse sends sweetie over with a note and gabe’s blackwatch beanie after ana starts sending messages. it’s hard for gabe, because it makes him want to start caring about them again and he knows that can only end badly. at the same time, it makes his pokemon happy to see the two, soe he doesn’t want to stop them from visiting
--gabe sends ms. beak over to jesse’s in return and has her trash his liquor cabinet while depositing a (Really nasty, actually) note that basically says, “stop drinking you’ll get sloppy and lazy here’s a help hotline get help u fuckin loser” . and while it’s p nasty jesse’s like, “he still cares!!”
--which is really rough for jesse, because like. one minute they’re talking through his pokemon, and the next gabe’s completely ignoring him on the battlefield. not even looking his way, brushing him off, dismissing him.
--every response gabe gives him gives him hope, but every time he’s ignored crushes him all over again.
--(Gabe doesn’t want to fight him, is the problem. doesn’t want to hurt the man he loved as a son, and he definitely doesn’t want overwatch to know they’re in contact. in old overwatch, it’d be a death sentence to talk to the enemy without attempting to bring them in. he has no reason to believe that new overwatch is any different, is the thing. they’ll hurt him, he thinks, a little manically, and so he ignores jesse)
--(He thinks that new overwatch might even be worse, because they have so many enemies and won’t stand for any leaks. it’d be a firing squad. he has no idea that they don’t have any “warhawks” outside of ana and jack, that it’s a small organization that can’t afford to lose anyone, really--he just knows what old overwatch was like. so he deliberately acts obtuse and ignores and ignores, despite the hurt he can almost feel radiating off of jesse)
--jesse is not having a #GoodTime, basically
jesse + dealing w/hurt from reaper’s ignoring of him + bastion:
--”It gets bad enough that even though he and Ana decided to act like nothing was happening, Jesse wanted so bad to talk to someone about it. He knows that Ana obviously would be the best choice since she’s already in on it, but she’s so detached. He knows that they were good friends, but he also isn’t stupid enough to not see what she’s really doing.
He wants to tell Genji. They were all Blackwatch together, but Genji has moved on with his life. He’s found peace, and Jesse doesn’t want to fuck that up. He wants to tell Angela. He knows how close she and Gabe were. It was like she and Jesse were siblings for fuck sake. But she’s also Jack’s girl. Gabe was not her only support. And judging by the way Sweetie reacts to Jack, he’s not sure how she’d react to Angie.
Somehow, he ends up with Bastion. Bastion, who for some reason has Miss Beak sitting on her head.”
--jesse takes miss beak’s presence as a sign and info-dumps the fuck onto bastion, and bastion doesn’t really mind--she likes when they treat her like an equal/person, so while her communication methods are limited, she’s a good listener and she can be sympathetic and give him a pointy but nice hug when he gets upset. so jesse talks about gabe, about how it’s unfair because he’s always been gabe’s man, always been his right hand. and if gabe had gotten to him before the recall--well, he doesn’t know. bastion doesn’t fault him for admitting that
--bastion attempts to get across that jesse has much more support now with new-overwatch, that angela and genji love him, the younger agents think he’s great and look up to him, and winston in particular is so relieved that jesse is on their side with how skilled he is. unfortunately, her vocabulary isn’t the best with english even when she tries to type a message for him
--Ms. Beak croons and grooms his hair through it, and when jesse starts to feel better and thanks both of the ladies kindly for being ears for awhile, she leaves and pecks the shit out of gabe when she gets back. she’s pissed for daaaaaaaays, will leave him deliberately on the field to go groom jesse, and gabe gets the hint
--but. well. he doesn’t really change anything because what can he do?
jesse + reaper + snail mail snapchat:
--after this, gabe sends a letter to jesse asking about bastion and whether Ms Beak is safe with her or not. he gets a picture back of bastion covered in all kinds of bird pokemon. he also gets another one of jesse flipping him off, “but he doesn’t take it too harshly”
--it takes like 3 back and forths before gabe sends a selfie (Ms. Beak covers most of him, but it’s more skin than anyone’s seen since he ‘returned’) and jesse has an “oh” moment. because he didn’t just go off after swiss hq. He was actually really fucked up. he's a little forgiving of his initial hurt b/c part of him was assuming gabe was hiding and pretending to be dead like Ana was, for weird ambiguous justice-moral reasons Jesse still doesn't really get, but gabe didn’t. the pic soothes the old hurt of "gabe?? You're still alive??" “Because something that [rough] would need recovery and if deadpool has taught us anything, it's hard to face loved ones after being remade”
-- “Like seeing how Gabe was actually /fucked up/ really helps. Gabe didn't choose to leave him. His mom died, the gang left him, Genji left, and with the return of Reaper, he had been convinced that Gabe had left him too. But he gets it. He remembers having such a hard time facing everyone after he lost his arm. Gabe lost most everything. So it doesn't hurt as bad.”
-- “Exactly yes that. Gabe didn't leave willingly, so he's more in the category that his mom is in I'd imagine. So he's able to think of him fondly and still love him without that justified betrayed-feeling that he's still working out w/genji and the other overwatch members that just. Left when everything went downhill”
happier note: snail mail snapchat onto real snapchat! :
-- “Jesse sends him a picture of Angela and Genji. Gabe sends him back a picture every time he makes Sweetie a new outfit. Jesse manages to send him a picture of Widowmaker who had fallen asleep in her hiding spot, propped up against her rifle. Gabe sends back a picture of Miss Beak dive bombing Jack. Jesse sends him a picture of him flipping off his fucked up liquor cabinet. Gabe sends him back a picture of himself flipping him off”
--after ms. beak gets ticked and exhausted at being used like a post owl from harry potter, “Sweetie comes skipping over with the next message to Jesse's surprise and it's just a phone number. He saves it in his phone as Dad. They never message each other, but their Snapstreak is 50 days long. (Lena goes through his phone once and now thinks Jesse has a weird daddy thing going on but is too nervous to actually put it in his phone like that. So she changes it for him)”
jesse + his pokemon:
--jesse has 3 pokemon: a cubone named Kit, a growlithe named Cassidy, and an ampharos named Fluffy Spark.
--jesse found kit shortly before he joined the deadlock gang ( Kit’s backstory, up to this point, was basically >> Kit: *falls into a trainer's carry-on luggage* *sneaks off the plane* *wanders into a car because she smelled food* *ate a pizza man's delivery and was chased out* *ended up on a train, like a nice one with a food cart and was assumed to be one of the passenger's ones* *somehow ends up near jesse* ) on the side of the road trying to eat a rock. she’s his bb. she’s also an alolan one, which he doesn’t know, so when she evolves boy howdy is that a hot adventure i’ll go over below
--he gets cassidy when he joins the gang, and everyone wants him to evolve her right away (big, intimidating arcanine? much more useful for their needs than a smol pupper) but he keeps “losing” the fire stone they got him. he knows that cassidy isn’t ready and she doesn’t want to evolve yet, so he gets into some trouble and gets a reputation for being forgetful/for misplacing shit, but it’s all good. even at blackwatch, she doesn’t want to evolve, and gabe’s like “k whatever but i have extra fire stones if you need them” because he’s collected a lot over the years but never had to use any since none of his pokemon need them
--Fluffy Spark was originally just Fluffy, and cassidy basically herded him into jesse’s arms right after they went to blackwatch and they’ve had him ever since.  (Gabe’s like “the fuck kid” and jesse’s like, “cassidy won’t let me put him back!” then when fluffy evolved, jesse was sorta like “Well, you’re not fluffy anymore, so. spark!” but fluffy won’t respond, so he tries to be sneaky and call him fluffy spark and transition to just spark, but. didn’t happen.
cassidy + fluffy spark :
--basically your typical teasing-sibling relationship. will destroy each other but only they are allowed to do so, anyone else will be destroyed MORE
-- “People talk to Jesse like "Your Growlithe and Ampharos don't seem to like each other at all. Are you sure you should keep them together like that." Jesse looks over to see Fluffy Spark bopping Cassidy on the head and she nips at the ball on his tail. "Nah, they love each other!"”
--cassidy doesn’t want to evolve yet (”Cassidy is best pupper?? 1 out of 1 pupper agree. Best pupper is me. Don't listen to Fluffy Spark. He is full of lies.” ) and fluffy spark’s like “okay cool but you won’t be bigger than me until you do. so.” and thwacks her in the head and nibbles because he can and cassidy gets all riled up
-- “They're actually siblings. Cassidy steals Fluffy Spark's favorite pokebeans all the time and Fluffy Spark takes the treasured spot on Jesse's bed at night just so Cassidy can't “
--Ms Beak is the only one who really stops them when they get riled up together and are at each other’s throats. she likes to pretend she’s an old woman and make gabe carry her around, but jesse’s pokemon are to her what jesse is to gabe.
-- Sweetie is a little intimidated by Fluffy Spark, just because he has Much Personality and Sweetie is shy, but overall they get along and Sweetie can roughhouse a little rougher with Fluffy Spark than she can with anyone else. And Cassidy likes to give Sweetie piggy back rides because she's one of the only Pokémon on base smaller than her
Kit:
--so jesse has no idea that kit’s an alolan cubone. looks like a cubone, acts like a cubone, is a cubone! so when she starts to evolve, he’s like “oh cool” and then very quickly is like “WHY IS SHE ON FIRE”
--we didn’t have a concrete timeline for when she would evolve, but if it was during blackwatch-era it’d go like this: jesse bursting into gabe’s office/room/whatever with a weird-looking marowak yelling, “IS THIS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN”  while kit’s just cuddling into his chest and basically being like “you’re so weird, human, it nap time because evolving is hard work.” (if it was post-recall, it’d be the same but it’d be a snapchat video instead of in-person, and gabe would respond a few hours later with a picture of a map of alola, acting like he knew right off the bat [he didn’t, he had to look it up and do some digging b/c no one really goes to alola or knows much about it])
--gabe’s hella confused how jesse got an alolan cubone (”did you get her on the black market or something?” “no? i found her on the side of the road?? trying to eat a rock??” "why was she trying to eat a rock" "I don't know! She was a baby! I think. Regardless, she was hungry. Oh no. Do you think she'll want to eat fire things now? What do you eat now baby??" Kit, true to form, just nibbles on Jesse's pants pocket where she knows he keeps snacks, but he's a little too freaked out to get the obvious message. "She's eating my pants Gabe!" "Is there something in your pocket?" "Some Pokebeans but I don't know what that has to do with- oh.")
--in conclusion: Kit: happily nomming on pokebeans Jesse: still freaking out, would like to know what happened to his ground type Pokémon Gabe: long suffering, a tired dad
--Miss Beak thinks Kit's kinda weird and sometimes has to peck her hand so she doesn't eat things that aren't to be eaten, but at least she doesn't cause much trouble and lets Miss Beak sleep when she wants to.
--Sweetie and Kit are closer, because Sweetie never really acts like the age she is, like she's not that much younger than Miss Beak but she's more in the maturity range of Kit. They like to hold hands (or in Kit's case, hold one of Sweetie's tendrils that act as hands) and they chatter to each other, are much more "talkative" than the other Pokémon.
so yeah! the end. may do more with this some day because this is a lot of world-building to not continue imho, but we’ll see. huge thanks to the best roommate ever for spending nearly 10 hours hashing this out and being as enthusiastic as i am about a kinda out-there crossover <3 <3 <3 kara, u r my fave and i miss u already and you are the #best for starting this rollercoaster i took a week to actually write up and get on here

There was something decidedly… insistent about Lena’s footsteps. Kara knew it was her, of course, when she picked up Lena heading towards her apartment. Not just her heart rate but her breathing and mumbling to herself and the way she walked, her footfalls painting a picture of how she was walking, and she was mad.
Kara expected a complaint when she opened the door. Lena would sometimes launch without preamble into a rant about this investor or that senator or some such executive at this or that company and just rant adorably, balling her little fists. Kara would never tell her, because she’d feel patronized, but Lena genuinely was cute when she was angry.
Well, annoyed. When she was really angry, throwing a fit angry, fed up with the world angry, she was something else entirely. Kara would move heaven and earth, quite literally, to address whatever bothered her. When she was sad it was even worse and Kara just wanted to bundle her up in her invulnerable arms and shelter her from everything forever.
Lena walked into the apartment, not looking at Kara, and clearly fuming. She dropped the order she’d picked up on the way into the kitchen island and stared at it, then finally glared at Kara. There was no mistaking the subject of her anger.
Kara fidgeted nervously. She shifted on her feet, feeling a pressure of Lena’s gaze that forced her own away.
“Lena? Is something wrong?” She swallowed, hard. “Bad day?”
“Something is wrong,” Lena said, very softly, in the icy tone she reserved for the fools she did not suffer gladly. “Take off your glasses.”
“What?”
“Take off your glasses, Kara.”
“But I can’t see…”
Lena stepped forward and put her hand on the takeout order in its plastic bag. Kara had ordered it and Lena had agreed to pick it up, far from be first time they’d done that. Lena often ordered for them and Kara brought it when Lena was hosting.
Right now Lena was trembling, head tilted forward like she meant to charge, eyes locked on Kara.
“Glasses. Off.”
Kara hesitated briefly.
“Okay,” she muttered, screaming at herself not to do this, pleading for some kind of distraction.
All she wanted to do tonight was curl up with Lena on the couch and watch a movie and focus very very hard on not giving away how badly she wanted to make out with her.
Kara slowly took the earpieces in her hands and slipped them off, setting the too-heavy frames on the table with a soft clunk. The word rushed in, sounds more vibrant and distracting, colors almost unpleasantly sharp.
Lena was staring at her. Her nostrils flared and her fists clenched. She took her hand from the food bag and took another step forward, then another, finally picking up the glasses in her own hand, feeling them. She raised them as if to put them on and stared through them.
“For someone who says she’s blind without them, these glasses don’t have a very strong prescription, do they.”
Possibilities raced through Kara’s mind. Things she could say, things she might do. She’d squeaked out of this before, somehow evaded Lena’s staggering intellect. She had seen curiosity darken her brows, maybe even brief moments of suspicion.
This was different. Heavier. More serious.
“What gave me away?”
“Everything, really. All the pieces were there this whole time, but I just refused to put them together on my own. It took a flat out slap in the face to make me choose to see it.”
Kara’s chest felt like it was caving in. Everything was going wrong. Her chin quivered and the tears began welling hot behind her eyes.
Lena looked at her flatly. “The guy at the take out place asked me why I was picking up Supergirl’s order. I asked him what the hell he was talking about and he told me Supergirl comes on all the time. Then he showed me a selfie.”
Kara licked her lips.
“It has to be a mistake.”
“They have your number on their speed dial as Supergirl, Kara. You let their delivery kid take a selfie in your suit. They wouldn’t let me pay for it. The old lady that owns the place said ‘Supergirls girlfriend, no charge!’ and started laughing.”
Kara stared at her.
“Lena…”
“You better have a good fucking explanation for why your favorite restaurant knows who you really are and not your supposed best friend.”
The tension in their air was palpable, electric. Kara could feel it like the gathering energy in the air before a storm, ready to burst forth with energy and life or mindless destruction. She folded her arms around herself and looked down.
“You do know me,” Kara finally said. “You do know who I really am. You’re the only person who does.”
Lena’s extension was fixed, intense, edging between a scowl and a pout, and Kara realized with a start that she was holding back tears of her own.
“You’re the only person that knows me as me. You know me without Supergirl, but without all the fake stuff I do so people won’t realize I’m Supergirl. I don’t have to pretend to be clumsy with you. You’re not always looking at me like I’m super strong or super fast. I can just be me when I’m with you.”
“You’ve lied to me so many times,” Lena said, after drawing in a deep breath. “Running away from our lunches, telling me wild stories about where you disappear to at work, and I just bought every bit of it. You must think I’m an easy mark.”
“No, never.”
“I’ve always had it in the back of my head. I always thought there was something there, something between us that kept you from really, truly being yourself with me. The way your touches are always so whisper-light and you’re always stealing glances at me. Like you were afraid with every word or movement that you’d give something away.”
“Lena,” Kara began.
“I knew you were hiding something. I had hoped it was something else.”
Kara licked her lips. She quickened her perception, a little trick of will that took her out of sync with the humans around her, processing the world at her natural speed, which made her peers seem almost frozen in place by comparison.
She took this drawn out instant to really look at Lena, truly take her in, savor what she was seeing because it might be the end. She was suddenly heavily, painfully aware that this might be the last time she ever looked on Lena in person.
Great father Rao, she was so beautiful. Not hot or pretty or even gorgeous or sexy, beautiful. She was dressed for the autumn chill in a pea coat and turtleneck and black leggings and her hair was down, letting itself soften into her natural waves. She was without makeup, and Kara suddenly realized that she only ever saw Lena without makeup when she meant to be alone with Kara. When she was her most pure, most true self.
Kara slowed herself again and as she did the world sped up, and she drank in the soft sadness in Lena’s blue-green eyes and all of those things she’d pushed deep down came bubbling to the surface: imagined sighs and the feeling of that lustrous inky hair slipping through her fingers, her name whispered on pillowy lips.
Human thoughts. Alien thoughts. Desires no Kryptonian should even apprehend, much less indulge. The very idea of the non-procreative act was shameful, and to develop these emotional entanglement…
Kara had once mourned her failure, for she had been charged with preserving the ways of her people. Her first command had been to keep Kal Kryptonian.
A task she had failed even within herself.
“You hoped it was something else?”
Lena looked at her so sadly and so sweetly and swallowed.
“Yeah,” she said in a thick voice, “I kinda did.”
Kara smiled in spite of herself. When she sighed, it was as if the weight of a world slid off her shoulders.
“Can’t a girl have two secrets?”
Lena’s eyes widened.
“One day a long time ago, very very far away, a young Kara looked over her shoulder and watched the shockwave shatter the crust of her planet as its core exploded. She lost everything. Her world, her family, her culture, so many things. Tastes. Colors. Places. All gone.”
Lena wrapped her arms around herself, averting her gaze.
“I knew I’d lose you eventually. I just wanted to keep you as long as I could.”
Lena reached up and rubbed at her eyelids with her fingers.
“Do you remember when your mom’s goons threw you off the balcony?”
“Yes,” said Lena.
“Do you remember how I held you when I caught you?”
“I do.”
“I wish I hadn’t lied. I wish I’d never put you down.”
Lena said nothing and did not look up. Kara could hear her heart racing, practically feel the tension in her limbs across the room.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I lied. I’ve always known I could never keep you, I just didn’t want to make it end.”
Lena looked up with tear-wet eyes.
Then she lunged across the room, crossing the gap between them in long strides. Kara Danvers -Kara Zoe-El, Supergirl- was caught almost completely off guard. It wasn’t until Lena was practically charging into her arms, leaping into her, that she remembered to cushion the impact, catch her gently and make sure she didn’t slam herself into an unyielding wall of Kara.
She was so surprised, so shocked into helpless acceptance, that she didn’t offer the slightest residence when Lena reached, grabbed her neck in a firm hold, and pulled her into a kiss. Kara’s stomach did a backflip and she was helpless, undone despite all her strength. For a moment both their eyes opened and they looked at each other in a wordless exchange and Kara began kissing her back in earnest. Lena’s sharp breaths and soft moans instantly kindled a hot need inside her, thrumming like a plucked guitar string, and she effortlessly lifted Lena onto the kitchen counter.
“Holy shit, you’re strong,” Lena breathed.
“Of course I am,” she whispered into Lena’s kiss. “I’m Supergirl.”
And at long last, Kara found something she wanted to taste more than potstickers.

THIS HAD ME ON A GRIP. Full squealing and smiling like crazy. Overprotective Kara who will do anything for Lena is my shit.
