November 1981. Embiggenable family tree for the pre-Crisis Superman, from SUPERMAN: THE KRYPTON CHRONICLES #3. Here's a breakdown:
Superman's paternal grandparents were Jor-El I and Nimda An-Dor.
Jor-El I had a sister, Kalya Var-El, who married Nim-Zee, a member of the Kandorian Science Council, and a brother, Zim-El, who married Byma Ruth-Ar.
Nim-Zee and Kalya Var-El had two sons: Gem-Zee, whose daughter Thara Gem-Zee later married Ak-Var (Jimmy Olsen's successor as Flamebird), and Van-Zee, who later married the Earthwoman Sylvia DeWitt (and for a while succeeded Superman as Nightwing, hero of Kandor). Van-Zee and Sylvia have two kids, twins Lyle-Zee and Lili Van-Zee.
Zim-El and Byma Ruth-Ar's son Kru-El (Jor-El's cousin) was sent to the Phantom Zone for creating forbidden weapons.
Jor-El I and Nimda An-Dor had three sons: Jor-El II, his twin brother Nim-El, and their younger brother Zor-El.
Nim-El married Dondra Klu-Ta; their son Don-El later became the police chief of Kandor.
Jor-El II married Lara Lor-Van; their son, Kal-El, became Superman.
Kal-El's maternal grandparents (Lara's parents) were Lor-Van and Lara Rok-Var.
Zor-El married Alura In-Ze in Argo City after the destruction of Krypton. Their daughter, Kara Zor-El, born some years later, became Supergirl.

Russia just freed SIXTEEN political prisoners in a prisoner swap with the West!
Among the released political prisoners are:
Oleg Orlov, a longtime dissident and the co-chair of Memorial, an organization created in 1989 to chronicle the USSR's human rights abuses and educate Russians about the history of political repression;
Sasha Skochilenko, an LGBTQ artist who was imprisoned in April 2022 for replacing price tags at grocery stores with data about Russian destruction in Ukraine, deemed treasonous under Russia's "fake news" law;
Vladimir Kara-Murza, a political dissident who was fundamental in bringing about the Magnitsky Act to sanction Russian human rights abusers, and who was poisoned twice by the KGB in attempted assassinations before being sentenced to 25 years in prison for "treason";
Evan Gershkovich, a young American journalist who was arrested in Russia while reporting for the Wall Streeet Journal in March 2023 and sentenced to 16 years in prison for "espionage";
Paul Whelan, American former Marine who was arrested in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years of hard labor for "espionage";
Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty who was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for spreading "fake news" about the war in Ukraine;
Andrei Pivovarov, an opposition activist who headed the pro-democracy organization Open Russia before being imprisoned in a Siberian penal colony infamous for its torture of prisoners;
Ilya Yashin, a young opposition politician who was sentenced to 8.5 years in prison for publishing YouTube videos about the war in Ukraine; when Russian authorities "encouraged" him to leave the country, he chose instead to stay;
Lilia Chanysheva, opposition activist and regional coordinator of Navalny HQ; in her final speech before the Russian court, she tried in vain to appeal to the judge's sense of empathy: "If you put me in jail for 12 years, I will be too old to bear a child. Give me a chance to be a mother!";
Kevin Lik, a dual German-Russian citizen who was arrested as a minor for "photographing military sites" shortly before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine; he was the youngest person ever to be convicted of treason in Russia;
Rico Krieger, a German man sentenced to death in Belarus for supposedly planting explosives on a railroad track to help the Ukrainian army;
Dieter Voronin, a dual German-Russian citizen and political scientist who was arrested in 2021 in connection to a treason case involving Russian journalist Ivan Safronov;
Patrick Schobel, a German man arrested in February 2024 at the Pulkovo International Airport in St Petersburg when customs officers found cannabis gummies in his luggage, in a scenario very similar to that of Brittney Griner;
German Moyzhes, a dual German-Russian citizen and lawyer who was charged with treason for helping Russians obtain European residency permits;
Vadim Ostanin, opposition activist and Navalny associate arrested in 2021 for his work with Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation;
Ksenia Fadeyeva, dissident and Navalny associate sentenced to 9 years in prison.

crisis on infinite earths (1985) #4, 7

Hey there! Sorry if this has been asked before, but as someone who loves doing deep dives for picking names, I'd like to ask how you went about picking names for the characters? As you might have gathered from my last ask, I was scrolling through for MC names, and it occurred to me that you might have picked Jade for the sister for a "green with envy" kind of angle, and it got me curious on what your process was (if there was one, which is also fine).
It's never been asked as far as I can remember.
Cam - He was the first character I had created for the story and the first one I named. I've always liked the name, and for some reason when I thought of who he is as a character, the name just stuck out to me. G (Gage/Garnet) - This is the name they chose for themselves, there's history as to why which you'll learn in time. I wanted the name for M!G and F!G to have the same first letter. Garnet was easy, playing off gems. Gage was easy as well (I'm a fan of horror movies, Gage is a name of a character from Pet Semetary.) Kara - The letter change from Chris/Cam/Kara is intentional. Again you'll find out more in the story, especially on her route. I just liked the name. M(Markus/Melody) - Their initial name was different...I don't remember what it was now. Originally M was going to be named Marius (inspired by Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles) but I decided against it. Markus was just where my mind went after. M is a good singer so Melody was just a natural choice.
Isaac - I've no idea why I named them Isaac. I thought of their last name first. Then when brainstorming Isaac just fell into my lap and that was that. Ardent - I was struggling so hard to think of a name for him. I knew the character already, I knew that I wanted his name to start with an A. Then it was A. Pine. Idk why I chose a tree as his last name, I think I was having a bad allergy day and was pissed. And then I started thinking more literal Ardent = passionate. Fits him perfectly.

We need the entire El chronicles! (not in a pressurey way)
Lol! Okay, so here’s all I’ve got so far of DAWN OF SUPERMAN, to recap (full versions linked below):
SEASON ONE:
—Krpyton gets destroyed by both their collapsing sun and a massive civil war.
—Jor-El and his family try to escape Zod and his followers and head to the secret Kryptonian colony.
—Zod finds them and when Jor-El ejects his loved ones into space in escape pods, Zod opens fire, killing Zor-El and Alura, and knocking Lara, Cal, Kara, and Krypto of course. Jor-El evades capture.
—Lara and Cal land on Earth and Lara dies from an injury sustained in the blast. Cal is then left in the care of the humans John and Martha Kent.
—Clark has adoptive siblings, Micheal, Sean, Rueben, and Suzie.
—Cal’s desire to find his alien family leads him to become an investigative journalist and he moves to Metropolis in his early/mid twenties where he meets Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.
Now, the rest of the season I haven’t fleshed out as mush as I have Season 2, but that will be fixed in months to come. For the moment, here’s the basic outline: The premier two-parter follows the events stated above, along with lots of little anecdotes of Clark’s childhood. Then, once he arrives in Metropolis, things become a bit episodic. One episode, we’ll be watching Clark try to adjust to life in the big city and become Superman for the first time, then the next, we’ll be exploring Lois or Jimmy’s characters, fighting interesting villains like Livewire or Banshee, and building up Lois and Clark’s relationship. (Side note, Martha made Clark’s suit for him. When Clark was a kid, he asked her once to make him an outfit that looked just like the ones in his family holophoto, including his family crest on the front. Naturally, Clark had outgrown that old costume, but just before he moved out, Martha surprised him with a fair well gift: a new Kryptonian-style suit.)
HOWEVER… there’s another story growing beneath the surface. Ever since Clark became Superman, he’s had eyes on him. The whole world is watching this man become the most powerful, most undefeated superhero of all time, but that’s not precisely why the government’s interested in him. They’re interested because he’s wearing the same crest as the alien woman they found twenty+ years ago. Waller is immediately on the case, and she sends out a lackey to bring Superman in for questioning. (Haven’t decided who this character is yet.) When Clark realises that the men in black suits are coming after him, he immediately gets spooked and worries for his family. If they got hurt because he was being reckless and showing his powers publicly, he’d never forgive himself. So Superman’s gotta lay low for a while. Eventually, though, Waller figures out his secret identity, but Lois winds up being the one to save Clark for just a little bit longer, threatening to run this story in the papers if they don’t leave Clark—an innocent and upstanding citizen—alone. But as soon as the two of them have a moment, Lois immediately asks what’s going on and Clark reveals that he’s Superman.
By now, Waller is getting antsy, but there’s someone else who wants to join the party. Lex Luthor. He’s been funding the research on the Kryptonian pod, and LexCorp has been reaping the rewards of learning the secrets of their advanced technology for years. He crafts a machine/suit/(need to read the comics) that can go toe-to-toe with Superman and almost beats him. Doesn’t though. Lex will remember that.
By now, Clark is sick of running and hiding. Time to take the fight to them. With help from Lois and Jimmy, he tracks down the secret base where the pod and his mother’s remains are being kept, and the final battle commences. Waller loses, Lex loses his hair, they both swear revenge, and Clark takes back what’s rightfully his. He buries what’s left of his mother on the farm, and stores the pod in the shed temporarily. It’s a triumphant yet slightly melancholy ending for our heroes, especially as Clark and his brother get a chance to really talk some things through while he’s home visiting. Then Lois gets introduced to the family, and for a moment, everything’s right with the world.
Little does Clark know, though, that there’s a probe droid on Earth, watching him, and now it’s flying back out into space to report what it’s found to its boss. Zod.
SEASON TWO
—Zod shows up, tries to manipulate Clark, but they wind up fighting instead, and Clark beats his butt off the planet. He does manage to spook General Lane, though, and now he’s dead set against Krpytonians and what they could do to the planet if they so choose.
—Anyway, now Clark knows that his father is actually alive, and there’s also a secret colony of Kryptonians out there. He decides to look for them.
—The team (plus extra members) journeys into space where they meet all sorts of new aliens, including Green Lantern, and they also cross paths with Kryptonite.
—Then they find Kara and Krypto, who lead them to the colony.
—Along the way, they also manage to track down Jor-El, and he and Clark get to have a well-deserved reunion.
—They go to the colony together, but Zod follows them. There’s a big battle, Zod gets booted to the phantom zone, his ship is destroyed, and the colony is saved.
—PSYCH, just kidding. One of the extra members of Clark’s team is military, and he has secret orders from General Lane to kill any and all new Kryptonian forces he may encounter. So, using some Kryptonite he kept hidden, he makes a bomb and blows the colony sky high.
—Clark, Kara, and Krypto are the only Kryptonians to survive.
(Clark briefly wants to set Earth on fire…)
—Then Clark discovers that, on Jor-El’s ship, his father had made many recordings and created an A.I. Version of himself for company. This is now all Clark has left of him as they fly back to Earth.
—The ship later gets parked up the Arctic, becoming Superman’s Fortress of Solitude.
—Clark’s laid low with grief, but Lois and his family are there for him now more than ever. There’s still hope for the future.
THEN comes JUSTICE LEAGUE: HEROES RISING!
At the moment, I’m still working out which stories of Superman’s will be adapted into the show, but the main idea is that every season, there will be at least one or two BIG over arching plots that center around one of the main characters and an arch foe of theirs, like OG Teen Titans. But less episodic. Or, at least… not episodic like putting a tournament episode right in the middle of the Judas Contract arc, and more so like Avatar the Last Airbender episodic, where we’re having fun, but also learning more about the world and how various aspects of it work. The first major villain(s) will have something to do Zatanna and/or Green Lantern.
Speaking of the other heroes, here’s a quick little tidbit: So, Batman’s actually the one who brings the Justice League together. It falls into one of his contingency plan models. In case of emergency, CALL EVERYONE. During his first two seasons of BATMAN: GOTHAM FILES, he’s already come across The Flash—and Wonder Woman, over the course of the first two seasons of WONDER WOMAN: HEIR TO OLYMPUS, she’s become familiar with Atlantis and their royal family. And if you remember, Clark’s already met Green Lantern (Hal Jordon). Now all that’s left is Zatanna, hence I thought a Zatanna-centric Season 1 might be a good idea. Magic is a threat the rest of the Justice League can’t easily combat on their own. But I also had a thought, like what if I combined the Zatanna villain with the GL villain—SPACE WIZARDS!!! Idk, just thinking about it. Anyway…
I sadly haven’t had a chance to write Season 3, but what I do know (for just general stuff that’s supposed to happen eventually) is that Lois and Clark do get married and have a little boy named Jonathan. Then, some time later, Clark and Kara get called away into space on urgent business, and that’s when someone new appears: Con-El, aka Conner Kent, aka Superboy. He comes crashing down to Earth in an escape pod just like Clark’s, claiming to be a member of Superman’s family. After much convincing of the Justice League, they let him stick around until Clark gets back to truly vet him. In the meantime, he slowly gains the other heroes’ trust, becomes a member of the second generation of Teen Titans (The New Teen Titans) and helps save the world. HOWEVER… turns out he’s been working for Lex Luthor this whole time! Dun dun dun! I’ll save the rest of that story for later, heheheh…
Then, of course, when Jonathan grows up, he becomes the next Superboy and joins the third generation of Teen Titans, (Ultimate Teen Titans), and has some adventures of his own. Haven’t decided what his big arc will be yet.
Would love to do a mini-series following Kara when she was lost in space. T’would be cool.
And that’s currently all I have written, story-wise, for the Kents. Personally, I don’t really see many of the other SuperFam characters to be especially relevant to the story, or interesting, so I’m probably gonna either scrap them or repurpose them, unless there’s just, like, a MASSIVE fan outcry. It’s just that the whole point is that Clark and Kara are THE LAST KRYPTONIANS. The last of their kind, that’s part of their whole story—being alone. You can only get away with new Kryptonians falling out of the sky so many times before it gets old. And Conner was lying about his origins, so I can get away with that.
Here’s some fun stuff I wrote about Krypton and Kryptonians 👇
Here’s the Fall of Krypton and the El family’s escape 👇
Here’s the next part of Clark’s Origin Story 👇
Here’s a deep dive into Lois and Clark’s relationship 👇
And here’s Season 2 in-depth 👇

Okay, I thought about this and decided to answer at some length, so I hope you don't mind!
Highly Recommended
Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirohama – It’s a gorgeous series set in a pseudo-European fantasy land where witches are a part of life. There are a number of prominent disabled characters with different disabilities, including physical disabilities. The characters work together on solving what are essentially accessibility problems several times, and the series points out how factors like social class and job can impact how a disability affects a person’s daily life. The series' most prominent physically disabled character is a spoiler, but a few supporting characters use the setting's equivalent of a wheelchair.
The Oracle Code by Marieke Nijkamp (plus other Barbara Gordon stories) – After being paralyzed in an accident, teenage hacker Barbara Gordon is sent to a recovery center, but soon notices something off about the facility. Barbara Gordon is a long-running DC character whose disability originates from a cheap attempt to traumatize her police-chief father, but some later writers have actually committed to writing her as a disabled woman. Nijkamp is a disabled author and her story is a good introduction to the character. I recommend Gail Simone’s Birds of Prey run if you’re looking for more of her.
Perfect World by Rie Aruga – a manga about a woman, Tsugumi, who meets back up with her teenage crush Itsuki and finds out he had a spinal cord injury in the intervening years. The story follows their relationship from dating to eventually adopting a kid, all while focusing on how Tsugumi and Itsuki navigate the challenges of inter-abled relationships. As the POV character is abled, the emphasis is often on her perspective, but Itsuki gets the spotlight too, as do other disabled supporting characters.
Dungeon Meshi by Ryouko Kui – a manga about an autistic man cooking and eating dungeon monsters. I'm not joking, that's essentially the plot, even though the word "autism" is never said verbatim. As for physical disability, a major supporting character has an eye with injury-related ptosis and also struggles with ADLs like eating and sleeping for magic-related reasons. Overall, the manga deals heavily with themes related to disability and marginalization.
Flawed but Interesting
Gundam 00: The Manga by Kouzou Oumori (look up on ‘Does the Dog Die’ before reading!) In the near future, a group called Celestial Being shocks the world by declaring that they will use their futuristic weaponry to wipe out anyone who participates in war. The series follows the fallout and backlash of this declaration, particularly from the point of view of the youngest of Celestial Being’s pilots. This one is under “okay” because the manga isn’t the ideal way to get into the series, and also because the disabled characters do play into some harmful tropes. There’s a number of autistic-coded characters, several characters with PTSD whose symptoms come up in the story, multiple prosthetic users, a person who is blind in one eye, and a person with facial scarring. However, some of these characters ally with the antagonists for reasons related to their disabilities (i.e. seeking treatment, getting revenge for the incident that caused the disability), and there is a character whose writing strays towards the "evil alter" trope.
Trigun by Yasuhiro Nightow - (look up on ‘Does the Dog Die’ before reading!) On a remote desert planet, an outlaw called Vash the Stampede has a huge bounty and is wanted for a variety of crimes. Two insurance agents sent to track him down find that there’s more to him than they thought. This one is on the “okay” list because it features the trope of “futuristic prosthetics that move like flesh limbs” and also plays into the "evil alter" trope. But in general, if you liked Fullmetal Alchemist, you should probably give this a shot too.
My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi – In a world where everyone has superpowers, a boy without them aspires to be a hero, and is given a chance to do so by one of the greatest heroes in the world. This series has a very mixed track record with the specifics of how disability is depicted, but there’s no doubt that it does depict it. Many of the protagonists gain permanent injuries in their battles, ranging from chronic pain to missing organs and limbs. Both heroes and villains are shown to have mental health issues as well. There’s definitely issues, mostly related to poor research, and to the author leaning into the stigma around certain disabilities while crafting villains. All of that’s not even getting into the way that being “Quirkless” is coded as a disability, one that is essentially cured for the protagonist when he gains a superpower. But if you’re looking for some imperfect disability rep to play around with and imagine better, this is the place.
Kagerou Daze by Jin/Shizen no Teki-P – (look up on ‘Does the Dog Die’ before reading!) A depressed hikkikomori high schooler is forced outside during Obon, setting off a string of supernatural events that threaten several lives. Once again, this series suffers primarily from a lack of research. While it features a realistically mentally ill protagonist in Shintarou, his friends who respectively have narcolepsy and a heart condition are written less realistically. One character essentially wishes for a magic cure to his illness, although it backfires badly. Gets points for depicting a character as both a wheelchair user and capable of standing for at least a short period.
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle by CLAMP - (look up on ‘Does the Dog Die’ before reading!) a young man tries to save a princess's life, with multiverse-level consequences. Two main characters are blind in one eye, and a third gets a futuristic prosthetic that causes him chronic pain. That said, there's definitely some questionable depiction of mental illness, and several characters who are shown to be mentally ill are depicted as being violent as a result of that mental illness.
From Far Away by by Kyoko Hikawa - (no "does the dog die" entry, but in general expect graphic violence and a few instances of attempted assault) in a precursor to modern isekai, a teenager named Noriko finds herself transported into a fantasy world. Unfortunately, she has a starring role in a prophecy about the end of the world, several people are willing to kill her to prevent said prophecy, and she doesn't even speak the language. An old-school shojo fantasy romance with lots of damsel in distress moments for the protagonist. The love interest has a magical condition that makes him severely fatigued for short periods in exchange for being essentially superpowered the rest of the time. There's also a supporting character who falls into the "blind seer" trope.
Honorable Mentions
Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami – A high schooler attempting to help his friends finds himself up to his neck in the politics and power struggles of a hidden world of sorcerers. Much like MHA, people in JJK get hurt a lot, often in ways that are disabling. Additionally, certain characters have abilities called “Heavenly Restrictions,” that allow for enhanced combat prowess in one area at the sacrifice of another, often involving either physical ability or perception. However, for many disabled readers the treatment of the character Koichi Muta/Mechamaru will be extremely frustrating, enough so that it outweighs the series’ commitment to featuring protagonists with visible scarring.
Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya - (look up on ‘Does the Dog Die’ before reading!) An orphaned highschooler named Tohru finds herself homeless, and camps in the woods. The owners of the woods are two of her classmates and their guardian, and when they find out about her circumstances, they ask her to stay with them as a “housekeeper.” Only after all of this does she find out that they’re cursed to turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac if hugged by a member of the “opposite” gender. Obviously, this series has some dated gender politics and uses tropes that would go over less well today. That said, one of the primary characters has asthma and needs medical attention for it several times, while a supporting character is blind in one eye.! But the primary antagonist is also someone with a chronic illness, and they are depicted using it to manipulate the people around them. So tread with caution.
Does anyone know some comic/web comics or manga with physically disabled characters, especially main characters or strong supporting roles?
For example I really relate to Kakashi from Naruto due to my chronic fatigue, and I know FMA has many disabled characters and I plan on reading and/or watching it. I like fantasy but I'd also love some more realistic world ones, like Saiki k being a pretty good allegory for disability. (Even though that's technically still fantasy lol)
I'm really loving to hear any of these with disability, whether it can be read that way but isn't canon or invisible disabilities or whatever. I'd especially love to see mobility aid users, like Charlotte Webber from spiderverse comics (she uses forearm crutches! Like me! And a wheelchair when she's not fighting crime!) or various characters from FMA.
I don't really read webcomics usually so I don't know any of thos examples but I'd love to hear some of those too.
I'd also be interested in fanfics that take non disabled characters in canon and write them as disabled.
Anyway yeah please I want to read disability representation and I prefer to get my media visually or from world building I already know
#manga#comics#ninth's post#disability#comic recs#manga recs#disclaimer: these are all just my opinions#obviously the list is skewed by both what kinds of stories i seek out and what kinds of disability rep i'm attracted to#and the fact that I was a teen in the late 2010s so some of my faves are a bit older#wha#witch hat atelier#dc comics#barbara gordon#perfect world (rie aruga)#dungeon meshi#gundam 00#kagepro#kagerou project#trigun#trc#tsubasa reservoir chronicle#from far away#kanata kara#jjk#jujutsu kaisen#furuba#fruits basket#queue
