It’s my bestie’s birthday! While I miss Cooper almost every day, Skye has easily become the living creature I rely on the most. A rare out-of-cosplay, no make-up, greasy hair selfie, because bedtime snuggles with this dog. . . . Yesterday marked three months since Cooper's death and sometimes I wonder which of us two miss him more. He was there, at Skye's side, her entire life. There have been some tough times with the dogs lately - intense aggression between Skye and Heaven, and all the theories are because of the power struggle with Cooper being gone and Khal joining the family. It's hard. On all of us family members, furry or not. All I can do is keep showering them with love and do my best to make the house safe and secure and, well, home. Days like today are never, ever easy. We said goodbye to Angel, after twelve amazing years. She kept big brother Jason company while he was off at school, she kept us company at home when Jason was away, and she always tolerated our love and attention with perfectly poised aloofness. Kingston, Richmond Hill, Toronto, the cottage ... she was a well-travelled pup, and always seemed to enjoy the adventures. RIP, Angel. Today marks a year since Cooper’s ... you know. Sometimes it still doesn’t feel real - that I’ll come home and he’ll just be in the mud room, waiting. But I miss him every day, and I think I will for a very long time. No matter how many other puppy kisses I get, no matter how many more I snuggle, none will be like my pillow. He’s with me every time I dive into the water, every time I eat an apple, every time Skye sits on top of me. And I see so much of him in Khal, it’s almost scary - since they never met, and Khal was over 4 years old when he joined our family eight months ago - and sometimes it hurts more than it helps. . . . But anyway. Here’s a small sampling of pictures of me and my best boy, almost entirely from the cottage, most of which have never been seen by the Internet. Tonight's championship game signifies the end of my summer baseball league. (We didn't win tonight - but it's okay! We made it to the championship game and that's enough for us!) For most of the games, #skylar came with me. Every time I came downstairs with my baseball hat on, she knew, and would wait by the front door for me. Or just follow me around the house. . . She was the best baseball dog. Happy to hang out on the bleachers, play with the other team-mascot-dog (Jersey the golden retriever!), and, of course, bark at every other dog that walked past.
